Session 2, Deep Foundation without Soil Excavation, has attracted no fewer than 22 papers dealing with subjects from soil improvement by grouting, injection, and deep mixing techniques through vibroflotation and special piles, including aspects pertaining to conventional driven and bored piles. In the short time available, it is not possible to both do justice to the papers and provide a critical review of the state-of-the-art. Instead, to meet the objective of making the next half hour worthwhile to the audience, I have chosen to comment on a few special points brought forward in the papers and thereafter to discuss more in detail a couple of aspects I have deemed to be of general interest. Four papers deal with jet-grouting, injection, and deep mixing techniques: DOMSKI, J. J. Reinforcement of subsoil under the foundations of historical buildings in Cracow using deep injection technique. RESTELLI, A. B, BERTERO, M., and LODIGIANI, E. Deep mixing technology to improve the bearing capacity of a very soft clayey soil under an earth embankment.

Despite of significant cost advantages and the positive expierence roof bolting is limited up to 15-20% of all workings at the Cuzbass mines. The low level of application of the technology is the result of specific mining and geological conditions and defects of organization and technical support. When analysing mining and geological conditions of development working maintenance and geomechanical aspects the necessity of changing of technological schemes of preparation and extraction of mine sections is obvious. The prospects of large-scaled transferring from frame support to roof bolting are connected with introduction the technology of support with the help of non- expanding bolt classes including bolts with mineral filler fixation. The design of bolters with mineral filler fixation is given here. The results of testing of bolt load characteristics in artificial holes and in situ are proved the technology efficient. For increasing of drilling works efficiency it is necessary to master the production of oilless compressor and heading machines with the manipulator. For bolt dimension forecast it is recommended to use the relations of measured parameters of "dome" to roof shifts. Effective monitoring of rock pressure in the junctions is connected with the use of support of conventional bolts together with bolts of deep installation with simultaneous supporting of face ends with special mechanical sets, which compensate face length change.

Following several roof falls in the E3 longwall development of a Consol Pennsylvania Coal Company underground coal mine, an underground roof geology reconnaissance program consisting of twenty-nine 20-foot deep roof holes had identified the presence of thick sandstone layers with abundant shale and micaceous streaks. The base of the sandstone was 4 to 8 feet above the roof line within the fall areas. The presence of micaceous streaks created extremely pronounced planes of weakness in the sandstone. A structural irregularity, which extends into the E4 and E5 developments, exists between crosscuts I 1 and 30,where all roof falls occurred. Immediately to the east of this structural irregularity lies a huge syncline. The presence of thick sandstone units within the typically all shale environment and within such a structural irregularity helps to maximize stress concentration and creates closely spaced joints in the sandstone, which explains why many cracks are present in the macroscopically massive sandstone upon development. The approaching E2 longwall gob to the south and on the down-dip side, on the other hand, provided horizontal stress relief in the sandstone, which helps to explain the many roof falls in the E3 development that occurred during or immediately after the formation of the E2 gob. Finite element modeling confirmed the presence of such horizontal stress relief. Since the E3 longwall was a right-handed face, stress concentration was expected at the longwall headgate T -junctions, and further delamination of the sandstone was expected upon arrival of the E3 longwall face. Based on the results of the roof geology reconnaissance program and a roof stability analysis that took into account up to eleven parameters, supplemental headgate and track roof support consisting of 16-foot and 20-foot long cable bolts was successfully implemented within the zone of thick sandstone with micaceous streaks and structural irregularity and at other potential roof instability areas along the E3 development. The cable bolts were designed to be anchored at least 4 feet above the sandstone unit into the mostly competent sandy shale layers. No headgate roof control problem was reported within the sandstone and structural irregularity zone during E3 and the subsequent E4 longwall extractions.

