Traditional loading systems have relied for many years on wheel and track loaders, power shovels, conveyor belts, and more recently, hydraulic front shovels. Each has certain advantages and disadvantages, depending largely on job conditions. Hydraulic backhoes were introduced several years ago as still another truck loading option. At first, buckets were small and backhoe use was limited to small earthmoving projects. Now, as backhoes are equipped with shorter sticks and bigger buckets to move larger quantities of earth. The "mass excavation" concept offers an excellent truck loading option in many situations. System Development and Advantages Mass excavation was first used successfully by contractors in site development and highway construction, loading both on-highway and off-highway trucks. Operators were able to take advantage of the excavator's ability to work in poor underfoot conditions and dig in tough materials. The technique was first applied to mining in the kaolin mines of central Georgia. Kaolin, one of the world's most abundant minerals, is used to make paper, paint, ceramics, rubber, plastics, and many other products. Since kaolin clay is slippery when wet, load-out with wheel loaders is very inefficient. Also, kaolin is found in very spotty deposits due to the weathering process involved in its formation. Consequently, draglines are also impractical for kaolin mining since they don't have the mobility to move between clay deposits. In response to these mining conditions and kaolin characteristics, mines began using excavators in mass excavation as early as 1976. They have developed a system that takes advantage of the excavator's •high penetration and breakout force in tight materials; •fast-cycling hydraulics; •ability to work in poor underfoot conditions; and •mobility in comparison to draglines. This loading method has been successful in Georgia's kaolin mines and now can be applied to other mining operations as well. The Coronation Hill gold-platinum-palladium prospect is located in the valley of the South Alligator River (latitude 13'35'S, longitude 132'36'E), about 80 kilometres east of Pine Creek in the Northern Territory. Coronation Hill was one of thirteen sites in the South Alligator Valley at which uranium was mined between 1955 and 1964 after initial discovery by the Bureau of Mineral Resources in 1953. Most of the mines were operated by United Uranium No Liability. The Sleisbeck mine 25 kilometres south of Coronation Hill was operated by North Australian Uranium Corporation and the group of mines at Rockhole about 20 kilometres to the north-west of Coronation Hill was operated by South Alligator Uranium No Liability. The uranium mine at Coronation Hill produced about 26000 tonnes of ore averaging 2.6 kg/t U308 with an estimated average gold grade of 10.4 g/ gold. Gold was commonly associated with the uranium mineralisation and was recovered at the gravity treatment plant at El Sherana. Gold was also recovered in 1986 by Pacific Gold Mines Limited by treating the tailings from the Moline and Rockhole uranium leach plants at a CIP plant at Moline. With the completion of uranium contracts in 1964 mining in the South Alligator Valley ceased. Exploration for uranium continued in the area during the 1960s and 1970s with no success. The Coronation Hill Joint Venture (BHP Gold Mines Limited 45 per cent, Pioneer Minerals (Gold) Pry Ltd 45 per cent, Notgold Limited 10 per cent)carried out the first exploration specifically targetted at gold in 1984 with the drilling of five vertical drill holes which indicated high potential for a substantial gold resource at Coronation Hill with no associated uranium. The Joint Venture has sub- sequently drilled about 25000 metres of diamond drill holes at Coronation Hill alone. Analytical results from 1985 drilling established that platinum and palladium were associated with gold. An indicated resource of 3.49Mt at 5.12g/t Au, 0.21g/t Pt and 0.56g/t Pd has been calculated using a lg/t Au cut off.

In recent years, many individuals looking into the future of the blasting industry have predicted that the most likely next technological breakthrough would be the use of high precision, digitally controlled detonators. This seemed logical since not only was there much room for improvement in this area, but any significant improvement in delay timing could yield great benefits in productivity and control of adverse effects. And in fact, within the past two or three years, such electronic detonators have been introduced in the field by a number of different manufacturers. These systems are currently being used in many routine blasting operations around the world which are being closely watched and evaluated.

