Gold mill effluents contain toxic pollutants such as cyanide (CN), thiocyanate (CNS), ammonia (NH4-N), and a variety of toxic metals. Various practical and economical technologies are in use for the removal of CN and toxic metals from gold mill effluents, however, the removal of CNS and NH4-N is challenging. The presence of CNS and NH4-N may make effluents toxic to aquatic life. The new Canadian Metal Mining Effluent Regulations will require mine effluents to be nontoxic. As a result, there is a need to develop practical and economical technology for CNS and NH4-N removal. The Mine Effluents Program in the Environment Group is presently evaluating biotechnology processes for the removal of CNS and NH4-N from gold mill effluents. The processes being evaluated are attached growth systems such as a Rotating Biological Contactor (RBC) and completely mixed suspended growth systems such as a Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR) operating in a batch mode. The research to date at MMSL has shown that the RBC is very effective in removing CNS and NH4-N from simulated effluents. The NH4-N removal project showed that the RBC is capable of removing 0.8 g NH4-N/m2 of RBC disk area per day at an average temperature of 4.5 oC and hydraulic loading rate of 0.02 m3/m2/d. The RBC was also found to be very effective in removing CNS (feed = 200 mg/L and effluent < 1 mg/L) at 8 oC and a hydraulic loading rate of 0.02 m3/m2/d. The SBR was effective in removing CNS and NH4-N (generated from CNS degradation) at SBR operating conditions of two-12 h treatment cycles and a temperature of 12 oC. The end product of CNS and NH4-N oxidation was NO3-N, which is relatively non-toxic.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has been experimenting with flotation processes to separate the spodumene-beryl ores mined at Kings Mountain, N.C. The success to date as well as the present status of the process is discussed. Further experimentation is underway and studies will be made on the milling costs involved in the flotation process. The pegmatites of the Kings Mountain-Lincoln ton, N.C., area constitute the largest known domestic reserve of beryl and spodumene. The reserve is estimated to contain 90 million tons of pegmatic material with 1,280,000 tons of recoverable Li,O(lithia) as spodurnene.&apos; The pegmatites also contain 0.4 to 0.5 pct beryl disseminated throughout the orebodies. The pegmatites may contain a potential reserve of 240,-000 tons beryl, equivalent to approximately 34,000 tons of BeO. Different flotation methods for separating beryl from feldspar or quartz, or both, have been developed by various investigators.2-7 On the other hand, published information is limited on concentration of spodumene-beryl ores. As the response of beryl and spodumene to flotation is essentially the same, a successful separation of the two minerals depends upon use of a selective depressant or a selective collector for one of the minerals. Several years ago, the U.S. Bureau of Mines, recognizing the need for developing a large domestic supply of strategic beryl, undertook studies to develop improved methods of recovering this mineral. Because of the low beryl content of the pegmatites, economic production of the beryl entails its recovery as a byproduct of spodumene flotation. Thus, the development of procedures that would provide for maximum recoveries of the spodumene, as well as the beryl, was a primary objective of the studies. Tests were made on run-of-mine ore and spodumene flotation tailing from the Foote Mineral Co.&apos;s spodumene concentrator at Kings Mountain (Fig. 1). Pet-rographic analyses of the ore and flotation tailing are given in Table I. Detailed analyses and examinations of the ore and tailings revealed that the beryllium was present in the form of a low-alkali beryl. The crystals were small, rarely larger than 14-mesh diam, and were clear and colorless. About 10 pct of the Li20 content of the ore was present in the mica and feldspar components of the pegmatite. In some weathered ores the associated clays also contained small amounts of lithia. This is typical of pegmatites in the Kings Mountain area. LABORATORY TESTS In the past, a vigorous chemical treatment of the spodumene surfaces with acid or caustic soda has been considered essential for satisfactory selective flotation of the spodumene from the other minerals in pegmatites. Many tests were made during this investigation to determine if chemical treatment of the spodumene could be eliminated in favor of a reagent combination that would depress the other minerals while selectively floating the spodumene. A simple reagent combination and process was developed that gave better spodumene recovery and grade of concentrate than