Investigations by the Federal Bureau of Mines indicate that hafnium and zirconium compounds of acceptable purity can be extracted from Nigerian zircon concentrates. Chlorination and caustic soda fusion techniques were used to extract 85 to 95 percent of the valuable metals from the concentrate. The extracted hafnium and zirconium compounds were purified by recrystallization of the oxychlorides or by formation of complex salts during chlorination. The zirconium-hafnium product of the recrystallization method contained 15 parts per million of uranium, and the product of the salt-complex method contained less than 10 parts per million of uranium. The hafnium was separated from zirconium by solvent extraction methods. A zirconium product containing 0.3 percent hafnium and a hafnium product containing 4 percent zirconium were obtained. At the request of the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC), work was started to develop techniques for processing Nigerian zircon concentrates in commercial installations presently engaged in producing zirconium and hafnium metals from ores. The Nigerian zircon has a high hafnium content, but the presence of uranium and thorium is a problem not normally encountered in processing zircon concentrates.

Since 1969, a substantial number of geophysical methods have been applied in the search for porphyry copper and mesothermal type -sulpha-de deposits. These have assisted with geological mapping as well as the definition of various sulphide depos-its. The application of these methods at the Frieda-Nena deposits, Papua New Guinea, can be used as a case study for exploration in other parts of New Guinea.In 1993, Highlands Gold Limited carried out an intensive geophysical program over the Nena deposit. The methods employed included, CSAMT (controlled-source audio magneto-tellurics), airborne and ground elect-romagnetics, IP/resistivity and ground magnetics. The magnetic method was used as a regional mapping tool as well as a way of mapping alteration zones over both the Nena and Frieda River copper deposits. Electromagnetics, in part-icular FLAIRTEM, is a rapid reconn-aissance tool as well as a detailed mapping tool for the location of Nena-style massive sulphide deposits. IP/ resistivity is an expensive but most useful tool for mapping out Frieda porphyry copper style disseminated sulphides as well as Nena style deposits. It can be used to define drill targets in areas of difficult Access.a

Some of the practices of the mining industry that may place an undesirable stress on the groundwater environment are coming under increasing scrutiny from legislators and regulatory agencies. Among these practices are mine dewatering, the use of tailings ponds, land rehabilitation, and technological innovations such as in situ leaching of waste clumps and ore deposits. Pernichele, noting that 24 states have enacted legislation controlling to varying degrees the environmental effects of mining, has emphasized the importance of assessing the potential for damage to groundwater when evaluating, planning, and designing mining projects. 1 Illinois has enacted legislation requiring anyone opening, operating or abandoning a mine site to obtain a permit from the Illinois EPA. The law is one of the first to require regular monitoring and reporting to a control agency. Legislation has also been recently enacted at the national level that will have a significant impact on the mining industry; e. g., the Federal Water Pollution Control Act Amendments of 1972 (Public Law 92-500). The stated objective of this Act is to restore and maintain the chemical, physical and biological integrity of the nation's waters. Specifically, according to Sec. 102(a), the Administrator of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is required to prepare or develop comprehensive programs for preventing, reducing or eliminating the pollution of the navigable waters and groundwaters and improving the sanitary condition of surface and underground waters. The definition of the terms "pollution" and "pollutant" is of particular significance to those who must comply with PL 92-500. The definitions are quite broad and include most of the adverse water quality effects of man's activities. As defined in Sec. 502(19), "pollution means the man-made or man-induced alteration of the chemical, physical, biological and radiological integrity of water." Within the Act, the list of pollutants includes dredged spoil, solid waste, incineration residue, chemical wastes, radioaetive materials, heat, wrecked or discarded equipment, rock, sand, cellar dirt, and industrial waste discharged into water.

Dairy operations constitute ~2.5% of annual U.S. greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, making dairies one of the largest sources of industrial GHG emissions. We are developing a novel, integrated system to achieve a net reduction in dairy GHGs while producing value-added materials and products. This integrated manure-to-commodities system converts dairy manure to bioenergy, sequesters carbon by converting volatile fatty acid-rich fermenter supernatant to bioplastics, and utilizes anaerobic digester (AD) and polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) reactor effluents to produce algae that can be harvested and internally recycled to enhance PHA production and sequester carbon. A decision-making tool is being developed for the integrated system that quantifies net GHG reduction, carbon sequestration, nutrient management and economics.

