The group five metals, vanadium, niobium, and tantalum all show cold-rolled textures of {100)(011) and {112)(0ll) with a preference for the (100) in vanadium and niobium and for the {112) in tantalum. Recrys-tallization texture of (100) and (111) was reported1 for vanadium after annealing (no temperature stated). For tantal~m ,~ annealing below 1200°C strengthened the (112) texture but the (111) texture increased and was predominant as the annealing temperature was raised to 2500°C. Annealing niobium up to 1100°C strengthened the ( 100) texture and developed a weak (111) texture.' In the present work niobium has been annealed up to 2000°C. Nearly 70 pct of the grains showed {111) texture with only a weak (112) component and an insignificant (100) component remaining. In addition, double-crystal rocking curves were used to follow the increase in crystal perfection of the grains with increased annealing time. Material and Treatment. Samples i by 4 in. were sawed from & -in.-thick cold-rolled niobium sheet obtained from Wah Chang. Chemical analysis of the material showed it to be 99.4 pct pure with tantalum as the major impurity. Individual pieces were annealed for 2, 15, 30, and 60 rnin in a vacuum of 10'* Torr using an rf generator. They were etched until the grain boundaries were well-defined, Fig. 1. Average grain size varied from 1 mm for 2 min annealing to 2 mm for 60 rnin annealing. Experimental Results. Preferred Orientation. The orientations of 97 of the 117 grains in the specimens of Fig. 1 were determined by back-reflect ion Laue patterns. A General Electric 10-cm-diam cylindrical camera was used rather than the conventional flat camera in order to record more of the low-index spots. The method proposed by Forest, Barton, and schieltz4 was used to transform the cylindrical film patterns to standard stereographic projections. Table I gives the compilation of data. Even 2 rnin anneal at 2000°C is sufficient to yield a strong (111) preferred orientation, and the percentage of grains with this orientation increases steadily with annealing time at the expense of all other orientations. Crystal Perfection. X-ray topographs were taken of each specimen in both the (111) and (112) orientation using the method described by Birks and Grant.' As the anneal time increases, the grains become larger and the individual reflections become slightly more uniform in intensity, indicating an increase in crystal perfection. For a more quantitative measure of crystal perfection, it was necessary to measure the double-crystal rocking curve. The spectrometer employed was a Gaertner instrument of Compton design. LiF was chosen for the first crystal because the (400) reflection with d spacing of 1.05 AU is a good match to the (222) niobium reflection with d spacing of 0.95 AU. CuKp radiation was used in order to further reduce the d spacing mixmatch correction.' A variable aperture was placed between the LiF and the niobium specimen so that a single grain or even a small portion of a grain could be examined. Fig. 2 shows typical rocking curves for the four annealing times. For the 2-min specimen, a single peak is observed with 10' of arc full-breadth at half maximum. As the annealing time is increased to 15 or 30 min, several sharper peaks of 40 to 80" breadth can be seen within a single grain. After 60 rnin anneal only a single peak of about 30" is observed. Table I1 shows the corrected rocking curve breadths and the dislocation densities, ND. The latter were calculated from the equation7 where W is the corrected rocking curve breadth at half maximum in radians and b is the effective Burger's vector. For (110)(111) slip in niobium, b is 2.86 AU. Discussion. The annealing of cold-rolled niobium at 2000°C causes rapid preferential growth of grains with {ill} orientation. Before the various States began to enact workman's compensation laws accidents were considered inherent in many industries, and little or no effort was made to prevent or reduce them. The hazard was accepted by the employee with the job, and the avoidance of accidents by mental alertness or physical agility was largely his responsibility. After the employee had given evidence of enough skill inn performing his allotted task efficiently the responsibility of the employer apparently ceased with respect to the personal safety of the employee. However, following the enactment of workmen's compensation laws, at least two facts that had not before been fully appreciated soon became apparent: (1) The majority of accidents can be prevented if the management firmly determines to prevent them; (2) frog a monetary point of view alone accidents are decidedly expensive, both to employer and to employee. It is now evident that savings effected by conscientious safety effort add substantially to net profits of operation.

I commend the authors on examining an interesting method of shaft lining and attempting to improve safety in a dangerous environment by remotely installing the shaft lining. It is important, though, to not trade off shaft lining safety for long-term mine safety by lining an intake shaft with combustible material. In many operations, the mine utilities are installed next to the lining of the intake shaft, supplying a possible ignition source if damaged or overloaded. Although the polyurethane studied in the paper is of relatively high density, no mention is made of the flame retardency of the samples. When exposed to heat, small amounts of polyure¬thane will melt and bum but are extinguished when the heat source is removed. If large surface areas of combustible polyurethane - a tunnel or mine shaft - are exposed to ignition heat sources that are not removed or extinguished early, an uncontrollable, fuel rich fire may result with high carbon monoxide levels, low oxygen concentrations, and greatly increased burning rates that can have devastating effects on the ventilation system and miners' safety.

