Equilibrium H2S/H2 ratios were determined as functions of temperature (500o to 900°C) and composition in a hydrogen-circulation apparatus. Within the composition range studied there exists a two-phase region of "Zr3S4" and "ZrS2". The upper composition limit of this two-phase region is hounded by a disulfide phase and is practically constant over the temperature range investigated. The lower composition limit of this two-phase region is bounded a "Zr3S4 " phase and varies appreciably with tem- perature. The upper composition limit of the homogeneous region of the disulfide phase is not definitely determined, but it appears to he bounded by the stoichiometric composition of ZrS2. The lower composition limit of the homogeneous region of the Zr3S4 phase could not he determined due to the extremely low values of the equilibrium H2S/H2 ratios. Various thermodynamic quantities are evaluated from the data. PUBLISHED free-energy data for the Zr-S system are practically nonexistent. Strotzer, Biltz, and Meisel1 measured the sulfur pressures for the reaction 2ZrS2(s) + S2(g) = ZrS3(s) in the temperature range 783" to 874°C. The average heat of reaction calculated from the temperature dependence of the sulfur pressure is -47 keal. It should be noted, however, that according to these investigators, the two-phase region as determined by sulfur pressure constancy under isothermal conditions extended from approximately ZrS2, 3 to ZrS2.7. From consideration of X-ray data they concluded that the homogeneous regions of the disulfide and trisulfide phases are ZrS1.8-2.0 and ZrS2.8-3.2, respectively. Hahn and coworkers2 have made a structure study of the zirconium sulfide phases. They summarized the zirconium sulfide phases as follows: the compounds ZrS3 and ZrS2 with narrow homogeneous regions, a "Zr3S4" phase with a homogeneous region roughly within the limits of ZrSl.5 and ZrSo.9, the compounds ZrS and Zr4S3, and a "Zr3S2" phase with a homogeneous region within the limits ZrSo.8 and ZrSo.5. It is noted that the compounds ZrS and Zr4S3 are only formed in the gaseous state through sublimation of a phase which has the approximate composition of the compound. This paper describes the determination of the stability of the zirconium sulfide phases by a hydrogen-reduction method in which hydrogen is circulated over the heated sulfide until equilibrium is attained. Rössing Uranium Limited has operated since 1976 a large open pit uranium mine and extraction plant at a remote site in the Namib desert, South West Africa/Namibia. The geology (Berning, I., et al. Economy Geology) and the technical aspects concerning mining, grade control and metallurgy have previously been described (Rössing Uranium, Mining Magazin and Whyllie, R.J.M. "Rössing Uranium reaches rated production", World Mining). The improvement of leach 'extraction has been reported in 1984 (Kesler, S.B. et. al. "Uranium extraction at Rössing") and the installation of a central process control system has been described (Kesler, S.B. et al. "The introduction of a central process system at Rössing"). At the beginning of 1983 a decision was made to develop a computer system for metallurgical plant optimisation which included mass and volumetric balances, analytical assays for up to 5 chemical elements and the costs for the major consumables. Within 10 months this computer system was developed and implemented. A large number of test runs were made and computer studies were undertaken. The metallurgical division now has a scientific tool for production; planning for actual comparison with plant results and for strategic investigations and decision making.

