Neste trabalho buscou-se avaliar o consumo de sucatas com elevador teor de enxofre, em carro torpedo, sem afetar a qualidade final do produto, objetivando a recirculação de um coproduto gerado internamente e aumento do rendimento de gusa distribuído para Aciaria. A sucata em questão é gerada a partir do beneficiamento da escória resultante do processo de raspagem após dessulfuração do ferro gusa em panela (KR) e do procedimento de limpeza dos carros torpedos. Foi avaliada a operacionalidade da adição, riscos envolvidos no processo e redução da geração com reaproveitamento direto no processo. Os resultados mostraram que existe viabilidade técnica e ganhos financeiros significativos

THE purpose of this study was to measure the vapor pressure of silver as the first step in the determination of activities in silver alloys and to test the limitations of the method adopted. In order to work at low pressures, below 2x10-2 mm of mercury, the orifice effusion technique was employed. To shorten the time of collection of silver from the atomic beam, radioactive silver (Ag110) was used as a tracer. The rate of effusion of a monatomic vapor from an "ideal" orifice, where the thickness of the orifice edge is negligible compared with the orifice diameter, can be readily calculated from the kinetic theory of gases, G = vM a p/v2pRT where G is the weight of material effusing from the orifice per unit time; p is the vapor pressure at oven temperature, T; R is the gas constant; M is the molecular weight of the vapor; and a is the orifice area. Consolidating constants and expressing as the weight of material effusing from the orifice in a period of time, t, (5.83)(10-2) (vM) (a) (t) (p)/vT where GT is total weight of monatomic vapor effused (g); M is molecular weight of the effusing tracer vapor; a is orifice area (cm2); t is time of effusion (sec); p is vapor pressure of effusing material (mm of Hg); and T is oven temperature (OK). The vapor effuses from the orifice in a hemispherical pattern, and the intensity of the beam in any direction is given by the cosine distribution law.' Considering this, the weight of effused material can be calculated from the amount of material passing through a circular collimator intersecting the beam. If such a collimator is in a plane parallel to the plane of the orifice and with center on the normal to the orifice center, GT = G?/1-cos2? = G?/sin2? where G? is the weight of effused material passing through the collimator, and 0 is one half the apex angle of the cone defined by the collimator circumference and the orifice center. Discussion of the paper of DR. L. EDELEANU, presented at the Pittsburgh meeting, October, 1914, and printed in Bulletin No. 93, September, 1914, pp. 2313 to 2332. F. W. BUSHONG,* Pittsburgh, Pa.-This process of extraction is particularly advantageous in the case of Roumanian oil, on account of its high aromatic content. I have prepared a paper, which will appear probably next month in the Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry, describing a series of two-degree fractions of oil from the Nowata field in Oklahoma. I have made extractions with liquid sulphur dioxide in accordance with Dr. Edeleanu's method, and found that the Oklahoma oils, for instance the kerosene fractions, are purified in this way, although the quantity taken out does not at all compare with that taken out of the Roumanian oil. I have made careful analyses of separate fractions, before and after extraction, and they show a very distinct fractional separation-. I like the distinction, brought out by Dr. Day in previous discussions, in regard to oils, rather than oil, and his beautiful illustration of fractionation. Just as fuller's earth, and other clays, will enable us to obtain lower-boiling fractional portions of the oils, and eventually retain a residuum which is hard to get rid of, or to remove, so there is an advantage to be gained by the use of a reagent which begins at the other end by taking out these last constituents first, namely, ozone. I have also analyzed the ozonides and they are derivatives of hydrocarbons very much poorer. in hydrogen than we have heretofore supposed. Similar results have been obtained with Roumanian, Russian, and Italian petroleums. Furthermore, I have prepared ozonides from a fraction of Oklahoma oils, both before and after ex-' traction with liquid sulphur dioxide, and found that the ozonide obtained from the extract is the same as that precipitated out of the original oils. In other words, the residual substance, which the fuller's earth retains, is the one first thrown down by the use of ozone, but it may also be extracted by liquid sulphur dioxide- and be thus separated in apparently unaltered condition. The analysis of this extract corresponds to the formula C15H20, which is surprising, since it is lower in hydrogen content than we have been in the habit of considering among the constituents of our oils. The extract was probably contaminated with other hydro-carbons, but I think it is unquestionable that we must look for hydro-carbons in petroleum which correspond to a formula at least -as low in hydrogen as C15H2o, and possibly even as low as C15H16.

