This paper explores the possibility of using short-term time-dependent plate loading tests to estimate the elastic and viscoelastic parameters of the weak floor strata typically associated with coal seams in Illinois. Plate loading tests with incremental loads, similar to incremental creep experiments, were conducted until the floor failure occurred. For each increment, the load was held constant for a period ranging from 1-4 hours until a constant deformation rate was achieved. The deformation-time data were analyzed for viscoelastic parameters of weak floor strata assuming its behavior to be adequately represented by the standard Burgers model. The analysis required development of mathematical equations for the time-dependent deformation of the standard Burgers material under a three- dimensional state of stress. Time-dependent pillar settlement data at one mine were also analyzed for elastic and viscoelastic parameters of the weak floor strata using the developed equations. These parameters were compared with similar parameters estimated from plate loading tests.

China’s mineral deposits are the result of metallogenic processes associated with the geodynamic evolution of tectonic plates and eventual amalgamation into their modern configuration. The principal tectonic provinces of China comprise the North China Craton, Yangtze Craton, Cathaysia Craton, Tarim block, Altay-Tianshan-Hinggan orogens (part of the Central Asian Orogenic Bel), Central China orogens, Songpan-Ganze orogen and Alpine-Himalayan fold belts, which are part of the huge Tethysides. These tectonic elements are testimony to a complex geological history spanning more than 3000 million years. This contribution will focus on selected areas of the Altay-Tianshan, the fold belts surrounding the North China Craton and Yangtze Craton and the mineral systems along the Ailaoshan-Red River fault zone. The interlarnmelm spacing, growth rate, and degree of segregation that accompany cellular precipitation in four Fe-Zn alloys containing 9.7, 15.2, 23.5, and 30.5 at. pct Zn have been determined in the temperature range 400" to 600°C. The chemical free-energy change for the reaction was calculated from the available thermodynamic data and the known compositions of the phases. The fraction of the chemical free-energy change for equilibrium segregation that is converted into interfacial free energy decreases from 0.43 to 0.08 as the magnitude of this free-energy change increases from 35 to 270 cal per mole. At constant temperature the cellular growth rate is proportional to the cube of the dissipated free energy. At 600°C newly 100 pct of the equilibrium segregation is achieved during cellulm precipitation whereas at 400°C only 85 pct of the equilibrium segregation is attained. During cellular growth, mass transport of zinc occurs by grain boundary diffusion; excess zinc remaining in the a! phase after the completion of growth is removed slowly by volume diffusion. A modified Cahn theory of cellular precipitation predicts the observed interlamellar spacing within a factor of two. In cellular precipitation reactions such as pearlite formation or discontinuous precipitation, the basic problem is to predict the variation of growth rate G, interlamellar spacing S, and degree of segregation P with composition and temperature. To accomplish this we need three independent equations relating these quantities. One of these equations comes from the diffusion solution. To obtain two additional independent equations, some assumptions must be made. cahnl has suggested recently that two plausible assumptions are 1) that growth rate is proportional to the dissipated free energy and 2) that the spacing which occurs is that which maximizes the dissipated free energy. According to the first assumption, this spacing also maximizes the growth rate and the rate of decrease of free energy per unit area of cell boundary. The present work was undertaken to test these assumptions. To test the first assumption it is necessary to study a cellular reaction over a wide range of supersatura-tions to establish a relationship between G and the dissipated free energy at constant temperature. This is possible only in discontinuous precipitation reactions since in pearlite reactions constituents other than pearlite form if the composition of the parent phase deviates even slightly from the eutectoid composition. The Fe-Zn system was chosen for study because 1) discontinuous precipitation proceeds to completion over a wide temperature and concentration range, 2) the degree of segregation within the cell can be measured by lattice parameter measurements,2 and 3) the thermodynamics of this system have recently been determined by Wriedt.3 In this system the cells consisting d alternate lamellae of a and r phases form from supercooled iron-rich a phase. The a phase within the cells is bcc as is the original a phase, cia, but has a different orientation and a slightly lower zinc content than the original a phase. The r phase has a zinc content of about 70 at. pct and a crystal structure isomor-phous with T brass. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Four Fe-Zn alloys with 9.7, 15.2, 23.5, and 30.5 at. pct Zn were prepared from carbonyl-iron powder (400 mesh, 99.8 wt pct Fe) and zinc powder (200 mesh, 99.99 wt pct Zn). The powders were ball-milled together and cold-pressed under 60,000 psi to discs $ in. thick by $ in. diam. The cold-pressed discs of the alloys with 9.7 and 15.2 at. pct Zn were sealed in evacuated silica capsules and heated slowly to 1100°C over a period of 1 week (3 days at 600°C, then 3 days at 80O°C, then 1 day at 1100°C). The alloys with 23.5 and 30.5 at. pct Zn were treated similarly except that the final homogenization temperatures were 1000" and 85O°C, respectively, to prevent melting. The alloys were quenched in iced brine from the final homogenization temperature. Specimens of each alloy were subsequently aged in salt pots at temperatures of 400°, 450°, 500°, 550°, 600°, and 650°C for times that varied from a few minutes to several hundred hours. At a late stage of this work, an alloy containing 11.2 at. pct Zn was prepared by vapor-impregnation of iron foil with zinc vapor at 890°C. This alloy proved useful for electron microscope studies because it was free of porosity. The homogenization and aging conditions were based on the recent Fe-Zn phase diagram of Stadelmaier and Bridgers4 rather than the earlier diagram of ansen.5 They consist of a homogenization heat treatment in the homogeneous a field followed by an aging treatment in the two-phase a + r field. The aged specimens were metallographically polished and etched in 2 pct nital and the radius of the largest cell in the microstructure determined. This radius plotted vs time gave a straight line whose slope is the boundary migration rate or growth rate G of the cell. To determine the interlamellar spacing, specimens were examined by surface-replica and thin-section electron microscope techniques. Because of the irregular nature of the lamellae within the cell, the average interlamellar spacing S .of the cell was measured by the method of Cahn and Hagel,6 where S is defined by:

