In 1997, 92.3% or 235.7 Mt (259.8 million st) of coal produced in Wyoming came from the Wyodak coal zone in the eastern Powder River coalfield. The mined portions of the zone consist of one to three beds of coal with an aggregate thickness between 15 and 33.5 m (50 and 110 ft). The thickest expression is 61 m (200 ft). The delivered coal from this zone averages 0.33% sulfur, 5.12% ash and 19.98 MJ/kg (8,590 Btu/lb.). This coal zone occurs at or near the top of the Paleocene Fort Union Formation, which is overlain by the Eocene Wasatch Formation. There is also production from two coalbeds in the lower portion of the Wasatch at the southern end of the basin. Production of coalbed methane derived from the Wyodak coal zone is currently an estimated 289 Mm3/a (10.2 billion cu ft/year). This production is occurring west and downdip from the coal mines and is increasing each year.

The activity of SiO2, in the entire liquid system SiO2-CaO-Mg0-A12O3 at 1600°C is calculated from the distribution of silicon between these slags and Fe-Si-C alloys saturated with either graphite or silicon carbide, the activity coefficient of silicon in these alloys, and the requisite thermodynamic data. The activities of the other components in the ternary systems SiO2-CaO-A12O3, SiO2-MgO-CaO, SiO2-MgO -A12O3 are computed from these data by the IrON blast-furnace slags can be regarded as consisting of the four major oxide components, SO2, CaO, MgO, and A12O3 along with minor proportions of other oxides and of sulfur. The purpose of this study is to measure the activity of silica in the liquid solutions of these four oxides at iron-making Gibbs-Duhem equation with the aid of the known free energies of several of the interoxide compounds and the accepted phase diagrams. Based on these activities, new data are Presented for the free energy of formation of a number of the interoxide compounds. The free energy of mixing the liquid metasilicates of CaO and MgO shows slight positive deviations from the ideal. temperatures and to obtain activities of the other components by application of the Gibbs-Duhem equation and the properties of several interoxide compounds. Recent investigations on the activity of silica in the SiO2-CaO-A12O3 system1-3 and recogntion of a serious error in older data for the free energy of formation of SiO2 (Ref. 4) have succeeded in bringing a fair degree of concordance into the results of different investigators. This U.S. Bureau of Mines report reviews published information on synthetic berlinite (AlP04) and suggests experimental conditions requisite for its production. Berlinite is a piezoelectric material with potential use as a substitute for quartz in the crystal oscillators, which are components of electronic and electroacoustic equipment. Information gathered here (mostly from published sources) includes historical background, physical properties, end-use applications, criteria of quality, and physio-chemical factors involved in berlinite crystal growth. It is concluded that growing large high-quality berlinite crystal would require high-purity starting materials in an autoclave equipped with a noncorrodible liner and operated with temperature control of ±O.OO5 ac over a range of 250 to 350 ac.

LECTURE, it appears, is a discourse that is supposed to be instructive. I am quite sure that you will derive no instruction from what I have to say. I will be satisfied if my remarks provoke thought along one or two mental paths that have not been traveled so fre¬quently as to be devoid of interest. I have no particular message apropos of professional engineers or professional engineering, and any conclusions that I may seem to reach will be purely tentative and incidental. Probably at times you have wondered, in a casual way at least, why so many people who are not, never have been, and never will be engineers, want to use the title. For example, I recently received a communication from a life insurance broker or salesman, whose chaste letterhead bore the legend "Estate Engineer." He was perfectly serious about it, as is also the expert accountant who assumes the imposing name of cost-analysis engineer. Dozens of equally amazing titles might be cited. Then there is that class of individuals who have been engineers, in the true sense of the word; who have gone into some other kind of occupation; but who cling tenaciously to the name engineer, usually prefixing some word or other which at once gives them away by telling what their work really is. For example, we have such pseudomorphs as the management engineer, and the sales engineer. It is quite evident that engineer is a word to conjure with. Evidently both the man who appro¬priates the designation without any justification and the ex-engineer who persists in calling himself an engineer even after he has abandoned engineer-