The construction of Norris Dam, built by the Tennessee Valley Authority on the Clinch River, a tributary of the Tennessee River, involved the production of coarse and fine aggregate for approximately 1,000,000 cu. yd. of concrete. A hammer-mill plant for the manufacture of sand from quarried rock was indicated as the most economical method of providing this material. The abrasive character of the feed as compared to the average hammer-mill feed made it necessary to control operations rather closely, and this resulted in the accumulation of many data hearing on production and maintenance. This paper will deal only with three specific sets of data, accompanied by such general information as may be necessary to explain the conditions under which they were obtained and followed by discussions on the relation of silica content to hammer wear, comparative costs of slugger and stirrup hammers, and comparative costs of tool-steel and manganese-steel grate bars. Coarse Aggregate Aggregate for the concrete poured at Norris Dam came from a dolomite quarry within 2000 ft. of the west abutment of the dam. Geologically this rock is known as a Knox dolomite. In this ?paper practical solidification of anodes containing nickel, arsenic, antimony and bismuth is compared with the equilibrium? diagrams and kinetic ?factors. In order to clarify the distribution of the impurity elements in the anode the structures were studied after the solidification and also after the electrolysis of anodes. This examination was carried out with optical microscope, scanning electron microscope and electrochemical measurements. All the nickel is remaining metallic in the copper matrix during the solidification and therefore nickel is dissolved in the electrolysis at all oxygen contents, when the nickel content is 0.25 wt-% or less in the anode. The practical .solidification mechanism of the anodes, when the nickel content exceeds 0.25 wt-%, proceeds by the crystallization of nickel oxides. In oxygen containing copper anodes nickel oxide is verified to crystallize together with antimony in certain conditions and to form a micaceous compound (3Cu2O?4NiO?Sb2O5), which may build up a very harmful floating slime in the electrolyte. Arsenic is strongly enriched along the phase boundaries in oxygen free copper anodes. An intermetallic compound Cu3As is formed when the amount of arsenic in the anode. exceeds 0.7 wt-%. This compound is more noble than the copper matrix. This means 'that a selective dissolution of copper-arsenic compounds takes place. The copper matrix dissolves more strongly than the grain boundaries. The solidification structures of oxygen free bismuth containing copper anodes show clearly the influence of bismuth. Thin bismuth films which are less .noble than the metallic copper matrix, are formed during the solid1ficatton process. As a result of this the?grain boundaries are dissolved faster than the copper matrix.

Vibration exposure at workplaces is generally multi-axial. The health effects of vibration exposure also likely depend on the vibration direction. Therefore, there is a wide interest in the simulation of multi-axial vibration in laboratory experiments. Advances in technology have led to the development of a new 3-D test system for studying hand-transmitted vibration exposure and health effects. The purposes of this paper are to introduce the system and to present the results of its preliminary evaluations. Test System As shown in Figure 1, the system is basically composed of three vibration generators, a multi-axis vibration control system, instrumented handle, handle fixture, and shaker-fixture linkages (stingers). [ ] Figure 2 shows the array of three vibration generators (MB Dynamics, Energizer BLACK-500 lbs) and their associated support bases and foundation developed by MB Dynamics (Cleveland, USA), which create the 3-axis simultaneous motion. These electrodynamic exciters are powered by power amplifiers which provide current proportional to the analog drive signal from a controller. The controller (JAGUAR Multi-Input/Multi-Output closed-loop vibration controller) was provided by Spectral Dynamics, San Jose, California, USA). NIOSH-designed instrumented handle was equipped on the system.

