No satisfactory theory has yet been advanced to explain what takes place when an explosive is fired in a mixture of firedamp and air. The only means of measuring the danger is to fire the explosive into the gas mixture and note the effect, but the conditions of firing must be chosen carefully. This report is presented in the hope that it will assist in determining what method to use. The experiments have been designed to show the effect of the principal factors involved in the conditions of firing, and the results give information that seems to have some value.

The minerals industry is facing a productivity and investment crisis. The ‘Millennium Super Cycle’ from 2003–2011 was an unprecedented period of growth and investment resulting in increased throughput and development of lower grade resources to meet demand. During the boom quantity became more important than quality with throughput the key metric. This was accompanied by a general trend of decreasing feed grades across all commodities that was offset with higher production volumes.Current industry perception is that feed grade depletion is an unavoidable consequence of ore deposit geology and mass mining technologies for increasingly mature mining operations. In typical crush-grind-float operations value recovery only takes place at ~1–200 micron particle size during flotation, ie 3–4 orders of magnitude size reduction compared to primary feed. For increasingly low-grade deposits the cost of energy and capital intensity required to process and reject low value material at micron scale drives poor productivity. An alternative is to deploy a range of coarse (~10–100 mm) separation and rejection technologies. Grade Engineering® is an integrated approach to coarse rejection that matches a suite of separation technologies to ore specific characteristics and compares the net value of rejecting low value components in current feed streams to existing mine plans.Coarse rejection can be used on size distributions ranging from run-of-mine (ROM) to semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) discharge. Grade Engineering® is based on five rock based ‘levers’ linked to combinations of screening, sensor-based sorting and heavy media separation. These involve exploitation of preferential grade deportment to specific size fractions during breakage: differential blasting to condition grade by size at bench scale; sensor based sorting at truck and conveyor scale; and differential particle density.Grade Engineering® is being developed and implemented by a consortium of over 30 mining companies, equipment suppliers and research organisations. Emerging results from collaborative site activities demonstrate potential for generating significant value, which can reverse the trend of declining productivity due to feed grade depletion.CITATION:Walters, S G, 2017. "In this research, image analysis technique, Kuz-Ram and KCO Models were used to examineefficiency of the quarry blasts. Investigations were performed in Cendere region, Istanbul. As a firststep, image analysis software was used to determine particle size distribution of muckpiles.Additionally, the results of KuzRam and KCO fragmentation models were compared to the results ofthe image analysis technique. The efficiency of KuzRam and KCO models was investigated and theimportant points to be considered were explained. Additionally, the effect of the rock factor valueson the size distribution curves was investigated. The blasthole diameter is 89 mm. (3.5 in) in thestudied quarry. Each measured blast has a different burden, spacing and stemming length. Blastholes was drilled in a staggered pattern. It is concluded that, KuzRam and KCO models can be successfully used to determine fragment size distribution in Cendere Region Quarries, Istanbul. Site engineers can predict blast fragmentation using the theoretical fragmentation models and they may change blast design parameters before blasting operation if necessary. It is possible to calibrate the Kuz-Ram and KCO fragmentation models using the measurements obtained by image analysis technique."

Various methods have been used to evaluate the effectiveness of shields in place. The most common method used is static recording of leg pressures by visually examining pressure gauges. In an effort to more closely examine the shield cycle and therefore the shield effectiveness, Jim Walter Resources has implemented a program of monitoring utilizing a polycorder system which is capable of recording convergence and pressure measurements on a continuous basis. This paper will discuss two longwall panels at Jim Walter Resources which have been monitored.

"The Falconbridge Limited approach to employing communication equipment is first, to determine what is required in a given situation, second, to evaluate the possible alternatives, third, to select the most suitable hardware and, fourth, to determine what modifications, if any, are required to ensure not only successful implementation but continued low-cost reliability. Two examples are examined.The first situation required remote video monitoring of an acid loadout station. Several alternatives for linking to theremote site were investigated, including hard-wired, slow-scan and microwave. A comparison of these alternatives is shown and an appraisal of the performance of the selected microwave link is presented.The second situation required direct voice contact between the two members of an underground tram crew. Alternative solutions are described and an evaluation of the selected system- SHF portable radios - is presented.ObjectivesIn general, projects must have four main objectives: (1) to improve the safety of its operations; (2) to reduce its operating and capital costs; (3) to increase the efficiency of its work force; and (4) to increase its productivity. ScopeCommunication, when used wisely, can be a good tool to achieve these objectives. Projects can be kept simple using existing technology and adapting it to a particular task. To ensure the success of the project, it was necessary: to determine the project objectives; to evaluate the possible alternatives; to select the most suitable hardware; to adapt the hardware to the application, if required; and not to provide more than is necessary.Application at FalconbridgeTo illustrate this approach, two examples of actual installations at the Sudbury Operations are presented, sulphuric acid loadout, and the Falconbridge Mine haulage system."

