"The effects of mixed collectors on some physicochemical parameters (thin film lifetime, kinetics of expansion of the three-phase contact, equilibrium three-phase contact angle and surface tension) involved in the elementary act of flotation were investigated experimentally.We have used the microscopic thin balance developed by Scheludko et al (1970) to study the stability and interactions within the thin film between the silica surface and air bubble with (i) a long chain C10 amine and (ii) a cationic/anionic surfactant systems consisting of mixtures of a long straight C10 chain amine with long straight chain C8, C10 and C12 sulfonates at 1:1 molar ratio. The experiments were performed at a range of concentrations at pH 6.5. The equilibrium contact angle was measured with a microscope technique using the modified Mingins-Sheludko method (Mingins and Scheludko, 1979). The surface tension was measured by the method of Wilhelmy (Adamson, 1960). It was found that the mixed surfactants caused lower contact angles, lower rates of the thin film rupture and longer film lifetime, compared to the pure amine system."

No processo de produção de aço o maior volume de custo está na carga metálica, que é composta pelo gusa líquido produzido nos altos fornos e a sucata metálica oriunda dos descartes de processos produtivos da indústria. Visando atingir o custo ótimo de produção, foi definida uma produção dos altos fornos menor que a média histórica da empresa, e a compra de placas no mercado como complemento para suprir a demanda da laminação. Desta forma a otimização da utilização do gusa líquido se tornou primordial para o aumento da produção de placas, redução do custo de produção da metalurgia e consequentemente redução da necessidade de compras de placas no mercado. Com este novo cenário foi necessário aumentar a utilização de sucata pesada e reduzir o tempo de preparação de caixas para garantir a carga no peso e tempo necessário para atendimento dos conversores. As ações tomadas possibilitaram a redução do gusa na carga metálica de 84% para 82% atingido o resultado proposto redução de custo e aumento de produção de placas.

The use of nitrogen in molybdenite flotation circuits is a relatively new concept utilized by only a few mines around the world. This paper briefly discusses circuit chemistry and the reason for its success. It follows the entire testing process which resulted in a sodium hydro-sulphide dosage reduction from 18.5 to 4.4 lbs/ ton (9250 to 2200 g/t) through to the final installation of an inert gas generator which will produce reagent savings in excess of one million dollars annually. A description of the various types of nitrogen generators commercially available is included.

EVIDENCE has been accumulating in recent years, in part from the work of the Coal Research Laboratory, that coals belong to a family of natural polymers and that even in complex reactions the differences between coals are quantitative and not qualitative. This point of view leads to the expectation that if a series of coals were subjected to a closely controlled set of experimental conditions the results obtained should be related to the chemical analyses of the individual coals. The data accumulated over the past 10 years by the Bureau of Mines in its "Survey of Coke-, Gas-, and By-Product-Making Properties of American Coals," in what has come to be recognized as the Bureau of Mines-American Gas Association (BM-AGA) carbonization assay test,1-12 offer an unusual opportunity to check this conclusion. The present paper reports an analysis of the data on the first go coals and coal blends-including coals numbered I to 55b, inclusive -which have been carbonized according to a standard procedure at intervals of 100°C. from 500° to 1100° in either or both 13 or I8-in. cylindrical retorts." In Table I are given the name of the seam from which the sample was obtained, the analytical data used, and the reference to the original publication of the Bureau of Mines. The coals range in fixed carbon from 46.2 to 79.0 per cent, in volatile matter from 15.4 to 41.3 per cent, in ash; from 2.1 to 15.9 per cent, in moisture from o.8 to 19.7 per cent, and in total sulphur from 0.40 to 4.44 per cent; therefore the entire gamut of bituminous coals is represented. The petrographic nature of the individual coals is not considered in the following analysis, although both "normal" bright coals and splint coals are included in the samples studied. For information on the petrography of the coals and for further information characterizing the coals the original papers should be consulted. Although the coals that are included extend over the whole range of bituminous coals, they do not cover this range entirely adequately. In particular, only 13 of the go coals have moisture contents greater than 3 per cent. This concentration at low moisture values means that the effect of moisture, which is an important factor, cannot be determined with as much certainty as would be desirable. All the coals were not tested at every temperature and in both retort sizes. Only the first 30 coals were tested at 1100°, and only about 50 at the other temperatures, except at 900°, where nearly all of them were included. In the accompanying tables the actual number of observations entering into each correlation is given. In this study equations are given for calculating analyses, yields, and properties of coke and by-products from the coal analyses. To decide whether these equations are satisfactory it is necessary to know the accuracy with which these quantities were measured in the assay tests.

