"Since late 1980s the research group led by late Professor Andre Robert Laplante at McGill University undertook fundamental studies and applied research of the Knelson Concentrator (KC) and developed a sustainable method to correctly estimate gravity recoverable gold (GRG). In the early time a concept of ‘free gold’ was used, it was defined as the gold that could be separated and recovered from gold ore by amalgamation. Due to health and safety hazards, its practical use had declined. Around 1994, a methodology using a 3-in Knelson Concentrator to measure gravity recoverable gold was established at McGill University. Through more than 10 years’ improvement and optimization, this technique had become a standard method to evaluate GRG for gold ores, gold plant streams and platinum group metals. Until 2006, about 200 GRG tests had been carried out at McGill University for the ores from all over the world. Recently, a modified version of GRG test (short test) with the advantages of reduced processing time and lower cost had been developed for the mundane needs of gold industry.INTRODUCTIONGold gravity recovery has evolved significantly over the past twenty-five years, mainly because of the advent of the Knelson Concentrator (Knelson 1988, 1990, 1992, Laplante 2000). Now, a series of Knelson Concentrators for different applications are manufactured and used in gold industry all over the world (Knelson Concentrators 2004).In 1980s the Knelson Concentrator gained acceptance from mining industry as an effective device for the recovery of gold from grinding circuit. Knelson Concentrator became the obvious choice because of its design features: a relatively long processing time without concentrate discharge (compared to some other centrifuges, such as Falcon Concentrator and Chinese Yunxi Centrifuge at that time), large throughput capacity, treating a wide size range of material, yielding a high grade concentrate with small mass that could easily be smelted. As more and more Knelson Concentrators were accepted in gold industry, mineral processing engineers faced with challenges: what are the separation mechanisms of the Knelson Concentrator? How much gold can be extracted for an ore if a Knelson Concentrator is installed? For answering these questions, a laboratory scale Knelson Concentrator was created."

The resultant load vector is the representation of the forces applied to a longwall roof support element by caving strata into a single, quantifiable measure of support resistance. The relatively complex kinematics of the shield support prohibit a determination of support resistance simply by summation of leg forces. A method is being investigated by the Bureau of Nines to determine the resultant load vector by instrumenting supports with pressure transducers and strain gages to measure leg, canopy capsule, and lemnisoate link forces. This concept has been laboratory tested in the Bureau's Nine Roof Simulator. Functional relationships among variables have been assessed, and confidence intervals have been established for prediction of the resultant load vector parameters.

This paper describes laboratory techniques and subsequent results of Bureau of Mines research to produce chlorination-grade feedstock from an abundant, low-grade, domestic, rock ilmenite ore. The research is part of the Bureau-effort to devise technology that may help decrease U.S. dependence on imported raw materials. A rock ilmenite containing about 46 wt pct Ti02 was smelted in an electric arc furnace with coke, woodchips, and Na2C03 to separate most of the iron as pig iron and to form a low-iron, titanium-enriched slag. The slag was ground, pelletized, oxidized, and then sulfated with mixtures of SO2 and air in a continuous 4.5- to 9.1- kg/h apparatus at 1023 to 1223 K. The sulfated slag, containing 60 to 65 pct TiO2, was reground and leached in water at ambient temperature to decrease the combined levels of the troublesome Ca, Mg, and Mn impurities from 7.0 to 1.7 wt pct. At levels of more than 3 wt pct, these impurities contribute to operating and disposal problems, The final product was upgraded to about 84 wt pct TiO2. This material potentially is suitable for chlorination in a fluidized-bed reactor. The most favorable results were achieved with leached slag sulfated at a feedrate of 4.5 kg/h and at temperatures of 1073 to 1123 K.

The prevention of acid mine drainage (AMD) in situ is more attractive than down-gradient treatment alternatives that do not involve source control. AMD source control can be achieved by shifting the microbial activity in the sulfidic rock from pyrite oxidation to anaerobic heterotrophic activity. This is achieved by adding biodegradable organic carbon amendments to the sulfidic rock. This technique was applied to an abandoned coal mine pool in Pennsylvania. The pool had a pH of 3.0 to 3.5. Following treatment, near-neutral pH and decreased effluent heavy metal concentrations were achieved. In situ bioremediation by the enhancement of bacterial iron and sulfate reduction is a promising technology for AMD prevention.