Na indústria da mineração, a liga Fe-Cr-C destaca-se como um revestimento duro em chapas de desgaste objetivando aumentar a vida útil do ativo. Três ligas, duas delas contendo Fe-Cr-C, sendo uma com aproximadamente 28% (p) de Cr e outra com 38% (p) de Cr e uma terceira liga com 24% (p) de Cr e 7,0% (p) de Nb foram levadas a ensaios de desgaste abrasivo roda de borracha conforme norma ASTM G65-04, além de medições de dureza, microdureza e caracterizações microestruturais. Constatou-se que os revestimentos contendo Nb, depositados com uma ou duas camadas de solda, possuem maior resistência ao desgaste abrasivo, seguidos pelos com maior teor de Cr. Os revestimentos que possuem maior fração volumétrica de carbonetos, finamente distribuídos na matriz, apresentaram os melhores resultados na resistência ao desgaste. Analisando no microscópio confocal 3D os revestimentos contendo Cr, notou-se que os mecanismos de desgaste são do tipo microcorte e microssulcamento, enquanto naqueles contendo nióbio prevalece o desgaste por rolamento em boa parte da superfície. A liga contendo Nb apresenta o melhor desempenho na resistência ao desgaste abrasivo em relação às demais, e se torna viável economicamente sua aplicação na indústria.

"Modal data from Red Dog Main Pit ores were collected and analysed on a size-by-size basis. The Main Pit data were compared to data from composite samples of Red Dog Aqqaluk ores. The data revealed that a large fraction of the sphalerite in the Aqqaluk baritic ore was tied up in sphalerite/galena binaries. This provided an explanation for its poor leadlzinc selectivity compared to Main Pit ores. The Aqqaluk vein ore exhibited levels of sphalerite/galena binaries comparable to that of Main Pit ores resulting in comparable lead/zinc selectivity.An attempt was made to correlate the modal and metallurgical data for Main Pit stockpiles. It was found that there was moderate correlation between the percentage of sphalerite locked in binaries with galena in the <C5>C6 size fi-action and sphalerite deportment to the leadconcentrate.INTRODUCTIONTeck Cominco’s Red Dog Mine in northern Alaska is one of the richest zinc districts in the world. Red Dog Mine has been in operation for over ten years and produces nearly 1 million tonnes of zinc concentrate per mum. Red Dog Mine is an open pit operation and current mining is conducted in the area known as the Main Pit. The Main Pit contains proven reserves of about 41 900 000 tonnes of ore grading 19.2% Zn and 5.2% Pb (Cominco 2000). To the north of the Main Pit is the Aqqaluk deposit. It contains probable reserves of 56 100 000 tonnes of ore grading 16.6% Zn and 4.1 % Pb. After the Main Pit has been exhausted, the Aqqaluk deposit will be exploited.The Aqqaluk deposit consists of three main geologic ore types: baritic, siliceous and vein. The siliceous ore type is dominant, representing 64% of the mineralisation. Composite samples of these ore types were created from drill core and batch flotation tests were performed on them. The flotation tests indicated that there were significant metallurgical differences between Main Pit ore and the Aqqaluk siliceous and baritic ore. The siliceous and baritic ores were found to suffer from poor lead/zinc selectivity (Lin 1999, G&T 1999). It was suspected that there were problems with the original Aqqaluk composite samples, thus a new set of composite samples were created and batch flotation tests were conducted again. In this set of tests, the new baritic ore still suffered from leadlzinc selectivity problems, but the new siliceous ore provided excellent metallurgical results. A summary of the flotation results is given in Table 1. Stockpile 132, which is typical of Main Pit ore, is given for comparison purposes. The mineral suite at Red Dog is relatively simple. The ore consists of galena, sphalerite and pyrite in a silicate matrix. The low zinc recoveries of the baritic ore were largely due to sphalerite losses to the lead concentrate."

Mineral maps produced via optical and scanning electron microscope û mineral liberation analyser (SEM-MLA) automated mineral identification systems are being used to examine the relationships between mineral phases in spatially well-constrained samples of intact and crushed rock. The use of sophisticated image analysis software allows data pertaining to individual or groups of mineral phases to be extracted from the mineral maps. Analyses of the extracted data can be used to identify populations of phases. Data extracted from the images can be compared with mineral processing data, eg hardness, grindability, degree of liberation, from the same sampling intervals, enabling ore characterisation to be linked to processing behaviours in a spatially constrained, quantified manner that can potentially assist with mine planning and optimisation.

