"In this paper, the electrochemical behavior of ferric and ferrous couple on the pyrite surface was studied by application of the chronoamperometry technique in an acidic solution at room temperatures and atmospheric pressure. The effects of the pyrite origin, ferric and ferrous ions concentration on the electron transfer kinetics of Fe3+/Fe2+ reaction were probed. Tafel behavior of all the test conditions were developed. The results showed that the ferric-ferrous reaction on pyrite electrodes with different origins have a common mechanism, despite different reaction kinetics. The exchange current densities of the redox reaction have the same magnitude of about 10-5 A·cm-2, which is far lower than the value reported for the gold and platinum electrodes, but larger than that of the chalcopyrite electrode. The cathodic transfer coefficients are between 0.4 and 0.5, while the anodic transfer coefficients appear unusual with the lowest value being 0.23. It was also demonstrated that an increase of one order of magnitude of iron concentration has no clear effect on the exchange current density and cathodic transfer coefficients of Fe3+/Fe2+ redox reaction.INTRODUCTIONPyrite, FeS2, is mostly considered as a gangue mineral which frequently coexists with valuable minerals and metals, such as gold, copper and nickel. Its separation from valuable minerals can be a costly process (Chandra & Gerson, 2010). In refractory gold ores, the fine gold particles are locked inside the pyrite structure. Oxidative leaching of pyrite is a hydrometallurgical method to destroy the structure of pyrite and expose the fine gold particles to the cyanide solution in the downstream cyanidation circuit. Pyrite oxidative leaching can be achieved by oxidation of pyrite via oxygen and ferric ion(McKibben & Barnes, 1986). In fact, pyrite oxidation by oxygen and ferric is a significant source of acid mine drainage(AMD), which adversely causes serious environmental problems(V. P. Evangelou, 1995).The pyrite oxidation mechanism is accomplished in three consecutive steps: (i) pyrite is oxidized by oxygen and ferrous ion formation (Eq. 1); (ii) ferrous oxidation by oxygen and ferric ion formation (Eq. 2); (iii) pyrite oxidation by means of ferric ions (Eq. 3). This paper describes the general approach to ore reserve estimation and mine planning used at the Kidston Gold Mine. The geological setting and exploration is briefly summarized for background information.A geostatistical study of the deposit was carried out to determine the geological ore reserve. This was confirmed using a manual polygonal technique. Optimum pits outlined by a Lerchs-Grossman open pit design algorithm were manually smoothed allowing mineable reserves to be calculated. Mine production schedules based on kriged block grades and tonnages are continuously updated using production blasthole assays. An arithmetic mean technique of block grade estimation has proved successful to date. After milling approximately 4.9Mt of ore, the mill grade of 2.13g Au/t is only 0.5% above the mine estimate of 2.12g Au/t. The difference in contained gold between "As staked" blasthole reserves and kriged mineable reserves is 3.8%. The application of blasthole kriging as a basis for ore/waste classification in erratically mineralized areas is being evaluated. Planned future developments are briefly mentioned.

A kinetic study of the carbon deposition reaction was undertaken by the Bureau of Mines as part of a broad investigation of metallurgical reactions in the iron ore blast furnace. The disproportionation of carbon monoxide on iron pellets was investigated at carbon monoxide pressures between 0.5 and 2 atmospheres (absolute) and temperatures from 400° to 1,075° C. Gas flow in the range from 0.25 to 0.85 standard liter per minute was found to have little effect on the reaction velocity. The addition of nitrogen and helium to caron monoxide exerted only a dilution effect on the rate of carbon deposition. However, an addition of 1 percent hydrogen increased the rate about 100 times. Small amounts of carbon dioxide in the inlet gas exerted little effect on the rate of carbon deposition. The maximum rate for carbon deposition in the first 2 hours occurred at 550° C. The apparent molar activation energies at various stages of the reaction were found to vary from 13 kcal initially to 36 kcal during the latter stages of the reaction. The reaction rate behavior was tentatively explained by an adsorption step followed by the diffusion of iron through a shell of inactive iron carbide.