"The chemical reactions of fluoride and chloride gases with metal chloride or metal oxide are utilized as an effective treatment for harmless disposal. These chemical reactions can be adopted in the temperature range of 80°C~400°C, which is lower than that in the combustion treatment (800°C). Reaction products are metal fluoride or metal chloride which are a harmless and a valuable chemical material as one of new resources. This paper, concerns with a new harmless disposal treatment of toxic global warming gases.IntroductionNew technology to make fluoride and chloride gases such as NF3, CF4, SF6 BF3, Cl2 and BCl3 harmless has been developed and a new concept on the removing toxic gas to be used in the advanced process of materials has been established. The fluoride gases ~re toxic and special type of gases to be used in the process of manufacturing semiconductors and their specific applications include the dry etching of semiconductors, cleaning of CVD systems, an oxidation agent for rocket fuel etc. Especially, NF3 is also attracting an attention as a high-energy source for chemical laser systems. As a fluoride gas like NF3 is, however; toxic and highly stable chemically, if discharged into the atmosphere, it is liable to cause far-reaching adverse influences on global warming in the same manner as carbon dioxide gas and feron gas.Up till now, the combustion treatment method has been adopted for the disposal of the gas, and when treating the gas by high-temperature combustion (800""C), the generation of nitrogen oxides (NOx), sulfur oxides (SOx) and hydrogen fluoride (HF) have been confirmed: These chemical substances are not only linked with an intense c0rrosion of the combustion systems but also create the generation of atmospheric pollution and acid rains, and therefore, constitute a serious social issue."

While running certain float-and-sink tests, unit coal calorific values were determined for gravity fractions of a series of Illinois coals from several districts in the southern part of the state. When these values were plotted against specific gravity what appear to be characteristic curves of somewhat different shape were obtained for each district represented. This in itself seems noteworthy. The shape of the curves seems to indicate that the lightest fraction of the coal, which inspection shows to be largely vitrain, suffers the least deterioration in storage. It was also observed that on dilution curves established with dry ash and B.t.u. values the fractions of 1.35, 1.40 and 1.50 sp. gr., which constitute the greater weight per cent of a given coal sample, fall more frequently on a straight dilution line than do the lighter or heavier fractions of the same sample. In most instances there is a marked steepening between the 1.35 and the fraction of lighter gravity. In general the curve increases in steepness between the fractions of 1.50 and 1.70 specific gravity. The variations in the unit coal-specific gravity curves as well as those observed in dilution curves which appear to be pertinent to this problem are: (I) variation in coal substance with change in specific gravity, (2) variation in kind and quantity of mineral matter with the specific gravity of the fraction, (3) factors of analytical procedure which tend to introduce error in analysis, particularly in high-ash and high-sulfur fractions. A simple solution model, based upon the formation of molecular species, is developed for strongly electronegative dilute solutes in liquid binary-metallic solvents. Two approximations are considered for the relative concentrations of the species: the random and the quasi-chemical. Equations are presented for the partial molar free energy, enthalpy, and entropy of mixing of the solute. An experimental study has been made of equilibrium in the reaction H2 6) +0 (dissolved) = H2O(g))for the liquid Cu-Co alloys. The standard free energy of solution of oxygen is presented as a function of composition for the alloys at 1550°C and as a function of temperature for five of the alloys. The experimental results for these alloys and also for Cu-Ni alloys