In the past few years, much effort has been spent in elucidating the impact of diesel engines on the mine environment. This paper summarizes diesel fundamentals , exhaust emissions and typical tailpipe concentrations. Mine sampling results and an evaluation of exhaust treatment systems are discussed. A review of changes in pollutant concentrations between the tailpipe and the mine exit is made and suggestions are given to reduce operator exposure to diesel contaminants.

L-D gold mine is 3 miles south of Wenatchee, central Washington. Recognition of locally mappable conglomerates, sandstones, and shales within the Paleocene (?) Swauk formation led to the discovery that the known epithermal gold mineraliza¬tion is limited to a previously unknown imbricate thrust zone of unknown displace¬ment cutting the open folds o f the area. Hypabyssal intrusions also are most nu¬merous along the trace of the thrust faults. Yakima basalt of Miocene age uncon¬formably overlies the Swauk formation, thrust faults, and the intrusions. The L-D mine is in a northwesterly trending imbricate fault block of nearly vertical strata. Microscopic native gold, electrum, and naumannite occur in quartz veins and as low¬grade disseminations in the well-silicified portions of arkosic sandstones. Fault gouge on the "footwall fissure" limits ore to the hanging-wall block of the fault. Epithermal mineralization and alteration are spatially related to the nearby intrusions. Right lateral north-south faults offset the ore a maximum of 300-400 ft along any one fault. From 1949 until January 1967, when the L-D mine closed, 1,036,572 dry tons of ore valued at $14,962,305 and averaging 0.396 oz Au per ton and 0.607 oz Ag per ton were mined. Recognition of the structural control of the mineralization and altera¬tion within the Swauk formation suggests several areas within and outside of the mine that warrant further exploration. For example, the high-angle faults, imbricate thrusts, and the intrusions of this area are on strike with similar features along the major Entiat fault zone 10 miles to the northwest. The L-D gold mine (previously called Squilchuck, Wenatchee, Golden King, Gold King, and Lovitt) is located in Squilchuck Canyon about three miles south of Wenatchee, Chelan County, Wash. (Fig. 1) on the eastern edge of the Cascade Mountains. The major stratigraphic unit in the area is the nonmarine early Tertiary Swauk formation, which is predominantly com¬posed of arkosic sandstone. The lack of laterally per¬sistent units and the paucity of outcrops heretofore have precluded all but the grossest subdivision of the Swauk.' As a result, the true significance of the open folds in the Wenatchee area was not recognized, and although the geology within the mine was known, the structural setting of the mine was virtually unknown. During the present investigation, several locally map¬pable units were discovered within the Swauk which, in conjunction with mine maps, indicate an imbricate thrust zone. The epithermal gold mineralization, most of the hypabyssal intrusions, and the zones of hydrother¬mal alteration are located within or near this thrust zone. The purpose of this paper is to: (1) to describe this structural setting, rather than the detailed mine geology already presented by Lovitt and Skerl,2 and (2) to sug¬gest that from an exploration standpoint, this struc¬tural setting may be repeated in areas inside and outside of the mine area. Stratigraphy and Structure of the Swauk Formation General: The Swauk formation contains three distinct lithologies. A mathematical model describing the leaching of low grade industrial waste dumps in developed and solved by finite difference techniques. The leaching behavior of model dumps of different sizes, permeabilities, and waste characteristics, under different operating conditions, is then investigated using the model. It is shown that leaching is fastest for dumps 50-100 feet (15-30m) high, that permeability is very important for the effective leaching of large dumps, that slow leach kinetics of the waste may not be detrimental, and that the leaching of large dumps may be facilitated if leach solutions are preferentially applied to the hot, near-edge portions of the dump.

Erosion corrosion of 12 alloys in phosphoric acid waste water was studied by the Bureau of Mines. Tests were conducted on oblate spheroids or cylindrical specimens in 12-and 60-cm-diam ball mills by grinding phosphate rock in gypsum pond water with a starting pH of 1.6. For comparison, tests were conducted while grinding phosphate rock in plain water. Static corrosion tests in gypsum pond water also were conducted. For all alloys, the wear by erosion-corrosion (milling with gypsum pond water) was greater than the sum of erosion (milling with water) plus static corrosion. Erosion-corrosion wear was about 1,500 to 3,000 mpy for the alloyed white cast irons, 1,000 to 1,400 mpy for commercial steel ball material and type 316 stainless steel, and 600 to 900 mpy for nickel-base alloys and a high-manganese, nitrided stainless steel. Alloy costs per unit of phosphate rock 'processed favor a low-alloy, high-carbon steel or a high-manganese, nitrided stainless steel.

