It is a generally recognized fact that a steel quenched from the austenitic range and tempered to yield a structure composed of tempered martensite becomes increasingly more ductile with increasing tempering temperature. However, the conventional tensile test fails to yield any value that is sensitive to differences in behavior on tempering among the various low-alloy steels or among different heats of a particular steel. The notched impact bending test, on the other hand, has been recognized for a considerable length of time as capable of revealing differences in impact properties among various steels tempered to 'the same strength level (i.e., the same tensile strength in a conventional tensile test). However, this test is very complex and its significance has not been clarified up to the present time. Of its three characteristic features—the high speed, the notch, and the bending—the notch has been found by Davidenkov2 to be the most potent embrittling factor. Recent investigations on low-alloy steels have shown static notch-bar tensile tests to be more lucid and to evaluate the metal properties in much the same manner as impact tests. In an attempt to analyze the fundamental nature of this test, it was found possible to separate the effects of the two basic characteristics of the stress pattern introduced by the presence of a circumferential notch, the stress state and the high initial stress concentration at the notch bottom. The major conclusions drawn from these previous investigations were as follows: I. The magnitude of the triaxiality at fracture depends primarily on the initial notch depth. Its effect is a great reduction in the average ductility (contraction in area at fracture in the notched section) as compared with that observed in uniaxial tension. This triaxial stress state occurs at a point in the interior of the notch specimen. It determines the notch ductility if the notch is mild and/or the metal possesses a considerable ductility. On the contrary, brittle specimens probably fracture on the metal surface (at the notch bottom) at which point biaxial stress state is present. This biaxiality also considerably reduces the ductility of the metal. For small notch ductilities the notch strength and the notch ductility become very sensitive to embrittling factors. This is contrary to the behavior. of the ductility values derived from a conventional tensile test, which are comparatively insensitive.

The fine Ti oxide inclusions precipitated during solidification are favorable for intragranular ferrite nucleation. The oxygen content before solidification affects the composition and size of inclusions. The composition of precipitated inclusions in Mn-Ti alloyed steel was studied by means of thermodynamic calculation and experiment in this paper. The micro-segregation of Mn, Ti and O during solidification was considered in calculation and unidirectional solidification apparatus was employed in experiment to ensure that alloy elements diffused along solidification direction. The results showed that: inclusions are mainly Ti oxide when oxygen content is 10ppm; they are Ti oxide and Mn-Ti oxide when it is 20ppm; Mn-Ti oxide dominates when it is 30ppm. With the increase of oxygen content, the size of inclusions increases. The maximum oxides size is about 3µm from statistical results of experiment.

If a fire occurs outby an underground coal mine section, the immediate safe evacuation of miners from the working section should always take precedence. Unfortunately, in many cases, the dedicated escapeways (escape routes) for the evacuation of the miners become contaminated by the byproducts of fire from the adjacent entries. The purpose of this paper is to present the ventilation-control process that would keep the escapeway free from contaminants and, thus, available for travel. A few scenarios of mine fires in longwall development panels are analyzed and discussed. To perform these studies, a mine fire simulator (MFS) was used. This (MFS) provides a dynamic representation of the fire's progress (in real time) and gives a color-graphic visualization of the spread of oxygen, combustion products and temperature of the gases throughout the ventilation system. Also presented and discussed are ways in which the MFS can be used as a training and teaching tool for miners and, particularly, for ventilation and safety specialists.

