The minerals sector continues to draw attention from policy makers who would want to see both old and new mineral projects add value to the minerals in the host country. The current technological development in the leaching of manganese oxide ores to produce a high-purity manganese sulphate monohydrate, a compound that is used in the manufacture of batteries for electric vehicles or long-life storage cells for the renewable energy market, has led to junior mining companies spearheading this technology in new projects across the globe. In this paper, we researched the high-purity manganese sulphate monohydrate project pipeline and used projected production volumes and C1 cash costs to construct the industry supply curve for six projects, including the K.Hill project owned by Giyani Metals Corporation near Kanye, in the southern part of Botswana. The aim was to determine the ideal conditions that would provide a comparative advantage for further local value addition to high-purity manganese sulphate monohydrate and to the end user product. The results showed that while the estimated C1 cash costs would place the K.Hill project as the second highest cost producer from among five projects, it would nonetheless have healthy profit margins due to the high projected price of high-purity manganese sulphate monohydrate. The study recommended policy options, which, if implemented, could further encourage the exploitation and value addition of battery metals in Botswana.

This paper describes the methods and costs of deepening the 3-compartment underground shaft in the Hooper Tunnel adit at the Bunker Hill & Sullivan Mining and Concentrating Company Crescent mine in the Coeur d'Alene mining region, 7 miles east of Kellogg, Shoshone County, Idaho. The work was done with the aid of a Defense Minerals Exploration Administration contract (No. Idm-E493, Docket No. DMEA-2764). Preparation for deepening the shaft was begun March 26, 1953, and sinking was completed May 27, 1954. The shaft, bottomed at 1,275.5 feet in 1939, was deepened to 3,276 feet, using mechanical mucking and intermediate pockets. A total of 50,349 man-hours was required to complete the work of sinking 2,000.5 feet, cutting 7 pump stations, and driving 2 pocket raises. The rate of advance was 7.1 feet of shaft per operating day, or 8.4 feet per day of actual sinking. The total direct cost for sinking was $205.20 per foot.

In 1919 the United States was threatened with a shortage of gaso- line. In spite of this well-known fact, a detailed field investigation has shown that in one stage only of handling crude oil the volume of gasoline that evaporates is equal to one-thirtieth of the country's yearly gasoline production. This loss occurs during the few days that the oil is stored on the leases before being taken by the pipe line, and in 1919, in the Mid-Continent field alone, it amounted to 122,100,000 gallons. Large as it is, it is only a part of the loss on the lease. Investigation has further shown that the gasoline in crude oil evaporates from one-half to six-tenths as rapidly as the same gaso- line after being distilled and stored, all evaporative conditions being the same. Many wastes in the oil fields are called "necessary." By this is meant that the cost of preventing the waste is greater than the gain through saving. Evaporation losses have fallen heretofore in this category, but now they must be considered unnecessary. In other words, it is no longer economical for any handler of crude oil to permit losses through evaporation. In accordance with its purpose of seeking to conserve mineral resources, the Bureau of Mines investigated the loss of gasoline by evaporation in the storage and handling of petroleum. Inasmuch as most producers had not decided that their losses justified cor- rective measures and no evidence was available on the comparative losses in various stages of handling the oil, the investigation was limited to determining by experiment and observation the nature and magnitude of evaporation losses, where the greatest losses are, and the factor controlling evaporation.

"Copper anode slime is a precious secondary source for the recovery of silver. However, current recovery process are constrained by either sever pollution or high cost. To cover the drawbacks of current process, this research employed a novel strategy by using the manganese dioxide as the oxidant in acid solution, which avoided the generation of sulfur dioxide while high silver extraction rate was achieved. The effects of manganese dioxide, sulfur acid concentration, stirring speed, temperature and leaching time on silver extraction rate were investigated. The silver recovery reached to 91.68% under the conditions of 1.2 g manganese, 2.0 mol/L H2SO4, 300 rpm, 80 °C and 6 h. INTRODUCTION Copper anode slime is generated from the electrolysis refining of copper and is extremely precious for its containing noble metal such as silver (Chatterjee, 1996; Amer, 2003; Yldrm et al., 2014; Syed, 2016; Wang et al., 2017). Therefore it is of great significance to extract silver from anode slime for the full utilization of resource. Pyrometallurgy is the most mature process for the extraction of silver because of its stability and adaptability (Hait et al., 2009; Zhao et al., 2010; Gao et al., 2017). However, it also suffers the drawbacks of high operating cost, low extraction rate of silver and severe pollution of smoke dust (usually containing lead and arsenic) (Ludvigsson and Larsson, 2003). To cover the drawbacks of pyrometallurgy process, more and more attentions are giving to the semi-hydrometallurgy process which usually includes a pretreatment process of sulphatising roast or low temperature oxidizing roasting (Tishchenko, 1964). After pretreatment, the refractory silver bearing phases (silver selenide, silver sulfide and silver) are converted into readily leached forms which are often extracted by ammonia, sodium sulfite in alkaline solution (Valiuniene et al., 2010; Wojciech, and Kitka, 2017). Despite its relatively high extraction rate and low investment, it still has the disadvantages of releasing harmful gases since the sulfur dioxide are generally generated in the pretreatment process. In addition, the use of ammonia can easily lead to a leaking into the atmosphere once not carefully dealt with (Aylmore and Muir, 2001). As for silver recovery by sulfite leaching, the consumption of sodium sulfite is rather high which often results in a pipe blocked (Yang et al., 2006)."