Stockyard operations are governed by the interaction between the different disciplines required to successfully schedule and control the supply chain of raw material through the stockyard in combination with the effectivity of the operation of the stockyard equipment. The system demonstrates a proven technology for implementing a centralised operation of full unmanned stockyard equipment, using a high precision absolute positioning system based on a Real-Time Kinematic (RTK) Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) receivers in combination with 3D rangefinders. The system implementation maps the surface profile of the stockyard inventory and allows in combination with proprietary algorithms for full operation of the stockyard machines without on-board operators. The operational impact of delayering the process by moving to a centralised operation is examined, together with the combined effect on the overall safety in the stockyard as a result of a change in reliance on operator skill dependencies. Average performance gains range from 10–20 per cent. The performance of the automation system is related to a consistency and reliability of uniform operation, which has an impact on the life expectancy and the effectiveness of the equipment. The effects of having instantaneous and correct information about the stockyard inventory volume measurement are investigated in relation towards spot price trading in current fast reacting markets.CITATION:Stefansen, R, 2017. Silver is a very important metal used in a wide range of applications. It is necessary to recovery of Ag from electronic wastes for increasing of Ag price and circumstance protection. For separating and recycling Ag from Ag-Cu composite materials, thermodynamic data of reaction is calculated and some experiments have been proceeded with Ag-Cu composite material scraps, time, temperature, nitric-sulfuric mixed acid volume ratio and the volume ration of mixed acid vs. water have been discussed. The results show that the optimization conditions is that nitric-sulfuric mixed acid volume ratio 5:95, volume ratio of mixed acid vs. water 10:1, temperature 55?, time 25min. In the conditions, Ag can be selectively leached from Cu-based composite material, Cu base is not eroded nearly.

A unique circumstance created by monitoring a pre-driven longwall recovery room permitted measuring the stresses of a coal pillar throughout its entire life cycle in less than a week. A fender pillar, created in approximately the middle of a longwall panel at a depth of 650 ft, transformed from a solid barrier pillar - to a yielding pillar - to a residual pillar as 3 ft slices were methodically removed with the longwall shearer. The complete transformation, or life cycle, took place in less than 12 hours. The stresses were quickly transferred from the pillar onto the standing pumpable concrete supports and into the outby pillars. Roof to floor closure measurements, combined with the timing of the pillar behavior, provides a detailed look at the uncontrollable convergence of underground mine openings. Pillars remain the most important form of ?primary support? and understanding these life cycles is vital for safe and efficient mine design, in both room and pillar and longwall panel extractions.

In any process or organization inefficiencies are costly. In times of abundance this reality often does not receive much attention. During such times the focus is rather on increasing capacity to increase production. However, there is a growing awareness in the world of tougher economic, social as well as environmental conditions, and enterprises find themselves facing greater demands for accountability towards shareholders, the environment and the public, as well as growing competition for market share and limited global resources. This reality is no different in ensuring a sustainable mineral sands operation. In order to achieve this, any operation needs to be stripped of all process as well as operational inefficiencies. In this context it has become essential for any Mineral Separation Plant (MSP) to have the necessary process monitoring and control systems in place to continually monitor and optimize the production of on-spec products and maximize operational efficiency and consistency. The MSP Grade Control Solution developed by Crusader Systems and running on top of the CSense platform contributes towards these goals by improving the consistent production of on-grade product. This allows the process to operate closer to the maximum allowable product grade constraint, which in turn maximizes production.

"The exploration of seamounts south of the Azores during the EMEPC/Açores/G3/2007 campaign allowed for the collection of 30 Fe-Mn crusts from the Atlantis, Great Meteor, Small Hyeres, Irving and Plato seamounts, as well as from the East Azores Fracture Zone. These were the first samples of Fe-Mn crusts studied from these seamounts. The Fe-Mn crusts were analyzed using multiple analytical methods.The crusts are fairly homogeneous, showing typical textures for this type of occurrences. The Fe/Mn ratio, patterns and concentrations in rare earth elements, and the great homogeneity of the crusts lead to the conclusion that they have a hydrogenetic origin, precipitating directly from seawater. Although the content in Fe and Mn of the crusts is consistent with data available for the Atlantic, the mean concentration of Co is comparable to the average values for the Pacific. Cu and Ni show lower values than the ones known for the Pacific."

