This paper describes the development of a mathematical model for simulating the behavior of a longwall coal production system. The longwall simulator is a design simulator incorporating both deterministic and stochastic methods to calculate: (a) the size and density of support; (b) the cutting force, power requirements and haulage speed for the loader-shearer; (c) the conveyor size, speed and power requirements; and (d) delay generation at head and tail-gates and the longwall face.

Blasting trials using Daveytronic Electronic Delay Detonator systems (EDD’s) were conducted at the Alpha Ferro Quany (Pretoria) and the Eikeboom Colliery near Witbank in November 1999. The objectives of the trials were to determine the influence of accurate hole firing on rock fragmentation, blast-induced vibration and blast throw. This paper provides an outline of the trials and an analysis of the results. The results were compared with a normal shock tube initiation system. Fragmentation was measured using video-imaging techniques at the hard rock Ferro Quarry for one conventional shock tube blast and two EDD blasts. No significant difference was measured in the fragmentation between the shock tube blast and the two electronic detonator blasts. Joint planes mostly defme the fragments at Ferro Quarry. The fragment sizing was therefore controlled mainly by the rock structure and the blast timing appeared to have no influence. Vibration measurements made at Ferro Quarry indicate that electronic detonators have a marked effect on vibration frequencies compared to shock tube systems. The more accurate detonators resulted in a narrower f+equency band at lower amplitude with similar timing. By modifying the blast timing, the dominant frequencies were changed. The electronic detonators had a significant positive influence, therefore on blast vibration and its control. The timing scatter measured from the shock tube blast was considerable, with measured inhole detonator scatter at 48 ms over a sample of 19 units. Surface delay periods less than 42 ms would therefore not be able to provide effective sequential firing. The scatter of the Daveytronic units was below the 2 ms resolution of the high-speed camera used to film the blasts. Reliable sequential firing, even at very short delay intervals was considered the main reason for notable improved throw in an overburden blast at Eikeboom Colliery. Blast throw was improved by 25% for the test blast.

This mine is situated upon the western slope of the Meadow Valley mountains, about 70 miles by road from the present end of the railroad-track, which is at Uvada, on the UtahNevada boundary. This boundary-line marks fairly well a certain change in type of scenery from western Utah to eastern Nevada,—from a region in which the desert valleys predominate over the mountain ranges to one in which they are in about equal proportion. The railroad from Salt Lake City runs somewhat W. of S., for the most part along the bottom of the ancient Lake Bonneville. The latter part of its present course follows the axis of the southern arm or bay of that lake, now known as the Escalante desert. Along this bay, its line is a mathematically straight one, with no perceptible change of level for two " tangents " of more than 30 miles each, varying but a few degrees in direction. This paper introduces an analytical approach for the determination of the vertical stress in the chain pillar system between two adjacent longwall panels. The development of this approach is based on the principles of fracture mechanics and superposition. Some empirical formulae have also been incorpomted into the development of the mathematical model. The mine entries and longwall gobs are treated as Mode I cracks in an infinite plate while the resistance of gob material and the characteristics of the pillar yield zone are considered as the distributed forces on the surface of the cracks. An user- friendly computer program has been developed to facilitate the calculation involved in this task. This approach is as accurate as the numerical analysis methods but requires much less expertise and computer hardware and software to apply

In an area north of Mowit Ica chip sampling of limonitic outcrops on a regional scale led to the investigation of a number of areas considered to be geochemically anomalous for copper and zinc. These areas were closely gridded,end where geochemical results were favourable, they were subsequently drilled or ro¦titeaned Che results indicated that for copper Lne anomalies were mainly associated wiL_ ironstone formed in areas of faulting. is suggested that copper is able to move considerable distances by ground water movement and is likely to be fixed under conditions of low pH. The movement of zinc is more difficult to explain but it appears to have an affinity for iron and is only deposited in areas having a high pH (i.e. doioiirific scdimet=Cs).

