"IT WOULD TAKE a braver man than I to try to forecast the future of mining exploration far into Canada's second century. Even to look ahead ten or twenty-five years we must review the figures of the fairly recent past -and I have found this quite a time-consuming but interesting job -in order to find trends and project them into future years. The trends to which I will refer are: firstly, the annual expenditure on exploration and its relation to value of output; secondly, the discovery rate and its relation to production initiations; and thirdly, the methods by which discoveries have been, and will be, made. Exploration Expenditures Figures on the annual expenditure on mining exploration in Canada have been collected and published for some years by the Do-minion Bureau of Statistics. These have some unavoidable limitations; e.g., in the varying definition between one company and another of what comprises ""Exploration"" and in the difficulty of getting complete returns. However, although the actual figure for a given year may be subject to question, I believe that the relative figures from one year to another are reasonably reliable. There is also a lapse of time between the collection of data and publication -the last published figures are for the year 1963. In bringing the figures up to date to 1966 I have canvassed eight of the larger mining and exploration companies and obtained their figures for 1963 to 1966 inclusive, and then averaged these for each year and applied the progression to the 1963 figures."

Computer visualization can be employed in industry as an aid to the understanding of the complex interactions between variables encountered in production. The examples of ingot casting of rimming steel and that of hot rolling of low carbon steel strip are presented. Both processes are mathematically modeled, and their results are presented in a graphical way. Such models have been proven to be an asset in quality improvements and increase of productivity as the personnel involved get a better understanding of their job.

All technical facilities of the Bureau of Mines have been geared for more efficient use and conservation of mining equipment, developing plans for safety, improving the quality of coal through better methods of preparation, studying the problems of coal storage and utilization, and extending the uses of coal5/ for the war and postwar economy. The Bureau is now analyzing all of the coal purchased by the Army and much of that required by the Navy. Work on boiler feed water was doubled over last year to meet the increased demand made by the War Department for protecting vital boiler plants in many new camps and defense plants. Progress has been made in safely storing coal to reduce dangers of spontaneous ignition to a minimum and to preserve coking power. Mixtures of oil and coal to be used as a substitute fuel have been investigated. Mr. President and Members of the Rocky Mountain Coal Mining Institute: It is a great pleasure to be with you at this meeting, to enjoy the entertainments, and the good fellowship of all present., as well as to become better acquainted with the men in general. In presenting my subject today, .1 feel like the darky, who was home-, ward bound, had become weary and sat down by the wayside to rest. Presently glancing about to view the scenery, he spied a. large brown bear slowly coming down the path scenting his tracks one by 'one as he advanced. The darky to be polite said, "Mr. Bear, I see you like my tracks, I will make you some more." I have on. a few occasions given some interesting information on the various subjects such as The Prolonged Famines of Arabia, Movements and Migrations of the Races of Men, Life Indications on the Planet Mars, and today I have come before you with a new step in the roadway-Coal Geology. It is sometimes difficult to interpret the geological processes so as to be understood intelligently, but it shall be my aim to make this as plain as possible.

There is an increasingly unpredictable labour pool which can be aging, or have skill shortages, or non-aligned skills. As globalisation continues, companies also require efficiencies during operation across various locations. AMEC has met these challenges in the global oil and gas sector by developing our Capability Development and Competence Assurance (CDCA) program. CDCA is applicable across all process industries, including mining. CDCA supports simultaneous consistency and flexibility by defining competence at task level, with corresponding best practice blended training programs, and evaluation criteria and processes. CDCA then defines role profiles mapped to local task definition. When combined with web-based technology, this granularity allows us to manage high volume workforces, while retaining individual learning plans and progression, aiding job satisfaction, and employee retention.

Crucial information about safety, design and operation from ground movement data can be utilized in underground mines. Communicating the information and exploring new findings can be a challenge, however, in a decade where there is an ever-increasing volume and velocity of data due to advancements in mining technologies. This challenge escalates for geotechnical data as they are multidimensional, depending on the space and the rate at which they take place. To tackle this challenge, geotechnical engineers should focus on using simple yet compelling visualization of rock mass data in 3D. Competent visualizations of ground conditions as a trigger action and response plan (TARP) could ease the communication of safety concerns and the exploration of rock mass displacement and strain surrounding an opening at an underground mine. Therefore, this study focuses on using scientific visualization methods by rendering geotechnical data over the surface of a 3D mesh model to display TARP levels. The study was conducted at the East Decline of the San Xavier (SX) Underground Mine, a laboratory mine operated by the University of Arizona. The project aims to produce visualizations that optimize the use of geotechnical data in near-real time.

