"Face mapping is a simple but invaluable means of geological and geotechnical data acquisition whereby intact rock properties, rock mass properties, discontinuity properties, and structural orientation can be assessed. Although traditionally done via direct contact with the mapping face through techniques such as line mapping or window mapping, remote face mapping using various digital techniques has become increasingly popular in recent years. Sishen is a large open pit mining operation requiring a comprehensive geotechnical data-set to evaluate pit wall design and stability with the necessary level of confidence. Geotechnical borehole data, face mapping data, geotechnical laboratory testing data, and implicit structural models provide the main sources of this information. Although a large geotechnical borehole database has always been maintained at the mine, face mapping has in the past been restricted to sporadic and isolated stability assessments. In 2013 the mine acquired a terrestrial laser scanner with the resolution, photographic capabilities, and software required to carry out geotechnical face mapping. A face mapping procedure was set up based on accepted face mapping methods, the data requirements of the mine, and capabilities of the laser scanner system. Mapping data obtained from the scans was integrated into the Acquire geological data management system, a purpose-designed structured query language (SQL) database system used for storing the mine’s geotechnical data. Within the geotechnical design process, having face mapping data available has improved confidence in the properties of the rock mass and structural environment, allowing for better definition of geotechnical design sectors. Overall, the face mapping and geotechnical analysis features of the terrestrial laser scanner in use make it an invaluable geotechnical data capture tool, provided a system is in place to store mapping data in a manner that allows for meaningful rock mass and structural information to be produced. IntroductionFundamental to the geotechnical design process is the acquisition of a reliable and complete geotechnical data-set. Geotechnical data acquisition will typically commence during the early stages of a project and continue well into the operational life of the mine, with the data confidence progressively increasing as the amount of data captured increases. Sishen mine currently bases all open pit geotechnical designs and geotechnical risk assessment on geotechnical borehole data in conjunction with interpreted structural models. Boreholes are logged and the data is captured in an ongoing process. This process forms the initial step in the geotechnical design and risk assessment process whereby the raw data is used to classify the strength properties for each lithology, provide inputs for geotechnical block models, and ultimately provide the inputs for slope design analyses. To date, borehole data has provided the only largescale, organized data-set for input into geotechnical analyses at Sishen. Although borehole data is the best and most comprehensive form of geotechnical data, there are some shortfalls that can be addressed by other data collection methods. This report describes the work done to develop a coal mining machine to increase productivity and recovery from thin seams beyond the highwall, in addition to decreasing the miner's susceptibility to to highwall hazards First, radar transducers were adapted to measure coal thinkness and detect rock and coal interfaces; Then, the radar was incorporated into a cutterhead with steering controls. Next, visual displays were designed to show cutter position in the coal seam, and anticipated change in coal seam inclination, Finally, development of a telemetry system made remote control of the cutterhead possible. Simultaneously, a high-performance extended depth (HPxD) auger machine was designed with an automatic system to handle 600 ft of 36-in, diameter dual spiral flight conveyor sections. A two man crew controls all operations from a weather conditioned cab outside the VDZ, either at night or day time. As a primary mining tool, working 4000 hr/yr (2 shifts/day) recovering 60% of the coal 600 ft beyond the highwall, productlon to 500,000 ton/yr can be achieved. The U.S. Bureau of Mines implemented a monitoring program in a western U.S. coal mine for the evaluation of both conventional and alternative support systems. The conventional support consisted of 2.5-m-long vertical bolts installed in an 5.5-m-wide entry. The alternative system consisted of 2.5- and 3-m vertical and inclined bolts installed at a higher density during widening of a cut from 3.6 to 5.5 m. Roof deformation, roof stress, rib deformation, and bolt loads were monitored during the 2-month test period. In addition, roof failure patterns and lithology were characterized within the six-entry main test section. Results were analyzed using roof deformation and failure profiles, roof stress profiles. bolt loading and bending moment diagrams, and numerical models. The mechanics of roof deformation, failure, and support reaction in three zones in the mine roof were characterized. Significant improvements were shown in roof stability in the section using the alternative system. Results are encouraging and indicate the effectiveness of alternative support systems and excavation techniques for limiting inelastic deformation of roof in highly stressed underground mines.

