The Deep Ore Zone (DOZ) is a block cave mining operation exploiting a diluted reserve of 131 million tonnes grading 1.06 per cent copper and 0.81 g/t gold in the lower portion of the Ertsberg East Skarn System (EESS). The EESS is a calcium-magnesium silicate skarn containing in excess of 250 million tonnes of copper-gold ore, located in the Ertsberg Mining District on the crest of the Jawawijaya mountain range in the highlands of Irian Jaya, Indonesia. The EESS was discovered in 1968 where it cropped out at an elevation of 4050 metres above sea level. The Ertsberg Mining District is underlain by siliclastic carbonate and siltstone formations of Jurassic to Tertiary age. The sediments have been folded and are cut by major bedding subparallel and crosscutting structures. Intrusion of a series of igneous bodies post-dates folding and faulting. These I-type intrusions are the source for the copper-gold mineralisation found in the Ertsberg Mining District. The EESS is hosted by carbonates of the Tertiary Waripi and Faumai Formations that have been altered to calcium-magnesium silicate skarn and is situated on the southern limb of a northwest-trending syncline. The EESS is an essentially vertical tabular body with a vertical extent of at least 1200 metres and a lateral extent of up to 1000 metres. The width of the EESS averages 200 metres and locally is in excess of 300 metres. The northeast (hangingwall) contact of the EESS is a skarn reaction front in sudden contact with barren marbles. This contact coincides with a zone of localised faulting and brecciation. The EESS is bounded to the southwest (footwall) by the Ertsberg Diorite, a 3.25 Ma old intrusive. The DOZ block cave operation extends from 3040 metres above sea level to a maximum of 3388 metres above sea level, has a length of 860 metres and a maximum width of 350 metres. The DOZ is a high temperature skarn with a prograde forsterite/diopside mineralogy whose protolith is the dolomitic Tertiary Waripi Formation. The principal retrograde alteration minerals include tremolite, actinolite, serpentine, talc and chlorite. Grade is highest where bornite occurs in large dense complex intergrowths with magnetite and anhydrite. Grade has been locally enhanced in the DOZ by a late-stage pyrite-chalcopyrite hydrothermal alteration event with associated brecciation. Ertsberg Diorite along the footwall of the skarn is also included in the reserve where it is mineralised endoskarn or has been mineralised by porphyrytic or late stage hydrothermal alteration. Formation of the EESS was initiated by contact metamorphism during the intrusion of the Ertsberg Diorite with later metasomatic alteration during both prograde and retrograde phases. The bulk of sulphide mineralisation formed late in the retrograde phase. The EESS is open along strike to the northwest and down-dip with on-going exploration of these areas. Current exploration is targeting both endoskarn and porphyry style alteration and mineralisation of the Ertsberg Diorite.

A typical sub-level block cave mining extraction method employs an undercut level to establish a cavity in hard rock, and as such requires special support methods and products to be installed during the development phase. The undercut level development in the block cave orebody is then sacrificial, and support elements will eventually report to the crusher and perhaps conveyor belt systems for transportation to surface. The choice of support products installed in the undercut level development should take cognizance of the detrimental effect these could have on the mining system such as cutting of conveyor belts, obstructing crushers, safety aspects, and productivity. This work explores the probability and practicality of making use of new-generation support products to make the operation safer as well as enhance productivity in the development phase and during the undercut operation. This paper will investigate the use of glass reinforced plastic(GRP) rockbolts and GRP mesh instead of conventional steel bolts and mesh along with resin capsule-filled holes with the GRP bolts. Complementing this with thin spray liner (TSL) application as another means of creating a safer operating environment, as well as a productive support medium, will also be addressed. These proposed items are envisaged to reduce production downtime and improve the safety of our people. These items are all easy and light to handle, cuttable and crusher friendly, as they will break up during the crushing process.

Neste trabalho, estudaram-se, em escala laboratorial, os efeitos das temperaturas de encharque intercríticas (750, 800 e 850°C) e distintas taxas obtidas por dois diferentes meios de resfriamento (ar e ar forçado) na obtenção de microestrutura bifásica a partir de dois aços laminados a frio “full-hard” (produzidos industrialmente), com micro-adições de Nb e Mo e diferentes teores de C e Mn. Utilizando ensaios mecânicos de tração, microscopia óptica (MO) e eletrônica de varredura (MEV), observaram-se as influências da temperatura de encharque e da taxa de resfriamento sobre as microestruturas resultantes e as influências da presença de ferrita encruada, dos carbonetos não dissolvidos e da morfologia da segunda fase sobre as propriedades mecânicas das amostras estudadas.