Os aços inoxidáveis austeníticos são materiais utilizadas nos ramos petroquímico, nuclear e aeroespacial cujas demandas se resumem essencialmente à: boa resistência mecânica, excelente soldabilidade e elevada resistência à corrosão. Apesar destes metais atenderem a estes requisitos, não raro são submetidos a etapas de conformação para elaboração de peças, o que pode modificar as suas propriedades originais. Basicamente, a causa desta mudança são alterações metalúrgicas induzidas por deformação, como a transformação da austenita (paramagnética) em martensita-a’ (ferromagnética). Tendo em vista que tais mudanças são acompanhadas de variações nas propriedades elétricas/ magnéticas destes aços, uma maneira de monitorá-los de maneira não destrutiva é através da técnica de correntes parasitas. Para este estudo, diversas amostras de aço inoxidável AISI 321 foram solubilizadas e deformadas por laminação a fim de produzirem diferentes frações volumétricas de martensita. Em seguida, submetidas à microscopia ótica, magnetômetro de amostra vibrante e correntes parasitas. De acordo com os resultados, percebe-se que toda a transformação martensítica se passa no intervalo entre 0,10 e 0,55 de deformação verdadeira. Além disso, com os dados de magnetização de saturação, foi possível estabelecer uma curva de calibração de comportamento exponencial, permitindo a quantificação da martensita de maneira não destrutiva.

Introduction This paper outlines the causes of underground fires at Noranda Mines and the precautionary measures taken to guard against such fi res. Shafts There are six shafts (Figures and lA) on the property, of which N os. 1 and 2 are abandoned. Nos. 3, 4, and 5 are the present working openings from surface and No 6 is an internal shaft. No. 3 is used primarily as a service shaft, while Nos.?1 and 5 are the main hoisting shafts. Orebodies The orebodies are of two distinct types. There are the massive sulphide bodies, and the areas of mineralized rhyolite containing gold values and a silica content high enough for fluxing purposes. The massive sulphide bodies contain chalcopyl'ite, pyrite, pyrrhotite, and minor amounts of sphalerite and magnetite. The concentration of particular sulphides varies even within the same body. It is the areas high in pyrite, and to a lesser degree those, high in pyrrhotite, that are of particular interest.

Al - 5.5 wt% Mg - 0.3 wt% Cu alloy strip was successfully fabricated by horizontal-type twinroll casting (TRC). For producing sound strips with no surface defect, the casting was conducted at various roll rotation speed, and the sound strip could be obtained at relatively low casting speed (3 rpm). The cast strip was homogenized at 450 °C for 10 hours, and then cold rolled with a reduction rate of 78%, followed by a final annealing at 450 °C for 1 hour. The annealed sheets showed good mechanical properties with approximately 330 MPa in tensile strength and 27 % in elongation, but exhibited strong anisotropy depending on the tensile directions. For the homogenized sheets, warm rolling was also conducted at 200, 300, and 400 °C. The tensile test results of the warm-rolled sheets showed that the rolling at medium temperature (300 °C) was proper to fabricate the sheets with relatively good mechanical properties and low anisotropy.

Along with the humanitarian need for preventing accidents the cost of injuries must be considered. As a means of bringing the facts concerning the prevalence of accidents in mining and their direct cost before the operating officials and others interested in accident prevention in the mining industry, the United. States Bureau of Mines ha as recently made studies and published reports dealing with these subjects in several States 4. This report gives available data on the causes and direct costs of accidents in Virginia coal mines for the 4-year period 1929 to 1932, inclusive. Mounting compensation costs and insurance rates resulting from mine injuries indicate the necessity of measures to decrease the number and severity of accidents. These direct costs, as well as additional losses of an indirect nature, can be eliminated from the cost of production to the extent that accidents are prevented or reduced in severity.