Marble is one of tile most beautiful and enduring materials employed in the construction industries. Because of its diverse colors, decorative patterns, and varying textures, it has furnished material for artistic architectural design for many centuries. The marble industry is described in some detail in Bureau of Mines Bulletin 106, The Technology of Marble Quarrying, which, unfortunately, is now out of print but may be consul ted at most large libraries. Onyx marble and travertine are discussed in Bureau of Mines Information Circular 6751. The purpose of this paper is to describe the main features of a distinctive group of ornamental marbles known as the serpentine marbles or verde antiques.

Ground movements can arise from a large number of sources and can have a significant effect on nearby piles and deep foundations. The loading of the piles by ground movements is a different mechanism to that arising from direct applied loading to the pile head, and consequently it is not generally possible to adequately analyze the effects of ground movements simply by applying some type of equivalent loading to the pile head. The main effects of ground movements are the development of additional movements, axial forces and bending moments in the piles, and thus the key design aspects are related to movements and to the structural integrity of the pile. However, the ultimate geotechnical load carrying capacity is generally not affected by the ground movements themselves. This paper will describe an approach to the analysis of ground movement effects on piles, considering axial and lateral movements separately. Some of the main features of pile response will be discussed for three specific problems involving ground movements: 1. Piles near and within embankments; 2. Piles near an excavation for a pile cap; 3. Piles subjected to seismic ground motions.

[Rock bursts are phenomena associated with mining operations, particularly with deep mining, although they occur throughout a wide rump, of depth, from 600 feel downward. The intensity is usually in direct proportion to the depth, varying from a loosening and sloughing off to a violent rupture, giving rise to the term, "explosive rock." The more or less violent breaking of rock in mine working, tins been variously designated as " flaking," "pressure hoists," "strain bursts," "bumps," "quakes," and "air blasts," which indicate opinions as to cause and effect. The term "air blast" lots probably beat most widely used, and naturally so, as a more or less rapid movement of air often accompanying the more violent phenomena of rock failure. Furthermore, there is an implied if not definitely expressed degree of magnitude in the action designited by a given term and in the cause and character of the action. For example. flaking, pressure bursts, and quakes are terms ranged to indicate action of increasing magnitude; and pressure bursts, strain bursts. bumps, and quakes are ranged according to the cause and character of the action.]

"Mill feed materials that are not run-of-mine ore are often a challenge for mineral processors and tend to accumulate in stockpiles, where they remain unprocessed for many years and become “slow moving inventories”. During a complete re-evaluation of the Clarabelle Mill operation (38,000 ton/day capacity) in 2000, it was concluded that there was an opportunity to assemble a 5,000 ton/day custom circuit to treat such stockpiles in the equipment that remained available during regularly scheduled maintenance shut-downs.This project was part of the larger Mill Redesign Project and involved testing the intended flowsheet under a number of operating scenarios for the first material to be treated: spent refractory bricks. The laboratory focus was on how to maximize returns using the available equipment and reagents.The circuit was successfully commissioned in the fall of 2000. As the brick stockpile was depleted, other potential feeds were evaluated at the laboratory, as well as in the new custom circuit itself. Processing of the spent refractory brick has yielded a significant contribution to the profitability of INCO. Significant opportunities lie ahead for generating more value from other slow moving inventories.INTRODUCTIONIntegrated mining operations tend to have slow moving inventories along the path from the mines to the finished products. Spent refractory bricks from furnaces and converters and furnace bottoms are materials that often end up in long-tern stockpiles. Such stockpiles are a challenge, although they represent small tonnages on an annual basis, because they are unique materials, which cannot be readily brought into the process at a rate anywhere near that at which they are produced, due to the high contents of deleterious components such as chromite or magnesia. Accumulation over years will eventually yield a metal inventory worthy of consideration given the right opportunity, such as availability of spare equipment or peak metal prices."

