AS predicted by Messrs. Fuqua and Thompson, in last year's paper on West Texas1, 1935 saw a marked increase in activity in this area over recent years. Both major and independent operators shared in the increased wildcatting operations, which resulted in the discovery of eight and probably nine new fields in this area. During 1935 there were 700 wells completed as compared with 468 in 1934 and only 236 in 1933. Of these completions 579 were producers with a total 24-hr. potential of over 700,000 bbl. It is estimated that the new fields discovered during 1935 added from 200,000,000 to 400,000,000 bbl. to the known oil reserve in West Texas. In addition to these new fields, many of the older producing areas scored marked extensions during the year. New Fields Goldsmith.—-The Goldsmith field, in west central Ector County, gives promise of being the year's outstanding discovery in this area. The discovery well was completed by the Gulf Production Co. in June at a depth of 4177 ft.; it gaged 275 bbl. of 36° gravity oil in 3 hr. through 85/8-in. casing on its first production test. The field has been extended to the east by wells drilled by Phillips and Pure on their Cowden block. Present indications are that the field may contain 10,000 productive acres, and this, together with the large flush production from only a small penetration into the pay, leads to the belief that Gulf-Goldsmith No. 1 was the outstanding Permian lime discovery of 1935. It is quite probable that production will prove to be continuous to the Landreth-Scarborough No. 1, 33/4 miles to the northwest, which was completed for a small producer late in 1934. Sand Hills (Ordovician).—From the standpoint of creating excitement, the outstanding West Texas test of the year was no doubt Gulf-Waddell No. 1, on the northwest nose of the Sand Hills structure. This test was started late in 1934 as a deep test to the Ordovician. Thc Ordovician was topped above 6000 ft,., considerably higher than expected. "During the period October 31 to November 4, 1944, tests were conducted by the Bureau of Mines in the Cascade Tunnel of the Great Northern Railway Cc. to determine the effects upon the tunnel atmosphere of the use of a Diesel freight locomotive through the tunnel. These tests were conducted at the request of the company to ascertain whether undesirable conditions might be caused by the discharge of Diesel engine exhaust gas in the tunnel, which was constructed for an electric haulage system and is not provided with equipment for mechanical ventilation. The use of Diesel locomotives on the division that includes the Cascade Tunnel was under consideration as a means of augmenting haulage facilities for the abnormal freight tonnage that must be handled during wartime.As the Bureau of Mines has received requests for information on the extent of contamination of the air of railroad tunnels by Diesel locomotives, this report was prepared to make available for general information the data obtained during the tests in the Cascade Tunnel. As the test locomotive is of a type used on other railroads, and as the bore and grade of the tunnel and the tonnages moved are comparable to such factors on other roads, the data should be sufficiently representative to be of general interest. The exceptional length of the Cascade Tunnel made it an excellent location for obtaining information on the composition of the tunnel air and on the movement of air induced in the tunnel by the passage of trains.The writers are indebted to C. O. Jenks, vice president of the Great Northern Railway Co., who arranged for the tests, and to the following personnel of the railroad who cooperated in the conduct of the tests: I. E. Marston and Verne Nelson, assistant superintendents of electric operations.The Cascade Tunnel is on the Spokane Division of the Great Northern Railway and pierces the Cascade Mountains some 49 miles west of Wenatchee, Wash. The west end of this division is electrified from Appleyard Station, 2 miles east of Wenatchee, to Skykomish, Wash., a distance of 73 miles. Until the described tests, only electric haulage had been employed through the tunnel since it was first opened to traffic in January 1929.The Cascade is the longest railroad tunnel in the United States - 7.79 miles. The tunnel is single-track, perfectly straight, concrete-lined, and is on an essentially uniform grade of 1.56 percent, ascending from west to east. The cross-sectional area of the tunnel is 314 square feet, the dimensions being shown in figure 1. Elevation of the east portal is 2,880 feet and of the west portal, 2,240 feet."