MERCURY, also widely known as quicksilver, ranks tenth in quantity in world output of nonferrous metals. However, its unusual and desirable combination of properties- liquid liquidity at ordinary temperatures, high density, uniform volume expansion, electrical conductivity, ability to alloy readily, high surface tension, chemical stability, and toxicity of its compounds -gives mercury an industrial and military importance out of proportion to the small physical size of the production industry. Although mercury has been known and used for over 20 centuries, until the 16th century consumption was small and chiefly in medicine. Since then mercury's applications have paralleled scientific advancements, kind current principal uses of mercury are in electrical apparatus, industrial and control instruments, agriculture, pharmaceuticals, and the electrolytic prepa¬ration of chlorine and caustic soda. Other materials may be substituted for mercury in come applications; yet, for those uses that require mercury's unusual combination of physical and chemical properties, there is no ideal substitute.

Using a robotic 4kW Nd:YAG-laser system, Inconel 718 (1 mm sheet) was welded with and without filler wire to investigate the effect of processing parameters, including power input and welding speed, on the weld geometry, microstructure and mechanical properties. By means of both nondestructive testing and microscopic examination, the weld quality was studied to determine the nature of the welding defects (porosity, cracking and bead shape) over the processing range of 3-3.5 kW for the power input and 4.5-6 m-min-1 for the welding speed. Application of the design of experiment methodology permitted the examination of the relationship between the process parameters and mechanical properties, from which the optimized laser welding conditions could be determined for joining Inconel 718. In particular, the research results indicate that Nd:YAG-laser welding technology can achieve defects free, mechanically sound welds with narrow fusion and heat effected zones.

A Method to Calculate Hydrodynamic Loads on Underground Bulkheads Bulkheads are structures built in openings in underground mines to impound water, preventing the water from entering the active mine workings. These structures not only have to be designed to withstand the static, hydraulic pressure, but also the dynamic or seismic pressure, which would be generated by an earthquake. Bulkheads can be considered underground dams. Unlike dams on the surface, bulkheads are often subjected to hydraulic heads that exceed the heights of the bulkheads. Theodor von Karman in 1933, and Westergaard earlier, developed the equation by which the hydrodynamic pressures on surface dams could be calculated. Civil engineering handbooks of today contain this equation. In this paper, using the methodology developed by von Karman and Westergaard, the authors have developed an equation by which the hydrodynamic forces on bulkheads could be calculated when the hydraulic head exceeds the height of the bulkhead.

EQUIREMENTS of montan wax for industrial use in the United States before World War II were met by imports, nearly all of which came from Germany. An important industry for extraction and refinement of this wax from certain brown coals had developed in Germany. At the beginning of the war, montan-wax imports were shut oft, and American industry was forced to rely largely on substitutes. Since the war, relatively small amounts have been imported from Czechoslovakia. Because of the shortage of montan wax at the close of the war and the fact that industry in the United States had to rely on foreign sources in the past, this investigation was started in 1945 to determine probable yields of wax from domestic lignite. Results of the investigation and the properties of extracted waxes are described in this report. Also included in the report are discussions of the occurrence and geology of lignite deposits of the United States from which samples were obtained for wax extraction and the petrographic composition of lignites, particularly in respect to those components that contribute to wax yields.

The investment worth of a mineral deposit can only be realistically evaluated in relation to specific engineering design criteria, which fully details the proposed method of exploitation. These criteria have not in general been taken into serious consideration when leaseholders have reported reserves in the past. In fact, many "reserve" figures quoted are probably more correctly classified as geological resources. The industry now recognises that it is necessary to take into consideration not only grade and mill recovery factors, but also likely mining and processing costs as well as the current market price for the commodity. Once having estimated those costs which are applicable to the resource under study, they can be deducted from the gross inherent worth of the orebody to result in an estimate of the potential net revenue. Through a process of interactive trial mine designs and evaluation, reserves can be quantified to provide an estimate of the available recoverable economic reserves given a set of assumed cost and operational parameters. It follows then, that the available economic reserve recoverable from a given resource will vary from time-to-time as cost and price factors vary in response to changing technology and economic factors. A methodology is described which may be used to derive economic recoverable reserves based on a computerised model of the geological resource data and appropriate economic and operational cost algorithms. Examples are provided from both coal and gold studies to illustrate the impact of economic criteria on the magnitude of the reserve figure reported for each project.

