Field measurements utilizing a seat pad accelerometer were made on 25 underground coal mining machines in order to quantify the vibration levels experienced by the operators. Those data were combined with information on the statistics of the operating times of those machines in order to compare the operator's vibration exposure to the criteria in ISO 2631, "A Guide for the Evaluation of Human Exposure to Whole Body vibration." The comparison showed that about 30% to 40" of all underground coal mining machine operators can be expected to be exposed to vibration exceeding the fatigue decreased proficiency criterion, whereas only 10 to 15% would be expected to experience vibration exceeding the exposure limit. The primary sources of the exposure are shuttle cars and possibly scoop trams. Detailed exposure statistics are presented and the implications of the results are discussed.

Emissions from pyrometallurgical processing of copper concentrates are usually subjected to wet scrubbing. The washing sulphuric acid so produced contains up to 0.2 g/L of rhenium, which is recovered by solvent extraction in the form of crude ammonia permeate (NH4ReO4). The mother liquor, obtained from the sulfuric acid wash, contains up to 35 g/L of rhenium and significant amounts of impurities. Crude rhenium salt is commonly processed by double recrystallization to produce marketable salt. A ton of high grade NH4ReO4 can be produced using 3.0-3.5 m3 of mother liquor. We propose an efficient technology of mother liquor pre-treatment aimed at removal of water-soluble organics with subsequent electrodialysis. Electrodialysis of mother liquor in a multichamber electrodialyzer resulted in the production of pure rhenium acid, from which a marketable NH4ReO4 is precipitated using ammonia solution. Multiple steps of recycling consisting of dissolution of NH4ReO4 salt, rhenium acid production from NH4ReO4 salt by electrodialysis and precipitation of NH4ReO4 from rhenium acid made it possible to upgrade the purity of obtained rhenium compounds by 1-2 orders of magnitude. A rhenium metal powder of 99.997% purity was produced by high-temperature reduction of high-purity NH4ReO4 with gaseous hydrogen. Rhenium metal powder of high purity can be produced from sulfate solutions of NH4ReO4 by non-platinum anode-based membrane electrolysis processes also. O presente trabalho teve como objetivo o estudo para otimização de distintas condições de tratamentos térmicos de solubilização e envelhecimento em liga forjada de NiTi rica em Ni visando características e propriedades adequadas para aplicações superelásticas. As características microestruturais e composicionais foram avaliadas por Difração de Raio-X (DRX), por Microscopia Eletrônica de Varredura (MEV) associada à Difração de Elétrons Retroespalhados (EBSD) e ao Espectrômetro de Energia Dispersiva de Raio-X (EDX), e correlacionadas com as medidas de dureza Vickers. Baseados em resultados da literatura, apresentou características mais promissoras para tratamentos de solubilização a 950ºC por 120 minutos conjugado com envelhecimento a 350ºC por 30 minutos, ambos com resfriamento em água.

The Bureau of Mines is often called upon to analyze the demand for various minerals and fuels and to make projections of the future demand. Because minerals and fuels are raw materials and because the demand for raw materials [pends] on the demand for finished goods, these projections are usually [conned] with derived demand rather than final demand. In order to obtain quick [d] reasonably accurate analyses of the demand for mineral commodities, the [reau] developed a method and has used it successfully (31).4 To illustrate the [thod], this report presents a full analysis of the demand for a mineral commodity with enough general theory to permit application of the method to any mineral. Sodium chloride (common table salt) was chosen as the subject of the analysis because the demand for it is less complicated5 and permits a simple application and clear presentation of the method.

O lingotamento contínuo é um processo de solidificação de aço líquido onde o conhecimento de suas variáveis é de extrema importância para a produção de aços de qualidade. Este processo contém um reator denominado distribuidor que se localiza entre a panela e o molde e tem como função tradicional, distribuir o aço que sai da panela para o molde, mas também realiza outras importantes funções. Devido a essa importância no processo, este trabalho objetivou realizar o estudo do escoamento do aço no distribuidor com duas configurações diferentes, sendo uma sem injeção de gás inerte e a outra com injeção de gás inerte. Neste estudo foram utilizados softwares para a realização das simulações matemáticas onde se podem notar as diferenças das curvas DTR, grandezas de turbulência e perfil de velocidade quando se tem ou não a injeção de gás inerte.