A washing technique has been developed to form a spherical cavity in massive salt. The technique is, basically, a process of controlling the fluid motion in the cavity, the concentration distribution of brine, the rate of dissolution at the walls of the cavity, and the particular settings of the wash pipe, or pipes (inlet and outlet pipe) employed. For a particular arrangement of tubing and casing, fresh water enters from the casing annulus at a position above the bottom of the tubing, and the dissolved material leaves the cavity through the tubing near the bottom of the projected hole. The initial configuration of the cavity is cylindrical, representing the drilled hole situated at the axis of the projected cavity. As washing progresses the original hole is enlarged radially (any direction perpendicular to the axis of the hole). An inert fluid (generally a hydrocarbon, natural gas, or air) which serves as a blanket is injected through the annular space between the original hole and the casing. The controlled downward motion of this blanket maintains the upper edge of the brine region that is expanding on the surface of the projected sphere. A large spherical glass container and a radial model were used to investigate the flow patterns and the concentration distribution of brine occurring during the progress of solution of the salt. Aluminum flakes and dye were injected and flow patterns were observed and recorded on motion picture film. Based on the results of these model studies and other work carried out in this laboratory, the controlled washing technique was formulated. INTRODUCTION Underground cavities leached in salt beds and salt domes have been used extensively for storing hydrocarbons. Little attention has been focused on the shape of the cavities as long as large volumes were obtained and the cavities were structurally stable. The general process involves circulating fresh water and removing brine. Two distinctly different circulating systems can be employed, each of which yields characteristically different shapes. By far the most generally accepted method of washing storage caverns in salt domes is the direct circulation system. Water is introduced through the innermost pipe of a concentric pipe system, and brine is withdrawn through the annulus. In the reverse-circulation method, water enters through the annulus and is discharged through the smallesc tubing string. The size of the operation, and hence the size of tubing and casing used, depends on such factors as cavity volume, length of hole, availability of water, disposal of brine and power requirements. Underground caverns are from 100 to 1,000 ft or more in length, and when completed vary from 40 to 100 ft in diameter, providing storage of 100,000 bbl or more. The volumes of water required per volume of salt removed vary from 6 to 7 for the reverse circulation method to 10 to 11 for the direct circulation method. Up to 80,000 BWPD are often circulated. In the direct circulation method, because water enters near the bottom of the projected cavity, solution of salt is greatest at this point, particularly in view of the fact that when the washing is begun turbulent flow undoubtedly exists in the immediate vicinity of the discharge of the inlet water. As the diameter of the hole increases, flow rates also are increased, so perhaps the condition of fluid turbulence is maintained for some time. During the later stages of leaching, when capacity of equipment may be the limiting factor in maintaining flow rates, there may still exist some turbulence adjacent to the point of influx; however, for the most part laminar flow conditions prevail. There appears, therefore, rather good evidence to indicate that the state of fluid motion is responsible for the typically shaped cavity which results from such washing — namely a cylindrical form, generally somewhat larger at the bottom than at the top. The strtcture of body-centered Fe-Ni-C alloys (0 to 16.5 wt pct Ni) containing less than 0.015 wt pct C was investigated by measuring the carbon-diffusion peak at low frequencies with a torsion pendulurrr. By determining the Snoek damping in ferrite and in quenched alloys of identical composition, the effects of nickel content and heat treatment were separated, and the existence of a structure in which Snoek damping is greatly reduced was revealed in the quenched ternary alloys. The relative amount of this structure increases with increased nickel content and cooling rate. It is proposed that this structure may be highly imperfect or tetragonal. In Fe-Ni-C alloys containing only ferrite the addition of nickel (0 to 5.1 wt pet) decreases tke area of the carbon-diffusion peak and shifts its position to lower temperatures but broadens the peak only slightljl. The decrease in peak area with increasing nickel implies that short-range interactions with the nickel atoms prevent some of the carbon atoms from participating in the relaxation process. The shift in the peak position indicates a long-range effect of nickel on the movement of carbon atoms so that at 300°K the diffisivity of carbon in -ferrite is increased by about 35 pct by the addition of 5.1 tut pct Ni. The results are presented as distributions of relaxation strength 072 the activation energy under the assumption that the frequency factor is invariant. BODY-CENTERED iron-base solid solutions dissolve carbon interstitially in the octahedral sites. The occupation of an octahedral site produces a tetragonal distortion of the surrounding lattice. These sites fall into three sets according to the orientation of the tegragonal distortion associated with each and may be identified by their lattice coordinates as: type 1/2 0 0, type 0 1/2 0, type 0 0 1/2. At low carbon levels in cubic ferrite the carbon atoms are distributed at random1 among these sites. In high-carbon body-centered iron-base solid solutions, which are unstable with respect to several two-phase mixtures, a tetragonal structure occurs as the product of the diffusionless transformation of austenite. This transformation is commonly accompanied by appreciable microstrain and its product is called martensite. The tetragonality of martensite, a supersaturated solution of carbon in a iron, is maintained prior to decomposition even though local diffusion of carbon occurs as evidenced by carbide precipitation. The tetragonality is taken as evidence that one set of octahedral sites is preferentially occupied by carbon. (This preferential occupation is called ordering below.) Support for this view is presented by the absence of strain-induced carbon-atom diffusion in high-carbon solid solutions (martensite). Such diffusion occurs in ferrite and produces the 40°C internal-friction peak observed at 1 cps frequencies.' Thus, there appears to be qualitative evidence favoring the view that at sufficiently high carbon levels tetragonality arises spontaneously as a result of the ordering of the carbon atoms; however, no experimental evidence exists concerning an equilibrium between cubic and tetragonal body-centered solid solutions. Moreover, attempts to estimate the energy of ordering7-' predict a value too low to maintain the tetragonality observed at medium carbon levels, 0.3 to 0.6 wt pct C. In the present work an attempt using internal-friction measurements is made to establish the presence or absence of tetragonality in low-carbon body-centered solid solutions formed by quenching austenite. Fe-Ni alloys containing about 0.01 wt pct and 0 to 15 wt pct Ni were selected for the study. While the work was in progress Gilbert and Owen10 reported that the transformation which occurs in these alloys during quenching at rates up to 5000°C per sec is not martensitic but is more properly categorized as massive. Co-pyrolysis of biomass and coal was investigated as an effective way to reduce the greenhouse gas emission. The effects of poplar on the thermal behavior of fat coal were studied using thermogravimetric analyzer. The blended samples heated to characteristic temperature were subjected to attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) to characterize the macromolecular structure. The results indicated that the synergistic effects existed in co-pyrolysis process of blends since lower char yield than calculated values, and the synergistic effects presented positive and negative trend with the increase of temperature, respectively. The carbonyl/carboxyl C=O stretching vibration functional groups and aliphatic side chain from individual fuels were decomposed in advance during co-pyrolysis. Furthermore, the hydrocarbon-generating potential (A-factor) and thermal maturity(C-factor) of the mixtures showed nonadditivity performance.