The rapidly increasing use of motor vehicles in the United States has introduced an entirely new problem in the proper ventilation oftunnels , subways , and other confined spaces through which such machines must pass . This problem was brought to the attention of the Bureau of Mines by the New York and New Jersey State Bridge and Tunnel Commissions with reference to the ventilation of the proposed vehicular tunnel under the Hudson River . This tunnel , consisting of twin tubes 29 feet in diameter and 8500 feet long between entrance and exit , presented an unprecedented problem in ventilation both on account of its length and on account of the traffic density , which is expected to reach a maximum of 1900 vehicles per hour . An exhaustive study by the tunnel engineers of all available data on the amount and composition of automobile exhaust gas disclosed very little information on the percentage of carbon monoxide in motor exhaust gas from the average run of automobiles and trucks under actual operating conditions on the road. It was well known that carburetor adjustment and other operating factors changed the percentage of the poisonous constituent , carbon monoxide , from practically 0 to 12 or 13 per cent ; but no safe estimate could be made of the most probable figure without further investigation .

Technical co-operation activities of the Department of Technical Co-operation for Development of the United Nations Secretariat have included the introduction of electronic data processing techniques in mineral sector projects for several years; computers have been provided to countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America. Advisory services are provided to interested developing countries at their request concerning applications for various uses in mineral sector activities. They include advice on appropriate hardware and software depending upon the requirements of the particular Government. The Department's activities in this area are described. The input from a Group of Experts on this subject convened by the United Nations, and their conclusions and recommendations, are also discussed.

Variations of the EVOP technique are accepted as the foun- dation in the development of Erie Mining Company's mining, concentrating and pelletizing complex at Hoyt Lakes, Minnesota. The basic one-variable- at-a-time technique served its purpose through the laboratory pilot plant as well as the full-scale production sized pilot plant. However, recognition by Erie Mining Company management of the potential of computer application and statistical experimentation in plant operation and testing led to acquisition of an IBM 1620 computer in 1961. Adaptation of established techniques in statistically designed experimentation and analysis of results is presented in actual case form including the following: 1. Determination and use of variance, standard deviation, standard errors; application of t-test in determining true differences between daily aver ages of product assays; formulation of quality control limits; determining sample size; and application of normality tests will be discussed. 2. Use of mathematical modeling and regression analysis for establishing mill storage conditions based on bin level indicator lights. 3. Polyvariable random balance design of a balling circuit test and resultant identification of primary control variables.

This paper deals with an experimental programme carried out with a gold analyser in the period June to September 1979 at Loraine Gold Mines. The results were found to be reproducible, with no overall or conditional bias when the measurements were compared with those obtained from chip samples. The standard error of estimation of a 3 m reef exposure, which was the sampling interval, can be reduced by a factor of 2,5 if the complete stretch is scanned, rather than the taking of one chip sample in its centre. Complete statistical and computational procedures were developed for the fitting of the normal-Iognormal model to observed analyser data and for the determination of the most likely gold grade for a particular analyser measurement. (This corection procedure is necessary since a significant number of negative analyser measurements can be observed.) Panel averages of uncorrected scans showed a small conditional bias relative to those of corrected scans. However, uncorrected panel averages can be used for on-the-spot decisions regarding whole panels. For standard calculations of ore reserves, use should be made of corrected scans. Under reasonable assumptions, the use of the detector in the selective mining of low-grade narrow reefs such as the Basal Reef at Loraine Gold Mines, when compared with the conventional chip-sampling method, can result in a saving of as high as R40 million in present-money terms over the life of a project. The difference could be even larger in a highly variable reef like the B Reef at Loraine Gold Mines.

This report describes a pilot-scale study of a hydrometallurgical process to treat high-grade nickel matte or a nickel-cobalt sulphide precipitate to produce high-purity electrolytic nickel. The first step of the process is the oxidative leaching of the nickel-bearing material by nitric acid; the nitrous gases generated during leaching are reconverted to nitric acid. The crude nickel sulphate nitrate solution is purified and is then subjected to a denitrification step. Nitrate separation is effected either by the crystallization of nickel sulphate or by precipitation of basic nickel carbonate. The electrolyte is prepared from the nitrate-free material and nickel is then recovered by electrolysis of the sulphate solution using insoluble anodes. Some technical and economic problems encountered with this processing route are discussed and the method is compared to the "all-chloride" process developed by Société Le Nickel.