Surveying of a bench face before blasting is a pre-requisite for a proper blast planning and for a satisfying blasting result both in terms of safety and fragmentation. When surveying a bench face, preferably a large amount of measurement points are required in order to determine the geometry and especially the irregularities with sufficient accuracy. Only contact-free measuring systems allow evenly distributed measurements over the whole bench surface. Existing systems such as total station, laser profiler, or laser scanner show significant drawbacks such as that surveying results are just isolated values of the bench geometry such as heights or profiles, that borehole positions have to be defined in advance in order to know where to take profile measurements and that systems require special surveying skills and that they are expensive too. In order to overcome these difficulties and to provide the blasters a simple tool for bench surveying, blast design and layout and the subsequent back-transfer of the blast plan into the quarry, the Department of Mineral Resources& Petroleum Engineering of the University of Leoben, 3G Software & Measurement company and Mineral AB, one of the largest producers of aggregates in Europe formed a joint venture to develop a new system. Based on an existing stereophotogrammetric system for rock surface surveying and joint analysis (JointMetrix), a new tool was developed within a year. Apart from several mines and quarries using that new tool already today in the daily work, both the Department of Mineral Resources& Petroleum Engineering at the University of Leoben and Austin Powder GmbH Blasting Service did a lot of studies to determine the reliability of the new stereophotogrammetric blast surveying and planning system and its precision in comparison to classical laser surveying equipment. After 1 year of testing and comparison with laser based surveying instruments, it can be concluded, that the new technology of blast surveying& design systems based on stereophotogrammetry is suitable for being used in the daily work routine in quarries and mines. The comparison of the precision of laser based systems and stereophotogrammetric systems has shown, that the deviation between these two types of systems is less than 10 cm, in many cases even lower.

Thallous chloride and cadmium metal were recovered from a thallium-cadmium concentrate by a method suited to the treatment of small batches. Differences in oxide solubility and control of pH were employed to separate the thallium and cadmium. The cadmium metal produced by zinc reduction analysed better than 99.95 per cent Cd and thallous chloride of high purity was precipitated from solution.

This paper discusses the comparative performances of the three activated carbon adsorption circuits at the West Wits operations of Anglogold. These circuits consist of two pump-cell circuits (at Two Plant, formerly Elandsrand and at Three plant) and a conventional counter-current adsorption circuit (at Mponeng plant). The implications of the improved performance of the pump-cell plants are discussed.

Equilibria involving Cu-Pt alloys, copper oxides, and atmospheres of known ox2gen pressures have been determined at 1000&apos; and 1200 C. The data obtained have been used to calculate activity-composition relations in the alloys. A moderate negative deviation from ideality is found. At high copper concentrations, the results of the present study are in good agreement with those of previous investigators, whereas at low copper concentrations the activities obtained in this investigation are slightly higher than those reported previously. The present study is part of a research program dealing with the determination of phase relations and thermodynamic properties of copper-containing systems at high temperatures. The information available for such systems is very scanty, particularly for copper oxides and their combinations with other oxide components. Platinum is commonly used as a container in studies of oxide equilibria. To evaluate quantitatively the extent of reaction between the oxide and the container, a knowledge of activity-composition relations in Cu-Pt alloys is necessary. Such data are not available for Cu-Pt alloys in the temperature range of particular interest in the present research program, and particularly for alloys low in copper. Studies of various aspects of the systems Cu-Pt and Cu-0 have been reported in previous literature. The system Cu-Pt is known1 to form a continuous solid-solution series above 812.C, whereas ordered phases are present in certain composition ranges at lower temperatures. Thermodynamic data for the system have been reviewed by Hultgren et al.,&apos; who presented free energies of mixing at 65Oo C, mainly derived from electromotive force cell measurements by Weibke and Matthes.3 Enthalpies of mixing at 640°C have been obtained by Oriani and Murphy4 with liquid tin calorime-try. Their results differ considerably from those derived from the temperature dependence of the data of Weibke and Matthes. Thermodynamic data for the disordered alloys have been obtained by Assayag,5 and more recently by Schmahl and Minzl,6 by Myles and Darby,7 and by McCormack, Myers, and Saxer.8 The two latter sets of data7&apos;&apos; became available after the present study was completed. In the system Cu-0+ two oxides are stable at high temperatures, CuO and CuzO+ each having only minor deviations from stoichiometry. Equilibria in the liquidus temperature region of the system Cu2O-CuO have been studied by Roberts and systemsmyth,9&apos;10CuzO-CuO by Vogel and ocher,I1 by Osterwald,12 and recently the the present authors.13 The system is of the eutectic type with a eutectic temperature of 1083.C The composition of the eutectic liquid corresponds to Xcu0 = °.44, and the oxygen pressure of the coexisting gas phase is Po2 = 0.55 atm.13 Equilibrium oxygen pressures for coexistence of solid CuO and solid Cu2O have been determined by Schmahl and Muller,l4 by Gadalla, Ford, and white,l5 by Bidwell,16 and recently by the present authors.13 There is reasonably good agreement among the various sets of data. Free energies of formation of Cu2O(s) from the elements have been derived by Tretyakov,17 by Bidwell,16 by Kiukkola and wagner,18 by Pal&apos;guev and Neuimin," and by Steele and Alcock,20 There is particularly good agreement among the latter three1&apos;-20 sets of data. Keywords: Pyrometallurgy, furnace, platinum Mortimer Smelter is one of the three smelting operations in the Anglo Platinum Group. It is located in the Limpopo Province, approximately 100 km north of Rustenburg, and approximately 15 km west of Northam. The smelter operation is the smallest of the three smelting operations in the group, with a smelting capacity of 170 kt/annum. The operation consists of a Larox filtration plant, a Drytech flash drying plant, a modified Elkem / Hatch 19.5 MVA furnace, and a 60 t/h matte crushing plant. The operation does not convert its furnace matte, and hence the final sulphide rich matte is transported to and processed further at the Anglo Platinum Converting Process (ACP) within the Waterval Smelter Complex in Rustenburg. Furnace slag is granulated, and processed through a slag mill, or transported to a slag dump.

