Deep coal mines with strong roof and floor rock frequently encounter face and rib bursts. The burst problem is becoming more severe as mining depth increases, prompting efforts to relieve high stress areas ahead of mining. Successful stress relief reduces the occurrence of uncontrolled coal bursts. This report by the Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, presents a review of the most widely used methods to detect and destress high stress zones along coal faces. Stress-related burst problems and destressing efforts at a cooperating mine were investigated. Laboratory tests of the drilling yield method for high stress detection were conducted to determine the correlation between the volume of cuttings obtained and the magnitude of the applied stress at various confining pressures. A three- dimensional, multiple-seam computer modeling program, "MULSIM?, was used to evaluate the effectiveness of stress relief methods. Modeling results and guidelines for destressing are presented. Results indicate that dangerously high stress areas can be controlled by either proper planning or destressing. Proper mine planning guidelines and destressing methods such as volley firing, hydraulic fracturing, and auger drilling are discussed.

The compensation-insurance rates for quarrying in North Carolina are 11 times higher than for the State?s major industry, textiles. Some operators are willing to accept this as representing the ratio of existing hazards. This was not true of the management of the Southern Aggregates Corporation, and in 1935 it tools definite steps to correct the idea of its local officials and employees that loss of life and limb in quarries is inevitable. "Arsenic enters the Mount Isa copper circuit in the form of arsenic rich minerals in concentrates from both the Mount Isa and Ernest Henry copper mines. Arsenic is a volatile metal, and will partition in the copper smelter between smelter off gases, slag and anode. Most of the volatile arsenic will report to Isasmelt Electrostatic Precipitator (ESP) or Waste Heat Boiler dusts where it will form a re-circulating load within the smelter. ESP dust is produced at a rate of 15,000 - 20,000 t/y and is currently removed from the precipitator and leached in the new ESP Dust Recovery Plant to separate copper and arsenic from the ESP dust. This paper describes the laboratory test works of ESP dust leaching, neutralisation and cementation processes. The planttrial, commissioning and operation have been presented as well.1. IntroductionThe flue dusts generated in the process of copper smelting contain appreciable amounts of copper and other valuable metals including precious metals. These flue dusts also contain appreciable amounts of arsenic trioxide where arsenic occurs in the ore body. The copper smelters processing concentrates generate residuals, such as ESP dust, containing arsenic trioxide. ESP dust contains impurities such as arsenic and bismuth which are harmful to the copper refining process if they report to anode. These impurities are fumed off in the smelting process and report to the dust as arsenic and bismuth oxides.The content of arsenic in the feed of Mount Isa copper smelter is about 0.1 % to 0.4%. Arsenic is a volatile metal, and will partition in the copper smelter between off gases and anode. Most of the volatile arsenic reports to Electrostatic Precipitator (ESP) and Waste Heat Boiler dusts where it will form a re-circulating load within Mount Isa Copper Smelter. Unless arsenic is bled from the smelter circuit, it will build up to a point where both anode quality and smelter hygiene are adversely impacted."

1. The investigation shows that there are two coal beds of major importance in Perry County from the standpoint of present production -Flag and Fire Clay -and two beds of minor importance -Haddix and Hindman. The Flag and Fire Clay beds contain the largest remaining known reserves. 2. Known measured and indicated reserves in all beds, based on a minimum thickness of 14 inches and 1,800 tons per acre-foot of coal in place, are estimated at 840 million short tons as of January 1, 1954. Of this total, 720 million short tons is in beds 28 inches and more thick. Areas in each bed were omitted from the estimate because available data relative to the bed characteristics are too meager for making an estimate that conforms with the definitions of measured and indicated coal adopted for this study. Should future drilling or development prove reserves in these areas, these should be added to the total estimated reserves.