This Is not a highly technical paper, but rather an attempt to give a general outline of coal mining for the benefit of those present who may have little or no experience in the industry, and is intended to give some general knowledge which may help to a better understanding of the problems of the industry. A knowledge of the disposition of workable material is necessary to give a comparison with other mining practices. Coal Is usually found in comparatively fiat seams of varying thickness, whereas other minerals are generally found in highly inclined lodes of variable width. However, even in comparatively flat seams unaffected by faulting, grades can, and do, vary greatly over short distances.This variation causes many local problems in working the small area affected. Even very steep seams, and some are much steeper than 1 in 1, vary considerably not only in grade, but also in direction of grade and level course. This is probably caused by folding during alteration of the shape and form of the basins after deposition.These swellies are common to most coal seams and vary only in extent. This type of variation in grade and direction of grade, while common to most ore bodies, is a matter of great importance in coal mining when it is considered that roadways are driven in the seam itself and have to be graded and made suitable for haulage purposes.The area of ground involved in an individual coal mining operation is often very large; many times larger than most metal mining propositions, and often comprises many thousands of acres.When it is considered that the specific gravity of coal may be only one-fifth of that of some ores mined, and the coal seam may be five or six feet in thickness, the vastness of the area necessary for continuous mining operations over many years will be realised.To achieve comparable outputs, with about five times the bulk of material to handle, much more ground and working places must...

INTRODUCTION The need for Government-sponsored research and development to increase excavation rates and lower costs for tunneling and mining operations in a variety of rock types has been emphasized in a wide range of publications from advisory panels, symposiums on rapid excavation, and individuals. In response to the predicted demands for mining and construction-oriented underground excavations for the next two decades (1970-1989), a comprehensive 10-year, $200-million research program in rapid excavation was proposed by the National Academy of Sciences in 1968 (1). Although the large program recommended by the Academy has not been funded, substantial Government-sponsored research in rapid excavation has been conducted during the past several years. This paper reviews some of the significant research accomplishments obtained under a three-year, $6.6-million research program in rock mechanics and rapid excavation sponsored by the Defense Department's Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) and managed by the Bureau of Mines. In addition to the rock mechanics research, five major phases of excavation; systems analysis, geologic prediction, rock disintegration, ground support, and materials handling were represented by the projects funded under the ARPA program. Experimental work on the properties of high-purity alloys of the copper-man-ganese-zinc system has necessarily required extensive metallographic work to determine the equilibrium conditions in this system. Previous work on these alloys is fragmentary and, unfortunately, based on alloys made with impure grades of manganese, thus introducing significant amounts of iron, silicon, aluminum and carbon. Since these elements are known to affect equilibrium conditions, it became desirable to re-examine these alloys made from the pure metals. The alpha solid solution field was of particular interest and, therefore, was chosen for the initial work, which was outlined to determine the composition limits of this field. Previous Work Heuslerl conducted an extensive survey of the liquid-solid regions of this system and also made an estimate of the solid-phase boundaries at 340°C. The pertinent part of his diagram is given in Fig. I, but it is of limited usefulness, since it applied to a single temperature only and is based on impure alloys under admittedly nonequilib- rium conditions. Bauer and Hansen,2 likewise working with impure alloys, have determined the phase boundaries for alpha-beta brasses containing small amounts of manganese and indicate an increase in the extent of the alpha field with increasing manganese. This is not in accordance with Heusler or with data obtained on pure alloys.3 They also described a third constituent precipitating in the alpha plus beta field below 350' to 400°C. but did not identify this constituent. Guillet4 and Heike and Ledibur6 have also noted this precipitate. Each of these investigators recognized that impurities present in the manganese could and did have an effect on the structure and properties of their alloys. Corson6 in particular pointed out the hardening effects of silicon, aluminum, and carbon in copper-manganese alloys and Heusler reported that his alloys containing more than 25 per cent manganese were extremely brittle. In all probability this brittleness was due to the impurities present. This early work, therefore, should be taken as a general guide for preliminary studies only, and high-purity alloys may be expected to produce different results. The work of the Bureau of Mines laboratories with electrolytic manganese has been briefly summarized by Dean7 but includes only a short section on this system. Later work3 outlined a limited portion of the alpha field in the neighborhood of 65 per cent copper, 10 per cent manganese, and 25 per cent zinc. The present work was under-

Much has been published by various investigators on the use of activated carbon for adsorbing precious metals from cyanide solution and pulp. For the benefit of the reader, a list of these earlier publications appears at the end of this report. The present paper deals only with a process for extracting gold from gold-laden carbon and re-use of the de-adsorbed carbon. At the Getchell mine, Redhouse, Nev., experiments have been in progress for several years concerning the use of activated carbon to adsorb gold from their slime circuit pulp. The experimental work has been successful. Their practice has been to ship the gold-laden carbon to a smelter for treatment, which meant the total loss of the carbon in addition to smelter and freight, charges, all of which proved costly and wasteful.