In pursuance of the investigation into the influence of various elements on the properties of lead during the past year, the effect of several elements on the creep rate of commercially pure lead has been investigated; a standard initial stress of 500 lb. per sq. in. having been adopted for comparison purposes. Other work which has been carried out indicates that the relative results of creep tests may be altered by varying the applied stress, but this aspect of the problem will need to await further investigations for itscomplete elucidation. The results obtained with dilute tellurium alloys are considered sufficiently interesting, and in some respects are so extraordinary, as to warrant publicatiorr at this stage.n must be realised however that, since the results obtained appear to be at variance with those said to have been obtained in practice and those previously published, the present investigation can only be considered as a contribution to our knowledge of the general problem.Consequently it is not considered advisable or necessary to offer detailed explanation of the results given. Various reagents are added to flotation pulps to manipulate the chemical environment in order to create favourable conditions for the separation of the desired mineral from the unwanted gangue. Interactions occur between these reagents and between the other chemical parameters existing in the flotation pulp which complicate the elucidation of the behaviour of the respective reagents. This paper discusses the roles of the main classes of reagents added viz. collectors, frothers, depressants and activators, as well as the interactions between frothers and collectors. A case study reporting synergistic interactions between thiol collectors in the flotation of pyrite at pH = 4 is included. The use of Potassium n-butyl xanthate (PNBX) and a dithiocarbamate type collector (DTC) were tested both as pure collectors and as components in a collector mixture. In the batch flotation tests sulphur recovery and grade, water recovery, rate of recovery and image analysis of the surface froth were used to evaluate the effect of the mixture on the overall flotation performance. Bubble loading tests showed that the use of the mixture improved the efficiency of the particle collection process by bubbles. Thermochemical measurements of the adsorption of the collectors onto the mineral, indicated the formation of different surface products by the two collectors.

The Belize economy recorded modest growth during 1980; the growth of the gross domestic product (GDP) in real terms was between 1% and 2%. At current prices, the 1980 GDP reached $108 million2. This output was largely attributed to the performance of a few industries, mostly nonminerals. Such performance improved significantly the balance of payments situation by reducing the deficit from $19 million in 1979 to $4 million in 1980. The rate of inflation was an estimated 18% in 1980 and would have been greater if not for a conservative monetary policy and price control on a number of essential items. Expert earnings increased $43 million, or 50%, from the 1979 level. After increasing more than 25% in 1979, imports increased only 6% in 1980 to a level of $141 million owing to the decline in investment and stabilization of petroleum prices. The balance of trade deficit was $9.8 million in 1980, a marked improvement from the 1979 level of $45.1 million. The mineral output for Belize accounted for only a fraction of 1% of the GDP. Such activity was limited to the production of limestone, marl, and sand and gravel, all of which were primarily used in construction of the Northern Highway between Orangewalk and Belize City. Mineral resources are deficient or nonexistent in Belize for the majority of metals and nonmetals, although the Government and others continue to believe that petroleum must exist in Belize. The proximity to Mexican oilfields and the growing finds in the Peters area of Guatemala support this expectation. The combined production value of natural abrasives, which consist of tripoli, special silica stone, garnet, and emery, decreased in 1986. Shipments of processed tripoli increased slightly in quantity and 20% in value. Production of garnet, a common iron- aluminum-silicate mineral, decreased 12% in quantity and value. There was a 4% increase in the quantity and an 11% increase in the value of refined garnet shipped when compared with 1985 shipments, a new record high. Production of crude special silica stone decreased 7% in quantity and slightly in value, and shipments of finished special silica stone products decreased slightly in quantity and increased 229% in value. Production of emery, an impure aluminum oxide, increased 77% in quantity and increased 269% in value of product mined and shipped. [ ]

A new technique for reaming the holes has been tested. This technique is available for reaming a hole at its deep end creating an enlarged cavity that has helicoidal grooves oriented at less than 40 degrees to the hole axis. This technique increases bolt resistance by a factor 1.3-1.62; its bearing capacity by 3 times and enhances underground roadway stability. This technique is suitable for great depth (1000m and greater) and weak wet rocks.