the more elaborate acid or caustic treatment methods previously used. The finely ground ore pulps were conditioned with either an ammonium, alkali, or alkaline earth lignin sulfonate and sodium fluoride, and the spodumene was floated and cleaned using oleic acid as the collector. The spodumene tailing was deslimed, conditioned with sulfuric acid and coco amine acetate, and floated to reject mica. The mica tailing was thickened and conditioned with hydrofluoric acid, then washed to remove the acid. The washed pulp was conditioned with sodium hydroxide for pH control, and the beryl was floated and cleaned with oleic acid as the collector. Table II summarizes the results of the laboratory test work. About 77 pct of the spodumene and 75 pct of the beryl were recovered from the pegmatitic material. The spodumene concentrate assayed 6.1 pct Li20 and 0.01 pct BeO, and the beryl product assayed 3.0 pct Li20 and 1.57 pct BeO. Similar results were ob-

Almost every oil well drilled into limestone formations in Kansas is treated with hydrochloric (muriatic) acid upon completion: to increase potential capacity of well and thereby increase its "daily allowable" production; to shorten time required to produce recoverable oil; and to increase quantity of oil recovered ultimately from reservoir. Acid treating marked a forward step in the producing fields of Kansas; in fact, many old limestone fields that almost had reached their economic producing limit were "rejuvenated" with acid and their capacities to produce increased several times. It also caused a marked increase in the ultimate oil recovery of some old and nearly depleted fields of Kansas. The effect of the acid was due to the cleaning-out action by the acid at the face of the limestone, the enlargement of the small drainage channels, and the apparent penetration of the acid to previously undrained porous and saturated strata. Studies of the effects of acid were made in the Fairport field, three groups of wells in the El Dorado field and the Shutts field. Estimation of increased recoveries resulting from acid in these fields and groups of wells ranged from 1000 to 2400 bbI. per acre. Limestone structures that had been tested by drilling and found noncommercial were later completed as commerical oil-producing formations through the use of acid. The Kansas City formation, Valley Center field of Kansas, is an example. Increased oil production and revenue from the old fields justified the reconditioning of equipment, which in most cases had become in poor mechanical condition. The first treatment with hydrochloric acid of an oil well in Kansas was in October 1932, and by the end of 1937 almost 6000 wells had been treated. Many wells were treated more than once and the total number of treatments exceeded 8000 by the end of 1937. Approximately 12 3/4 million gallons of acid was required for these treatments. "The experimental study on the phase equilibrium and distribution of minor elements such as chromium and copper between magnesia saturated FeOx-MgO-SiO2 slag and Fe-Ni alloy were carried out under controlled oxygen partial pressure between 10-6-5 and 10-10 using CO and CO2 mixed gas at 1773 and 1873 K.The effect of slag additives such as lime (CaO/SiO2 molar ratio: 1) and alumina (AlO1.5/SiO2 molar ratio: 0.1) on the distribution behavior of the minor elements was also investigated.The value of distribution ratio for chromium, defined by (%Cr in slag)/[%Cr in alloy], is larger than 70 at the pO2 region conducted in the present study for the MgO saturated FeOx-MgO-SiO2 slag at 1773K. These value are almost 4-order higher then that of nickel though the distribution ratio of copper shows similar values with nickel. Analysis of the data indicates that addition of lime in the slag and the increase of temperature reduce the dissolution of chromium into the slag and the addition of aluminum increases the dissolution of chromium into the slag while reduces the dissolution of copper and nickel.IntroductionChromium. is a minor element in a nickel oxide ore but a Japan major component in the secondary material of stainless steel and is also introduced in the Fe-Ni production process due to dissolving bricks of a furnace. Chromium is a concerned matter for the beneficial utilization and disposition of ·slag because Cr6+ is a harmful element. Considering Fe-Ni as an alloy component in steel making, and the demand of high purity nickel, chromium is an -undesirable element that has to be eliminated into slag prior to the steel making, or the production of high temperature refractory alloys. On · the other ·hand chromium is an element of steel alloy for many applications, thus Fe-Ni containing chromium in minor element is desirable in some stainless steel making."