In several European countries, including Russia, it has become economically attractive to utilize peat as a fuel for power generation, the production of metallurgical coke, the production of fuel briquettes for the domestic market and low-Btu gas. Although the economic base and availability of energy supplies in Europe is much different than it is in Canada, regional economics here may warrant the development of peat as an alternative source of energy. Canadian peatlands cover several thousands of square miles and have historically been considered as waste land. Now, with the increasing costs of other energy sources, it is apparent that fuel peat should be re-evaluated as a potential energy resource. A nation-wide inventory of peat deposits has been prepared and reserves evaluated for some of these areas where field surveys have been carried out. The paper describes alternative mining methods developed to meet some of the various conditions encountered on virgin peatland . These mining techniques are generally based on current peat technology exercised in other parts of the world and would be applicable in some of the peat regions of Canada. Cost estimates have been prepared for peat production in regions of Canada, and the socio-economic aspects of a large-scale fuel peat operation are discussed. Several potential utilization schemes have been described, with particular emphasis on electric power generation. The paper makes recommendations for steps to be taken in the development of a fuel peat industry in Canada.

Experiments dealing with the dissolution of silver by cyanide from various silver minerals-were reported, several years ago.4/ This work showed that the silver in some silver minerals is completely and readily soluble in cyanide solution, whereas other silver minerals must be given special treatment before or during cyanidation to obtain much dissolution of the silver by cyanide. Flotation as a method for treating silver ores has not been studied much, except in the case of base-metal ores carrying silver, Particularly lead-silver ores. However, many mills now are concentrating gold ores by flotation, and when such ores also contain silver the recovery of the silver by flotation is of considerable importance. Moreover, many mines contain ore in which silver is the principal valuable constituent. Some of these ores are amenable to cyanidation, but the cost of a cyanide plant may be prohibitive because of limited ore bodies or other factors. In such instances the successful application of flotation would mean that the property could be operated.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the use of lignite char for producing carbon disulfide; CS2 production rates were as high as when wood charcoal was used as raw material. The maximum space velocity for CS2 produced in the bench-scale study was 9,280 hour-1, reacting sulfur and lignite char at 792° C. The reaction temperature and the temperature at which the char was carbonized were the two most important factors in determining CS2 production rates. Increasing the carbonization temperature in nitrogen from 400° to 900° C advanced the temperature at which carbon disulfide was first produced from 550° to 850° C. The average activation energy for reacting chars with sulfur was 44,000 cal/g mole. The reaction was first order with respect to the partial pressure of sulfur. Increasing the rate of sulfur admission caused a decrease in rate of production at otherwise similar conditions. Rates were not affected by either char size or sodium carbonate catalysis. High space velocities at moderate temperatures using inexpensive lignite chars could offer an economic advantage in the manufacture of carbon disulfide provided that yields were attractive.

INCREASING attention has been given in the last decade to the possibilities of mine leasing in the West. The practice as described in this article does not refer to the leasing of entire properties for corporate operation. It is intended to deal rather with the advantages and problems incident to leasing portions of properties to individuals who themselves, individually or in groups, do the actual mining and transportation of the ore. These individuals are sometimes called "leasers" and sometimes called "tributors." The contracts under which they work set up an independent relationship of lessor and leaser, between themselves and the mineowner or operator. This relationship has many advantages to both sides over those created by the ordinary relationship of employer and employe. From the standpoint of the owners there is no liability on independent contractors for industrial injuries, social security taxes, unemployment taxes, or the manifold restrictions of the Federal Labor Relations and Wage Hour Acts and similar state acts where they exist. As the leaser's income depends on the quantity and quality of ore produced, there is a distinct incentive for maximum production of a good grade of ore. This in turn promotes careful mining of the areas under lease. Ordinarily in mining, labor cost is a high percentage of the total cost of operation. Under a leasing system, even if the leasers be allowed to retain half of the gross values that they produce, and the owner or operator gets half, in the case of marginal ore bodies this is ordinarily more than the lessor would realize if the property were worked by day labor. These noise control modifications were installed and successfully tested at three operating quarries. This report identifies the major noise sources that can be encountered in crushing and screening plants, and discusses the applicable noise control materials and techniques that a plant operator can utilize on a retrofit basis to reduce equipment noise.