ONE of the important problems in the design of structures and machine parts subjected to rapidly applied loads is the determination of the strength and ductility of the material itself under such conditions. Realizing the need for such information, many investigations have been carried out in the past. Most of these experiments have been made using notched bars in bending either with the Charpy or Izod impact machine. While yielding valuable data on the effect of notches in the energy absorption of the material and on the condition of heat-treatment, this form of test does not lend itself readily to a determination of fundamental stress-strain relations. For this and other reasons, more attention has been paid recently to the tension impact test. An extensive literature already exists on the subject and only those investigations somewhat closely related to the present paper will be mentioned. For a more comprehensive list, the reader is referred to the Symposium on Impact Testing of the A.S.T.M., 1938. The work of Mann,1 Clark and Dätwyler,2 Nádai and Manjoine,3 Winlock and Leiter,4 Deutler,5 and Brinkmann,6 however, deserve especial mention. In most of the previous investigations on the subject, when stress-strain relations were obtained under high rates of loading, it was the common procedure to determine stresses based on the original area and strains based on the original length. Stress-strain curves were then constructed by [P OL, plotting So = Ao as a function of eo = Lo] where A o and Lo refer to the original area and gauge length, respectively. At present there exists a paucity of true stress-strain data in the impact problem. The advantages of constructing so-called true stress-strain curves in order to reveal the fundamental physical properties of the material for the tension test were discussed recently by one of the authors' It was shown that the true physical behavior of the material in the tension test could best be represented [by plotting the average true stress, S = P as a function of e = q' = log o = log Log] where P, A, L, S, e, and q' refer to the load, the cross-sectioned area while the load P is applied, the actual gauge length, the average true stress, the true strain and true reduction in area, respectively. Besides giving a better physical representation, the method has certain additional advantages in that the stress-strain curve so plotted becomes a straight line from the maximum load point to fracture. The construction of such- curves, however, while comparatively simple for the slow rates of loading customarily used in the tension test, presents certain difficulties for tensile impact in that both loads and diameters are required throughout the test. THE development of the cube-on-edge secondary re-crystallization texture in Si-Fe strip depends upon the ability of inclusions to restrain normal grain growth. This ability is determined by the number and size of inclusions, which, for a given composition, is controlled by the thermal history of the material during the prior processing.' It has been shown2 that increasing the silicon content decreases the solubility of sulfur, and it is the purpose of this note to show the consequences of this decreased solubility for secondary recrystallization. Heats were made as previously described and cast into graphite molds.' The compositions are shown in Table I. Slabs 1 in. thick were cut from the ingots and either hot-rolled from 1000°C in the as-cast condition or after one of the heat treatments described later. The processing to the final gage of 12 mils followed the previous procedure.' To avoid cracking, the 5.2 pct Si alloy was cold-rolled at 150" to 200°C rather than at room temperature. The rate of reaction of nitrogen with liquid iron and with binary alloys of iron and Al, Cb, Cr, Ni, O, S, Si, and W were measured. The surface active elements, oxygen and sulfur, decrease the rate markedly. The other alloying elements have very little effect on the rate except when they function as deoxidizers, The rates of absorption and de-sorption were found to be equal. Several possible reaction mechanisms which may control the rate are considered. In order to describe completely the behavior of nitrogen in steelmaking processes, the mechanisms of mass transfer between the gaseous and liquid phases, nitrogen and iron, respectively, must be understood. A kinetic study to determine the nature of these mass transfer processes was undertaken, and the results of that investigation are presented in this paper. Specifically, the study was directed toward determining the influence of alloying elements on the rates at which pure nitrogen gas at constant pressure is absorbed and desorbed by liquid iron solutions: A previous paper1 reported measurements of the equilibrium solubility of nitrogen in liquid binary iron alloys. The experimental data are presented and discussed first and then several possible rate limiting mechanisms are considered. PREVIOUS RESEARCH The results of several investigations on the rate of absorption of nitrogen by liquid iron and iron alloys have been reported.2-14 There is little agreement on the rate coefficients among