"The investigation is dedicated to study of biohydrometallurgical processing of refractory gold-arsenic concentrate with the large content of pyrrhotite. Sulfide concentrate of chemical constituents: 75g/t Au, 4,7g/t Ag, 6,3% As, 29,3% S, 2,3% Sb, 0,5% ? (organic) and of mineral composition, %: 11,8 arsenopyrite, 39 pyrrhotite, 12 pyrite, 2,9 antimonite and the rest – aluminosilicates, carbonates and quartz, was studied. The recovery of gold from concentrate by cyanidation is 51,2%. The rest of gold is embedded as finegraded segregation in sulfides.Sulfide oxidation process study is described. Bacterial oxidation was executed on a pilot laboratory unit using combined autotrophic bacterium: A. thiooxidans , A. ferrooxidans, Leptospirillum ferrooxidans and sulfobacillus thermosulfidooxidation, pH=1,5-2,2, t=28-32?C, oxidation time 120 hours. Pyrrhotite is the least stable sulfide mineral with electrode potential 0,45V versus arsenopyrite (0,55 V) and pyrite (0,55-0,6 V) and is oxidated primarily. Pyrrhotite oxidation is followed by large amount of elemental sulphur, which has a bad influence on cyanidation.It’s established that the rate of arsenopyrite (for the first 48 hours) from concentrate containing 39% pyrrhotite is 2-3 times as less as the rate of arsenopyrite bio-oxidation from concentrate without pyrrhotite. The arsenopyrite bio-oxidation is accelerated only after the elemental sulfur was oxidized by bacterium A. thiooxidans and elemental sulfur percentage was reduced from 6,8 to 3,9%. The bacterium concentration is increased from 2,5x107 to 2,5x109 cells/ml. Almost full oxidation of arsenopyrite (98%) and pyrrhotite (98- 99%) is finished in 120 hours. We have studied two pretreatment methods for elimination sulfur content influence on cyanidation: aeration in lime and electrochemical treatment. Such an operation enables to have supplemental oxidation of elemental sulfur and other oxygen and cyanide absorbants before cyanidation. After treatment the content of elemental sulfur was decreased from 3,9 to 2,2%, gold recovery from 90 to 96% and cyanide consumption from 16,2 to 7,2 kg/t decreases. The content of toxical rhodonite-ions in liquid phase of pulp and disinfection reagents consumption were decreased as result of elemental sulfur content in bio-oxidated product reduction."

A indústria siderúrgica na América do Sul tem sido desafiada desde a crise econômica mundial do final de 2008, como as demais siderúrgicas ao redor do mundo. O cenário de continua degradação das matérias primas, em especial o minério de ferro e a necessidade de reduzir custos, considerando que cerca de 70% do mesmo está relacionado à produção de gusa, atuando em direção oposta, torna este desafio maior ainda. Operar um Alto Forno com elevadas taxas de injeção de carvão (mais que 180 kg/t de gusa) e baixo taxa de combustíveis (menor que 490 kg/t de gusa), considerando a elevação da taxa de geração de escória devido a matéria prima em degradação (~300 kg/t de gusa) torna-se obrigatório ter estabilidade operacional por meio de boas práticas operacionais suportado por adequado sistema de manutenção centrado em confiabilidade (RCM). Este trabalho objetiva mostrar como a ArcelorMittal planta de Tubarão está enfrentando esta situação, visando atingir os objetivos citados anteriormente.

O objetivo desse trabalho foi comparar, por simulação termoquímica, o impacto relativo nos consumos de CV granulado enfornado pelo topo, utilizando CV produzido por fornos retangulares de alvenaria e CV obtido no reator de carbonização contínua da Vallourec, o Carboval. A qualidade siderúrgica superior do CV Carboval permitiu reduzir o consumo específico de CV granulado em 18,2kg/t que, somando ao melhor rendimento gravimétrico e menor geração de frações finas, torna atrativa e viável esta tecnologia. Estas vantagens impulsionam o setor a sair do artesanal para o industrial na produção de CV.