The pattern of mining-induced fractures ahead of stope faces in deep-level gold mines, as revealed by petroscopic observations, is described. It is shown that there are zones of fractured and unfractured rock ahead of the face, which are about I m wide and continue as discrete entities for at least 12 m parallel to the face and at least 5 m vertically. These zones do not form continuously as mining progresses, but develop from time to time, leaving a solid zone between the fractured zones. The maximum depth of fracturing ahead of the face depends on the rate of energy release.

It is explained why the bottom portion of freely suspended tubing in a pumping well buckles and straightens in succession during the pumping cycle. Field evidence of resulting rod-on-tubing wear, excessive polished rod load, and excessive horsepower are given. The possibility that buckling hastens pump wear is strongly suggested. Means for either prevention of buckling or for mini-mizing its effects are explained, their relative merits compared, and field results of their use given. These means are: tension anchors, tail pipe, sucker rod guides, and corrosion inhibitors. Charts and formulas for best use of tension anchors, tail pipe, and guides are given. Use of tension anchors, or compression anchors with a heavy tail pipe, prevents both buckling and breathing, thus improving volumetric efficiency. Without tail pipe, buckling above compression anchors precludes such improvement. INTRODUCTION It is well known that a column must be subjected to some compression in order to buckle; and also that a structural member does not buckle if subjected to a tension. When consideration is given to a tubular column, the question may be asked, "How is the buckling phenomenon affected by inside or outside pressure?' At first, it seemingly should not be affected. However, this is not so. In order to arrive at a correct deduction one should first understand the basic reasons for buckling of a column under loading*. Then he should add to the effect of that loading the effect of pressure. Following this procedure, one may discover quite unexpected phenomena. In some cases, when subjected to more pressure inside than outside, a pipe may buckle under tension. In other cases, a pipe may remain straight, although subjected to a very large compression. In 1950 and 1951 it was explained why the bottom portion of a string of pipe freely suspended in a well does not buckle even when subjected to a large compression due to buoy- ancy.2,3 It was shown that the com-monly used concept of a neutral point, as being a point in the string with neither compression nor tension, is inadequate, and a more relevant definition of the neutral point was introduced. The findings were also generalized to cases of different pressures inside and outside a pipe.3a Later, in a further generalization, allowance was made for variations of stress and pressure with depth.' The findings were applied to the new technique of hydrostatic high pressure testing of lengths of pipe in the mill.5 In 1952 it was observed that previous theoretical findings apply to tubing in pumping wells. The lower part of freely suspended tubing buckles during the upstroke portion of the pumping cycle. Later, it was ascertained that this phenomenon is responsible for wear and malfunctioning of the equipment. Various remedial measures were devised and successful field trials conducted. South African coal discards derived from feed coal for thermoprocesses pose human health and environmental problems and incur high disposal costs. These issues need to be resolved. Coal