are shown to be in reasonable agreernent with the theory in the random approximation. A knowledge of the thermodynamic behavior of dilute solutes in liquid metals and alloys is of importance in understanding and designing refining and alloy-making processes. Accordingly, several attempts have been made to derive suitable solution models to forecast the effect of a third component on the activity coefficient of such a solute in a metal. Alcock and Richardson' reviewed the literature prior to 1958 and also showed that a regular solution model gave a reasonable description in the case of metallic solutes but failed to account for the behavior of the more electronegative solutes sulfur and oxygen. These same authors2 later modified their model by using the quasi-chemical approximation3 to calculate the average composition of the first coordination shell surrounding each solute atom. This modified model was shown to lead to a better qualitative description of the behavior of the electronegative solutes; however, quantitative agreement with experimental data for oxygen in alloys could only be achieved by assuming a very small coordination number. The authors concluded that the major source of error in the model was the assumption that pairwise interaction energies were independent of composition. Substitutional and interstitial random solution models by Wada and saito4 are essentially similar to the first model except that the required interchange energies were derived from the modified solubility parameter equation of Mott, instead of from experimental binary data. Most recently Hoch5 has presented a statistical model for interstitial solutions and has applied the model to the Fe-C-O system. However, as the various interaction energies needed in the model had to be derived from the ternary data, the model does not promise well as a means of forecasting ternary behavior. Each of the above models carries the assumption that the strongly electronegative solutes have the same configurational environment as metallic solutes; i.e., the solute can be treated as a substitutional or interstitial atom in a quasi-crystalline lattice and is surrounded by a normal coordination shell of solvent atoms. There are, however, a number of facts which suggest that this is unlikely. First, the heats of solution are large, being more typical of molecule formation rather than alloying. For example, the heats of solution of monatomic oxygen and sulfur in liquid iron are -90 kea16,8 and -74 kea1,7, 8 respectively. These are to be compared with maximum heats of solution of metallic solutes in liquid iron of about -13 keal (silicon is an exception with -28.5 kea17). The large depression of the surface tension of liquid iron by trace amounts of the electronegative solutes oxygen, sulfur, and selenium9 suggests, by analogy with aqueous systems, the possible existence of polar molecules in the liquid. The effect of these solutes is at least three orders of magnitude greater than normal metal solutes.10 As has been pointed out by Richardson,11 the electron affinities and ionization potentials of oxygen and sulfur are such that it is likely that they exist in metallic solution as negatively charged ions. If this is so, and it is assumed that electrostatic forces play an important role in determining the configuration, it is unlikely that the stable configuration will be that of an isolated ion surrounded by a symmetrical coordination shell of solvent ions. It is more likely that the energy of the system would be lowered by the formation of solute-solvent screened dipoles. The above arguments suggest the formation of "molecular species" between solute and solvent atoms. The idea of the existence of molecular species in such solutions is not new, however', for Marshall and chipman12 have explained in a semi-quantitative manner the C-O equilibrium in liquid iron by postulating the species CO. Chen and Chip-man13 interpreted their measurements on the Cr-O equilibrium in iron in terms of the species CrO. Zapffe and sims14 have also postulated the existence of such species in liquid-iron alloys.