"Latin America is facing a rapid increase in internet use. Penetration with electronic equipment is in some countries approaching the level of industrialized countries. There is an evident need to resolve the management of “end-of-life” computers and other electronic equipment. Several studies in Latin America assessed the increasing e-waste quantities and confirmed the importance of a sustainable e-waste management. This paper gives an overview on the status on e-waste management in Latin America, explains the challenges for establishing an e-waste management system in a developing country setting and highlights the social and economic potential and the possibilities of a regional approach.IntroductionGlobal ICT-Trade and generation of e-waste from ICTThe global production of electronic devices and particularly of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) faces the biggest industrial expansion of the history: OECD figures show that global trade of ICT technologies has reached 7.7% of the gross world product by 2004, the major proportion accruing from China [1]. In 2006 an estimated 230 million computers and 1 billion cell phones have been sold worldwide which corresponds to a volume of 5’848’000 t [2]. As a consequence, Waste from Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE), or e-waste, is by far the fastest growing waste component. It reaches more than 5% referred to Municipal Solid Waste and e-waste generation in developing countries according to UNEP is expected to triple by 2010 [2].According to the OECD e-waste is “any appliance using an electric power supply that has reached its end-of-life” [3]. The European WEEE directive [4] distinguishes 10 categories of ewaste: Big household appliances, Small Household Appliances, IT and Telecommunications Equipment, Consumer Equipment, Lighting Equipment, Electrical and Electronic Tools, Toys, Leisure and Sports Equipment, Medical devices, Monitoring and Control Instruments, and Automatic dispensers. In this paper e-waste and WEEE are used as synonyms. Focus will be laid on e-waste from IT equipment (IT-waste), corresponding to category 3 of the European WEEEDirective."

Ethical concerns of in-vivo procedures and poor repeatability of non-invasive techniques have been major limitations in estimating vibration-induced spine loads through experiments. The biodynamic models of seated human body exposed to whole-body vibration (WBV) have evolved for defining the frequency-weightings, enhancement of human responses to WBV, and developing anthropodynamic manikins for seating assessment activities. The widely reported mechanical-equivalent models, solely based on through- or to-the-body biodynamic response functions, do not seem to resemble the biomechanical structure and do not yield information on the dynamic loading and deflections of segments of concern, namely the spine. On the other hand, biomechanical models with representative anatomical structure and anthropometry are being attempted to simulate segmental movements and the coupling effects, using Finite elements (FE) or multi-body dynamics (MBD) formalisms, which could provide important insights into the inter-vertebral forces [1]. While the FE models pose considerable complexities primarily related to characteristics of the bio-material properties, the MBD technique with discrete rigid bodies offers the flexibility to create multi-segment models with relative ease and lower computational cost. In this study, a preliminary multibody dynamic model of a seated human body exposed to WBV along the vertical direction is formulated using MSC/ADAMS software. The model validity is demonstrated by comparing selected responses with the available measured data. Methods The seated human is represented by nine rigid body segments, including: head, neck, thoracic and lumbar torso, pelvis, hands and thighs, as shown in Fig. 1. The rigid bodies are coupled through different rotational and translational joints, some of which are force elements to allow vertical translations and sagittal–plane rotations of the segments. The measurements of transmission of vertical vibration through-the-body generally require subjects to voluntarily maintain a vertical head position to reduce head-accelerometer orientation errors. The head–neck–shoulder joint is thus considered to be rigid. The shoulders are assumed to be rigidly attached to the thoracic segment. The torso is made up of three (upper, middle and lower) segments connected by visco-elastic revolute and translational joints to permit relative pitch and vertical motions. The forces and torques generated by the joints are derived assuming linear stiffness and damping properties, which were identified from published studies. The pelvis is connected to the rigid seat by similar elements representing the visco-elastic properties of the buttock tissues. The two thighs are rigidly connected to the pelvis, while the segment masses are chosen from the anthropometric data for the 50th percentile male subject. The response was good-one of the best the SAIMM has had to its various questionnaires. 231 replies were received from 2768 members representing a response of 8,35%. For fellows and Members together, the response was 13,7%. The spread of responses based on respondents' work situation appeared to be well balanced with some bias from those in consulting organizations. Members' perceptions of their employers' positions withrespect to environmental management looked somewhat optimistic, but it is encouraging to note that they reported that more than half were developing environmental management systems. Training of varying degree was taking place at al levels in their organizations. Members saw their Institute as an important agent inlifting environmental awareness, literacy and responsibility not only through the journal and symposia, but also by liaison with government departments and educational institutions. Most respondents saw environmental legislation both from local and overseas sources as affecting their organizations, their products and services with the emphasis on corporate image, core business and sales.