The term "resultant load vector" is defined as the representation of the forces applied to a longwall roof support element by strata activity through a single, quantifiable measure of support resistance. The relatively complex kinematics of the shield structure prohibits determination of support resistance simply from the summation of leg forces. In the research reported in this Bureau of Mines study, the mechanics of the shield structure were evaluated, and a technique was developed whereby the resultant shield loading could be determined by instrumenting supports with pressure transducers and strain gauges to measure leg, canopy capsule, and lemniscate link forces. This technique has been laboratory tested in the Bureau's Mine Roof Simulator. Functional relationships among variables were assessed, and confidence intervals were established for prediction of the resultant load vector parameters. Resultant load measurements were taken on five instrumented shields on an active longwall face in Colorado. Results were analyzed and found to be consistent with shield mechanics and anticipated roof behavior. Benefits to be derived from this research, future efforts, and long-range goals are discussed.

Pile response under combined uplift and lateral load is very important and it is imperative to evaluate the effect of combined loading and only few studies were reported on pile behavior under combined uplift and lateral loads. Model pile made-up of aluminum having an outer and inner diameter of 25.4 mm and 19.4 mm respectively is used. Dimensions of the model steel tank are fixed as 1.0 m x1.0 m x 1.2 m (depth) to avoid the boundary effects under combined lateral and uplift loads. Experiments were carried out on single piles at isolated uplift, isolated lateral loading and combined lateral and uplift loading, embedded in sandy soil. Results indicate that load?deflection behavior is nonlinear for isolated uplift and lateral load tests as well as in case of combined loadings. It is also observed that the behavior of piles under isolated loadings is substantially different when compared to combined loading.

Gnome shaft, situated about 24 miles southeast of Carlsbad, N. Mex., was designed and sunk by the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission for conducting a peace- time experimental nuclear explosion in the thick salt beds of the Permian Salado formation. Excavation was started July 1, 1960, and completed July 26, 1961. The 10-foot diameter shaft, lined with concrete through the rock section, was sunk 1,216 feet. A drift was driven approximately 1,140 feet on the 1,200- foot level terminating in a shot chamber. On completion of 100 feet of shaft, by means of a truck-mounted crane, facilities were installed for conventional sinking. About 709 feet of rock and 506 feet of salt were encountered in the shaft. Salt beds at this place are reported to be over 1,200 feet thick. The overlying rock section varies greatly in composition and thickness of beds and contains a 28-foot bed of water-bearing dolomite. The aquifer was sealed to facilitate shaft sinking and to prevent water-seepage damage in the salt section of the shaft. Sealing was accomplished by grout injection through holes drilled into the aquifer and by grouting behind the concrete liner.

KIRKLAND LAKE and Porcupine in 1931 accounted for more than $41,625,000 of Ontario's total gold production of $43,117,688. For the first time, the younger camp surpassed the older in gold output, producing $21,734,000 against $19,891,000 for Porcupine. Present output of both camps is increasing, and should pass the record figures of 1931 before the year is out. In May of this year, Porcupine mines milled 285,759 tons, with a bullion value of $1,810,009; the corresponding figures for Kirkland mines are 149,188 tons and $2,104,757. A much higher average value per ton for Kirkland ore, $14.10 against $6.33 average for Porcupine accounts for the difference. The two fields are about 100 miles apart by rail, and there are important differences in the character of the ores, which accounts largely for the difference in milling costs and in final tailing values, despite excellent metallurgical work in both the fields.

