Tests have recently been conducted by the Bureau of wines on the ignition hazard of exposing heated filaments of electric mine lam bulbs in an explosive mixture of methane and air. This investigation was undertaken in order to settle a question that had arisen in connection with the safety of miners? electric lamps. For several years, in view of former studies made by the Bureau and reported in Bulletin 524, the fact that the heated filaments of even low voltage, lour candlepower bulbs constitute a danger was generally accepted by the Bureau's engineers. These early tests, as well as subsequent tests, were conducted with Pittsburgh natural was as the testing medium.

Various mechanical properties of the Ni-Co-C alloy system were investigated to delineate the strengthening effect of carbon. Carbon concentration, cobalt concentration, vain size, temperature, and strain rate were varied so that thermal activation analysis and the Hall-Petch analysis could be used to evaluate the strengthening effect of carbon. Increasing carbon increased the strength of nickel and a Ni-60 pct Co alloy , with the effect becoming more pronounced at lower temperatures. Yield stress depended linearly on carbon concentration in nickel, but it depended on the square root of carbon concentration in the Ni-60 pct Co alloy. The Hall-Petch slope of nickel increased with carbon concentration; however, that of the Ni-60 pct Co alloy did not. The yielding behavior of these alloys was sensitive to composition, grain size, and temperature. Cobalt eliminated serrations in the flow curve of carbon-containing nickel at 300' and weakened them severely at higher temperatures. Pairs, or clusters, of carbon atoms appear to be responsible for the observed strengthening behavior. FLINN' conducted several experiments with carbon in nickel in an effort to provide information on the strengthening effect of interstitial impurities in solid solution in fcc metals and alloys. Strengthening which increased with decreasing temperature led him to conclude that carbon causes Cottrell locking in nickel. Fleischer2 analyzed Flinn's data and calculated that the strengthening effect of carbon in nickel was smaller by a factor of fifty than the strengthening effect of carbon in a! iron. Fleischer2 termed the magnitude of strengthening of carbon in nickel "gradual" and that of carbon in a! iron "rapid". He attributed "gradual" hardening to hydrostatic strains and localized changes in modulus of elasticity around solute atoms, whereas he attributed "rapid" hardening to tetragonal strains around solute atoms. Sukhovarov et a1.3-7 reported strain aging and serrated plastic flow in nickel, both of which they attributed to the presence of carbon. Serrated plastic flow has been rationalized by a process involving a series of dislocation pinning and multiplication steps.8, This process is more probable when screw dislocations are strongly pinned. Screw dislocations cannot be pinned by pure hydrostatic forces from the symmetrical strains of an interstitial impurity in an fcc lattice, except for small, second-order effects. However, they might be pinned by localized changes in modulus of elasticity around solute atoms,' by the pinning of the edge components of the partial dislocations of an extended screw dislo~ation,'~ or by clustered groups of solute atoms whose net elastic stress field is unsymmetric. The purpose of the present work was to investigate various mechanical properties of the Ni-Co-C a1loy system which are sensitive to pinning effects in order to delineate the specific pinning mechanism of carbon. Carbon concentration, grain size, temperature, and strain rate were varied so that thermal-activation analysis and the Hall-Petch analysis could be used to evaluate the pinning mechanism. Cobalt was added to lower stacking fault energy so that the number and extension of split, screw dislocations would be increased in order to test the possibility of pinning by carbon at extended screw dislocations. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Nickel and cobalt (both 99.98 pct-. pure) were melted with graphite in stabilized zirconia crucibles and cast at lo-' Torr to form Ni-C and Ni-60 pctCo-C alloys. Two ingots were heated to 1250°C and were forged to 1-in.-sq bars. These bars were machined to 4-in.-round bars, and then swaged cold to 0.144-in. -diam rods. Reductions in area of approximately 75pct were used with intermediate anneals at 900°C for 1 hr. The carbon content of batches of 0.144-in.-diam rods from each ingot was reduced to two levels by annealing 5-in. lengths in palladium-purified, dry hydrogen at 1100°C for 25 and 100 hr. The remaining material from each ingot was annealed at 10"5 Torr for 1 hr at 1100"~. These treatments gave a total of three carbon levels for both the nickel and the Ni-60 pct Co alloy. The 0.144-in.