To model the zinc pressure leach, equations have been written that describe the rates of individual reactions taking place, including (a) oxygen mass transfer, (b) ferrous oxidation by dissolved oxygen, and (c) ferric reactions with ZnS and other minerals. In the continuous process, at steady-state, these take place at the same rate, and so the equations can be solved simultaneously. Model calculations using simultaneous equations are shown in graphical form to demonstrate the effect of different variables on the leach performance.

Heavy media separation serves to upgrade mill feed and reduce unit operating costs, allowing ores to be mined which could other wise be uneconomic. At the Aberfoyle mine at Rossarden in north-east Tasmania, a simple heavy media operation using a converted Akins screw classifier as a separating vessel, removes barren quartz from mineralised material. At the Cleveland mine at Luina on the west coast of Tasmania a more complex ore mix requires a versatile operation combining hydro-dynamic and static separation equipment to provide an efficient beneficiation circuit. The two operations are briefly described with a background of basic heavy media separ- ation practice.

When a furnace-manager is '(blowing in," he generally has no time to consider the composition of the waste gas, and does not bother with it, except to take care that he does not get " gassed." Moreover, the analysis of the gases while the wood is still burning has not much to do with the economy of the normal working of the furnace; yet, on account of the deadly effects of the " blowing-in " gas when inhaled, and of its high explosive qualities, it is interesting to know its composition. Underground support has a long history as evidenced by Agricola's general description in Dc Re Metallica:1 "The timbering of these openings is done as follows: stulls are set at intervals into hitches in the hanging and footwall, and upon them smooth poles are laid continuously; and that they may be able to bear the weight, the stulls are generally a foot and a half thick. After the ore has been taken out and the mining of the vein is being done elsewhere, the rock then broken, especially if it cannot be taken away without great difficulty, is thrown into these openings among the timbers, and the carriers of the ore are saved toil, and the owners save half the expense. This, then, generally speaking, is the method by which everything related to the timbering of shafts, tunnels, and drifts is carried out."

A 250 tons per day ammonia-ammonium carbonate leaching plant is now being operated by Samin Limited, to extract copper from the oxidised ores at the Burra mine. This forms the first stage of a plant, which will eventually have a capacity in excess of 1,000 tons per day. The article reviews the history of the mines at Burra and the metallurgical studies which have been undertaken since the old mines closed in 1917, in an endeavour to recover the copper from the low-grade deposits left by the original miners. The reasons why an ammonia leaching process was selected instead of the conventional flotation or acid leaching methods are discussed. The paper concludes with a detailed description of the plant and the basis on which it was designed.

To identify and characterize potential domestic chromium resources, the Bureau of Mines investigated podifom chromite deposits along the Border Ranges Fault in southern Alaska. Part 1 of this two-part report describes an extensive field investigation and preliminary resource evaluation studies by the Bureau's Alaska Field Operations Center. This paper, part 2, describes the mineralogy of 38 samples that were collected from low-grade deposits in the Chugach Mountains, on the Kenai Peninsula, and on Kodiak Island, and presents the results of laboratory batch beneficiation tests designed to concentrate the chromite. The samples are peridotites and chromites that consist primarily of variable amounts of chromite, olivine, and serpentine. They were beneficiated by a sequence of grinding, sizing, and gravity concentration operations. Twenty-four high-chromium or marginal high-chromium chromite concentrates, six high-iron or marginal high-iron chromite concentrates, and five submarginal concentrates were produced with chromium recoveries that ranged from 37 to 95 pct. Three very low-grade samples were not beneficiated. These results indicate that several of the de- posits may be significant chromium resources, Potential precious metals association with the chromite was also investigated. Analysis of these samples indicates that the chromite deposits are not good platinum sources.