After the successful breakthrough at the end of 2006 of both TBMs into the multifunctional site Faido (MFS), in the middle of 2007 the two tunnel boring machines resumed the 12 km long section between Faido and Sedrun. In the roughly a 10 month interval both approximately 465 m long tunnel boring machines were partly dismantled, pushed through the 2.5 km long MFS, rebuilt for the new larger diameter of 9.5 m and reassembled to be ready for operation. In the rebuilding phase, improvements were made to the equipment, especially as a result of experience gained from the previous 14 km long drive in the section Bodio and taking into account the latest information regarding the upcoming 14 km section Faido. Both TBM drives are currently in the rock formations of the Lucomagno gneiss, which stretch over a section of 3.5 km from the MFS Faido to the predicted Piora Syncline. This section is divided into two fold axes of the Chièra Synform, where the Lucomagno gneiss pass from a sub-horizontal into vertical bedding. The drives, with current rock overburdens exceeding 1,500 m and, as known from the excavation phase of the MFS, in part highly disturbed rock formations, are characterized by the locally intense rock squeezing conditions with large convergences in the vicinity of the driving TBM as well as backwards due to the interaction of the two drives. High expenditure for the support measures, reduced driving performances together with extensive extra work associated with deadlines and increased costs are the result. In the paper the previous experience with the TBM drives in the section Faido and the challenges still awaiting us are presented and discussed.

Titanium and Zirconium Industries Pty. Ltd. separates rutile and zircon from heavy mineral concentrate recovered from sand dunes on the east coast of North Stradbroke Island, Queensland. Separation plant feed is delivered to Dunwich, on the west coast, by a seven mile aerial ropeway traversing the island. Mining and concentration is effected by two floating dredge-concentrators now operating on the beach 31; miles from the aerial ropeway terminal. Heavy mineral concentrate is transported hydraulically from the dredges to the ropeway through a 6 in. pipeline. Six pumps in series deliver 24 ton/hr of dry solids in a pulp containing 13 per cent solids. For maximum economy the transfer pumping system is controlled deliberately to cause transportation in the zone of incipient settlement of solids, ieat velocities below the limit deposit velocity for the particular pipe diameter, pulp density, and specific gravity of solids. Automatic density control, based on a combination of power consumption and pipeline pressure, eliminates the danger of plugging the line but periodic flushing is necessary to remove gradual accumulation of solids in the bottom of the pipe. After 15 months operation the pipeline was descaled with hydrochloric acid to remove severe blistering with rust nodules, regrowth of which is now prevented by continuous injection of inhibitors. After transporting 100,000 tons of heavy mineral the average wear on the steel portion of the pipeline was 0·01 in. and indications are that wear on the asbestos cement portion is less.DESCRIPTION OF OPERATIONSGeographyTitanium & Zirconium Industries Pty. The East Bay Municipal Utility District’s Claremont Tunnel is an 18,000-foot long water tunnel that crosses the Hayward Fault zone near Oakland, California. It was originally completed in 1929. This project involved the construction of a bypass tunnel through the fault zone, including an enlarged vault section designed to accommodate up to 8.5 feet of horizontal offset. Ground conditions encountered included sheared and crushed serpentinite and clayey fault gouge, and presented specific challenges for construction. A special excavation and support sequence used concrete-backfilled side drifts as foundations for the vault steel sets. It also allowed for a 20-foot-wide top heading and bench excavation in soft and squeezing ground conditions.

"A common problem in the mining industry involves the overloading of established conveyor systems. This overloading can have a number of causes, such as new production technology or a changing market condition which increases demand. An overloaded system usually spells disaster and leads to clean-up problems, equipment failures and lost production. The Cape Breton Development Corporation's Lingan Mine had a serious overloading situation on its underground coal clearance system, and equipment was being damaged and production was being lost. It was rectified, in part, by increasing the coal clearance capacity through the use of booster conveyors. This paper discusses the problems which led to this situation, the booster concept and the installation of the first unit at the Lingan Mine.IntroductionThe Lingan Mine is a submarine coal mining operation with an annual production of 1.5 million tonnes from three advancing longwalls. Coal is conveyed 3400m up a 13% slope to the surface. Designed and installed in the early 1970s, the system's 820-tonne/hour design initially proved adequate; however, by the late 1970sthe system was handling surge loads of 1640 tonnes per hour due to the introduction of new face equipment.The coal clearance system consisted of three 485-Kw, two 210-Kw and one 105-Kw conveyors. Each conveyor was designed for 820 tonnes per hour using 1050-mm, Type 10 belt with a 35-degree troughing profile.There were many effects of the overloading on the system:• Loading beyond the physical capacity of the belt resulted in spillage along the conveyor, which increased operational and maintenance costs.• Overloading of the drive components resulted in premature equipment failures.• Spillage at the drive pulley often resulted in damage to the belt and pulley lagging and, under extreme conditions, the conveyor would require partial unloading before it would operate. This was a particular problem under wet conditions because the 485-Kw conveyor drives were fitted with single-drive drums."