these studies because of the influence of geometry on the experimental system and of the purity of the liquid iron. The rate was found to be influenced by alloying content for the binary liquid iron systems: Fe-Al,2 Fe-C,4,6 Fe-Cr,4,5,8 Fe-Mn,5 Fe-Ni,5,8 Fe-O,9,10 Fe-O,9,10 and Fe-Si.2,6,7,11 Several investigators12"15 have reported that the rate of nitrogen absorption is increased in a reducing gas mixture and decreased in an oxidizing atmosphere. A mechanism for the retardation by oxygen of the absorption of nitrogen has been described by Naeser18 as the formation of an iron oxide film at the gas-metal interface. The film slows the absorption rate until it disolves in the metal, thus permitting nitrogen to enter the liquid iron. Karwat17 discussed the influence of oxygen in terms of the formation of gaseous molecules of nitrous oxide which represent a higher energy form than the nitrogen and oxygen or the oxidizing gas and consequently constitute an energy barrier for the process. Fischer and Hoffmann10 showed that the oxygen markedly reduces the rate of absorption of nitrogen, the rate constant being one order of magnitude smaller in liquid iron containing 0.15 to 0.24 pct 0 as compared to that in melts containing 0.001 to 0.02 pct 0. Although Chipman and Murphy2 reported that the rate of absorption of nitrogen in liquid iron was essentially independent of temperature, Eklund3 found that the rate increases strongly with increasing temperature as did Kootz4 and Saito.5,6 Karnaukhov and Morozov7 also reported a large temperature coefficient, but related it to increased stirring at higher power inputs in an inductively heated system. All of the authors above have treated their results assuming that the reaction is diffusion controlled, that the surface reaction is in equilibrium with nitrogen gas, and that a "first order" reaction takes place. Karnaukhov and Morozov7 and Humbert; who studied the rate of absorption in a closed system by observing pressure changes in the system as a function of time, concluded that their results best fit a diffusion-type analysis. "The mechanization of mining operations in underground coal mines has led to faster cutting rates of coalfaces with increased levels of emission of gaseous and particulate contaminants in the workings. Consequently, the fresh air streams from the main ventilation systems reaching distant workings are often insufficient, ineffective or inadequate and have to be supplemented by auxiliary ventilation systems to create and maintain the required working environments underground. The efficiencies of auxiliary ventilation systems are largely affected by drivers of the system such as the type and capacity of the fan; the type, length, diameter and condition of the ventilation ducting and the distance from the discharge end of the intake ducting to the face. Traditionally, single point measurements of methane gas concentrations using either flame safety lamps or hand-held measuring instruments have been used to assess how safe underground coal workings were. Unfortunately, such occasional measurements of methane gas concentrations do not give an accurate picture of the real gas concentration in the working as they are often taken from the easily accessible locations in working. Continuous monitoring of the methane gas concentration in development headings enables a better assessment of the environmental conditions prevailing there. All variations in the methane concentrations are more easily captured on a continuous monitoring basis than by instantaneous single point measurements. The approach adopted in this work was to continuously monitor the concentration of methane very close to the face and about 60 m outbye in development headings, observe the types of auxiliary ventilation equipment and their sizes being used in the working as well as noting the lengths from the discharge ends of the forcing and exhaust ductings to the face.In this paper, empirical methods are used to calculate the mean efficiencies of the auxiliary ventilation systems in selected development headings in coal mines in North America. This enables the assessment of the effectiveness of the auxiliary ventilation systems and the identification of the system drivers in them. The results show that the efficiencies of the forcing systems ranged from 17.02% to 96.81% while the efficiencies of the overall systems varied from 6.04% to 54.16%. The distance from the discharge end of the intake ducting to the face appeared to be the strongest driver in the performance of the auxiliary ventilation systems studied. It was also noted that when the discharge end of the intake ducting to the face does not exceed 7 m, there were faster purging rates of methane at the face and the efficiencies of the overall auxiliary ventilation system were greater than 50%. These findings are very important in underground coal mining in North America as they will assist to avert calamities, such as the Westray coal mine disaster in 1992 which resulted from the explosion of methane gas, by identifying which components of the ventilation system need special attention to create safe working conditions underground."