Pyrrhotite (Po) is widely considered to be the most significant mineral in the self-heating of sulphides. It is therefore desirable to determine the amount of Po in mineral samples. This is commonly accomplished through x-ray diffraction (XRD) or quantitative evaluation of materials by scanning electron microscopy (QEM-SEM). This paper introduces another quantitative method based on Mossbauer analysis that requires limited sample preparation and has the additional potential to detect the sulphur/iron ratio within Po. The technique is explored using pentlandite/pyrrhotite mixtures.

LAGGING technology and the slow spread of information have been the chief obstacles to widespread participation in minimizing the industrial pollution load. These obstacles can be conquered by fact finding and applied research. There are three aspects to the problem of water-borne mineral waste: to minimize the amount being thrown away, to select a predisposal treatment, and to use the products or dispose of them. It is often possible to minimize the waste by making very minor changes in the process that produces it. For example, a manufacturer of automobile bumpers greatly reduced the dragout 'from a plating bath by modifying the design and position of two boltholes.' A plater of automobile hubcaps installed a drainage bar and decreased the loss of chrome-plating solution to the rinse water by about 80 pct.' The mill at a western mine found it possible to discard 60 to 70 pct of an ore with minimum treatment," so that the processing effort could be concentrated on a high-graded slime, with significant reduction in costs and improvement in recovery. The possibilities for waste reduction through process changes are limited only by the imagination. A recent patent points out the advantages of using No. 1 fuel oil instead of water in wet-process cement making;& the fuel oil presumably has better properties than water for this purpose and is said to be almost com'pletely recovered or utilized, so that there is no waterborne waste. Recycling to reduce wastes and improve process economy is very well illustrated in vanadium and uranium recoveries from relatively low grade ore. Ores containing 6 pct calcium carbonate were found to give poor vanadium recovery by the salt-roasting process because the vanadium was converted to water-insoluble calcium vanadate. Following the salt-roasting process, sulfuric acid was used to leach the uranium. Enough calcium sulfate was formed

Um sistema de blindagem multicamada consiste de uma camada frontal de cerâmica, uma camada intermediária de fibras sintéticas ou de material compósito, e uma camada posterior de um metal dúctil. Recentemente, há o interesse em substituir as fibras sintéticas por fibras naturais, por suas propriedades adequadas, menor custo e peso. O objetivo deste trabalho é avaliar o desempenho de compósitos de matriz poliéster reforçados por fibras naturais de Curauá em blindagens multicamada. Placas com 0, 10, 20 e 30% vol. de fibras integraram a blindagem que sofreu impacto balístico com munição 7.62 mm, e o dano foi avaliado pela indentação característica em plastilina e por uma análise microscópica das superfícies de fratura. Foi mostrado que a blindagem resiste ao impacto balístico, atendendo à norma NIJ-0101.04 para o nível de proteção III. Além disso, as fibras de Curauá são responsáveis por manter a coesão do compósito após o impacto balístico, e o compósito por dissipar parte da energia do projétil por mecanismos como delaminação, trincamento da matriz, fratura e descolamento das fibras.

Paper presented at the conference Economic geology in Europe and beyond II, models for mineral deposits in sedimentary basins, held in Keyworth, UK, 13-14 April 1994. The region includes the Deveci siderite/goethite deposit and the Hasancelebi, Karakuz and Kuluncak magnetite/goethite deposits; Deveci is the only mine in operation. The area consists of a serpentine-gabbro complex overlain by a volcano-sedimentary sequence hosting the iron ores. At least three generations of hydrothermal alteration have affected all rock types except the latest trachytic dykes. The Deveci deposits occur in a pyroclastic volcano-sedimentary sequence with shales and carbonates equivalent to the main mafic sequence, whereas the other three deposits formed contemporaneously with the intrusion of trachytic dykes. The deposits are of the volcanic-exhalative type, with syngenetic siderite in pillow lavas or stratiform layers the primary and main Fe-bearing mineral. In the west hydrothermal alteration has replaced siderite in pillow lavas with magnetite or has remobilised sideritic iron into magnetite veins

