Simplified equipment and techniques have been developed to permit cementing a completion interval in a well and recompleting higher, lower, or at the same depth in such a manner as to: 1. Eliminate the need for a conventional drilling or workover rig. 2. Eliminate mud and other cement contaminants which have long interferred with ideal cementing. 3. Eliminate need for drilling out cement. 4. Provide a more satisfactory recompletion. 5. Provide a more economical recompletion. This technique involves the use of a small-diameter, lightweight, tubing extension which is run on a wireline and set in a landing nipple previously installed in the tubing string. Low squeeze pressure and small cement volumes, with their attendant cost reduction, are successfully used when wells are completed and reworked with salt water or other penetrating fluids. Relatively low-water-loss cement is an integral component of the technique which provides that excess cement be reverse-circulated from the well to leave the casing void of cement when recompleting lower or in the same interval. Substantial cost reductions are realized by using the simplified or low-pressure cementing technique, and the ratio of successful squeeze-cement operations has been increased. Squeeze-cementing or recementing is the act of filling a channel behind casing or filling holes purposely placed in the casing. To obtain a satisfactory squeeze-cement job, it is necessary only to fill the channel or the perforation holes with a cement filter cake and to allow it to harden in that position. In the past, the presence of mud in a well has been considered the chief deterrent to obtaining a good cement bond and satisfactory cement job; however, late developments in squeeze-cementing have made it possible to eliminate cement contamination or interference. Since it is possible to form a cement filter cake with a small pressure differential, squeeze-cementing with high pressures may not be necessary in most cases. The amount of cement needed to fill the annulus about the casing and even to fill part of the casing, if necessary, is generally small in quantity. Use of low squeeze-cementing pressures and small quantities of cement provides the following advantages: 1. Longer effective life of well tubing, casing, and other equipment; and less chance of costly equipment failure due to excessive pressure. 2. Monetary savings effected by elimination of retainers and specal squeeze-cementing tools. 3. Monetary savings effected by use of small quantities of cement and fewer squeeze-cementing operations. 4. Future surface squeeze-cementing equipment may be smaller and more economical to operate and maintain.

INTRODUCTION Trade financing is a particularly important component of short-term financing for a minerals company since errors, extra costs, or payment delays/defaults can easily wipe out the profit margin on a particular shipment or can cause problems when arranging purchases of e.g. reagents. It is required to make any minerals operation function and does not have to be cross-border to require proper management. Sources of working capital are as follows: 1. Extended credit terms from suppliers 2. Inventory loans from banks, finance companies 3. Accounts receivable financing or factoring 4. Credit lines or overdraft facilities from banks. TRADE CREDITS These are provided under the familiar terms "net 10 days" or payment due by the "10th day of the following month." Thirty days for payment is usual but longer periods can be negotiated with regular suppliers. Shipment may be made on open account with specified periods for settlement. In the mining industry, a custom smelter gains trade credit by paying for concentrates three months after the month of shipment. INVENTORY LOANS Various forms of inventory finance are provided via "floor-plan" or warehouse financing. A set percentage, usually 60%-80%, of a good-quality, readily saleable inventory item (e.g. bullion, concentrates, ingots) will be provided by a bank or finance company which will usually have security over these products and has a right to inspect the goods from time to time. Legal security will he achieved by warehouse receipts, floating liens, chattel mortgages, trust receipts, or through collateral management service companies. The latter certify control over stock or distribution outlets and often carry insurance against fraud. Costs range around 1.5% - 2.0% p.a. or more plus some fees to cover out-of-pockets or other costs. ACCOUNTS RECEIVABLES Accounts receivable financing is based on the company's generation of satisfactory receivables which are continuously assigned to a bank or finance company ("factoring"). Because of the risks in being able to collect receivables, such as payments to a smelter for its blister copper shipments to a refinery, this form of financing costs as much as 3% - 5% of the debt amount purchased plus an additional charge for processing paperwork. Receivables can be purchased with or without recourse and on a notification or non-notification basis to the client's customer to, respectively, pay the invoice directly to the bank or not. LETTERS OF CREDIT Letters of Credit ("L/C's") are a common feature of international trade finance whereby a bank, at the request of the buyer, issues a written undertaking to an exporter to pay a specified sum of money within a set time on presentation of previously specified documents. This undertaking means that the exporter is no longer relying on the credit standing and integrity of the foreign importer. A dispute about shipment does not otherwise affect the obligation to pay upon presentation of a "clean" set of documents. These documents include the hill of lading and other documentation, often on standard "form" bases. There are a number of conventions and techniques in L/C's such as irrevocable/revocable L/C's, time L/C's, confirmation/advising L/C's and transferable L/C's. These are tools to adjust for the varying risks that the importer will not pay. Other routes where one is comfortable with an importer include documentary sight hills (D/P hill), documentary term bills (D/A bill), and, of course, open account.