Revolutionary changes in the organization of work have far outpaced our knowledge about the implications of these changes for the quality of working life and for safety and health on the job. This gap in knowledge is one of the 21 priority areas for research under the National Occupational Research Agenda (NORA)—a framework crafted by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and its partners to guide research into the next decade. This report was developed under NORA as the first attempt to develop a comprehensive research agenda for investigating and reducing occupational safety and health risks associated with the changing organization of work. Research and development needs identified in the agenda include (1) improved surveillance mechanisms to better track how the organization of work is changing, (2) accelerated research on safety and health implications of the changing organization of work, (3) increased research focus on organizational interventions to protect safety and health, and (4) steps to formalize and nurture organization of work as a distinctive field in occupational safety and health.

"Argillaceous rock formations, in particular clay shales, are notorious for creating challenges in rock engineering. Due to their generally low hydraulic conductivity and their complete saturation in their natural state at depth, the behavior of clay shales is usually characterized by a strong hydro-mechanical coupling.This paper presents typical pore pressure responses monitored in different underground rock laboratories and explores alternative ways for their interpretation. The underpinning processes and their relevance are identified based on analytical and conceptual numerical models. Pore pressure monitoring data from Opalinus clay at the Mont Terri Underground laboratory, the Boom Clay at the Mol facility and the Callovo-Oxfordian clay in the Meuse/Haute–Marne URL show a similar pore-pressure response associated with stress changes accompanying tunnel construction although the tunnels were built in different rock types, at different locations, and under different in-situ conditions.The numerical analyses in this study shows that the pore pressure response around an excavation in low permeable clay shales may have different explanations. Pore pressure drops observed in the tunnel near field can theoretically be explained by both, a pure elastic response in an isotropic or anisotropic rock mass with an anisotropic stress state, or a inelastic response and related dilatancy. However, a comparison between the numerical models and the in-situ measurements revealed that the latter is more likely. This conclusion is justified by the observation that pore pressure drops occur significantly ahead of the tunnel face which is not the case in elastic numerical simulations. Pore pressure measurements in the far field, where failure processes are unlikely to occur, can only partly be explained by a linear poroelastic models. The introduction of an anisotropic material plays a key role in reproducing the responses, conceptually."

INTRODUCTION The term "dewatering" refers to removal of water from coal. Water associated with coal can be categorized as "free or surface" and "inherent or chemically bound" moisture.' The free moisture is found on the surface of coal, in capillaries and small spaces between two or more particles. The inherent or chemically bound water is found in the interior of the coal and as part of coal structure. A significant amount of free moisture can be removed by mechanical dewatering techniques. However, inherent moisture can only be removed by applying energy intensive techniques, e.g., direct or indirect heating. Moisture in the coal offsets some of the benefits of coal cleaning. Extra water in clean coal adds to extra cost in transportation, heat lost during vaporization, and plugging of chutes. From a utility perspective, a 1 % increase in moisture can offset a 4.5% decrease in ash.2 Mechanical dewatering can be classified into two major process categories according to the principles involved, namely, 1. Sedimentation-liquid is constrained and particles move freely. 2. Filtration-particles are constrained by a medium and the liquid flows through. Each of the process categories is composed of various separation techniques shown in Fig. Equipment currently being used by the mechanical dewatering of coal of varying size ranges and final moisture content is illustrated in Fig. 8-2. This figure indicates that sizes larger than 13/, in. (37.5 mm) present no particular dewatering problem. Shaker screens of the very crudest types and designs are capable of producing these sizes at low surface moistures. High-speed vibrators are used for the intermediate sizes and can be used for smaller sizes down to 0.02 in. (0.5 mm) if high moistures (15% surface moisture or greater) can be tolerated in the product. Usually, however, the vibrator is not used below 3/, to 3/, in. (9.5 to 6.3 mm) because of the moisture associated with these fine sizes. At this level, centrifugal force is usually employed to aid dewatering. Abandoned coal mines have many underground space resources, such as roadways, shafts, and gobs. Among them, abandoned roadways are the best gas storage space for underground compressed air energy storage (CAES). However, CAES caverns have high air pressure and strict sealing requirements. Therefore, the stability and sealing of abandoned roadways under high internal pressure must be analyzed. Afterward, the suitability of abandoned roadways used for CAES caverns should be evaluated. In this study, the numerical simulation software FLAC3D was used to calculate the stress, deformation, plastic zone volume, and pore pressure of surrounding rock in an abandoned roadway under 10 MPa internal pressure. The influence of buried depth, surrounding rock grade, and in situ stress state on roadway stability and the effect of surrounding rock permeability on roadway sealing were analyzed. Results showed that the stress, displacement, and plastic zone volume of surrounding rock were affected by high internal pressure when the buried depth was less than 300 m, but high internal pressure had little effect on them when the buried depth was more than 300 m. The suitable range of buried depth was more than 300 m. The optimal choice of surrounding rock grade was I and II, followed by grades III, IV, and V. The optimal choice of in situ stress state was σH > σh > σv, followed by σH > σv > σh and σv > σH > σh. The sensitivity of the stability evaluation parameters was ranked in descending order as follows: buried depth, surrounding rock grade, and in situ stress state. When the surrounding rock permeability was less than 1 × 10− 14m2, the 24-h air leakage rate of the roadway was less than 1%. The suitable range of surrounding rock permeability was less than 1 × 10− 14m2.