-diam rods were swaged to 70-mil wire, cut into test specimens, and then re crystallized at lom5 Torr in capsules for 1 hr at temperatures ranging from 760" to 1050" ~. The capsules were broken and the specimens were immediately quenched into water. Average grain size was measured using Hilliard's method of circular intercepts." Annealing twin boundary intercepts were counted in addition to grain boundary intercepts to establish an average grain size. Average grain sizes ranged from 5 to 140 p depending on the cobalt concentration and re-crystallization temperature. Tension tests were made in duplicate at various temperatures at a crosshead speed of 8.34 x 10"4 in. per sec with an Instron Universal Testing Machine. The use of the straight-line method of solving the material balance equation is illustrated by means of six field cases. Also, the application of statistical criteria to arrive at the most probable answer is shown. The theory underlying the straight-line method of solution and the applicability of the statistical criteria was presented in a previous paper.' The field cases include saturated and undersaturated oil reservoirs with and without water drive. The aquifers discussed are: limited radial, infinite radial, very small aquifer and infinite linear. The field cases also include a gas reservoir producing under water drive. INTRODUCTION In a previous paper,' the authors presented the theory underlying the solution of the material balance as an equation of a straight line. The appropriate equations for various material balance cases as well as the methods of analysis and interpretation with comments and discussion were also included. To illustrate the various theoretical cases treated previously, five field cases are analyzed in this paper by employing the straight-line method of solving the material balance equation (MBE) and one example previously published is referred to. The use of statistical criteria to arrive at the most probable answer is also shown. All the field examples presented, except Case 2, are excerpts from complete reservoir studies. To illustrate the method, only sections specifically dealing with the material balance principles are included. Additional geologic information and basic data are reported to better acquire an understanding of the cases and thus to better follow the reasoning that suggested the successful application of the straight-line method of solving the MBE. The six cases are: (1) saturated reservoir, small gas cap, limited aquifer; (2) saturated reservoir, very small gas cap, infinite aquifer; (3) undersaturated-saturated reservoir, very small aquifer; (4) highly undersaturated reservoir, no water drive; (5) high undersaturated one-well reservoir, limited aquifer; and (6) gas reservoir, infinite linear aquifer. THE D4 SAND, GUICO FIELD, VENEZUELA The D, sand, which was discovered in 1943, is presently in a depleted state. Since its discovery it has produced under water drive, gas-cap-gas expansion, and solution gas drive. In Nov., 1947, water injection was initiated to arrest further pressure decline. When discovered, the D, sand was a saturated reservoir with a gas cap /oil zone volume ratio m estimated volu-metrically at 0.0731, an average permeability of 500 md, a porosity value of 25 per cent, and an oil viscosity at reservoir conditions of 0.3 cp. The volumetrically determined stock-tank oil initially in place was 23.1 million bbl. The volumetrically weighted physical data and production data available until Nov., 1953 are reported in Table 1. In Ref. 1, the effects on the straight-line plot of various values of ro/r for a constant ?to, or of various dimen-sionless times for a constant r8/r10 were theorized and were illustrated in Fig. 3A of that reference. In this field case, the previously theoretically predicted effects are established. Thus, the MBE calculations using Eq. 3c of Ref. 1 were performed for various r6/r10 and dimension-less time values. Spontaneous combustion fires involving high-sulfide-content ores are a relatively infrequent yet serious safety hazard in mining. They are also the cause of lengthy mine shutdowns because they typically occur in areas of a mine where abundant fuel material is present but which are inaccessible for fire fighting. This Bureau of Mines report describes research to design, fabricate, and test in the laboratory and field a system that warns of spontaneous combustion fires in metal mines. Overall performance of the detection system was found to be satisfactory, in that the system was capable of reliably detecting low levels of combustion products believed to indicate the preflaming stage of spontaneous combustion in metal mines. Installation of similar systems in mines with a high risk of spontaneous combustion is recommended. Principal operating problems and recommended corrective actions are also discussed.

