The Fence Lake Project is located in the Salt Lake coal field, an extension of the San Juan Basin. Geologic formations exposed in the Project area range in age from late Cretaceous to Quaternary. Coal is encountered in the Moreno Hill Formation (upper Cretaceous). Salt River Project (SRP) followed the basic textbook approach for the exploration, regional appraisal, detailed reconnaissance, detailed surface appraisal and three dimensional sampling (physical exploration). SRP is exploring this property as a potential fuel source for the Coronado Generating Station. Therefore, for the physical exploration stage, the quality sampling program was designed from a utility company viewpoint to determine possible impacts to the Station. Exploration drilling was completed in spring, 1982; September, 1982, and summer, 1984. Engineering, environmental, and land acquisition studies were added in the Summer, 1984 Program to more closely evaluate the potential Fence Lake Project coal supply option for the Coronado Generating Station. Studies, including drilling, are ongoing-at this time.

A research programme sponsored through the Australian Mineral Industries Research Association investigated two aspects of mine aerodynamics on model scale. These were aero- dynamic losses in (a) shaft/airway intersections and (b) losses created by mine cages moving in a combined haulage/ventilation shaft. The shaft/airway intersections studied included base and intermediate levels for both upcast and downcast. shafts, with one to four rectangular airways intersecting a circular shaft. Changes in intersection geometry were limited to the installation of 45¦ conical brow cutoffs of varying size and the addition of simple flow control devices. The relative air- flows between the airways and the downstream shaft were varied over a range employed in Australian mining practice. In general, experiments revealed that a small brow cutoff was significantly better than none at all, and a simple device such as a cone can reduce losses and improve flow stability at an intersection. The mine cage studies determined the effect on aerodynamic loss of cage area blockage, height/length ratio, openings in cage walls and surface roughness due to external structural members. In April 2010 three REMUS6000 series autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) have been used to simultaneously map large areas near the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (3°N) axis in water depths ranging from 1,000m to 4,000m. One vehicle was provided by the Leibniz-Institute for Marine Science, IFM-GEOMAR (Kiel, Germany) the other two were provided by the Waitt Institute for Discovery (La Jolla, USA) and managed by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute (USA). The REMUS6000 vehicles, manufactured by Hydroid Inc. (USA), are "cigar-shaped" vehicles (4m long and weighing approx. 900kg) and consist of a tapered forward section, a cylindrical midsection and a tapered tail section. An internal titanium strongback, which extends through much of the vehicle length, provides the structural integrity and acts as a mounting platform for syntactic foam, equipment housings, various sensors and release mechanisms. The AUVs can be used in various payload configurations such as multibeam bathymetry, electronic still camera, or subbottom profiler. For these missions the electronic still camera configurations was installed. An EDGETECH 2200M dual frequency (120/410 kHz) side scan sonar was used to map the seafloor, but other frequencies are readily available for more options in resolution and range. The 120 kHz side scan transmitter was used for most missions in order to map large areas (increased range) and to be able to fly at higher altitudes (between 70m and 90m) above the rough seabed encountered in this area. The maximum slant range was between 600m and 700m on both sides resulting in a swath width of up to 1.2 km. Line spacing ranged from nearly 1,000m in flat areas down to 400m in steep terrain. Side-scan mosaics were generated with a 1m resolution. Selected areas were targeted by the higher resolution 410 kHz transmitter as well as by bottom photographs flying as low as a few meters above the seabed. The vehicles navigated autonomously using a combination of inertial navigation (Kearfott T-24 or T-16 INS) and long baseline acoustic navigation by computing their range to two moored acoustic transponders. Working efficiently in this rough topography at speeds above 3 knots was only possible due to the obstacle avoidance capabilities of these AUVs.