"Summary: Fibroblast proliferation and enhancement of collagen synthesis are key steps in the development and progression of pulmonary fibrosis. The current investigation presents a fibroblast proliferation assay to detect the release of competence factors from pneumocytes. The specific objective of this study was to define cell culture conditions for fibroblasts that would allow selective detection of competence factors in test media. The results indicate the following: (a) fibroblasts should be cultured for 2 days in plasma-free medium rather than 2% plasma to assure complete quiescence; (b) 1% plasma was optimum for producing progression activity for the bioassay of a competence factor, while 0.5% plasma did not produce sufficient progression activity (yielding false negatives) and 2% plasma often contained significant competence activity (yielding false positives); and (c) fresh plasma should be used since the progression activity of plasma was adversely affected by freezing and thawing. Under these conditions, this bioassay can be employed with either rat or human lung fibroblasts to detect competence factors such as platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), at levels as low as 25 ng/ml.Fibrotic lung disease, as a consequence of occupational exposure to silica dust. is characterized by the development of concentric hyalinized nodular lesions in the lung and the progressive loss of pulmonary diffusion capacity. Proliferation of pulmonary fibroblasts and enhanced synthesis of collagen by these pneumocytes have been shown to be key steps in the development of chronic silicosis ( 1 ). The regulation of lung fibroblast proliferation by cytokines released from alveolar macrophages may be an important pathogenetic mechanism in the development of the fibrotic process (2). Some cytokines stimulate fibroblast proliferation by activating specific phases of the cell cycle (3,4). In particular, platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) promotes fibroblast proliferation by inducing the movement of quiescent (G0 ) cells into the G1 phase of the cell cycle (5). Insulin-like growth factor (IGF) and transforming growth factor-P (TGF-P). on the other hand, regulate the rate of transition of fibroblasts from G 1 into the S phase (5,6). These two classes of cytokines have been termed competence and progression factors, respectively. One approach used to examine the release of cytokines from macrophages is the fibroblast proliferation assay in which quiescent fibroblasts are exposed to culture supematants from macrophages exposed to various stimuli. In most of these assays, the supernatant contains fetal calf serum (FCS), which provides the competence factor(s) necessary to facilitate the proliferation of fibroblasts (7-9). Recently, a fibroblast proliferation assay using platelet-poor .plasma [lacking competence factor(s)] as a substitute for FCS bas been described (I 0, 11 ). In this assay, the release of a competence-inducing PDGF-like growth factor from rat and human macrophages can be distinguished from other cytokines that act as progression factors."

As empresas de classe mundial, para atingir a excelência, buscam inovações para maximizar a utilização dos seus ativos. Para estas empresas, os departamentos de manutenção assumem uma função estratégica e a utilização de metodologias como a Manutenção Centrada em Confiabilidade (MCC) tem contribuído muito para a obtenção de um desempenho positivo em seu sistema produtivo. Apesar das inúmeras vantagens da aplicação da MCC, identificou-se uma oportunidade de melhoria nesta metodologia, na etapa de aplicação do diagrama de decisão para escolha das tarefas de manutenção. Pois é dentro deste contexto que se insere o presente trabalho, que busca consolidar o processo de implementação da MCC, com a introdução de melhorias na etapa mencionada, voltadas principalmente para a sua utilização na indústria siderúrgica. Inicialmente, apresenta-se uma abordagem sobre os conceitos e métodos empregados na MCC tradicional. Em seguida, as melhorias propostas foram detalhadas junto com um estudo de caso, onde a MCC, já contendo os métodos elaborados neste trabalho, foi aplicada em uma empresa siderúrgica, sendo que os resultados obtidos demonstraram a adequação desta proposta às necessidades deste ramo industrial.