This can only be achieved by utilizing three of Cassiar's most important resources; i.e., people, time and money. Past environmental programs have more than proved that the goal can be reached and. with the future programs now in progress. Cassiar Asbestos will achieve its environmental goals.

THE most outstanding property of ammonia liquors, used in the ammonia leaching process is their very limited ability to dissolve all compounds present in reduced ore except nickel and cobalt. Although they do have such a high degree of purity, even the smallest amounts of impurities contaminate the precipitate of basic nickel carbonate that may be obtained from pregnant liquors by straight distillation. Figures have been given in a separate paper regarding the extent of such contamination. The product of straight distillation is likely to contain small amounts of Fe, Mn, MgO and SiO2 as well as some sulphate and sulphide. The sulphur can be readily eliminated by calcination of the product at the proper temperature and MgO and SiO2 by reduction and melting of the metal with a suitable flux. After such treatment the metal is relatively pure, and the iron and manganese content will be very small. The cobalt content, however, may vary considerably, depending upon the ore treated. The metal obtained from pure true garni-erite ores usually has only a small cobalt content of less than 1 pct. Metal obtained from medium grade iron-rich nickel ores may show cobalt values from 2 to 3 pct, and the alloy obtained from laterite is likely to contain as much as 10 pct cobalt. By proper treatment a good deal of cobalt may be recovered from lateritic nickeliferous iron ores, and cobalt will become the major constituent of the pregnant liquor if asbolan ores or similar products are treated. The pregnant liquor of "run of mine" nickel ores may have a pinkish shade, indicating the presence of cobalt. It is evident that from such liquors the metals should be recovered separately. Even if cobalt is present in only very small amounts, it would probably be economically justifiable to recover both metals as pure as possible if a suitable process could be devised. The author has made investigations along this line and has patented some processes adapted to the treatment of this type of solutions. Selective Dissolution of Nickel from Basic Nickel Carbonate Containing Some Cobalt: Basic nickel carbonate obtained from true garnierite ores by straight distillation of the pregnant liquors, always contains some cobalt as well as the normal impurities. In. order to improve the quality of the nickel product and to recover most of the cobalt, the following process has been devised. By using liquors with a low CO2 to NH3 ratio, nickel can be redis-solved preferentially to cobalt. It is not a sharp and clean separation but a selective one, for the bulk of the nickel may be redissolved with a small amount of cobalt, and a small residue may hold the bulk of the cobalt. The greatly increased cobalt content of the residue is indicated by a pronounced olive green color, in contrast with the light green color of pure basic nickel carbonate. The following example is given from Dutch patent No. 52788, Klasse 40a. 43 granted June 17, 1942: The original precipitate contained about 0.55 pct cobalt calculated on total nickel + cobalt. Eight hundred and fifty grams of the basic nickel carbonate were redissolved in leach liquor containing 7.12 pct NH3 and 2.12 pct CO2. The weight of the dry residue was about 3.5 pct of the original weight. By analysis it was found that the residue contained: Fe 1.93 pct, Co 6.01 pct, Ni 34.87 pct and also a certain amount of silica. The clear filtered blue liquor was distilled and the precipitate of basic nickel carbonate from this analyzed: Fe 0.008 pct, Co 0.0146 pct, Ni 42.37 pct. Henry LOUIS, London, England (communication to the Secretary) : Prof. Richards's paper has impressed me as highly valuable. Without entering upon any discussion of it as careful and thorough as it deserves, I venture to mention one or two points which a perusal of it has recalled to my mind in connection with my own study and practice of ore-dressing. I always mentally divide jigging into two phases: 1. A particle at rest on the jig-bed is lifted and carried upwards by the rising current of water, at an increasing velocity, which tends to a maximum. When the upward current is stopped, the particle continues to rise with rapidly diminishing velocity until it comes to rest. This completes the first phase. 2. In the second phase, the particle falls from its position of rest with an increasing velocity which tends again to a maximum, and continues to fall until the rising current of water has reduced its velocity to zero. This completes the second phase. The second phase will evidently be greatly modified by the effect of suction, as Prof. Richards shows; but I do not see that his experiments very clearly imitate the action of the second phase. And the brief intervals at the end of each phase, when the mineral particle, by reason of its acquired velocity, is still moving, though in opposition to the water-current, yet remain to be investigated. I feel especially, in Prof. Richards's paper, a difficulty which I have felt with regard to all similar previous investigations, namely, that the experiments deal with particles falling a long distance, when the velocity becomes uniform. I question whether this uniform maximum velocity is attained in actual jigging-practice. If so, it is certainly for a comparatively very small proportion only of each stroke. It seems to me that an investigation like that of Prof. Richards, but confined to the first 6 or 8 inches of fall only, and carried out with suitably delicate recording-apparatus, is what we