As high-quality mineral deposits are thoroughly exploited, mines of the future will have to move towards more remote and lower quality projects. With these projects comes an increased business risk to the operator. Even now, mining companies often turn to foreign countries for new deposits to produce, introducing the concept of country risk into their portfolio. Furthermore, feasibility studies often fail to accurately quantify the risks associated with various projects, and as such, this study proposes a technique of risk quantification which can both aid mining companies to evaluate the viability of investment and assist in risk disclosure to public investors for the mining industry of the future. This paper aims to quantify the effects of country risk on the valuation of potential mining projects, using a combination of modular and risk-weighting techniques to evaluate the country risk premium (CRP) required to obtain capital for operation of risky foreign mining projects. The techniques proposed in this paper are demonstrated using fictional examples and then evaluated for accuracy against a recently developed debt-funded precious metal project in a country in the Americas.

IN planning a postwar program for manufactured products, it is essential that the bases for the plans be wisely chosen. First we must make certain assumptions as to the war's ending. Let us assume: (1) complete victory by the United Nations, (2) peace terms that will ensure the direction of the economy of all nations of the world toward peaceful pursuits, and (3) an early ending of the war, that is, before the nations of the world, excluding the enemy, are near the point of physical and spiritual exhaustion. Thus, our manufacturing plants and transportation facilities will still be in good shape. The plants and transportation facilities, as well as the cities of a large part of Europe, however, will be badly crippled. The rich mineral and other raw material resources of the world, little of which was under control. of the Axis powers before the war or will be after the war, will not be used up. Control of these raw materials, or at least an important part of them, will remain in the hands of the strong peaceful nations.

The design of mine airways receives, in general, very little engineering treatment. To a large extent this is, of course, due to the fact that information upon which to base calculations is seldom available in definite form. In many rnines the extent of the workable deposits may not be known at the time an air course is planned, and the length of service is indeterminable. Volume of air required for ventilation rnay also increase with extension of the life of a property, and natural obstacles, such as heavy ground, often place limitations upon the size of opening that can be maintained. Perhaps most of the shafts used in the ventilation of metal mines were originally intended as hoisting shafts, and many of the tunnels and crosscuts similarly used, were also designed as haulage ways or for other operating purposes. Even when a shaft is sunk solely for ventilation, custom usually dictates a size and shape consistent with the type commonly used for ordinary operations, because experience has demonstrated it can be excavated and maintained. In fact, most ventilation openings were never made with any consideration as to economic design for such use. When an air course is required to pass air between different parts of mine workings under a fixed pressure, the size of opening required for a given volume of flow, is, of course, determined by the resistance factor of the air course. It is then impossible to proportion the opening with reference to economics of power consumption, and this paper is limited to the design of openings where ventilation pressure or power consumption may he varied for economic advantage. As the size of an air course is increased, the expense involved in excavation and support is, of course, also increased, but the charge for power is decreased. In the case of a mine that has only a short assured operating life, it would not be ecouomical to provide large openings in order to reduce power bills; but when operations are likely to continue for a long time, the power charge becomes a very important economic factor. Although lack of definite information on such factors as service life and costs of excavation and support affects the design of an air course, it appears, from a mathematical analysis of the problem, that considerable variations may be made in estimating these factors, without greatly

A number of on-stream coal slurry analyzers are presently being developed and commercialized for measuring ash and solids in coal process streams, particularly around flotation circuits. The eventual goal of these efforts is to develop on-line quality control systems for flotation circuits and other fine-coal cleaning operations. As part of this on-line monitoring and control effort, it is important to gain a better understanding of the response of industrial flotation circuits to changing operating conditions. This paper summarizes the results from a detailed sampling program performed at an industrial coal flotation circuit in western Pennsylvania. The testing focused on evaluating the response of the circuit to changes in reagent dosages, operating conditions and feed compositions. The testing indicated that it is desirable to maintain high collector-to-frother ratios to enhance coarse particle flotation. The recovery of fine impurity particles was also proportional to water recovery, due to hydraulic entrainment. Key words: Industrial, Coal, Flotation, Circuit, Reagent, Response.