Located in North West Tanzania, Buzwagi is an underground narrow-vein gold mine owned by Barrick Gold. The plant was commissioned in 2000. The reserves are estimated to be more than 25 years. The ore, containing gold, silver and copper mineralization in sulphides, is processed at 3,300 tpd. This paper presents the results of an investigation to determine the performance of an ammonia-cyanide leaching approach to recover gold from two samples. Coarse gold was recovered by gravity prior to leaching. The gravity tailings had the following composition; 1.97 g/t Au and 0.31% copper for the medium cyanide soluble copper (MCSC) sample and 2.80 g/t Au and 0.53% Cu for the high cyanide soluble copper (HCSC) sample. Experiments were conducted for 72 hours in stirred tank reactors with monitoring and control of parameters. The straight cyanidation produced gold extractions of 76.1% for the MCSC sample and 84.6% for the HCSC sample. Associated cyanide additions were 6.1 kg/t and 11.5 kg/t respectively. The gold extraction of the MCSC sample was improved to 88.8% using 350 ppm NaCN and 700 ppm ammonia. The associated cyanide and ammonia additions were 2.5 kg/t and 1.7 kg/t respectively. For the HCSC sample, 82.5% gold extraction was obtained using 500 ppm NaCN and 600 ppm ammonia. The cyanide addition and ammonia additions were reduced to 3.8 kg/t and 1.0 kg/t respectively. No significant decrease in gold extraction was noticed when the cyanide and ammonia were reduced to 150 ppm and 500 ppm respectively. In the presence of ammonia, a significant amount of cyanide was oxidized to cyanate by the cupric ion. In the absence of ammonia, the formation of copper cyanide was the predominant reaction responsible for consumption of cyanide.

Attempt has been made to determine the nature of charge on activated carbon surface by studying the electro-kinetic properties of the carbon in the presence of cations, anions and aurocyanide solutions. The zeta-potential measurements were made in the presence of individual ions and also in combinations. The cations and anions chosen were those commonly associated with gold bearing ores in Kalgoorlie area. It was found that the iso-electric point of Norit Carbon was at pH 4.45; below this pH the charge was positive, while above, it was negative. In the absence of gold cyanide solutions and in the presence of individual cations the i.e.p. shifted to the alkaline range (pH 7.2-8.5) while in the presence of anions the i.e.p. was shifted to less than pH 3.5. In the presence of aurocyanide solutions, the iso-electric point was still in the acid region irrespective of whether anions or cations were present. The probable mechanism for such a behaviour has been attempted after measuring the specific conductivities of solutions before and after gold adsorption, by studies using the electron- probe-mirco-analyser, and S.E.M. on the carbon surface.