(Cleveland Meeting, October, 1912.) THE structure of iron and steel, though the object of so much study and research for the past 25 years, is by no means thoroughly understood. In the first place, we have three or more distinct iron-carbon thermal diagrams, each with its own supporters, and each representing a theory of the structure and constitution of cast-iron. In the second place, by reason of the fact that austenite, the solid solution of carbon in iron, decomposes in the solid state into ferrite, or pure iron, and cementite (Fe3C), and that quenching from above this transition-range, no matter how rapid, cannot entirely prevent the change and thus preserve the austenite by itself at ordinary temperatures, it happens that under the microscope we find, in addition to the ferrite, Fe3C, and austenite, which the thermal diagram of steel requires, it series of transition-products with distinctive structures, to which have ,been given the names martensite, troostite, sorbite, etc. Now these transition-products, in addition to the solid solution, austenite, have been the source of much controversy, at times very bitter. One side would insist that, say, troostite was an entity, which the other side would deny, pointing out that it must be a transition-mixture, with a particular structure. That austenite was a solid solution of carbon in iron has been denied by one school ; we have been told that Fe24C dissolved both Fe3C and Fe, and thus gave rise to a whole series of quenching-products-all this in spite of the fact that no matter how the thermal diagrams differ in regard to cast-iron, they all agree in regard to the solid solution, austenite, for Fe24C finds no place on the diagram. Part 5, the last of this series, deals with the theoretical confirmation and application of results developed in parts 1 and 2. The bulk-sampling variances of Hassialis and Kassel and Guy are compared with those in part 2, both as to formulation and as applied to ores and coal. The results provide confirmation for much of the development in part 2. Examples are presented for determining the reliability of bulk samples with respect to various measurable characteristics. These characteristics include, for example, assays for elements or compounds and particle surface area. The bulk samples considered consist either of a given weight, a given volume, or a given number of particles. In addition to problems of sample reliability, some of these examples may also be applicable to quality control. Several possible applications of results developed in parts 1 and 2 are outlined. These include tests for random data, degree-of-mixing indices, and particle-fineness indices.

Passive methods of treating mine water use chemical and biological processes that decrease metal concentrations and neutralize acidity. Compared with conventional chemical treatment, passive methods generally require more land area, but use less costly reagents and require less operational attention and maintenance. Currently, three types of passive technologies exist: aerobic wetlands, organic substrate wetlands, and anoxic limestone drains. Aerobic wetlands promote mixed oxidation and hydrolysis reactions, and are most effective when the raw mine water is net alkaline. Organic substrate wetlands promote anaerobic bacterial activity that results in the precipitation of metal sulfides and the generation of bicarbonate alkalinity. Anoxic limestone drains generate bicarbonate alkalinity and can be useful for the pretreatment of mine water before it flows into a wetland. Rates of metal and acidity removal for passive systems have been developed empirically by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. Aerobic wetlands remove Fe and Mn from alkaline water at rates of 10-20 and 0.5- 1.0 g. m-2? d-1, respectively. Wetlands with a composted organic substrate remove acidity from mine water at rates of 3-9 g. m-2? d-1?. A model for the design and sizing of passive treatment systems is presented in this report.