In recent years considerable interest has been shown in surface-alloyed metals, particnlarly those of chromium (chromized steels), which have excellent corrosion resistance under a variety of severe conditions, and may undergo bending and flanging operations without spalling. An early method1 employed to produce a high-chromium case on steel was developed by Kelley in 1921. It consisted of heating a low-carbon steel in intimate contact with powdered chromium in the presence of hydrogen at temperatures sufficiently high to permit diffusion of chromium into the steel. The usefulness of this process was limited because the extremely high tem- peratures of 1200º to 1400ºC. (2200° to 2550°F.) caused excessive grain growth and warpage. Louenstein and Ulmer2 packed iron castings in ferrochromium and com- mon salt, and heated for approximately three hours at 930º to 1040°C. (1700º to 1900ºF.). A recent and more practical method of depositing chromium on steel surfaces has been developed in Germany by Daeves, Becker and Steinberg3-8 and in Russia by Izgaryshev and Sarkisov.9 This process consists of passing gaseous chromium chloride over the steel to be chromized at temperatures of 900º to 1000ºC., or packing them in a porous, ceramic material that previously had been saturated with chromium chloride. The identification of the real internal rates of return (IRR's) of a project is essential for its economic evaluation. The existing methods for the calculation of IRR's are both cumbersome and unreliable, mainly because of their inability to effectively isolate the real IRR's and incapability of discovering multiple IRR's of even multiplicity. In this paper, a concept of the 'cash flow pattern tree used for isolation of the real IRR's of a project is presented. This concept, combined with the Sturm procedure for counting the real distinct zeros of a polynomial within a specified interval, leads to the development of a method and computer program for isolation and calculation of the real IRR's of a project. The method examines whether or not real IRR's exist, and if they do, isolates them within bounded and narrow intervals in a mathematically founded way. The isolated IRR's, whether simple or multiple, are subsequently calculated either directly or by means of an appropriate approximation procedure. Numerical examples assist the development of the method and the corresponding computer algorithm. Because any Net Present Value treated as a function of interest rate can easily be transformed into a polynomial, the method presented also constitutes a method for finding the real zeros of a polynomial.

Tests demonstrated that aqueous solutions of sodiu~n sulfide would dissolve over 95 pct of the cinnabal- in 5 pct Hg flrotation concentrates and 60 to 90 pct of the cinnabav in low-grade ol-es. Double-leach tests showed that potassiutn sulfide would dissolve 90 pct of the avsenic sulfide in Hg-As satnples and only 1 to 10 pct of the Hg; the sodium sulfide would then dissolve 80 to 90 pct of the rernaining Hg and 30 to 70 pct of the vemaining As. 1 HIS paper describes the extraction, by alkaline sulfide solutions, of mercury from cinnabar-bear ing ores and flotation concentrates. Leaching time and solution temperature had minor effects on mercury extraction when compared to the effects of reagent quantity and ore type and grade. Cinnabar, although readily soluble in sodium sulfide, was only partially soluble in potassium sulfide and essentially insoluble in ammonium sulfide. A double leach process was developed to extract selectively the arsenic from Hg-As products with K2S and to treat the residue with sodium sulfide-hydroxide solutions to extract the mercury.' Mercury was then recovered from the pregnant solutions either by precipitation with metallic aluminum or by electrodeposition. The solubility of HgS in alkaline sulfide solutions was first reported by Volhard in 1878.' The first reported commercial application was made in 1915 when Thornhill applied the method to the treatment of an amalgamation tailing.3 Mullhollen, in 1911. described the chemical reaction of HgS with Na,S and alkaline hydrate to be:4 Most investigators have reported using a 4-pct sodium sulfide and a 1-pct sodium hydroxide soluti~n.3-4 An increase in temperature or excessive dilution of the solution causes the reaction to be reversed. Church Holmes described a similar process used for the extraction of