A heat of electrolytic iron, to whzch alunzinutn and nitrogen had been added, was hot-rolled, cold-rolled 90 pct, and recrystallized at temperatures from 500" to 700°C. Primary recrystallization textures appear to arise from competitive growth of two types of nuclei: 1) those having orientations belonging to the "usual" primary recrystallization texture found in riming steel, and 2) those with the {111} (110) ovientation. Development of a (111}(1 10) component in the primary recrystallization texture occurs only over a certain interval of isothermal recrystallizatzon temperatures when the material is supersaturated with respect to the precipitation of AlN. Lowering the degree of supersaturation depresses the temperature interval in which a (111)(110) component occurs. An elongated, 'pancake-shaped" recrystallized pain structure and a marked delay in the start of recrystallization were found in all specimens which were supersaturated with respect to A1N precipitation after cold work, regardless of their recrystallization texture. ONE of the consequences of killing low-carbon steel with aluminum is a significant change in recrystallization behavior. About 15 years ago, Solter and eatttiel showed that this behavior was largely controlled by aluminum and nitrogen in the steel. If complete precipitation of A1N was prevented before cold rolling, an increased "recrystallization temperature" was observed in subsequent. annealing, and the recrystal-lized grains were not equiaxed. Leslie et a1.2 studied this phenomenon in some detail and clearly demonstrated the relationship between A1N precipitation, recrystallization kinetics, and the development of "pancake-shaped" grains. It has also been known for some time that aluminum-killed steels, processed to produce elongated "pancake" grains, develop a (11 I}( 110) primary recrystallization texture. This texture has not been found in iron or low-carbon rimming steel as a primary texture4j5 but has been observed following grain growth in electrolytic iron.5 The present work was undertaken to study in more detail the effect of A1N supersaturation on recrystallization textures in iron. LITERATURE REVIEW The deformation texture in heavily rolled iron has been studied in detail by Bennewitz.~ The texture consists primarily of a partial fiber texture about a (110) axis in the rolling direction, designated here as fiber texture A. It includes the range of orienta- tions (111)[110] - (001)[ 110] - (11l)[110]. A weak secondary texture also is present.6 This is a duplex partial fiber texture about two (110) fiber axes located 60 deg from the rolling direction and 30 deg from the sheet normal. The range of this texture, designated here as fiber texture B, about the [101} fiber axis is (112)[110] - near (545)[252] - (211:1[011] *The range given here follows Bennewit~.~ A few pole figures from re-crystallized material indicate a broader range than this.' However, the components which are strongest in the recrystallization texture are in this range.'________________________________________________________ Primary recrystallization textures in unkilled steels can be accounted for by growth of members of fiber texture B present in the deformed metal.5 However, while members of fiber texture B dominate the primary texture, other orientations survive primary recrystallization as well. In particular, some {111}(110) members of fiber texture A must also grow during primary recrystallization, because a well-defined {1ll)( 110) texture develops during subsequent grain growth at 700°C.5 The unusual recrystallization behavior of deformed supersaturated solid solutions has been attributed to: 1) retention of the solute in solution,' 2) formation of coherent, preprecipitation solute clusters prior to and during re~r~stallization,~ and 3) formation of a precipitate prior to and concurrent with recrystallization.'~-'~ When aluminum is supersaturated with iron, the difference in grain boundary mobility between general high-angle boundaries and certain special coincidence site boundaries is apparently eliminated.' In aluminum-killed steels, precipitation of A1N can take place at ordinary subcritical recrystallization temperatures. The rate of precipitation increases with increasing aluminum or nitrogen contents.2'13 There is some doubt, however, as to whether true precipitates form during the time at temperature needed to complete recrystallization. Leslie ef a1.2 found that precipitation in one steel was complete after about 100 min at 700GC, or after about 1000 min at 650GC, as measured by chemical analysis for AlN. Aoki et a1.,13 using internal friction for dissolved nitrogen, showed that a large fraction of the dissolved nitrogen was removed from solution within a few minutes annealing time at temperatures from 400" to 800°C. However , the rate of formation of AlN, as detected bv chemical analvsis. was much slower than the apparent rate of nitrogen removal. Hasebe,'~~ using carbon extraction replicas, has identified A1N precipitates by electron diffraction in a 0.2 C steel, solution-treated at 1300°C and annealed 2 hr at 700°C. Borchers and kim,I6 also using a replication technique, observed precipitates after annealing treatments as short as 2 min at 640°C. However, Leslie et a1.' state that no A1N precipitate can be seen while recrystallization is being inhibited in aluminum-killed steel.