This paper discusses the lubrication of surface and underground mining machinery and equipment from the standpoint of machine components. The machine components considered are bearings, cylinders, gears, chains, couplings, fluid drives, hydraulic systems, screws and wire ropes. The best selection of lubricants for these machine components, and for sub-divisions of the components, are outlined. They form general recommendations, for average operating conditions in both surface and under-ground mining operations. The American Petroleum Institute's service classification of both engine crankcase oils and gear oils is de-scribed and used in recommending products for these applications. The practical aspect of lubrication is kept foremost in the recommendations, which are designed to meet the requirements of a wide variety of equipment with the minimum number of lubricants. THE lubrication of mining machinery and equipment presents a variety of problems peculiar to the industry. The type of mine, the ambient temperature, water, dust, and operating and maintenance practices, as well as the age and condition of the equipment, are variables which have to be considered in making lubricant recommendations.

Golden Star Resources Bogoso operates in Ghana’s Western Region. The gold recovery plant includes; a flotation circuit producing a concentrate for the BIOX® process that oxidizes sulphides before a CIL circuit; and a dedicated CIL circuit. BIOX® uses bacteria, therefore water from the BIOX® and CIL plants remained separated; CN water could not be introduced into the flotation / BIOX® circuit. The operation built a process water inventory with high TDS and installed a process water treatment plant (PWTP). Water was released in compliance the permits but containing some thiocyanate. The PWTP brine was returned to the TSF, further exacerbating the TDS. The operation experienced a drought removing the traditional water sources; the team evaluated the options to maintain production - various water streams were laboratory tested provided options for water use. The paper presents the story (treatment chemistry and process chemistry) of continued operations by treating stored water and PWTP discharge water with peroxide; brine usage within the CIL circuit, which increased gold recovery (laboratory testing) and reduced the TDS. Water flows were further modified to include hydraulic tailings re-mining to a CIL circuits. Details of the recovery, basic chemistry and costs savings are provided.

The Bureau of Mines has developed a quantitative Analysis for pyrite in coal by X-ray diffraction that can be accomplished in little more than 1 hour. To minimize the sample analysis time, data processing has been completely computerized with pertinent output information displayed on a VR12 cathode-ray tube display. Use of this computerized system is not only advantageous during the experimental stages of the pyrite analysis project but would also be essential if the X-ray diffraction procedure is accepted as a standard method of analysis.

Copper concentrate from Bougainville's copper mine located on the west slope of the Crown Prince Range on Bougainville island, is pumped 27 km to the filter and drying plant at Anewa Bay for preparation and storage prior to shipment to overseas customers. The Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, is conducting research and development on a coal-burning gas turbine. This work includes the development of (1) turbine blades resistant to coal ash erosion, (2) equipment to feed coal under pressure to a turbine, (3) an efficient combustion system, and (4) equipment to remove coal ash from the gases that drive the turbine. Initial emphasis is being placed on testing the first turbine ever equipped with blades designed specifically for use with coal as the fuel. Operating tests with this turbine are now in progress. This paper describes the Bureau's coal-burning gas turbine development program and progress on this operating test.

The Bureau of Mines studied copper-nickel minerals (mainly sulfides) of the Duluth Gabbro Complex in north-eastern Minnesota to determine their response to selective high-temperature sulfatization techniques. The gabbro, containing 0.44 percent copper and 0.13 percent nickel, was ground to minus 325 mesh and sulfatized in a heated, rotating, stainless steel bench-scale retort. Tests demonstrated that over 95 percent of the copper and 80 percent of the nickel can be converted to water-soluble sulfates, depending upon the roasting conditions employed. Yield equations were developed using regression analysis for predicting the extraction of copper and nickel between the temperature limits of 520° to 670° C, the roasting time limits of 3 to 7 hours, and S02 limits of 10 to 40 percent in S02-air mixtures.