Solution mining, sometimes also refered to as chemical mining or bacterial mining, is an innovative technology which, by making use of proper chemical reagents and taking advantage of bio-chemical action of some micro-organism species, can dissolve effectively most. desirable metallic values from ores and then extract them profitably from the resultant metal-bearing solution by suitable means to form the metal product it is more preferable to the conventional mining methods, not only because of its capability to improve working conditions and minimize environmental problems either underground or on surface, but also for its amenability in particular, to exploit low-grade or submarginal ore bodies, or those deposits which are too deep-seated to be mined out economically. Furthermore, it also provides a potential approach to win metals directly from their ores or ore-deposits in-situ by more simplified methods and at a lower cast than the conventional mining-milling-smelting process would do previously. Hence, in developing countries such as China, it will most, probably become a new mining tool of great promise. (1)

The US Bureau of Mines is cooperating with Cyprus Mineral Park Mining Co., Columbia University, and the US Geological Survey in investigating the feasibility of applying in situ leach mining methods to fracture-hosted, supergene copper sulfide (chalcocite) ores. This paper presents the initial findings of mineralogical, hydrogeological, and geochemical characterization studies conducted at the Mineral Park mine, located in the Wallapai mining district of northern Arizona. A design for in situ leaching is proposed that would minimize the need for blasting prior to leaching, and would enable economical development of deep reserves at the Mineral Park mine. The in situ leaching design would also reduce the potential for long term acid rock drainage.

The Waukon iron deposit comprises about 210 acres situated 2-1/2 miles north of Waukon, in Allamakee County, northeastern Iowa. The deposits have been exploited intermittently since 1899 and have produced about 67,000 tons of concentrated iron ore. From January to May 1943, the Bureau of Mines investigated the deposit to determine the extent of the ore-bearing material and its amenability to concentration, Seventy-one test pits were sunk. Those that indicated are of a grade high enough to warrant concentration tests were sampled. Average grade of ore was indicated to be 37.02 percent iron and 27.78 percent silica on a dry basis. Beneficiation tests indicated that the percentage of recovery might be relatively low.

"Pulang Copper Mine is located in Shangri-La county, Diqing Prefecture, Yunnan Province, with currently defined copper reserve of 4.8 million tonnes of copper metal and an average grade of 0.34% Cu. The mineralized zone in a dome shape is 2,300 m long, 600–800 m wide, and 1,000 m high. At present, the project is at a construction phase, with a first-stage mining and processing capacity of 12.5 million tonnes of ore per year. Ore haulage is planned via a drift and ore pass development system. The cavability of mineralized rock is classified into three types (II, III, IV), with type III accounting for more than 98% of the total reserves. The cavability of the orebody is generally considered to be good and block caving mining method is planned. Semi-autogenous grinding and ball milling are adopted for the mineral processing. The tailing dam construction method is a center-line method.INTRODUCTIONAs the China's largest underground nonferrous mine, Pulang Copper Mine is located in the northeast of Shangri-La County, Diqing Prefecture, Yunnan Province, China. It is 62 km northeast of Shangri-La city. Shangri-La County is a Tibetan-dominated, multiple-ethnic region, with a population of approximately 163,000 in 2009. The county is rich in mineral and water resources, thriving with tourism. Its economy is also dominated by agriculture. To date, the defined copper reserves at the Pulang Copper Mine is 4.8 million tonnes of copper metal at an average grade of 0.34% Cu. In addition, it contains a gold reserve of 145 tonnes, a silver reserve of 2,754 tonnes, a molybdenum reserve of 0.19 million tonnes, and a sulphur reserve of 10.5 million tonnes. The first-stage mining and processing capacity is planned at 12.5 million tonnes of ore per year. When it ramps up to this production rate, the mine will produce copper concentrate containing 50,000 tonnes of copper and molybdenum concentrate containing 968 tonnes of molybdenum. A drift and ore pass system is planned for ore haulage and mining method is a block caving method. Semi-autogenous grinding and ball milling are considered for mineral processing. Goethite is an important naturally occurring sorbent for divalent heavy metals and has often been used as a model compound in studies of adsorption on oxide mineral surfaces. Surface complexation modeling, surface spectroscopy, and electrochemical techniques have all been applied to goethite adsorption. Modeling studies have shown that usually several different sets of fitted parameters are equally successful in representing surface charging and adsorption data. Surface spectroscopic data are proving valuable in determining the nature of the surface sites, and refined models now incorporate structural information on interatomic distances and coordination numbers. Multisite surface complexation models can give very good fits to surface charging and adsorption data, but further improvements are needed to better represent surface reactions involving exchange of protons and divalent cations. Recent experimental and modeling studies on adsorption of divalent transition metals on goethite are described and the present status of the field is assessed.