The single six-in-line furnace of the Polokwane Smelter is the largest installed high-intensity furnace for platinum group metals (PGM) base metals sulphide smelting in the world. Nanosize model gold particles with varying size were fabricated by deposition of a 10 nm thick gold film onto SiO2/Si(100) substrate by electron beam evaporation followed by modification using low energy Ar+ ion bombardment. The change in particle size were monitored by the Au 5d valence band states determined by ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS). The gold/iron oxide interface was studied by iron oxide deposition on gold. It was found that the energy profile of Au 5d valence band states are strongly redistributed with decreasing the gold particle size mostly affecting at the lowest and at the highest binding energies. The size effect in the UPS spectra can be interpreted by the energy redistribution rather, than by narrowing the 5d states. The iron oxide deposition increases the catalytic activity in CO oxidation whether it is on gold nanoparticles or on a continuous 80 nm thick gold film. The activity enhancement is significantly larger in case of gold nanoparticles. The interface interaction is operative in enlargement of the catalytic activity even if gold particles are not exposed to the surface, but they are located below the iron oxide layer.

OPPORTUNITY to pay tribute to the memory of Professor Henry Marion Howe is a strenuous assignment as well as an honor. Upon recalling Howe lecturers and lectures of the past 25 years, glancing over the list of those earlier, and rereading Howe's books, I arrive at several conclusions: 1—Many lecturers either worked under or knew Professor Howe. 2—It is virtually impossible to pick a subject on which Professor Howe did not touch. 3—There is precedent for a technical paper based upon pursuit of a single subject. 4—There have been listening lectures and reading lectures. There is solid comfort only in 2: the subject field is wide open. I did not know, nor even ever saw, Professor Howe, so can supply no fitting reminiscence. As a college student I was dimly aware that he counted among the giants. Fuller appreciation of his stature came with reading his books and papers, growing acquaintance with some of his associates, and the intrinsic dignity of the climax of the Annual Meeting, beginning at four o'clock of a Thursday afternoon in the auditorium of the Engineering Societies Building in New York. As for producing the technical paper sort of thing, it is my lot to have reached an age and assignment such that to do so would be to filch information from those who did the work and whose story is theirs to tell; for this I have no enthusiasm. As for the final conclusion, Professor Howe was one of the chosen few so highly expert at expository writing that he could produce a lecture or paper that reads as though it would also have listened well. One of his tricks was the free use of words not ordinarily part of the technical vocabulary, provided that such words were likely to communicate most precisely what he had in mind. How wonderful it would be for all who must read reports by the ton if ability at exposition could be taught with the effectiveness open, say to, differential calculus! Perhaps Professor Howe should be required college reading even if for no other reason than to prove that technical writing need be neither dull nor diffuse. My assignment is clearly still strenuous. Another point to consider is the fact that metallurgy is now so tremendously diversified that hope of finding a topic of universal appeal is negligible, even if one were competent enough to be permitted free choice. That which follows is, therefore, a compromise composed of necessity and of the obligation to attempt to avoid boring to slumber those of you who are not especially interested in the general subject chosen. The Iron and Steel Div. is now essentially a process metallurgy division, heavily concerned with the smelting of iron and the making of steel. The American Iron and Steel Inst. figure for present steel capacity of this country is 125,828,310 net tons; how this is divided among processes is indicated by the production totals for 1953, shown in Table I. The glamor girls and boys make the front page and so it is with steelmaking processes. If there is an Antarctic Daily Bugle, it undoubtedly has carried stories of revolutionary development, such as oxygen processes and vacuum melting, and stories of the incomparably rosy destiny of electric arc melting. All such certainly have their place and their future; meanwhile, it is the sturdy and old reliable open hearth that accounts for the bulk of production reported back on the financial page, and it is the old reliable that is most likely to continue to account for the bulk for some perfectly sound raw material, technologic, and economic reasons. This, plus the fact that next year marks a centennial (for it was in 1856 that Frederick and William Siemens conceived the regenerative open hearth), is reason enough to talk about open hearth furnaces, but is not the real one. The real reason is that in some years of association with open hearths, I have accumulated—in addition to a genuine liking and respect for them—certain odds and ends of fact and fancy that this lecture provides a unique chance