THE art of melting nonferrous metals, in smelting, casting, and in compounding of alloys, is highly dependent on a knowledge of the temperature of the metal. This knowledge may reside in the experience and judgment of the melter, or it may be based on measurement by suitable instruments. It-is our purpose to discuss briefly the instruments available for such measurements, and more at length the present, practice in molten metals, without recommendation. In the limits of time and space allotted, we can do little more than mention the available methods of measurement that are directly applicable in this field. In the 1939 edition of the Metals Handbook, issued by the American Society for Metals, pages 285-310, there is a more extensive discussion of pyrometry than can be attempted here, which should be referred to for details we must omit. For reasons that will appear, thermoelectric pyrometry will constitute the major portion of our discussion of the subject, only limited attention being given to radiation or optical pyrometry. METHODS OF MEASUREMENT THERMOELECTRIC PYROMETRY A thermocouple consists of two dissimilar wires, or a wire inside a tube of a dissimilar material, joined together at one end, which is placed in the region or medium where the temperature is to be measured, while the other ends are connected through suitable lead wires to a voltage-measuring device, which may be a millivoltmeter or a potentiometer. An electromotive force is generated in the circuit, which is proportional to the difference in temperature between the hot junction and the junctions of the lead wires to the measuring instrument. If this latter temperature is maintained constant, the e.m.f. measured varies only with the temperature of the hot junction. Every thermoelectric pyrometer is calibrated for a particular cold-junction temperature such as 0°F., 32°F. or 75°F., but usually it is more practical to compensate instrumentally over the probable range of cold-junction temperatures than to maintain the junction at the particular temperature for which the instrument was calibrated. Thermocouple Materials Only a very few pairs of metals are in frequent use for pyrometric measurements. The most generally used are iron-constantan for temperatures up to 1500°F. in oxidizing and up to 1800°F. in reducing atmospheres and chromel-alumel, which may be used in oxidizing atmospheres at temperatures up to 2400°F. for intermittent service. The accuracy of the latter deteriorates rapidly at temperatures above 2200°F. The author?s paper at RETC 2007, ?Alternative Contracting Methods? addressed strengths and weaknesses of DBB+DB and introduced Construction Manager/General Contractor (Portland model) and Alliancing (Australian model). Considerable interest in these was expressed by several public agencies at that Conference and at the presentation. The author is assisting the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) and the Toronto Waterfront Revitalization Corporation (TWRC) with possible implementation of Alliancing. WSDOT is evaluating ways to do this and is considering a delivery methodology, under existing Legislation, based on the CMGC Portland model with incentives and disincentives, moving towards Alliancing. This paper will build on the 2007 paper and update implementation considerations.