ABSRACT: In this paper numerical simulation of jointed block mass behaviour obtained in an experimental study has been presented. Singh et al. (2002) conducted extensive tests on the jointed model materials with several joint configurations. The results of this experimental study were used to validate the strength behaviour of numerical block mass model developed using professionally available software. This software basically contains different kinds of material models. From the results of numerical simulation the existence of strength anisotropy was observed. The strength anisotropy so obtained has been compared with the experimental values reported by Singh et al. (2002). The anisotropic curves in both cases are U-shaped with flat base. They show good agreement in sliding mode of failure zone in which inclination ß (= 90° - ?) of joint set-I lie between 20° to 40° for all cases of interlocking. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: In dieser numerischen Papiersimulation des verbundenen Blockmasse Verhaltens, das in einer experimentellen Studie erhalten wird, ist dargestellt worden. Singh et al. (2002) leiteten umfangreiche Tests auf den verbundenen vorbildlichen Materialien mit einigen gemeinsamen Konfigurationen. Die Resultate dieser experimentellen Studie wurden verwendet, um das Stärke Verhalten des numerischen Blockmasse Modells zu validieren, das mit professionell vorhandener Software entwickelt wurde. Diese Software enthält im Allgemeinen unterschiedliche Arten der materiellen Modelle. Von den Resultaten der numerischen Simulation wurde das Bestehen von Stärke Anisotrophie beobachtet. Ce logiciel contient fondamentalement différents genres de modèles matériels. Des résultats de la simulation numérique on a observé l'existence de l'anisotropie de force. L'anisotropie de force ainsi obtenu a été comparée aux valeurs expérimentales rapportées par Singh et autres (2002). Les courbes anisotropes dans les deux cas sont en U avec la base plate. Elles montrent la bonne concordance dans le mode coulissant de la zone d'échec en lequel la inclination ß (= 90° - ?) du joint placez-Je le mensonge entre 20° à 40° pour tous les cas d'enclencher.

The computer program. DMC Qistinct Motion &de), which w&s developed for simulating the rock motion associated with blasting, has been used to study the intluence of row delay timing On rock mOtiOn. The munerical simulations correspond with field observations in that vmy short delays (< 5Oms) and vety long delays(> 3oOms) produce a lower percent-cast thao a medium delay (100 to ZOO ms). The DMC predicted relatio&lp between row delay timing and percent-cast is more complex than expected with a dip in the auve where the optimum timing might be expected. More study is required to gain a full undasranding of this phenomenoo.

Hazelwood Power Mine is one of the largest open pit brown coal mines in Australia. The removal of overburden is the first step in coal winning operation. The primary aim of construction of overburden dump is to provide an effective stable working surface for stacker. The paper discusses site investigation techniques used to determine dump soil properties, stability analysis method using GALENA and GWEDGEM, results of stability analysis. The paper concludes with recommendation for a safe dumping strategy for level 2 stacker dumping.

Mining through in panel entries and the full face recovery method has been successfully practiced at U.S. Stwl, Mine 50. Suppat of the cut-through entries and recovery room is critical. Traditionally, concrete crib or fly ash cement backfill has been utilized. However, these traditional methods are not feasible at Mine 50 due to the difficulties of the plow face mining through these types of support. Recent development of new cable support systems provides an option for cut-through entry support. Mine 50 and Jennmar Corporation personnel have worked together to design and apply the cable systems in the cut-through entries and full face recovery room to eliminate standing support. To date, a number of full face recovery rooms and cut-through inpanel entries have been successfully mined. The results indicate that the cable systems combined with high capacity shields, have provided sufficient capacity to support the roof. Utilizing the Jennmar Finite Element Analysis (JFEA) computer program (Stankus and Guo, 1996), an analysis of the stress and roof deflection changes as the longwall gradually cut through was conducted. From the finite element analysis data, a supplemental support plan was designed. The history and experiences at Mine 50 are presented. Based on the case experiences and modifications made to the finite element analysis, an improved design criteria for future use has been formulated.