antimony from silver concentrates at the Sunshine Mining Company's mill at Kellogg. Idaho.5 More recently. Erspamer and Wells reported the results of leaching studies on a Hg-Sb ore from Alaska.6 EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Leaching tests were made on samples of mercury ore from eight deposits in Oregon, Washington, and Idaho. In addition. tests were made on flotation concentrates from seven of the samples as well as a flotation concentrate from an operating mill. Since previous investigators reported reagent requirements greatly in excess of that required by the equation HgS + Na2S = HgS . Na2S, initial studies were made on chemically pure HgS. Results showed that the reaction actually required about 1 g of Na,S per g of HgS in an aqueous solution rather than 0.338 g of Na,S as indicated by the equation. To check further the matter of reagent requirements, Na2S and HgS were mixed together in equal mole ratios. Water was then added, a drop at a time, until the components reacted; X-ray diffraction analyses showed no HgS nor Na,S present. The yellow hydrate compound which formed would not redissolve until about three additional mole equivalents of Na,S were added to the solution. This indicated that a stable solution would require at least 4 moles of Na2S for each mole of HgS. While these implications may be valid for pure HgS, the possibility of entirely different results caused by the existence of other elements present in ores and concentrates was recognized. [SECRETARY'S ]NOTE.-The following notes, arranged and edited in this office, but not yet revised by the author, were placed at my disposal with much modest hesitation (due to their incomplete and fragmentary character), upon my earnest request, and my argument that such recent and trustworthy data concerning a new and important mining industry ought not to be withheld from our Transactions, simply because they are not sufficient to constitute a, complete academic treatise on the subject. This argument is recommended to the attention of many other members, who are waiting for the opportunity to contribute something "monumental" to our Transactions. In a number of instances, death has nulli¬fied this ambition, and the intended "monumental" contribution has turned out to be an obituary notice by the Secretary, instead of a valuable record of the professional experience thus hopelessly lost to the world.-R. R.] The official publications of the the Russian Government give fairly complete statistics of the dredges operated in the Empire; and in a recent English bluebook, Mr. Cook's report on Siberian Trade presents a brief account of dredging in Siberia. The data in Table I. (not given by Mr. Cook) have been taken from the Gold Mining Messenger (Russian) for July, 1905. These interesting statistics, though incomplete, show that the Yenisei dredges are working on poor ground and yield small returns. According to report, but few yield a profit exceeding 10 per cent. per annum on the capital invested. In the summers of 1904 and 1905, I traveled in the Urals as far north as lat. 61° N., long. 61° E., on the the Lozva river, a part of the vast system of the 01) river. This clear-water stream starts from the summits of the Urals at an altitude of 4,000 ft., and flows through a flat country, densely wooded with larch, spruce, pine, fir, birch and poplar. The river is full of fish, and is navigable for good-sized steamers as far as Ivdell. T HE Executive Board of the American Engineering Council held its fourth meeting at St. Louis on the first anniversary of the organizing conference which met in Washington on June 3,1920. Representatives of a number of the leading engineering organizations in the vicinity of St. Louis were present by invitation. The members of the Executive Board were guests of the Associated Engineering Societies of St. Louis. They were given a delightful ride about the city and were entertained at the Glen Echo Country Club at dinner. The special committee that had been appointed to draft resolutions to Mr. Hoover submitted the following, which were adopted : WHEREAS, our President, Herbert Hoover, has been appointed Secretary of Commerce in the Cabinet of the President of the United States, and WHEREAS, in consequence of his acceptance of this high public office, he has deemed it necessary to tender his resignation as President of The Federated American Engineering Societies.