A legislação ambiental vem se tornando mais restritiva em diversos setores industriais. Isto não tem sido diferente para o setor siderúrgico. Com a inclusão de limites de emissão de elementos traços nas legislações ambientais mundo afora, este tema vem ganhando importância. É conhecido que a qualidade das matérias-primas utilizadas nos processos siderúrgicos pode interferir nos impactos ambientais de seus processos. No caso do processo de sinterização, a presença de elementos traços está ligada a composição de sua carga. Com o objetivo de determinar quais elementos irão compor as emissões atmosféricas, resíduos, efluentes e produtos faz necessário estudar o modo de ocorrência dos elementos traços em cada insumo. A interação entre as propriedades de cada elemento e as condições de massa e termodinâmicas permitem o estudo de seu comportamento e partição. Assim, o objetivo deste trabalho é levantar o estado da arte da sinterização de minério de ferro e suas emissões, estudando a origem, o comportamento e a partição de elementos traços e radionuclídeos, quando submetidos às condições do referido processo.

Este trabalho tem por objetivo apresentar o projeto de modernização do sistema de supervisão da Mina, Britagem e Concentrador I da unidade de Germano da Samarco Mineração. A principal motivação que levou a Samarco a modernização do sistema de supervisão foi o fato da aplicação atual já estar saturada, dificultando novas implementações, além de já apresentar limitações no diagnóstico de defeitos e intertravamentos. Na solução implementada, destaca-se a estratégia de virtualização adotada, o sistema para cadastramento e modificação em tempo real das entidades do CLP e as funcionalidades para gestão de alarmes.

In recent times processing of arsenic-laden complex ores and heightened awareness of the detrimental health effects of arsenic has put an increasing burden on metallurgical operations to remove arsenic from processes for disposal in an environmentally stable form. At present, arsenic is removed and prepared for storage by precipitation of insoluble secondary arsenic-bearing minerals. It has been suggested that Ca(II)-Fe(III)-As(V) phases resembling the natural mineral yukonite, under certain conditions, may have a role in controlling arsenic pore water concentrations in arsenical waste storage facilities. In this study, a previous synthesis method of yukonite (Ca3Fe5(AsO4)4(OH)9⋅4H2O) is revisited and new solubility/stability data is presented based on a modified method.

Controlar a distribuição de carga do Alto Forno é fundamental para o controle de processo, e através de sua otimização, dentre as mais variadas configurações operacionais, busca-se lograr da estabilidade do processo e aproveitamento do gás no interior do reator. Para tal, utiliza-se um sistema de carregamento, sendo o mais usado na atualidade o do tipo Bell Less Top com calha rotativa. Durante o carregamento do forno as partículas passam pela calha rotativa, resultando em abrasão dos elementos de desgaste que por sua vez, altera a geometria da mesma, gerando alterações na trajetória das partículas carregadas e a mudança de trajetória pode perturbar a marcha do Alto Forno. Nesse contexto, a boa condição da calha passa a ser um fator essencial para a manutenção da estabilidade operacional. O presente trabalho, aplica o método dos elementos discretos (DEM) para caracterizar os efeitos do desgaste da calha na trajetória do material descarregado, podendo assim avaliar melhor os distúrbios na estabilidade do Alto Forno, e com isso a indicar o melhor momento para troca da calha.