A study has been made of wet, autogenous grinding of disseminated copper ores, including testing of a large number of samples from. Kennecott Copper Corp.'s Chino mine. The grindability of the various samples was found to vary over an extremely wide range, even among samples taken from diflerent locations within the same ore body. These variations in grindability can be qualitatively correlated with the composition of the rock and the fracturing and alteration that had occurred. Because of the large-scale nonhomogeneity of disseminated copper ore bodies, extensive and careful testing of autogenous grinding is needed. An accurate correlation of the grinding data from various samples with the geology of the ore body and with mining plans will indicate if variations in grinding mill throughput can be avoided in practice by mixing or blending of mill feed and if, therefore, autogenous grinding can be applied successfully. In the past 15 years, comminution by primary autogenous grinding has been investigated and applied economically in the minerals industry, particularly in iron-ore processing. Successful application of primary grinding is described by A. A. Dor,l.' P. B. Dettmer,334 R. R. Turner, and W. F. McDermott." other authors describing the advantages of primary grinding include H. Hardinge,' R. T. Hukki,' D. S. Coyle" and F. C. Bond,"," to mention only a few. For the past several years, Kennecott Copper Corp.'s Metal Mining Div. Research Center has been investigating primary grinding of disseminated copper ores. Both fully autogenous and semi-autogenous grinding has been explored. Ores from three of Kennecott's western operating properties and from several development properties have been tested. Host rocks include diabase, schist, silicated and argillaceous limestones, shale, granite porphyry, quartzite, and granodiorite. The object of this paper is to supplement the general knowledge in the field of primary grinding by presenting information gained from the studies with the various disseminated copper ores. Data are presented which show that carefully considered test programs are required to determine the practicality of applying autogenous grinding to a specific mining-beneficiation operation. Particularly this is so if more than one rock type occurs within an ore body or if there are wide variations in the degree of rock alteration within a deposit. Extensive sampling and subsequent testing of the ores within a mine are required if serious pitfalls are to be avoided and good engineering data acquired. We hope that this presentation will stimulate studies to increase the understanding of the fracturing process applicable to large pieces of rock, a factor which is important in autogenous grinding. Test Facilities and Procedures Both pilot-scale and full-scale test facilities were used to investigate primary grinding characteristics of the disseminated copper ores. A 6-ft Hardinge Cascade mill, a 24-ft Hardinge Cascade mill, and a 5-ft Aerofall mill were used in the studies. The Cascade mills were operated wet, while the Aerofall mill was operated both wet and dry. The Cascade mills were operated both for fully autogenous and for semi-autogenous grinding; the Aerofall mill was operated only semi-autogenously. Fully autogenous grinding, as the term is used in this presentation, is defined as the direct grinding of coarsely crushed rock by the action of the rock mass. Semi-autogenous grinding is defined as the grinding of coarsely crushed rock with the rock mass supplemented by a steel ball charge. Most of the test work was done using the 6-ft Cascade mill, operated under fully autogenous grinding conditions. Only limited testing was conducted with the 5-ft Aerofall mill and only one ore was tested using the 24-ft Cascade mill. This presentation is concerned, therefore, primarily with fully autogenous, pilot-scale grinding in the Cascade mill. Fig. 1 presents a diagram of the test facilities used with the 6-ft Cascade mill. Principal test equipment consists of a 6-ft Cascade mill, an 18-in. spiral classifier, an elevator, a 2 x 9-ft belt feeder, a conventional integrating kilowatt-hour meter, and a recording wattmeter. In testing, feed charges, adjusted as to weight, were deposited as evenly as possible on the belt feeder every 15 min. The weight of each charge was adjusted to maintain a mill charge of 27 to 30% of mill volume. The classifier was adjusted to obtain the desired size-consist of the final product, generally at 20% + 100 mesh. After equilibrium was established in the circuit, the feed, mill discharge, classifier sand, and classifier overflow were sampled and their size distributions determined. During the sampling periods, the power drawn by the mill was measured to determine the energy consumed in the reduction of the size consist of the ore solids. Fully Autogenous Pilot Grinding Tests on Various Kennecott Ores Typical test results obtained in the 6-ft Cascade mill with samples from Kennecott's Ray Mines Div., Chino Mines Div., Utah Copper Div., and a development property designated as Mine A are presented in Table 1. FINANCE The annual accounts, which follow this report, reflect a healthy position and show that measures taken by Council over the last few years to boost income have been successful. A higher income was needed not only to meet rising costs but also so that the services provided by the Institute for its members could be expanded. This year's income of R55 025 showed a further increase compared with last year's figure of R48 307. Income from subscriptions was higher mainly owing to an increased number of Company Affiliates, and this is indicative of the support given by mining and metallurgical companies to the good work being done by the Institute. Further sales of publications of the symposia held over the last few years again made a useful contribution to income of R4560. The first Winter School held in 1973 yielded a surplus of R7495 after the expenses had been deducted from the income received from registration fees. The cost of administering the Institute increased by R2212 compared with the previous year. Included in this was a donation of R1000 to the A.S. & T.S. Trust Fund. The cost of publishing and printing the Journal increased by R2034, but advertising and extraneous sales of the Journal were higher, with the result that the net cost of the