Cannington Mine has been developing through paste backfilled stopes since the year 2000. These paste drives have been used as either production drill accesses or long-term bypasses. Prior to this study, the ground support requirements for each paste development cut were: an initial 50 mm layer of fibrecrete, weld mesh bolted with 2.4 m split sets, followed by a second coat of 50 mm fibrecrete. Both layers of fibrecrete and the layer of mesh were to be installed before the next cut could be bored and fired. This support regime proved successful at Cannington, however, the total cycle time for each cut was lengthy due to the installation and curing times associated with each layer of surface support. In an effort to reduce the cycle time a study was carried out, with the aid of RocScience’s Phase2 numerical modelling software. The modelling reviewed all of the parameters controlling the stability of a newly excavated development cut. The parameters studied included the early strength of fibrecrete, the ground support load capacity, and the strength of the paste fill masses which varies depending on the cement content. As a result of the study, the ground support standard was revised. The revision has significantly decreased the cycle time as well as fibrecrete consumption, all the while maintaining the safety of personnel and equipment.

Phosphate mining in Florida generates approximately 100,000 tons/day of phosphatic clays (slime). This waste slime not only creates one of the most difficult disposal problems in the mining industry, but also causes tremendous loss of P2O5. About 20-30% of the phosphate mined end up in phosphatic clays. Recovering the phosphate from this waste is difficult for two main reasons: 1) the slime is extremely fine in size, and 2) clay minerals account for almost half of the material. A half dozen dispersants were evaluated for keeping the clay minerals suspended for subsequent separation from non-clay minerals by either settling or cycloning. The separation efficiency and economics are discussed.

A few years ago, (March 3, 1915) Congress passed a law providing for the establishments of ten mining experiment stations under the supervision of the Bureau of Mines. In 1917 the Secretary of the Interior decided that one of these stations should be devoted to Petroleum, and in the early part of 1918, approved the establishment of the Petroleum Experiment Station at Bartlesville, Oklahoma, upon the condition that the city furnish the site for the buildings and guarantee $50,000. for the erection of the buildings. A building site of 5 acres and the necessary building fund was furnished by the Bartlesville Chamber of Commerce.The buildings consist of an administration and laboratory building, both of brick construction. The former is a two-story structure of eight rooms. A large room occupying over half of the main floor is devoted to the library, reception room, and clerical force. The remaining rooms comprise a drafting room and six offices occupied by the staff assigned to this station. The laboratory is a one-story brick building and contains a well-equipped chemical and physical laboratory, also a machine shop and mechanical laboratory. In addition to the main buildings there now are on the property an experimental refinery, a blue-print house, and a store house. These latter buildings are all of sheet-iron construction.

The Bureau of Mines has written a computer program in FORTRAN to facilitate the calculation of concentrations from X-ray intensities in electron probe microanalysis. Philibert's absorption and Castaing's secondary fluorescence corrections are used; no atomic number correction is included. Background and dead time corrections are applied to the data before calculating the relative intensities. Data from any type of electron probe microanalyzer can be used with the program.

"As an adjunct to its minerals-investigation program, the Bureau of Mines has developed a number of operating devices and techniques worthy of note. This paper, prepared under the supervision of J. H. Hedges, chief, Tucson Branch Mining Division, and under the general supervision of Lowell B. Moon, chief, Mining Division, reports upon certain methods devised to overcome difficulties encountered in cementing of diamond-drill holes at a Bureau of Mines project at Christmas, Gila County, Ariz.Pressure grouting was employed to recondition a caved hole it was desired to reopen and deepen. The hole, which had boon stopped 7 months previously at a depth of 488 feet, was caved below 449 feet in a contact zone of claylike, altered diorite and crumbly metamorphosed limestone. As other means of obtaining moderate pressure were not available, carbon dioxide gas, drawn from tank of liquid carbon dioxide through a pressure reducing and regulating valve, was used. The hole was reopened successfully with 12 grouting jobs.Another hole, where cawing from several water-bearing fractures between 202 and 232 feet gave trouble, was successfully cemented by the use of a grouting plug. An attempt to cement through the rods had failed, owing probably to agitation caused by water currents. Pressure grouting through the caning set above the cave could not be need, because water was forced up outside the casing when pressure was applied. The problem was solved by using a wooden plug 1-13/16 inches in diameter, which, when soaked in water, expanded to a tight fit in an AX hole. A hole was drilled through the plug, and a rubber flap valve was nailed to the lower end. In the upper end of the plug the hole was enlarged to fit loosely over an EX rod coupling finished smooth. The plug was lowered on the end of the drill rods to a point about 10 feet above the cave, where it was allowed to expand tightly to the hole. Cement grout was then pumped through the rods, and the rods were removed from the hole. After allowing time for the cement to set, the wooden plug was chopped out and drilling van resumed.Over 300 tests were made to determine the type of cement most suitable for use on the Christmas job, and the effect of cement-water ratio, temperature, and various admixtures on workability, setting time, and strength. The results of these tests, described in detail in the body of this report, indicate the desirability of thoroughly testing available cements when it is necessary to drill holes under difficult conditions that may cause failure.When it became desirable to reopen and deepen a caved drill hole, it was considered easiest to recondition the hole by pressure grouting, As other mans for obtaining moderate pressure were not available, a method utilizing carbon dioxide gas was employed. The hole was reconditioned successfully with 12 grouting jobs."

