The enactment of the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act (SMCRA) in August 1977 addressed subsidence resulting from underground mines, in addition to creating the requirements for reclamation of surface coal mines. Subsidence control regulations pursuant to SMCRA were initially promulgated in March 1979. Several revisions have since been made. In addition, due to court challenges some regulations have been remanded and others are still on appeal. In the meantime the Secretary has agreed to initiate rulemaking on some issues. It is yet to be determined how the prohibition of certain areas from surface coal mining operations under Section 522(e) of the Act applies to subsidence. This presentation discusses the status of the regulations and issues related to or affecting the subsidence regulations.

Documented case histories are studied where data were found on the initial collapse of the overburden above the longwall panels. Under this scenario, the most controlled conditions exist for assessing the span capacity of the overburden (i.e., before failure the roof spans to fin coal abutments on two to all four sides). In an attempt to correlate theory to field observations, data are used on the overburden lithology, and the depth, width, and face advance of the panel, as well as, the subsidence conditions noted on the surface. The subsidence measured on the surface is used to determine when complete failure in the over- burden rock has occurred.

No presente trabalho foi avaliado, por meio de ensaios dinamométricos em um motor de combustão interna, o desempenho dos anéis de compressão em diferentes materiais de camisa de cilindro, sob alto regime de carga. Dois materiais foram utilizados nas camisas: Ferro fundido cinzento e um revestimento eletrodepositado de Níquel carbeto de silício. Os ensaios tiveram duração de quatro horas com cada configuração anéis/camisa. Parâmetros de análise, como a rugosidade média (Ra) e o aspecto superficial foram aferidos antes e após os testes. Os resultados apontam que o primeiro anel ensaiado na camisa revestida de Ni-SiC apresentou maior redução de Ra na condição estudada.

The extractive industries addition to the International Valuation Standards (IVS) is scheduled for publication in the next edition of the IVS book in January 2005. This will provide guidance for valuation of minerals and petroleum industry assets of all types for all appraisal uses. It will provide asset valuation support to the International Financial Reporting Standards for the stock markets of the world, and a global umbrella standard which can be supplemented for local needs by institutes and regulators. This paper discusses implementation of the IVS within the minerals industry and important issues that the industry should confront.

Several years ago, Reddy and Blander presented upriori model for calculating the sulfide capacity of binary silicate melts. It is modified now to apply to CaO-AlO 1.5 melts at different temperatures and compositions. Our predictions are in very good agreement with the available experimental data. From a comparison of binary calcium aluminate and calcium silicate systems, higher sulfide capacities are obtained in aluminate systems. The sulfur can be removed from hot metal more effectively by adding aluminate melts.

During the operation of a mineral processing plant, the unit processes are investigated by analyzing the data extracted by means of stream sampling. The data structure is identical to the time series form. Data analysis is a crucial step in understanding the plant performance. To control the plant performance efficiently, it is very important to avoid sampling errors, which is impossible. However, it is possible to minimize these errors. The factors influencing these errors are divided into two categories: material properties illustrating its heterogeneity, and sampler features. The purpose of this paper is to study the influence of the material composition variation on sampling errors, and to compare our evaluation method with that of Gy. Note that the stream mass flowrate is assumed to be constant during the sampling process.

The Bureau of Mines, through its Minerals Availability Program (MAP), investigates the mineral supply potential of the United States and market economy countries (MEC's) for a number of minerals considered essential to the U.S. industrial base. Major activities include identification of important mines and mineral deposits, estimation of their mineral resources and production costs, and availability and sensitivity analyses. Products include data print-outs of geological and engineering information, discounted- cash-flow rate of return (DCFROR) analyses of individual mining operations, commodity availability appraisals, and analytic services to Government agencies. These products are used in assessing the mineral supply position of the United States: in setting priorities for research aimed at reducing production costs and minimizing adverse environ- mental impacts and regulatory compliance costs of mining and mineral processing operations; and in formulating and evaluating Government policies that affect minerals. Bureau MAP data and analyses have been provided to the executive and legislative branches to aid in consideration of trade, tax, and stockpile policy issues. A study of the economic potential of selected seabed mineral resources supports the regulatory responsibilities of the Department of the Interior in the U.S. Exclusive Economic Zone. Analytic studies of mineral project viability, industry competitiveness, and import dependencies were also undertaken for, or in cooperation with, U.S. and foreign government agencies, industry and trade organizations, and international lending institutions.