In this paper, the model of optimizing selection on preparation of Powdery Emulsion Explosives(PEE) is established by the Neural Net Theory(NNT). On the basis of some data in the study of PEE, the training, prediction and optimizing selection of the Neural Net (NN) model are finished by a compiling procedure. "During the development of a mining project, samples are taken for metallurgical tests. The sample can be a composite sample made of material from a selection of various drilling products or a sample from a mining test. It can be also a sample from an existing plant in order to investigate process enhancement. This sample can represent several tonnes of material which are analysed and split for use in various tests.In the current case, a composite sample of gold ore is dedicated to a Gravity Recoverable Gold (GRG) test. The properties of interest are the head grade of gold, the size distribution of the material, and the gold assay per size class. The sample is mixed and a sub-sample is taken to measure the feed properties: the size distribution and the gold assay per size class. The remaining material of the sample is subject to the first stage of concentration using the laboratory Knelson concentrator. The concentrate is analysed in its entirety, while a sample of tailings is taken for the same analysis. The remaining part of tailings is subject to grinding to feed the second and third stages of concentration. Similar sampling is performed at each stage.The concentration performances are analysed in light of these measurements. But what is the accuracy of the measurements of the properties? Pierre Gy’s theory of sampling, associated with a heterogeneity model built using the GRG test results, will answer this question. The current paper presents, through a real example, the calculation of the errors of the measurements of size distributions and gold assays performed during the GRG test. The uncertainties of the concentration performances and liberation size estimate are then calculated and their impact on the results interpretation is analysed.INTRODUCTIONDuring the development of a mining project, samples are taken for metallurgical tests. In order to take into account the ore variability in terms of gold deportment, it is recommended to perform variability studies (Dominy, Murphy, & Gray, 2011, Dominy, 2013) using samples representing various horizons or years of production. But for a given ore type, it can be necessary to perform many tests with different operating conditions (Brochot, 2012a). In that case, the variability of the samples is not due to the heterogeneity of distribution of the deposit, but only on the heterogeneity of constitution of the primary sample. The level of confidence associated with the estimated performance parameters is directly linked to the overall error (including sampling error) of the measurements performed during the tests."

DEMANDS upon power plants by the war program in 1941 intensified problems of coal utilization. It was an outstanding year in that field. The domestic heating stove witnessed outstanding development; the research folks progressing so rapidly that the design of the "perfect" stove is just around the corner. Use of colored motion pictures in analyzing fuel-bed performances has reached a new high with the colored pictures taken at minute intervals and projected at sixteen frames a second as shown by the Koppers Coal Co. and the Anthracite Institute (on domestic stokers) and the Consolidated Edison Co. (industrial stokers). Continued efforts of this kind will be beneficial in analyzing further some of the "Code for Testing Coal" problems confronting Subcommittee No. 2 of the Joint A. I. M. E. - A. S. M. E. Committees.

"INTRODUCTION The Bureau of Mines frequently receives requests for information and advice regarding the equipment necessary for establishing laboratories for the analysis of mine atmospheres. Such requests are made by mining companies, State mining departments, and other agencies concerned with the safety of mining operations. In many instances it is desired to install a complete laboratory, which will necessitate purchase of suitable gas-analysis apparatus and all the minor but important accessory equipment needed to carry on this type of work. Although publications that describe methods and techniques applicable to the analysis of mine atmospheres are available, it is not within the scope of such publications to give detailed information on laboratory equipment or design. Persons unfamiliar with laboratory practices and gas-analysis procedures may find it difficult to decide upon the proper equipment for their particular needs and to itemize the various accessories that must be obtained to set up a complete laboratory.The purpose of this circular is to discuss the different types of equipment that may be used in the analysis of mine atmospheres, with particular regard to the application and limitations of each type. Information on the various accessory equipment needed in a laboratory for the analysis of mine atmospheres is given also, and suggestions on laboratory design are included. As much of the necessary equipment may be obtained from laboratory supply houses, the information should aid in arriving at estimates of the cost of proposed laboratories.The procedures involved in the analysis of mine atmospheres are not described; such information is contained in publications referred to in this circular."

The high cost of gateroad repairs and maintenance in U.K. longwall coalmining is a clear indication of the failure of permanent support systems to fulfill their prime function, i.e. control of strata movement. The main component of gateroad support is the pack, the design and materials of which have experienced an important development process during the last 10-15 years. More recently, research investigators have attempted to give a design basis to pack quality and dimension, and reference is made to two theoretical approaches. In the course of a current research programme based upon in situ monitoring, interim design recommendations have been proposed as a means of effecting improvement in support efficiency. Identification of characteristic deformation behaviour forms the basis of the recommendations made and the subsequent improvement in gateroad performance reported.

The disposal of brines produced with crude petroleum and natural gas has been a long-continuing problem to oil and gas operators as well as to farmers and stock-raisers in the vicinity of producing fields. An impartial appraisal of conditions pertaining to the problem of brine disposal leads to the conclusion that study of the technical consideration, with proper weight given to the economic and social factors, is the most desirable approach to this problem. Brine disposal is a problem of such magnitude in certain areas in the State of Kansas that in August 1934 a cooperative agreement was made between the Kansas State Board of Health and the U. S. Bureau of Mines for a cooperative technical study of methods of brine disposal.