A FEW years ago, the writer encountered a, problem that, at first, seemed to be due to peculiar conditions affecting grain growth. Large cups made from heavy metal failed in the first drawing operation in the process of making seamless tubes. The metal, as cast, appeared to be sound and strong; it rolled successfully and withstood the first cupping operation, but on the first draw it failed, with a crystalline fracture. The failure appeared in the slightly worked part of the bottom of the cup, and microscopic examination revealed exceptionally large grains. Knowing the general conditions governing recrystallization of brass, which were later published by Matthewson and Phillips, an investigation was outlined with the idea of including various conditions under which new grains might form, and which would include the effect that a previous anneal might have upon the anneal following. These conditions were produced by annealing specimens of brass at five different temperatures, indenting them with a 10-inn. ball under four different pressures, and then reannealing at each of the five temperatures five specimens each of which had been annealed at one of the five temperatures.

"Niobium aluminides were directly synthesized by a sodiothermic reduction process of NbC15 - AlCb which was dispersed into LiCl - KCl - NaCl - CaCb melts. The melt supplied a homogenous reaction medium which was substantially beneficial to the co-reduction of Nb and Al to form niobium aluminides in situ. The reduction was performed at 500°C for 4 hours. The products were analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The corresponding results indicated that niobium aluminides powders were successfully synthesized.1. IntroductionNiobium aluminides have received considerable attention as high-temperature structural materials, due to their high melting points, relatively low density, high strength, excellent oxidation and creep resistance [1-4]. Figure 1 shows that there are three intermetallic compounds in the Nb - Al binary [5], which includes Nb3Al (A15 structure, Cr3Si type), Nb2Al (D8b structure, cr-CrFe type) and NbAb (D022 structure, TiAb type). These niobium aluminides have been used in turbine blades or in stationary gas turbines [6-8]. However, despite their attractive features, the ir applications are still limited by the long and costly fabrication process [9, 10].Niobium aluminides were industrially fabricated by the mechanically alloyed process [11-13]. Traditionally, niobium is extracted from Nb2O 5 or K2NbF7 by a metallothermic reduction process while aluminum is produced by the Hall-Heroult process of Ah03 electrolysis. Based on the extraction of Nb and Al, respectively, niobium aluminides is synthesized by a mechanical powder alloying process. The present process for making niobium aluminides requires a set of complicated equipment, has high production cost and time consuming [14, 15].The purpose of this work is to present the simple, economic and direct synthesis of niobium aluminides powders utilizing a sodiothermic reduction from NbC15 - Al Cb dispersed into molten salts."

Using solution calorimetry, the following heats of reaction were determined: (1) NaCN(c) + 1/Cu20(c) + 129H20(l) ? CuCN(c) + NaOH?128.5H2O ?H = -13.44±0.10 kcal/mole, (2) HCN(2) + NaOH?128.5H20 ? NaCN(c) + 129.5H20(l) ? = -2.52±0.02 kcal/mole. From these reactions, the heats of formation for CuCN(c) and HCN(2) were calculated to be 22.7±0.4 kcal/mole and 24.9±0.4 kcal/mole, respectively. Reaction 2 was made to check the consistency of literature values for heats of formation of HCN and NaCN. Adiabatic calorimetric measurements between 10° and 400° K showed the entropy and heat capacity of CuCN(c) to be 21.51±0.06 eu and 14.58±0.04 cal/mole deg, respectively, at 298° K. A broad anomaly in the heat capacity was found in the temperature range 285°-320° K. The heat of transition associated with this anomaly was less than 1 cal/mole, the sensitivity of the measurements.