"Chloride ions and their interactions with two organic smoothing additives – Cyquest® N-900 and HydroStar® 4208 – during copper electrodeposition were explored using cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The results revealed that chloride ions, up to a concentration of 40 mg/L, depolarized the copper deposition reaction. A combination of chloride ions and Cyquest N-900 inhibited the depolarization reaction during copper electrodeposition. It is proposed that the chloride ions acted as bridging ligands between copper and Cyquest N-900. Addition of HydroStar at a concentration of 2.5 mg/L depolarized the copper deposition reaction when no chloride ions were present. This behavior did not change with the addition of chloride ions at the concentrations tested, indicating that chloride ions and the polysaccharide do not interact.IntroductionElectrowinning is a major production method used to obtain high-purity copper. In modern tankhouses, copper is electrodeposited onto stainless steel blanks and then stripped, washed and bundled for delivery. Significant improvements in the quality of electrowon copper have been made over the last few decades. Additives, temperature, current density, electrolyte concentrations and agitation are known to influence the quality of copper electrodeposits (Jenkins and Eamon, 1990).The influence of chloride and organic additives on copper electrodeposition has been the subject of considerable research. The addition of small quantities of chloride and organic additives has been recognized to significantly improve the properties of copper electrodeposits. These additives are critical in the prevention of dendrite growth and the production of smooth, dense cathode deposits.Chloride ions have been reported to catalyze the copper reduction reaction and assist in the production of uniform deposits (Lakshmanan et al., 1977; Sun and O’Keefe, 1992). Moreover, it is generally agreed that chloride ions depolarize the copper deposition process at low (several millimolar) chloride concentrations. This is because chloride ions catalyze the reduction of copper (II) ions to copper (I) ions (Cu2+ ? Cu+ + e-) in the rate-limiting step of this process (O’Keefe and Hurst, 1978; Ilgar and O’Keefe, 1997; Hebert, 2005; Shao, Pattanaik and Zangari, 2007)."

A umidade nos óleos protetivos temporários e na solução de encruamento, bem como alterações no pH da água desmineralizada, utilizada na lavagem do aço antes do seu oleamento, podem causar manchas na superfície dos aços revestidos com zinco. As condições de transporte e de estocagem nos clientes também podem causar manchas. Essas manchas causam forte impacto visual, podendo gerar dúvidas na aplicação dos aços. Por esse motivo, algumas medidas são utilizadas na Usiminas para evitar manchas, como os controles da umidade no tanque de armazenamento dos óleos, do pH da água desmineralizada e do tempo de estocagem entre o encruamento e o acabamento dos aços. No presente estudo, foram realizadas caracterizações de amostras produzidas e manchadas em laboratório. Foram empregadas técnicas como a microscopia de força atômica, a microscopia eletrônica de varredura com canhão de emissão por efeito de campo e o espectrômetro de emissão ótica por descarga luminescente (GDOES), sendo propostos mecanismos para a formação das manchas que estariam relacionadas com a oxidação superficial do revestimento.