This chapter discusses the evolution of high-speed shaft sinking in the South African goldfields. Whether we are talking of an additional shaft at an existing mine or the opening of a new mine, the increasing depth of the ore-bearing reef and the unremitting inflation of costs have provided the compelling incentive to shorten the time taken to sink a shaft and start earning revenue. The high costs of sinking a modern shaft system in South Africa are indicated by the recent example of a deep-level mine in the Orange Free State where the cost was nearly $22!42 million. This was for a single large shaft of 33 ft 6 in. diam (in all cases, shaft diameters refer to the finished diameter of the shaft, e.g., inside the concrete) and 7600 ft deep with a prestressed concrete brattice wall dividing the shaft into upcast and downcast compartments. Higher costs and the consequent demand for increased tonnages, deeper shafts with higher rock temperatures, which necessitate highly sophisticaled ventilation and refrigeration requirements, have all accentuated the importance of time in a shaft-sinking operation. Rectangular shafts with their simple design and comparatively reasonable sinking speeds remained popular for many years until greater mining depths combined with a host of the other allied problems inevitably led to changes in shaft design. Circular shafts appeared to offer many advantages, particularly when considering ventilation, strength, mechanization, and sinking through bad ground and heavily watered zones. However, these advantages were largely offset by the slow rate of advance necessitated by the need to stop sinking in order to line the shaft. The development of the curb ring which enabled lining to take place above the bottom of the shaft and the use of multideck stages allowing sinking and lining to be carried out concurrently resulted in a major break- through. Rectangular shafts, which are still popular elsewhere, have been superseded in South Africa by circular shafts which are almost without exception the only shafts sunk in our goldfields today.

