Developed and built in 1982 for simultaneous bathy-metric and reflectivity mapping of the deep ocean by the Hawaii Institute of Geophysics, SeaMARC II was a breakthrough in sea-floor mapping technology. The design was developed cooperatively by industry and academia, and the system has served as a prototype for a new generation of mapping tools for operation in both shallow and deep water.Research programs using the SeaMARC II system have focussed on basic research into the geophysical evo-lution of the Pacific, ranging from intra-atoll mapping to surveys of the deep-sea trenches. During the past few years most work has been concentrated on detailed investigations of the morphology of mid-ocean spread-ing centers, seamounts, and the subduction zones which surround the Pacific. The detail provided by the high resolution, 10-km wide side-scan sonar images of fault and fold structures, combined with the swath of bathy-metric information obtained simultaneously, allow previ-ously unattainable analysis of seafloor morphology and are leading to development of detailed models for ocean crust genesis and deformation.

This paper deals with the minimization of ventilation costs for the controlled-flow mine ventilation network. Cost elements considered include the cost of power and the fixed cost of the fans. The problem is modeled in a mixed-integer programming format and solved via the branch and bound method. Computational experience with sample problems is discussed.

In December 1983 the author undertook an investigation in east Texas which was organized to learn the feasibility of applying geophysical techniques over shallow lignite deposits. The work embraced experimental high resolution seismic reflection and offset Wenner resisitivity sounds over three 4 to 4 mile test sections. This site also was sponsored by Woodward-Clyde Consultants (WCC) and a consortium headed by North American Coal Corporation. The principal objective of this investigation was to learn whether the aforementioned geophysical techniques could be applied over shallow lignite deposits (i.e. located at approximately 100' to 300' in depth) and consequently provide structural and stratigraphic information useful for resource and reserve characterization. A secondary objective was to determine if these same techniques could disclose the nature of the overburden and the distribution of ground water therein.

The manufacturing industry reinvented its approach to the manufacturing process by managing and measuring it end-to-end. This improved returns on production assets, improved information quality and reduced delivery time, resulting in larger net profits through cost reduction and improved cash flow. Today this approach is standard in the manufacturing industry. Resource development has many requirements in common with the manufacturing production line. These include: control of the various steps, transparency of the state of the process to various levels of the organisation and the overall efficiency with which the process is executed. The authors argue that the introduction of manufacturing execution systems (MES) concepts and technologies to resource development processes will lead to similar improvements in control, transparency and efficiency and could improve profitability and enable staff to work more effectively and make better decisions.

IT has been shown1 that in the absence of heavy metal salts, the nature of the alkali used to promote differential flotation-whether caustic soda, lime or sodium carbonate-is unimportant. The hydroxyl ion is the active depressant upon which differentiation depends, and the pH value determines whether a film of collector forms on any given mineral surface. Even when sodium cyanide is used in conjunction with alkalies, it is the pH value and not the nature of the alkali or its concentration that is important, for upon the pH value alone depends the fraction of the added sodium cyanide that is present as cyanide ion, which is the true depressant. When heavy metal salts become dissolved from partly oxidized ores, or are added intentionally as activators, conditions are different, and metallurgists have found that lime and sodium carbonate do not give identical results, even when added in amounts sufficient to produce the same pH value. In the few instances in which we had attempted to confirm this view, we had failed to do so, for, with nothing to guide us, we had inadvertently chosen solutions that gave contact curves of a "stand-ard type," which correspond to conditions of ready floatability. Now, however, we find that, in the presence of copper salts, and within a restricted range of reagent concentrations, the nature of the anions present is important, and that sodium carbonate does influence the results, apart from the usual effect due to its influence on pH value. With the recognition of this anion effect, and with the control of temperature already introduced,' it appears that the factors of major importance in connection with this set of reagents have been taken into consideration, and that the results obtained and the conclusions drawn from contact tests will be of more immediate value to the operator.

Thirty-six elements have been alloyed singly with cartridge brass. Ammonia and mercury stress-cracking tests have been conducted on the as-rolled and recrystallized strip. Ultra high purity cartridge brass has also been tested. Silicon improves stress- cracking behavior. High silicon (I per cent) cartridge brass quenched from high temperature (for example, 800 C.) annealing is exceptionally resistant to ammonia stress cracking. This improvement is not lost by subsequent cold working, but is greatly reduced by subsequent low temperature annealing. Phosphorus, arsenic, barium, cerium, magnesium, tellurium, tin, beryllium, and manganese benefit stress-corrosion resistance under some circumstances, but not others. The other alloying additions tried had no large effect on stress-cracking resistance. None of the elements added accelerated stress cracking. The impurities in commercial brass are not responsible for season cracking.