This is the fifth annual tabulation of mineral royalty information. This tabulation, like the previous editions, includes all of the earlier data. There are also 60 new entries. In addition to royalty information, some entries show the cost of purchased reserves. Two articles relative to the evaluation of minerals reserves appeared in December, 1986. R.H. Paschall (In the Aggregate, ME, p 1139) wrote a good article, although it lacked specific royalty data. However, this author takes exception to two ideas in Paschall&apos;s column. Paschall contends that the royalty rate does not affect the mineral appraisal. This present author could not disagree more. Paschall also claims the location of an industrial mineral deposit is the only serious or practical caveat in comparing royalties. Comments received here from readers helped make the list of caveats that are cited each year. The readers will decide which factors influence the mineral value for their commodities of interest. Paschall&apos;s point about the relationship of the parties who are negotiating a royalty agreement is important and very well taken. The other article, written by William Vernon (Pit and Quarry, December 1986), gives a step-by-step process on how to conduct a mineral appraisal. The article cites three reasons for an appraisal: transfer rights; collateral for a loan; and taxation. A fourth reason is to establish adequate compensation for reserves lost through condemnation. This author has appeared in several court cases where compensation for loss of mineral reserves through condemnation required a mineral appraisal. Royalty rate becomes an important factor in the appraisal process, although the Pit and Quarry article refers to that part of the valuation equation as "profitability." Both articles were well written and are recommended reading for those interested in mineral valuations. The same caveats that have appeared in previous columns relative to factors that influence the value of reserves are restated. The data in the table serve as a general reference and are not intended to present an absolute scale of reserves costs. Several factors influence the value of any mineral commodity. The factors include: • location/transportation - especially significant for most industrial minerals; • market conditions both for the commodity and the company acquiring the right to mine; • quality or grade of the deposit as it reflects the amount of processing/beneficiation necessary to produce the finished product; and • legislative restrictions and conditions for mining a given material at a given site. These and other factors will significantly influence the cost of reserves. The table shows the range of royalties and the variations in the basis of computing the fees. In a few instances, it gives the cost of acquired reserves based on purchase price and quantitative estimates of the material in place. The table lists the commodity in column 1, and the subsequent columns give: • the location by state, US geographic area, or Canadian province ; • the cost - R for royalty and P for purchased cost; • the year in which the lease or purchase agreement occurred; and • comments or footnotes for more information. The cost column requires more explanation. MeTallographic specimens whose surfaces are to be investigated are too thick to allow either light or electrons to pass through them for microexamination by transmission. This difficulty is overcome with optical microscopes by illuminating the surface through the objective lens. For electron microscopes best results are obtained by preparing thin replicas of the surface of the specimen, placing them in the microscope and passing the electron beam through them. Since electron microscopes represent a rather recent invention, they have found little application as compared with optical microscopes. This is true because, aside from the cost of new equipment and development of new techniques, some of the older replica methods necessitated the destruction of the surface from which a thin transparent replica was obtained. In other processes in which the surface is preserved, either too tedious a procedure is required, unsuited to "mass-production" requirements of industrial laboratories, or replicas of insufficient contrast and sharpness are produced. In general, investigations with the electron microscope involve five steps: (I) polishing the surface of the metal specimen, (2) proper etching of the surface, (3) preparing the suitable replica from the surface, (4) examination and phorography in electron microscope and (5) interpretation. Preparation of Metal Surfaces Usual metallographic polishing is generclly satisfactory. It is important though that the final polish be applied very carefully, since otherwise evidence of a small amount of deformation might show up even on relatively deeply etched surfaces. A high-power microscope should be used to determine the suitability of the polish and etch. This, of course, is not different from optical examinations, but in these, if a deep etch is used, the problem is less serious. It is frequently difficult to detect with optical microscopes poor polishing aside fiom superficial scratches before etching. Figs. I and 2 show micrographs of "well" and "poorly" polished nickel etched by immersing the sample for 20 min. in a solution containing 8 grams cupric sulphate in 40 C.C. of concentrated HCl and 40 C.C. of Hz0 (Marble&apos;s reagent). The sample shown in Fig. I was polished in its final stages for 5 min. on a carborundum wheel followed by ro min. on a rouge wheel, whereas the sample shown in Fig. 2 was polished only I min. on the rouge wheel. Generally, this procedure does not guarantee that the surface of the specimen will be either undistorted or deformed. It was applied here merely to show the effects Of good and poor polishing. Hydrogen and carbon monoxide reduction data were obtained on pelletized materials of the type currently being prepared commercially in Australia.Pellets, approximately 1 cm diameter, made from Deepdale, Iron Prince, and Mt. Newman iron ore were reduced by hydrogen over the temperature range 500&#176;-900&#176;C and the reduced pellets were examined by thermogravimetric, microscopic, electron probe, and x-ray techniques. After an initial time delay it was found that up to 95 per cent reduction the data could be described by a porous model where gaseous diffusion through the solid is rate controlling. Independent measurements of effective diffusivity supported the values obtained from the reduction data. Above 95 per cent reduction the rate decreased markedly due to the formation of retained wustite or fayalite.Comparison with reduction by carbon monoxide over the temperature range 750&#176;-900&#176;C showed that the rate of reduction was approximately five times slower than for reduction by hydrogen.The rate of reduction was found to be a function of the initial properties of the pellets which may account for the widely conflicting results that have been obtained with previous investigations on porous pellets.