Highland Valley Copper (HVC) is a large open pit copper mine in the southern interior of British Columbia. Machine guidance technology using GPS has been utilized at the mine since 1996 for blast hole drill navigation and since 2000 for shovel and dozer navigation. Since 1997, rock recognition has been part of the drilling process. This allowed the mine to develop a Mine to Mill strategy using the rock hardness information from drill monitoring systems to both refine drilling and blasting parameters as well as downstream crushing and grinding strategies. Although this preliminary effort has been very successful at HVC, the current intent is to gain further benefits through better use of existing information while also deriving an enhanced data set from monitoring production drills. In the latter case, the objective is to acquire and process drill variables in such a manner as to permit more detailed definition of rock mass characteristics. The subsequent focus will be to use the derived geotechnical and geological information as part of a practical process to more prescriptively blast the rock mass. Through the definition of domains based on drill monitored derived rock mass properties, the intent will be to enhance blast outcomes that lead to optimized downstream (from blasting through to concentration) processes in a more proactive and timely manner. This paper examines a proposed approach to be able to derive more accurate and consistent rock mass properties from production drilling. In addition, the discussion will identify potential benefits to be gained from process improvements that result in enhanced productivities, and crushing and grinding optimisation due to blasting strategies that are more closely matched to identify rock mass characteristics.

Este trabalho tem como objetivo a avaliação do processo de desfosforação de ferro-gusa tomando como base os resultados obtidos na análise química da mistura inicial e escória final, uma vez que as condições finais do metal são determinadas por sua escória. As misturas utilizadas são a base de CaO-FeO e a temperatura de tratamento foi de 1400ºC. Inicialmente o estudo será realizado usando os modelos da literatura e posteriormente com uso de ferramentas de termodinâmica computacional. Será também determinado um modelo para prever a eficiência destas misturas.

O impacto de alguns elementos microligantes no tamanho de grão e nas propriedades mecânicas obtidas em diferentes rotas de processamento foi estudado neste trabalho para uma laminação de barras de aços especiais, special bar quality em inglês, SBQ. Esse estudo compreende as etapas iniciais da metodologia para o desenvolvimento de um modelo capaz de prever o comportamento da microestrutura e as propriedades mecânicas obtidas em processos de laminação de barras, que é pouco difundido para aços microligados. Foram testadas duas variações de aços microligados, com diferentes percentuais de Nb e Ti A rota de processamento mostrou um papel fundamental para a obtenção de melhores propriedades mecânicas nos aços testados – um aprimoramento considerável foi observado quando o material foi laminado seguido uma sequência termo-controlada.

IN January last I published in the Engineering and Mining Journal a table giving, with a considerable degree of accuracy, the production of anthracite coal for the year 1874. At that time it was impossible to give any correct estimate of the production of bituminous coal, for the returns I had been able to secure from such distant and scattered districts were not always forwarded punctually, and the work of -obtaining anything like a true estimate of the coal mined in districts from which I was unable to obtain official returns was both laborious and tedious. As will be seen from the detailed reports furnished herewith, I have succeeded in obtaining tolerably accurate returns of 20,093,704 tons; and upon careful revision by numerous well-informed local authorities, my first estimate of the amount of coal not officially returned to me has grown very considerably; indeed, as I get more information on the subject I find that our bituminous coal production greatly exceeds the amount we have been accustomed to hear it placed at, aggregating as it does, 26,465,704 tons. Mr. Andrew Roy, State Inspector of Mines for Ohio, has reported the production of Ohio at 4,168,445 tons, while his first estimates were but 3,820,000 tons; and similarly, in other cases, the more full the returns direct from the mines the more incorrect do I find all previous reports. I am able now to furnish, not an accurate statement, indeed, but by far the most full and reliable one that has yet been published of our coal production. The amount of labor involved in obtaining this admittedly imperfect report has been simply enormous. In the following tabular statement it will be perceived that Pennsylvania produces nearly one-half of all the bituminous coal mined * Since this paper was read fuller reports from some of the States whose production had been "estimated" have modified the figures given. The most serious error is in California, which produces probably 200,000 tons less than these figures. Oregon and Washington territories also yield smaller amounts than here reported; but these reductions are probably fully compensated by fuller reports from other States that were here underestimated. The correct aggregate amount will not vary much from that here given. Early in 1876 I will be able to give a fuller and more accurate report for the year 1875.