In selecting solid solutions for the subject of this lecture I have been guided by several considerations. The bodies known under that somewhat paradoxical name play a most important part in all types of alloys; consequently, a deeper knowledge of their constitution must 'be of fundamental importance to both metallurgical science and practice. Further, having been asked to deal with some of the more theoretical aspects of metallurgy, I have been tempted to describe certain considerations, which I believe to be novel, in regard to the nature of solid solutions. These considerations constitute a theory that requires much experimental confirmation, but they have passed the stage of speculations, for experimental evidence has become available and one inference after another, that can be derived from the theory, is found to be in accord with well-known facts. In putting before you these ideas and inferences, it must be understood that detailed quantitative proof of every step cannot be furnished. Our conclusions must therefore be stated with the reservation that their acceptance must depend on the manner in which the discovery of fresh facts may either confirm or confound them. If we wish to understand the structure of solid solutions we nust carefully realize the manner in which these bodies are formed in alloys. The formation of solid solutions is by no means confined to alloys, but it is desirable to confin5 attention, at the outset, to intermetallic solid solutions. It is not easy to formulate a precise definition of the term "solid solution." It may be said that a solid solution is a crystalline body formed from a liquid solution or from an intimate mixture of solids, or of liquid and solid, that retains in the solid state an admixture of the two substances (solvent and solute) as intimate as that which exists in a liquid solution. The term is undoubtedly paradoxical, for one usually associates solution with a liquid, but the difficulty cannot be evaded by using such a term as solidified solution, for this might refer to a solution that has set, or congealed, without undergoing crystallization. Remining of abandoned coal mines in Pennsylvania requires the implementation of pollution abatement and mining techniques called Best Management Practices (BMPs). Water-quality data from over 100 remining sites with more than 230 abandoned discharges were analyzed with respect to the types of BMPs employed to abate the pollution loadings of acidity, iron, manganese, aluminum and sulfate. Discharges exhibiting a significant decrease in acidity were most highly associated with sites where large volumes of alkaline materials were encountered (66.7%) or added (63.7%). The best results for iron loading were achieved with large-quantity alkaline addition (54.6%) and water handling systems (47.8%). Water handling systems (47.4%), daylighting (40.7%), and revegetation (40.2%) were associated with significantly lower manganese loadings. The decreases in acidity and sulfate loads associated with increasing the amount of alkaline material in the backfill indicates that the production of acid mine drainage can be retarded by adding large quantities of alkaline materials.

Longwall tailgates in coal mines are often subject to severe mining induced loading and deformation. Innovative tailgate supports have been developed over the years to provide safe and economical access and a ventilation pathway at the tailgate. The support capacity and yield capabilities of the supports need to be matched to the loading imposed by the surrounding rock mass. The ground response curve can be used to represent the rock mass response to mining and its effect on support systems. The FLAC finite difference code was used to supplement field results by simulating a longwall tailgate and the associated ground response. The ground response curve is developed by modeling tailgate excavations with different internal support pressures and recording the resulting convergence. Ground response curves are developed for two typical longwalls operating in the Pittsburgh seam with weak and strong immediate roof. An additional model is presented in which the effect of weak overburden strata is simulated. The ground response is shown to be significantly affected by the strength of the immediate roof as well as the main roof. The importance of yield capacity of standing support is demonstrated. Gob height and compaction are found to affect the amount of convergence in the tailgate. The potential exists to develop site specific tailgate design curves by combining model results with field observations.

Resin bolt performance is dependent on the size of the resin annulus, the difference between the hole and bolt radii. The vast majority of the millions of resin roof bolts installed each year in the United States employ an annulus of 0.125 or 0.188 inches. Short encapsulation pull tests with resin annuluses of 0.125 and 0.095 inch resisted an average of 2.25tons per grouted inch, with no significant variation. Resin loses to simulated fractures increased as annulus size decreased, with a minimum loss of35% and a maximum loss of 60% associated with0.188 and 0.095 inch annuluses, respectively.

THE de-silverizing of base bullion at the Port Pirie works is carried out in accordance with the principles of the well-known Parkes process. The base bullion produced by the blast furnace department carries (apart from silver values) impurities, the chief of which are copper, antimony, and arsenic. In order to more clearly indicate the grade of the base bullion, the following analysis, representative of a half-year's production of base bullion, is submitted...Before proceeding with the actual operation of de-silverizing, it is necessary that the impurities, copper, antimony, and arsenic, should be eliminated. This is accomplished in the following steps :- (1) Removal of Coppel - Copper is largely present in the base bullion as dissolved sulphide, and this is removed by liquation in a reverberatory type furnace, of which the following are the essential details :-Working temperature 7500 to 8500 C.Coal consumption per 24 hours 2 tons.The hearth of the furnace is encased in a steel tank 22 ft. 4 in. long by 13 ft. 4 in. wide by 2 ft. 10 in. deep; the bottom of the tank is covered by a depth of composition conforming to the invert :-Cement 39 cwt.Brick dust 8.4 tons.Fireclay 0.6 tons.Sand 0.6 tons...