"PULMONARY ALVEOLAR macrophages (PAM) protect the lungs by providing a first line of defense against inhaled foreign debris and bacteria. In this role PAM phagocytize foreign matter, secrete enzymes that augment microbial killing and digestion, and produce reactive oxygen me-tabolites (2, 3, 18, 19, 22, 26). However, in addition to this antibacterial function, PAM participate in a diversity of functions, such as tissue repair, lipoprotein metabolism, and immunoregulatory activities (11, 22).Studies have suggested the existence of a heterogeneous population of PAM with respect to immunologic function, enzyme release, phagocytosis, morphological characteristics, expression of membrane receptors, ad-herence, and superoxide (O2•) release (4-7, 10, 16, 21, 23, 28). This heterogeneity has been observed by analyz¬ing subfractions of PAM separated by cell density frac-tionation. For example, using guinea pig PAM, Dauber et al. (7) showed heterogeneity in cell density and size, morphological characteristics, and cytochemical properties, whereas Holian and co-workers (16) reported variations in migration, chemotaxis, O2• release, and pinocytosis among subfractions collected. Similarly, O'Neill et al. (21) observed functional heterogeneity in rat PAM with regard to phagocytosis, O2 • release, and lysosomal enzyme activity.Several investigations have reported a correlation between PAM activity and cell volume. Most studies have shown that O2 release from PAM increased with decreasing cell size (15, 21, 25), although Bielefeldt Ohmann and Babiuk (4) reported a decreasing trend. However, Gallin (13) has suggested that significant variability may even exist within density-defined or cell-volume subfractions that could lead to misinterpretation of results concerning PAM heterogeneity.A better understanding of the heterogeneity in O2 production may be obtained by using single cell meas-urements to evaluate whether functionally distinct sub-populations actually do exist. As such, the present study was designed to examine heterogeneity in O2 • release from single PAM using a recently developed electrooptical technique (8). The initial oxygen metabolite, O2•, produced by NADPH oxidase at the surface of the plasma membrane, was measured by quantifying the reduction of nitro blue tetrazolium (NBT I to a diformazan precipitate. Measurements were made from video recordings of individual cells stimulated by their adherence to the bottom of a culture dish. The cell volume and degree of spreading also were determined directly from the same video recordings, and the data were correlated with the initial rate and maximum amount of diformazan produced by the same cell."

Copper remains one of the most sought-after metals in the industry. Tennantite (Cu12As4S13) and tetrahedrite (Cu12Sb4S13) that occur in pyrite copper, copper-zinc and polymetallic ores are an additional reserve for increasing technological parameters of flotation. Pyrite mass (85% and more) has similar flotation properties to other sulfide minerals, and imperfection of reagent regime is a common problem that occurs during quality copper concentrate processing. Due to tennantite's and chalcopyrite's differences in flotation properties with butyl xanthate at pH > 10, tennantite often reports to the flotation tails. Hight alkalinity of the medium increases the oxidation level of sulfide minerals, thus increasing the concentration of S2O3 2-, SO3 2- SO4 2-. At processing facilities in the Russian Federation, the concentration of thiosulfate ions in pulp is in the range of 0.5 to 1.5 g/l and higher, which leads to a decrease in flotation activity of the tennantite. The effect of butyl xanthate (as standard), thionocarbamate, dithiophosphate and M-TF (a mixture of dithiophosphate and thionocarbamate) on monomineral (tennantite and pyrite) flotation in the presence of sodium thiosulfate was studied. The variable parameters of the "thiosulfate-collector" flotation complex were thiosulfate concentration (100-900); pH (8-12,5). The scientific methods included contact angle for hydration assessment; TEM for surface studies; UV spectroscopy and iodometric titration for solubility control. Comprehensive studies have established a connection between the concentration of thiosulfate ions and tennantite flotation selectivity. Flotation activity of tennantite is higher at pH 8 with a thiosulfate concentration under 300 mg/l. Pyrite remains active with butyl xanthate under the same conditions. TEM images of the surface films of the collectors on pyrite were acquired at pH 8. The MTF provides the biggest difference in adsorption, wettability and flotation activity between tennantite and pyrite at pH 8 and thiosulfate concentration under 300 mg/l, in comparison with butyl xanthate. The results of the research will be applied to improve selective reagent regimes of tennantite minerals flotation. A Usiminas, como empresa de ponta na produção de aços planos, visando manter e ampliar a sua liderança na produção e comercialização destes produtos, investiu uma elevada soma na modernização de sua linha de produção. Em 2012 foi instalado na Usina de Cubatão, o moderno Laminador de Tiras a Quente e, em agosto de 2013, foi dada a partida operacional da nova linha de Decapagem 03. O objetivo da nova Decapagem 03 é agregar valor em seu portfólio de produtos, complementando assim a nova linha de produtos ofertados com novas dimensões e qualidades. A nova mistura de produtos laminados a quente atende maiores faixas de espessura e largura, além de oferecer tipos de aço não produzidos anteriormente. Este trabalho visa mostrar as principais etapas deste projeto, os benefícios e os resultados preliminares alcançados com a instalação da nova linha de produção. A Decapagem 03, por seu elevado nível tecnológico, é considerada "estado da arte em produção de bobinas decapadas", garantindo assim a obtenção de produtos de grande valor para os clientes, atendendo aos mais rigorosos padrões de qualidade.