"The Nor-Acme gold mine is near the shore of Snow lake, northern Manitoba, about 75 miles east of Flin Flon. The claims that form the nucleus of the present property were staked in 1927 by C. R. Parres, but it was not until 1941 that diamond drilling disclosed the potentialities of the deposit. In that year a large-scale drilling programme was begun under the direction of F. Ebbutt, of the Howe Sound Exploration and Development Company. Two orebodies were outlined containing about 5,000,000 tons of ore assaying $5.25 in gold per ton. In August, 1945, construction of the mining plant was begun.All information and interpretations contained in the following brief description of the deposit were obtained from surface mapping.GEOLOGYThe ore lies at the contact between a coarse, basic, pyroclastic rock, which is the hanging-wall, and grey, acidic lavas and sediments, which form the footwall. These rocks are cut by irregular basic intrusions that vary in composition from diorite to hornblendite, and by small acidic dykes . Tourmaline is locally common in the hanging-wall rock near the ore.The ore occurs in brecciated, silicified, and ·slightly carbonatized rock. Arsenopyrite is the main sulphide and the gold is associated with it. Pyrrhotite is locally abundant and minor pyrite, chalcopyrite, sphalerite, galena, and cubanite have been noted. Two orebodies are known, the Dick and the Toots. The Toots, which is much the smaller of the two, is about 1,000 feet west of the Dick."

For a theoretical description of power plants that derive their energy from the combustion of a fuel, it is necessary to solve, to an appropriate degree of precision, a hydrodynamic problem that requires for its solution a knowledge of the thermodynamic properties of the working fluid com-posed of the products of the combustion reaction. It is usually a good approximation to assume that the properties of the combustion gas are determined by the conditions of thermal equilibrium, and it is thus possible to employ the methods of Classical thermodynamics for their computation. The thermodynamic properties of fuel gases also are of considerable importance, as they form the basis for the design of appropriate means for their effective utilization. The specification of the operating conditions to produce a gas for use as an intermediate in a chemical process, such as the synthesis of liquid fuels, may be based upon a study of the variation of the composition of the synthesis gas with changes in the various process variables. Although there exists a large number of important scientific and technical applications of the data that can be obtained from the systematic determination of the thermodynamic properties of combustion gases, such application has been greatly handicapped by the extremely tedious and time-consuming computational methods required. The development of large-scale automatic computational equipment makes feasible the initiation of a systematic program for the determination of the thermodynamic properties of combustion gases and for the application of such data to specific problems of scientific and technical importance. As a part of its program of basic research in flame and combustion phenomena, the Explosives and Physical Sciences Division of the Bureau of Mines is engaged in such a program. The present communication is designed to introduce a series of reports presenting the results of this program.

World demand for phosphate rock has increased significantly in the past fifteen years. Prior to the early 1960's, most of the world production was obtained from Florida, North Africa, and Kola. As the 1960's arrived, new mines in North Florida and Eastern North Carolina, as well as expanded production in the Western United States, .increased domestic production. Many new mines overseas have also become significant. This includes countries such as Senegal, Togo, Israel, Spanish Sahara, and Jordan. Limited production, often as by-products, has been noted in South Africa, Brazil, and other countries. In recent years, and even recent months, we have learned of many new areas being considered as potential sources of phosphate rock. This includes Australia, Saudi Arabia, Mexico, Colombia, and Brazil. Many other developing countries have discoveries and are considering their new deposits, often with difficult beneficiation problems, as potential sources of phosphate. These factors all relate to expanded world, population and the demand for more fertilizer products to produce food. In this paper, four areas of the world with different types of phosphate deposits are briefly reviewed to contrast the ore beneficiation problems to Florida procedures--long considered the "standard" of the industry, at least for most of the United States' domestic production. Agrico has three large operating mines in Florida with total production capacity exceeding seven million tons per year. Here, pebble phosphate (+14 mesh material) is produced without the use of flotation, whereas all of the material finer than 14 mesh is subjected to flotation beneficiation to upgrade into high grade concentrates.