Confirmation of the relationship noted above was provided by fitting experimental stress-strain data5 for 304 stainless steel (total strain from 0.072 to 1.15) at room temperature at a true total strain rate of 4 x 10-3 sec-1 to Eqs. [I] and [3]. In this study nonlinear regression analyses were used to evaluate the equation constants. The results of this evaluation are presented in Table I. When these constants are used in Eqs. [I] and [3] the curves obtained are coincident. It will also be noted that the value of n is equal to YE,, the value of a is equal to so, and the value of b is equal to (s8 - so)/Ec. These equalities are illustrated in Table I where the Voce constants in parentheses were calculated from a, b, and n values. Excellent agreement is seen to exist. It is concluded, therefore, that the Voce equation is, indeed, identical to the linear expression involving generalized strain. In applying the generalized strain concept to stress-strain data, it has been noted3 that data within what was termed the transition region (first few points in the plastic flow region) must be excluded from the analysis in order to obtain the linearity in Eq. [3]. A similar exclusion applies in the use of the Voce equation since an expression which would describe the strain-hardening region would usually be found to be not too effective in the elastic-plastic fillet2 which connects the elastic line to the strain-hardening region. These considerations further substantiate that Eqs. [I] and [3] do indeed describe identical behavior. Note added in proof. Since this manuscript was submitted for publication, correspondence with Professor S. R. Davies, University of Edinburgh, (of Ref. 3) indicated that his associates have also confirmed the identity between the Voce equation and the generalized strain concept. It is sometimes desirable to obtain a small grain size in super-purity metals. Unfortunately, the absence of impurities, the low recrystallization temperatures, and the low activation energies for boundary motion result in rapid growth of relatively few grains when conventional recrystallization practices are used. For example, Arajs et al.1 were unable to obtain a mean grain diameter less than about 0.4 mm in iron containing 38 at. ppm of impurity. The <1 at. ppm purity range in many modern superpurity metals results in yet larger limiting grain sizes. It is the purpose of this communication to describe a technique by which mean grain diameters as small as 30 µ have been produced in aluminum having an impurity content < 0.5 at. ppm. The technique should be applicable to superpurity metals other than aluminum and has potential applications to grain refinement of commercial alloys. The necessary and sufficient requirements for production of a small grain size are as follows: a) a large number of potential nucleating sites must be created randomly within the cold worked material, b) sufficient thermal energy must be provided at a rate that will simultaneously activate a large fraction of the potential nuclei, and c) the grain growth must be stopped shortly after grain impingement.&apos; A high density of potential grain nuclei may be cre-

The focus of this research was to evaluate the synergistic effect of bis(2,4,4-trimethylpentyl) phosphinic acid (CYANEX 272) and di-(2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid (D2EHPA), diluted in kerosene, on the extraction and separation of Co(II) and Li(I) from synthetic sulfate solution. The results indicated that using a mixture of CYANEX 272 and D2EHPA was efficient in extracting and separating Co(II) from Li(I). The optimum ratio of CYANEX 272/D2EHPA was found to be 5:1, in which the highest separation factor was obtained (5973.23), and ΔpH0.5 was 4.10. Adding tributyl phosphate (TBP) as a modifier and increasing the temperature improved the metals’ separation rate and extraction efficiency. Thermodynamic studies were also carried out, and ΔH, ΔS, and ΔG values were computed, revealing the endothermic nature of Co(II) and Li(I) extraction by CYANEX 272/D2EHPA mixture. The conducted experiments for the McCabe–Thiele diagram showed the possibility of using two stages to extract over 99% of Co(II) and Li(I). Slope analysis and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) were employed to comprehend the Co(II) and Li(I) extraction mechanism using a mixture of CYANEX 272 and D2EHPA.