This paper shows an evaluation about effect of dispersant sodium silicate along to limestone, in the form of pulp, on the cold agglomeration process for iron ore sintering. Before that, it was verified the effect of pH, solids content and amount of dispersant on the stability of the system (limestone, water and sodium silicate). It was found that the lower the solids content, the more alkaline pH and the amount of sodium silicate equal to 20 l for each 1t of limestone, was the level of dispersion of the system. The influence of the limestone pulp with dispersant depended on the granulometry of the ore mixture and the type of technological route. For the thinner type (42,8% <0.15mm), the limestone pulp with dispersant reduced the resistance of the adherent layer of the cold agglomerates, regardless of the technological route. However, for the coarser type (24,7% <0.15mm), the limestone pulp with dispersant increased the average size of the aggregates, preserving the resistance of the adherent layer when manufacturing with two intensive mixers in series.

Approximately half of all the fuel energy used in the United States is now pro-vided by oil and natural gas. A persistent and rapid growth in energy demand during the last 3 decades has been absorbed largely by the liquid and gaseous rather than solid fuels. In 1948 the energy provided by coal was substantially the same as in 1920. Meanwhile, the use of oil and natural gas each had increased fivefold. On a per capita basis, the change is more significant. Coal consumption has dropped from about 6 tons per person to 4-1/2 tons, while oil has increased from 4-1/3 barrels to 14-1/3, and natural gas from 7,500 cubic feet to about 35,000. These facts would have only academic interest if the United States had unlimited supplies of all fuels. However, while the Nation&apos;s reserves of coal are adequate to meet our needs for centuries, those of oil and natural gas appear limited. It is obvious, therefore, that the security of our liquid-fuel position would be greatly enhanced if the supply could be based in an increasing degree on solid fuels, such as coal/and oil shale, which make up more than 95 percent of our fuel reserves, instead of natural oil and gas. In addition, this would create new employment and help to stabilize the market for coal, which may be facing comparatively bleak prospects in the near future unless its position with respect to other fuels is improved.

Introduction A comprehensive study of the economics of processes for smelting iron ores has been made by the Ontario Research Foundation on behalf of the Ontario Research Commission. This survey has included investigations of all processes in commercial use, and proposed processes which are still in the experimental stage. The two main objects of this work were to discover (l) whether any known processes would be particularly suited to present and future Canadian conditions, and (2) whether any new process would be of assistance in solving the present scrap shortage in Canada. The future prospects of the Canadian iron smelting industry have changed radically in the past ten years. For nearly twenty years before 1939 no iron ore was mined in Canada. The ore used was imported, mainly from the United States and Newfoundland. The economics of iron blast-furnace smelting always force the location of blast furnaces near the source of coal for making high-grade metallurgical coke, and near the market for iron and steel, rather than near the iron ore. Blast-furnace installations in Canada are confined to the north shores of the Great Lakes with ready access to United States coal and ore and the major Canadian markets, and to Nova Scotia near the coalfields of that Province. This distribution of primary smelting capacity naturally results in relatively high prices for iron and steel in the West, the North, and in Quebec.

Ontario Division of The International Nickel Company of Canada, Limited, operates five under- ground mines and one open pit on the rim of the Sudbury basin. In 1962, the total underground ore production was over 10 million tons which was mined mainly by blasthole and caving methods with the remainder by cut-and-fill, square set and undercut-and-fill techniques. Because of the large expenditures required annually for explosives, a great deal of study has been devoted toward cost reduction in this field. The large saving effected by ammonium nitrate-fuel oil combination at the open pits, along with reports of its success in underground mining in Sweden, generated much interest in the possibility of its use as a replacement for high explosives in the underground operations at Inco. In June, 1960, a research engineer was assigned to this project, and preliminary investigations soon indicated substantial savings and important safety advantages. The final results of the program were successful beyond any expectations and ANFO is now used exclusively in all Inco mining operations in Ontario except shaft sinking.

Declining gold grades, mineralogical complexity of ore bodies, increasing input costs, more stringent conditions in the licenses to operate, and uncertain gold price dynamics combine to exert significant ongoing pressure on margins of gold producers. Innovative approaches of extracting the metal from its ores are required to realize value from existing and future assets. In a conventional gold processing plant, size reduction of mined ore to produce floatable or leachable product is a significant cost contributor. A step change in cost reduction will be attained if radically energy efficient grinding approaches can be developed, replacing tumbling mills. In the path towards that goal, some quick wins are possible through waste rejection before grinding, and pre-treatment of mill feed to reduce grinding energy demands. Gold locked in complex mineralizations puts pressure on margins by increasing cost per oz (typically high $/t and low metal recoveries) in the hydrometallurgical steps. Gold miners are primarily price takers. The current narrow range of gold uses (predominantly investment and jewellery) is not an entirely desirable state. Some diversification into commercial uses would potentially be a price stabilizer. In this paper, promising research directions, some not always fully explored in the gold metallurgy research space, are highlighted to stimulate radical innovation for substantial value enhancements. The author strongly believes a shift from a traditionally conservative and incremental innovation approach to a more aggressive one, across all aspects of the gold metallurgy value stream (processes to products), is what the industry needs. This report presents the results of washability examinations of seven coals from the principal coal-producing fields of Montana. A complete performance test of the Baum-type jig operated at one of the mines is included, as are the results of cleaning tests made on two of the coals in a dense-medium pilot plant. The coals examined from the Red Lodge, Bull Mountain, and Forsyth fields are comparatively easy to clean. Ash contents of 5 to 10 percent can be obtained at yields of washed coal ranging from 90 to 95 percent. The coal from the Great Falls field, however, could not be cleaned readily to less than 14 percent ash, and the rejection of impurity would amount to over 25 percent. The two coals treated in the dense-medium pilot plant were characterized by sharp separation of impurity, high recovery efficiency, and satisfactory reduction in ash content.