THE Liberty tunnels extend through a very steep hill in Pittsburgh (locally called Mount Washington) for a distance of slightly over a mile. Uncertainty and debate currently pervade the mining industry in New Zealand. The operational uncertainties, whether external (eg gold prices, the exchange rate), or internal (eg coal expansion difficulties), are large. In addition, many wider factors which influence mining are in a state of flux. State Coal Mines, the operating branch of the Mines Division of the Ministry of Energy I may be made a state corporation, with the remaining Mines Division functions being revamped. The agencies administering environmental legislation are to be restructured. Mining legislation amendments have been proposed and then dropped, and the area is now to be reviewed (The Press, 31 July 1985). Some mining licences have been withdrawn, and become the subject of heated debate in the community (The Press, 19 July 1985, and subsequent letters to the editor).

By means of the T6 treatment, the measurement of creep curves and microstructure observation, the influence of T6 heat treatment on the microstructure and creep properties of Ti-6Al-4V alloy is investigated. Results show that the microstructure of the forged alloy consists of the banded-like a phase and networks b phase. After sub-temperture T6 treated, the microstructure of alloy consist of the block a phase and ?networks basket? structure. Under the conditions of the applied stress of 575 MPa at 4000C, the forged alloy displays a lower creep lifetimes, after T6 treated the creep lifetimes of the alloy is enhanced to 548 h from 66 h, which is attributed to the formation of the network basket structure in which the needle-like phase are dispersedly distributed. As creep goes on, the denser dislocations in the a phase are concentrated to occur the dynamic recrystallization for refining grain. which is a main reason of the alloy displaying a better creep lifetimes and plasticity. Thereinto, the creep mechanism of the forged alloy is thought to be the slip of the straight <a> and <a+c> dislocation are activated on the prismatic planes and pyramidal planes, while the creep mechanism of T6 treated alloy is that wave-like <a+c> dislocations are activated on the pyramidal planes.

In this U.S. Bureau of Mines study, production trends have been analyzed for 82 gob gas ventholes on 7 longwall panels in the Lower Kittanning Coalbed, Pennsylvania. Cumulative production from individual holes was found to vary considerably, ranging from 0.03 x 106 to 10.1 x 106 m3. Peak production rates were generally about 0.03 x 106 to 0.06 x 106 m3/d, but rates over 0.10 x 106 m3/d were observed. The variability of gas production from individual holes can be attributed to&apos; several factors, including completion practices and problems, the extent of fracture development in the strata above the extracted panel, water production, and location on the panel. Of particular significance is hole location. Holes on the ends of the panels, where overburden strata are in tension because of the support of the surrounding pillars, were generally the highest and longest producers. This observation led to the experimental placement of gob gas ventholes in the zone of tension along the margin of a panel, instead of in the traditional centerline location, which is in compression. Analysis of 7 months of gas production data indicates that the experimental near-margin holes produced 77 pct more gas than did centerline holes on the same panel.

Contamination of by-product: sulfuric acid, by dissolved oxides of nitrogen (&apos;nitrates&apos;) occurs under some operating conditions encountered in sulfide roasting and smelting,, notably when oxygen-enriched air is used. This &apos;nitrate&apos; lowers the value of the acid and increases the effective cost of smelter gas desulfurization. The present paper describes measures taken at one smelter acid plant to remove this &apos;nitrate&apos;; it discusses the mechanism by which &apos;nitrates&apos; in some cases concentrate in one part of the plant and can be purged for more efficient treatment; and it describes a process developed by C-I-L Inc. for removal of &apos;nitrates&apos; from such a purge stream. Advantages of the process include very low reagent cost, recovery of all sulfuric acid values and safe handling of nitrous fumes.

In a recent review of the field of plastic deforrnation of metal single crystals, Maddin and chenl indicated the need for systematic investigations of the crystallography of the slip process with special attention to: a) The effect of the orientation of a crystal on the appearance of slip lines, b) The effect of high temperatures on the slip systems of aluminum, c) The effect of strain rate on the crystallography of slip. The present paper deals with the effect of temperature and strain rate on the mechanism of deformation of aluminum single crystals similarly oriented for single and duplex slip. About three years ago eight standard steels were prepared for the cooperative investigation of methods for oxygen analysis, sponsored by the Iron and Steel Division of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers and by the National Bureau of Standards. A preliminary report of the results was made at the annual meeting of the A.I.M.E. in February, 1936. † This report showed the reliability of vacuum-fusion methods and further brought out certain advantages of the fractional vacuum-fusion method. The results obtained by the authors with the latter method will be discussed here, with some comments on the procedure for those who are interested in determinations of gases in steel. Some additional comments are offered on the use of the polarizing microscope for identifying the inclusions in the steel to check and amplify the findings of the fractional vacuum-fusion analysis. Degassing the Crucible One of the sources of error in vacuum-fusion methods has been the blank gases evolved from the graphite crucible after preliminary out-gassing. We have used 1750" C. as the outgassing temperature. This gives a base pressure at that temperature of less than 0.030 mm. after one hour and of 0.004 mm. on dropping the temperature to 1575" C. At lower extraction temperatures the base pressure is 0.001 mm. at 1050" C., 0.002 mm. at 1170" and 0.003 mm. at 1320&apos; C. Because of the size of our induction coil we are limited to this temperature, although it &apos;would be advantageous to use 1950" to 2000" C. Hamilton2, after outgassing at 1850" C. for 100 min., was able to reach a base pressure of 0.001 mm. for a temperature of 1700&apos; to 1725" C. This would give a blank corresponding to less than 0.00015 per cent 02 and 0.00005 per cent H2. Chipman and Marshall outgas at 2000" C. for one hour by using a special construction