Crosson and Peters treat the errors that result in miner location due to errors in the overburden earth model used for computing location. A parallel effort by J. Powell of PMSRC is discussed here, where the location method used is that of the Westinghouse location program - "Miner". This location program was tested by Powell by using arrival times generated from the overburden earth model of Table l* rounded to the nearest millisecond. Location computations were then made using 3 geophones at a time. The average location is tabulated for all geophone triplets except when 3 geophones are in line. Geophone arrays were as shown in Tables 2 and 3. The manner in which the test was done is illustrated in Figure 1. I. SUMMARY OF RESULTS The arrival time differences, based on the Table 1 earth model, together with geophone locations based on the array geometries of Tables 2 and 3, were entered into the computer, together with a stated depth of 700 feet and an estimated overburden seismic velocity of 10,000 feet per second. These parameter values were processed by the location program - "Miner". Figure 2 illustrates the interpretation of the plots and data. The tabular data and plots of Table 4 and Figures 3, 4, and 5 illustrate the location error results obtained. These plots indicate that for sources within the array, the errors are considerably less than the measured errors obtained during field tests of the present location system. The possible reasons for this discrepancy are noted in Part Eight (Earth Models).

Automation in underground mining enhances safety and leads to economic efficiency. In the past many efforts have been made on the automation of longwall shearer operation. With respect to the ultimate goal of automation, ie self controlled operation, coal bed boundary detection is one of the key problems. For longwall human labor is necessary in order to detect the exact position of the coal seam to be excavated. The authors present a sensor concept based on infrared technology and pattern recognition which will solve this problem. The very harsh underground conditions set high demands on the implemented sensors. The combination of infrared sensors and powerful processing algorithms is part of the innovative concept for automation of the new Eickhoff Bergbautechnik GmbH SL 750 shearer loader. The multi-sensor automation system EiControlPlus which is designed for the complete detection of the machine environment fills in the gap in the coal-excavation automation by building a recognition system that turns the shearer loader into an 'intelligent machine' which is capable of detecting the correct position of the seam to be excavated and thus enables human-free coal mining.