The "frac" method of well stimulation has been applied successfully to all producing formations in the Permian Basin area. During the five years since its development, many changes and improvements have been made in treating materials. procedures, and equipie11t. A number of fluid carrying agents, having different physica1 and chemical properties, have been developed to meet variorus well requirements. The current trend is toward larger gallonage treatments, employing higher injection rates. The use of "down-the-casing" techniques has greatly reduced high surface working pressures, attributable to friction losses resulting from injection throrugh tubing. Petrographic studies of various Permian Basin formations, coordinated with laboratory and well log data, have been found a valuable guide in planning frac treat111o1t.s. A knowledge of the extent (and orientation of naturally occurring fractures and planes of weakness in the formation, aid in predicting the ultimate drainage pattern resulting from the frac treatment. INTRODUCTION The South Permian Basin covers an area in Wcst Texas and New Mexico about onc-half the size of the state of Texas, This vast region has been called the "Permian Basin" for so long that the term will he used here. It includes an area south of the Matador Arch. approximately 250 miles wide and 300 miles long. Structural features of importance within the basin are the Northwest Shelf, Eastern Platform, Midland Basin, Central Basin Platform, and Delaware Basin. The principal producing formations include sand, limestone and dolo-mite, with lesser amounts of shale, anhydrite. chert. and various silicates. All of the producing formations in the Permian Basin have responded to some type of frac treatment. Essentially, a frac treatment may be defined as the injection, into a formation. of a fluid carrying agent containing a particulated solid (usually sand), for the purpose of increasing production. The application of this method of well stimulation to many differing Permian Basin reservoirs has necessitated numerous changes and improvements in carrying agents, solids, service equipment. well equipment. and treating techniques. CARRYING AGENTS A number of different types of fluid carrying agents have been developed since the introduction of the frac method of well stimulation. These agents have different physical and chemical properties, and in many cases the extent of production increase derived from the frac treatment depends on the choice of fluid carrier. Unfortunately, due to many different systems of nomenclature used in the oil field, these differences are not always recognized by the oil Operator. The LA Effluent Outfall tunnel is a 7-mile long, 18' internal diameter, secondary treated effluent discharge tunnel currently under construction by Dragados USA for the Los Angeles County Sanitation District No. 2 (LACSD). The purpose of this tunnel is to add redundancy and increased capacity for discharge of secondary treated effluent from the LACSD’s Joint Water Pollution Control Plant, located in Wilmington, California within Southern Los Angeles County. Current discharge from this facility flows through two existing tunnels of 8' and 12' horseshoe profile, constructed in 1937 and 1958, respectively. When the new tunnel is complete, it will add an additional capacity of 670MGD in peak wet weather flow conditions. Geology of the roughly 7 mile long tunnel was divided into six reaches by the contract documents. Tunnel Reaches (TR) 1 to 3, comprising 19,550' will be excavated in alluvial sands of the San Pedro and Lakewood formations, with cover ranging from 45 to 90 feet. In this reach the tunnel intersects the seismically active Palos Verdes fault Zone. TR 4 is a 1,600' transitional zone between alluvium and the rock formations of the Palos Verdes (PV) Hills, comprised mostly of Malaga Mudstone. TR’s 5 and 6 total 15,591', and are within the rock formations of the PV Hills with overburden ranging from 315' to 475'. The primary constituent of the PV Hills is Altamira

A geological and geophysical study was con-ducted at the area of Stylos, Hania in order to study the possible mechanisms of saltwater contamination. A new detailed geologic map in scale 1:5,000 was combined with the results of a time lapse geophysical survey using seismic and electrical methods. A fault system in the N-NE direction possibly favors the saltwater intrusion.