"Severe drilling conditions and difficult mud problems are briefly out-lined as the major cost items in all production operations. The chief problems discussed are abnormal pressures, high temperature, trouble-some shales, and low rates of penetration. These problems have been eliminated or greatly reduced in many areas by• the proper application of recently developed drilling mud products and techniques. These severe problems and their solutions are discussed generally: the application of high-density weighting materials to overcome abnormal pressures; surfactant muds with sodium polyacrylate as a solution for deep and high-temperature drilling; shale control muds and new dispersants for severe shale problems; and low-solids emulsions and •extreme-pressure lubricants for greatly improved rates of penetration."

A preferred orientation is known to occur frequently in the columnar zone of castings. This has been attributed to a preferred direction of growth. However, no satisfactory mechanism was proposed by which the preferred direction of growth led to the preferred orientation. The purpose of this work has been to establish this mechanism. It has been found that in general the observed preferred orientations only develop when the preferred directions of growth reveal themselves by dendritic growth. A mechanism based on this premise is found to be in agreement with the experimental data obtained in the course of this work. WHEN a liquid metal is allowed to solidify in a mold, it usually freezes in three stages, distinguished from each other by the size and shape of the grains. The first zone to freeze (the chill zone near the mold wall) consists of relatively fine grains that are equiaxed in shape and random in orientation. The next zone consists of crystals that are elongated in the direction of heat flow, i.e., normal to mold wall. These crystals are much larger in cross section than the crystals of the chill zone and have a very strongly preferred orientation. This is the columnar zone. The final zone, which is absent in very pure metals, is again equiaxed and randomly oriented, but usually has a much coarser grain size than the chill zone. The purpose of this study is to describe and account for the crystal size and orientation in the columnar zone. The occurrence of a preferred orientation in the columnar zone is well known, and in 1940, Greninger&apos; suggested that it is apparently related to dendritic growth although at that time the only data were for metals with the face-centered-cubic structure. Table I shows that the direction of dendritic growth and the crystal axis that follows the heat flow direction coincide in all cases so far studied. The term "dendritic growth" is used here to represent the branched type of morphology that is characteristic of growth into supercooled melts.&apos; In addition to the supercooling which is necessary before nucleation will occur at the mold wall, the necessary supercooling for continued dendritic growth can be provided in a mold by heat flow into the already formed solid at an interface whose Liquidus temperature is depressed by an accumula-

ALMOST every metallurgist who has given the Howe Memorial Lecture has had a personal contact with the distinguished gentleman to whose honor this hour is devoted. Unfortunately for me, such personal contacts were not possible. However, in the preparation of a thesis on the open-hearth process, one of my earliest tasks was to make a survey of the literature, and it was from Professor Howe&apos;s Metallurgy of Iron and Steel that I drew a number of references to previous work which formed the foundation for my reading. In his volume there is such a complete exposition of the then current thought on the subject of slags and on their role in the elimination of phosphorus from steel that I feel no hesitation in discussing in this Howe Lecture the subject of "Slag Control." In the present era of close specification, the drive for uniformity of product, and the close inspection of the product and of the cost sheet, the utmost efforts must be made to control the steelmaking variables to the best advantage of the steel producer. One of the major variables is the slag in the furnace and its effect upon the composition and quality of the metal. What advantages are to be gained from slag control? In the broad sense the advantages must be tremendous, because the very foundations of good steel melting are based on "shaping up" the slag to a point where, with proper temperature, the heat is ready for the final additions. Every melter works toward these ends through his experience with innumerable heats of steel. The elimination of undesirable constituents such as phosphorus and sulphur is entirely a matter of slag composition and physical nature, a point well known for over half a century. The role played by the slag in assisting in proper heat transfer from roof and flame to the steel has been equally well known. In more recent years there has come the problem of oxygen control in the more accurate gaug-ing of additions for making high-grade rimmed steel for the new strip mills, and in the deoxidizing additions for grain-size control and cleanli-ness of forging steels, both carbon and alloy. In this problem the oxidiz-ing characteristics of the slag are of prime importance.

The Division is concerned with physical methods as applied to geo-logical research and mapping. An at-tempt is made to describe long-term goals, illustrated by examples of projects in the fields of aeromagnetic interpretation, palaeomagnetic re-search, Pleistocene and groundwater geophysics, seismic surveying, electromagnetic research and instrument development. Cooperative projects in surveys and research, with universities, private companies and provincial organizations, are frequently undertaken. An outstanding example of this is the recently approved Federal-Provincial Aeromagnetic Survey Plan, the purpose of which is discussed both from an economic and a scientific point of view.