fines and a coal fines/ K2CO3 blend were combusted at 700°C in a laboratory rotary kiln to produce ashes containing metakaolinite (Al2O3.2SiO2) and illite/muscovite/orthoclase amorphous materials. The blend ash and coal fines ash, containing 18% K2O and <1% K2O respectively, were leached with water and with 1 M and 8 M NaOH at 80°C for 4 hours using a solid to liquid ratio of 1:5. The 8 M NaOH leach yielded 17% sodalite (Na8Si6Al6O24(OH)2) formation through SiO32-, Al(OH)4-, and Na+ precipitation in the leached ashes. The 1 M NaOH leach yielded no sodalite. X-ray fluorescence analysis of the original ashes and leached ashes showed low Al and Si dissolution efficiencies due to the sodalite formation. Sequential NaOH leaching resulted in the highest potassium dissolution efficiency of 89% for the ashes of fines/K2CO3 blend and 59% for the fines. It may be possible to increase the ash-derived zeolite concentration by using even higher NaOH concentrations (12–20 M NaOH) during leaching. Sodalite derived from coal ash could possibly be utilized for water purification in industrial applications, or as molecule separators. The potassium-containing liquid could be used in fertilizer manufacture.

Potassium fertilizers (potash) are mined in a handful of countries in the Northern Hemisphere. Potash is either expensive or unavailable to the farmers of the Southern Hemisphere. Alkaline alteration of K-feldspar rock (ultrapotassic syenite) in autoclave in the presence of Ca2+ generates a mixture of K-bearing calcium-aluminum-silicate-hydrate (C-A-S-H) minerals that potentially can be used as an alternative local fertilizer. This work investigates the effect of processing temperature (200 °C, 220 °C, and 230 °C) and time (from 0.5 to 3.0 h) on pH, mineralogy, and elemental availability of the C-A-S-H mineral mixture. Increasing temperature results in an increased conversion of K-feldspar and increased content of both the mineral tobermorite (Ca5Si6O16(OH)2·4H2O) and amorphous phase in the resulting C-A-S-H mixture; increasing time results in an increased conversion of α-dicalcium silicate hydrate into tobermorite. The amount of K leached from the mixture is relatively constant across all processing conditions. Hydrothermal alteration in autoclave of K-feldspar-bearing rocks such as ultrapotassic syenite permits the synthesis of a potential potassium fertilizer which alkalinity and mineralogy can be tailored according to soil requirements.

The research on this report was conducted to obtain information on the feasibility of producing ferro chromium of varying silicon and carbon contents from domestic chromite. Concentrates from the Mouat deposit were chosen because they typify the chromite found in the Stillwater complex, the largest domestic reserve, and are similar in composition to other extensive North American and foreign deposits. Batch-smelting tests designed to produce high-, medium-, and low-carbon ferrochromium were made in single phase and three-phase, electric-arc, steelmaking furnaces. Agglomeration studies were made in a rotary kiln. Continuous smelting tests were made to yield data on the production of high-carbon ferro chromium and low-carbon ferrochromium-silicon. The carbon content of high-carbon ferrochromium was lowered to the medium-carbon range by oxygen injection. Mouat stockpile concentrates were nodulized in a gas-fired rotary kiln using quartz, limestone, and fluorspar additions in the proportion necessary to flux the slag. The nodules were smelted in a continuous test using coal, coal char, and mixtures of the two consecutively as reductants.