Declining Productivity Index, as considered herein, is a productivity index that has a substantially and consistently decreasing value when measured over a period of a few hours. If not recognized, it may be interpreted as representing an unsettled or unstable condition in a producing well. It forms the basis of a number of predictions as to future performance compared with the performance of wells in which the productivity index does not decline. The nost important of these are that: (I) the rate of oil production will decline more rapidly, (2) the gas-oil ratio will usually increase abnormally, (3) the amount of water ultimately produced will be negligible, if any, (4) stop-cocking will increase current production and decrease gas-oil ratio. When such relative well performance is indicated, it follows that certain reservoir performance and operating practices may be anticipated: (I) disappointing recovery, (2) longer natural flow, (3) no active water drive, (4) better evaluation of acidizing, shooting and reworking, (5) intermittent operation of wells, (6) smaller pumping equipment required. It is significant that the basis of these important predictions is bottom-hole pressure tests that can be made immediately after completion of the wells. Introduction "'Productivity index" is the number of barrels of oil produced per day per pound per square inch of differential pressure between the reservoir and the bottom of the well. "Declining Productivity Index," as considered herein, is a productivity index that has a substantially and consistently decreasing value when measured over a period of a few hours. Productivity index can be determined only when the rate of production can be stabilized. In most wells the rate of production and bottom-hole pressure are easily stabilized to give a constant productivity index for a period of many hours. A few produce so erratically as to preclude probability of an acceptable test in the usual sense. A satisfactory productivity index can be determined in some wells only by gauging the production accurately by hours, measuring the bottom-hole pressure continuously, and from these data calculating the productivity index for successive hours. Such figures frequently will have a decreasing value—that is, a declining productivity index—and when plotted on double. logarithmic cross-section paper with productivity index as ordinate and time as abscissa will be a straight-line curve. The angle between the curve and the abscissa is referred to as the rate of decline. Declining productivity index may appear to be the result of change in permeability to oil due to decreasing saturation of oil and increasing saturation of gas in the reservoir. It is possible that such is in fact the cause, but if so, more is involved than merely relative saturation of oil and gas. The Castle Dome copper deposit is of the porphyry type and occurs in a body of quartz monzonite intruded into the pre-Cambrian formations and possibly into the lower part of Paleozoic limestones. The hypogene sulphide minerals include pyrite, chalcopyrite, and a little molybdenite, sphalerite, and galena. Pyrite and chalcopyrite are disseminated or occur in small closely spaced veins. The hypogene mineralization shows distinct zoning in the distribution of pyrite and chalcopyrite, so that the mineralized area can be subdivided into pyritc and chalcopyrite zones. Supergene enrichment, though not extensive, played an important part in the formation of the ore body, the chalcopyritc zone being the pro-tore. Several thin, gently dipping, diabase sills occur in the mineralized area, and the copper content of the rock in and near these sills is substantially higher than average. The formation of the ore body was caused by the combined effects of three forces: I. Zoning of the hypogene mineralization, 2. Richer copper metallization associated with the diabase sills, and 3. Supergene enrichment. Introduction The Castle Dome copper deposit is about 5 miles west of Miami, Arizona, and about 3 miles west of the Miami-Inspiration ore body. The Castle Dome open-pit mine is on the south flank of Porphyry Mountain, a prominent landmark of the region. In 1941 the deposit was being explored by the Miami Copper Co., but the exploration program was cut short when the decision was made to develop the property as a war project. The Castle Dome Copper Co., Inc., was organized as a wholly owned subsidiary of the Miami Copper Co., and arrangements were made with Defense Plant Corp. for developing and equipping the mine and for construction of a concentrating plant. Construction and development work was begun in January 1942, and milling operations started June so, 1943. Since that date, the mine has been in continuous operation by the Castle Dome Copper Co, under a lease agreement with Defense Plant Corp. producing copper at an average rate of 4,000,000 lb per month. To January I, 1946 the total production amounted to 121,088,000 lb of copper,4,271 oz of gold, and 211,755 oz of silver. A detailed study of the copper deposit and the surrounding area was undertaken by the U. S. Geological Survey in June 1943. Other members of the Survey participating in the work were C. M. Gilbert, G. L. Quick, and J. P. Albers. The results of this work will be published as a comprehensive report by the Geological Survey. The value of Alabama's nonfuel mineral production in 1982 was $299.4 million, a decrease of $14.4 million from that of 1981; the decrease continued a downward trend that started in 1980. Output of most nonfuel minerals declined; cement, crushed stone, lime, sand and gravel, and clays were the major commodities produced in the State. Despite the decrease in mineral output, Alabama led the Nation in the production of crushed marble; was second in bauxite; third in ferroalloys and oyster shell; fourth in bentonite and dimension marble; fifth in common clay. fire clay, and kaolin; and sixth in masonry cement and lime.