In the mechanical twinning of magnesium on the {1012} planes the crystal-lographic deformation is such that, in the direction of the hexagonal axis [0001], twinning is possible only undef tension stress, while in the directions perpendicular to the hexagonal axis, twinning is possible only under applied compression. Thus in extruded magnesium and magnesium alloys where the extruded textures are best described as either [1010] or [1120] fibers,' the basal planes are all nearly parallel to the extrusion axis and such material is susceptible to ( 1or2 ) twinning by compression in the direction of the extrusion axis. In order to explain the results of cyclic stressing in alternate tension and compression upon the tangent elastic modulus in such material, Dorn and Thomsen2 have postulated that, following twinning under applied compression, a retwinning or un-twinning occurs as a result of residual microtensile stresses immediately upon removal of the applied compressive force. Recently, Carapella and Shaw4 have used this supposition of untwinning in magnesium in discussing their results on indentation hardness and on cold drawing of MI sheet. In trying to confirm this hypothesis by suitable direct experiments, the authors have been unsuccessful in detecting any evidence whatsoever that untwinning follows the release of applied compression and are forced to conclude that this hypothesis is improbable or, at least, that the quantity of material involved is small. For the experiments, small cylindrical specimens 0.040-in. diam. X 0.120- to 0.140-in. long were etched from 0.0625-in. extruded rod. The ends of the specimens were accurately faced off parallel in a jeweler's lathe. The compression jig was simply an ordinary set of micrometer calipers with an anvil interposed between the spindle and the specimen. The anvil was free to move axially but restrained from rotating so that the rotation of the spindle would not introduce a twisting stress on the specimen. With this arrangement the compressive strains could be estimated to 0.0001 in. and X ray pinhole photographs could be taken with or without load as required. Fig I is the pattern of an uncompressed specimen of AZ3I alloy, showing the approximate [1010] extrusion fiber. The X ray beam is normal to the extrusion axis; in this position it is particularly sensitive in detecting twinning if one directs his attention to the diffraction ring from the basal plane. Since twinning on (1072 planes produced an 86" reorientation of the crystal lattice, the original basal reflections occur at the 3 and 9 o'clock positions while the (0002) reflections from any twinned material will occur at the 6 and 12 o'clock positions. Fig 2 shows the same specimen compressed 3.0 pct, photographed while still under load. This strain has been just enough to produce a detectible amount of twinning and the sensitivity is roughly indicated by the fact that no alterations were produced in the intensities or maxima of the other diffraction rings. "This paper examines the increasing need for mechanical-electrical people within the industry and some of the reasons why such a shortfall exists. It is suggested that, in part, it is image related. The present industry-education relationship in addressing the situation is examined and some thoughts are expressed on how these may be built on, in order to help solve the problem of attracting people to this critical area.IntroductionAs a long-time proponent of plant engineering and maintenance as a management function, I would like to review the progress made by the industry/ educational approaches in satisfying the needs in that area. In doing so, I would like to make the following points:1) that there has been an accelerating shortfall of mechanical-electrical people relative to the needs of the industry;2) that the condition will probably get worse before it gets better; ,3) that the past industry I educational approaches to alleviate the problem have met with limited success; and finally4) I would like to review some of the things being done and consider how these efforts might be extended."

South Bulga is a new longwall operation located in the Hunter Valley coal-mining region in Southeastern Australia. The mine’s objective is to achieve productivity levels significantly higher than the current industry average. From the day longwall production began, South Bulga’s output was below both budget and industry expectations, primarily because of the poor performance of the conveyor system. In the past, conveyor systems have been seen as an adjunct to the mine plan, not as an integral part. At past production levels, this approach may have been acceptable. In today’s mining operations, the conveyor system must be treated as integral and vital to the mining operation. The conveyor system is analogous to the vascular or circulatory system of the human body. Of itself, the system does not do anything, but if it is not functioning satisfactorily, the mine cannot operate.