"The role of flash flotation in precious metal recovery is reviewed. Interacting flash flotation and gravity recovery is discussed. The GRG test can be used, when linked to the behaviour of gold in grinding and classification units, to predict the recovery of GRG by flash flotation. The Cadia mill in New South Wales is used as a case study of circuit design, performance and simulation. It is shown that high throughput coarse grind applications such as Cadia require very effective fine GRG recovery systems in the primary grinding loop, which are more consistent with flash flotation than batch centrifuge concentrators (BCCs). BCCs can effectively recover a significant fraction of the GRG from flash concentrates, as predicted by laboratory testing and confirmed at a growing number of mill sites.INTRODUCTIONThe GRG test was designed to characterize Gravity Recoverable Gold (GRG) ten years ago (Woodcock and Laplante, 1993; Laplante et al, 2000), in response to the need to predict how much gold could be recovered from the main circulating load of grinding circuits using centrifuge concentration. The amount of GRG is not itself a prediction of gravity recovery: the performance of a gravity circuit nested in a circulating load also depends on the type and size of unit used, how much of the circulating load is treated, and how many times GRG is recycled and presented to the recovery circuit. The GRG test was first used in a simulator to predict gravity recovery (Laplante et al, 1995), and indeed most of the early tests targeted ores or prospective ores for which gravity recovery was an obvious match. As the test became more accepted, more and more samples returned a verdict that precluded the use of gravity recovery, or made it marginal. Typically, such ores are either copper-gold or base metal ores in which the GRG content is often fine (largely below 105 um) and ranges from 8 to 33%. Extensive simulation and plant sampling tests, either published (Laplante et al, 1997) or proprietary, show that full scale gravity recovery for these applications is generally below lo%, and can be as low as 2%. Not in all cases are such low recoveries economically unjustifiable, since there is documented evidence (Darnton et al, 1992) that a significant proportion of the gold recovered, at least in the case of base metal ores, would not have reported to the copper or zinc concentrate and received NSR credits."

"All mineral processing facilities that use girth gear driven mills need to inspect the gear teeth on a routine basis, whether it be every six months to every three years. The inspection frequency depends on gear tooth condition, and the objective is to ensure the operational integrity of the gear teeth. Conventional methods such as magnetic particle testing, visual inspection or dye penetrant examinations rely heavily on operator interpretation. At best, these techniques can determine whether a defect exists, but are unable to provide information on defect severity. This paper describes the use of combining combined eddy current array (eca) and alternating current field measurement (acfm) to provide a complete survey of all surface breaking indications on the whole gear tooth depth. This method accurately determines the size, length and depth of any cracks found on the surface.INTRODUCTION In order to gain a fundamental understanding of the evolving operational and production behavior of a piece of machinery over a specified time period as part of an effective condition monitoring program, a robust data collection process must be firmly established and adhered to. To be effectively implemented within an organization, a condition monitoring program must have support of not only the maintenance, production and engineering staffs, but also executive management support to ensure successful roll out to realize the maximum productivity of the machinery and subsequent cost-savings. One of the key elements of a mineral processing facility that use gear driven SAG Mills as a primary stage for grinding solution, is the integrity of the critical gear unit that drive the mill. For the maintenance team, condition monitoring on the gear unit is crucial for preventative maintenance. A catastrophic failure in the critical gear unit would require a minimum of ten days to replace the gear set, depending on the damage occurred. This, of course, would only be applicable if the client had a spare critical gear set in inventory. If a gear set had to be ordered, it could take from four months to two years to receive a new gear set. For example, in 2007, there was a global backlog of these types of gears sets resulting in a two year delivery. The maintenance costs associated with a catastrophic failure of this type would easily cost in the millions."