A fosfatização é um pré-tratamento superficial que tem como principais funções: a lubrificação, proteção contra corrosão e proteção contra abrasão. Os metais fosfatizantes mais comumente utilizados são o zinco, manganês e o ferro, sendo o zinco o mais aplicado nas indústrias siderúrgicas, automobilísticas e de linha branca. Atualmente, grande parte das pesquisas relacionadas aos processos de fosfatização é referente ao fosfato de zinco, sendo escasso o estudo sobre fosfato de manganês. O objetivo deste trabalho foi estudar a cinética de formação da camada de fosfato de manganês em aços baixo carbono, analisando a influência do substrato na formação da camada fosfatizada. As análises foram baseadas na obtenção das curvas de ganho de massa, sendo caracterizadas por microscopia eletrônica de varredura. Os resultados indicaram que para o substrato constituído essencialmente de martensita revenida, uma maior quantidade de carbonetos resultou em uma menor taxa de ganho de massa, pois estes funcionam como sítios ativos no processo de fosfatização, fazendo com que exista uma maior densidade de núcleos.

"Samarium oxalattr particles was precipitated in oxalic acid aqueous solution from samarium-loaded D2EHPA solution emulsified with a conventional impeller. The calculated fractional precipitation of samarium oxalate was reasonably compared with the value determined by chemical analysis. Morphological variation of oxalate precipitate particles was then examined with H2C2O4 concentration in aqueous solution, Sm(III) and D2EHPA concentrations in organic phase. The needle-like precipitate was identified as Sm2(C2O4)3 10H2O by XRD. Precipitates obtained at higher H2C2O4· or Sm(III) concentration greatly decreased the length of major axis of precipitate, while those at higher D2EHPA concentration increased it. The oxalate was further precipitated under ultrasonic irradiation. However, the morphological variation caused by theses processing variables was not so evident under ultrasonic irradiation as in an impeller or shaking mixer.IntroductionThe materials processing of the rare earth elements must be reviewed from the scope of industrial ecology, since they have the potential applications of magnetic materials as well as secondary battery in developing programs of the electric vehicle. The technological trend to develop the electric vehicle may greatly influence the concept of materials processing, since the global· environmental problem must accommodate with the sustainable development for mankind. The recycle design must be a key issue in the materials science and engineering.Solvent extraction provides a unique separation technology -in this sense. Doyle (1)(2) reported the integrating solvent extraction with processing of advanced ceramic materials, whose chemical composition and microstructure must be precisely controlled. In her paper, the higher productivity inherent to the present process superior to hydrolyzing metal alkoxides was emphasized. Oxalic acid has been used as precipitant for rare earth purification process, since rare earth oxalate has a very small solubility in water and can be easily decomposed to oxide. It is thus suitable for precipitation stripping agent in cationic exchange type extracting system (i.e. D2EHPA, VA-10, PC-88A and so on)."

Estimated domestic production of pumice and pumicite in 2004 increased about 23 percent since 2003, according to the U. S. Geological Survey (USGS). The USGS estimate of domestic production of 687 kt(757,000 st) for 2003 turned out to be 870 kt (959,000 st)of actual production. The USGS estimated the value of pumice and pumicite sold or used in the United States to be $26 million in 2004, up $4 million from the value in 2003. There was an estimated decrease in the mine, or mill, average price to $24.14/t ($21.90/st) in 2004 from $25.19/t ($22.85/st) in2003.

"Many of the iron ore deposits on the western end of the Mesabi Range Minnesota consist of the so-called ''wash ores."" Because of their high silica content these ores must be washed or concentrated to make them merchantable. Washing plants have been in operation for 20 years, during this period large quantities of tailings have accumulated in tailings ponds. These tailings contain the aggregate millions of tons of iron oxides which, if recovered, would greatly to the available tonnages and to the revenues of the mining companies. It the purpose of this paper to outline give results of concentration tests on tailings.In order that the reader may understand more clearly the type of material under consideration, a short description of the characteristics of the wash ores of the Western Mesabi Range and a brief resume a washing methods that have been are now being employed will be given. Appleby and Newton4 In their description of the district and of the ores say:The Western Mesabi district embraces the territory west of the town of Nashwauk in Itasca County. The territory to the east of this dividing line is known as the Central and Eastern Mesabi district. This subdivision is rot wholly arbitrary. While the ore bodies in the two districts resemble each other in. shape, size, and general structure, there is a marked and very important difference in the character of the respective ores. For purposes of comparison, the western deposits have been called washable ore bodies, and the central and eastern, standard ore bodies. The latter ores are the result of natural concentration processes which have teen carried far enough to produce a large proportion of high-grade ore Wet can be marketed direct; the Western Mesabi ores present a lesser degree of natural concentration and are as a rule of too low grade to admit of marketing without preliminary treatment. In many cases the grade can be improved by washing, hence the material is called washable ore. Exceptions to thin general rule may be noted in both districts. Many of the Western Mesabi ore bodies contain quite a proportion of merchantable ore. There are also portions of central and eastern Mesabi ore deposits which are of low grade and which can be improved by washing."