A field operable, breadboard model, borehole radar was developed for the detection of hazardous geological anomalies in and above a coal seam in advance of mining. A four-inch diameter downhole probe was fabricated and tested in several environments. The radar transmitter was also employed in a cross-hole or through transmission mode to determine natural geotechnical and man-made conditions between boreholes. Sensitivity to underground conditions in both modes of operation were indicated.

"At first glance, the activities related to mining and mineral exploration appear to be local or domestic, rather than international, in nature. Minerals, as corporeal or tangible property, form an integral part of the land in which they are found until extracted and exploited commercially. Even in the latter phase, the tangible nature of minerals gives the impression that the law governing the commercialization of minerals is the law of their situs at any given time. The nature of minerals appears to negate the international aspect of mineral enterprises.The fundamental flaw in the above analysis is its focus upon the nature of minerals, rather than the role of persons in mineral enterprises. The high costs of mineral exploration and commercialization invariably require the involvement of international consortiums or joint ventures. Governments may not have access to the funds necessary to exploit the mineral resources that they control. Local or domestic enterprises may not have sufficient expertise for mineral exploration. Further, markets for various types of minerals are far from localized or static. For these and other reasons, the tangible and localized nature of minerals belies the fundamentally international nature of mineral exploration and commercialization."

In previous publications,5 results of single-blow bit tooth impacts on saturated rocks at various stress states were reported. This paper extends these earlier works to include study of bit impact tests on salt water-saturated Berea and Bandera sandstone samples under conditions of elevated confining and pore pressure. During the tests dynamic filtration and deposition of a mud cake were occurring due to the presence of drilling mud in the borehole and a borebole-to-formation pressure differential. Results indicate that saturation of these sandstones with salt water tends to make them weaker than when saturated with nonreactive fluids. Plastic failure often occurs even when extremely high fluid-loss muds are present in the borehole. The failure mode tends toward plasticity with decreasing fluid loss. Brittle failure of sandstones in mud-filled holes is apparently relatively rare. Depending on the stress level, and the associated failure mode, withdrawal of the bit tooth induces a tensile force that seems rather important relative to the quantity of rock removed by vertical tooth impact. INTRODUCTION A vast majority of the oil wells drilled today involve the use of colloidal muds having a measurable mud filtrate loss. It is known from field experience that reduction of the water loss of a mud generally results in a reduction of the penetration rate. This paper describes an investigation of crater formation at simulated bottom-hole pressure conditions for drilling fluids having different water losses. The literature on single bit tooth impact (cratering) at atmospheric conditions is extensive, but only a limited amount of work has been performed at the stress conditions similar to that found in oil wells. Spherical penetrator cratering tests on rocks at hydrostatic pressure were performed by Payne and Chippenda1e.1 Chisel impact studies on limestone with independently varying overburden and borehole pressure and atmospheric pore pressure were reported by Garner, et al.2 Gnirk and Cheatham3 performed "static" penetrator tests on dry rocks at equal overburden and borehole pressures. Podio and Gray4 studied the effect of pore fluid viscosity at atmospheric pore and borehole pressures and varying overburden pressures. Their results illustrated the importance of fluid saturation of the rock. Yang and Gray5 reported single tooth impact tests on saturated rocks at elevated borehole, pore and confining pressures, but with equal pore and borehole pressures. For the work reported in Refs. 4 and 5, filtration across the hole bottom purposely was avoided. Maurer6 has investigated the effect of independently varying pore and borehole pressures at elevated overburden pressures by using a zero water-loss mud in the borehole. His tests were carried out under conditions that allowed independent control of overburden, pore and borehole pressures, but without control of filtration at the hole bottom. EXPERIMENTAL APPARATUS AND PROCEDURE APPARATUS The single blow chisel impact apparatus used by Garner,2 as modified for this study, is shown in Fig. 1. A cross section of the pressure vessel is shown in Fig. 2. Several pieces of auxiliary equipment were added to the original apparatus in order that the borehole and pore pressure could be applied in a manner analogous to the actual bottom-hole situation. The pore-pressure system included a filtrate volume-measuring transducer and had sufficient surge capacity to allow filtrate to be injected into the sample without significant changes in pore pressure at points remote to the borehole. The borehole-pressure system contained a cross connection to the pore-pressure system so that both systems could be pressured simultaneously. According to the Bureau of Mines annual survey, there were 318 petroleum refineries in the United States with a total daily crude throughput capacity of 8,632,390 barrels as of January 1, 1956. Compared with the previous year the total number of refineries declined 8 while the crude throughput capacity increased 211,760 barrels daily. Three refinery districts accounted for 90 percent of the crude-oil capacity increase, the California district 34 percent; the Texas Gulf Coast district, 31 percent; and the Indiana-Illinois-Kentucky district, 25 percent. Decreases in capacity during the year were reported for the East Coast, Appalachian #1, and the Arkansas-Louisiana Inland districts. The capacity of the average refinery to process crude oil increased during 1955 from 25.830 barrels daily to 27,145.

After months of negotiations, the U. S. has agreed to buy between 6000 and 7000 long tons of Bolivian tin now stockpiled at Peruvian and Chilean ports, at $1.175 per lb, f.o.b. South American Ports. Harry A. McDonald of the Reconstruction Finance Corp. signed the contract with Victor Andrade, Bolivian ambassador. The Mercantile Metals and Ore Corp., of New York City, acted as the agent of Bolivia's Banco Minero in negotiating the deal. The contract is a short term one. Throughout the talks, the U. S. refused to make a long term agreement because of the possibility that Bolivia will soon nationalize its mines. The Bolivians desired to sell the U. S. 18,000 tons during a one-year pact. The price agreed upon is roughly the same as with Malayan producers. In the meantime, American Smelting & Refining Co., signed over control of its operations to the Bolivian Government. The formal act of leasing the mines to the Bolivian Government follows the announcement last July by the company that it was closing operations because of high costs. Contract terms were not disclosed.

The Kayford, Boone and Nicholas Division of Bethlehem Mines Corporation operates a modern coal preparation plant in Van, West Virginia. Since the start-up of the Van Plant in 1976 until the summer of 1980, the refuse handling system proved to be a costly maintenance problem and a material handling bottleneck. During the 1980 two-week miner's vacation the original system, which included two screw conveyors and a drag conveyor, was replaced by an installation utilizing two Flexowall steep angle belt conveyors. This paper describes the technical and economic analysis that led to the new installation and reviews its first year operating performance. The Van facility is a heavy media plant designed to handle 127 mm x 0 raw metallurgical quality coal from the Powellton seam at a maximum feed rate of 590 TPH (metric tons per hour). Depending on mining conditions, the clean coal recovery rate averages between 50 and 65%. The plant is set up with three types of cleaning circuits. Coarse material (127 mm x 12 mm) is cleaned in heavy media baths. Intermediate size material (12 mm x .5 mm) is cleaned in heavy media cyclones. Fine coal (.5 mm x 0) is cleaned in a hydrocyclone1 froth flotation circuit.