In spite of recent concerns in certain European countries, I believe that silicate-ester grouts will continue to be employed in practice, unless more cost-effective inorganic grouts are developed for the treatment of fine sands. It is also noteworthy that over the past 40 years, there has been a record of good experience where silicate-ester grouts have been used in ground improvement. Nevertheless, there is now a need via the European Standard EN 12715 (2000) "to assess the environmental impact, particularly the toxicity of the grout and grout components, and their effect on ground and drinking water should be considered before grouting." "When testing the grouting material for environmental impact, the following aspects should be considered: ? Whether during processing, transport or grouting, substance can be generated or released which could be hazardous to the environment or the grouting crew; ? Whether noxious substances can spread upon mixing with ground water; ? Whether reaction products can be produced or released which influence the water quality; ? The type of particles eroded from hardened grout; ? Chemical reactions between hardened grout and the ground water."

Particle mixtures were sampled in the laboratory, using ordinary sampling procedures, to determine whether or not the compound-multinomial probability distribution and other developments of part 2 agreed with experimental results. The objective was accomplished by the Bureau of Mines by comparing the moments and moment relationships of the appropriate probability models with their corresponding experimental values over a fairly wide range. The overall agreement between the corresponding theoretical and experimental values is both good and complete. The results demonstrate that sampling to a constant amount, such as weight, of items per sample is not the same, in general, as sampling to some constant number of items per sample. The results seem to confirm all the developments of part 2 and the application of the compound-multinomial function to bulk sampling.

Lack of sufficient publication funds has resulted in the accumulation of considerable unpublished experimental work on copper metallurgy by the Bureau staff . The present report gives extended abstracts of this work , as well as a discussion of the best direction for future efforts . The experimental work reported in this series of papers was done in cooperation with the University of Arizona , Tucson , Ariz . The investigations covered in the third , fifth , and seventh papers were done under the direction of G. L. Oldright and the remainder under the direction of V. H. Gottschalk .

Recent trends of the mining project show that there will be more and more mechanized, largescale mining operations with complex process options to make low grade deposits economically feasible to develop. The global optimization of large scale, complex mine operations will become more important for the future mining. To serve the industry?s future needs, the OptiMine® software program is developed based on expertise gained at the Colorado School of Mines (CSM) for more than two decades, by using the special solution methodology based on the Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) technique in the Operations Research (OR). The program has been beta-tested on more than 20 projects as a multi-time period scheduling and cutoff grade optimization tool that handles large scale open pit and underground mining operations involving complex process options, many stockpiles and dumps, blending requirements, and truck hour limitations. In each project, various operational options are evaluated in OptiMine® to develop strategic planning to help defining company?s strategies and directions. This paper demonstrates how the OptiMine® can be used to optimize a large scale, complex production scheduling problem on a case study coming from real world project. The case study describes multi-pit mine production scheduling optimization with pit backfills in such a fashion that acid generating waste rocks are encapsulated to minimize environmental impact.

The copper-bearing waters now treated successfully at Britannia for the recovery of their copper content are almost entirely derived from what is known as the Fairview mine; this was the first extensive copper producer of the Britannia ore-bodies, and consisted of a number of almost parallel veins, carrying good copper values, the ore consisting of chalcopyrite and pyrite in a quartz gangue. These veins occur in what is known as the ?Britannia shear zone' (Schofield, S. J., G.S.C. Sum. Rept., 1918, Pt. B), developed for roughly five miles in a roof-pendant in the well-known Coast Range batholith. This .pendant is made up of Palxozoic rocks known as the 'Britannia Formation' (LeRoy, O.E., Portion of Main Coast of B.C. and Adjacent Islands; G.S.C. Memoir No. 996, 1908). These consist of dark carbonaceous slates, quartzites; and tuffs or basic flows, and within them are large quartz porphyry siJls. These Britannia rocks are sheared and altered, the resultant rock being a fissile quartz-sericite or quartz-chlorite schist. The mineralization invariably occurs in this chlorite schist, which in the more productive areas has mottles or blobs of chlorite developed. A narrow, though persistent, band of grey slate forms the footwall of the productive portions of the shear zone.

En la ciudad de Lima se acondiciono un local para preparar la mezcla con los materiales de la mina y replicar el diseño, se alquilo los equipos alpha20 y mixer para preparar y lanzar la mezcla de concreto a los paneles especialmente preparados para recepcionar la mezcla.