A rotina operacional e os seus processos de validação e acompanhamento já estão consolidados no ambiente da Tecnologia da Informação (TI). No ambiente da Tecnologia de Automação (TA) estamos avançando lentamente, apesar da grande semelhança em vários processos, devido a dificuldades de adaptação dos controles principalmente no tocante aos tempos de resposta e atuação das equipes. Enquanto a TI atua na garantia da execução do tripé formado por confidencialidade (segurança), integridade (precisão dos dados) e disponibilidade, rigorosamente nessa sequência de prioridades (CID) [1], a TA procura atender às necessidades da produção, e inverte a prioridade para a disponibilidade (DIC). Daí o conflito inicial entre os modelos: demanda imediata ou planejamento detalhado das atividades dentro dos padrões de qualidade da TI, entretanto sem impactar nas metas operacionais. É tudo uma questão de visão e principalmente de gestão por processos! Quais as diretrizes comuns? Quais os processos similares? Encontrar os pontos de afinidade, alinhados com as expectativas dos gestores e com foco na disponibilidade, sem perder a integridade e confiabilidade dos dados é o desafio.

FOR some reason or other, Mine Taxation has never been a popular subject for discussion in meetings of this kind, and it has never received the study and consideration its importance demanded. By way of explanation, two reasons may be suggested. In the first place, the computation, adjustment, and final payment of taxes, have been looked upon in most cases as a Head Office chore. Secondly, since taxes represent an uncontrollable cost item, they have been treated as an added rather than an inclusive factor in calculating unit costs. Perhaps because I am half Irish, and therefore resent taxation of all kinds, perhaps because I am half Scotch, and am therefore concerned with the results, I have always taken a keen interest in this subject. Moreover, by some peculiar set of circumstances, I have been a participating party in many, perhaps I can say most, of the discussions on this subject that have taken place between the Governments and the representatives of this industry during the past thirty years. Looking backward, certain very definite impressions remain. Political considerations have never had any part in these discussions. Views have been exchanged upon the frankest possible basis, and, when we disagreed on some particular detail, we agreed to disagree, and followed through in harmony and? good faith. We, as an industry, have refrained from importuning and fault finding in ways that might be considered as petty or selfish, and it is only upon occasions such as this, where conditions necessitate action, that we lay our troubles before the powers that be. The Ontario Mining Tax Act was drafted by men who were earnest and practical as to purpose, and that Act has stood the test of time. It is, in. truth, a mode! Act, for it has been copied in its general clauses by both Quebec and the Dominion of Canada. We all know that, when a machine is running smoothly, we should leave it alone. The same is true of a well designed, easily applicable, taxation measure, and our present difficulty with respect to this Act arises out of an amendment made in 1916. In that year, you will remember, the Dominion imposed a wartime Income Tax Act. It was described as a wartime necessity and it was intimated t:1 at with the end of hostilities its application would be restricted and finally cancelled. The rate of taxation was modest, and when the Ontario Government was asked that the Dominion Income Tax be allowed as a deductible item, they readily acquiesced. This was looked upon as a temporary arrangement.

It is apparent that coal will play an increasingly important role in satisfying the nation's energy requirements for the remainder of this century. Both deep mining and surface mining will be practiced to develop known U.S. coal reserves, but until significant improvements in the productivity of deep mining emerge, surface mining is likely to be predominant. This report addresses the problems of coal extraction and surface mine reclamation in the 11-state Midwestern coal resource region, where surface stripping of high-sulfur, bituminous coal has been a well-developed industry for most of this century. Midwestern coal markets have declined in recent years. In part this is a result of widespread conversions to more convenient and (apparently) economical liquid and gaseous fuels, but the decline in Midwestern coal use is also attributable to the impact of current air pollution control regulations that prohibit emissions of sulfur oxides and particulate matter. A part of the regional demand for Midwestern coal has been transferred to the Northern Great Plains where extensive low-sulfur coal reserves are currently being developed.