A novel process is described for the selective flotation of scheelite from low-grade (- 0.5% W03) tungsten ores having appreciable quantities of calcareous and siliceous gangue minerals. Specifically developed for the Tempiute, Nevada facility of Union Carbide, the process yields tungsten concentrates exceeding 15 percent W03 with at least 85 percent recovery. This condition was not achieved through conventional processes. This process consists of conditioning the ore pulp with judicious amounts of lime, followed by soda ash and sodium silicate as modifiers. The scheelite is then floated using a mixture of oleic and naphthenic acids as collector. Contrary to the common observation as to the deleterious effects of calcium in fatty acid flotation systems, lime addition is found to be beneficial in achieving satisfactory results. The process has also shown excellent results on a Brazilian scheelite ore.

The cyanidation of precious-metal ores is a complex chemical process. Numerous reactions occur, some of which cause an undesired consumption of alkali and of cyanide. A knowledge of these reactions, their products, and the factors that influence the rates at which they proceed should be of value in working out the most economical conditions for cyanidation; but at present, much of this knowledge is lacking. This paper is confined to a study of some of the fundamentals of cyanidation. At the start of such an investigation it is necessary to simplify the problem under consideration by eliminating as many variables as possible. The results are then, of course, not immediately applicable to practice, but it is hoped in further work to round out the information and thereby make it of more practical value. For convenience in presentation, the paper has been divided into two parts, one devoted to a study of the reaction between cyanide and gold or silver, the other to a consideration of the factors that determine the rate of dissolution. I. REACTIONS INVOLVED IN DISSOLUTION OF GOLD AND SILVER IN DILUTE CYANIDE SOLUTIONS Ever since the cyanide process for gold and silver extraction was introduced there has been discussion of the equation representing the reactions involved. In undertaking a detailed study of these factors, it was felt that the most logical first step was to determine, if possible, what reactions could theoretically take place when gold and sill-er are dissolved by dilute cyanide solutions. It is possible to determine whether or not a given reaction will theoretically take place by calculating the free energy of the reaction. This free-energy value for any given reaction is the algebraic sum of the free energies of formation of each of the reactants and products, and, if these values are known, the calculation is simple. (A chemical change always involves an energy change and the amount of energy change involved is the factor determining whether a given reaction will take place or how far it will go. It is the general belief that the coal deposits on Vancouver Island are extremely large, and easily available. Indeed, they are frequently described by prominent public men and by writers in the press as "illimitable" and "inexhaustible." It is well that the facts that have been established as a result of seventy years of surface prospecting, underground operations and extensive diamond-drilling in this coalfield should be disclosed. HISTORY The presence of coal on the coast of British Columbia was first made known by Dr. W. F. Tolmie in 183 5. This coal was brought to him by Indians from the north-east coast of Vancouver Island, probably from Suquash. In 1850 the existence of coal at Nanaimo was announced by Mr. ]. W. MacKay. Development was started in 1852, and coal was shipped before the close of 185 3. The first operations were carried on by the Hudson's Bay Company, who operated the mines until 1861, when they sold them to the Vancouver Coal Mining and Land Company. Practically all of the operations in the immediate vicinity of Nanaimo have been carried on by this Company and its successors. In 1869, Mr. Robert Dunsmuir discovered coal about five miles north-west of Nanaimo, at Wellington. The Welling-ton Colliery Company was organized, and began to produce coal from the Wellington mines in 1871, the coal being shipped from Departure bay. This colliery was a large producer for several years, but was finally closed in 1900.

The Yanacocha Operation is an open pit gold mining operation located in mountainous terrain in Northern Perú. Given constraints imposed by the topography and the permitted boundaries, the efficient use of space is a priority for the Operation. Gold extraction from some ore types involves leaching, and the construction of heap leach facilities (HLF). The construction of HLF over a waste rock facility (WRF) is an example of a design driven by the need to use space efficiently. Liner grades that promote controlled drainage of leach solution, and drainage infrastructure are essential in HLF design. With this in mind, accounting for settlements in the waste rock and the native soils that form the WRF foundation were particularly important for this application. The facility continues to function in accordance with the design. This concept permitted important cost savings, and provided useful HLF capacity for the Yanacocha Operation.