An investigation was carried out to determine the effect of Ca-Si additions on the dissolved oxygen content of liquid steel. An apparent equilibrium was reached after holding the melt for some time when the total oxygen content of the melt was identical with the dissolved oxygen. Results of the investigation show that for deoxidation with silicon and manganese the apparent equilibrium is reached after 8 to 12 min and the oxygen content of the melt is in good agreement with values reported in the literature for similar steel compositions. Ca-Si additions decrease the dissolved oxygen content appreciably below that obtained with Si-Mn deoxidation. It is postulated that some calcium dissolved in liquid steel at the time of its vaporization combines with dissolved oxygen to form CaO which then fluxes the manganese silicate, thereby lowering the activity of the deoxidation products. Slow flotation of calcium silicate inclusions is attributed to their slower growth rate. An addition of aluminum (to yield <0.005 pct Alsol) prior to introduction of Ca-Si improves the kinetics of removal of resulting deoxidation products. WITH the introduction of continuous casting of billets and blooms, application of calcium-containing alloys for deoxidation purposes has gained new interest. More so than in conventional ingot casting, the degree of control of the dissolved and total oxygen contents in steel for continuous casting can determine the success or failure of the operation because these affect both surface (pinholes) and internal quality of the billets. Of the available deoxidizers, only silicon has so far found wide application. However, in the typical range of application (0.20/0.30 pct Si), it is too weak a deoxidizer to suppress pinhole frequency to the level desirable for all but the least demanding appli-cations (approximately 10/50 pinholes per sq ft, de-pending on degree of subsequent reduction). On the other hand, Vincent&apos; has shown that it requires ap-proximately 0.007/0.008 pct A1 soluble in the steel to suppress pinhole formation to <10 pinholes per sq ft. In view of the difficulty of consistently maintaining this aluminum level and the associated problem of tundish nozzle constriction2 when aluminum is added to the ladle, steelmakers have searched for other de-oxidation alloys to circumvent the problem. Calcium-containing alloys offer such a possibility. When employed as a partial substitute for silicon, CaSi (30 pct Ca/60 pct Si) additions are reported to yield adequate pinhole contro1.3 Its use simultaneously preserves the "fluidity" of the steel and ensures good castability.4 Oxygen contents as low as 0.007 to 0.014 pct have been obtained with CaSi additions varying between 3 to 8 lb per ton.5-7 Due to the high degree of vaporization of calcium at the temperature of molten steel and the different methods used to introduce it into the liquid, the reported results show considerable scatter and lack of consistency. According to several investiga- deoxidation tors, the flotation characteristics of CaSi products are not as favorable as those found for alumi-num but are similar to those established for silicates with low alumina content.678 Thus, cleanliness ratings were improved when CaSi was replaced by a com-bination of Si + A1 followed by CaMnSi additions.5,9 In view of the lack of a comprehensive description of the deoxidation potential of CaSi alloys, a study was undertaken of the effect of CaSi additions on oxygen content in comparison to Si + Mn and Si + Mn + Al. The alloy chosen for this study contained 63 pct Si, 32 pct Ca, <3 pct Al, and 2.5 pct Fe. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The experiments were divided in three groups as shown in Table I. In each group, the CaSi addition was increased successively while maintaining the melt composition constant. The experiments in the third group were designed to determine the effect of prede-oxidation with small amounts of aluminum. Ingot iron, containing 0.02 to 0.03 pct C and 0.03 to 0.05 pct Mn, was melted in a 100-lb magnesia crucible. Pig iron was added to the melt under air in an induction furnace to attain the desired carbon content of 0.05 to 0.15 pct and thereby control the initial oxygen content of the melt between 0.04 and 0.015 pct. After removal of the slag, the furnace was sealed and argon was introduced through an opening in the graphite cover, Fig. 1. When the desired temperature was reached, electrolytic manganese was added to the melt and pin samples were taken (7 mm silica tubing) to establish initial oxygen content. To obtain maximum efficiency, CaSi and metallic silicon were introduced in a sealed steel pipe into the bath. This procedure assured minimum loss of calcium through vaporization as the deoxidants were always released at the bottom of the melt. Samples were taken at regular intervals and quenched in water. Temperature of the bath was measured with a Pt/Pt-10 pct Rh thermocouple. Portions of the pin sample were used for oxygen analysis; five determinations per sample were made to obtain average oxygen content. Oxygen analyses were made by the inert carrier gas fusion method with frequent cross checks with the vacuum fusion method.

This paper generalizes open stopes into elliptical cross sections and applies the results of calculations based on the mathematical theory of elasticity to indicate stress distribution on the boundaries of such stopes. These show both compressive and tensile stresses and provide an ex-planation for the development of excessive dilution in shrinkage toping. Introduction T HE stress pattern around shrinkage stopes is identical with that around other stopes under the same physical conditions. However, a shrinkage stope ends as an unsupported open stope, and the method i limited to the stress range within which the rock is generally self-supporting. If it is acceptable to generalize the outline of a shrinkage stope into an elliptical cross section, then the graphs of Geldart & Udd (1) (see also Panek (2) and Denkhaus (3)) provide a good base for approximating the stress distribution as mining progresses. Longwall minim; is a highly mechanized, high productivity mining method that is finding increasing applications in coal. Although the method would be highly advantageous in certain hard rock mining applications it cannot be applied in hard rock because no suitable cutterhead exists for such materials. The wedge longwall cutterhead is a, roller cutter device that is wedge-shaped, with cutters arranged to eliminate the very large normal force ordinarily required to cause such cutters to penetrate hard rock. However, the wedge geometry cannot be extended to a point: special nose cutters are needed to open a narrow slot for the wedge. This report describes the design, fabrication, and successful field testing of these critical nose cutters.