Starting in 1980, a committee of the National Research Council studied the question of why some underground coal mines are safer than others and what could be done to improve the ones with poorer performance. The results indicated that safety is improved by management commitment to safety, by cooperation between labor and management on safety matters, and by quality training of employees and managers. Younger mines have higher accident frequencies, but are less likely to be killed or permanently disabled by a lost-time accident. Methods for improving safety performance are proposed.

A resource document, prepared for the Royal Commission on the Health and Safety of Workers in Mines, which outlines aspects of occupational health and safety in the Canadian metallurgical industry has been expanded to provide examples of some practical solutions. General process descriptions are provided in conjunction with some of the major potential hazards associated with each step. Emissions to the working environment, particularly around converters, are discussed. Newer metallurgical processes, the role of automation and other advances in the metallurgical industry are described with respect to their impact on the work place. The role of staff and unit employees in providing safe working conditions in the complex metallurgical plant of today is outlined and the need for close cooperation within the human sector emphasized. The technology is available and is being applied to integrate the complex process requirements with realistic regulations to control emissions and provide a safe, healthy environment in metallurgical plants.

An investigation has been made of 500 samples of universal and sheared plates of basic Bessemer and basic open-hearth steel manufactured by the Pottstown Iron Company, the carbon-limits being 0.07 to 0.18 per cent. Through the courtesy of Mr. W. H. Morris, President, I am able to lag before the Institute the results of these tests. The samples tested were all taken from the finished material, and the chemical determinations were made on drillings from the broken test-pieces, which were sent to the chemist without giving him the heat-numbers. The results are such as to encourage me to keep on with the work, and, if possible, to have it carried out on other steels. It is kith this view that I now offer my tables in their incomplete form. My first table mas constructed by grouping the tests according to chemical analysis in various. ways, and making a rough tabulated statement, from which the ultimate strengths were worked out and carefully compared with the actual results of the tension-tests. From data thus obtained, one table after another was worked out, and by this method of "cutting and trying" I finally arrived at the results which I now present in Table I. (p. 771). I do not claim absolute accuracy, but my approximations have proved to be so close that the figures are practical data for current use at the works. The indications are that a pure iron, without carbon, phosphorus, manganese, or silicon, if it could be obtained, would give 38,000 pounds ultimate strength. This is assumed as a base, and to it is added the effect of each of the above elements, as explained below. The upper part of Table I. gives the ultimate strength due to carbon and phosphorus, and is the same for both basic Bessemer and basic open-hearth steels. The lower part gives the increase in ultimate strength due to manganese. By adding this to the amount obtained from the upper part, we have the ultimate strength of basic Bessemer

A literature search and survey were prepared on the technology of surface hydraulic mining, with particular reference to its possible use in the United States forstripping overburden from surface coal mines. Extensive use was made of Russian references which were translated into English. The advantages and disadvantages of hydraulic mining and hydrotransport are identified as well as criteria for selecting potential applications. At present, the major U.S. application is in the phosphate industry of Florida and North Carolina. Potential locations for hydraulic stripping of overburden from coal seams are identified in the states of Alaska, Illinois, Montana, Washington and Wyoming. Other potential applications include the hydraulic mining of peat in Minnesota, and the stripping of overburden from lignite in Texas, Montana, North Dakota and South Dakota. Further research is recommended, particularly on the subject of dewatering of fine clay slimes to avoid water pollution and to permit rapid reclamation of mined areas.

