I. 2965) the authors gave references to articles covering (1) the effect of temperature on the equilibrium 2C0 - CO2 + C, (2) experimental work that has been done on learning the gases existing at various elevations in columns of burning coke, (3) extension of this work to the tuyere zone of an iron blast furnace, and (4) the paper itself gave similar analyses of the gaseous oxides of carbon at the tuyere zone of a lead blast furnace and showed the temperatures obtaining there. There were also references in the above paper to the literature on (5) how the lead compounds likely to be present might be ex¬pected to react. A careful study of the original articles selected as references will give a good background for the present work.The following very brief recapitulation may be convenient before considering the tuyere zone in the blast furnaces at Kellogg. The ""producer gas reaction"" (1) of course goes to the left at increasingly higher rates of speed with increase of temperature. When air is blown upward through a grate and a column of hot fine coke alone, oxygen as such penetrates from some 2 to 3 inches only, under the conditions obtaining as to the amount of surface exposed per unit volume of air. When air is blown at about 20 pounds pressure through the tuyeres in the side of an iron blast furnace into a column of coarse coke (plus furnace charge) it may penetrate for 30 inches before the oxygen is entirely used, burning first largely to CO2. Within wide limits, the rate of feeding air into the furnace has practically little effect on the composition of the gases obtaining in the fuel bed of fine coke, this being true particularly of the gases leaving the bed. Some 10.5 inches above the grate the gases contained 22 per cent of CO by volume, and a little further up the CO2 had practically disappeared. This gave the familiar three zones in both the iron blast furnace and the gas producer; in order of entry of the air, in the first the oxygen burned largely to CO2, in the second the CO2 was reduced to CO, and the third the CO2 was practically absent. In the furnaces at Tooele, conditions were somewhat erratic but the first two zones were present, there being, however, no zone in which CO2 and 02 were both entirely absent."

Este trabalho apresenta um estudo sobre a influência de diferentes ciclos de tratamentos térmicos sobre a microestrutura e propriedades mecânicas de dois aços (A e B) especificados pela norma API 5CT. O aço B tem um conteúdo de elementos de liga maior que o aço A. Caracterizou-se de forma qualitativa e quantitativa as microestruturas por meio de microscopia óptica e eletrônica de varredura. As propriedades mecânicas foram medidas por meio do ensaio de tração. As amostras do aço A submetidas ao resfriamento ao ar calmo e forçado apresentaram uma maior fração volumétrica do constituinte MA (martensita/austenita retida) em relação ao aço B e o aumento da taxa de resfriamento aumentou a quantidade de MA para os dois aços, o que resultou em um aumento no limite de resistência a tração para os aços A e B. As amostras que foram resfriadas ao ar calmo e ao ar forçado apresentaram menores limites de escoamento que as amostras temperadas e revenidas. Este resultado pode ser explicado pela presença de bainita e do constituinte MA nas amostras resfriadas ao ar calmo e ao ar forçado cuja presença gera uma maior densidade de discordâncias.

Extraction of gold and other metals from ores suspended in liquid slurries often involves gases (such as oxygen) as a participant in the reaction. An important factor then in setting the rate of extraction can be mass transfer of the gas into the liquid and/or solids. A number of recent studies have indicated that as solids loadings increase, mass transfer rates of gas into solid-liquid mixtures decreases. This would seem to imply that lower solids loadings would be beneficial to increased reaction rates. However, since it is the solids which are being reacted, a most intriguing paradox is created. More solids should lead to more surface area to react, but it seemingly also provides less gas to react. So is the reaction faster or slower as solids loadings increases? The creation of this paradox is imbedded in how mass transfer and reaction data is collected and measured, how it is analyzed and correlated, and finally on the rate controlling steps in the reaction. An alternative analysis of these studies is presented which clarifies and eliminates the paradox. The analysis applies to water slurries as used in gold or other metal leaching processes or in bio-hydrometallurgy, as well as to molten metal/solid/gas mixtures such as might be encountered in submerged gas injection.