IT is known&apos;" that secondary recrystallization occurs in copper sheet with at least 90 pct reduction after annealing at high temperatures, 700" to 1000°C. Turkalo and Turnbull4 have found recently that secondary recrystallization might occur even after annealing at such low temperatures as 500°C for a high purity, coarse-grained copper sheet. It will be shown in the following that in an electrolytic tough pitch copper wire, with a high degree of deformation, secondary recrystallization might occur at even lower temperatures. A hot-rolled rod of 9.5 mm diam (temperature at which rolling commenced was 850°C) was drawn in continuous drawing machines to 0.4 mm, corresponding to a cross-section reduction of 99.8 pct. The texture in the center of the wire (the sample for X-ray analysis was etched to 0.15 mm diam) is a mixture of the [111] and the [loo] direction, as can be seen from Fig. 1. This is in accordance with the result of Schmid and Wassermann.&apos; After a few minutes annealing of the wire at 200 °C, there is a noticeable recrystallization of the structure with a preferred orientation in the [l00] direction at the expense of the [Ill] deformation texture, as Figs. 2 and 3 show. Farnham and OINeill" reported a similar result. The final recrystallized structure shows mainly the [loo] orientation. There is however a small amount of [111] and random orientations. If the wire is annealed at 400°C, the recrystallized structure first shows a [loo] texture, Fig. 4, but as the annealing time is increased the fine-grained structure transforms into coarse grains, Fig. 5, giving a new preferred orientation, Fig. 6. The calculations show this to correspond to the [I121 direction. Even if the annealing that gives the primary recrystallization is carried out for six weeks at 20O°C, the same secondary recrystallization texture is obtained if the annealing is continued at 400°C. Production of crude oil in Tennessee during 1940 was slightly more than 15,000 bbl., a decrease from 1939 of about 36,000 bbl. This sharp decline has been caused largely by curtailed activities in the shallow pools in Clay County, where approximately 3000 bbl. was marketed off the lease during the year as against more than 37,000 bbl. in 1939. The flashy production found in 1938 in the Celina area has been short-lived and the area is essentially abandoned. Failure to find steady production has been the major factor retarding developments in the northeastern Highland Rim area. The Mississippi lime production in Scott and Morgan Counties continued to show a steady decline. The Tennessee production by counties is shown in Table I. This test encountered only slight shows of oil in the producing horizons of the near-by Coon Hollow and Boone Camp pools. Some surface work was carried on by private interests during the year in Scott and Morgan Counties and two wells were spudded in early in 1941 The revival of interest in the Kentucky portion of the plateau will probably result in increased activity in this part of Tennessee during 1941. Several sizable blocks of acreage, some by major oil companies, are held in Scott, Morgan, and Cumberland Counties. Middle Tennessee.—The northeastern Highland Rim continued to be the most active area in the state with 20 completions, although this figure is about one third of the number drilled in 1939. The Clay County producer was an old test drilled deeper in which oil was found at 671 ft. in the upper part of the Stones River group of limestones, a common pay in this area. Deeper testing into the Knox dolomite group in this area was not particularly encouraging, although one well in Fentress County encountered some saturation at 1860 to 1869 ft. in the upper

A busca na melhoria da qualidade dos aços, principalmente no caso de aços limpos, fez com que o distribuidor de lingotamento continuo também seja empregado para a remoção das inclusões responsáveis por prejudicar as propriedades mecânicas dos aços. Uma melhor eficiência desta função do distribuidor pode ser atingida com o conhecimento das características do escoamento do banho metálico de modo que se possam propor modificações na configuração do distribuidor. Esses fenômenos de escoamento e remoção de inclusões podem ser simulados mediante a utilização da modelagem física. O objetivo deste trabalho é avaliar quatro configurações internas de distribuidor por meio da qualificação do escoamento via ensaio de linhas de fluxo e quantificação de inclusões passantes pelo veio com o ensaio de remoção de inclusões. As variáveis de controle utilizadas neste estudo são: velocidade de lingotamento, presença de barreiras e presença de tubo longo. Os resultados apresentados para o distribuidor em questão mostram que para os casos com o tubo longo, o uso da barreira torna o escoamento predominantemente ascendente eliminando o curto-circuito e favorável a remoção de inclusões passando de 29,76 para 24,29% de inclusões passantes pelo veio. Enquanto que para os casos sem tubo longo, o uso da barreira proposta diminuiu o contato do aço com a escória sobrenadante, aumentou o curto-circuito e aumentou também o percentual de inclusões passantes pelo veio de 2,56 para 3,01%.