The Chibougamau area is the eastern segment of the MatagamiChibougamau greenstone belt. The Archean rocks of the area consist of two mafic-to-felsic volcanic cycles ( Roy Group) overlain by a sedimentary-volcanic sequence (Opemisca Group). The Roy Group volcanics are intruded by many coeval and comagmatic differentiated gab bro sills. The Supracrustal rocks of the Roy Group and Opemisca Group have been folded about north-south axes, refolded isoclinally about east-trending axes and metamorphosed to the greenschist facies. The same lithologies have been identified east of the Grenville Front at amphibolite grade. The first volcanic cycle consists of 3000 metres of porphyritic pillowed basalts and comagmatic gabbro sills (0batogamau Formation) overlain by a thin sequence of felsic pyroclastics, porphyritic dacites, and iron formation (Waconichi Formation). The Dore Lake Complex is a sill-like layered complex intruded in the upper part of the Waconichi Formation. The second cycle consists of 3600 metres of pillowed basalts and gabbro sills (Gilman Formation) overlain by a volcanosedimentary assemblage less than 1000 metres thick (Blondeau Formation). The Cummings Complex consists of the Roberge sill (dunite and peridotite) at the base, the Ventures sill (gabbro) and the Bourbeau sill (leucogabbro and quartz ferrodiorite) at the top. It is emplaced within the Blondeau Formation. The Opemisca Group sediments and minor porphyritic K-rich andesites (Stella, Hauy, and Chebistuan Formations) form narrow belts preserved in the synclines of the area. The Proterozoic rocks of the Chibougamau area consist of conglomerates, arkoses, and argillites with dropstones of the Chibougamau Formation. North of Chibougamau, the Mistassini Basin forms an elongate northeast-trending basin filled with sediments of the Mistassini Group. Conglomerates, sandstones, argillites, dolomites, stromatolitic dolomites, and iron formation are the principal sediments within the basin.

Of all the elements, sulphur occupies a place by itself. It is mined in situ, in such quantities and of such purity that, as regards the tonnage produced, it is the first of any element on the list. Iron and coal the great tonnage producers, are combinations of elements, while sulphur is mined and marketed almost chemically pure. It is sold, in large quantities, commercially, calling for a purity of 99.5 per cent while for medicinal purposes, the Pharmacopoeia requires only 99 per cent. purity. It is a very common commodity, and like many common things is of extreme importance, in the progress of our civilization. The substance has been known from the earliest times, the word sulphur being derived from the Sanskrit Culvari", hence the Latin Sulphur. Commercially it is also called brimstone, this word being a derivative of the Anglo-Saxon Bryne Stane or burning stone. From our younger days, we have been more or less familiar with the mineral. On the spiritual side being threatened, if we did not behave ourselves, with an ultimate consumption in a lake of fire and brimstone, (which in moments of reflexion was not pleasant to contemplate) while our bodily ills were taken care of by inward applications as a spring medicine. In both instances, the effect required, was generally attained. Sulphur occurs in nature, both free and in the combined state, it being estimated that it forms, over one tenth of one per cent of the first ten miles of the earths surface. With the aid of the splat-cooling technique of rapid quenching, metastable alloy phases based on antimony ad bismuth have been prepared. At room temperature, simple cubic phases were found in the Sb + Au, 56 + Yd, and Sb + Ni systems. Another phase was retained in the Au-Bi system at -190°C; in this systent, a microcrystalline phase and a rhombohedrally distorted phase were also observed. The crystal chemistry of these phases is discussed in terms of their valence electron concentration range. A remarkable five-step Phase sequence was found upon heating and equilibration of certain metastable Au-Bi alloys. USING the splat- cooling technique of rapid quenching from the liquid,' a large number of metastable intermediate alloy phases have been prepared in recent years. Thus, Hume-Rothery phases of the hexagonal type based on the valence electron concentration have been produced in systems where they are missing in equilibrium, e.g., Ag-Ge 1 or AU-Sb. 3 In a comprehensive study of metastable alloys based on tin, simple hexagonal metastable y phases were found, raising the total of stable and metastable y phases from 3 to 13. 4 In the In-Bi system, five new metastable intermediate phases were retained.' In most cases, the new metastable phases have some crystal chemical characteristics in common: a) They have rather simple, elementlike structures with few atoms per unit cell, e.g., y phase,4'5 or the metastable primitive cubic phases in the Ag-Te and and Au-Te systems.= b) Their structures are often related to those of the terminal phases, or to elements that are straddled in their position in the periodic table by the constituent elements; this is the case for metastable ß (In-Bi) with the structure of white ß Sn,' or metastable a (Cd-sn). 4 c) They seem to represent the crystal structures appropriate to certain average group number (AGN) ranges in which no or few single-phase structures exist in equilibrium. These average group number ranges can probably be equated in the case of many elements of the Ba(Zn)-Bs(As) groups with the averaged valence electron concentration. In the present work, the splat-cooling technique has been applied to the alloys of antimony and bismuth. In equilibrium, neither element forms intermediate alloy phases with other B elements from groups Bl(Cu) to B4(Si) that contain more than 66.7 at. pct of Sb or Bi, respectively, e.g., AUSb 2. 