F. D. Richardson—The authors are to be congratulated on this further contribution to our knowledge of the thermodynamics of the interaction between sulphur and carbon and silicon in liquid iron. As the authors state, the influence of carbon and silicon on the activity coefficient of sulphur in liquid iron is clearly of great importance in the blast furnace, since it must cause a three to fourfold improvement in the partition of sulphur between slag and metal. The influence of increasing temperature in further increasing the activity coefficient of the sulphur in the metal in the blast furnace by increasing the carbon content is also of interest. This effect, however, is probably only part of the reason for the general observation in blast furnace practice, that the sulphur content of the metal is lowered by increasing temperature. Other contributing factors are the lowering of the oxygen potential in the presence of carbon by increasing temperature and the probable increase in the activity coefficient of the lime in the slag for the same reason. The former of these effects, which works via the (CaO) + [S] = (CaS) + [O] equilibrium, might possibly account for a 70 pct improvement in the sulphur partition and the latter might give a further 50 pct improvement. C. Sherman—I would like to compliment the authors on their very careful research. If I may, I would like to show results of calculations on the carbon-sulphur-iron system similar to the ones that were shown in our paper for the silicon-sulphur-iron system. For Fe-S-C ternary system k=PHgs/PH2 x 1/(f1°) (f2°) (%S) where fs = sulphur activity coefficient fs' = fs for Fe-S system of equal pct S f3° = f2/f2 for Fe-S-C ternary system This same analysis has been used on other systems, but the results shown in fie.- 7 are for carbon and silicon. L. S. Darken—I would like to make two brief comments in addition to complimenting the authors on an apparently very precise and accurate investigation. The first is that the present work is in agreement with a calculation by Larsen and myself." Our calculation (much less precise than the present work) was based on: (1) Unpublished work on the sulphur content of molten iron (1.5 pct at 1500°C) in equilibrium with graphite and an iron sulphide slag; (2) the distribution coefficient of sulphur between slag and carbon-free liquid iron. We expressed the result in a form equivalent to log 7. = 0.18 [%C] which gives an activity coefficient (?s.) of sulphur only slightly higher than the authors find and certainly within the precision of the earlier work. My second comment concerns the correlation of the thermodynamic findings with atomistics. A rough pic- ture of the atomic arrangement in the liquid solution is rather easily conceived for this particular liquid solution containing iron, carbon, and sulphur. Carbon has a very much stronger affinity for iron than for sulphur. Hence we may conclude that a sulphur atom will but seldom be adjacent to a carbon atom—since this would be a position of high energy. From the metallic radii of iron and carbon we know that six iron atoms pack neatly around one carbon atom. Thus each carbon atom in retaining this shell of iron atoms (which latter may not be replaced by sulphur on account of the high energy requirement) decreases the available positions for each sulphur atom by six. Hence each atomic percent of carbon decreases the equilibrium sulphur content by 6 pct (of itself). Or, at low concentration each atomic percent of carbon increases the activity coefficient of sulphur by 6 pct. This is in good agreement with the observed increase (6 or 7 pct at low carbon content). It is indeed gratifying to find a case where, by such simple reasoning, quantitative agreement is found between precise data and the modern picture of the atomistics of the metallic state. J. P. Morris (authors' reply)—We would like to point out that there is an error in the equation on p. 322 of the paper. The third equation should read: ½S2 (gas) + H2 (gas) = H2S (gas) The authors wish to thank everyone for the interest they have shown in the paper. In regard to the general observation in blast furnace practice, that the sulphur content of the metal is lowered by increasing the temperature, Dr. Richardson is correct in stating that the cause can be attributed only in part to the increase in activity coefficient of sulphur resulting from the rise in carbon plus silicon content of the metal with rise in temperature. However, this factor is probably an important one. The results of one experiment, performed since this report was written, indicate that at a constant temperature the addition of silicon to a melt saturated with carbon causes an increase in the activity coefficient of sulphur even though the carbon solubility is lowered. In this test, 2.5 pct silicon was added to a melt saturated with carbon and maintained at 1400°C. Although the carbon content dropped from 4.85 to 4.1 pct, the activity coefficient of sulphur was increased by about 20 pct.