Mine waste and mine reclamation are topics of major interest to the mining industry, the government and the general public. This publication and its companion volume are the proceedings of a conference held in Pittsburgh, April 19-21, 1988. There were nine sessions (50 papers) that dealt with the geochemistry, hydrology and problems of mine waste and mine water, especially acid mine drainage. These comprise Volume 1. The nine sessions (43 papers) that dealt with reclamation and restoration of disturbed lands, as well as related policy issues, are included in volume 2. Volume 2 also contains the ten papers that pertained to control of subsidence and mine fires at abandoned mines. Poster session presentations are, in general, represented by abstracts; these have been placed in the back of both volumes.

Talk some about your background. Mining, particularly coal, runs in the family. I come from a mining family, one generation re-moved. Both of my grandfathers worked in the coal mines. My mother?s father had worked as a coal miner in the South Hills area of Pittsburgh after coming to America from Croatia. My father?s father (who died of black lung long before I was born) had been born in America and worked as a mine foreman and superintendent in mines just outside the Pittsburgh area. My father often talked about when, as a child, he accompanied his father underground on Sundays to check the mine pumps. While I never expected to go into mining, I often read some of my grandfather?s books on mining technology that my father had kept. I started college at Penn State and drifted into mining engineering as my third declared major. I was finally realizing the importance of a career choice. I?ve never regretted that decision. One of my children, Mark, has followed me into mining engineering, much to my surprise and pride. Evidently, he had been listening to the many conversations I had with friends and colleagues in the industry and never considered any other career path. He has since married another mining engineer, Kray Davis Luxbacher, so we truly have a mining family and can talk mining when we get together. My other children are in more mundane lines of work and rapidly tire of the mining discussions. I?ve worked for operating companies: Pittsburgh Coal Co. (then a division of Consolidation Coal Co., and a company I believe both of my grandfathers had worked for), Island Creek Coal Co., and a research organization: Occidental Research Corp. I am now with Glenn Springs Holdings Inc., dealing with legacy issues (primarily environmental) related to Occidental?s previous mining operations (coal and minerals). As such, I have a broad view of the industry and the critical changes that are shaping our industry.

Physical treatment and chemical treatment of spent lithium-ion battery were studied in our research team. Especially we developed two types of acidic leaching for crushed powders containing LiCoO2 of spent lithium ion battery. One of them is sulfuric acid leaching with H2O2 as a reducing agent. The leaching rates of cobalt, lithium and the other metals were above 99 % at the condition of 2 M H2SO4, 10 vol. % H2O2, 75 °C, 300 rpm agitation speed, 250 g/5L solid liquid ratio and 75 minutes reaction time. And the other leaching process is the oxalic acid leaching. In this process more than 99% of Li and less than 1% of Co were dissolved at the condition of 3M oxalic acid, 80°C reaction temperature, 300rpm agitation speed, 50g/L initial solid/liquid ratio and 90min extraction time. Each process has its advantage and disadvantage. In sulfuric acid leaching, leaching reagent is very cheap and cobalt could be recovered into cobalt hydroxide. On the other hand, oxalic acid is more expensive than sulfuric acid but lithium could be dissolved selectively. Also cobalt could be recovered into cobalt oxalate and it could be changed into cobalt oxide after heat treatment. In order to select the effective recycling process, recovery rate and purity of cobalt hydroxide and cobalt oxalate were compared and it was investigated which process was more environment-friendly and economical.