A model for the low-temperature peak, LTP, in fcc metals is presented. In high stacking fault energy metals, e.g., aluminum and nickel, it is proposed that a reversible dislocation glide and climb process might give rise to the observed high relaxation strengths and activation energies equivalent to volume self-diffusion values. In low stacking fault energy metals such as copper, gold, and silver, dislocation climb is energetically unfavorable at T < 0.5 Tm and the relaxation process is therefore mainly one of reversible glide. This model is used to explain the effect of a change in grain size and impurities on the LTP. THE low-temperature grain boundary damping peak, LTP, in spectroscopically pure aluminum,&apos; copper,17&apos; gold,2 nickel,3 and silver4 has recently been the subject of a detailed investigation by our laboratory. The main results are summarized in Table I. An empirical relationship was found between the peak relaxation strength, AE, and the width of the dissociated dislocation, do,* given by: do = µa2/24p? (Ref. 5) [I] where p is the shear modulus, y is the stacking fault energy,6-8 and a is the lattice parameter, Table 11. 4E is plotted against do in Fig. 1. Two regions are apparent: region (a)! which contains all but one of the metals, where AE decreases linearly with increasing do, i.e,, AE 1/do; and region (b), where ?E is approximately independent of do. A similar trend is observed when the ratio Qp/QL is plotted as a function of do, Fig. 2. (Qp and Ql are the activation energies for the peak and for lattice diffusion, respectively). In the past, when Qp and QL were found to be comparable, the relaxation peak was explained in terms of grain boundary sliding.10 The equivalence of Q, and Qb. the activation energy for grain boundary diffusion, prompted the suggestion that it was a consequence of reversible grain boundary migration on an atomic scale." A new model for the LTP, which is based on the experimental relationships in Figs. 1 and 2, is presented. In region (a) it is suggested that stress relaxation occurs through the reversible glide and climb of grain boundary dislocations; in region (b) only reversible glide can take place. The resultant effect on the grain boundary might be sliding or "a bowing out", but, since the total distance moved will be 50A, the atomic movements are considered of primary im- portance. It must be emphasized that this is only a qualitative model, but at the moment it appears the most likely way to explain the widely varying, but re-

"Compound semiconductor, ZnTe, was electrodeposited in an acidic solution with K2TeO3, ZnSO4 and Na2SO4 solution. Since the reduction potential Te(IV)/Te(O) is remarkably noble from the solution comparing to Zn(II)/Zn(O), code position of Te and Zn was thought to be difficult from this solution. Resulting from EQCM analysis, furthermore, Te(IV) reduced to Te(O) and Te(-II) in this order so that Te catholically dissolved from the electrode surface at more negative potential. But ZnTe alloy were formed by the UPD of Zn at -0.7V at 298K on Te surface in lmM K2TeO3, 100mM ZnSO4 and 100mM Na2SO4 solution adjusted at pH 4. Content of Te in the deposits is, however, more than 80%.Electrolytic temperature is well known to affect on the deposits characteristics. The higher bath temperature was, the better ZnTe crystal was detected in this study. Thermal electrode method is a. process of heating only substrate by flowing ac current in substrate. This process makes the surface temperature of substrate higher than boiling point of the solution, 373K. From EDX analysis, deposits without thermal current were Te-rich, Te content in the deposits with thermal current decreased with increasing of thermal current. Te content was 62% for 5A ac current, 51 % for I OA and 45% for 20A, respectively. The deposits that produced with ac current of IOA were closed to the stoichiometric ratio, i.e. ZnTe.Consequently, thermal electrode method is more effective to obtain a good crystallized ZnTe without heat treatment after deposition.IntroductionThe current subject of solar cell materials is silicon. Compound semiconductors including GaAs and II-VI group are generally used in the developing field of digital information such as the rapid cellular phone and car telephone. Compound semiconductors consist of more than 2 kinds of element. There are many materials for these compound semiconductors such a SiC, InSb, CdS for binary system and CuinSe2 for ternary system. It becomes generally difficult, to produce high quality crystal with increasing of kinds of element due to a complicated structure and a compound ratio of element. Semiconductor materials as a device are usually simple binary compounds and/or these mixed crystals. Properties of compound semiconductors have variety of the forbidden band and lattice constant and that can be change easily by addition of another element for the usage of the solar cell. Since most compound semiconductors are direct interband transition type, which has steep optics absorption edge and large light absorption coefficient."