A significant basemetal province is recognised in the southern part of the Bonaparte Basin, Western Australia. Epigenetic stratabound carbonate hosted Pb-Ag-Zn mineral- isation occurs in dolomites of Tournasian age within a marginal marine transgressive carbonate and fine grained clastic sequence, spatially overlying the lagoonal facies of a Late Devonian reef complex. The deposits comprise coarse grained sulphide mineralisation characterised by high Pb:Zn ratios (10:1) and high silver (50 g/t) content. They occur at shallow depth, are flat to moderately dipping, and form a discontinuous mineralised trend at the margin of the Sorby Platform, which flanks a Precambrian basement high. Host rocks are predominantly sedimentary breccias and dolomitised footwall carbonates associated with a significant local unconformity transgressed by a siltstone cap rock sequence. The deposits are structurally related to synsedimentary growth faults, local basement highs and tensional en-echelon breccia systems. Fluid inclusion studies have concluded that mineralisation was deposited from a low temperature (85¦C-115¦C) saline ore forming solution. Lead isotope work reveals a Precambrian genetic source of the lead. Locally remnant textures after sulphates are recognised within the host sequence together with common bitumen and oil shows. Reduction of sulphate to H2S was possibly facilitated by either bacteria. activity, or by residual hydrocarbons which acted as a reducing agent. An alternative source of H2S may have been afforded by the thermal degradation of hydrocarbons. A 'mixing' genetic model is proposed for the mineralisation, which conceives the expulsion of metal enriched basinal brines followed by their precipitation as sulphides after mixing with locally derived reduced sulphur solutions at relatively shallow depths in their structural/stratigraphic sites of ore deposition.

Coal's Dynamic Legacy The first session presented by Mr. Zumwalt emphasized Western coal development, the heritage of the industry and its growth in the West. The session began with a brief description of the geologic origin of coal followed by a short history quiz given the audience to stimulate their curiosity and involve them in the presentation. Slides and flip charts were used as visual aids and a demonstration of energy resources and uses was made by playing the famous Skyline jelly bean game. Coal Mining Today Today's coal mining practices were dealt with in the second session as Mr. Zumwalt appeared dressed in the garb of the modem day miner. He then led a discussion of coal production in the Western states, its uses and the different techniques used in extracting coal from both a surface and an underground mine. Current coal transportation and markets were also touched on. Our Exciting Future Recent coal growth in the marketplace and new uses of coal products to the year 2000 were dealt with in the final session. Mr. Zumwalt covered things that currently impede the expanded use of coal and things that can negatively or positively affect the future use of coal. In each of the three sessions, Mr: Zumwalt was ably assisted by Mrs. Janet Gwilliam, his secretary at Utah Fuel Company.

The Bureau of Mines is conducting a series of investigations with the common aim of minimizing the losses that occur in the mining and treatment of mineral substances. The results of the investi- gations are being published in reports of the bureau. This report treats of a method of preventing some of the waste of the natural gas incidental to oil mining. This method, the condensation of gasoline from natural gas, offers to the oil operator and others a profitable means of utilizing some of the oil-well gas now being wasted. The most desired constituent of crude oil is obtained, the production of oil is not hindered, and the gas, after the extraction of gasoline, can be returned to the leased area to drive pumps or into pipe lines for uses to which natural gas is ordinarily put, usually with its fuel value lessened only in slight degree. Publications already issued briefly discuss the subject. In this report the work is treated in greater detail, and the results of many additional tests are shown.