"In preparing this paper the writer has perforce depended mainly upon published information, including the catalogs and pamphlets issued by importers and dealers such as the Diamond Drill Carbon Co. and J. K. Smit & Zonen. Special acknowledgment is made to various articles published by S. H. Ball. The writer of this paper, however, is alone responsible for statements herein contained and since he has often found it necessary to rationalize apparently conflicting opinions of recognized authorities on this little-known subject, he will welcome constructive criticism from the trade.Two types of diamond are extensively used for industrial purposes. One type, known as bort or bortz (boort, boart, bowr, etc.), consists of diamonds of the gem variety but unfit for cutting into gems. They may be colorless, yellow, brown, or gray. The other type, carbonado, known in the trade as ""carbon"" or ""black diamond,"" differs greatly from the white diamond, being opaque and apparently amorphous or noncrystalline. Actually, instead of forming a large single crystal as in a gem stone, carbon diamond comprises a mass of microscopic crystals that interlock to form a tough, homogeneous material with no planes of cleavage. It is found in various colors -- black, dark green, brown, and gray -- but usually it has .a dark lustrous black surface, with a resinoid or submetallic appearance, often resembling fine-grained steel. Upon exposure to the air the broken surface gradually darkens to an ash-gray color. Ballas is a special type of carbonado in which the crystals are definitely-oriented around a central nucleus. They are harder and tougher than ordinary carbonado but are much scarcer. The Cape ballas is reputed to be not quite so tough as Brazilian ballas but tougher than carbon or bort.The diamond crystals are isometric and take a variety of forms. The cleavage is octahedral and well marked. A crack is easily -started parallel to an octahedral face, and bort or gem diamonds are notoriously brittle, especially when subjected to sudden shock. Even carbonado, while it has a high resistance to slowly applied pressures, may be chipped or broken by a sharp blow.Exposed to radioactive rays, the diamond becomes phosphorescent; this property is often utilized to distinguish it from quartz, topaz, or glass. The unusually high refractive index likewise aids in its identification in the case of a more or less transparent stone. At the temperature of the electric arc, diamond is converted into graphite, another form of Carbon but one of the softest mineral substances. At a much lower temperature, as low as 1,5620 F., the diamond may be burned like ordinary carbon in an atmosphere of oxygen, and according to some authorities there is danger of burning a diamond if overheated even in air."

"The Polaris mining operation (Fig. I) is located on Little Cornwallis Island in the Canadian Arctic, an area with a very limited shipping season and a hostile climate. The operation consists of the underground works, barge-mounted concentrator facilities, concentrate storage and shipping facilities, a personnel accommodation complex and an airstrip.The electrical energy for the operation is provided by four 2.3 MW diesel-generators installed on the barge. The power is distributed through a 4.16 KV system connected directly to the generators and to the large motors. All other loads are supplied at 600 V or 120 V.The power plant has been designed as a Total Energy System with maximum energy efficiency and thus designed for maximum heat recovery. The waste heat recovered on a year 'round basis is expected to be sufficient for the process heating and drying as well as the space heating for offices and accommodations. The engine cooling system consists of two glycol-water loops, a "" cold"" loop for charge air and lube oil cooling and a ""warm"" loop for jacket water cooling. Each loop is complete with heat exchangers f or heat recovery and out-door forced air radiators to dispose of excess heat. A water loop in the concentrator area transfers the heat from the jacket water loop and the exhaust gas boiler to the space heating equipment, the process and the heating system for the accommodations. Part of the exhaust gas is diverted to the concentrate dryers.IntroductionThe Polaris Mine is a highly mechanized, trackless mine with access through a decline. Drill equipment is electrically powered to minimize fumes and heat. Dry development and production drilling eliminates the need for an underground water supply system.The concentrator, power generators, work shops and auxiliary facilities are located on a barge which is beached in a prepared berth on the shore of Crozier Strait. Oil storage tanks, concentrate storage and accommodation buildings are built on shore. The concentrate storage building ha s a 12-month capacity and is fed from the concentrator by a conveyor system.The accommodation building houses up to 240 people, includes administration office, dining and recreation facilities. The complex is housed in on e interconnected building with public use areas alternating with accommodation units.At full production annual concentrate shipments will amount to about 220,000 wet tonnes. This will be accommodated by about 8 shipments during the regular shipping period-August 15 to October 15. Re-supply of general cargo and fuel will be carried out annually in about 3 shipments within the same period."