The chloridizing roasting of ores is applied when metal sulfides and oxides are to be converted into soluble or volatile compounds. The chlorine required is either obtained from the admixed chlorides of sodium or calcium or added in the gaseous state. In the first part of the investigations the reaction rate of the chlorides of sodium or calcium with gas mixtures of SO,-0, or SO ,-O2 ,-SO , was measured. The rate for reactions with gas mixtures SO2-O2 is ThE chloridizing roasting of ores is applied when metal sulfides and oxides are to be converted into soluble or volatile compounds. At present the process is mainly applied to produce nonferrous metals which occur in pyrite cinders in small concentrations. Thereby the nonferrous metals are converted into water-soluble, acid-soluble, or volatile compounds whereas all the iron remains as insoluble oxide. The chlorine required is either obtained from the admixed chlorides of sodium or calcium or added in the gaseous state. The reactions occurring during the roasting process can be divided into two groups: solid-solid reaction and gas-solid reaction. The reactions between solids proceed by means of solid-state diffusion and are therefore of low velocity. The heterogeneous reactions between solids and gases of the roasting atmosphere5 are high-velocity processes and determine the velocity of the chloridizing roasting. These gas-solid reactions shall be the subject of the paper presented. In order to investigate the still little-known processes which occur during the chloridizing roasting 6-' the complex reaction is split into several partial steps. First the reactions of NaCl and CaCl, with gas mixtures of SO2 and 0, have been investigated at temperatures between 500" and 600°C by measuring the weight increase of the samples. The gas mixtures used in this series of experiments had first variable compositions, then the amount of SO 2 had been increased. Furthermore the influence of Fe 2 O3 admixtures upon these reactions, the behavior of pure Fe 2 O3 with the gaseous reactants, and the chlorination of the sulfides of lead, copper, nickel, and zinc have been investigated. FORMATION OF GASEOUS CHLORINE Pyrite cinders are never completely roasted and therefore contain still a small amount of sulfide sulfur. When heated again in air, this sulfur is converted into SO,. Accordingly the formation of chlorine can first be described by the reactions: dependent on the composition of the gas phase. If more than 1 pct SO 3 is added to the roasting gas, the reaction rate is determined only by the concentrations of the SO,. In the second part the reactions between chlorine and metal sulfides are discussed. The rate of formation of gaseous chlorine is higher by me order of magnitude than is the reaction rate between ZnS and chlorine. The reaction rate of NiS and PbS lies considerably below that of ZnS. The conversion rate of both pure Fe 2 O 3 and Fe 2 O 3 containing NaCl or CaCl2 when reacting with SO2-O2, mixtures with and without SO3 portions was measured at temperatures of 500", 550°, and 600°C. The weight increase of pressings was determined by means of a spiral balanceg and the reaction rate calculated therefrom according to Eqs. [ll to [31 and [5] to [7]. The prepared samples were suspended on a platinum filament in a vertically mounted tube of mullite (ID 4 cm, length 110 cm) which could be heated by a resistance tube furnace. The platinum filament was tied to the lower end of the spiral balance. A supremax glass tube (length 70 cm) was mounted gas-tight on top of the reaction tube. The unit was sealed up at its top by a ground-in stopper which was holding the spiral balance with the sample. The spiral balance therefore hung outside the high-temperature region of the furnace. Fig. 2 shows the experimental arrangement schematically. While lowering the sample into the reaction tube pure nitrogen was flowing through the reaction zone providing a protective atmosphere. After the sample had reached the reaction temperature within approximately 1 min, the protective gas was replaced by the sulfur dioxide-oxygen reaction mixture. The U.S. cement industry experienced its best year ever during 2004 in terms of production and shipments of cement. Clinker, portland and masonry cements production and shipments were up considerably. Clinker production as reported to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) was 87.75 Mt (96.73 million st), an increase of 5.4 percent. Gray and white portland cement production from domestic and imported clinker was estimated to be 91.6 Mt (101 million st), up 5 Mt (5.5 million st) from 2003.