En ese sentido, el presente texto señala una forma de tratamiento de drenaje de dicha faja a través del pretratamiento natural para oxidar y retirar fierro, así como del tratamiento pasivo DAS, denominado DAS-calizo, el cual se centra en la retención de metales trivalentes y el paso del sistema, llamado DAS-magnésico enfocado en la descontaminación de Zn, Mn, Cd, Co y Ni. PO. La aplicación del proyecto se realizará por LIFE-ETAD, -en tanto posibilita la viabilidad de un sistema pasivo para la descontaminación metálica en este tipo de aguas ácidas."

IN CONNECTION with a study of tungsten steels, Honda and Murakami1 reported an investigation of the system iron-tungsten. This report included a tentative equilibrium diagram, photomicrographs of various alloys in the series, and qualitative measurements of hardness and magnetic properties. The present investigation originally had as its object the study of the hardness and tensile properties of a series of carbon-free iron-tungsten alloys. But, as the work progressed it became evident that the system possessed other features of interest, so the scope of the investigation was enlarged. MATERIALS The iron powder used in preparing the alloys was obtained as follows: Iron oxalate was precipitated from a ferrous-sulfate solution by the addition of a solution of oxalic acid. This oxalate, after thorough washing, was ignited to iron oxide, which after reduction in hydrogen at about 1000° C. yielded iron powder containing but about 0.2 per cent. iron oxide and about 0.005 percent. carbon. Tungsten metal in the form of powder, such as is used in the manufacture of filaments for incandescent lamps, was the other constituent. This material analyzed 99.8 per cent. tungsten and contained no carbon, The metal powders, in the desired proportions, were mixed by tumbling and formed, under pressure of 20 tons per sq. in., into rods 3/8 by 3/8 by 10 in. To form the alloys without contamination, sections of the pressed rods were placed on alundum slabs and heated in an alundum tube wound with a tungsten resistor and packed in heat-insulating material. While the resistor was heated, a stream of hydrogen was continually passed through both the tube and the case containing it. The tungsten winding on the tube, as well as the material heated within the tube, was thus protected from oxidation. Such a furnace will operate constantly

THE physical properties of oil-producing sands, such as grain size, porosity, and permeability, are becoming more and more important in petroleum production engineering as oil fields are being repressured and rejuvenated. A number of excellent papers have been published recently on all three of these properties. Faucher, Lewis and Barnes1 give a com-plete survey of the work done through 1932 and contribute also much information on sands that they themselves have examined. Muskat and Botset,2 Wykoff, Botset, Muskat and Reed,3 Hurst,4 and Muskat5 have contributed a great deal to the theory and actual measurement of flow of liquids and gases through porous media. Muskat and Botset have measured the permeabilities of different sands with gases and liquids. They find that the radial is always slightly under the linear permeability. However, in most of the previous experiments small samples of the sand were used, and the method of production of fluid or gas through the sands has not been very close to actual oil-field conditions. In addition, so far as the authors are aware, no measurements of linear and radial permeabilities have been made simultaneously under exactly the same conditions. The multiple permeability apparatus described here is a part of the equipment being acquired by this laboratory for thorough investigation of the physical properties of producing sands. It possesses certain advantages for comparative studies of liquid flow. Additional data and descriptions of other instruments will follow in papers to be written later on. The essential features of the permeability apparatus are as follows:

O agitador eletromagnético no processo de lingotamento contínuo tem se mostrado útil na melhoria de qualidade das estruturas de solidificação, inibindo a formação de estruturas colunares, aumentando desta forma, a fração de estruturas equiaxiais, promovendo redistribuição de soluto e atenuações de defeitos através de movimentos induzidos no líquido pelo campo magnético. Baseado nas características do agitador eletromagnético do molde (M-EMS) de uma máquina de lingotamento de tarugos, foram realizadas simulações fluidodinâmicas (CFD) sob influência do campo eletromagnético, visando analisar o comportamento do escoamento e da temperatura. Um segundo objetivo foi avaliar o efeito do agitador sobre a trajetória das inclusões e como poderia promover a melhoria da qualidade subsuperficial das estruturas de solidificação. Foram testadas diferentes frequências e correntes de operação do M-EMS, bem como o posicionamento das válvulas submersas com diferentes configurações de furos de saída. Os resultados mostraram a percentagem de partículas sólidas removidas do domínio e a influência do agitador na extração de calor do molde, de forma a tornar mais homogênea a distribuição de temperatura durante o processo de solidificação.