IN connection with the question of coal waste and economy in mining, we would call the attention of those interested to an apparatus invented by M. Dernencourt, Superintendent of the Anzin Division of the Anzin Coal Company, North of France. This apparatus is known in France and Belgium under the name of prop screw-jack (vis botte), and has been used with good results in the above-named countries for some years past. M. Ponson gives, in his " Trait6 de I'exploitation des Mines," a description of it (page 533), but as the description given is old, the work not widely known in this country, and as some valuable improvements have been made since, I thought it might be useful to give a description of it, having seen it in 'operation in 1867, while in Europe to attend the great Exposition, and on a scientific tour to the mining districts of France, Germany, Belgium, and Italy. The prop screw-jack is composed of the following pieces : I. The body or column B, Fig. 4 [Plate (I)], of oak or yellow pine, sawed square, the bark taken off, and any length, proportionate to the vein. The smallest are 10 inches diameter at the base, and 9 inches at the top, the height being from 12 to 15 inches less than the size of the vein. In the axis of this column, and at the top end, is a cylindrical opening or hole, C, 22 inches diameter, 10 inches deep, for the screw, S. II. Two wrought-iron rings, R R, to strengthen the two extremities of the column ; the rings must be put on hot. III. A cast,-iron washer, E, with hole in centre a little larger than the screw, to be put on the top of the column, and on which the nut is to rest; the top side of this washer must be faced on the lathe, also the bottom of the nut, to prevent friction. "The Louvicourt Mine located near Val d’Or, Quebec has been in operation since 1994. It produces copper and zinc concentrates. The tailings generated from the ore processing operations have a strong net acid generating potential. Louvicourt Mine, a grass root project, was designed for closure with the best available technology at the time of design. In order to inhibit short and long time acid potential generation, sub-aqueous disposal was selected at the design stage. Given the fact that disposal in a natural lake was ruled out up front for obvious reasons related to loss of natural habitat and risks of permitting delays, a man made facility built with dams was planned. This mine includes therefore the first fully man-made sub-aqueous tailings disposal facility built in Canada. The requirement of using sub-aqueous disposal had serious implications on the placement of tailings. This tailings facility located about 9 km from the mine site has been selected based on the available natural confinement, the favorable foundation and hydrogeological conditions. This paper describes the site and the design criteria that were used. A presentation is also made on the placement technique to maximize storage and its impact on the operation of the basin. The performance of the basin, the dams and the decant structures is reviewed.Résumé : La mine Louvicourt, située près de Val d’Or, Québec est opérationnelle depuis 1994. Elle produit des concentrés de cuivre et de zinc. Les résidus générés par les opérations de traitement du minerai possèdent un fort potentiel net de génération d’acide. Le parc à résidus de la mine Louvicourt, implanté dans un milieu naturel intact, fut doté dès sa conception initiale de la meilleure technologie de fermeture disponible à l’époque, soit la déposition sous couverture aqueuse et ce, dans le but de bloquer le potentiel de génération d’acide à court et à long terme des résidus. Etant donné que la déposition dans un lac naturel fut mise de côté dès le départ pour des raisons évidentes reliées à la perte d’habitats naturels et au risque d’introduire des délais dans l’émission des permis, un étang artificiel délimité par des digues a été conçu. Cette mine fut donc la première au Canada à être dotée d’une installation anthropique de disposition des résidus sous une pleine couverture aqueuse. L’exigence d’une déposition sous couverture aqueuse a eu des implications sur le mode de mise en place des résidus. L’emplacement de l’installation de gestion des résidus a été choisi en un lieu situé à environ 9 km du concentrateur sur la base du confinement naturel disponible et des conditions hydrogéologiques et géotechniques favorables. Cet article décrit le site et les critères de conception utilisés. Une présentation est faite sur la technique de mise en place utilisée pour maximiser l’entreposage et son impact sur l’opération du bassin. La performance du bassin, des digues et des structures de décantation est également revue."

Two underground installations of the sprayfan system are described and evaluated. The spray fan proves capable of reducing by 1300 percent downtime due to high methane. Spray fan face ventilation at 20 ft brattice setback is shown to give improved methane control over conventional sprays at 10 ft setback. In addition, this report describes: ? A simple method for determining the most economical application of ventilation for face methane control ? The effect of place variables (primary ventilation, auxiliary ventilation, seam height, etc.) on methane concentrations ? The correlation of methane concentrations with brattice setback. These results are utilized to suggest a safer and more economical approach to face methane control.

Until recently, the characteristics of cast copper have seldom been studied and such study as has been made has been inadequate. The prevailing idea seems to be that since pure copper is infrequently used in the cast stlate, there is no reason for trying to establish precise data regarding the properties of the metal in that condition. On the other hand, wrought copper either in the shape of sheets or wire rarely fails in service, except as a result of the action of reducing gases at the annealing temperatures, so there is little incentive to study the properties of the cast shapes —cakes, bars, ingots and billets—for the sake of tracing the causes of failures of the wrought metal to the cast stock. However, about a decade ago, wirebars of American origin often cracked badly while being hot-rolled in mills in Germany. This Icd to four investigations: by E. Seidl and E. Schieboldll by P. Siebe12 by 0. Bauer and G. Sachs,3 and by G. Welter.4 These authors came to the conclusion that failures in hot-rolling were due essentially to the presence of a wide zone of columnar crystals between t'he thin layer of fine crystal5 near the surfaces of the bars and the large but more nearly equiaxed grains of the central core. This macrostructural defect was explained in turn by the probable upward deviation in the temperature of the metal while it was being poured into the molds of the castling machine. More recently, cast shapes of copper were investigated by X. 1'. Allenh and by C. Blazey. Allen examined vertically cast wirebars and hori-zontally cast wedge cakes of electrolytic tough-pitch copper, but only for the distribution of densities; i.e., porosity. Blazey was interested mainly in the mechanism of the variations in electrical conductivity due to cold-work and anneal, but gave introductively an account of the composi-tion and average densities of the tough-pitch horizontally cast Wirebars used. As far as the present writer can tell, no investigation mas under-taken for the sake of presenting a picture of the distribution of mechanical characteristics in the wirebars of copper, or otherwise.