The subtle nature of the flow inside the hydrocyclone has encouraged development of mathematical models for predicting its performance, which are widely used in simulation of comminution circuits. But most of the models available are based on single average feed density. But the feed to hydrocyclone classifier is generally mixture of particles of different densities. This effect of varying density of feed particles on performance of hydrocyclone has been reported in literature. Further investigation of the effect of multi component feed on the performance of hydrocyclone is the objective of this work. This work involves experimental work to study multicomponent behaviour in various size cyclones. The performance of hydrocyclone for feed mixture of magnetite and quartz has been studied. The effect of presence of magnetite, a high density material on efficiency of separation of quartz has been analysed. It was observed that the effect of component interaction increases with feed solids concentration leading to an increased cut-size for a given optimum cyclone conditions. Based on the multi-component exiperiments available in literature, a concept for modeling the performance of hydrocyclones is proposed. A set of semi-empirical model equations for cut-size, sharpness of separation are presented. An attempt to validate the new hydrocyclone model on multi-component behaviour is made.

Some time ago, a prominent engineer asked a representative of the firebrick industry to prepare a comprehensive paper on blast-furnace refractories. It was to have been the purpose of this paper to gather practical experiences from widely different sources, in the hope of determining what kind or kinds of firebrick were best adapted for certain uses. This engineer sent questionnaires to the large consumers of blast-furrace linings and stovebrick and received very detailed replies as to their experiences. These replies are conflicting, but, having been turned over to the writer, form the basis of this attempt to meet the request. Because of the impossibility of making final recommendations at this time, a few of the more interesting and commonly known methods of studying refractories are also discussed, as well as the more recent developments in this field. The first reply to the questionnaire stated that good service was being secured from the linings. This satisfactory condition was attributed to the use of a very good distributor. The writer believed that manufacturers try to and do produce a good product and that the proper handling of equipment is of the utmost importance, if good results are to be secured. The type of bricks used was not mentioned. The second reply stated that good life was secured from the furnace linings, but that the writer had had soft-fired stovebrick crumble and, for that reason, preferred a hard-fired product for use in this position. The type of bricks used was not mentioned. The third reply stated that firebrick had crumbled from the mantle up; the cause was not known. The fourth reply stated that the stove linings were satisfactory. Hand-made furnace linings failed after.4 years' service so a steam-pressed lining- was installed which was still good after 4 years of service. Consequently, a second steam-pressed lining was installed but this disintegrated at the top after the furnace had been in blast 7 months. The firebrick manufacturer attributed this failure to the expansion of iron blocks that had been installed at the stock line to prevent erosion. The fifth reply stated that the present "hard-burned" hand-made furnace lining had worn away very uniformly to the depth of only 5 in.

In order to continue the advancements made during the past two decades in the reduction of the severity of accidents and injuries in underground coal mining, closer attention will have to be paid to the increasing number of accidents resulting in disabling injuries and lost time. With the increased emphasis on safety training reflected in the Federal Mine Safety and Health Amendments Act of 1977 (Public Law 96-1641, and on MSHA's current focus on the application of Job Safety Analysis, it appears that the acquisition, evaluation, and application of accident and incident data will take on an even greater importance. To manage this large amount of information will require a significant commitment of time and attention on the part of mine training departments. A USBM-sponsored research project is currently being completed at Penn State which focuser on the development of a model training program for mining. The program is based on five distinct steps which represent the coupling of a needs assessment with the program implementation. The five steps are: 1) database analysis, 2) workplace observations, 3) identification of trainable problem areas, 4) a library of training resources, and 6) the implementation of the program. In each of these areas, the microcomputer has proven to be a valuable tool for collecting, analyzing, and presenting accident and incident information. This paper will detail the manner in which microcomputers have been fully integrated into the model training program. Examples of applications at existing mines will also be discussed.