Nowadays, the HPGR (high-pressure grinding rolls) is an intermediate step between filtering and balling in the most modern iron ore pelletizing operation. The operation debottlenecks filtering process and reduces pressure over the typical milling process to control particle size to the balling. The present study evaluated aspects of microwave application to the iron ore concentrate fed to HPGR in a bench scale unit. Iron ore concentrate was irradiated varying the microwave exposure time and grinding efficiency was evaluated. The moisture influence in the HPGR efficiency was also assessed. The pellet feed blaine surface area (BSA) improved by 300 cm2/g and % < 325# fraction by 3%. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) images show the formation of micro-cracks onto the particle surface induced by microwave; the effect observed helped improve the milling process performance, in addition to the moisture reduction observed due to the temperature increase.

Two manuscripts-one on the history of Phelps Dodge by Arthur Train, Jr., and John L. Lawler, the other a biography of William E. Dodge by Richard Lowitt-have been of the greatest value. King, Bozeman, Mont.: The form of measuring up ore in sight looks very plausible, as illustrated in the paper of Mr. Emmons, but from my experience of many years of mining in Montana and Nevada, I have found it is very hard to measure up anything nearer than a guess of what you have in sight, except in the case of a true vein, or a flat vein where the boundaries are well defined. I have been interested in several miues with Dr. A. R. Ledoux, and I know that my foreman and myself, going into the mines and using our best judgment, could seldom see more than 30 days&apos; supply actually in sight, and yet we were running from 100 to 250 tons a day, and keeping it up year after year. Prof. John D. Irving, New Haven, Conn.: I understand from Mr. Emmons that this is a method which has been found applicable in the copper-mines in Tennessee, where the record could be made with a good deal of accuracy, and where the work in the mines allowed the necessary development to be done, so that the record could be kept up. I do not think there was any intention in his mind to imply that this was applicable to all cases, especially such as Mr. King has mentioned. President Charles Kirchhoff, New York, N. Y. : I think the point is that the paper impresses the necessity for doing it where the possibilities exist. There has been too little attention given to this very matter, particularly in the United States; but I think our English friends are following it very much more zealously, and the demand for it there is possibly greater than it is here, because English boards of directors handle mines that are often very much further away than our own are, and the English public and the English engineers generally are very much more insistent upon seeing how much longer current dividends are going to last, or current assessments are going to continue.

"The Gakara Rare Earth deposit in Burundi (East Africa) is unique for its high grade (e.g., 54.3% TREO on average) and low uranium and thorium levels. The majority of the light rare earth (RE) elements in material from Gakara are contained within the familiar RE minerals bastnaesite and monazite. Extensive metallurgical test work was conducted by SGS Minerals Services on mineral samples collected from the Gakara deposit. Various whole ore hydrometallurgical processing routes were examined in a scoping level test program. Preliminary beneficiation testing was also conducted, though it was determined that only marginal upgrading would be achieved with significant RE losses. Thus a hydrometallurgical process on whole ore was developed to minimize the overall process complexity and achieve maximum RE recovery. Results from the test work will be presented, along with the selected base case flowsheet involving agitated atmospheric sulphation of the RE minerals, RE double sulphate precipitation, caustic conversion, redissolution, and carbonate precipitation. Following the base case flowsheet, a purified cerium free mixed RE carbonate with low levels of radioactive elements was produced.INTRODUCTIONRainbow Rare Earths Limited (Rainbow) is a mining company engaged in the exploration and development of the Gakara rare earth deposit in Burundi; Figure 1 shows the project location. The project is located in the Bujumbura Province and 45 km from the Burundi capital of Bujumbura. Notable for its exceedingly high in-situ grade – 54.3% on average total rare earth oxide (TREO), low uranium and thorium levels and familiar rare earth minerals, bastnaesite and monazite – Gakara is the world’s richest rare earth deposit. The project, a previously operating mine from 1948–1978, has a significant mineral inventory base, a long life of mine, well understood mineralogy, and robust economics. Rainbow is focused on bringing Gakara into production in the near term, ramping up to produce 5,000 t/y of a 54%+ TREO concentrate."