The torsion effusion method has been used to measure the vapor pressure of thallium over pure thallium in the temperature range 931" to 996&apos;k The resulting 100 cal per g-atom is in excellent agreement with previous values. Vapor pressures of T1 above seven Ag-Tl alloys ranging from 33 to 90 at. pct T1 were measured at 979K. Calculated silver activities show a positive deviation from Raoult&apos;s law, approaching ideality near the liquidus. Measured thallium activities scatter less than previous measurements using the electromotive force technique. Values for the silver component were calculated by Gibbs-Duhem integration. This paper reports the results of a study of the liquid Ag-T1 system by the torsion effusion method. The method has been discussed in detail previously1 and will be only briefly summarized here. The sample is contained in a cell which is suspended on a torsion wire. Vapors effusing from orifices on opposite sides of the cell exert a torque on the wire. The torque is related to the vapor pressure by the following relation: where D is the torsion constant of the wire, 4 the angle of torque, fl and f2 the correction factors determined by Freeman and seamy2 to account for orifice length, a1 and a2 the areas of the orifices, and ql and q2 the distances of the orifices from the axis of rotation. By using the same cell for pure thallium and the alloy, it follows that: so that most systematic errors are eliminated in determining the activities. EXPERIMENTAL 99.999+ pct T1 was obtained from the American Smelting and Refining Co. and 99.999 pct Ag was obtained from Cominco American, Inc. Seven Ag-T1 alloys, ranging in composition from x^\ = 0.33 to 0.90, were prepared by melting together weighed amounts of the pure metals in sealed, evacuated Vycor tubes and quenching the melts in water. The apparatus and graphite cells were the same as those used by Hawkins and Hultgren3 in their study of the Pb-Sn system. RESULTS Ten measurements were made on pure thallium in the temperature range 931" to 996K, and the results are presented in Table I. Values of were calculated using tabulated Gibbs (free) energy functions.4 No dependence of on temperature or orifice size was found, indicating that equilibrium was attained. Data for the Ag-T1 alloys are shown in Table 11. Values were smoothed with respect to composition by a plot of where . DISCUSSION The value = 43,520 * 100 cal per g-atom for pure thallium (95 pct uncertainty limit) is in excellent agreement with previous investigations.4 In the Ag-T1 system, this study shows positive deviations from Raoult&apos;s law at all compositions. Fig. l gives the phase diagram according to Hansen, and Fig. 2 presents the activity values measured in this study as well as those from electromotive force measurements at 950°K by Terpilowski, Kundys, and slaby.&apos;

The effect of strain rate, temperature, and interstitial impurity concentration on the flow stress was investigated in a poly crystalline Fe-2 pct Mn alloy. The temperature dependence of the flow stress was found to be independent of the interstitial impurity concentration, removal of interstitials merely decreasing the atherma1 stress level. Below 160%, the large temperature dependence of the flow stress was interpreted in terms of the Dorn-Rajnak theory of the Peierls mechanism of plastic deformation. Above 160"K, some other thermally activated intrinsic meckanisln seems to be operating. The strong temperature dependence of the flow stress of bcc iron at low temperatures has been studied by numerous investigators and interpreted in terms of several different thermally activated dislocation mechanisms. The following mechanisms have been proposed: a) interaction of dislocations with interstitial impurity atoms1 or with solute atoms in general; b) interaction of dislocations with clusters of impurity atoms;3 c) resistance to the motion of dislocations due to jogs on screw dislocations;* d) resistance to the motion of dislocations due to the Snoeck effect;&apos; and e) interaction of dislocations with the intrinsic resistance of the bcc lattice or Peierls "hills". In previous work: it was found that the plastic behavior of polycrystalline iron containing 2 wt pct Mn (and 100 ppm C + N) is in good agreement with predictions based on the Peierls mechanismlo from 77" to 160°K whereas from 160" to about 370°K another as yet unidentified thermally activated mechanism is operative. The purpose of the present investigation was to determine the effect of interstitial impurities on the temperature dependence of the flow stress, by purifying the previously investigated alloy with respect to interstitial impurities. The investigation revealed that removal of the interstitial impurities to a level that eliminated Cottrell locking and the Portevin-LeChatelier effect (i.e., serrations in the stress-strain curve due to dynamic strain aging) affects neither the strong temperature dependence of the flow stress at low temperatures nor the general characteristics of the higher-temperature behavior. Such purification, however, lowered the athermal yield stress. I) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE AND RESULTS The material used in this investigation consisted of an Fe-2 wt pct Mn alloy having the following additional elements present: 0.004 pct C, 0.006 pct N, 0.05 pct 0, 0.004 pct S, 0.003 pct P, and 0.001 pct Si. This was the same material as that studied in the previous investigation and will henceforth be referred to as the "impure material". The as received -jr by 2 in. hot-rolled bars were cold-rolled to 0.08-in. thickness, recrys-tallized under argon for 30 min at 80O0C, and further cold-rolled to 0.053-in. thickness. Flat tensile specimens 3 in. wide having a 1.625-in.-long gage section were machined from the sheet and then purified. The first stage of purification consisted of holding the specimens at 850°C for 24 hr in a stream of hydrogen saturated with water vapor at room temperature. Material prepared in this fashion will subsequently be referred to as "wet hydrogen purified material". It has been estimated that this type of treatment reduces the carbon content of iron to less than 5 ppm.