This paper presents details of a slope stabilization scheme built in late 2003 at a 16m-high railway embankment in southern Ontario, Canada. The owner, faced with continuing maintenance and safety issues arising from numerous nuisance slides, and residential neighbors in close proximity to the slope, sought new proposals to replace a previous recommendation to cut down all trees and undertake a deep soil nailing scheme. A non-reticulated micropile array with surface cap beam was proposed and built on the south side of the embankment with no tree removal required. A detailed FLAC analysis was completed, using multiple iterations to arrive at the eventual, optimized micropile depth and spacing. Analysis predicted an 18% increase in the factor of safety. Short term inclinometer monitoring and performance evaluations in the months since construction so far corroborate the prediction.

The Bureau of Mines has investigated the fundamentals of the flocculation process. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of various physico-chemical parameters such as shear rate, polymer dosage, and polymer concentration on floc growth and to determine the applicability of a model in predicting polymer flocculation behavior. A rapid in-line particle size analyzer was used to follow the progress of both the floc growth and the breakage as a function of time. A genetic algorithm (GA) was used to determine the unknown parameters in the model and to fit a curve to the experimental data. Results show that the model, using GA as a tool to determine the unknown parameters, reproduces the experimental data with only reasonable accuracy and was relatively insensitive to the parameters. Results of the flocculation study showed that increases in polymer dosage had greater effect on the time required to reach the maximum floc size than on the floc size itself. It was also determined that, given all the aforementioned parameters, the degree of slurry mixing during the flocculation process had the greatest bearing on the floc growth.

THE relationship between hardenability and weldability has been mentioned many times. The ease of making a hardness survey has led to its wide use as a criterion [ ] of weldability and with a given class or series of steels for which the ductility under weld heat-treatment is known the test is entirely suitable. However, in studying a new steel the hardness survey is of less value, since it is based on the assumption that there is a correlation between hardness and ductility. Several attempts have been made to derive indices for weldabilityl and hardenability from the chemical analysis. In most of these proposals the effects of the different elements were considered to be additive, but recently Grossmami2 proposed a novel method of calculating the hardenability of a steel from its chemical composition. In the [ ] method proposed, a steel is considered as having a base hardenability due to its carbon content and grain size, and this base hardenability is multiplied by a factor for each chemical element present, The final product is the hardenability. The purpose of the present study is to point out the possible relationship between hardenability and the effect of welding on hardness and ductility for a number of plain carbon and low-alloy steels. The composition of the 25 steels reported in this paper as determined by chemical analysis is given in Table I. To eliminate the effect of variations in finishing temperatures, the 1/2-in. plates were normalized after heating for one hour at 1650°F. in a controlled-atmosphere furnace.

Using bulk repumpable water gel explosives in underwater shooting results in even more benefits to the user than a "dryland" customer. It is nearly impossible to reshoot underwater, so a bad shot causes tremendous problems. The huge expense of operating drill boats, dredging buckets and clamshells makes shot loading, hookup and digging cycle times critically important.