A necessidade de melhorar as propriedades dos refratários monolíticos para resistir às condições operacionais cada vez mais severas e instáveis das casas de corrida de Alto-Forno tem sido um grande desafio para os fornecedores de refratários de maneira a garantir a segurança dos canais de corrida e sua disponibilidade para operação. Este trabalho apresenta as propriedades de novos concretos refratários Al2O3-SiC-C (aplicados por vibração ou bombeamento/projeção a úmido) desenvolvidos para resistir ao severo mecanismo de corrosão que ocorre na linha de gusa de canais principais e que exige constante atenção dos operadores das casas de corrida. Testes realizados com os novos concretos refratários em canais de corrida principais de diferentes Altos-Fornos de grande produtividade revelaram uma significativa diminuição da velocidade de desgaste do revestimento refratário na linha de gusa oferecendo uma condição operacional segura e confiável às casas de corrida.

Tmzsile tests were performed on Armco iron samples, at various ternpe.ralures and strain rates, ocer a wide range of grain sizes. Analysis of the data suggests that the plot of the lower yield stress, against d-1/2,where 2d is the acerage grain diameter, is not linear (as is often assumed) but is concave toward the d. axis over the range of d-from 7 to 53 . The different values of the parameters obtained by other workers can be explained, in part at least, by the observed curvature. This curvalure is shown to be consistent with a model of yielding based on dislocation pile-ups; however, the values of obtained by fitting our data to this model differ appreciably from the values generally reported. The equation proposed by Cottrell, viz.: is a plausible empirical fit to the experimental results. The purpose of this paper is to comment on the validity of the widely used linear relationship first proposed by all' and Petch and coworkers2"4 between ay, the lower yield stress, and 2d, the average grain diameter, for bcc metals, viz.: Many workers, see Refs. 2 to 7 and Table 11, have fitted this equation to their experimental results and have obtained acceptable fits over the relatively narrow range of grain sizes used by most of them. Indeed, in some cases, so few data points were available that any more sophisticated fit would have been irrational. In most of the interpretations,'-' oi is thought to be a measure of the friction stress accompanying dislocation movement, and ky was originally inter- preted as a measure of the dislocation locking but is now believed by Cottrell" to be a function of the dislocation creation rate. In the "unpinning" theories, k, is equated to where od is the unpinning stress and 1 is the average distance from the boundary of the grain where yielding is taking place to the nearest dislocation source in an unyielded grain. Other considerations (see, for example, Refs. 11 and 12) lead to equations with a similar form to [I] where different meanings may be attributed to the parameters. While there are doubts as to the physical significance of the parameters i and k, they continue to be used by many workers; interpretations of the variations in the behavior of ferrite materials following certain treatments, e.g., aging,'3 neutron irradiation,14 have been given frequently in terms of these parameters. Some theories of the mechanical behavior of bcc metals are based on this relationship. We have investigated experimentally the oy - d-'lZ relationship for Armco iron over a wider range of grain sizes and with more data points than those given in published results. The analysis of our data suggests that the oy—d-'" relationship is not linear but is in fact concave towards the d-'I2 axis. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION The experimental work was carried out on 3-mm-diam Armco iron rods which were prepared by wire drawing from 5-mm-diam rods. By annealing in vacuum at temperatures between 7000 and 1200°C for various times, grain sizes from 7 to 20,000 grains per sq mm were obtained, the grains in all cases being regularly shaped. Grain sizes were measured by lineal interceptand by area methods; only specimens with Amax/A values of 3 to 6 were used in the Petch-Hall plots (where A is the average area of a grain and Amax is the area of the largest grain observed). For all the specimens used, the number of grains in a cross section exceeded 50, which should be adequate to avoid grain size effects.'= Tensile tests were performed at 296", 219, and 17l°K, using

