The Maggie Hays nickel sulphide deposit is located at latitude 32¦ 15 'S, longitude 120¦ 30' E on the Lake Johnston (SI 51-1) 1:250 000 map sheet. The deposit occurs in the Lake Johnston greenstone belt, in the Southern Cross Province of the Archaean Yilgarn Block, 500 kilometres east of Perth, Western Australia (Figure 1). The remoteness of the Lake Johnston greenstone belt and its poor access, restricted previous exploration activities and the full appreciation of the geology and its Ni-sulphide potential. It was not until 1991, when Forrestania Gold NL commenced exploration activities, that the geology of the ultramafic units and their potential to host significant concentrations of Ni sulphides were clearly established. This paper, which describes the geology and the characteristics of the Maggie Hays deposit, is based on the results of exploration by Forrestania Gold NL and a collaborative research agreement between CSIRO Division of Exploration and Mining and Forrestania Gold as reported by Perring, Barnes and Hill (1994), Perring and Hill (1995), Perring (1995 a and b) and Barnes, Perring and Reilly (1995). A comprehensive description of the geology, petrology and geochemistry of the deposit is being prepared for publication by CSIRO (Pemng, Hill and Barnes, in press).

Numerous investigatiolls have been carried out to determine the total oxygen present in the basic open-hearth bath and the results of these studies have clearly defined the factors controlling the bath oxidation during the period prior to deoxidation. On the other hand, very little is known concerning any changes in total oxygen content that may occur during deoxidation, tapping and teeming. The need for such additional data is continually becoming more apparent, since there is no strict technical basis for selecting any particular deoxidation practice. Many steels are made for the same purposes and to the same chemical analyses by widely differing practices. Apparently, each practice is satisfactory. However, it would be desirable to establish more definitely the effects and relative merits of the individual practices. Such information could be used to give a definite foundation for evaluating various types of deoxidation. In order to approach this problem, a study was made of the changes effected in the total oxygen content of several grades of steel by representative open-hearth deoxidation practices. To carry out such studies, it was necessary that a reliable testing procedure for determining the oxygen content of the steel bath and the ingot mold be established. Before entering on any extensive testing program, consideration was given to the available methods of obtaining steel samples and analyzing for oxygen. Testing Procedures It has been shown5-9 that in solidified steel oxygen may ekist in combination with iron, manganese, silicon, aluminum, titanium, chromium and carbon, depending upon the amount of these elements in the sample. In molten steel, however, there has been no direct distinction of the various oxides. Accordingly, the total active oxygen in the molten steel bath is designated by the symbol 0. During deoxidation, various oxides may be present either in solution in the molten steel or as solid or liquid inclusions. Any sample taken from the molten steel for oxygen analysis will include both the dissolved and the mechanically included oxygen. Similarly, samples of the solid steel product will also include the two forms of Oxygen' Methods of Samplirzg the Molten Steel Bath In order to obtain a true oxygen analysis from liquid steel, this element must be completely retained in the solidified sample. Several methods have been proposed whereby this stabilization can be effected. As early as 1915, Kichlinelo proposed a method for testing molten steel, in which the oxygen combined with some added aluminum. Flotation of low grade Ni ores with serpentinite host rock tend to yield low recoveries of Ni With high MgO contents in the concentrate. The recovery can be enhanced by optimizing the sub-processes in the pulp and in the froth. The new OF-100 flotation cell has been designed to be adaptable to different feed fineness (Coarse, Fine). The losses can according the research conducted at Outokumpu's Hitura plant be substantially decreased by OF-100's new rotor and stator design and froth zone geometry. The froth residence time is used to adapt for feed particle size changes measured by the Outokumpu PSI- 200. Models for the behaviour of different particle Sizes in the sub-processes have been developed. The modified froth zone geometry and the capability of maintaining a froth of desired thickness allows efficient washing of the obtained concentrate producing low levels of MgO.

The industrial grinding process has undergone changes to better address the market and economic needs. Fine grinding of dry materials has developed to the point where classifying linings and fine ball charges improve mill efficiencies. Roller mills as well have wide acceptance due to their power efficiencies. The mill, by its nature, cannot provide the specific particle size or range of sizes which are required for further processing or final use. Therefore, various separators are operated in conjunction with the mill to control particle size. The sizing device helps minimize over grinding and control top size. Rising energy costs combined with increasingly tighter quality specifications have led to increasing study of the grinding and separation process.