Moore was born in Coventry, England. He matriculated at Bablake School and then atended Birmingham University, obtaining a B.Sc. Mining Engineering degree in 1953. Professor J .S.J. (J annie) van Deventer matriculated at Swelendam High School. He studied chemical engineering at the University of Stelenbosch, and obtained the degrees of Hons. B. Ing. in 1978 and Ph.D. (Ing.) in 1985. Professor M.D. Brayshaw received most of his education in England but obtained his Ph.D. (Eng.) at the University of Natal. 12.3-1. Reporting. NEED. It seems almost unnecessary to comment on the need for reporting research and development results and activities, and yet much of the difficulty and misunderstanding surrounding a Research and Development (R&D) group results from poor or nonexistent reporting. Certainly no evaluation can be made without reports of results or plans. It is as important to report accurately and fully for the department's own use as it is for external use. Research unreported might as well be considered research undone. This section will discuss, in part, the need for reporting, the general types of reports which may be generated to satisfy the need, and finally, the evaluation of a project as judged by various commonly used standards. PURPOSE. Some specific observations might be appropriate concerning the reporting of R&D results. The requirements and background of the group receiving the report must be considered. A particular report is usually directed towards the background of a particular group, such as ((technical," "operational," "financial," or "marketing." It is essential that the emphasis and coverage be geared to the training of people receiving the report. It should be obvious that the financial department will be less interested in the technical details of the process and more interested in the capital funds and tax implications involved in the project. Operating personnel will be greatly interested in the effects of a new method on mining plans, and so on. This does not mean that the reporting in any way should slight pertinent details, nor should a patronizing attitude be assumed by the writer. However, it is essential that the needs of the reader be recognized. For reports that might have large and varied distribution, it is often feasible to group, either as sections or appendixes, the special details and information of interest only to certain functions within the organization. Because conventional (physical) methods of ore dressing are not suitable for reducing the phosphorus contents of high-phosphorous manganese ores from Andhra Pradesh (AP) and the adjoining area in southern Orissa, India, the adoption of chemical methods becomes imperative. An attempt was therefore made to reduce the phosphorus content of partially beneficiated manganese ores from AP by roasting with sodium carbonate and then leaching with hot water. However, due to the higher phosphorus contents of the manganese ores from Nishikhal mines in southern Orissa, and because of their apparent resistance to dephosphorization by roasting with Na2CO3 alone, a mixture of Na2CO3 and NaCl was found to be necessary to reduce the phosphorus content to below 0.15%. Free-energy calculations at 700°C and above indicated that Na2CO3 (or Na2O as the active component) is a more active reagent than NaCl. Various process parameters, such as the temperature and time of roasting, the amount of sodium carbonate and the temperature and time of leaching, were studied to arrive at the optimum conditions for dephosphorization.

The development of an onboard contaminant diagnostic monitor to continuously measure contaminant level in a mining machine was advanced to a prototype stage in this contract. Several concepts were investigated and it was found that a static spool type sensor was the most reliable and accurate. Laboratory and field tests showed that an instrument based on this concept is capable of measuring contaminant levels and/or size distribution, depending on the configuration of the sensor. Moreover, this instrument can function on emulsions or homogeneous fluids. Current laboratory equipment can operate on homogeneous fluids only.

"Union Miniere Precious Metal's (UMPM's) Hoboken Business Unit has a long tradition in complex Pb-Cu metallurgy, focussing on the recovery of precious metals from various types of secondary and recyclable materials. Although the old flow sheet, based on a traditional sinter plant, blast furnace, and lead refinery process was a very complete flow-sheet with the capability of dealing with almost every impurity, the weaknesses became clear:1. old and costly technology,2. too many unit operations,3. too much internal recycling, and4. dependency on concentrates for the sintering process.To maintain the competitiveness of the Hoboken Business Unit, the project ""Smelter 2000"" was born. This project represents a breakthrough in metallurgical processes and technology. A modem smelting technology was chosen together with the development of a new process. A lead-copper process combining lead slag and blister copper production, carried out in an ISASMEL T vessel, was the key to simplifying the Hoboken flowsheet. ISASMEL T smelting technology was chosen for its flexibility towards feed characteristics and process parameters.The new smelter was commissioned at the end of 1997. Although there were a lot of problems due to the high degree of technical innovations in the process, the new smelter came to design capacity within 1 year after start-up. During this period, however, UMPM had, a very difficult time because of the extreme clear-cut nature of going from the old to the new flowsheet.After two and a half years of operation, the new flowsheet has proven to fit with the strategy of UMPM, focussing on treating secondary Pb-Cu materials and a broad range of recyclable feeds such as electronic scrap (E-scrap) and catalysts. Together with the new Precious Metals Plant, efficient logistics, recognised world class sampling practices and a customer-focussed commercial organisation, UMPM Hoboken can definitely be considered reborn."

The distributions of gold and associated elements in mineral grains from a pyritic gold ore were studied by optical microscopy, and by SEM and SIMS imagery. Products studied were a sulfide flotation concentrate, a calcined sulfide concentrate, a cyanide leached calcine, and a cyanide leached pressure oxidation residue. Individual pyrite grains are compositionally zoned and solid solution gold occurs in some, but not all zones. Most of the gold in calcined products is present as metallic coalesced grains that are smaller than 100 angstroms. Gold lost into cyanide leached residues from the calcines tends to be in “semi-dense” grains that cannot be distinguished from gold-free grains except by SIMS analysis. The gold in cyanide leached pressure oxidation residues occurs as solid solution gold in unoxidized pyrite remnants.