One of the primary objectives of the Bureau of Mines solid waste utilization program is the recycling of the magnetic fraction of municipal solid waste called raw refuse scrap. In this investigation, several types of scrap of differing quality, including refuse and turnings, were melted in a 1-ton electric-arc furnace in various combinations to produce steel in noncritical (construction) grades. In-formation on furnace operation and on the behavior of tramp and alloying elements was obtained. The research showed that it is possible to produce acceptable steel from a variety of steel scrap. Although some scrap is routinely used in steelmaking, it was found that up to 50 to 55 pct of the scrap charge can be ref-use, provided it is combined with higher quality scrap. The chemistry of the steels was generally acceptable, and all of them were rolled without difficulty. The specification (ASTM 615) for the steels produced was grade 40 or grade 60, containing 0.30 or 0.40 pct C, with mini-mum yield strengths of 40,000 or 60,000-psi, respectively. Most of the steels met the specification requirements. In-formation on typical microstructures of some of the steels is included. The composition of some furnace dusts showed high levels of Sn, Pb, and Zn.

Utilisation of modern 3D visualisation tools, can improve our ability to correlate between different datasets, and thus to produce more accurate geological models. Here, we present an application of such techniques to the Century Zinc Deposit, northwestern Queensland, Australia. This stratiform orebody is the second largest Zn resource in the world (167.5 Mt at 8.2 per cent Zn, 1.2 per cent Pb, and 33 g/t Ag). It is hosted in the Page Creek Syncline affecting Mesoproterozoic shales and siltstones of the Wide Supersequence of the Isa Superbasin. As in other deposits, (eg McArthur River, Lady Loretta, George Fisher and Dugald River), the mineralised sequence is bound by an important regional structure, the Termite Range Fault, which partly intersects the deposit along its Eastern side. This fault is thought have been active during sedimentation and probably also during mineralisation of the lowest part of the Wide Supersequence. The anastomosing geometry of this fault system and crosscutting relationships with other NE trending structures indicate that it was reactivated several times from Mesoproterozoic to at least late Devonian times (>1000 million years in total); as a result, the ore sequence is subdivided into several fault blocks.Using two different computer modeling packages (GOCAD and 3ds max), we have reconstructed and restored the stratigraphic horizon with the highest Zn content, realised a series of isopach maps for each mine scale stratigraphic unit, plotted the three-dimensional distribution of Zn, Pb, Ag, Fe and SiO2, and have begun to evaluate the degree of correlation between thickness changes and sulphide zoning. With this approach it is possible to better understand the timing of mineralisation from a genetic perspective, because the origins of the orebody are controversial. Three-dimensional reconstruction is a vital tool for identification of syn-sedimentary and post-sedimentary fault activity. In conjunction with sulphide precipitation, these are factors that greatly influence the stratigraphic thickness distribution. Post-sedimentary deformation can be recognised directly by core logging and pit mapping, but the effect of tectonic movements during sedimentation (growth faults in particular), that represents a substantial variable when we attempt to reconstruct basin evolution, is difficult to evaluate without this methodology. The 3D models improve our understanding of the local basin architecture, identifying similar grade characteristics at different structural levels and thus suggesting that much faulting and folding are post-mineralisation events. In addition, we identified several growth faults adjacent to thickened layers, representing two possible sedimentary depocentres. These thicker domains apparently relate to the highest Pb content. If further analysis of rocks, thickness and grade distributions support this preliminary correlation, then a syn-sedimentary model for mineralisation might be applied, and would contrast with the sub-surface model for mineralisation of Broadbent et al (1998).