Built in 1806, Boston's African Meeting House is the oldest surviving Black church building in the country. A $7 million dollar renovation was begun in 2006 to restore this historic building to its 1855 appearance and to modernize the building's accessibility, electrical and mechanical systems. As part of the restoration, an underground utility room and elevator tower, needed to provide handicap access to the Meeting House, were constructed. Extending up to 17 feet below the foundations of the abutting buildings, the utility room was constructed within one foot of some of Boston's oldest and most expensive residences. All equipment and materials had to enter the work area through a narrow alley rendering conventional methods of excavation and construction of earth support using heavy equipment unfeasible. A unique combination of micropiles, structural cap beam, internal struts and shotcrete facing was designed and constructed to provide the permanent and temporary support of the lateral loads from the earth pressures and adjacent building surcharges and the vertical loads from the elevator tower. The narrow and congested streets of the Beacon Hill neighborhood presented many day-to-day challenges for the contractor.

"A multipurpose program for a hand-held programmable TJ-59 calculator and PC-100C printer facilitates the evaluation of various mineral processing tests and the calculation of mass and metal balances. Its application is demonstrated by some example problems. Detailed user instructions are given for each application.IntroductionThe program listed in Appendix I is written for a programmable Texas Instruments TI-591 PC-100C calculator I printer combination. The program is applicable for the evaluation of:1) screen analyses;2) flotation test s; and3) mass and metal balances.Each application is demonstrated by an example problem and corresponding detailed user instructions. The ""measured"" data in the examples are fictitious and do not represent a real operation.The steps in using the program are the same for each of the three types of application, viz.:1. Enter the number of product fractions and press ""A"".2. Enter the measured weights (0) of each fraction and press ""RIS"" each time. After the last fraction has been entered, the printer automatical1y displays the total weight.3. Press ""B"" to calculate the weight distribution (Y). Once ""B"" is pressed, the printer automatically displays the weight distribution of all fractions.4. If the accumulated weight distribution (EV) is also needed, press ""RIS"". The printer now displays these data. This step is optional and may be bypassed.5. Press ""2nd A"" to prepare for entering of the measured metal assay (M).6. Enter the measured metal assays of each fraction and press ""RIS"" each time. If analytical data exist for more than one metal, each data set has to be entered separately in one sequence.7. Press ""C"" to determine the ""calculated"" head assay (MA) of all fractions.8. Press ""RIS"" to calculate the metal distribution (R). Once ""RI S"" is pressed, the printer automatically displays the metal distribution of all fractions. This operation is optinal and may be bypassed if desired.9. Again press ""RIS"" to obtain the accumulated metal distribution (ER). This operation is optional and may be bypassed.10. Press ""D"" to calculate the gangue distribution in the concentrate (W). One ""D"" is pressed, the printer automatically displays the data for all fractions. This operation is optional and may be bypassed.11. Press ""RIS"" to obtain the accumulated gangue distribution (EW). This operation is optional and ma y be bypassed.12. For more than one metal, press ""E"" to clear the memory for storing the assays of the next. Then press ""2nd A"" and start entering the assays of the next metal as described previously (6 to 11). A data-acquisition system was designed by the Bureau of Mines to monitor five detectors with radon continuously flowing through each. These detectors could be monitored up to 12 times an hour, but were only monitored according to a preset time, thus allowing radon to be monitored continuously in a uranium mine. The counter can be set to monitor each detector for any period of time up to 16.5 minutes. This allows very low concentrations to be monitored longer to reduce statistical error. There would be no upper limit in radon concentration that could be monitored, but there would be a lower limit of 50 picocuries per liter (pCi/l). Each detector was cylibrated in the laboratory by the Lucas flask method. Multiple samples were taken at two different concentrations, and the correction factor for each detector was determined by a least squares fit of the data. To verify the calibrations, a series of measurements at several concentrations were made against a constant source. Our agreement at low radon concentrations (300 pCi/i) with the two-filter method as within 3 percent; thus, the total error would be this difference plus the two-filter error. At high concentrations the coefficient of variation ranged between 2.1 and 9.8 percent for the five different detector units.