Shovel excavation constitutes a significant component of production costs in any surface mining operation. This makes shovel loading an important cost center that needs to be improved to lower production costs. Optimization of tool design will improve energy efficiency in earthmoving operations. However, modeling the soil-tool interaction is a complex process due to the fact that forces for excavating particulate material are functions of many variables. The magnitude of this resisting force depends not only on the type of soil but on the size, shape and orientation of the cutting element. Moreover, part of this complexity is attributed to the fact that the behavior of the material during excavation is not yet well understood. For the past five decades, researchers have mostly used the passive earth pressure theory to study the soil failure patterns around a cutting tool and to develop force prediction models for design optimization with some success. Although the force models developed from the passive pressure theory have been successful to some extent, they can hardly be extended to a general case because of the underlying assumptions and simplification of tool shapes. This paper aims at reviewing some of the existing empirical and analytical methods of cutting and excavation tool modeling with a focus on their merits and limitations. The paper also explores the use of numerical methods, specifically the discrete element method, for dealing with the unresolved aspects of soil dynamics in excavation.

Mineral deposits of western Utah and eastern and central Nevada have produced in excess of $8,500,000,000 since 1871. Through 1965, Bingham Canyon had produced over $4,600,000,000 and seven other camps over $100,000,000 each, principally from base metals. In addition, they yield iron and uranium ores; contain the world's largest beryllium reserves; and have produced the United States' most important gold discovery in 25 years. The area is famous for its silver production and its bonanza-type precious metal deposits, but such production has become unimportant. The area's greatest producers of metallic wealth are base-metal deposits in limestones and porphyry-type copper ores. In contrast to silver's decline, gold production has been rising-the result of by-product operations at Bingham Canyon. The area also contains gold deposits in which the gold is so finely disseminated it is not recoverable by panning. The area's gold ores frequently are associated with realgar, cinnabar, and carbon. The ore deposits generally are attributed to Tertiary intrusives,* but, at Mountain City, they may be related to Paleozoic volcanism. Mountain City has yielded rich chalcocite from quartz-pyrite-chalcopyrite bodies in siliceous sediments. Regional stratigraphy and structure are difficult to interpret, 69 per cent of the area being obscured by alluvium or volcanics. In general, central Nevada consists of chert, shale, silty sandstones, lavas, and pyroclastics; eastern Nevada and western Utah of many alternations of limestone, shale, and sandstone. Central Nevada has been structurally active since late Devonian. Although granitic stocks may have intruded eastern Nevada and western Utah prior to the Cretaceous, these areas remained quite stable until affected by the Laramide Revolution. Precambrian exposures, occupying 3 per cent of the area, have not been important hosts. However, the question is raised as to whether Precambrian carbonates, properly situated with respect to invading mineralizers, might yet prove to be important. This paper describes 16 precious metal camps, 6 limestone replacement districts, 2 silver-base metal vein deposits, and 9 miscellaneous types and discusses briefly the 11 * Some ores, as at Ely, are associated with intrusives of. Since 1929, the Helium Activity of the Bureau of Mines has operated a helium-extraction plant at Amarillo, Tex. The natural gas that supplies this plant is obtained from the Cliffside geologic structure 12 miles to the northwest and over the years, has become known simply as "Cliffside gas," There is need for published data on the low-temperature phase equilibria of helium-bearing natural gases. To date, little information has been published on the equilibrium phase compositions, solution of helium in condensed natural gas, condensation characteristics, or equilibrium vaporization coefficients for methane, nitrogen, and helium in helium-containing systems. A windowed phase equilibrium apparatus (8)6 was used to obtain 105 equilibrium samples, representing 35 experimental conditions of condensed Cliffside gas at pressures of 100, 200, 300, 400, and 500 p.s.i.a. and temperatures from 0° to -270° F. Data on equilibrium vapor-liquid composition for Cliffside gas are presented in both tabular and graphic form and are discussed in detail to show their relationship to certain criteria that must be met to effect an efficient separation of helium from natural gas by means of low-temperature processes. Facts about condensation characteristics and solution of helium in the liquid phases are included, The important relationship of these two factors in decreasing the percentage of total helium lost by solution in the liquid phase is discussed.