For the purpose of procuring data that could be used in estimating the value of the briquetting process as applied to American fuels, the United States Geological Survey, in cooperation with other interests, began in 1904, at the Louisiana Purchase Exposition, certain experiments involving the production and use of bituminous-coal briquets. It installed at St. Louis, and later at Norfolk, machines for the manufacture of such briquets, and the output of these machines has been tested in locomotive service on several different railroads in comparison with natural fuels. An elaborate and carefully executed series of tests involving the use of natural coals and of briquets made from the same coal, previously crushed, was carried out on a locomotive mounted at the testing plant of the Pennsylvania Railroad Company at Altoona, Pa.; and some preliminary experiments involving the use of briquets in marine service were made in connection with one of the Government's torpedo boats. A description of these tests is presented herewith. The results sustain the following general conelusions: 1. The briquets made on the Government's machines have well withstood exposure to the weather. and have suffered but little deterioration from handling. 2. In all classes of service involved by the experiments, the use of briquets in the place of natural coal appears to have increased the evaporative efficiency of the boilers tested. 3. The smoke produced has in no test been more dense with the briquets than with coal; on the contrary, in most tests the smoke density is said to have been less when briquets were used. 4. The use of briquets increases the facility with which an even fire over the whole area of the grate may be maintained.

Laboratory testing was completed to determine the effectiveness of a fiberglass cable bolt (FCB) as a cuttable rock support for a continuous, hard-rock mining method. The FCB consists of four Polystal tendons combined in a node/antinode fashion, with polyvinyl chloride (PVC) spacers forming the anti-nodes. The largest ultimate pull-out load achieved by the FCB was 22 t (48,400 lb) at 89% of the tendons' theoretical pullout load. This premature tendon failure is accredited to: • differential stresses within the tendons and • differential tendon displacement. An increase in pull-out resistance for a given embedment length is due to: • increased bond area, • reduced interfacial shear and • "wedge" effect. The critical embedment length was found to be 40% less than for conventional steel cable bolts (SCB) at a 127-mm (5-in.) node spacing. An FCB can have up to a 92% increase in load-carrying capacity over a conventional SCB at equal embedment lengths. The load carrying capacity is equivalent to SCB at a 960-mm (37.8-in.) embedment length. Though the FCB is 7.5% more expensive than the conventional SCB (installed), this cost may be offset by increased performance. FCBs are a potentially viable support alternative for continuous hard-rock mining.

Interaction of sulfide minerals and native metals I with reagents in flotation is largely determined by particle-surface changes resulting from action of the medium and dissolved gases. A number of early studies were devoted to the selective action of various gases on minerals.' Mc-Lachlan' paid attention to oxygen as the most active gas affecting flotation properties of sulfide minerals. Opposing views were expressed concerning the influence of sulfide oxidation on xanthate flotation: Taggart3 recognized the positive influence of oxygen, and I. W. Wark4 rejected it. Shvedovh ffered the hypothesis of partial oxidation. As to the influence of such gases as hydrogen" and carbon dioxide on mineral floatability, opinions also differed. Anisotropy is a characteristic of intact foliated metamorphic rocks (slates, gneisses, phyllites, schists). ?esting was used to establish the anisotropic behaviour of selected gneissic rocks. The effect of anisotropy on various mechanical properties (strength, deformation) and dynamic properties (wave velocity) was examined. The rock samples were also tested at successively higher confining pressures in order to evaluate the effect of anisotropic behaviour at high overburden pressures. L’ anisotropie characterise les roches foliées (schistes, gneiss, phyllades). Dans ce travail des essais en laboratoire ont été exécutés afin de déterminer le comportement anisotropique des roches gneissiques. L’ effet de l’anisotropie a été examiné par rapport aux propriétés méchaniques (résistance, deformation) et propriétés dynamiques (vélocité ultrasonique). En outre des essais des roches ont été exécutés a des compressions latérales successivement plus grandes afin de déterminer le comportement des roches sous grands charges. Anisotropie ist eine Eigenschaft der geschieferten Gesteine (TonSchiefer, Gneis, Phyllit, Marmor). Versuche wurden durchgeführt, um anisotrope Verhalten von gneis Gesteinen zu ermitteln. Der Einfluss von Anisotropie auf mechanische (Festigkeit, Dehnung) und dynamische Eigenschaften (Wellegeschwindigkeit) wurde bestimmt. Die Dreiaxialversuche wurden unter grossem allseitigen Drücken entnommen, um das anisotrope Verhalten auf grösse herrschende Spannung zu bestimmen.