Ground Modification System in terms of Jet Grouting for soil strengthening and mass stabilization was engaged for a power plant project in an international power project, engineered by L&T-S&L. The site Geology consist of cohesionless type of sandy alluvial deposits (silty fine sand) as the main formation. Ground water table is encountered at shallow depth. Geological interpretation is done using soil investigation data along with CPT’s. This paper discusses design and implementation of jet grout technique to improve the mechanical behaviour of soil. To distribute load evenly from superstructure, a layer of growmast (drainage blanket) is laid above jet grout columns. Settlement evaluation is done using Finite element analysis with Plaxis 2D and Settle 3D. In the project, selected equipment foundations are resting on jet-grout columns including vibratory equipment like 144MW Gas Turbine etc. The project has been commissioned in September 2021 and operating with full capacity.

Underground mining operating costs consist pri¬marily of direct costs such as labor, supervision, ma¬terials, and supplies, plus indirect costs. The material and supply costs vary substantially between mines but commonly range from 35 to 60% of the total direct costs. As part of the preparation of accurate operating cost estimates for a project, information must be as¬sembled to select the material and supply items and to determine the quantities of these items that will be required. Cost data then can be incorporated with the estimated material and supply requirements to determine the total material and supply costs for the project. Estimated quantities will vary considerably between mining projects depending upon factors such as the type of material being mined, the mining method, the equip¬ment selected, drilling and blasting techniques, mucking and haulage methods, ground support requirements, number of men employed, etc. Valuable information often can be obtained from suppliers and manufacturers, including data on current operating practices for similar projects, recommenda¬tions for the specific project, and preliminary cost quota¬tions. However, quotations obtained for estimates are generally higher than the prices paid at the time of purchase. Mines operating in the area, or those mining under similar conditions, also can provide essential design information, but it often is difficult to obtain cost information from the operators. Estimated costs for the most common major items of underground materials and supplies are presented in the accompanying tables. They represent current costs or cost ranges and are intended to be used only as a guide when preparing budgetary estimates for materials and supplies. Cost data were obtained mainly from suppliers and manufacturers, with up to three quotations being ob¬tained for each item whenever possible. In most cases, as noted in the table footnotes, prices were based on quantities representing normal requirements for me¬dium-size mine operations. Every attempt was made to assure accuracy. However, the cost for most items, especially those with multiple sources, can deviate sig¬nificantly for various reasons such as geographical loca¬tion, current market conditions, quantities ordered, size of the customer (which could influence the ultimate quantities purchased), and the ability of the purchasing department. It is also for these reasons that the actual amount individual mines are now paying for specific items may vary from the estimated cost in the tables. The cost for specific sizes of items that do not appear in the tables often can be factored from the data pre¬sented. Costs for many items can be converted easily to a unit that sometimes is more basic, but not as com¬monly used, such as from a length to a weight unit. Other items not listed, such as repair parts for equip¬ment, will involve contact with suppliers to determine specific recommended requirements and to obtain costs for these items as related to each individual project. Costs are expressed in terms of US dollars as of 1978 unless otherwise specified. All measurements, sizes, and weights are expressed in conventional units (i.e. feet, inches, pounds) ; applicable metric conversion fac¬tors follow each table. Mine trailing cables operated above safe thermal limits can cause premature insulation failure, increasing electrocution and fire hazards. Previous U.S. Bureau of Mines Pittsburgh Research Center research showed that, under static test conditions, electrical current levels permitted under present regulations may not limit cable temperatures to less than the 90 °C rating of reeled trailing cable. Continuing research under the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) addresses thermal characteristics of reeled trailing cable under dynamic test conditions more representative of field conditions, where operators constantly reel in and pay out cable. This research is in support of efforts by industry associations and the Mine Safety and Health Administration to establish safety guidelines for cyclically rated reeled machines. This paper describes a unique approach to measuring temperatures within reeled cable under dynamic test conditions. Fiber-optic sensors embedded within the metallic conductors measure temperatures at 1-m intervals along the entire length of cable. Temperature measurements are reported to be accurate to within 1±° C. The test setup requires access to only one end of the trailing cable, allowing researchers to freely reel in and pay out cable while temperature measurements are made, simulating field conditions. Manufacture of a fiberoptic-embedded trailing cable is described, along with initial test results that indicate the fiber-optic approach is viable.