In coal flotation, particles of different components of the coal such as maceral groups and mineral matter and their associations have different hydrophobicities and therefore different flotation responses. By using a new coal grain analysis method for characterising individual grains, more detailed flotation performance analysis and modelling approaches have been developed. The method involves the use of microscopic imaging techniques to obtain estimates of size, compositional and density information on individual grains of fine coal. The density and composition partitioning of coal processed through different flotation systems provides an avenue to pinpoint the actual cause of poor process performance so that corrective action may be initiated. The information on grain size, density and composition is being used as input data to develop more detailed flotation process models to provide better predictions of process performance for both mechanical and column flotation devices. A number of approaches may be taken to flotation modelling such as the probability approach and the kinetic model approach or a combination of the two. In the work reported here, a simple probability approach has been taken, which will be further refined in due course. The use of grain data to map the responses of different types of coal grains through various fine coal cleaning processes provided a more advanced diagnostic capability for fine coal cleaning circuits. This enabled flotation performance curves analogous to partition curves for density separators to be produced for flotation devices.

Sub-level caving with bottom ore drawing has gained wide acceptance in rich, soft, low magnetic iron ores because it provides moderate ore dilution and ore losses. The main problem here is the high rock pressure exerted on sub-level drives situated in the sub-level sill pillars. To reduce this effect, the ore block is divided into panels. This paper illustraes the method of determining the maximum panel width providing low maintenance cost of sub-level drives.

Well pressure transient tests provide a means for directly obtaining information about formation pressure and reservoir flow capacity. Such tests have also been proposed for determining presence and location of faults or other reservoir closures and for measuring oil in place. For mathematical convenience, most theoretical studies have considered the reservoirs to be homogeneous. Definitive information is not yet available to show whether the actual presence of nonuniformities will make pressure transient behavior different from that of a uniform reservoir. The conclusions reached from actual transient tests are questionable, therefore, insofar as they rely on the original assumption of homogeneity. One type of nonuniformity commonly assumed to exist is that of stratification. In most reservoirs the strata are thought to be in vertical communication. Equations for the transient flow of a single-phase, compressible fluid in a one-well, bounded, circular reservoir have been solved for several situations involving crossflow between multiple strata of various thicknesses and permeabilities. The results show that except for the very early flow period, which usually is too short to be analyzed, the transient performance observed at the well is substantially identical with that of a homogeneous reservoir having the same dimensions and having the same steady-state flow capacity. Thus, stratification does not adversely affect interpretation of well transient tests. This conclusion holds for all commonly encountered combinations of reservoir thickness and external radius. Deviations are observed for unusually thick reservoirs whose outer radii are relatively small. The results of these studies also show that the presence and the amount of stratification cannot be simply diagnosed from reservoir pressure transient data when there is crossflow between strata. INTRODUCTION The last decade has brought wide acceptance of the transient well pressure test for determining reservoir parameters. Following the original work of Hurst and van Everdingen,1 the mathematical theory was thoroughly explored. Numerous authors have suggested how to determine static reservoir pressure, permeability-thickness product, original oil in place and reservoir limits for different reservoir geometry. The same mathematical techniques have been used to predict the transient performance of a reservoir over a long period of time. Most of the theoretical work has been for homogeneous, isotropic systems. Some results have also been presented for a homogeneous, anisotropic reservoir.2 Petroleum reservoirs are not homogeneous. The deposition process seems to favor creation of a stratified formation. This concept is sufficiently well accepted so that the most natural extension of the transient flow theory beyond the homogeneous case is to a stratified formation. Results for a stratified reservoir with no vertical communication between layers can be obtained from the results for a homogeneous reservoir. Lefkovitz, et a1,3 have given a thorough treatment of the two-layer case. Two recent papers4,5 have treated the case of a two-layered reservoir with vertical communication or crossflow, between layers. Russell and Prats4 find that, after a relatively short time, the two-layered reservoir with crossflow exhibits a simple exponential pressure decline. From this time forward, the behavior is not distinguishable from the behavior of a homogeneous reservoir having the same steady-state flow capacity. The results of Katz and Tek 5 are equivalent. Russell and Prats4 also speculate that a multi-layered reservoir with crossflow will behave as a homogeneous system after long enough production time "... providing the contrast in kh between layers is not too great". They also suggest that, at intermediate times, "... the relative positions of the layers with respect to each other will have a great influence on the production behavior and on the time at which the previously mentioned large-time approximation might be valid". This paper is a step in the direction of developing a computer model of the near source dispersal of suspended particulate matter (SPM) in planetary boundary layer (PBL). Since Surface Mine blasting is done during daytime, study of daytime dispersion in convective boundary layer (CBL) is relevant to the mining engineers. The scope of this paper covers dispersal after the blast in any type of PBL ie stable, convective and neutral but only under weak wind condition. Mathematical analysis of the dispersion of vertical dust column has been carried out during weak wind conditions in a tropical meteorological environment. It is noted that dust concentration reaches its maximum value some distance away from the point of blast, immediately after the blast (t*=1) and thereafter rapidly decreases. After a short interval from the time of blast at t*=11 the dust concentration shows linear decrease in concentration with distance. Dust concentration also rapidly drops during the interval t*=1 to t*=11, thereafter, rate of drop is nearly the same at any distance from the point of blast.