The paper describes the current density increase within the last 150 years. From the beginning in 1885 at 30 A/m² up to the highest used current densities nowadays at 420 A/m² towards future pathways were even 1000 A/m² can be achievable. A short tour through history will highlight the milestones of the process of electrolytic refining of copper. Besides the improvement of the existing technology, the biggest changes leading to higher possible current densities are linked to the introduction of the ISA stainless steel plates and the introduction of the parallel flow principle. Furthermore, the parameters influencing the limitations regarding current density and therefore the practical used current density as well as the influence from the chemical composition of the electrolyte is discussed. Finally, the possibility of further increasing the current densities by enhancing the relative movement between electrolyte and electrode will give an outlook about the future of the copper electrolysis process. INTRODUCTION The current density is the most important characteristic to describe the productivity of a copper refining electrolysis besides the characteristic number for the electrical efficiency. Over the last 150 years, current density has risen from a few amperes per square meter to over 400 A/m² without any significant change in the principle of electrolytic refining. This increase in current density is documented exemplary by the electrolysis of Montanwerke Brixlegg in Austria (Brixlegg, 1963, 2013). The very beginning of the technology of electrolytic refining of copper was first patented in England by James Elkington in 1865 and the first electrolytic copper refinery was built in Newark, New Jersey, in 1883 (Armstrong, 1999). The secondary smelter Montanwerke Brixlegg, Austria, has been operating an electrolysis plant since 1884. In 1988, the third "Mount Isa" electrolysis plant worldwide and the first in Europe was put into operation in Brixlegg. Since 2010, the so-called high-current electrolysis (parallel flow METTOP-BRX Technology) with a current density of approx. 400 A/m² has been operated in half of the electrolysis process.

The cases of no auxiliary ventilation and ventilation with tubing were mathematically modeled, using a turbulent dispersion model. The scooptram that is used to load is modeled as a variable-speed, variable-strength source of pollutants moving in and out of the dead-ended drift. Model predictions are compared to experimental measurements. A parametric analysis was performed to determine the effect of exhaust pipe location and time spent out of the drift, as well as to determine if a relationship existed between CO2 and NO levels. It was concluded from this analysis that when modeling a load-haul-dump cycle, it is necessary to use a model that has the capability of predicting changes in source strength as well as source location. It was also determined that four relevant factors include effective heading height, apparent longitudinal diffusion coefficient, transverse concentration gradient at the face, and average dispersion width of the exhaust jet. As these factors change with heading geometry and ventilation configuration, they were determined experimentally, Carbon dioxide was used as a tracer to calibrate the model; since, knowing the fuel flow rate, it is possible to calculate CO2 production. The above four factors in the computer model were calculated using a regression analysis, comparing predicted local concentrations to measured local concentrations. The model was then verified after this calibration process using additional experimental results. With the calibrated model, it is possible to predict pollutant concentrations at any location in the heading using an engine map and the previously calculated flow field. A parametric analysis shows that the exhaust pipe location can have a significant impact on operator exposure to exhaust gases. It was also shown that NO concentration varies directly with C02 levels. Predictions using the dynamic model are contrasted with constant source strength (pollutant flow rate) results. An analysis of these predictions for computing time-weighted average NO shows the dynamic model predictions of operator exposure to this pollutant to be less than one-half of the value predicted using a constant source model.

THE John Fritz Medal Board of Award, at its regu¬lar annual meeting Oct. 19, awarded its gold medal to Herbert Clark Hoover. Thus ended a process of selection begun a few years ago. The award was tentatively made a year ago by the Board, which is composed of sixteen recent past-presidents of the four national societies of Civil, Mining and Metallurgical, Mechanical, and Electrical Engineers, having together a membership of nearly 60,000. The possibility of diamonds occurring in Canada was first raised by W. H. Hobbs in 1899, who concluded: "that the apex of the fan of diamond distribution probably lies somewhere in the strip of the territory bordering James Bay on the east." This was based on the occurrence of diamonds in surficial sediments at various locations south of the Great Lakes. There are two recorded discoveries of drift diamonds in Ontario: (a) the Peterborough Diamond, 33 carats in size, poorly documented and found sometime before 1920;and (b) the Jarvi Diamond, 0.255 carat, found during 1971 in Sheraton Township near Timmins . Both discoveries were in surficial sediments and their source(s) have not been located. During 1960, Selco Exploration Company Ltd. started a heavy-mineral sample program of river gravels in the James Bay Lowlands of Ontario. This was continued by Canadian Rock Company Ltd. (1962-1963) and the Ontario Division of Mines (1973). The surveys discovered the presence of kimberlite minerals in gravel samples from streams draining the Moose River Basin. A total of 53 pyrope grains, four magnesian ilmenites and one grain of chrome diopside were identified from 32 sample locations. A study of the distribution of these minerals suggested the kimberlite source rocks to be located along the north margin or within the Kapuskasing gravity "high" in the area immediately south of James Bay. The Jarvi Diamond, found on an esker east of Timmins, could well have originated from this area. During 1965, an esker was sampled by the Geological Survey of Canada, and the results attracted attention to the area south of Lake Abitibi. At 9 out of 34 sites sampled along the Munro esker, Lee recorded the presence of pyrope garnets and very minor chrome diopside.