The conditions under which barium carbonate can be used to remove sulfates from drilling muds are limited The amount of sulfate remaining in solution in the system after treatment with barium carbonate is shown to be a function of the concentration of the carbonate and barium ions and the concentration of other electrolytes. Barium hydroxide may advantageously replace barium carbonate when the contamination is not entirely due to anhydrite (calcium in the system is then stoichiometrically less than sulfate) or when the carbonate concentration is high. The effect of substances such as quebracho, phosphates, and chromates, which form complexes or precipitates with barium, is discussed. INTRODUCTION As the complexity of the operations in drilling for oil has increased, more attention has of necessity been directed to the problems pertaining to the maintenance of good drilling mud properties. As a result, chemical treatment of muds has become an important factor in recent years. Some of these treatments have been designed to eliminate the deleterious effects of contaminants in aqueous mud systems by precipitation or other means. The most common of substances encountered during drilling include sodium chloride, cement, and calcium sulfate while various other contaminants: usually in small amounts, may be introduced from the water, clays, and other materials used in preparation of the mud. In certain cases, for example where continued salt-water flow is encountered or massive anhydrite is drilled, special muds may be used so that the physical properties of the mud will remain satisfactory for drilling. In other cases, it is desirable to remove the contaminants so that soluble electrolytes in the system are maintained at low values. For sulfate contamination, the conlmon practice in the field is to add barium carbonate to precipitate the sulfate as barium sulfate Ordinarily such a procedure gives satisfactory results. There have been important instances, however, where addition of barium carbonate was not effective in removal of soluble sulfates from drilling muds. and it is to these cases that the present paper is directed. While it is generally known that barium carbonate is not always effective in removing soluble sulfates from drilling muds, certain inconsistencies appear in the literature as to the limitations of its use, and little explanation for the limitations are given. Varnell and Kimbrel state that "the treatment (with barium carbonate for removal of sulfate) is simple and consists in maintaining a pH of 9 with caustic soda and quebracho." They caution that concentrations of quebracho greater than 1 lb./bbl. may inhibit the reaction. In another publication', a pH of 10.5 is considered "the maximum desirable," and the indication is that as much as 2.5 lb. quebracho per barrel may be present in the particular mud under discussion. Lancaster and Mitchell5 state that appreciable amounts of phosphates in the mud will inhibit the reaction with barium carbonate and that the phosphate treatment should be discontinued at least 24 hours before addition of the carbonate. Experimental work was initiated to ascertain the factors involved in using barium carbonate for the removal of sulfate contamination in drilling muds. While the experimental data herein reported are limited, they focus attention on the pertinent factors which must be considered for successful treatment. These factors are discussed from a practical and a theoretical view, the latter being supported by equilibrium data found in the literature. Further, it will be appreciated that the factors involved in this specific study will be closely analogous to those in certain of the other chemical treatments which involve a precipitation of the soluble contaminant. A thorough comprehension of these factors should result in a more fruitful application of this type of chemical reaction to the treatment of drilling muds. EXPERIMENTAL A. Reagents Two muds were used during this investigation. For one series of tests, bentonite suspensions were prepared by dilution of a stock suspension containing 8 per cent by weight of bentonite (Aquagel). For another series, a 6.4 per cent ben-tonitic mud weighted to 9.7 lb./gal. with barium sulfate (Mag-cobar) was used. Distilled water was used in all preparations. The quebracho (72% tannin extract) was obtained from the Thompson-Hayward Co. of Tulsa and contained 11.4 per cent moisture (105 C.). All other materials were reagent grade, and concentrations were corrected for water of crystallization, if any. All concentrations are expressed in pounds per barrel (42 gallons). B. Technique The systems — either mud or water — were contaminated with either sodium or calcium sulfate after treatment with the desired amounts of sodium hydroxide and quebracbo. IN the last 15 years industrial use of ground water has more than doubled, and in 1951 amounted to 5 billion gallons per day. A similar sharp increase in the utilization of ground water for irrigation and public-water supply occurred in the same period. In many areas rapid increase in withdrawal from wells has taken place almost entirely unhampered by regulatory control and with little or no integration of effort. As might be expected, the chief interest in many regions has been maximum production rather than sustained perennial yield. As a result, widespread depletion of underground reservoirs and deterioration of the quality of the water stored in them has taken place in many areas, even though total pumpage in the United States is far below ultimate potential. Of even more concern is the fact that excessive withdrawal has drawn salt water into the reservoirs beneath many heavily populated centers along the Atlantic, Gulf, and Pacific coasts, causing costly abandonment of pumping plants.1

The high temperature erosion of Thermal Barrier Coatings (TBCs) is one of the main factors that define the lifespan in gas turbine components as it is considered the second source of failure of hot path components in power and propulsion turbine operation. The worn Top Coat (TC) surface in components such as first stage turbine blades affects the turbine efficiency due to energy losses and the increment in heat transfer to substrate. The first part of this work consists in describing a HTE test facility developed to emulate the damage conditions found in a number of components of gas turbines; in this testing machine, the samples were exposed to combustion gases moving at velocities close to 1.5 Mach and temperatures of 1100°C. The second part consists in the characterization of liners and first stage turbine blades of a GE7FA gas turbine used for power generation. The last part deal whit correlation of the features of TC’s worn surfaces with the erosion conditions and the dominant degradation mechanisms between test samples and turbine components were compared.