Discussion of the paper of BENJAMIN F. TILLSON, presented at the NEW York meeting, February, 1915, and printed in Bulletin No. 9S, February, 1915, pp. 505 to 528. T. E. STURTEVANT, * New York, N. Y.-Mr. Tillson's paper on hammer drills is of much interest to me. Early in 1909 I was invited to make tests of our drills at the Franklin mine of the New Jersey Zinc Co. The first drill that we tested gave very poor results. This was a drill having a hammer piston 1¾ in. in diameter and 3 ¼ -in. stroke, the hammer piston weighing about 6 1b., the 1 ¾ in. diameter being exposed to pressure at either end. Although this drill has given excellent results as a sinking drill, its performance as a stoping drill was poor. This was one of the surprises of the limestone as spoken of by Mr. Tillson. This led me to further investigation, and a second drill was developed, with a much lighter piston and a somewhat longer stroke, that gave better results. In the design of this drill, no attention was paid to the cost of construction, our whole attention being given to the increase in drilling speed and reduction of the quantity of air used. The first drill of this type had a piston weighing about 2 ½ lb. and a stroke of 3 ¼ in. The piston was made with a hammer-bar extension, and the cylinder was made with two diameters of the bore, one in which the hammer-bar extension moved and the larger one in which the piston head moved. All the cycle for conversion of natural and reprocessed uranium of ROSATOM’s “TVEL” Fuel Company is concentrated at the Siberian Chemical Plant. Conversion capacities are located on two sites, i.e. the Radiochemical Plant, which refines feedstock, and the Conversion Plant, which produces uranium oxides and uranium hexafluoride. Liquid radioactive waste arising in the process, after pretreatment, is transferred to a dedicated national operator for underground disposal. Environmental strategies pursued by the Fuel Company involve the introduction of process solutions intended to eliminate liquid radioactive waste and convert it into a solid phase. In the 5–7 years coming, work will be performed to refurbish and upgrade conversion facilities of the Siberian Chemical Plant that will principally change its radioactive waste management scheme. This paper describes the current waste management scheme and sets out planned schemes for management of natural and reprocessed uranium waste, which will be implemented in the refurbishment of conversion facilities of the Siberian Chemical Plant. The new technologies for the management of liquid radioactive waste from uranium conversion described in the present paper have an undeniable advantage over the current technology mainly due to significantly less environmental harm.

The development of novel methods for the investigation of the subsoil contributes to the improvement of geotechnical research, enhances the obtained geotechnical characterization and may reduce the investigation cost by reducing the number of required tests. Non-destructive testing methods, performed either in situ (i.e. electrical tomography, seismic refraction, etc) or in the laboratory can provide initial data and perhaps estimates of rock/soil properties. This study focuses on the development of rock material properties and/or characteristics based on non-destructive laboratory testing of a number of stones, ranging from porous (bioclastic) limestones to impervious marbles. Seismic velocity measurements as well as attenuation signals were digitally recorded using a digital oscilloscope. Data were processed using a novel technique of spectral analysis available through special Matlab packages employing Fourier transform methods. More specifically, the NFFT (Non Equispaced Fourier Transform) transformation was applied to seismic waves traveling through the subsoil using the Autosignal program (by Seasolve) and the Specgramdemo program included in the Signal Analysis toolbox of Matlab 6.5 (Mathworks). Results indicate a definite relationship between the frequency content of the signal and the rock type as well as the degree of saturation of the specimen.

Several longwall faces in India have collapsed due to adverse geological conditions and/or inadequate capacity of powered supports. Thus it is imperative to access the capacity of a powered support and its interaction at longwall faces of varying geomining conditions in advance with lots of confidence. To achieve this, an index has been developed to ascertain the front leg pressure (FLP) of chock-shield support and roof-to-floor convergence (RFC) at longwall faces. The index called ?Longwall Face Stability Index? (LFSI) has been developed using statistics and Finite Element Modelling (FEM). The front leg pressure (FLP) and roof-to-floor convergence (RFC) predicted from the LFSI are validated with the field monitored data from two longwall panels. In this study, an attempt is also made to incorporate various geomining conditions into the finite element models typical of longwall mining practice. The index has taken into account the wide variations of geomining parameters like thickness, young?s modulus and friction angle of main roof (small, large), coal type (soft, hard), powered support capacity, and depth of coal seam. Thus, LFSI can be thought of as an index representing combined effect of roof type, geomining conditions and powered support capacity.