During the past two decades, we have witnessed the computer revolution. Like other revolutions, it has been successful in many ways; however, it has not been without difficulties. One of the areas where these difficulties have been more prevalent has been in the application of computers for the purpose of controlling industrial processes. During the early 1960's, many people naively assumed that bridging the gap between data processing and process control was a simple matter of connecting a few wires, doing a little programming, laying off most of the people and watching the plant make great increases in production as the lights on the computer blinked on and off. Unfortunately, it has not been that simple. Instead, a whole new-set of disciplines has been required to overcome the major obstacles that exist. Nevertheless, current successes are proving that the digital process control computer is here to stay, and that through the application of digital computers an attractive return on investment can be obtained in many applications.. The purpose of this paper is to illustrate some of the requirements for successful implementation of computer control systems, with particular attention to the following four objectives: First: Acquaint the reader with the general control problems so that he may more fully recognize the major requirements for successful implementation. Second: To acquaint the reader with the types of control hardware that can be considered for use in the development of control systems. Third: To discuss some of the major obstacles that must be overcome for successful implementation of computer control systems. Fourth: To discuss the systems approach in the development of control systems and to illustrate it in the implementation of an actual control system.

The upsurge in cobalt price and demand is propelled by high demand from the electronics and electric vehicle industry. Konkola Copper Mines has cobalt occurring with copper in the ratio 1:10 in ore. The ore is treated in the concentrator and recovered at the smelter as an alloy (Cu 70%, Co 4%–7%, 15% Fe). Subsequent processing of the cobalt alloy is challenging, with very few plants able to treat it, leading to marketing challenges. Konkola Copper Mines sought to improve the cobalt alloy by producing a slag that is easier to handle and process in subsequent processes. Cobalt alloy (3.60% Co, 85.4% Cu) was re-melted in a copper bath four times the mass of the alloy. Silica and lime were added for phase separation and fire refining commenced. Following completion of fire refining and after holding the temperature at 1200°C, cobalt-rich slag was skimmed and blister copper was cast into anodes for electrorefining

The Bureau of Mines is conducting a study of methods to improve the efficiency of the process used to pickle stainless steels. A review of the literature on pickling of stainless steels showed that the chemistry of several process operations involved in the pickling of stainless steels is not fully understood, and that further research could improve the pickling efficiency. The benefits of this research would be a reduction in the annual loss of several thousands of tons of critical minerals such as nickel and chromium, and a reduction in the amount of solids and spent acid solution that are currently discarded. The conclusion from this review is that further research is needed in four operations that either directly or indirectly influence the pickling process: hot working, annealing, conditioning, and the actual operation of pickling, Laboratory studies of the pickling operation are presently in progress.

In New Brunswick, during the 1970's, rocks of the Lower Carboniferous Windsor Group in the Moncton Basin of the Fundy Epieugeosyncline have been the target of intense exploration and drilling programs. Sylvinite ore was discovered in three structural basins of the Moncton Basin near Sussex through a drilling program sponsored jointly by the Federal Department of Regional Economic Expansion and the New Brunswick Department of Natural Resources. In 1973, exploration and development rights to the western end of the Moncton Basin were awarded to the Potash Company of America. One high-grade sylvinite unit, varying between 15 and 70feet in true thickness, with a strike length in excess of 5 miles, is located near the stratigraphic top of the assymetric, semi-diapiric, locally overturned anticline. Late in 1975, exploration and development rights to the Marchbank Syncline were awarded to International Minerals and Chemical Corporation (Canada) Limited. To date, a stratigraphic evaporite sequence, forming the semi-diapiric core of the syncline, has been shown to contain one major high-grade sylvinite unit averaging 70 feet in true thickness over a strike length in excess of 2 miles. Both properties appear to have potential considerably in excess of that revealed by the exploratory drilling, and both, because of numerous mineralogical, structural and stratigraphic similarities, are thought to be depositionally contemporaneous. Both potash deposits lie within 50 miles of the Saint John all-weather deepwater port, thus affording easy access to eastern and mid-western U.S. markets. Further opportunities for potash exploration in New Brunswick are considered excellent, as there are large untested areas with favourable geology and known potassium water anomalies and negative gravity anomalies occurring in the Moncton and Cumberland basins, and in the Central Basin of New Brunswick.