This paper presents the ingredients composing a type of oil-base mud that has been successfully used in drilling oil horizons in California, the effect of ingredient concentrations on physical properties, methods of handling at the well and possible advantages of a waterless drilling fluid with excellent plastering properties. INTRODUCTION AN oil-base mud is a rotary drilling fluid in which oil has been substituted for water as the principal liquid ingredient. In recent years such a mud has been developed and used successfully for drilling the oil horizons of wells in various California fields. There are several types of oil-base mud, but only the type that is currently used to any appreciable extent will be considered at this time. The oil-base drilling-mud compositions used by Shell Oil Company, Incorporated have been covered by several patent applications on which patents are expected to issue at an early date. The purpose of this paper is to present data on the fundamental design of the mud; the ingredients used and their specifications; the effect of ingredient concentration on physical properties; the selection of the proper mud; the facilities needed for handling the mud; and a general discussion [oil] drilling with oil-base mud. In view of the early stage of development of oil-base mud, the great number of variables, and the almost unlimited possible combinations of these variables, which in turn require extensive laboratory study, there are certain irregularities and omissions in the data presented here. However, it is believed that sufficient data are at hand to permit a fairly complete analysis of the characteristics of oil-base muds. In view of the excellent plastering properties of oil-base mud when properly proportioned, its use should: (I) minimize the possibility of impairing the natural flow potentialities of the producing horizon such as that resulting from infiltration of water from water-base muds; (2) permit smaller clearances for setting liners, since the mud sheath has no appreciable thickness; (3) eliminate the possibility of clogging the perforations of the liner with thick mud sheath; (4) facilitate the removal of the mud sheath from the walls of the hole, for its mud sheath has no appreciable strength; (5) assist in drilling through formations, such as "heaving shale," where water wetting appears to be a source of difficulty. (6) permit cores to be obtained without contamination from drilling water. A series of dilute Fe-Co alloy specimens were prepared from zone-melted iron. The iron used was given ten floating-zone passes in purified hydrogen. Alloying was accomplished by plating a gradient of metallic cobalt onto a 1/4-in.-diam bar of material from a pure plating bath. The deposit was radioac-tively tagged by a small addition of co80 to the plating bath. Alloy homogenization was accomplished by passing an additional floating-zone pass through the plated section of the bar. The final concentration gradient achieved was from residual to about 1000 ppm (0.1 pct) added Co. After homogenization, the bar was swaged to 0.057 in. wire and cut to tensile specimen blanks 1-1/16 in. long. Each specimen was counted in a well-type scintillation counter. The concentration of cobalt was computed by combining the normalized specimen counting rate with the known weight (measured to the nearest 0.01 mg) of cobalt added during plating. Fig. 1 shows the cobalt gradient obtained, exclusive of residual cobalt which was estimated by neutron-activation analysis to be approximately 50 ppm. Results of recrystallization for 1 hr at 750°, 700°, 650°, and 600°C with specimens containing 40, 170, 470, and 870 ppm added Co are shown in Figs. 2, 3, 4, and 5. Recrystallization was accomplished in a dynamic vacuum of less than 1 x 10 torr. The specimens were mounted and