According to the analysis of surface powered haulage accidents involving off-highway haul trucks in openpit mining, the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), reported 1,300 fatal accidents from 1990 to 2005. Of these, 163 were considered off-highway truck haulage accidents, and at least 23 involved collisions of an off-highway truck with a neighboring vehicle or a worker on foot (Nieto and Dagdelen, 2006). In general, an average of 18 nonfatal accidents and three fatal accidents occurred in openpit mining per year when equipment backed over the edge of an embankment, stockpile or dump point (Fessak, et al., 2003). The specific problems that need to be solved can be determined by carefully studying the accidents involving haulage trucks (Marrara, et al., 2004). Solutions to haulage truck safety must consider the human factors affecting each task even when engineering solutions seem most appropriate. In surface haulage, human performance becomes a critical issue because of the unusual demand the vehicle?s places on their human operators: ? Roadways and working areas change frequently in mining operations. ? The sheer mass of mining equipment such as trucks requires control inputs (e.g., braking) far in advance of the desired action. ? Rough roads, loading and unloading impacts can subject the driver to dangerous shocks and vibration. ? Visibility is sharply curtailed by the bulk of the vehicle generating large blind spots. All of the above issues can be attributed partially to the lack of visibility (Pyles et al., 2003). Driver visibility and communications are key issues to reduce mining truck accidents. Analysis of fatalities and injuries involving mining equipment demonstrates the need to develop new intervention and control strategies to mitigate the risks associated with mining equipment operation. Ongoing development of these and other new strategies is required to achieve a reduction of injury in the mining industry

This is the final report for U.S. Bureau of Mines contract HO-122122, which was in effect from June 30, 1972 through January 4, 1976. The work resulted in the design and construction of a large laboratory scale coal dust burner and the use of this burner to study gaseous and coal dust flammability. A new technique for determining gas phase flammability was developed and the effect of solid and gaseous suppressants on the propagation of coal dust flames was studied. In addition, a technique for measuring the C/H ratio in the flame was developed and the C/H ratio that was measured in a coal dust flame on this burner showed that the burning process was preceeded by pyroysis of the coal dust. Both experimental and theoretical studies showed that radiative trans-port is very important to the propagation of a coal dust flame.

Phase I of U.S. Bureau of Mines contract H01220S3, "Improved Sensors and Fire Control Systems for Mining Equipment, II was an investigative effort involving study of the fire problem and preliminary design of a fire protection system. Overall contract objectives included three basic efforts: * Identify problems * Develop a design * Demonstrate a system The first two efforts were conducted during the period June through November, 1972. Phase II will involve testing of system components; construction and testing of a mockup; and demonstration of the system on a truck to prove its effectiveness under actual operational and environmental conditions.

Hydraulic transport has been considered as one of the most economical methods in transferring granular materials over relatively long distances. In the natural world, it is used to transport basic material required for the support of life; in industry, it is a method widely adopted for handling materials. But the phenomena of hydraulic transport has not yet been thoroughly understood. As most of them are conditioned by a number of hydraulic and mechanical parameters, of which the basic relationships are not fully known, the traditional approach in relating these parameters to the energy requirement is purely empirical in nature. Empirical formulas, such as that proposed by Durand, (1) only give satisfactory results over a selected range of (particle size)/(pipe diameter) ratios and slurry concentration. When the case is more complicated or when new situations arise, the empirical formulas fail to give good predictory results. In fact, most of these formulas are based upon dimensional analysis, where the underlying physical interaction is not explicitly considered. Apart from the loosely related, non-dimensional groups incorporated in the formulas, there is practically no analytical means for modifying the formula so as to enable it to cope with more complex real physical situations. Although it seems quite remote that a complete rigorous solution to this highly complex problem could be generated in the near future, it is generally recognized (2, 3) that research in this area should be directed to more comprehensive studies of the obscure phenomena. Intrinsic remediation is the effect of natural attenuation mechanisms - dilution, dispersion, sorption/precipitation and biodegradation - reducing contaminant concentrations in ground water to specified levels at predetermined compliance points in the aquifer. Current monitoring and modeling for post closure was used to assess the current and long-term potential of intrinsic remediation of contaminated seepage originating from a large reactive (sulfidic) tailings impoundment near Questa, New Mexico. It is concluded that the natural attenuation mechanisms of precipitation within the tailings (as a result of buffering) and dilution/dispersion within the aquifer are currently active and likely sufficient to reduce contaminant concentrations to below state standards in the long-term. Other natural attenuation mechanisms such as sorption and biodegradation within the receiving aquife4s) were not assessed here, but are likely further reducing contaminant concentrations. Active interception and recovery of the seepage water is being maintained until monitoring demonstrates that intrinsic remediation has successfully achieved the level of water quality control required.

Thermo-Calc software was used to investigate the phase diagram of the calcium silicon (Ca–Si) system for the range of Si mass percent 0–100, and temperature range T = 200–1800 K. The melting points of Ca and Si deduced from the phase diagram are very close to the values obtained experimentally. Three stable intermediate solid phases were found, which are Ca2Si, CaSi, and CaSi2, where the first one appeared in the Ca rich side of the phase diagram, and the third one in the Si rich side. In addition, three eutectic points were found at Si mass percents of 3.95, 33.00, 62, and temperatures T = 1048.7, 1519.14, 1308.5 K respectively. Atomic Si (Diamond structure) is found mixed with CaSi2 intermediate phase for temperatures less than 1305 K, and mixed with a liquid CaSi for higher temperatures. These results are important for thermodynamic and metallurgic studies of these intermediate phases.