The essential features of an image analysis system for the measurement of mineral liberation are described. Good procedures for image acquisition and image processing prior to image analysis are defined. The basic stereological methods for the measurement of volume fraction, surface area per unit volume, particle size distribution and liberation spectra are given. The appropriate methods for fractal correction when measuring perimeters of irregular features and for frame correction when measuring linear intercepts are developed. Practically useful and accurate procedures for the stereological correction of particle size and liberation distribution methods are given.

Notches are preferential sites for fatigue and for environmentally assisted cracking (EAC) initiation. Semi-empirical notch sensitivity factors have been used for a long time to quantify notch effects on fatigue design. Recently, this concept has been mechanically modeled using techniques which properly consider the notch tip stress gradient influence on the fatigue behavior of mechanically short cracks. This model properly calculates such values from the basic fatigue resistances of the material, its fatigue limit and crack growth threshold, considering the characteristics of the notch geometry and of the loading, without the need for any adjustable parameter. Such criteria to estimate notch sensitivity and tolerable short cracks on fatigue have been extended to EAC conditions and verified by proper tests. In its simplest version, the criterion for the maximum tolerable stress under EAC conditions uses the resistances to crack initiation and to large crack propagation and the characteristic short crack size under EAC, considering the crack size and stress intensity factor. Moreover, the tolerance to short cracks under fatigue and under EAC conditions can be unified in an extended Kitagawa-Takahashi diagram, a new and potentially very useful tool for material selection tasks.

Typical electric appliances were dismantled into component pieces to study the recyclability of these discarded goods. Types and weight ratios of these component materials were investigated and characterized. The results showed that if they are dismantled properly, these goods could be classified into several groups of similar materials and/or structures, namely those consisting of single materials, metal-plastic combinations, metal-metal combinations and complex combinations of many different materials. By separating each combination into recyclable materials and isolating hazardous materials, it was found that the final waste for disposal could be reduced and the recycling efficiency could be improved markedly as compared to the conventional shredding method. The metal-metal combinations account for 60% by weight of the total metal contents in electric appliances, and therefore, it becomes important to segregate these metals. For the complex combinations, a process consisting of pyrolytic decomposition of plastic contaminants followed by smelting of the residue is proposed. It is anticipated that nearly zero-emission recycling of electric appliances will be achieved by applying this treatment process.
