Vibrations from thirty-seven blasts were monitored using three seismographs. Data analysis showed that square root, cube root, and site-specific scaling predicted ground motion with equal reliability. Imprecise prediction is caused by geologic and blast variability, particularly inaccurate delay times. Vibrations at some mines were consistently lower or higher than vibrations reported in the U.S. Bureau of Mines studies. Regulations based on USBM data could then be too conservative or lenient. Predominant vibration frequencies were generally less than 50 Hz, but several blasts had significant energy up to 125 Hz. In some cases energy was concentrated at frequencies corresponding to delay intervals.

It is known that the backfilling confinement increases the pillar strength and also reduces the rib lateral displacement. With backfilling, it is possible to increase the room-and-pillar mining recovery. This paper aims to study the behavior of coal pillars confinement using rock fill as backfilling material. Laboratory tests were carried out to determine the behavior of backfilling materials. Constitutive models were developed for the tested backfilling materials. Numerical simulations for the effect of backfilling materials on the ground stability in room-and-pillar coal mine entry were performed. The backfill method is a good strategy to (i) improve the ground stability in room-and-pillar coal mines for long term, especially for weak coal seams, (ii) increase the coal mining recovery and (iii) reduce the quantity of waste material on waste piles at the surface.

The first diesel-powered Scooptram has now been in service for 21/2 yr at the I-C mine of Martin County Coal Corp. It has become the workhorse of the operation, being used around the clock many days. The fleet of nine 20-ton capacity Teletrams used behind three Jeffrey Heliminers now have more than 1 1/2-yr experience in the Coalburg mine. They have been exposed to some difficult conditions which, include steep grades, water, mud, and rutted roadways. These units have proven to he both rugged and powerful. The safety components and shutdown systems make these haulage units very safe for underground coal mines. A clean-burning engine, a satisfactory exhaust conditioning system, and good ventilation are the keys to maintaining a safe and healthful atmosphere for the underground operators and other employees.

[Methods of distilling topped crude oils and distillates under vacuum, accompanied by good fractionation, have taken a place of major importance in the refining industry. In the refining of petroleum products it is generally desirable to produce a distillate of good quality, and this objective is attained by fractionation of a high degree. The laboratory and commercial practice have proved chat by varying the amount of fractionation the quality of the distillate car be changed, and refiners are cognizant of the advantages of good fractionation. Distillation-under high vacuum, however, is a relatively new practice in petroleum refining, and only during the last few years has there boon an indication that that this method ray become a general practice in the industry. Vacuum distillation offers many advantages over older methods of distilling petroleum products. Vacuum combined with steam distillation, for example, is replacing straight-stream distillation because the quality of the products of vacuum and, steam distillation surpasses that of those produced by straight-steam distillation. Although the injection of varying amounts of steam in a vacuum unit is common practice, the amount of steam used is becoming less as the vacuum within the unit is increased. The spatial coincidence of the seven anomalies is obvious, even though the self-potential is offset northward. Because the ratio, as an indicator of conductivity, is a relative estimate at best, concise interpretation is limited in almost every instance to the location of a conductor or conductor axis. When related to the initial phase of an exploration program, magnitudes and ratios similar to those obtained from any one of the methods described, would be sufficiently attractive to warrant further investigation. The compilation shown is an empirical comparison of actual field results and no emphasis has intentionally been placed on the relative merits of one method in respect to another. Too many additional factors, i.e., size, depth and conductivity of overburden, etc., that cannot unequivocally be answered, enter into such a comparison before a relative evaluation can be made.

Approximately 45% of U.S. coal is produced from underground mining. The use of diesel engines to power under- ground mining equipment has steadily increased over the past four decades in an effort to improve mine safety and productivity. Several advantages realized with the use of diesel-powered mining equipment in underground coal mines are listed in Table I. The primary disadvantage of using diesel equipment in underground coal mines is that diesel exhaust emissions can contaminate mine ventilation air. The major constituents of diesel exhaust are gaseous emissions (which include carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, oxides of nitrogen, sulfur oxides and unburned hydrocarbons) and diesel particulate matter (DPM). The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) has incorporated threshold limit values for all gaseous components of diesel exhaust into their regulations. These have been established by the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists.