Producers of alloy steels recognize the importance of chemical composition in relation to the hot-working properties and the typical surface defects found in their product. Each analysis of steel has its own peculiar characteristics. Under conditions of standard mill practice each analysis is susceptible to certain types of defects. Mill practice must be varied to obtain the best combination of surface and internal quality in the product. Chemical composition influences the cast structure and crystallization characteristics of the ingot. It also determines the rate of heating and cooling, the plastic hot-working range, and the phase structure of the steel at various temperatures. as well as the tendency toward scale formation and decarburization. This paper endeavors to emphasize the manner in which chemical composition affects the various properties of steel, and to indicate the relative importance of these factors in relation to the hot-working properties and surface characteristics of killed steel. The influence of chemical composition may be outlined as follows: I. Effect on the cast structure of steel, including: A. State of deoxidation, and type of inclusions. B. Gas content of steel. C. Freezing point and melting point of steel. D. Crystallization characteristics and segregation. 11. Effect on the hot-working properties and surface characteristics of steel, including: A. Plastic hot-working range. B. Phase structures at hot-working temperatures. C. Rate of heating. D. Cooling characteristics. E. Scale formation. F. Surface decarburization. EFferect of Chemical Composition on Cast Structure of Steel State of Deoxidation and Type of Inclu-sions.—The state of deoxidation is limited by the final chemical analysis desired in the finished product, and is controlled primarily by carbon, manganese, silicon, and aluminum, and to a lesser degree by chromium, titanium, vanadium, or other deoxidizing elements. The degree of deoxidation affects the density of the cast structure and broadly classifies the steel as killed, semikilled, or rimming. This in turn manifests itself in surface characteristics. The manner and extent of deoxidation also controls the amount, type, and distribution of nonmetallic inclusions formed. The equilibrium of manganese, silicon and aluminum with the slags and pouring refractories with which the metal comes in contact is important, especially in regard to inclusions of fire-clay origin. Some surface Seams and hot-working difficulties can be traced to nonmetallic inclusions.

"This paper compares several distinct types of mineral deposits associated with different families of granitoid rocks in the New Brunswick Appalachians. Porphyry copper deposit s are associated with late-stage differentiates of Lower to Middle Devonian I-type igneous complexes. Contact metasomatic deposits were formed where these plutons intrude carbonate rocks and they gave rise to vein deposits in fracture zones near wrench faults. The I-type granitoids were emplaced mainly in areas of thin continental crust and locally along prominent faults in areas of thick continental crust.In contrast, tin-tungsten-molybdenum-bearing greisen deposits and skarns, and antimony-bearing quartz veins are associated with predominantly S-stype granitoid complexes ranging in age from Middle Devonian to early Carboniferous. The mineral deposits occur within or along the contacts of very fractionated (specialized) late phases of these intrusive complexes, which are characterized by high K2O/Na2O, Rb/Sr and Rb/Ba, and low Fe, Mg, Zr and Ti contents. These specialized granitoids are in a large wrench fault zone that cuts across thick continental crust in southwestern and central New Brunswick.IntroductionA great variety of igneous intrusions and subvolcanic stocks were emplaced in the New Brunswick Appalachians during the latter stages of and immediately after the Acadian Orogeny (late Lower to Middle Devonian) and during the subsequent Hercynian Orogeny (Carboniferous). The presence or absence and characteristics of mineral deposits associated with these intrusions reflect the level of intrusion, the composition of the associated igneous rocks and the composition of the invaded sequences.Nickel-copper sulphide deposits occur in mafic intrusions in the St. Stephen area of the southwestern Magaguadavic - St. Croix Zone and in the Goodwin Lake area of the northeastern Mirarnichi Zone. Contact metasomatic and vein-type copper-rich base metal sulphide deposits and porphyry copper deposits with or without molybdenum are related mainly to high-level granitoid stocks of intermediate composition in the Matapedia-Tobique and northwest Miramichi zones. Tintungsten - molybdenum deposits with or without base metal sulphide minerals and antimony-uranium deposits are mainly associated with Upper Devonian and Lower Carboniferous biotite-muscovite granites and related 'subvolcanic intrusions that occur in an arc-shaped belt extending from the southwestern Magagaudavic - St. Croix Zone into the central Mirarnichi Zone."