Extensive studies have been carried out on electric furnace and blast furnace slags obtained in the winning of iron from its ores. These slags normally consist of elements of the gangue minerals present in the ores, as well as the added flux materials. In consequence, melts of CaO, MgO, Al2O3 and SiO2 can be considered as representing typical slag compositions. When a slag of this composition cools, it usually crystallizes according to predictions possible from an equilibrium diagram of these constituents, providing the melt is not undercooled to form glass. The melt is either viscous or fluid, depending upon the ratio of binary cations to silica, and crystallizes easily or forms a glass for the same reasons. If the melt is not overheated so that carbides of the metal components of the slag are formed and if the composition of the slag is so adjusted that it has a high fluidity, liquid equilibrium is attained and the slag can be held in a liquid state for extended periods of time. Upon tapping, the slag crystallizes into minerals, the type and proportion of which are determined by the melt composition. Since equilibrium is attained, the holding period is not critical. In melts containing a large increment of titanium, however, the normal slag procedures are not applicable. Titanium, as one of the atomic transition elements, is, at elevated temperatures, capable of being reduced to form metalloid compounds much more readily than the refractory oxides present in normal slags. In consequence, an oxide melt containing titanium never reaches equilibrium in a reducing environment, but continues to shift its composition until cooled. If melts of this nature are cooled and samples submitted to metal-lographic and X ray analysis the course of reaction and crystallization in this type of slag can be determined. Preparation of Slag The slags investigated fell into the system CaO-MgO-TiO2-Al2O3-SiO2 and were produced from ilmenite ores reduced by carbon in an electric furnace. Since the equilibrium series1 and the laboratory smelting of ilmenite2 are described in two of the accompanying papers, detailed description of the smelting procedure is not required here. However, certain essentials must be mentioned. Two types of melts were used to produce slags studied in this investigation. The first series of smelts made to determine proper flux addition were produced in a 4 lb Ajax induction furnace. The charge, consisting of ore with the proper flux addition, was heated in a graphite crucible until fluid, held fluid for a sufficient time period to obtain 1-5 pct FeO content, and poured. Because of the small size of the charge only the final sample of these melts could be examined. In the melts made in the 50 lb arc furnace, however, grab samples taken at 10 min. intervals between time of initial melting and final pouring were available for examination. These samples allowed a much clearer picture of the course of reaction and crystallization. amounts of ferrous oxide and reduced titanium compounds is opaque to transmitted light. Therefore, all petro-graphic studies had to be made on polished slag sections. A representative sample of slag was cut or broken, mounted in a thermosetting plastic, ground flat using 400 grit silicon carbide, the coarse scratches removed with 600 grit silicon carbide and polished on billiard cloth using levigated alumina. Rouge was avoided because of the entrainment of the red particles in pores in the slag, causing a possible confusion with some of the mineral phases. In order to prevent sample projection above the plastic surface red bakelite was used to hold the sample, and backed up with clear lucite. In this manner sample labels could be permanently retained in the mounting. The polished samples were examined on a Bausch and Lomb metallograph at magnifications of 250 X, 500 X, 1000 X and 1800 X. Petrology of Slags In order to determine the composition and mineral relatinos of a previously unreported system petrologically, it is essential that the starting composition, reaction temperature and final composition be known. The chemical composition of the ilmenite ore used in these smelts is given in Table 1, and the complete analysis of a typical high titanium, low iron slag is given in Table 2. Wollastonite, named after William H. Wollaston, an English chemist, is a calcium metasilicate, CaSiO3. It has a short history as an industrial mineral. The earliest production of wollastonite is reported to be from a deposit near Code Siding, located north of Randsburg, Calif. At this locality small tonnages of wollastonite were quarried during 1933-34 and 1938-41, and processed into mineral wool. This operation was largely