This paper describes the development of a novel selective flocculation technique for recovering phosphate values from ores containing silicate or carbonate gangue minerals. Data from initial flocculation response and reagent adsorption studies on component mineral suspensions and synthetic mixtures were used to assess the influence of various process parameters (e.g., reagent dosages, particle size, solids concentration, and conditioning regimes) on single-stage selective flocculation tests involving natural silicate and carbonate ores. In these tests a high degree of selectivity was achieved using low dosages of a low-molecular-weight cationic dispersant and a mid-range molecular weight cationic flocculant. Testwork was then extended to the evaluation of several floc recovery systems (sedimentation, hydrocyclones, and floc flotation) in a multi-stage process involving redispersion and reflocculation. Results from these tests clearly demonstrated the feasibility of producing marketable phosphate concentrates from both ore types.

Many years ago the late Sir Frederick Bramwell, a distinguished engineer, formerly in charge of the metallurgical and gun-making department of the Woolwich Arsenal, England, determined to break up a large number of cast-iron mortars of an obsolete type that had been in stock for years. Coal is a complex mixture of organic and mineral constituents and is the most abundant resource of fossil energy in the world. In recent years, significant research into dry coal beneficiation has gained much attention, primarily due to the need to improve grades and reduce the environmental contaminants in coal without the use of water, and to achieve this in as cost-effective manner as possible, relative to wet beneficiation processes. This paper seeks to review the application of various electrostatic separators with their process principles, to draw comparisons between different dry beneficiation techniques with specific emphasis on the tribo-electrostatic separation method, and finally to report the results of tribo electrostatic separation conducted on various South African coals. Previous research conducted on Indian, European and American coals has indicated that this technique is likely to lead to significant economic benefit through the reduction of ash content, NOx and more specifically Sox by separating out the liberated Fe-S-bearing minerals prior to utilization. The removal of the latter suite of minerals is also likely to significantly reduce or eliminate the emissions of associated trace elements, including mercury and arsenic. The research results reported in this paper indicate that the rotary tribo-electrostatic process has the potential for significant upgrading of high ash pulverized South African coal. The impact of various operational parameters was investigated and key factors established for the optimum recovery of low ash and low sulphur fine coal.

The Broken Hill proprietary company Limited grate kiln pellet plant (1) located at Whyalla in South Australia commenced production on May 13, 1968. During commissioning, about 25,000 long tons of fluxed pellets were produced. Plant performance was satisfactory and acceptable under the plant guarantee. For production reasons, it was necessary to curtail the fluxed pellet run and revert to the production of acid pellets. In 1970, some 250,000 long tons of fluxed pellets were produced under varying operating conditions to determine the requirements for optimum quality pellets at acceptable production rates. In excess of 180,000 long tons of these fluxed pellets were exported to Japan. Problems experienced in production of the fluxed pellets are detailed, and the quality of the fluxed pellets compared to that of normal acid pellets produced at Whyalla. Brief Plant Details Run of mine ore treated was predominantly soft and friable and contained an average of 66 per cent Fe, 1.7 per cent Si02 and 1.8 per cent Al203. The main iron mineral in the ore was hematite with some martite also present. Plant feed was ground dry in ball mills 11 ft in diameter by 29 ft long to a Blaine surface area of 1600 sq.cm/g and the ground ore was wetted in a pug mill. Balling was carried out in balling drums 10 ft in diameter by 32 ft long. Induration equipment included an eighteen windbox grate 12 ft 2 in. wide by 164 ft 1 in. long, a rotary kiln 18 ft 6 in. diameter by 118 ft 8 in. long and an annular cooler 50 ft mean diameter by 7 it wide.