Production of oxygen on the moon can be achieved by reduction of lunar soil. One such reduction technology, hydrogen reduction, favours a high proportion of ilmenite in the feedstock. Ilmenite is present in lunar soil as a minor mineral phase, but it can be upgraded using electrostatic separation. This study presents the results of a preliminary investigation into the operating parameters and sensitivities of a free-fall electrostatic mineral separator for lunar applications. Samples of ballotini and ilmenite as well as simple binary mixtures of the two were tribocharged on copper and passed through a uniform electrostatic field. The field is varied to change the electrostatic force acting on the particles. The proportion of material reporting to the positive electrode collectors, negative electrode collectors or the central collector was measured to determine the separation performance. The data confirmed that the charge transferred from the tribocharger to each species is in agreement with the triboelectric series; ballotini was found to charge positively on copper and ilmenite negatively. Particle-particle contacts were dominant, however, resulting in a somewhat symmetrical particle distribution in the collectors. These findings indicate that the copper tribocharger design requires optimisation in order to substantially increase particle-wall contacts. Four binary mixtures with feed grades of ilmenite ranging from 5% to 20% were prepared and tested. This study found that a higher ilmenite head grade resulted in a higher concentrate grade (26.3% from a head grade of 20%) with low recovery (3.4%). In contrast, the lower feed grade resulted in a low concentrate grade but higher recovery. The mass yield of ilmenite was 1.4 times greater for the highest-grade feed than for the lowest. A subsequent study into the reprocessing of middling fraction found a nearly constant relationship between cumulative grade and recovery. Much has been said about sampling and operating placer deposits but many are still inclined to jump at a property without giving much, if any, consideration to proper sampling. This statement does not apply to experienced mining engineers but I am hoping that readers will tear out this article and pass it along where it will do the most good and thus help to preserve the reputation of legitimate mining. It would appear that some people have an ability to sink test pits in high-grade gravel that is positively uncanny. The Ore Reserve/Exploration System implemented at Mount Isa for M.I.M. Holdings Limited is a comprehensive computer system designed to process assay, geological, structural and survey data input via special purpose logging sheets from daily activities at Isa Mine, Hilton Mine and various Carpentaria Exploration Company prospects. The system performs two basic functions; (1) data acquisition, validation and file maintenance to prepare the data for retrieval, and (2) generation of routine and optional reports. The types of reports available range from masterfile detail printouts and retrieval of data by key items to survey computations, structural analyses, cutoff calculations, statistical analyses and ore reserve calculations by the polygonal, inverse square or moving average techniques. The use of various optional reports available through the system is illustrated by several examples, and planned future development is discussed.

"Testing was conducted to determine the ability of foam to maintain roof coverage in a simulated longwall mining environment. Approximately 27% of the respirable coal mine dust can be attributed to longwall shield movement. Developing controls for this dust source has been difficult. The application of foam is a possible dust control method for this source. Laboratory testing of two foam agents was conducted to determine their ability of foam to adhere to a simulated longwall face roof surface. Two different foam generation methods were used; compressed air (CA) and blower air (BA). Using a new imaging technology, image processing and analysis utilizing ImageJ software produced quantifiable results of foam roof coverage. For CA foam in 3.3 m/s (3.3 m/s (650 fpm)) ventilation at 3 minutes after application, 98% of agent A was intact, while 95% of agent B was intact on the roof. At 30 minutes after application 94% of agent A was intact while only 20% of agent B remained. For BA in 3.3 m/s (3.3 m/s (650 fpm)) ventilation, the results were dependent upon nozzle type. Three different nozzles were tested. At 30 minutes after application 74-92% of foam agent A remained, while 3-50% of foam agent B remained. CA foam seems to remain intact for longer durations and is easier to apply than BA foam. However, more water drained from the foam when using CA foam which demonstrates that BA foam retains more water at the roof surface. Agent A seemed to be the better performer as far as roof application is concerned. This testing demonstrates that roof application of foam is feasible and is able withstand a typical face ventilation velocity, establishing this technique’s potential for longwall shield dust control. INTRODUCTION NIOSH personnel have visited many longwall operations at various geographical locations in the U.S., conducting benchmark surveys to characterize current operating practices and dust control measures in use. Sources of respirable dust generated from the longwall face have been identified as: intake (10%), stage loader (20%), shields (27%), and shearer (43%) [1]. Dust generated from the shearer, armored face conveyor, and the stage loader can mainly be controlled by water sprays and increases in ventilation air quantities, however, research has demonstrated limited effective controls for dusts generated by shield movements [2]. One possible approach to mitigating shield dust generation is to apply a layer of water or foam to the shield-roof interface. Once this interface is blanketed with foam or water, dust will be less likely to become airborne and contaminate the airways over the personnel walkways. Though water is an abundant and common dust control measure, roof applications have limited success because water is unable to remain in-place in adequate quantities for the necessary duration between application and shield advance. Past and current testing of foam for material properties has shown that it has longer applicability times, ranging from 10 to 60 minutes [3] and has shown better performance for dust control, ranging from 19-96% improved efficiency over water [4, 5, 6, 7, 8]. The majority of this foam dust control research has focused on dust control efficiency at the longwall shearer or continuous miner cutting drum."