experimental and virtually no United States production was again reported until the 1950s when a large deposit near Willsboro, N.Y., was developed by the Cabot Corp. A processing plant was placed on-stream in 1953, with nearly continuous production to date, and it is currently operated by Interpace Corp. Since 1958, wollastonite deposits in the Little and Big Maria Mountains of Riverside County, and in the Panamint Range of Inyo County, both in California, have operated intermittently for production of both ornamental and commercial wollastonite. During 1973, the United States was the major producing country, furnishing about 75% of the world's output. Recent production also has come from Finland, Mexico, and Kenya. Small amounts have been shipped intermittently from India, USSR, New Zealand, Republic of the Sudan, Republic of South Africa, and South-West Africa. The principal use of wollastonite is in the manufacture of ceramics, especially wall and floor tiles. Other uses are for paints, fillers, adhesives, reinforcing agents, plastics, fluxes, and glazes. Mineralogy Pure wollastonite, CaSiO3, has the composi¬tion of 48.3 % CaO and 51.7 % SiO,. However, it is seldom found in the pure state due to the ease with which it takes into solution the metasilicates of manganese, magnesium, iron, and strontium. Predominantly, wollastonite occurs as a contact metamorphic deposit forming between limestones and igneous rocks. Commonly associated minerals are garnet, diopside, epidote, calcite, and quartz. It has a specific gravity of 2.8 to 3.0, and hardness of 4.5 to 5 on Mobs' scale. When pure, it has a brilliant white color, but with impurities it may be grayish or brownish. Luster is vitreous to pearly. Melting point of wollastonite is about 1540° C. Wollastonite occurs in coarse-bladed masses, rarely showing good crystal form. It is usually acicular or fibrous, even in the smallest of particles. The most unique property of crushed and ground wollastonite is its cleavage. Fragments of crushed wollastonite tend to be needle-shaped, imparting a high strength, and this property is the basis for many of its uses. The fiber lengths are commonly in the ratio of 7 or 8 to 1, length to diameter. Some crystals of wollastonite fluoresce under short-wave or longwave ultraviolet light, or both; colors ranging from yellow-orange to pink-orange. Specimens may also show phosphorescence. The brightness of wollastonite is a property of considerable importance to the paint industry. Material, 99% pure, with a size of -325 mesh, has a General Electric reflectance rating of 92 to 96%. Chemically, wollastonite is inert and this property makes it useful as a filler and reinforcing agent. There are two polymorphs of calcium silicates: wollastonite, a low temperature form, and pseudowollastonite, a high temperature form. Inversion of wollastonite to pseudowollastonite occurs at about 1120° C, resulting in an increase in the coefficient of expansion and a color change. Pure white wollastonite, on inversion, may change to a cream tint, or various shades of red or brown. The color change is thought to be due to the presence of iron and strontium.

A eficiência energética na indústria vem ganhado destaque no contexto atual. Um dos grandes desafios da atualidade é de utilizar os vários milhares de medidas de processos industriais coletadas, armazenadas e, utilizadas como indicadores capazes de contribuirem para a melhoria da eficiência energética. O princípio é combinar métodos analíticos avançados e aprendizagem de máquina aliado a um forte envolvimento dos membros da equipe da usina para se instalar um Sistema de Gestão de Energia (EnMS) em conformidade com a ISO50001. O objetivo seria de proporcionar a usina economias significativas em termos de consumo de energia. Este trabalho resume as etapas críticas para a implementação do EnMS para processos complexos: dignosticar a variabiliade do consumo de energia, identificar uma proposta viável para consumo de energia, envolver todos os níveis de produção nos workshops de análise de causas, implementar modelos preditivos de monitoramento em tempo real, dar o suporte para a tomada de decisões e, fazer modelos de relatórios de desempenho. Um exemplo com uma indústria química será apresentado e demonstrará como a metodologia pode ser aplicada na otimização das áreas de produção e de distribuição de vapor através de da melhoria da gestão operacional. A experiência adquirida para esse caso enfatiza a importância em potencializar a utilização dos dados de monitoramento e, o envolvimento dos operadores para poder entender as práticas operacionais principais, promovendo por conseguinte, uma cultura de eficiência energética.