&apos; The second stage of purification consisted of holding the specimens in a closed system through which hydrogen was circulated past the heated specimens as well as a zirconium hydride getter. The specimens were held at 850°C and the getter at 800°C. The process was continued for 212 hr. The starting material for this process was wet hydrogen purified material. Material prepared in this manner will be referred to as "ZrHz purified material". The technique used was substantially the same as that described by Stein et al.&apos; who have shown that the carbon level at the end of the process is reduced to about 5 parts per billion. The mean grain size of the three materials was found to be -60 C( for the impure material and -160p for the wet hydrogen and ZrHz purified materials. All tensile testing was carried out on an Instron Testing Machine either in controlled-temperature baths or at fixed-point baths such as boiling liquid nitrogen, and so forth. When fixed points were used the temperature was kept constant to better than *1°C whereas in all other tests the temperature variation was less than *2°C. Test of Purity. It was not possible to determine the purity achieved at each stage of the purification because the resulting level of interstitial impurities was near or below the limit of sensitivity of standard analytical techniques. INTRODUCTION The development of refining processes involving gas injection into liquid metals has seen the evolution of a variety of designs [I]. During the last few years or so the top, bottom and side blown processes have, essentially, been combined to produce a series of mixed gas blowing schemes (eg. the LBE [2,3] and LD-OB processes [4,5]). Although, a variety of mixed gas blowing processes have been carefully engineered and recorded operational experience now attests to their effectiveness, optimising their design and operational performance is another matter. Detailed process analysis of such operations is impeded by the complex nature of the physical and chemical processes involved: . fluid flow behaviour of the liquid metal and injected gases, . chemical reactions in the vessel, . mass and heat transfer within the fluid phases in the vessel, . influence of the geometry (eg. location of the tuyeres, etc.), . monitoring the operational performance. By and large, design and operating parameters evolve from a combination of laboratory scale experiments, pilot plant work and, of course, practical engineering experience. Conventionally, the gas-liquid system used to model the industrial process is air-water, for a number of valid reasons including – . visual demonstration plus geometric and (to some extent) dynamic similarity, . the fact that the system demonstrates, at least, qualitatively many of the complex features of gas injection - interaction between the gas and the liquid - the nature of the gas flow behaviour - qualitative indications of mass transfer rates Important experimental contributions to the understanding of gas liquid systems include the work of Brimacombe [6], Wraith [7], T.Robertson [8], D.Robertson [9], Guthrie [10] and Szekely [11] (these references provide starting points to identify the major published work in this area). Although air-water systems have been instrumental in providing a great deal of qualitative insight into the fluid flow behaviour of the processes, reliable quantitative predictions are more problematic. A number of workers (notably Brimacombe and colleagues [6, 12])have demonstrated that different gas-liquid systems can lead to wide variations in behaviour. Other limitations of physical modelling include the assumptions of isothermal flow, scale- up of turbulent flow behaviour and the inability to directly include the effects of chemical reactions. The above limitations in physical modelling, therefore, yield a natural role for mathematical modelling provided that it can be made comprehensive enough whilst remaining cost-effective. The major physical processes involved in gas injection systems may be summarised as . behaviour of the gas envelope structure in moving through the liquid metal . the global movement of the liquid metal . momentum interaction between the liquid metal and the injected gas . heat transfer and mass exchange via the chemical react ions. The behaviour of gas envelopes forming at a tuyere and then moving through the liquid has been investigated thoroughly by a large number of workers. Such models are generally based upon simple physic- al concepts derived from visual observation. An early model by Davidson and Schuler (DS), based upon a force balance between the liquid inertia and a combination of the bouyancy and momentum forces on the envelope, has proved to be a useful tool in predicting bubble volumes at detachment [13]. The DS model has been successfully modified in a number of ways [14-17] to cope with heat transfer and reactive transfer rates, etc. Furthermore, the basic ideas summarised above have also been confirmed on industrial converters by both Guthrie [I8] and Brimacombe [19]. Models have also been developed to predict the behaviour of the "chemical" component of some gas-liquid systems. However, one thing is clear; all gas-liquid reactive systems are governed by the degree to which effective mixing occurs. As such, the processes are dominated by the behaviour of the heat and mass exchange of the two phase fluid flow system. O aço inoxidável duplex (AID) representa uma classe importante de aços inoxidáveis, particularmente para aplicações que exigem alta resistência mecânica e à corrosão. Sendo assim, o estudo das propriedades eletroquímicas dos filmes passivos formados em AID tem sido uma contribuição importante para a compreensão do comportamento protetor contra a corrosão. O objetivo deste trabalho é estudar o filme passivo formado no aço 2205 laminado a morno utilizando espectroscopia de impedância eletroquímica, (EIE), em ambiente de íons de cloreto. Para esse propósito, as chapas como fornecidas de AID foram laminadas a morno a 600°C até 60% e 80% de redução na espessura e submetidas aos testes eletroquímicos. O estudo mostra que o tratamento termomecânico utilizado não favoreceu a formação do filme passivo nessas condições e levou a uma menor resistência à polarização. O AID 2205 como fornecido apresentou uma maior resistência à transferência de carga na comparação com as amostras laminadas a morno.