Os aços inoxidáveis possuem características essenciais para um bom acabamento quando o que se busca é estética e boa resistência à oxidação. Quando se específica um aço inoxidável, o acabamento é um dos aspectos relevantes que devem ser considerados. O acabamento possui uma importante influência em algumas características do material como, por exemplo, na facilidade da limpeza e na resistência à oxidação / corrosão. Há uma grande variedade de acabamentos. Através de ensaios de oxidação a quente, medição de potencial eletroquímico, medição de dureza a baixa carga (microdureza) e medição da tensão residual via difração de raios x foi possível perceber uma diferença entre os acabamentos 2D, 2B, RO, BB, Nº4 e Nº6. A medição de tensão residual mostrou qualitativamente que o aumento de dureza e o forte amarelamento ocorrido no material com determinados acabamentos é função de uma deformação elástica na superfície imposta durante alguns dos processos de fabricação desses aços. Esse mecanismo é relevante e interfere na resistência a oxidação e corrosão nos casos estudados.

High-pu.1-ity molybdenum has been heat treated, melted, and zone refined and the physical and chemical changes that are produced by these processes have been studied by making resistance ratio measurements. Pronounced effects are observed that are associated with recrystalliza-tion at about 1200°C and with melting. Melting alone is found to result in a substantial purification by the evaporation of impurities such as iron. Zone refining is found to be reasonably effective with four passes producing a three-fold decrease in resistance ratio and a minimum ratio of 0.0003. With the aid of low temperature measurenzents, it has been shown that the build-up of a deposit of the material being zone refined on the radio frequency coil used for heating can lead to contamination of the sample. CONSIDERABLE interest in high-purity refractory metals for the study of mechanical properties has developed during recent years. Also the need for highly pure metals in certain fundamental studies, such as electronic band structure, has become quite widely appreciated. Molybdenum can now be produced with sufficiently high purity to make it attractive for such investigations. The most suitable measure of chemical purity of metals used for many of these studies is its resistance ratio, R,.,o,/Ro, During the purification of molybdenum by zone refining and its subsequent evaluation by this technique, a number of informative observations were made. These observations concern the effectiveness of zone refining, the volatilization of impurities at the melting point, and the recrystallization of molybdenum and appear to be pertinent to other refractory metals. Also, the usefulness of low-temperature resistance measurements as an analytical tool for evaluating the presence of chemical impurities and physical defects in metals is again illustrated. Samples of high-purity molybdenum of known mechanical history were heated to various temperatures between 800°c and their melting point. Resistance ratios of the samples were measured after they had been given a specified treatment. The data were used, along with mass spectrographic analysis, as an aid in interpreting the nature of the processes that occurred in conjunction with each treatment. Changes in the concentrations of chemical impurities and physical defects are typical of things that effect the low-temperature resistivity. SAMPLES The starting material was obtained from Westing-house Corp., Bloomfield, N.J. It was in the form of molybdenum rods, usually 1/8 or 3/16 in. in diameter. These had been previously processed from bars, 5/8 in, in diameter, originally reduced from 4 in. diam arc-cast ingots, by hot swaging at about 1300°c. In the final step, the temperature was lowered to about l lOO°C which resulted in the production of elongated grains. Typical grains were about 0.03 mm thick and 0.6 mm long. The molybdenum was quite pure as is indicated by the results of mass spectro-scopic analysis1 given in Column 2 of Table I. Other nongaseous elements not listed in the table were not detected. Statistics for the period 1926-1932 are given in Table 1. Domestic deposits arc known in many states, but the larger and purer ones are in the West, particularly in the desert region of southeastern California and western Arizona. These deposits are large enough to command interest, particularly in consideration of future cheap power at the Boulder Dam. The deposits described in this paper were examined during an investigation of the mineral resources of the Boulder Dam region by the United States Geological Survey for the United States Bureau of Reclamation in the spring of 1934. Mr. D. F. Hewett, who had general charge of the investigation, Mr. W. T. Schaller and Mr. M. I. Goldman contributed many helpful suggestions. Mr. N. H.