"Abstract - The Lilypad Lakes property is host to a group of Ta-mineralized dikes that occur over an area of at least 10 km2. Field relationships are consistent with a syn- to late syn-tectonic timing for their emplacement (with respect to the major regional D1 episode of deformation), with several of the dikes exhibiting a steeply dipping, open, S- to M- to Z-shaped fold geometry. Individual dikes range up to 30 m wide (Rubellite Dyke, Pollucite Dyke), have strike lengths of up to 750 m (e.g., JJ Dyke), and are continuous to depths of greater than 250 m (e.g., Rubellite Dyke, Pollucite Dyke). Typically, they display sharp intrusive contacts characterized by the development of thin, holmquistite-rich haloes. The Tamineralized dikes are comprised of silica- and alumina-rich, sodic, granitic pegmatites that display extreme levels of geochemical fractionation (K/Rb typically < 10.0, as low as 2.2; Nb/Ta typically < 0.20, as low as 0.03), and enrichments in an economically important group of lithophile elements, most notably Li, Rb, Cs, and Ta. Geochemical assays of individual surface grab and drill core samples have yielded values as high as 1.51 wt.% Li2O, 1.25 wt.% Rb2O, 6.21 wt.% Cs2O, and 0.108 wt.% Ta2O5. Diamond drilling has established the presence of wide (~20 m), potentially ore-grade intersections of Ta mineralization (>0.045 wt.% Ta2O5) in both the Rubellite and the Pollucite Dykes.Three Ta-oxide minerals (microlite, wodginite, manganotantalite) of primary origin predominate in the Ta-mineralized dikes, where they occur as fine, disseminated grains in the albite-rich pegmatite matrix. The sequence of crystallization is typically manganotantalite wodginite microlite, which conforms to a well-established paragenetic sequence for rare-element granitic pegmatites in general. All three of the primary Ta oxides are characterized by a high degree of chemical purity (e.g., average Ta concentrations in microlite from 77-79 wt.% Ta2O5), a compositional feature consistent with the extreme levels of geochemical fractionation characteristic of the host granitic pegmatites, and one that indicates that the Lilypad Lakes pegmatites are likely to produce Ta mineral concentrates of the very highest quality.Locally, a second generation of Ta minerals is present, restricted to small vugs in the pegmatite matrix that are surrounded by fine aggregates of K-rich mica or clay. The secondary Ta minerals are dominated by microlite, which is typically intergrown with fluorite and Fe-sulphides, and is distinguished from its primary counterpart by its lower Ta content (around 70 wt.% Ta2O5) and much higher concentration of uranium (up to 9 wt.% UO2). Also, secondary microlite consistently yields low analytical totals from electron microprobe analysis, suggesting that it is H2O-rich. The presence of this second, vug-related generation of microlite, together with the occurrence of localized networks of crosscutting fractures that host high concentrations of Cs and Rb (in the minerals pollucite and Rb-Kfeldspar), suggests that a late-stage, fluid-dominated metasomatic/hydrothermal event may have been important in certain sections of the dikes, and has effected a redistribution of the economically important elements Ta and Cs."

A misfire results when explosives fail to detonate as planned during a mine blast. Accidental detonation of misfires is a frequent cause of personal injury, equipment damage, and lost production. In an effort to minimize these problems, the Bureau of Mines investigated the causes of misfires, methods for detecting misfires, and procedures for their disposal. During this investigation, input was obtained from explosives suppliers, mining companies, blasting contractors, blasting consultants, and governmental agencies. Additional data were obtained through detailed analysis of blasting accidents involving misfires.