Este estudo trata da simulação numérica por elementos finitos de um conjunto de trilhos, talas e parafusos de fixação, com o objetivo de verificar as tensões que ocorrem no conjunto, devido às cargas solicitadas e aplicadas nas condições de apoios estabelecidas pela norma NBR MB 3076/1989, além de duas condições de aperto dos parafusos: pré-carga de 50% da tensão de escoamento e 90% da tensão de escoamento do parafuso. Os resultados mostraram que o efeito de aperto do parafuso é mais significativo na distribuição de tensões do conjunto do que o efeito da carga externa. O aperto do parafuso a 50 e 90% do escoamento provocou maiores valores de tensões de Von Mises distribuídas tanto no parafuso quanto na tala, ultrapassando o escoamento dos materiais. É recomendável considerar que os menores valores de torque podem facilitar o desaperto da porca na prática, devido às passagens da roda sobre o conjunto.

"Some non-flotation chemicals are added to flotation circuits directly and indirectly to control issues such as scaling and dust in other areas of the operations. Since dosage levels are generally not high, a standard laboratory float test may not be able to determine the effect of a specific chemical on the productivity of the flotation circuit. This paper presents a laboratory testing protocol that uses kinetic float studies to test the effect of normal to extreme doses of antiscalant and dust chemistries (5–100 g/t). Results indicate that this protocol helps to predict potential interference by a particular chemistry on the flotation circuit.RÉSUMÉ Certains produits chimiques ne servant pas à la flottation sont ajoutés directement et indirectement aux circuits de flottation afin de contrôler des problèmes tels que l’entartage et la poussière dans d’autres secteurs des opérations. Étant donné que les niveaux de dosage sont généralement faibles, un essai standard de flottation en laboratoire pourrait ne pas être en mesure de déterminer l’effet d’un produit chimique spécifique sur la productivité du circuit de flottation. Le présent article définit une procédure d’essai en laboratoire qui utilise des études cinétiques de flottation pour vérifier l’effet de doses normales à extrêmes de produits chimiques antitartre et anti-poussière (5 à 100 g/t). Les résultats indiquent que ce protocole aide à prédire l’interférence potentielle d’un produit chimique particulier sur le circuit de flottation."