The engineering geophysicist is not called upon to investigate geological basins or extensive mineralized areas or to probe for data to thousands of feet in depth. "This paper describes the revisions to the heating and ventilating system at the Frood-Stobie mill, which resulted in substantial savings in energy costs.IntroductionInco Metals Company, a unit of Inco Limited, is involved in the mining and processing of nickel-copper ores. The Ontario Division of Inco Metals consists of 10 operating mines, with 5 mines and open pits on a standby basis, and 10 pro- cessing facilities, located in Sudbury, Port Colborne and Shebandowan. In 1980, the Ontario Division's energy expenditures amounted to $87,000,000.Due to the accelerating cost of energy, the Division established an Energy Management Program in 1975 to define, evaluate and implement measures to reduce energy cost and consumption per unit of output by 10% by 1980. This falls in line with the goals set by the mining and metallurgical task force on voluntary energy conservation.To effectively implement the program, Plant Committees were established at each plant and mine area, with an energy management coordinator appointed to coordinate the activities. The Plant Committee's responsibilities include identifying the major areas of energy consumption, isolating areas with large potential losses and determining what action should be taken to improve energy efficiency.Within a five-year period from 1975 to 1980, the Ontario Division has been able to cut its energy consumption by 8.9 trillion BTUs, the equivalent of 1.5 million barrels of oil."

Cable bolts are being used more extensively by the mining industry for many different rock reinforcement applications. The configuration of these bolts has evolved over the last 20 years to meet the immediate needs of industry at the particular time. Most improvements to date have focussed on increasing the mechanical performance with little attention given to issues such as ease of handling, matching response to that of the rock mass or corrosion protection. Ultrastrand has been designed and being developed with this broad perspective in mind so that it will satisfy the ground reinforcement needs of today's and tomorrow's mining industry.Laboratory tests on Ultrastrand prototypes have confirmed that mechanical performance is superior or equivalent to Standard and Birdcage Strand respectively. Preliminary discussions have been held with an installation equipment manufacturer with a view to conducting a trial at a mine site by early-1992.

This paper presents the results of grinding tests performed on magnetite from Kiruna (Sweden) and on chromite from Skoumtza (Macedonia. Greece). Stresses were measured by XRD, which determined the variations in the characteristic structural spacings of the minerals both before and after, grinding in a HSM/250 Herzog laboratory ring mill. Anal Isis of the magnetite and c hromite crystallinstallin was performed hi measuring the broadening of the strongest diffraction peak (311). .Also, structural analysis on chromite was carried out using the Mikheev model. Ultrafine-grinding tests on the magnetite and chomite demonstrated that this type of treatment can induce profound variations m the surface-stress state. These included plastic variations of the cell followed by "chemical" stress with oxidation front the stricture to form hydroxide or carbonate, films. This can have a great influence on the mineral reactivity to flotation reagents

The ternary system A14C3-AIN-Al203 has been examined to determine compositions which may display desirable high-temperature refractory properties. Powder methods were employed in the synthesis of all test compositions. Forming and sintering behavior was examined and hot-pressing parameters were measured. Several properties were studied for each composition of interest in the system. The properties included hydrolysis rate in moist air, elevated temperature oxidation rate, density, softening point, tensile strength, and rupture strength. In most cases equilibrium was not achieved, and the data are representative of a nonequilibrium system. Approximately 16 separate phases have been observed in the system. Forming behavior and selected properties of five compositions of interest were compared with those of aluminum oxide and aluminum nitride. None of the compositions compared favorably. Oxidation and vaporization appear to be serious drawbacks to the use of these compositions at elevated temperatures.