Cananea is located at an elevation of 5,200 ft in the north-central part of the state of Sonora, Mexico, about 135 miles northeast of Hermosillo, the state capital, and about 30 miles south of the United States border. A graded road runs to Cananea from the border town of Naco, near Bisbee, and a branch road turns east to Cananea at Imuris, a town 36 miles south of the border on the Nogales-Hermosillo highway. Railway service is provided by a spur from the Nogales-Naco branch of the Ferrocarril del Pacífico Railroad. Fuel for the power plant, smelter, and town (population approximately 20,000) is natural gas, supplied through a pipeline from the United States. The Compa[n]ía Minera de Cananea generates electric power for its own installations and also supplies both electricity and water to the town. HISTORY The earliest record of mining in Cananea dates back to 1760, when Jesuit fathers worked the Cobre Grande mine for silver in spite of resistance from hostile Indians. About 1800, several mines were worked on a relatively large scale by the House of Guea of Chihuahua. From then until about 1890 when William C. Greene of Fairbanks, Ariz., acquired control of a large group of properties, mining continued in a rather sporadic manner. The mineralized district is approximately 6 miles wide and 15 miles long, and the orebodies are associated with breccia pipes and granitic intrusive rock. In the early days, many small mines operated within the area on high-grade orebodies. Functional Description Figure 1 is a typical flowsheet for a system for solid fuel addition to filter cake. Solid fuel, coal, coal breeze, or charcoal, is fed from a,stockpile to a surge hopper. The solid fuel is metered into a grinding mill. The fuel is dried and ground in a grinding mill. The on-size particles are removed from the mill by air sweeping. The ground solid fuel is separated from the air stream by a cyclone and stored in a surge hopper. The ground solid fuel is then pneumatically conveyed to a small hopper in the balling area. The fuel is proportioned into the filter cake just prior to mixing. An efficient mixer is very important to have a successful operation. The exact flowsheet would depend on a number of factors including what fuel is used, how the fuel is received, and the cnaracteristics of the fuel as received. Availability of floor space in the plant may also affect the flowsheet. For example, drying air may be supplied from the pellet furnace if the grinding mill can be located near the grate, or the pneumatic conveying system and a surge hopper may be eliminated by placing the grinding mill adjacent .to the mixing area. Also, for a multiple line plant, a ball mill rather than a roller mill may be more suitable.

It is a generally recognized fact that a steel quenched from the austenitic range and tempered to yield a structure composed of tempered martensite becomes increasingly more ductile with increasing tempering temperature. However, the conventional tensile test fails to yield any value that is sensitive to differences in behavior on tempering among the various low-alloy steels or among different heats of a particular steel. The notched impact bending test, on the other hand, has been recognized for a considerable length of time as capable of revealing differences in impact properties among various steels tempered to 'the same strength level (i.e., the same tensile strength in a conventional tensile test). However, this test is very complex and its significance has not been clarified up to the present time. Of its three characteristic features—the high speed, the notch, and the bending—the notch has been found by Davidenkov2 to be the most potent embrittling factor. Recent investigations on low-alloy steels have shown static notch-bar tensile tests to be more lucid and to evaluate the metal properties in much the same manner as impact tests. In an attempt to analyze the fundamental nature of this test, it was found possible to separate the effects of the two basic characteristics of the stress pattern introduced by the presence of a circumferential notch, the stress state and the high initial stress concentration at the notch bottom. The major conclusions drawn from these previous investigations were as follows: I. The magnitude of the triaxiality at fracture depends primarily on the initial notch depth. Its effect is a great reduction in the average ductility (contraction in area at fracture in the notched section) as compared with that observed in uniaxial tension. This triaxial stress state occurs at a point in the interior of the notch specimen. It determines the notch ductility if the notch is mild and/or the metal possesses a considerable ductility. On the contrary, brittle specimens probably fracture on the metal surface (at the notch bottom) at which point biaxial stress state is present. This biaxiality also considerably reduces the ductility of the metal. For small notch ductilities the notch strength and the notch ductility become very sensitive to embrittling factors. This is contrary to the behavior. of the ductility values derived from a conventional tensile test, which are comparatively insensitive.