O presente estudo apresenta um método de avaliação de desempenho de operadores na análise de ferro via úmida baseada na Norma ISO 2597-2, utilizando dados de carta de controle do processo como fonte de informação. A partir do Processo Analítico Hierárquico (AHP), definiram-se pesos que refletem o desempenho dos operadores quanto à produtividade, precisão e veracidade, indicadores estes que são combinados posteriormente num indicador geral de desempenho (IGD). Dados da carta de controle do Laboratório Químico do Terminal Marítimo de Ponta da Madeira (TMPM) foram utilizados para alimentar o IGD e gerar uma classificação dos operadores, possibilitando tomadas de decisão, tais como a dedicação exclusiva dos melhores operadores na análise de ferro e a realocação dos demais para outras atividades, e a identificação dos pontos fracos de cada operador com inferior desempenho, de forma a direcionar capacitações. Além destas melhorias diretas, verificou-se a possibilidade de utilizar o desempenho no IGD como critério para promoções dos operadores, servindo estas como incentivo para a equipe na busca contínua de melhoria em sua habilidade analítica, assim como o aumento da produtividade.

The past five years have seen communications techniques and hardware developed by the Bureau of Mines and its contractors increasingly brought into use in U.S. mines. The Bureau philosophy has been to help develop and introduce new hardware that goes as far as possible toward meeting the mining industry's needs. The Bureau programs are also designed to provide continuous fallout of new communications capabilities which are introduced to the mine operators as they occur. As more progress is made in meeting mine communications needs, it is hoped that the mining industry will readily adopt the equipment and techniques that it finds most useful in meeting its individual needs. This paper reports on recent advances achieved in the development of improved mine communications systems. In May 1975 the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) conducted a mine communications technology meeting to provide a brief overview of the USBM communications technology developments in the past 5 yr. This meeting lasted for 1 1/2 days. Therefore, I have elected to narrow this paper to a brief review of recent underground mine communication developments. "Spent auto-catalyst is a promising secondary resource of platinum group metals (PGMs), which are being extensively used in automobiles catalytic converters to control the hazardous gaseous emissions (CO, NOx and hydrocarbons). Several pyro or hydrometallurgical routes has been employed to recover PGMs from such spent materials but there is no proper process for recovering the other constituents metals. Therefore, it causes the loss of other major constituents like, Al and Mg along with rare earth metal Ce. In the present study, we investigate the dissolution of Al and Mg using sodium hydroxide (NaOH) roasting followed by a sulfuric acid (H2SO4) leaching; thereby concentrating the PGMs and Ce in leached residues. The effect of roasting temperature, time and amount of NaOH were varied. Subsequently, the dissolution behavior of metals in H2SO4 as a function of acid concentration was investigated from the roasted samples. At an optimal condition for roasting at 600°C with 1:1 NaOH-to-catalyst ratio and 60 min duration, the maximum of Al and Mg were dissolved in 1 M H2SO4 solution at ambient temperature (~25°C). Thus obtained leached residues containing enriched PGMs and Ce content can be treated separately for the recovery of these high-value metals.INTRODUCTION Spent auto-catalyst has been considered as a potential resource for recovering the platinum group metals (PGMs) (Jha et al., 2013). The commonly used auto-catalyst is made of cordierite (2MgO.2Al2O3.5SiO2) in which the chloro complexes of PGMs are impregnated onto the surfaces of porous washcoat of alumina substrate (Aberasturi et al., 2011). The average concentration of PGMs in ore are 2-4 g/ton for Pt, 7-2 g/ton for Pd and 0.2-0.5 g/ton for Rh, whereas, an individual catalytic converter weighing about 1 - 2 kg contains on average 1.56 g Pt, 0.62 g Pd and 0.156 g Rh (Upadhyay et al., 2013). Moreover, recovery of PGMs from spent auto-catalyst offers other advantages like, simple process, low cost and less pollution, as compared to recovery from primary resources (Dong et al., 2015).Therefore, technologies to recover PGMs from spent auto-catalyst has become attractive in the recent past and their recycling contribution has been accounted for 35% Pt, 26% Pd and 36% Rh of the quantity consumed in the production of auto-catalysts (Johnson Matthey, 2016)."