From the inception of zinc retorting on a commercial scale in the United States in 1890,' the retort employed has undergone wide variations in its composition and manufacture, facilitating in part equally remarkable improvements in furnace capacities. The early day hand made clay retort was charged with carbonates or silicates or with coarse dead roasted concentrates mixed with a large proportion of charge fuel resulting in a relatively low zinc burden and fired 24 hr in direct coal fired furnaces. Its modern counterpart is fabricated in hydraulic presses from clay mixtures containing sizeable amounts of either silicon carbide or silica flour, charged with sintered flotation concentrates to more than three times the early day zinc burden and fired 24 to 48 hr in gas fired furnaces. This paper does not attempt to describe in detail the early day clay retort practice as it is well outlined in treatises by Ingalls,2 Lodin,3 Liehig,4 Hofman5 and others. A brief review of clay retort practice is presented together with a description of the major developments since 1912. Clay Retorts The Belgian type retort, both in the circular and elliptical forms, has been used almost exclusively. Typical dimensions of press made clay retorts around 1910 are shown in Table 1. Variations in these dimensions were used at different plants according to local conditions to a maximum inside diameter of 9 in. and inside length of 54 in. However, the effective heat penetration in a 24 hr firing cycle and the tendency of the retort to bend limited the retort size. Use of the elliptical vessel was an attempt to present a stronger cross-section resisting the tendency to bend and to increase the burden without increasing the depth of heat penetration. One exception to the 48-54 in. length was the 60 in. retort used as early as 1905 at Palmerton by means of supporting the last 12 in. at the butt end with a specially designed furnace back-wall. This backwall construction with the 60 in. retort had been developed and used at Bethlehem by G. G. Con-vers and A. B. DeSaulles. An attempt was made at Blende, Colo. to use even larger retorts of the Rhenish type based on European practice and requiring much higher furnace temperatures. Satisfactory plastic clays capable of withstanding these temperatures were not available, and the plant never operated successfully. PREPARATION OF BATCH Composition of the clay retort by weight was 40 to 50 pct raw clay and the balance "grog." Generally speaking the mix consisted of 7 parts plastic clay to 9 parts grog by volume. Principal source of the clay used was the Cheltenham vein—sometimes referred to as "St. Louis city clay." A typical analysis was A12O3-31.0 pct, SiO2-50.0 pct, Fe2O3-2.5 pct, MgO-0.3 pct, CaO-1.5 pct and loss on ignition 14.0 pct. At the smelter the clay was weathered whenever possible and then crushed to 0.08 in. or finer. Grog consisted of calcined adobies, cleaned retort scrap and cleaned refuse fire brick such as old furnace brick, blast furnace linings, and others. Saggers from ceramic plants and calcined flint clay were later used. The grog materials were ground to 0.12 m. or finer. Occasionally coke dust up to 10 pct of the mix was substituted for a part of the grog following European practice.² Particle size of the grog has a major influence on the retort properties—the larger the grain, the better can the retort withstand thermal shocks, resist bending at furnace temperatures and resist corrosion from slag; the smaller the grain, the lower the loss of zinc vapor through the retort walls. Grog forms the skeleton of the retort, and the clay shrinks around its grains to act as a binder. In the drying process, the grog has a stabilizing effect on the drying rate, decreasing shrinkage and giving up previously absorbed water to the surrounding clay to minimize the danger of cracking or checking.² Grog and clay were mixed through a horizontal pug mill with 10 to 20 pct water added, depending on whether the retort was to be formed by hand or mechanically, more water being required for the hand process. The batch or "mud" extruded from the pug mill was cut in convenient lengths for handling, stacked in piles or in special rooms, covered with wet burlap and allowed to "rot" or age from 1 to 8 weeks to increase plasticity. HAND MOLDING If the retort was to be molded by hand, the mud was repugged after the rotting period and given to the molders. Their molds consisted of 3 sheet iron or wood cylinders, each one third the retort length and defining the outer shape of the retort. Recent expansion programs have made the Yunkang underground coal mine the number one producer in Shenxi Province. The mine is the newest in the Datong Coal Administration, currently rated at around 3 Mt/a of coal. Located in the Wa Chushi mountain range about 23 km north of the city of Datong, the