The deformation behavior in tension of spheroidized carbon steels was studied at room temperature as a function of carbon content, 0.065 to 1.46 wt Pct, and carbide particle size, 0.88 to 2.77 p. It was found that the Hall-Petch strength-grain size relation is directly applicable to the yield and flow stresses of the two lower-carbon steels , 0.065 and 0.30 pct C. The strength data for the medium- and high-carbon steels, 0.55 to 1.46 pct C, also satisfied the Hall-Petch relation, provided that these data are based upon the particle spacing. Beyond 4 pct strain, the flow stress data of all the steels studied could be represented by the same Hall-Petch relation with dinerent spacings for grain boundary and particle strengthening. The behavior of the higher-carbon steels was consistent with the postulated formation of a dislocation cell network during processing and initial deformation (up to 4 pct strain). The cell size was assumed to be equal to the planar particle spacing. The true stress at the ultimate tensile strength was also found to be a function of the particle spacing. At a given temperature and strain rate, the yield and flow stresses of carbon steels depend on the type and dimensions of the microstructure. Starting with the work of Gensamer et al. in 1942,&apos; experimental studies on pearlitic and spheroidized carbon steels revealed that the strength of steels is a function of two main parameters: the ferrite grain size2&apos;3 and the carbide particle spacing;1&apos;4&apos;5 on this basis, two different strengthening mechanisms have been developed to apply to steels of low and high carbon contents, respectively. In polycrystalline iron and mild steels the grain boundaries are regarded as the major structural barriers to slip. The relation between strength and grain size is generally represented by the Hall-Petch equation which is based on a linear proportionality between strength and the inverse square root of the average grain size.2&apos;3y677 However, Gensamer et al.&apos; and Roberts et related the yield strength of medium -and high-carbon steels to the carbide particle spacing alone, and they found a linear relation between the logarithm of the mean free path in the ferrite and the yield strength in both spheroidized and pearlitic steels. By means of the electron microscope, Turkalo and LOW&apos; extended the study to finer structures; they concluded that the logarithmic relation is not valid for the entire range of microstructures unless grain boundaries are also included in the measurement of the mean free path. For the specific case of spheroidized steels, Ansell and aenel&apos; found that the yield strength data,4&apos;5 when plotted as a function of mean free path, fit the Hall-Petch equation; however, T&apos;ysong found that the same data fit the 0rowanl0 relation if a planar inter-particle spacing is used. Recently Kossowsky and ~rown" studied the strength of prestrained spheroidized steels, 0.48 and 0.95 pct C, and concluded that the strength due to the carbide dispersions varies linearly with the reciprocal of the square root of the mean free path between carbide particles and dislocation networks. Such networks were first observed by Turkalo." The conclusion common to all these studies is that the available slip distance in the ferrite is the most important variable in determining strendh. Previous work on carbon steels is restricted to limited composition and strain ranges. The mechanism which governs the flow properties is not clearly understood, and, in particular, little is known about the composition dependence of the transition between grain boundary strengthening and particle hardening. The purpose of the present work is to investigate the strengthening mechanism in spheroidized steels over a wide range of carbon content, 0.065 to 1.46 wt pct, and plastic strain, yielding to necking. The spheroidized structure was chosen because of its relative simplicity and the relative ease of control and measurement of the structural parameters. The experimental work is limited to tensile testing at room temperature at constant extension rate. The effects of the carbide particles on the fracture behavior of spheroidized steels are discussed elsewhere.13 EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Eight different grades of vacuum-cast carbon steels were supplied in the form of forged and rolled plate by the Applied Research Laboratory of the U.S. Steel Corp. The compositions furnished with these steels are given in Table I; the carbon content ranges from 0.065 to 1.46 wt pct, or from 1.0 to 22.3 vol pct of carbide. The steel plates were cut transversely into rods a little larger than the test specimens, 1 in. gage length, i in. diam. The rods were austenitized in air (enriched with CO by a consumable carbon-rich muffle) at 50° C above theA, orA., temperature for 2 hr and then quenched in oil with vigorous stirring. The as-quenched rods were tempered in two stages in order to obtain the desired distributions and sizes of carbide particles. The rods were first tempered at 460° C for 10 hr and then at 700" C for periods ranging from 4 hr to 3 days, in vacuum. After final machining, all specimens were vacuum-annealed again at 650°C for 1 hr in order to relieve residual stresses. The tension tests were carried out in two steps. The initial part of the load-strain curve, up to about 2 pct strain, was determined on a Riehle testing machine with an extensometer of small strain range, 4 pct strain, in order to obtain the yield and initial flow piopertiesi As soon as the first part of the test was finished, the specimen was placed in an Instron testing machine equipped with a strain gage extensometer with a maximum strain range of 50 pct. This brief discusses the installation and application of sleeved piles of two different types for two different projects, the W, Seattle to Harbor Island Swing Bridge Project and the Seattle Access Project. A description of these relatively novel piling systems is given, as well as some notes on their installation and application. As implied by the term "sleeved" these are piles which consist of two piles, an inner pile combined with an outer concentric sleeve pile. Background, Swing Bridge The Swing Bridge project is virtually unique in the world in that it is a "lift and turn" swing bridge. It is also a concrete, cast -in-place segmental bridge which is designed to be moveable.