The manganese removal from aqueous solution containing high Mn2+ concentration by adsorption and oxidation was studied using manganese oxide particles as the adsorbent. The operating parameters including pH, flow rate, initial manganese concentrations, and oxidant dosage affect the performance of Mn2+ removal were evaluated in a laboratory packed column. In the multi-column adsorption tests, each additional column doubled the time for complete manganese removal. No further decrease of pH was also observed once it was lowered to pH 4.5 to 5. This finding implied the possibility of complete high manganese removal without further pH adjustment during adsorption. Oxidation of Mn2+ by dissolved oxygen was found to be insignificant for manganese removal for high Mn2+ concentration. Adsorption was the predominated mechanism involved with manganese removal. Extremely low H+/Mn2+ stoichiometry compared to the reported values was measured. These low values suggested that different adsorption mechanisms such as chemisorption other than H+/Mn2+ ion exchange might play an important role at low pH. This paper presents the quantity and explanation of the results obtained for the mechanism of adsorption and oxidation of high concentration manganese on the manganese ore particles.

In contrast to pyrometallurgy's six thousand year history in the production of metals, that of hydrometallurgy is of relatively recent origin. The earliest reference to it at all was in the 16th century, with the first applications to copper in the 17th and 18th. In the 19th century, increased demands for pure metal resulted in development of electrolytic refining, and early in this century electrowinning. The rapid growth in wpper production in the present century, paricularly in the United States and Chile, stimulated the development of new technology for leaching, and for the recovery of copper from leach solutions. Solvent extraction has become a major factor during the past quarter century by permitting novel leaching technology which produces dilute or complex solutions. In addition, solvents other than sulphuric acid, and chemical methods for precipitating copper metal are now of increasing interest. These are trends which should grow in importance in the future with the need to process lower grade and more complex materials. The evolution of copper hydrometallurgy is reviewed briefly and key factors in recent major developments are presented with details of specific operations and with trends for the future indicated. The relative importance of copper hydrometallurgy is compared to that of pyrometallurgy in the light of probable changes in ore supplies and character.

The rare earth elements (REEs) assay and recovery in leaching processes is being determined using expensive analytical methods, ICP-AES, and ICP-MS. This paper presents a neural network model to predict the effects of operational variables on the lanthanum, cerium, yttrium, neodymium recovery in the leaching of apatite concentrate. The effects of leaching times: ten to 40 min, pulp densities: 30 to 50 per cent, acid concentrations: 20 to 60 per cent and agitation rates: 100 to 200 rpm were investigated and optimised on REEs recovery in laboratory at a leaching temperature of 60¦C. The obtained data, on the laboratory optimisation process were used for training and testing of a neural network. A feed-forward artificial neural network with 4-5-5-1 arrangement, was capable of estimating the REEs leaching recovery. Neural network predicted values were in good agreement with the experimental results. The correlations of R = 1 in training stages, and R =  0.971, 0.952, 0.985 and 0.98 in testing stages were results for Ce, Nd, La and Y recovery predictions respectively and that theses values are considerably acceptable. It was shown that the proposed neural network model accurately reproduces all the effects of operation variables, and can be used in the simulation of a REEs leaching plant.

This paper presents an analysis of gold production and prices over an extended period. Production patterns are provided for the world as a whole and for the five major producing countries. Gold prices as a function of interest rates, as measured by municipal bond rates, are given for the period 1947 to the present. World gold production has had a phenomenal increase since 1980, with the exception of South Africa, all major producing nations participated in this increase, even though the price of gold generally has been decreasing since the high level attained in 1980.