Since explosives are the source of all energy used for rock blast fragmentation and heave, multidimensional effects in the detonation driving zone become essential to better describe the detonation process. In order to use the explosive as an energy source-information for more realist blasting performance simulations, a simple and effective modelling strategy is desirable. Facing this challenge, an engineering approach to two-dimensional unconfined non-ideal detonation is proposed. Based on the elliptical construction of the shock locus, the model combines the axial cylindrical stick Q1D solution with some additional limiting conditions to determine the sonic edge of the charge. For a given set of rate law parameters and velocity of detonation, a complete axial solution is firstly computed through the Q1D model. From this solution, a vital relationship between the axial shock curvature with the shock shape parameters can be stablished. Once this relationship is found, the problem simply reduces in finding the shock shape parameters subject to the sonic edge condition. As a result of this calculation, the corresponding charge diameter can be found. Consequently, the proposed model can map the diametereffect curve by relating the unconfined velocity of detonation with its corresponding diameter. Finally, because of its low computation cost, the proposed engineering approach can be also used for characterizing the rate law parameters by fitting to data from unconfined detonation experiments

Due to the influence of economic development on the demand growth of coal resources, many mines in China have gradually entered deep mining. When the roof of deep coal seam is hard rock, it is easy to cause strong ground pressure with the advance of the working face, which seriously threatens the safety of coal mining. Taking 31,104 working face of a mine as the engineering background, this paper studies and compares the deformation characteristics and stress transfer evolution law before and after the presplitting of the hard roof through the combination of physical similarity simulation, numerical calculation, and field measurement, based on the analysis of the interaction relationship between the breaking and collapse of the composite hard roof, and verifies the treatment effect of hydraulic presplitting through field measurement. The results show that: (1) In the early stage of mining under the composite hard roof, the lower roof is mainly subjected to tensile failure, the voussoir beam structure formed is relatively unstable, and the stope is prone to impact. When the mining distance of the working face is large, the breaking rotation of the upper hard roof voussoir beam causes pressure damage to the lower hard roof, causing the lower hard roof voussoir beam structure to slide and lose stability, resulting in strong ground pressure in the working face. (2) After presplitting of composite hard rock stratum, in the early stage of mining, the range and degree of rock stratum damaged by presplitting are small except for the hard rock stratum itself, and the presplitting effect is not significant. When mining to the first square position, the roof is damaged in advance by presplitting, the overall plastic damage range increases, the damage form area increases, and the damage degree deepens. The vertical displacement of the composite hard roof increases rapidly, and the presplitting effect is remarkable. (3) The evolution characteristics of roof principal stress transfer show that under the dual effects of mining and presplitting, the roof tensile stress area above the goaf is large, the rock failure horizon rises, and the roof failure height is high and the failure degree is deep. The stress concentration degree of the coal mass in front of the goaf is reduced, and the stress concentration range is transferred to the rock mass in front. With the advance of mining, the hard roof in front can break and caving in time, so as to avoid rock burst disaster caused by large suspended roof area. The field ground pressure monitoring shows that the average periodic weighting interval, weighting range, peak value before weighting, and peak value during weighting of the working face after presplitting decrease by 53.5%, 38.03%, 8.63%, and 5.96%, respectively, which effectively reduces the weighting intensity and ensures the safe and efficient mining of the working face.

Two tunnel tubes, each 6.6 km long, will be driven using the shield tunnelling method. The difficult ground conditions and a water pressure of up to 6.5 bar make great demands on the design. Successful management of mining operations depend on the accurate and reliable measurement of performance as a monitoring instrument in a feedback and control loop. However, when changes are being considered, the probable effect of the change on bottom line results requires different measuring techniques incorporating an in depth understanding which can identify hot spots in the operation which exhibit strong sensitivity to change. The CSIR's Division of Mining Technology has therefore been devoting a considerable effort to the establishment of techniques which enable changes to be analysed in terms of their impact on the two key parameters describing mine performance, i.e. profitability and safety. This paper describes these techniques, outlines their application to some example situations and discusses planned enhancements. The first section of the paper addresses the profitability model, and this is followed by a section considering the mine safety model.

RECENT experiments in reflected sunlight photography in mine shaft's' and. slopes in the McAlester, Oklahoma, coal-mining district have been so satisfactory as to indicate that such a method has definite scientific value. The entrances to abandoned deep shafts and slopes on Choctaw and Chickasaw Indian coal lands in Oklahoma are being filled or bulk-headed by the U. S. Geological Survey under Public Works Project F. P. 63-C&C. Inasmuch as these mines may be reopened at some future time when there is a demand for coal, H. I. Smith, Chief of the Mining Division, suggested that photographs of deep shafts would be of value. Such photographs would show timber details and the general condition of the walls. Photographic records of the exact status of shafts when filled will facilitate operations in reopening.

What is your assessment of the mining industry as we near the end of the 20th century? As it always has, the industry is continually changing. The recent rate of change has been hectic. Many mining-related commodities are selling at low prices. These include gold, silver, copper, coal and soda ash, to name a few. Lower prices place pres- sure on mining companies to increase efficiency through productivity, down- sizing or mergers. The short- term effect of this situation may adversely affect the individual SME member. But the long- term benefit is to build a stronger, more productive and internationally competitive mining industry. In addition, most of these metals and minerals have been historically cyclical in nature, and prices will rebound.