Raise boring is the preferred option for constructing ventilation shafts in Australia. The trend has been towards larger diameters and longer single-pass shafts, and if at all possible, reaming through to the surface. The risk of raise failures, due to missed, unforseen or latent ground conditions has therefore been increasing, along with the need for better, more confident stability assessments.While the stability of specific weak zones and structures must be assessed individually, empirical rock mass classification schemes have been successfully used for about the last 20 years to assess general raise stability; eg the McCracken and Stacey method (M&S).Unfortunately M&S, as originally documented in McCracken and Stacey (1989), did not include a database of raise diameter and rock mass conditions versus actual performance. Nor was there a procedure for assessing the risk of failure due to adverse ground conditions. Peck and Lee (2008) published an Australian database of raise bore performance. Raise diameter and ground conditions, in terms of a lower bound Qr value, were presented for 50 cases versus raise performance. This paper updates the 2008 raise performance plot with more and SRF-corrected data. McCracken and Stacey (1989) had previously recommended that additional geotechnical data should be acquired and analysed when the proposed raise plotted on the unstable side of raisebore stability ratio (RSR) = 1.3, but the Australian data used in this study also suggests that all sites with Qr Contributions and sensitivities of various rock mass parameters (RQD, Jn, Ja, Jr, Jw, SRF, time-dependent weathering/deterioration) to raise stability and risk of failure are discussed. Numerous case studies are used to illustrate issues with stability assessments.As raises can now be remotely supported using sprayed fibrecrete, questions of time-dependency are also discussed. In recent times, contiguous piles, ‘mini-piles’ and grouting have also been successfully used to presupport or otherwise improve the stability of near-surface sections of weathered, or poor quality rock masses.