"New tax rules that can apply to the repayment, extinguishment, or other settlement of a company's debt are finally taking shape. These new rules are far-reaching in their application, and can affect mining companies in a serious, negative way.IntroductionIn his February 1994 budget, Finance Minister Paul Martin announced changes to the Income Tax Act that could have an adverse impact on a company that restructures its debt. Since then, the new rules have undergone considerable transformation during their fetal stage: draft legislation was introduced in July 1994; revised draft legislation was introduced December 1994; and a third version of draft legislation was introduced February 1995. It seems that the new rules have now been pretty well finalized, and they contain some serious traps that the unwary could fall into. The new rules are of particular importance to mining companies, because a mining company's resource pools will be caught under the new rules, whereas these pools escaped the wrath of the old rules. The following commentary summarizes the new rules that are generally referred to as the ""debt forgiveness"" rules."

"The U.S. Bureau of Mines established on August 15, 1983, the Generic Mineral Technology Center for Respirable Dust within the Mining and Mineral Resources Research Institutes (MRIs) at The Pennsylvania State University and West Virginia University in association with participating MRIs at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the University of Minnesota. The Center's research program has been developed with recognition of the stated objective of the Federal Mine Safety and Health laws which is to ""... permit each miner the opportunity to work underground during the period of his entire adult working life without incurring any disability from pneumoconiosis or any other occupation-related disease . . . ."" The Center's program is designed to permit an accelerated attack on the fundamental research problems for the control of respirable dust in mines.The primary goal of the Center is to reduce the incidence and severity of respirable dust disease through advancing the fundamental understanding of all aspects of respirable dust associated with mining and milling and the interaction of dust and lungs. The Generic Technology Center's research program explores these concerns with the objective of refining existing strategies and developing new respirable dust control techniques that are consistent with the fundamental dust-lung interaction processes that lead to mine worker disability. The work concentrates on: (1) control of dust generation; (2) dilution, dispersion and collection in mine airways; (3) characterization of dust particles; (4) interaction of dust and lungs; and (5) relationship of mine environment, geology, and seam characteristics to dust generation and mobility. The fundamental aspects of this work are applicable to the control of respirable dust problems in both hard rock mines and coal mines and to other dusts such as diesel-generated. The Center activities involve the training of engineers and scientists, graduate students and undergraduate students through their respective institutions, and the technology transfer to the industry. The Center also serves as the reference center for publications' in the respirable dust area.The Center is composed of faculty from the four universities/institutes listed above. The personnel, facilities and equipment that are available to the Center from these entities are diverse, complementary and comprehensive. More than fifty scientists, engineers; and medical personnel in the Center are engaged in respirable dust research. Additionally, the expertise and facilities of the NIOSH--Division of Respirable Disease Studies are available as a result of the existing relationship between NIOSH and West Virginia University.The breakdown of the dust research program into the five areas mentioned above recognizes the importance of an integrated fundamental research approach to the respirable dust problem compatible and complementary with the existing and ongoing U.S. Bureau of Mines activities. The specific projects in the research areas are a result of a careful evaluation of the past and ongoing research activities, the identification of areas where data and information are scarce, and awareness of the recommendation of the National Academy of Sciences Study on the Measurement and Control of Respirable Dust. Penn State is the administrative unit for the Center. Funding to date is nearly $6.5 million."

"On April 22, 1980, the Ontario government introduced a totally new incentive program for mineral exploration in the province to be effective September I, 1980. Replacing the former Mineral Exploration Assistance Program (MEAP) and also the assistance formerly provided to the mining sector under the Small Business Development Corporations Act, the new Ontario Mineral Exploration Program (OMEP) promises to offer a valuable benefit to certain eligible applicants.Unfortunately, the program is not without its shortcomings: the eligibility for grants or tax credits under the program is comparatively restrictive, and an October 1980 federal budget provision to amend income tax legislation would blunt some of the originally intended attractiveness of the grants and credits.IntroductionIn his budget of April 22, 1980, Ontario Treasurer Frank Miller introduced a new incentive program to encourage mineral exploration in the province.The Ontario Mineral Exploration Program (OMEP) replaces the Mineral Exploration Assistance Program (MEAP), which will be phased out by March 31, 1981. Exploration programs approved under MEAP will continue to qualify for incentives under that program, but will not qualify for OMEP."

"FOREWORDFerrograde manganese ore or its equivalent is essential to the manufacture of every ton of steel produced; although it is well known that there are large deposits of low-grade are in the United States, the production of substantial amounts of ferrograde material from domestic sources presents a problem that becomes more and more critical as the stockpiled ore depleted through inability to procure adequate supplies from foreign sources. Consequently, a program of laboratory,and pilot-plant investigation designed to solve the problem of obtaining a domestic supply of manganese has been undertaken by the Metallurgical Division, Bureau of Mines.This paper is one of a new series that include reports of results obtained in the various investigations conducted under the manganese program.