Estimation of iron ore grade distribution has been attempted using geostatistics and artificial neural network (ANN) based models for a banded iron formation (BIF) type iron ore deposit of East India. Geologically, it is a supergene iron ore formation through an enrichment process of parent material (BIFs) by gradual leaching of impurities, namely SiO2 and Al2O3. As the degree of leaching differs spatially, distribution of Fe varies depending on local controls of ore formation. While geostatistical methods work on models based on spatial correlations of mineralisation parameters, ANN models a non-linear distribution and is widely used as a global approximator. Spatial distribution modelling of Fe values has been carried out employing ordinary kriging (OK) and sequential Gaussian simulation (SGS). Non-linear modelling has been performed using hybrid neural networks (HNN) that provided an alternative option for grade estimation. Classical statistical modelling revealed a negatively skewed 3-parameter lognormal Fe population having a mean of 60.49 per cent with a skewness of -0.08 and a kurtosis of 2.60. Semi-variography and geostatistical estimation employing OK procedure led to block-by-block kriged estimates with associated kriging variance, which provided an overall mean kriged estimate and kriging variance of Fe as 60.29 per cent and 7.76 (per cent)2 respectively. SGS procedure revealed a mean of 60.71 per cent and a standard deviation of 5.89 per cent with minimum and maximum values as 45.12 per cent and 68.70 per cent respectively in respect of Fe. HNN model provided values of mean squared error (MSE) and correlation coefficient (R2) as 12.33 and 0.61 respectively, thereby exhibiting the robustness of the model to sustain maximum heterogeneity within the target domain. A comparison of Fe grade estimates obtained by kriging, simulation and HNN models more or less maintain similar distribution patterns that are close to the sample data. It is thus opined to carry out the grade prediction exercise employing all these three modelling approaches to obtain alternative scenarios for improved mine planning and design exercises. On the assumption that stress or strain relaxation occurs as the result of a thermally activated process, equations are derived relating to tensile experiments that give the strain as a function of the time under the condition of constant stress, and the stress as a function of the time for constant strain. It is demonstrated that if the strain-rate equation i = previously proPosed by Kuhlmann., is used as a starting point, then the relaxation of strain at constant stress may be expressed by the equation c = (-RT/(Y) 1tz tanh (t + is the strain capable of being relaxed at any given instant. Similarly, it is shown that the relaxation of stress at constant strain may be given by a = (-RT/B) In tanh (t + t0)/27, where a is the instantaneois value of the relaxable stress. The fact that these relationships reduce to well-known empirical equations at both large and small values of the stress Or strain is also shozcn. The present theory is shown to agree well with experimental data obtained from tensile elastic aftereffect experiments on a zirconium specimen prestrained at 77 k as to make it strongly anelastic. It is also demonstrated that elastic aftereffect data obtained using torsional specimens ?,Lay agree reasonably well with the equation derived for the case of tension. RELAXATION experiments are often employed as a means of studying metallic deformation mechanisms.&apos; The simplest and most commonly employed techniques involve stress relaxation at constant strain and strain relaxation at constant stress. In general, however, investigations of this nature have been seriously handicapped in the past by a lack of suitable equations giving the time dependence of the relaxing variable over an interval that extends from small strains up into the region where internal-friction experiments become strain-amplitude dependent. This paper presents a derivation of such a set of equations for the case where the time-dependent part of the strain is anelastic or recoverable and the specimens are loaded in simple tension. The relaxation of strain under the condition of constant stress will be considered first. Let us assume that strain relaxation occurs as the result of a reversible thermally activated process that occurs at a number of relaxation centers lying in an elastic matrix. Then, following Kuhlmann,2 we may express the rate of strain relaxation as follows: where C is the strain rate, AFx the free energy of activation of the process controlling strain relaxation, a, the effective or average resolved stress at the relaxation centers, u an activation volume, R the universal gas constant, T the absolute temperature, > a factor with dimensions of a volume that accounts for the strain contribution of a successful operation of a unit process, N the number of relaxation centers per unit volume, and v the Debye frequency. Este trabalho mostra a versatilidade e praticidade do uso da metodologia denominada “Método e Aparelho para Avaliar as Propriedades de Coqueificação do Carvão”, metodologia esta desenvolvida e patenteada pelo corpo técnico da SunCoke Energy. Esta técnica tem possibilitado o desenvolvimento de novas misturas de carvões totalmente alinhadas com os dois grandes pilares da Siderurgia mundial: misturas e coque com baixo custo e qualidade adequada. A fidelização com todas as particularidades do processo real de coqueificação faz desta metodologia uma poderosa ferramenta para tomada de decisão na definição de novos blends, como também para a caracterização de carvões dos quais ainda não se conhece seu potencial para produzir um coque de boa qualidade. Diferentemente das tecnologias similares existentes, o “Box Test” da SunCoke Energy tem robustez suficiente para ser reutilizado para até quatro enfornamentos e é capaz de produzir massa suficiente de coque para que sejam realizadas todas as análises para uma perfeita caracterização do coque.