High-viscosity water injection has been proposed for use in reservoirs containing high-viscosity crude oils. Previous publications have largely ignored the possible effects of the connate water on the proposed process. This paper describes experimental work which indicates that the connate water will be forced ahead of the injected water to form a bank of low-viscosity water. This decreases the oil recovery which would be expected if such a bank were not formed. These effects are shown for a range of fluid mobilities and connate-water saturations for a five-spot injection system. In general, oil recoveries using viscous water are significantly greater than for untreated water even though they are less than would be expected if no connate water bank were formed. INTRODUCTION The effect of mobility ratio on the oil recovery of wa-terfloods has been known for many years. Muskat first pointed out that the fluid mobilities (k/µ) in the oil and water regions would affect the performance of the water-flood, and he estimated the general effect of these variables.' Since this early work, studies of the effect of mobility ratio on secondary recovery have been reported where mathematical,' potentiometric3 and scaled flow models' were used. These studies have shown that a reduction in the mobility ratio between the oil and the displacing fluid would cause additional oil recovery when water-flooding reservoirs containing viscous crude oils. Studies reported by Pye- nd Sandiford 8 have indicated that chemicals to increase injection water viscosity are now available and can be used to reduce the over-all mobility ratio of a waterflood. Where mobility ratios are controlled by the injection of viscous fluids, the connate water of the reservoir can play an important part in the displacement of the reservoir oil. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of the connate-water saturation in waterfloods where viscous waters are used for injection. DISPLACEMENT OF THE CONNATE WATER Russell, Morgan and Muskat7 were the first to recognize the mobility of connate waters in waterflooding. They conducted waterfloods on oil-saturated cores containing 20 and 35 per cent irreducible water saturations, and found that from 80 to 90 per cent of the "irreducible" water was produced after only one pore volume of water was injected. However, their experiments were conducted at rates of flow significantly higher than those ordinarily occurring in waterfloods. Also, the cores were only from 4.0 to 8.5 cm long. Brown 4 studied a 100-cm linear sand pack which had been prepared to contain connate water and oil. He used 140- and 1.8-cp oils with injection water of essentially the same viscosity as the connate water. He found that all of the connate water was displaced by the injection water in both cases. However, the injection volumes required for complete displacement of the connate water were considerably higher in the case of the more viscous oil. To verify the results of the foregoing experiment, a 10-ft-long linear model was constructed by packing 250-300 mesh sand in a 1/2-in. diameter nylon tube. The model was evacuated, saturated with a brine of 1-cp viscosity, and flooded with a 41-cp mineral oil to the irreducible water saturation of 10.9 per cent. The model was then waterflooded by the injection of a water solution which had an apparent viscosity of 42.6 cp. The solution consisted of 0.5 per cent methylcellulose in distilled water. The viscosities of the oil and connate water were measured with an Ostwald viscosimeter. The viscosity of the polymer solution was calculated by Darcy's law using pressures measured during actual flow conditions. The ratio of the mobility in the oil region to the mobility in the inject ion-water region was approximately 0.32. The mobility ratio of the oil region to the connate-water bank was approximately 14. The mobility ratio between the connate-water bank and the injection water region was 0.024. Approximately 84.5 per cent of the recoverable oil was produced before water breakthrough. Immediately following breakthrough, oil and connate water were produced at an increasing water-oil ratio until the viscous injection water broke through. The Morobe Province of central Papua New Guinea (PNG) has been mined for gold for nearly a century, although it is only in the past decade that large-scale modern mining commenced. The Hidden Valley gold-silver project began construction in mid-2006 and production by August 2009, and is located in the mountains above Wau in the headwaters of the Watut River. The mine is owned and operated by the Morobe Mining Joint Venture (MMJV), which also owns the Wafi-Golpu project, comprising the Wafi gold deposit and Golpu copper-gold deposit, situated in the Watut River Valley. Together they represent a potential mine of the scale of Ok Tedi or Bougainville or bigger. The MMJV is owned in equal shares by Newcrest Mining from Australia and Harmony Gold from South Africa. Although Hidden Valley was the first large-scale mine in PNG to engineer and build a tailings storage facility, poor environmental management during construction and early operations led to significant erosion of waste rock and sedimentation impacts throughout the ~200 km length of the Watut River. Since then, substantial efforts have been made to improve environmental management, especially waste rock placement and storage and water quality management. While the impacts from the Hidden Valley project appear to be reducing, the saga has heightened concerns by many along the Watut River and across PNG about ongoing impacts from mining.This paper presents the results of an ongoing project in the Morobe Province conducted by the Mineral Policy Institute examining the historical, current and future impacts of mining, including community views, social and environmental impacts and the monitoring and regulation of mining. Overall, there is a clear need to more fully integrate social and environmental issues into life-of-mine planning and go above and beyond regulatory requirements. AN interesting study of the application of air-, conditioning to the problem of mine ventilation and cooling can be found on the Witwatersrand in South Africa. Here there are a large number of deep mines in a relatively small area. Due to the nature of the reef, many mines are working at a depth of 6000 ft. and some have gone down to 8000 and 9000 ft. below the surface. At such depths, even in a country geologically as old as Africa, the virgin rock temperature approaches 110°F. The flow of heat from the- rock to the ventilation air is tremendous though the shaft or drift may have been open to ventilation for some years. In addition, there is the heat produced by machinery, lights, and men at work and the heat of adiabatic compression of air introduced into the mine. The difference in atmosphere pressure between the collar of a shaft and a level 6000 ft. below is nearly 3lb. per sq. in., resulting in an increase in heat content of nearly four B.T.U. per pound of air delivered to the mine at surface. Further the exclusive use of wet mining to reduce the incidence of miner?s phthisis increases the latent- heat content of the air.

To date VMD have designed, built and supplied nine autoclaves to various mining companies in Canada, the US, and Papua New Guinea. Initially, completely fabricated and lead lined units were shipped. The logistics of Placer Dome's Porgera PNG Project necessitated fabricating and lead lining each autoclave in five sections for transportation to site, each piece weighing approximately 30.5 tonnes. Support equipment such as turning rolls, automatic and manual welding machines had to be set up on site to facilitate assembly of these units which was a challenge in planning. This on site erection programme was completed in three months.