SAG mill throughput is often a bottleneck in increasing metal productivity. Improved size distribution control in the mill feed can be used to increase mill production. This can be accomplished by controlling blast fragmentation as a function of energy input and rock characteristics. Such an approach requires the integration of rock fragmentation and comminution modeling. The optimal mill feed size distribution is determined by adapting a population balance comminution model to a measure of rock hardness or fragility which is also relevant to the rock fragmentation that is achieved by blasting. The relation between the size distribution and fragility of the feed and of the mill's product and the critical size in a SAG mill is examined.

A study of Americarf coal-mine practice shows two of its distinctive features to be: A greater number of accidents per thousand employees than in any of the other leading coal-producing countries; a much greater percentage of the coal lost than in any of the other leading coal-producing countries. Although our subject is mainly concerned with the second feature, any consideration of mining methods should include safety, efficiency, and economy or costs. If the argument could be offered that our wasteful mining was necessary on account of safety, and that it is carried out with less loss of life than in other countries, the plea for conservation of coal could not he so strongly urged. But when we are wasteful of both life and property, the subject merits more: consideration than it has received. Some coal operators will doubtless say that the unit of accidents should be the number per million tons produced rather than per thousand employees, for by adopting this unit America probably stands in the lead rather than the lowest among the countries. However, vital statistics are not usually so expressed by other governments, by life and accident insurance companies, or in other industries, and it is merely begging the question and attempting to bolster up a bad condition to adopt a peculiar unit for the statement of our accidents. For many years the statement was made by various agencies, and was unchallenged, that "For every ton of bituminous coal mined in the United States a ton had been lost in the way of pillars left in the mines." This statement was undoubtedly true for many years, and although in the past decade some progress has been made toward obtaining a higher extraction, and in some districts very decided progress, the loss is still great; and, although no exact data can be given, it is probable that for the United States as a whole at least one ton is lost for every two mined.

POWDERED nonmetallic minerals and rocks of many different types are used extensively in industry for incorporation in compositions and manufactured products The term "mineral filler" is commonly employed to designate a material that is used for a specific purpose but not as an essential or reactive component Such a definition is not without objections, and it is indeed difficult to define fillers in any fully satisfactory manner, since the term has come to have so many different meanings and to cover such a wide range of uses. A filler is defined, for the purposes of this chapter, as a substantially inert material not specifically employed as a reactive or essential component, the primary function of which is to modify the properties or processing of a composition of matter or fabricated article Emery1 has emphasized that fillers change the properties of the product but are themselves unchanged in compounding or use The term "filler" appears to be rather general when referring to usages m bituminous compositions, rubber, composition floorings, fertilizers, plastics, textile finishes, and some others. In paper manufacture, in the paint industry and with insecticides, other terms are frequently employed, as is indicated, herinafter By placing emphasis on the function of the material used in modifying the properties of the composition or article, it is believed that a more useful classification of filler products and their applications may be derived. FUNCTIONS OF MINERAL FILLERS All of the manifold functions of mineral fillers cannot be listed in a summary review. A survey of the uses for these materials, however, shows that in nearly all cases the powders are employed to modify the properties of a composition of matter or those of a fabricated article, or to perform some useful function In the manufacture of either. This paper examines the difficulties of applying the finite element (FE) method of analysis to quantitative design of cable bolt systems. Cable bolt systems are in general use for ground control in VCR (Vertical Crater Retreat) topes throughout the world. However, despite their widespread use and importance, design of cable bolt systems is highly subjective. Two difficulties with the FE approach are examined: (i) the use of standard elements with a high aspect ratio (slender elements) to represent bolts, and (ii) the influence of cable bolts on hanging wall stability of a VCR study stope. Analysis results indicate that the use of slender elements for bolts is practical in large scale finite element analyses of VCR stopes. There are significant advantages in this approach to the engineering design of cable bolt systems in underground mining.

The results of laboratory grindability tests on coal are of primary importance to the designers and operators of coal grinding mills, and coal handling plants in general. However, the potential industrial application of these test results have not been fully realised due to a lack of laboratory-test/field data correlations. This paper focuses on the grindability characteristics of Queensland coals, and provides a new look at an old problem in terms of (i) a more rigorous characterisation of the grindability properties of coal and its associated mineral impurities, and (ii) the correlation of laboratory grindability test results with the size characteristics of run-of-plant thermal coals, and their pulverising characteristics in full-scale mills. A new grindability test is also proposed based on the Yancey, Geer and Price laboratory abrasion-test mill.