(communication to the Secretary*).-In going over this report, which I have done very carefully, I find that the summary as composed deals with the various problems almost entirely from the employer's standpoint and that practically no consideration is given to the employee's point of view. An experience of 3 ½ years as safety inspector, and almost 30 years as workman-and official, has convinced me that any plan for the betterment of working conditions which will achieve any degree of success must give the workmen their share of responsibility and allow them full participation. The company may finance and direct the movement, but its ultimate success depends upon the support given by the workmen. The cooperation of the men doing the actual work is so essential that all writers insist that this must he secured, but they do not agree as to how this can best be done.

By authority of the Federal Coal-Mine Inspection Act of May 7, 1941, Public Law 49--77th Congress, H.R. 2082,2/ a Coal-Mine Inspection Division was established in the Health and Safety Branch of the Bureau of Mines. Funds totaling $729,000 for the operation of the division and for other incidental expenses were provided in an amendment to the Department of the Interior appropriation bill for the fiscal year 1942 (H.R. 4590). A small. percentage of these funds was made available on July 1, 1941, and a much greater proportion on October 1, 1941, to defray the expenses of the coal-mine inspection work and incidental activities for the remainder of the fiscal year 1942. The Coal-Mine Inspection Division is charged with administering the act and is required to compile, analyze, publish, and otherwise make available for public inspection the information obtained under it and to transmit such information to the Director of the Census. The act requires also that the information obtained be reported to Congress, with such findings and comments thereon and such recommendations for legislative action as may be deemed proper.

In this chapter, the principles that determine the procedures selected to transform minerals in the ground into usable commodities are re¬viewed.a I argue here that straightforward mod¬ification of the modern general economic theory of production suffices to meet the practical needs of a mineral economist. Therefore, the chapter is largely a review of the general economic theory of production to which is added discussion of the special prob¬lems of the exhaustibility of mineral resources and the economics of finding and developing economically recoverable minerals. In many cases, propositions applicable to all industries are reviewed because they are not treated ade¬quately in prior texts. In the discussion, use is frequently made of basic concepts of differential calculus widely used in economics. However, this is supple¬mented by simpler verbal and graphical treat¬ments, so that those either untrained in the calculus or, as is often the case, whose skills have grown rusty, can still follow the discus¬sion. Where the argument depends critically on the mathematics, this is noted and the justifi¬cation for including the material is provided. In addition, an appendix outlines the critical mathematics and reviews some of the numerous books published that provide the most readable available introduction to the subject. Further¬more, mineral industries examples are used to suggest the relevance of the theory. THE RELEVANCE OF THE ECONOMICS OF PRODUCTION Three basic steps are involved in establishing the relevance of economic analysis to mineral ¬industries decision making. First, the general theory of production must be defined, and its relationship to the simpler models of production stressed in economics textbooks must be noted. Second, the critical modification-considera¬tion of the problems of discovering and devel¬oping mineral deposits-must be developed. It turns out this too involves a special case of the general theory of production. Third, the concept of an economics of exhaustible resources must be explored sufficiently to suggest why its practical relevance is doubtful (or at least far smaller than the numerous writers on the subject seem to believe). The present approach is heavily influenced by post-1945 developments in economic anal¬ysis. Particularly since World War II, economic theory has drastically changed its scope. First, stress has increased greatly upon viewing the economy as a network of intertwined markets known technically as the general equilibrium system.b In this view, not only is the economy viewed as an integrated system, but critical con¬cepts are viewed somewhat differently than was previously fashionable. Ignition is the start point of the sintering circuit, which plays an important role during the whole sintering process. The gas consumption accounts for 80% energy cost in the sintering ignition process. Therefore, gas flow reduction is of great significance to energy conservation in the sintering ignition process. In current study, the concept of comprehensive ignition intensity (CII) was introduced to determine the ignition effect. The experimental results indicate that the value of CII increases with higher air-fuel ratio at gas flow of 550 and 600 Nm3/h. From another point of view, given constant CII value, lower gas flow can be achieved with higher air-fuel ratio. Based on the comprehensive ignition intensity, the ignition parameters were optimized and the gas flow was subsequently reduced. By increasing the air-fuel from 5.5 to 6.6, the gas flow is reduced from 450 Nm3/h (8.1 GJ/h) to around 350 Nm3/h (6.3 GJ/h).