mine has undergone a series of expansion phases since startup in 1973. Initial design capacity was 1.5 Mt/a and ultimately, production will be brought to an estimated 7.0 Mt/a by 1985, according to mine superintendent Li Jia-zhi. How Coal Occurs The coal, Jurassic in age, occurs in three economically identifiable seams designated No. 2, 3, and 7. Seams are 100-250 m below the surface. Reserves from this economic zone were not quantified, but Superintendent Li indicated that there was enough mapped out to sustain the expanded production rate for over 20 years. Below the Jurassic coal is another possible economic zone, a Permocarboniferous coal lying 400-600 m below the surface. Little development drilling has been conducted to ascertain its potential. The Jurassic beds are relatively flat and coal quality is reportedly one of the best in China. Heat content of the coal runs around 33.5 MJ/kg and the ash content is less than 10%. In some areas, it is less than 7%. Coal preparation is simple and involves a washing and screening separation into four principal size fractions. Washed coal is stored in one of six storage silos, each with 4000-t capacity. Mining the No. 2 Seam Since startup, primary production has been derived from the No. 2 seam. The coal is relatively hard and is topped by a hard cement-like conglomerate. These factors, coupled with an average thickness between 4 to 6 m, precluded the use of conventional longwall techniques, according to mine engineers. Although one of the primary variables in the calculation of the flowing bottom-hole pressure in gas wells from surface measurements is the temperature at any point and its distribution in the flow-string, only few experimental data are available in the literature and little attention has been given to analysis of the problem. Virtually all of the recently published methods of calculating flowing bottom-hole pressures depend on the assumption that either the temperature is constant at some average value or that the variation is linear with depth. The purposes of this work are to analyze the problem theoretically and to verify the analysis by comparison with experimental data so that practical problems in the analysis of the behavior of gas wells can be solved with greater accuracy, reliability, and ease. MATHEMATICAL OUTLINE OF PROBLEM Assuming that: 1. The mass velocity and chemical composition of the gas stream are constant and in normal gas well operations, the change in linear velocity in the entire flow-string is trivial, 2. The product of the density and heat capacity of the gas is constant, 3. No horizontal temperature gradient exists in the gas stream, 4. Net flow of heat by conduction within the formation and in the gas stream in the vertical direction is trivial in magnitude and can be neglected, 5. The regional vertical geothermal gradient is constant, and 6. The temperature of the gas entering the borehole is constant, and equal to that of the reservoir, a set of two simultaneous, linear partial differential equations with appropriate boundary conditions was derived to describe the temperature distribution in the gas stream and the surrounding formation. These equations were solved by operational techniques for the distribution of temperature in the gas stream. The resulting integrals were evaluated numerically on an IBM 604 at the Machine Accounting Div. of the Railroad Commission of Texas. Streak brownish black, grayish, olive-green, a little shining. Opaque. Comp. -A uranate of uranyl, lead, usually thorium (or zirconium), often the metals of the lanthanum and yttrium groups; also containing the gases nitrogen, helium and argon, in varying amounts up to 2'6 p. c. Calcium and water (essential?) are present in small quantities; iron also, but only as an impurity. The relation between the bases varies widely and no definite for- mula can be given. The work presented in this paper investigates the influence of non-ideal detonation characteristics related to the blasthole diameter, base emulsion sensitivity (micro-balloon sensitised versus unsensitised) and percent emulsion on the explosive shock energy available to break rock using ANFOemulsion blends. A series of theoretical equal powder factor bench blasting patterns with hole diameters of 127mm (5”), 140mm (5.5”), 152mm (6”) and 165mm (6.5”) are compared to assess the non-ideal confined shock-state work energies. The Non-Ideal Shock Energy Factor (NSEF), which is the available shock energy per cubic meter of blasted material (MJ/m3) or kilocalories per cubic yard (kcal/yd3), is used to compare the different blasting patterns charged with a range of ANFO-emulsion blends from zero to 50% emulsion.