THIS paper will attempt to show how a metallurgical problem at one California quicksilver mine was solved, and how the solution was applied successfully at another mine. The pronouns "we" and "our," as used below, refer to the Bradley Mining Co. of San Francisco. The term "concurrent firing" for the purpose of this paper can be defined as feeding and firing a rotary kiln at the same end-that is, of course, the upper end. This is as opposed to "counter-current firing," the orthodox method, in which a kiln is fed at the upper and fired at the lower end. The terms "quicksilver" and "mercury" are used interchangeably. EARLY REFERENCES The earliest work on nonferrous metallurgy, we believe, was The Pirotechnia of Vannocio Biringuccio,1 its first edition having been printed in Italy in 1540. Quoting from its chapter entitled "Concerning Quicksilver and Its Ore": Quicksilver . . . is one of the gods and has divine strength in itself, and also, to the annoyance of the alchemists, it is winged. Hence, when it sees that it is in gravest danger, it loosens itself from . . . every bond . . . and flies away into the heavens, escaping from the hands of those who crucify it. Almost laughing, it leaves all its adversaries mocked and scorned, with their phials and filters empty . . . How thorough a job, under certain conditions, it can do of mocking its adversaries and leaving their phials and filters empty, was found out four centuries later at the Sulphur Bank mine, on the east shore of Clear Lake, in Lake County, California. The other mine mentioned in the title is the Reed, in Yolo County, California, 35 miles by road southeast of Sulphur Bank. Reed and Sulphur Bank ranked respectively fifth and seventh in U. S. production in 1943. The earliest direct reference we can find to furnacing troubles at these mines was by Thomas Egleston in 1890.2 Speaking of Sulphur Bank, Egleston says: Sometimes there is more sulphur than cinnabar in the ore, which is a detriment to both . . . making the sulphur impure, and rendering the cinnabar difficult to work on account of the soot. In some of the early . . . furnaces the accumulation of soot from the excess of sulphur has been known to penetrate as far as the fan blower at the end of the . . . condensers, and completely prevent its revolution. In order to get rid of the inconvenience of this accumulation . . . , as well as to get a commercial value from the sulphur, it (the sulphur) is now separated by steam and sold. It is claimed that the sulphur alone pays all the expenses of . . . the mine. The mine was first worked for sulphur, and the cinnabar it contained was considered to be an inconvenience, and was carefully picked out and thrown away. as its richness and value were not

Many of the rare-earth oxides are now commercially available in pure form and they have a variety of potential technical uses. Thermodynamic data for these oxides, however, are rather sparse. It is one of the functions of the Bureau of Mines to fill the need for this type of information. This report gives the results of low-temperature heat-capacity and high-temperature heat-content measurements by the Bureau of Mines of lanthanum sesquioxide. The entropy at 298.15° K. was evaluated and heat-content and entropy increments above 298.15° K. were obtained to 1,800° K. The results were combined with the known heat of formation at 298.15° K. to derive heats and free energies of formation at higher temperatures. Sufficient information is now available to permit reliable thermodynamic calculations involving lanthanum sesquioxide within the temperature range 298° to 2,000° K.

From research started six years ago, a new design criteria has been developed for mine roof bolt systems This design criteria precisely and quantitatively determines parameters such as bolt length, installed tension, and spacing that will produce the Optimum Beaming Effect (OBE) OBE, a new roof control term, is defined as the roof beam that has no separation above and within the bolted range with the shortest bolt passible Utilization of this design criteria has shown that in many cases shorter roof bolts with higher installed tension can produce a much stronger beaming effect (Stankus, 1995) This paper will first present a brief deception of how the design criteria was formulated From there, actual case studies where the design criteria was utilized will be discussed In conclusion, current and future research efforts will be presented