7 Thus, antimony- or bismuth-rich phases, which might be closely related to antimony or bismuth, and which would reflect struc- tural changes occurring on alloying with small amounts of addition elements, do not exist. Also, the terminal solubility of antimony and bismuth for all B metals is very small. It was therefore of interest to investigate the influence of enforced, nonequilibrium solid solution of addition elements in antimony and bismuth on their crystal structures. It was found that additions of group B 2-B4 metals act distinctly differently than additions of group T 10 and B1 metals. The latter set of additives will be treated here. EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUES Alloy preparation and splat-quenching followed closely the procedures described in Refs. 1, 4, and 5; they consisted of the preparation of master alloys from high-purity starting materials (99.99+ pct) and blast-atomizing of 20-mg quantities onto copper sheets. The resulting approximately 1 to 5 u thick foils were investigated by X-ray diffraction. The cooling rates obtained are of the order of 107 to 10 8 C per set,'" causing solidification to proceed at a rat; of approximately 100 cm per sec.' Powder patterns of the resulting fine-crystalline materials were taken with filtered CuK, radiation. "Abstract-Detailed petrographical and geochemical studies have been carried out on the igneous and sedimentary rocks in the Omai area, part of the Paleoproterozoic Barama-Mazaruni greenstone belt, Guyana. The stratigraphic succession at Omai begins with basalts, associated with mafic-ultramafic intrusives and poorly-sorted conglomerates; these are overlain by andesites and quartzfeldspar porphyries, with pelites and tuffaceous sediments at the top. The volcanic-sedimentary succession was intruded by a quartz-monzodioritic stock (Omai stock) and granophyric rhyolite dikes. Several generations of mafic dikes were intruded discontinuously from the Mesoproterozoic to the Permo-Triassic. Volcanic rocks range in composition from subalkaline basalt to high-silica rhyolites, with a gap between 60% to 70% SiO2, which suggests the suite is bimodal. Major, trace, and rare earth element criteria were used to subdivide the rocks into tholeiitic and calc-alkaline types. The tholeiitic rocks are characterized by flat to moderately sloping chondrite-normalized REE patterns. On the basis of immobile trace-element ratios, the tholeiitic mafic rocks from Omai have characteristics of immature intra-oceanic island arcs, or of E-MORB basalts affected by a strong arc signature, as is commonly reported for back-arc basin basalts. The andesites, quartz-feldspar porphyries, rhyolites and quartz monzodioritic stock are calc-alkaline, with strongly sloping REE patterns, enrichments in the large-ion lithophile elements, and depletions in the heavy REE and high-field-strength elements, features which are typical of more mature island-arc settings.At Omai, two types of gold-bearing veins can be distinguished: vein sets (± stockworks) and tension veins, both post-dating the regional metamorphic peak at the level they were emplaced. The relationship between the gold mineralization and its host lithologies does not seem to be genetic. Rather, the emplacement of mineralization was strongly influenced by the rheological contrasts between the intrusive/subvolcanic bodies and the volcanic/sedimentary country rocks. These contrasts helped to focus the regional stress upon the more competent intrusive subvolcanic bodies, resulting in brittle fracturing, and therefore in greatly enhanced permeability to hydrothermal fluids. The Omai gold mineralization can be classified as late tectonic, with its emplacement controlled by the last brittle to brittle-ductile stages of the Trans-Amazonian orogeny."

These classes of investigation commonly merge so that no sharp boundary can be traced between them. The National Research Council therefore defines industrial research as "the endeavor to learn how to apply scientific facts to the service of mankind."' Currently, expenditures for research by industry are variously estimated at between $450,000,000 to $700,000,000 a year,' or about twice the expenditure for 1940. The President's Scientific Research Board" estimated that the national research and development for 1947 (excluding atomic energy) was as follows: A few companies spend as much as 5 pct of their gross receipts for research, but 1% to 2 pct is considered a good proportion by many." Shortages: Commendable as is the record of growth and accomplishment of science in industry, it is only a beginning. America and the rest of the world have merely sampled the fruits of industrial research; most industries have yet to make research the key to their future. A top research consultant, T. A. Boyd, of General Motors, states ". . . perhaps 90 per cent of all companies still have no research laboratories."Y or example, of more than 17,000 manufacturing concerns whose gross sales exceed $500,000 a year, less than 2500 have research laboratories. A still smaller proportion of the 184,230 manufacturing establishments in 161 industriese have or could afford their own research facilities. Yet, the small and mediurn-sized com,panies with less than 250 employees each, produce one half of the dollar volume of manufactured products.' How are these companies to participate in and share the benefits of research?