Banded iron formations (BIFs) comprise complex textures and mineralogy, which result from fluid-rock interactions related to high and low temperature alteration. The initial iron oxy hydroxide mineralogy and associated phases such as carbonates, quartz, apatite and phyllosilicates were transformed leading to an upgrading of these BIFs into the world’s largest source of iron ore. In low-grade BIFs, a large part of the iron is related to micro- and nano- metric iron-bearing inclusions within micrometric quartz and/or carbonates (mainly dolomite). We studied laminated jaspilitic BIF samples from a drill core containing 26.71 wt.% total iron, 0.2 wt.% SiO2, 0.32 wt.% MnO, 15.46 wt.% MgO, 22.32 wt.% CaO, 0.09 wt.% P2O5, < 0.05 wt.% Al2O3, 0.15 wt.% H2O and 34.08 wt.% CO2 (Aguas Claras Mine, Quadrilatero Ferrifero, Brazil). Bright rose coloured dolomite and quartz bands alternate with massive specular hematite bands. Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and FIB-TEM analyses reveal that the micro- and nanometric inclusions in dolomite are mainly hematite and minor goethite, partly occurring as clusters in voids. Curie Balance analyses were carried out at different heating steps and temperatures on whole rock samples and a synthetic mix of decarbonated sample and pure dolomite. X-ray diffraction on the products of the heating experiments shows that that hematite is stable and new phases: magnesioferrite (MgFe2O4), lime (CaO), periclase (MgO), portlandite (Ca(OH)2) and srebrodoskite (Ca2Fe2O5) were formed between 680°C and 920°C. These finding gives hints to optimizing the beneficiation process, as the presence of hydroxyl ions bearing goethite micro- and nanoinclusions lowers the sintering temperature. Prior separation of coarse hematite and barren dolomite and quartz, followed by lower temperature sintering of the inclusionbearing dolomite/quartz leads to transformations into phases with higher magnetic susceptibilities (such as hematite and magnesioferrite). The entire Fe and Fe/Mg oxide feed (the priorly separated fraction added to the sintered fraction) can then pass through wet-high intensity magnetic separation after crushing.

Roadstone production requires the generation of non-flaky material, as outlined in British Standard 812 section 105.1; with respect to this criterion, a mathematical model of a cone crusher must be able to predict the flakiness index of a particular size range as determined by the relationship between thickness and nominal size. The Whiten cone crusher model utilises breakage and classification functions to predict a product particle size distribution only, so a shape function has been proposed that is based on a phenomenological approach, taking into account the transfer between flaky and non-flaky material at each stage of breakage. The results of laboratory tests to determine material breakage characteristics and of examination of pilot-scale test products illustrate the method's potential

This Bureau of Mines publication is a literature study of the problem of spontaneous oxidation and combustion of sulfides in underground mines. It summarizes the present-day hazards, process mechanisms, and prevention and control techniques of this growing problem in underground mines. The iron sulfides generally have the greatest tendency to oxidize, particularly pyrrhotite. The presence of moisture and oxygen is essential for the oxidation reaction. Highly fractured sulfides, when found with timber or combustible refuse in slowly circulating air, pose the most serious fire hazard. Quenching with water is effective in quickly dealing with local hot spots, but ventilation at high flaw rates is the most effective and economical means for long-term prevention and control.

The potential of eccentric cone crushers for fine crushing has been improved by increasing the swing frequency of the moving cone, balancing the crusher, ensuring uniform feed via a rotating funnel with sideways discharge, introducing hyperbolic motion and employing the inertia crushing method, but further improvements to the specifications of existing cone crusher designs are limited by the rigidity of their kinematic coupling. A new design has been developed which combines two crushing modes, stone on liner and stone on stone, each with its own advantages. The main aims are to produce finer materials and to reduce liner weight. The benefits include an increase of more than 10% in the output of fine particles, improved protection of the liner against wear, as a result of filling of the cavities by material being crushed, and the use of almost 20% less material in casting of the liner. The chamber can be used in place of the usual liners of fine cone crushers