Lime, the versatile chemical is, generally speaking, a calcined or burned form of limestone commonly known as quicklime, calcium oxide or, when water is added, calcium hydroxide or slaked lime. Almost 40 different lime products are available, a fact which has contributed to the rather loose use of the term lime as well as to confusion and misunderstanding. The term is frequently, albeit erroneously, used to denote almost any kind of calcareous material or finely ground form of limestone or dolomite. Lime is made from high calcium or high magnesium limestone, generally having a minimum of 97% combined carbonate content. Normally, high calcium lime has less than 5% MgO. When the lime is produced from a high magnesium limestone, the product is referred to as dolomitic lime. Calcination/Hydration Calcination, or the production of lime, has its origins in the earliest days of alchemy, with the general reaction class having been identified in an Arabic text printed in 1000 AD. It was much later, however, in the mid-1700s to the mid-1800s before this basic reaction became understood from scientific perspective. The pro- duction of lime has been so basic and simple that its underlying scientific principles have over the years received only intermittent investigation. Rather, much of the thought and inquiry has been directed toward the development of kilns. Thus, it has only been in the last 25 to 30 years that lime has received any concentrated scientific investigation relative to the thermodynamics and kinetics of the calcination and hydration reactions. Particular emphasis has been focused upon energy consumption and fuel efficiency. Calcination refers to a broad class of reactions, of which the limeflimestone reaction is just one, wherein a substance is heated to less than its melting point, resulting is a weight gain or weight loss. In the calcination of limestone to produce lime, the basic chemical reaction is as follows: [ ] While there is nearly universal agreement bout the equilibrium conditions related to the limestone/lime reaction above, there have been numerous and varied calcination models developed for the reaction. Recent investigations have resulted in the development of the model shown in [Fig. 1]. From this model it can be seen that calcination is a function of both temperature and CO, pressure. It does not, however, provide any indication of the rate at which the reaction takes place. Calcination is strongly time variant with different limestones. In a very broad sense this relates to the fact that the calcination reaction starts on the exterior surface of the limestone and then proceeds toward the center. As the calcination reaction takes place, the CO2 released at the interface must make its way through the lime to the exterior surface. Since calcination is limited by gas diffusion to the surface of the partially calcined limestone, the natural impurities in the stone, differences in crystallinity, grain boundary chemistry, density variations, and imperfections in the atomic lattice all play a significant role in calcination rate. Therefore, the suitability of a given limestone as a source material for lime production can be determined only after completion of adequate burn tests designed to evaluate the various limiting factors. When a coal-fired kiln system is considered, the entire process of calcination is made even more complex by the introduction of additional chemical constituents into the calcination environment. The reader is referred to the references for a more detailed description of the complete calcination reaction and the differences inherent between differing kiln systems. In the foregoing discussion it was noted that CO2 is released during the reaction. This release results in a 44% weight loss during the complete calcination of a high calcium limestone, or a 48% weight loss for a highly dolomitic limestone. The trade term for this weight percent loss is loss on ignition, or LOI. This weight loss is frequently used as a measure of the completeness of calcination. Because the calcination reaction is chemically reversible, quicklime or burned lime is frequently referred to a being highly reactive, or unstable. The more stable form of lime, hydrated lime, is commonly preferred and generally specified by the user. Hydrated lime is obtained by adding water to quicklime to produce a dry, fine powder. Quicklime's affinity for moisture is then satisfied, although it still retains a strong affinity for CO2.

THE new low-alloy high-strength steels are obviously here to stay. With 75 per cent higher yield strength and 50 per cent higher tensile strength than plain carbon structural steel, they permit 20 to 40 per cent weight savings and 10 per cent or more increase in pay load in the con-struction of railroad cars, buses, trucks, and a great variety of material-handling equipment. Their cost is low enough so that the extra cost of the new lighter construction over that with carbon steel offers an attrac-tive self-liquidating investment; in some instances new construction with these low-alloy steels may even be as cheap as with plain carbon steel. A considerable and rapidly growing demand for the low-alloy steels has already sprung up. The many steel compositions that have appeared on the market lately 18,27,28,29,30 to meet this demand would seem to indicate that no single composition is uniquely fitted for the purpose. However, no doubt some compositions are more suitable than others. The purpose of this study was, therefore, to compare the effects of the various alloying elements that might be used in the low-alloy steels in order to choose the metallurgically most logical composition, paying due regard, of course, to the economic aspects involved.

Vaal Reefs Exploration and Mining Company Limited operates one of the largest producing gold mines in the world. The annual production of 76 tons of gold from 12 million tons of ore treated is obtained mainly from underground sources. Daily some 6.6 km of stope face is blasted and 41 tons of explosives is used to break the rock. The mine employs 45 000 men of whom 35 000 work underground. The company operates nine large vertical shaft systems of which seven extend more than 2000 m below surface and an eighth, currently being sunk, will bottom at 3700 m below surface.

The iron-ore ranges in the Lake Superior district are the liarquette in Michigan, Menominee and Gogebic in Michigan end Wisconsin, and the Vermilion, Mesabi, and Cuvuna in Minnesota. These ranges produce about 85 percent of the iron ore mined in the United States. Accident experience in connection with this production is better than that of the regions producing the remaining 15 percent. Production and shipments vary slightly from year to year but closely approximate each other over a period of years. During the 4-year period 1940 to 1943, inclusive, 323,667,599 long tons of iron ore was shipped from the Lake Superior district.4/ Michigan and Wisconsin shipped 65,386,608 tons, or 20.2 percent of the total, and employed approximately 15,000 men; Minnesota shipped 258,280,991 tons, or 79.8 percent of the total, and employed approximately 10,000 men. The tons produced per man employed is much, greater in Minnesota than in Michigan and Wisconsin owing to the large open-cut production in Minnesota.