In the United States, improvements in methods of combustion have made possible the use of the smaller sizes of anthracite. This coal is now being reclaimed from the culm banks accumulated by the miners in the more prodigal years. To-day the freshly mined "slush" is segrega,ted and stored against the time when, through briquetting or some other means, it may be utilized as a commercial fuel. For many years Europe has achieved enviable results in the conservation of her small coal by briquetting. This profitable industry, first placed on a commercial basis in France in 1842, has grown to such magnitude that the production during 1913 exceeded 36,000,000 short tons. Briquets produced in Great Britain are used principally for steam purposes and the greater part of the output is either exported or taken by the Admiralty. On the Continent the briquets are sold in all branches of the coal trade. The French railways consume from 16 to 40 per cent. of their fuel in briquet form, and in Germany the lignite briquets (of which 20,000,000 tons were produced in 1913) are as familiar and interesting to the American traveler as the huge porcelain stoves in which they are burned. It is not strange, therefore, that aggressive and far-sighted promoters heralded this means of converting our ubiquitous coal waste into revenue. To the superficial student the briquetting process seemed so simple as to make success easy. It is for this reason principally that the path of the industry in America has been strewn with failures. The rash enthusiast had either not worked out the mechanical problems involved or had failed to grasp the local conditions under which the briquets must be made and sold. It may be confidently stated, however, that in spite of the many vicissitudes through which it has passed, coal briquetting is now an accomplished economic success in this country, and as a profitable adjunct to the coal industry it has come to stay. O processo de pelotização consiste na aglomeração e posterior tratamento térmico das pelotas, ajustando as propriedades químicas e mecânicas para o transporte ao reator siderúrgico. A otimização e aperfeiçoamento do processo no forno pode ser realizado experimentalmente utilizando um pot grate. Trata-se de um equipamento no qual uma carga de pelotas cruas é submetida a condições similares às encontradas no processo industrial. Contudo, um projeto de experimentos em um pot grate pode levar semanas. Além disso, alguns parâmetros como: taxas das reações e balanço de energia são difíceis de serem monitorados. Tendo em vista isso, o presente trabalho buscou desenvolver um software de simulação para avaliar o comportamento das pelotas em um pot grate de maneira rápida e prática. Os resultados mostram uma interface amigável para a avaliação da temperatura de pelota, umidade da água, queima do carbono e balanço de energia. Os modelos implementados foram comparados e validados com trabalhos publicados na literatura. O modelo também serve como uma ferramenta de Projetos e Experimentos no Pot, uma vez que permite testes mais rápidos e de custo mais baixo.

Productivity and operating expenses are everything when it comes to judging how well your mine and company are doing. Stakeholders are always looking at these numbers and trying to understand if productivity is improving, if operating costs are trending downward and what you are basing your decisions on. o make improvements you first need to understand how you are performing. If you can?t get this basic information, you will never improve. You will not be able to make simple decisions related to maintenance, operations or production. Forget about planning, as you will only be guessing based on the numbers some stakeholder or your executive wants to see. The problem miners run into is not that the data doesn?t exist; it does, but typically it?s raw, it?s everywhere and its volume is huge. Today there is more on-board computing capability in shovels than we had on our desktops three years ago. Add other mobile equipment, plant systems and multiple OEM vendors to the equation and the challenge is daunting.