"The roasting and gas handling circuits of the Barrick Gold’s new Roasting Facility at the Goldstrike Mine in Nevada, USA incorporate well proven technologies in a unique combination. During the design of the plant, every effort was made to utilize the best available technologies from the perspective of capital, environment and operating costs.Product from the up-stream dry grinding circuit requires roasting to maximize gold recovery. The roaster utilizes Freeport-McMoRan whole ore roasting technology with pure oxygen as the oxidizing gas. This process was chosen based on its proven application on Carlin-type “double refractory” ores. Double refractory is indicative of the gold being difficult to direct leach due to a combination of pyrite encapsulation and the carbonaceous preg-robbing of the ore.A very extensive gas cleaning train follows the roaster and comprises direct cooling, dust scrubbing, indirect cooling, wet electrostatic precipitation, mercury scrubbing, SO2 scrubbing, CO incineration and NO, reduction before venting to the atmosphere.The roasted calcine is quenched, neutralized and then thickened before leaching in the carbon-in-leach-circuit.INTRODUCTIONBarrick’s strategic development plan integrated the production of gold from Goldstrike’s carbonaceous ore reserves by 2000. A due diligence review of carbonaceous ore processing options was initiated during the second half of 1 996. Processes considered included autoclaving followed by a proprietary ammonium thiosulfate leaching process, fine grinding/autoclaving as practiced then by Santa Fe, and whole ore roasting as practiced by then Independence Mining and Newmont. The objective by year-end was to recommend the most robust and economical process for Goldstrike’s carbonaceous resources. In the fall of 1996, a detailed review of roasting as a processing alternative for Goldstrike was initiated."

The choice of a design concept for a bridge foundation is guided by various factors; several of these factors are indeed of technical origin, like the environmental conditions in a broad sense, but others non technical factors may also have a profound impact on the final design concept. The foundations solutions adopted for the Rion Antirion bridge are described and an attempt is made to pinpoint the major factors that have guided the final choices. The Rion Antirion bridge is exemplar in that respect: the foundation concept combines the simplicity of capacity design, the conceptual facility of construction and enhances the foundation safety. The design of these foundations was a very challenging task which required full cooperation and close interaction with all the parties involved: concessionaire, contractor, designers and design checker.

COBALT is a silvery gray metal which closely resembles nickel in appearance and properties although it is somewhat harder and more brittle. It is rather widely disseminated and is estimated to make up about 0.001 percent of the earth's crust as compared to 0.020 percent for nickel. Cobalt, one of the four ferromagnetic elements, is used for many magnetic applications. It is oxidation resistant, a property which when coupled with its moderately high melting point of 1,495° C., makes it useful in high-temperature applications. Although cobalt had been used by man as a coloring agent for glass and other ceramic products for 4,000 years, it was not isolated as a metal until 1742 and not established as an element until some 40 years later. Early in the 20th century, cobalt began to be used in alloys, and soon these applications displaced ceramics as the major consumer of cobalt. The use of cobalt in alloys gave considerable stimulus to production, and the world output of cobalt increased rapidly, rising from 400 tons in 1920 to 1,400 tons in 1930 and 5,500 tons in 1940. With the advent of the jet plane in the mid 1940's and the consequent increased need for cobalt-bearing high-temperature alloys, cobalt production again increased, reaching 7,900 tons in 1950. The increased demand for cobalt during the Korean war coupled with a large demand for stockpiling caused world production to more than double within the next 10 years, reaching a peak of 17,300 tons in 1959.

"This article investigates the complex problem of a budgeting process for a large mining operation. Strict adherence to budget infers that financial results align with goals. In reality, the budget is not a predetermined entity but emerges as the sum of the enterprise’s operational plans. These are highly interdependent, being influenced by unforeseeable events and operational decision-making.Limitations of stochastic simulations, normally applied in the project environment but not in budgeting, are examined and a model enabling their application is proposed. A better understanding of budget failure in large mines emerges, showing that the budget should be viewed as a probability distribution rather than a single deterministic value.The strength of the model application lies with the combining of stochastic simulation, probability theory, financial budgeting, and practical scheduling to predict budget achievement, reflected as a probability distribution. The principal finding is the interpretation of the risk associated with, and constraints pertaining to, the budget.The model utilizes a four-dimensional (space and time) schedule, linking key drivers through activity-based costing to the budget. It offers a highly expressive account of deduction regarding fund application for budget achievement, emphasizing that ’it is better to be approximately right than precisely wrong’."