The presence of radioactivity in uranium mill wastes has resulted in somewhat unique waste disposal methods. In addition to the common problems of disposing of large quantities of solid wastes, neutralizing acids, minimizing dissolved heavy metals, and clarifying all liquid effluents, the uranium mill operator must sample and analyze liquid effluents for micro-micro quantities of radionuclides such as, radium-226, thorium-230 and lead-210. Special disposal methods or decontamination procedures are required to meet the stringent limitations established by the U. S. Atomic Energy Commission on the concentration of radionuclides in liquid effluents. Routine monitoring of the receiving stream is also normally required. In recent years there has been a growing concern about the radioactivity remaining in the uranium mill tailings, particularly at the sites of shut-down or dismantled mills. The State of Colorado, in cooperation with the industry, has adopted regulations for stabilization of inactive uranium mill tailings. The Mining and Metals Division of Union Carbide operates mills for the recovery of uranium and vanadium at Uravan and Rifle in Colorado and a mill in the Gas Hills of Wyoming for uranium production. The company also owns former mill sites on which mill tailings are located at Maybell, Rifle, and Slick Rock in Colorado and at Green River, Utah. The purpose of this paper is to describe the methods used by a few uranium mills, largely those operated by Union Carbide Corporation, to dispose of radioactive wastes, to discuss briefly the regulations under which the mills operate, and to present reference information on the subject.

For several years the Fansteel Products Co. has been engaged in e production and development of various of the rarer metals. It is at present engaged in the commercial production of tantalum, tungsten, and molybdenum in a very high state of purity. The information contained in this paper is partly a general compilation from various sources and partly information obtained as a result of recent years of work in the laboratory of this company. Tantalum, tungsten, and molybdenum form a group peculiar to themselves among the commercially available metals. Their very high melting points (tantalum 2770' C., tungsten 3350' C., and molybdenum 2550" C.) set them apart so far as the metallurgical processes for their production are concerned. Further, when properly prepared and treated they will stand a somewhat unusual degree of cold work, that is work below the temperature at which marked crystal growth takes place. Such cold-worked metal may show a high tensile strength; tantalum to 130,000 lb. per sq. in., tungsten to 490,000 lb., and molybdenum to 260,000 lb., in the form of fine wire. In physical appearance, these metals are not unlike some steels; they may be better described by saying that polished tantalum somewhat resembles lead; polished tungsten, iron; and polished molybdenum, nickel. The polished surfaces of all three remain untarnished in ordinary air. Air containing corrosion-producing impurities will, in general, show molybdenum the least resistant to corrosion and tantalum the most resistant. Molybdenum has, however, a high degree of resistance to corrosion by hydrochloric acid, a property that should render it of commercial interest. On the other hand, it is markedly attacked by some of the weaker organic acids. The three metals oxidize rapidly when heated at or above a dull red in air. This feature limits their use in many applications where their high melting point and strength make them appear usable. Tungsten and molybdenum, at red heat, are quite inert to hydrogen and nitrogen; while tantalum has a rather remarkable affinity for all the ordinary gases, which results in its becoming embrittled in their presence. There is a misconception that mineral-project economic evaluations in the former Soviet Union are either nonexistent or very limited. This is not the case. In fact, there are at least two basic methods that can be utilized to evaluate the vast mineral resources of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). Evaluation procedures are based either on a comparison to known projects, which may rely on limited available data, or on potential-profit calculations, which generally uses more extensive databases. Significant philosophical differences between these systems and those utilized in the Western world include the following: •Under the centralized-government system, the economic evaluation of a mineral project was based on artificially determined mineral prices and costs. Every ten to 12 years, prices for concentrates and metals were established by the Council of Ministers and remained unchanged until the next reconsideration of prices .

The Explosives Division of the United States Bureau of Mines makes certain laboratory and field investigations that deal with explosions, explosives, ignition, and combustion, together with many related problems, such as the cause and prevention of fires, and certain fundamental scientific questions bearing upon the determination of the chemical and physical mechanisms underlying some of the important phenomena encountered. Its work on explosives has been particularly directed toward determination of the chemical and physical characteristics of explosives designed for use in coal mines and in a more limited way to those used in metal mines, tunnels, quarries, and other engineering operations. The Tamano Smelter of Hibi Kyodo Smelting CO. ,Ltd. went into operation in 1972. The Flash Smelting Furnace that was originally adapted was equipped with electrodes that were attached to the settler substitute of the slag cleaning furnace. Later the development of our own original coke combustion technology was promoted and a new Tamano Type Flash Smelting Furnace (T-FSF), without electrodes, was put into operation in 1988. The technology of coke combustion and combustion the burner have continued to improve. As a result the copper losses in the slag have been reduced as well as a stable operation has been achieved. Furthermore, this has been accomplished while increasing the concentration feed and the matte grade The current objective is to continue to strive for high matte grade operation and to raise production efficiency while paying attention to the important subject of copper losses in the slag. In this report, the data related to the copper loss in the slag reduction are presented along with the influence of the thickness, settling time and coke. The recent operation conditions of the T- FSF are also presented.