The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory tests to determine the effects on the physical properties of coarse coal waste of adding large amounts of fine coal waste. Maximum laboratory dry density, optimum moisture content, shear strength, and permeability tests were conducted on samples that contained 18 to 60 pct minus No.4 (U.S. Standard sieve size) coal waste. For the nonslaky materials, maximum laboratory densities were highest and permeabilities lowest when the samples contained between 30 and 40 pct minus No.4. Shear strength increased rapidly when the proportion of minus No. 4 was increased from 20 to 40 pct, but then increased only slightly or leveled off when the minus No. 4 was increased to 60 pct. Optimum moisture content and permeability were the physical properties most affected by the addition of fines. Optimum moisture content increased as much as 3 pct, and permeabilities decreased up to three orders of magnitude. Slaky coal waste material had physical property reactions to the addition of fines substantially different from those of nonslaky material.

A major portion of these studies makes use of the MOS capacitance-z)oltage method of' analysis. The particular areas of investigation which are reported include: 1) a general survey of the electvical properties of thermally oxidized silicon surjbccs; 2) a study of ion migration through silicon dioxide films ; 3) measurements of electron and hole mobilities in surface inversion layers; 4) a study of impurity redistribution due to thermal o.ridatiotz; and 5) measurements of the rates of oxidation oj-heavily doper7. silicon. THE importance of the metal-oxide-semiconductor (MOS) system in the semiconductor industry is well-known. In addition to its importance in the "planar" device technology,' the MOS structure is now also used in the fabrication of active solid-state devices. Consequently, extensive efforts have been made recently to obtain a better understanding of the characteristics of this system. A summary of some studies of the MOS system conducted in our laboratories during the past year is presented. For the most part these studies used silicon as the semiconductor, along with silicon dioxide and aluminum as the other two components of the system. Since the MOS capacitance-voltage method of analysis was used extensively in these studies, we will first briefly describe its nature and consider some of the possible causes of deviation of experimental observations from the simple theory. We will then outline the various related areas of investigation carried out in our laboratories and will briefly indicate some of the results. It should be noted that the purpose of this paper is merely to provide a brief summary of MOS studies. More detailed discussions of the various areas of investigation are given in the references cited. PRINCIPLES OF THE MOS C-V METHOD OF ANALYSIS' A sketch of the MOS structure is shown in the upper portion of Fig. 1. In this case the insulating film is Si02 and the semiconductor p-type silicon. If a large negative bias is applied to the metal field plate, holes are attracted to the silicon surface. The silicon then behaves much like a metal and the capacitance measured is that of the oxide layer alone, Co. If a small positive bias is applied to the aluminum, holes are repelled and a region depleted of majority carriers is formed at the silicon surface. This depletion I-egion adds to the width of the dielectric and the measured capacitance begins to drop. With increasing positive bias, the width of the electrical depletion region increases. At some large positive bias an inzevsion regiotr is formed at the surface and additional charges induced in the silicon appear in the form of electrons in this narrow inversion region. Thus the depletion-region width approaches a maximum value and, consequently, the capacitance reaches a minimum value and then either levels off or rises again depending on the measurement frequency and the rate of equilibration of the minority carriers in the inversion layer.3 Band diagrams, along with the corresponding charge distributions, are shown in Fig. 1 for the above bias conditions. If minority carriers cannot accumulate at the surface to form an inversion region, the depletion-region width continues to increase with increased positive bias and the capacitance drops toward zero as in a reverse biased p-n junction. The effect of a work-function difference $hs between the metal and the silicon, and of surface charges per unit area Qss located at the oxide-silicon interface, is simply to attract charges in the silicon much like the applied bias. It can be shown that this results in a parallel shift of the capacitance-voltage characteristic along the voltage axis by an amount corresponding to AV = -$bIs + Qss/Co. Theoretical curves have been calculated4 giving the capacitance of the MOS structure C normalized to the oxide capacitance Co vs the quantity VG here VG is the voltage applied to the metal field plate. In Fig. 2 such calculations are shown as points for a particular oxide thickness and bulk impurity concentration for a p-type semiconductor. (For an n-type semiconductor the curves would be mirror images of these.) All three cases, i.e., low frequency. high frequency, and depletion, are indicated. Also shown in the figure are recorder tracings of the characteristics of actual devices. These characteristics have been shifted along the voltage axis to compensate the effect of surface charges and work-function difference.