The usual reaction product for the monotectic reaction in the Bi-Se system consists of rod -shaped particles of selenium-rich liquid embedded in a single crystal matrix of At certain crystallo-graphic orientations of the matrix with respect to the reaction interface, more complex shapes are as -sumed by the liquid particles. This reaction has been examined at different growth rates and relative crystallographic orientations of the matrix with respect to the reaction interface. The uhriation in auerage particle size of the liquid phase with reaction rate has been determined at one crystallograpIzic orientation of the matrix. On a plot of logarithm of average particle diameter vs logarithm of reaction rate, data points for crystals grown at rates of 10- to 1.0 cm per hr fall near a curve of slobe -0.4. MONOTECTIC reactions in binary alloy systems are reactions of the eutectic class in which, as the system is cooled through the three-phase reaction isotherm, one liquid phase (L) decomposes to a solid phase and another liquid phase (LII).' A partial phase diagram, as taken from Hansen, showing the monotectic reaction in the Bi-Se system is given in Fig. 1. This diagram specifies the monotectic point at 618°C and 72 at. pct Se, and the monotectic reaction products as the intermetallic Bi Se3 and a liquid (LII) which contains approximately 98 at. pct Se. At a lower temperature, 217°C, this liquid may undergo a eutectic reaction in which the reaction products are BizSe3 and crystalline selenium. However, under conditions of rapid cooling, or quenching, from above 217°C, this selenium-rich liquid may be partially retained to room temperature in an amorphous or glassy state. The intermetallic BizSe3 is rhombohedral, of the space group jm;' however, for convenience it is usually represented by a hexagonal struture. A pronounced plane of cleavage, which lies perpendicular to the main axis of the rhombohedral unit cell or parallel to the basal plane of the hexagonal cell, exists in the structure. The usual monotectic reaction product consists of rod-like particles of LII embedded in a single-crystal matrix of BizSe3, although at certain crystallographic orientations of the matrix BizSe3 other more complex shapes are assumed by LII. A similar rod-like, or cylindrical, morphology for the carbide phase has been reported by westbrook7 in the a Cr-Crz3Ce eutectic structure. In this paper the morphological characteristics of the LII particles, as retained to room temperature, have been examined under conditions of varying growth rate and crystallographic orientation of the matrix BizSe3 with respect to the growth direction. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Alloy specimens corresponding to the monotectic composition, 72 at. pct, or 50 w pct Se, were prepared from 99.999 pct pure bismuth and selenium obtained from the American Smelting and Refining Co. The two elements, corresponding to a total specimen weight of approximately 30 g, were encapsulated in 13 mm OD Vycor tubing under a vacuum of 5 x X mm of Hg. Manitoba Mining and Milling operations consist of three underground mines (Thompson T1, T3 and Birchtree), feeding the Thompson Mill. Three years ago, a collaborative effort involving Mines Exploration, Mines Project Development Group, Mill Technical Services and Vale Base Metals Technical Excellence Center was initiated to establish and verify the cause of high variability in concentrate quality and Ni recovery at the Thompson Mill. One outcome of this work was a program to systematically characterize the mineralogy and metallurgical performance of current and future orebodies feeding the mill. Mineralogy results show that high value enabling ores typically have a high pentlandite to pyrrhotite ratio and benign silicate mineralogy (mostly quartz and feldspar from sedimentary host rocks), while metallurgically challenging ores contain some combination of pyrite and/or hexagonal (non-magnetic) pyrrhotite and/or elevated quantities of talc (with associated carbonates) derived from altered ultramafic host rocks. The metallurgical performance of these two ore types has been simulated by an Excel particle flotation model, which calculates the relative floatability of particles based on the particle’s mineral composition and mineral locking determined from MLA images. The relationship between these mineral properties measured by MLA and metallurgical performance was established using 13 monthly composite samples from Thompson Mill. The model was then validated with results of laboratory flotation experiments on individual orebodies submitted for evaluation. The validated model can be used to predict plant metallurgical performance based on individual ore bodies feeding the mill. Individual orebody’s grade-recovery curves are assumed to be additive, and can be weighted in proportion to the mill feed to predict mill recovery over the same time period. The ore mixing can be done with a simple Excel spreadsheet and comes with a graphical output for easy visualization of the resulting grade-recovery curve.