Segregation can occur only in cast alloys that solidify over a range of temperatures with a difference in composition of liquid and solid phases within this range (ignoring monotectic systems and chemical reactions as in rimming steels). Thus a pure binary eutectic alloy should show no segregation unless undercooling occurs for one of the solid constituents of the eutectic; e.g., chill-cast Al-I2 per cent Si alloys. The phasial condition implicitly described above—solidification over a range of temperatures with a compositional difference between solid and liquid—is found in nearly all solid solutions or combinations of solid solutions and eutec-tics, Metastable conditions of solidification of these types of alloys cause coring; i.e., a difference in composition between the center of a dendrite and its periphery. This composition gradient can be detected usually only by microscopic examination of etched structures; it is a "micro" effect. The gradient of more immediate industrial concern is that between the center of a cast section and the surface layers. This gross (macro) effect is usually deter-minable only by sampling of the casting at different points, with chemical analyses of each sample. If the compositional difference is of the same type as in coring, the first parts to freeze being enriched in higher-melting-point constituents, and vice versa, the effect is called normal segregation. When what is apparently the first part of the casting to solidify shows a higher concentration of low-melting-point constituents, the effect is called inverse segregation. These macro effects are quite separate from the micro effect, coring, yet the latter must be described first because it is an essential part of the picture. Coring Solid Solution, Ni-Cu The nickel-copper phase diagram is reproduced in Fig. Ia, in which the solid lines represent the equilibrium liquidus I, 3, 7 and solidus 2, 5, 8, and where the vertical I, 4: 8 represents a 55 per cent Cu alloy. Upon moderately rapid solidification, the first dendritic axes of composition 2 (see Fig. Ib) start to form at a temperature somewhat under I. Solidification continues by growth of the dendritic nuclei, but at temperature 4 the increment solidifying is of composition 5. The rapidity of this crystal growth prevents diffusion of nickel and copper atoms from adjusting the composition of the entire dendrite at 5, which it would be under equilibrium conditions. As ligas de alumínio da série 7XXX são largamente utilizadas no setor aeronáutico devido sua alta razão resistência mecânica / densidade. O que proporciona uma alta resistência mecânica para as ligas da série 7XXX é a adição de elementos de ligas e tratamentos térmicos adequados, como por exemplo o T7351. Este trabalho teve como objetivo, estudar a evolução microestrutural de uma liga de alumínio 7475-T7351 processada por laminação convencional a temperatura ambiente, e posteriormente submetida a tratamentos térmicos de recozimento para recristalização. De acordo com os resultados apresentados, a amostra que foi submetida ao tratamento térmico de recozimento para recristalização a temperatura de 500ºC durante 15 minutos recristalizou, enquanto que a amostra que foi tratada a 350ºC durante 1500 minutos teve coalescimento dos precipitados.

The Fiji Islands are remnants of a once continuous Solomon-Vanuatu-Fiji-Tonga volcanic arc (the Vitiaz arc), located at the boundary between the Indian-Australian and Pacific plates. They record a history of (i) arc volcanism the late Eocene to late Miocene, (ii) an extensive magmatic response to arc rifting (5.5-3.OMa) during which volcanism was dominated by shoshonitic to tholeiitic basalts, and as rifting continued, (iii) a transition from arc to intraplate volcanism. The Hunter Ridge-Hunter Fracture Zone separates the inactive South Fiji Basin from the actively spreading North Fiji Basin, and has been considered to be a transform zone, almost parallel to the motion vector of the Australian plate. However rocks dredged during the 1993 `Alize&apos; cruise, from along the northern part of the Hunter Ridge are typical arc tholeiites, and therefore demand that subduction has occurred beneath the Hunter Ridge sometime during the last û 5Ma.

Por esses motivos, muitos estudos têm sido realizados para melhorar o controle do tamanho, quantidade, forma, distribuição e composição das inclusões. Especificamente para as inclusões de espinélio MgO·Al2O3, ainda é preciso melhorar o entendimento dos fenômenos sobre a formação e modificação destas inclusões para um melhor controle ao longo do processo de fabricação do aço e obter maior limpidez inclusionária nos aços. Assim, neste trabalho, foram revisados tópicos reportados na literatura relacionados com: a formação, influência da composição da escória e modificação com cálcio das inclusões de espinélio.