Generating short- and long-term mine production schedules in isolation and independently from each other means that only a local optimum can be achieved when each scheduling phase is carried out. The globally optimal solution however, can be achieved when integrating scheduling phases and accounting for the interaction between short-term and long-term activities simultaneously. This paper addresses the task of integrating short- and long-term production plans by combining the short-term objective of minimising deviation to targeted mill feed grade with the long-term objective of maximising net present value (NPV) into a single mathematical model. A case study is presented which compares the present values of the same stope data set scheduled via separate long and short-term models and than by the proposed integrated model which applies a predetermined penalty for each tonne of metal deviation to target for the respective ore tonnage being processed. This allows an operation to obtain a globally optimal scheduling regime when taking into consideration the cost and loss of value resulting from fluctuations in grade to the mill over the short-term.

Following the discovery by CRA of gold at Mt Kare, and the subsequent 1988-90 gold rush, mechanised mining of the alluvial resource is now being carried by a company jointly owned by CRA (51%) and landowners of the area (49%). Mining is currently being carried out using small gravity processing plants fed by hydraulic excavators. Use of hydraulic mining techniques will be limited to over- coming difficulties related to the high clay content of the material and the soft nature of the bedrock. Current resource estimates suggest that the alluvials will have a mining life of three to four years. During this time, exploration of the hydrothermal gold mineralisation at Mt Kare will be carried out by a wholly-owned company of CRA. It is hoped that this will lead to establishment of an economic primary gold resource.