Many methods for the determination of gold or silver, or both, in cyanide solutions have been published, which with care in manipulation, and modification in some cases, will give results that are satisfactory. It is possible to classify or group these methods as follows: 1. Evaporating the solution in a porcelain or agate-ware dish containing litharge,l or in a "boat" made of lead foil. 2. Forming a lead sponge containing the precious metals by means of zinc shavings,2 zinc dust,3 or a piece of aluminum.4 3. Decomposing the cyanide solution with an acid and precipitating the precious metals by the use of one or a combination of some of the following: Copper sulphate,5 sodium sulphite,6 hydrogen sulphide,' cement copper.ll 4. The penetration characteristics of a horizontal plate elutriator and of a 10-mm nylon cyclone were evaluated. The test aerosols were polydisperse coal-dust particles ranging from less than 0.3 to 15 micrometers in diameter. Particle densities ranged from 1.3 to 1.4 grams per cubic centimeter. Equivalent Stokes diameters were measured using Coulter counter analytical techniques. Experimental results indicate that the penetration characteristics of the horizontal plate elutriator closely approximate the sampling efficiency curve defining the respirable fraction of the dust cloud recommended and adopted by the Johannesburg Pneumoconiosis Conference in 1959. Penetration characteris-tics of the 10-mm cyclone were evaluated at flow rates of 1.4, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5, and 2.8 liters of air per minute. The data indicate that the penetration curve obtained at 2.0 liters per minute most closely approximates the sampling efficiency curve for respirable dust recommended at a meeting sponsored by the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission in 1961.

The aim of the research was to study the thermodynamic characteristics of high-temperature processing of ilmenite concentrate deposits "Central" in a neutral and oxidizing atmosphere, as well as its interaction with alkaline additives. The research was conducted using a scanning colonoscopy on thermogravimetrical analyzer NETZSCH STA 449 F3. A sample of the test material weighing 10 mg was placed in a crucible and heated at a rate of 10 °C/min to 1200 °C in argon or air. Studies have been conducted pure ilmenite concentrate and its mixtures with 5 % and 12.5% of sodium carbonate. The results of the analysis of the thermogravimetric curves it was found that the recovery of the concentrate carbon will come from ulvospinel, not pseudobrookite, and the reaction recovery is possible at temperatures above 900°C. While removing produced in the decay ilmenorutile of iron oxides in an inactive form, for example, iron (III) oxide, it is possible to reduce the quantity of the solution of ilmenite formed during the restoration of the melt anosovite. The analysis of data obtained during heating of ilmenite concentrate with sodium carbonate in concentrations of 5 and 12.5% transition pseudobrookite in ulvospinel is missing, it just breaks down into hematite and titanium oxide, which, in turn, react with N?2??3. It should be noted that increasing the concentration of sodium carbonate in the sample contributes to more complete interaction of iron oxides and N?2??3 with formation of ferrites of sodium. This can ensure full recovery of iron oxides in the concentrate, which is part of secondary ilmenite can not be dissolved in the melt formed by the lower oxides of titanium. In addition, the increase in the content of soda in the mixture significantly reduces the temperature of the initial melting point of the slag and facilitates the coagulation of metallic iron.The obtained results were used for laboratory studies of the solid-phase sintering of briquettes from ilmenite concentrate with additives of sodium carbonate and a reducing – coal, as well as for the development of technological mode of solid-phase sintering of the concentrate with the aim of obtaining product recovery with a titanium dioxide content of more than 75 %.