polished parallel to the swaging direction. The recrystallization re- sults show a radical coarsening of structure with increasing cobalt concentration. The coarsest structure obtained was at the 470-ppm level (at all recrystallization temperatures) with a slight grain refinement at the 870-ppm level shown. A more normal solid-solution effect is seen in Fig. 5 (60OoC, 1 hr) where the only specimen completely recrystallized is the one containing 47 ppm Co. Since the possibility existed that some atmosphere-contamination phenomenon might be responsible for the observed results the recrystallization series was repeated using sealed quartz capsules. These were filled with purified argon which was gettered during heat treatment on metallic titanium included in the capsules. The results obtained were essentially the same as shown. Another identical alloy was made using a 5-mm-diam bar of Westinghouse Puron. Specimen preparation and recrystallization treatment were also as described. The results obtained (see Table I) were somewhat erratic. Some coarsening in structure does appear at the highest cobalt concentrations. There is no apparent relationship between the coarse, columnar, directionally solidified structure of the as-melted bars and any of the recrystallized grain structures observed, all of which are much finer than the former structure. A recrystallization process can be most simply described as one of homogeneous nucleation of recrystallized grains in a cold-worked matrix followed by more or less uniform growth of the strain free grain into the cold-worked material.' An impurity element may influence one or both of these processes. Aust and utter' have shown that impurities strongly influence grain boundary mobility in lead. Este trabalho tem como objetivo apresentar os resultados do procedimento de geração de energia elétrica adicional a geração econômica na CTE2 com gás natural, visando a redução de custo no grupo CSN.O estudo foi efetuado através da avaliação dos preços do mercado de curto prazo de energia elétrica e análise do processo de geração da planta, aos quais permitiram diagnosticar as melhores praticas e definir a melhor configuração operacional.Os resultados apresentados foram significativos para as condições de operação, o que representa redução do custo de energia elétrica para o grupo CSN e aumento da segurança operacional da planta da CTE2.

Uma maneira de detectar macro inclusões é através de testes ultrassônicos, embora a análise e a interpretação dos resultados dos testes sejam difíceis de entender. Com os resultados da inspeção, temos informações sobre a localização das macro inclusões e, portanto, sua distribuição ao longo do material. No entanto, estabelecer critérios para classificar o material quanto à sua pureza tem sido uma tarefa difícil. O presente trabalho visa estabelecer uma ferramenta de análise de dados a ser utilizada para controle de qualidade de materiais. Os resultados mostram uma viabilidade estatística e metalúrgica de aplicar este modelo analítico para avaliar o nível de pureza dos aços laminados a quente.

Success in mining demands the creative application of equipment, systems and processes to the unique needs of each mineral deposit, market and, though often overlooked, the culture of the individual business. In recent years, domestic coal mining companies have become more attentive to the contribution safety and loss control programs have on their financial results. Although most have adopted fairly conventional safety programs, some have created systems and processes tailored to their unique circumstances. While each coal mining business must consider the typical risks inherent to our industry, excellence in safety is most likely achieved when a safety program is customized to meet the needs of the individual business.