The Fifth Class, that of the OXIDES, is subdivided into three sections, according to the positive element present. The oxides of the non-metal silicon are placed by themselves, but it will be noted that the compounds of the related element titanium are included with those of the metals proper. This last is made necessary by the fact that in one of its forms TiOz is isomorphous with MnOp and PbOz. A series of oxygen compounds which are properly to be viewed as salts, e.g., the species of the Spinel Group and a few others, are for convenience also included in this class.

FoR the purpose of this paper all steels will be divided into two divisions: effervescing and non-effervescing. This classification must be borne in mind as many statements true of one class are not true of the other. Effervescing steels are those that effervesce in the molds, evolving large volumes of gases, which, in escaping, throw up a spray of molten particles of steel and give the molten metal in the mold a rapid stirring or churning motion until it freezes, or, at least, becomes pasty. This effervescing is intended and proper. The non-effervescing steels, which are more or less completely killed, should not evolve any gas in the molds. Many years ago the writer proposed to call the two classes of steels evolution and solution steels, depending on whether the gases in the molds are evolved or kept in solution, but the present designations seem to be better. In America, at least, effervescing steels are in a class by themselves and include steels made for boiler, tank, and ship plates, steel pipe, soft steel wire, wire nails, soft machincry, and structural steels. These are all low-carbon steels with less than 0.40 per cent. carbon. Low-carbon steels that do not effervesce but are killed are also made; these are put into ingots and castings but they are outside the limits of this paper. Effervescing steel is cast into square or slab molds, either top or bottom poured. Most of the effervescing steel is made in the basic open-hearth furnace, though much is made by the acid Bessemer process and a little is made in the acid open-hearth. It is not made by the crucible or electric-furnace process, in which the volume of gas required cannot be produced in the steel and evolved from it in the mold to give the effervescence desired. Any steel ingot, when teeming is finished, is of a certain size or volume. Leaving out of consideration for the moment the lessening of the over-all dimensions of the ingot through contraction due to loss of heat, the ingot may be placed in one of three classes: It may settle, losing in volume; it may stand, that is, remain constant in volume; it may rise, that is, increase in volume. THAT geology and mining should stand in close and mutually helpful relationship was recognized in the United States at an early period, but it is not possible to set a precise date at which the study of ore deposits became a thoroughly reputable and important branch of geological science. As early as 1850, appeared the first ,part of Foster and Whitney&apos;s report1 on the Lake Superior region, devoted mainly to the copper-bearing areas, followed, in the succeeding year, by the second part,2 on the iron lands. This appears to have been the first comprehensive report on what might, at that time at least, be called "western" ore deposits to be prepared and published under the auspices of the Federal government. An outgrowth from this work was Whitney&apos;s Metallic Wealth of the United States,3 which appeared in 1854. It was the earliest general work on the ore deposits of the country, and remained a standard reference book for marly forty years. From 1853 on, various parties were sent out by the War Department to explore routes for proposed railways and wagon roads from the Mississippi Valley to the Pacific Coast. Geologists were attached to most of these parties, but their work was mainly of broad reconnaissance character, little attention being paid to ore deposits. Although the

A previous study showed that up to 80% gold extraction could be obtained with 160 lbs/ton hypochlorite consumption at ambient temperature from a low grade Carlin-type carbonaceous ore. Crushing the ore to a finer size and agglomerating with cement decreases hypochlorite consumption by 60%; while, agglomeration and curing the cement-ore mixture with hypochlorite solution has no significant effect on total gold extraction. The high hypochlorite consumption is due to oxygen depletion as the solution percolates through the column, i.e., oxidation of gangue materials. These side reactions are reduced at sub-ambient temperatures resulting in a substantial further decrease in hypochlorite consumption. The optimum temperature range and additional reduction of hypochlorite consumption by introducing the reagent into the column at different elevations will be discussed.