"A thermodynamic study of the equilibrium phase assemblage AgBi3S5-Bi2S3-S was made by an EMF-technique, using the RbAg4l5 solid electrolyte. The ternary phase was synthesized from the pure Ag2S and Bi2S3 in an evacuated silica ampoule and grinded into powder and mixed with appropriate compositions of B12S3 and S, in a series of experiments, for pressing in to pellets. The pellets were assembled to form the galvanic cells Pt (-) | Ag ] RbAg4ls | AgBi3S5+ Bi2S3 + S + (C) I Pt (+). The EMF-measurements were made in the temperature range 299 - 460 K.In this paper, thermodynamic functions of the ternary phase AgBi3S5 (pavonite) have been determined. The agreement between the obtained results and the literature values were established.IntroductionThe complex group of ore minerals constitutes from trace amounts to a major proportions of sulfosalts. Although the sulfosalts rarely form massive ore bodies, they are commonly associated with rich sulfide ore minerals for the base and precious metals and widely distributed in a metal poor sulfide minerals [1]. For instance, Ag-bearing sulfosalts are encountered in ore minerals for the production of the base metals and are common sources of silver. Nevertheless, thermodynamic properties of the sulfosalts are poorly known.Reliable thermochemical data are essential for quantitative modeling of the chemical behavior of the sulfosalts in equilibrium with sulfides, which in turn would promote the optimization of complex minerals treatment and extractive metallurgy of the valuable metals."

Studies of the transformation of aus-tenite at constant subcritical temperatures have been numerous since the work of Davenport and Rain.&apos; Considerable information has been obtained on low-alloy steels and on high-carbon alloys containing undissolved carbide or graphite at the austenitizing temperature. Little is known of the isothermal transformation of aus-tenite containing in solution large amounts of both carbon and a single alloying element. In this investigation four steels containing one per cent carbon and with chromium in the range 3 to 9 per cent have been examined with the view to establishing the fundamental character of the isothermal reactions when all carbon and chromium are initially in solution in austenite. Experimental Procedure Alloys The chemical compositions of the steels investigated are given in Table I. The 4 per cent Cr alloy is a commercial steel. The other steels were made by the Carpenter Steel Co. as 50-lb., induction-furnace heats and rolled to 5/8 -in. round bars. Bars were softened at 650&apos; to 700°C. before the specimens were cut. Most of the lines on the transformation diagrams presented here have been placed on the basis of the microscopic examinatioll of partially reacted specimens, Thees specimens were approximately 1/2 by 1/4 by 1/8 in. ill size, specimens of the 9 per cent cr steel were held 10 to 12 hr, at 1200°to 1225°C. before quenching to the various subcritical temperatures. The other steels were held for 2 to 2 1/2 hr. at 12ooOC. before quenching. These treatments, carried out in an atmosphere of purified nitrogen, produced an austenite grain size larger than A.S.T.M. So. I, some grains being 1 to 2 mm. in diameter. There were a few undissolved carbide particles in some specimens of the 9 per cent Cr steel. It is believed, however, that any errors in the results due to incomplete solution of carbon and chromium in austenite are negligible; that is, austenite compositions may be considered as being those listed ill Table I. Dense medium cyclones have been in use for washing coarse and small coals for more than 50 years. There have been modifications in its design and today these units have become indispensable for washing of Indian coals possessing difficult washing characteristics. About 53 percent of the Indian coals (coking and non-coking) are being washed in jigs, about 38 per cent are washed in dense medium cyclones while the remaining 9 per cent is treated in other units like Barrel Washers, Heavy Media Baths and Drum Separators etc. The present paper deals with the attempts made for design of industrial Dense Medium Cyclones for enhanced coal recovery. Two industrial units of 500 mm diameter and 650 mm diameter were designed with their washing capacities being 200 m3/hr and 350 m3/hr, respectively. The results of the pilot tests conducted on 500 mm cyclone treating very high Near Gravity Material coals crushed to -3.0+0.5 mm gave an ash reduction of up to 19.5 percent with the new design i.e., from a feed ash of 34.5 percent to 15.06 percent in clean coal with an appreciable yield of 45 percent in one stage.