Pyrophyllite, a hydrous aluminum silicate, physically similar to talc, receives its name from the Greek word Pyr, for fire and phyllite, a rock or stone. Firestone refers to its first recorded use as firestones or hearthstones. Composition and Properties Pyrophyllite is an aluminum silicate A12O34SiO2H2O (alumina 28.3 pct, silica 66.7 [ ] pct, water 5.0 pct) (Table 1). Vanderbilt1 gives pH value of pyrophyllite as 5.6 to 8.4. Pyrophyllite is usually white or cream, though it may be found in shades of pale green, pale yellow, buff or light gray, and in darker shades and other colors principally due to oxidation of contained iron minerals. It is opaque to translucent in thin sections. Its hardness is 1 to 2 in the Mohs scale. Its specific gravity is 2.8 to 2.9. Its luster is pearly to dull; it is recognized chiefly by its micaceous structure and cleavage, and its soft greasy feel. Two other varieties occur, one in which there are radiated needles in the crystalline form, and there is also a massive homogeneous structure found. A system capable of monitoring mine electrical power systems and detecting impending component failure could significantly improve power system safety and reduce unscheduled equipment downtime. Such monitoring would require a method of evaluating electrical parameters, calculated from terminal values, for indications of component deterioration. The U.S. Bureau of Mines has targeted electrical failure of squirrel cage induction motors and examined the use of mathematical models to aid in this evaluation. The initial stage of this work is complete, and has produced polynomial networks called adaptive learning networks (ALN&apos;s) that can detect and quantify winding insulation leakage simulated on laboratory motors. In this modeling process, empirical data from laboratory motors were used to select the electrical parameters most significant for assessing motor conditions, and mathematical expressions relating these parameters to simulated deterioration were formed. ALN&apos;s developed thus far can process readily measured motor terminal information and quantify power and current levels of laboratory-simulated leakage to within 1% and 3% of full load values, respectively, for motors in the 10- to 150-hp size range. The next stage of this research is validation of these ALN&apos;s for actual motor failures; this stage is currently underway, using accelerated life testing of laboratory motors.

A implantação do LIMS (Sistemas de Gerenciamento de Informações de Laboratório) surgiu da necessidade do Laboratório ArcelorMittal Vega se atualizar tecnologicamente afim de melhorar rastreabilidade de informações e sistematizar a execução de atividades dentro do Laboratório. Os colaboradores destinavam muito tempo à manipulação de planilhas utilizadas no armazenamento e controle das análises, deixando o negócio vulnerável aos requisitos da Norma ISO / TS 16949 em todo o Laboratório. Anterior ao sistema, todo o cadastro, controle e gestão dos ensaios eram realizados em planilhas, que são mantidos pela equipe do Laboratório. Os maiores impactos no uso das planilhas são caracterizados pelos erros de transcrição de dados e cálculo manual de resultados nas diversas etapas do processo, potencializando assim a incidência de erros e muito tempo dos colaboradores envolvidos na gestão dos documentos. O trabalho demonstra o processo de implantação do LIMS no Laboratório, sua integração com equipamentos de analise e sistema de Nível 3, além de benefícios alcançados em termos de confiabilidade, redução de tempo para análises e benefícios para sistema de qualidade.

In June, 1989, the U.S. Bureau of Mines, undertook a 9-day evaluation of the tin resource potential of the Sleitat Mountain tin deposit. Significant tin-tungsten mineralization is associated with quartz-topaz-white mica-tourmaline greisen alteration of a multi-unit, 57 Ma, peraluminous, granite stock which intrudes Cretaceous Kuskokwim Group flysch deposits. The granite comprises marginal biotite-, intermediate biotite-muscovite-, and central zinnwaldite-granite units, interpreted as a zoned alteration system. Major vein mineralization is confined to two east-west-trending zones of steeply oriented tabular lenses of greisen interleaved with mildly altered granite. Cassiterite is the dominant ore mineral while arsenopyrite, loellingite, wolframite, pyrite, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, and bismuth-oxides are present in minor to trace amounts. The north and south greisen zones are estimated to contain an inferred resource of 128 to 212 million lbs Sn in 28.6 million st of mineralized rock. An 1,800-lb representative bulk sample contained 0.37% Sn, 0.04% W and 17 ppm Ag and is considered an average grade estimate for the deposit. Drill testing by Cominco Alaska Exploration indicates that substantial widths of high-grade tin mineralization are included within the lower grade disseminated mineralization. Depth of deposit erosion is substantial and there exists a high probability for placer tin deposits.

A mineral survey by the U.S. Bureau of Mines and U.S. Geological Survey indicate the Blanco Mountain RARE II area has low potential. Lode deposits consist of small, mineralized quartz or quartz-gossan veins. The veins are sparse and widely separated and lead, silver and gold content is restricted in amount and concentration. No gold or other potentially economic minerals were found in a placer deposit. There is no evidence of industrial mineral, geothermal, or energy resource potential in the study area. INTRODUCTION A mineral resource survey of the Blanco Mountain RARE II area (No. 5059), Inyo and Mono Counties, California was conducted in July 1981. This report summarizes the results and interpretations of the Bureau of Mines investigation.

"In July 1943, the Bureau of Nines received an appropriation to investigate the beneficiation of Minnesota iron ores through the use of lignite. The broad objective was to find a way to link the large deposits of lignite in North Dakota with the low-grade iron ores of Minnesota. It was proposed that sponge iron might be made through new methods of processing, and one of the objectives was to determine the possibilities of gaseous reduction of fine ore. The problem of obtaining high-hydrogen reducing gases from lignite was assigned to the Subbituminous Coal and Lignite Section of the Bureau of Mines in August 1943.Through the advice of technical consultants and men familiar with the mineral resources of Minnesota and North Dakota, a tentative program of development was outlined. The first proposal was to study the gasification of lignite briquets in a standard water-gas machine. Previous experience with gasification of lignite indicated that the raw fuel would not be suitable for use in the conventional water-gas process on account of degradation, but gasification of lignite briquets appeared possible. Through the cooperation of the Northern State Power Co„ a series of tests was made at the company's plant in Grand Forks, N. Dak., on lignite-char briquets made by the Lehigh Briquetting Co. at Dickinson, Dak. These briquets are made by the Lurgi process, and they have been used satisfactorily as a domestic fuel. The object of the tests was to compare gasification properties of lignite-char briquets with those of gas. coke made from Kentucky coal, normally used in the Grand Forks plant. The tests revealed that the lignite-char briquets were not suitable for gasification, in the standard water-gas process because of disinte-gration and low efficiency caused by loss of fine carbon.While these investigations were underway, a joint Minnesota-North Dakota Development Commission was formed to aid in planning investigations on development of mineral resources of the two States. Some members of this commission were technical men, who with consulting engineers on the Bureau's staff made up an unofficial technical committee, and assisted in solving certain problems connected with gasification of lignite and beneficiation of iron ores. This committee has been of 'real assistance in guiding the investigation.A technical meeting was held in Minneapolis on November 10 and 11, 1943, for further discussion of objectives and certain technical problems. Results of tests on lignite briquets were presented, and several reports analyzing other methods of gasification were discussed. The Reyerson-Gernes process for the continuous gasification of lignite in an externally heated retort was considered from several angles. This process differs from others in that the natural moisture in the coal is utilized to help gasify the coal, and the volatile matter is largely decomposed. Although this process had been carried out successfully in a small steel retort, no definite design for a commercial-scale retort had .been developed. It was first proposed that the process might be carried out in a Glover-West retort. However, it was brought out that a Glover-West retort would require modification to simulate the process correctly, and that good results might not be obtained even then owing to the leakage of gas through the refractory walls and to an anticipated low rate of heat transfer at the gasification temperature suitable for lignite. Further, the probable leakage of inert furnace gas into the water-gas would be adverse to the Objective to obtain a gas that could be purified to 96 percent hydrogen."

Improved analytical and graphical correlating techniques are described .
