The Angas Zinc Mine (Angas) is a poly-metallic, underground mine in the Adelaide Hills that has been developed through arguably one of the most volatile financial time periods in living memory. From boom times during the commencement of the project, the global financial crisis (GFC) through the stabilisation of the operating period and then a subdued capital market for the period where mine life extension was targeted, the financial environment has always presented a different set of challenges. Indeed even the Underground Operators’ Conferences that have been held across the span of the project allude to these changes: ‘Boom and Beyond’, Launceston (2008); ‘Safe, Innovative and Sustainable’, Canberra (2011) and ‘Managing the Margin’ in Adelaide (2014).Angas gives a rare opportunity to see the entire life-of-mine of a project and its economic performance within a relatively short time frame. Angas, owned and operated by Terramin Australia Ltd (Terramin), will have undergone resource estimation drill out, feasibility study, permitting, commissioning, operating and completion and rehabilitation all within a period of approximately ten years. A number of sensitivities of the project were tested, particularly in the bankable feasibility study (BFS) stage and the aim of this paper is to identify the factors that impacted the operations profitability the most, whether they were identified preproduction or not. The key sensitivities assessed in the BFS were typical of similar studies, including operating costs, metal recoveries, capital costs, zinc prices, lead prices and exchange rates. The manner in which these sensitivities presented themselves in real life were not as anticipated and modelled in the feasibility study and were also heavily impacted by technical challenges.CITATION:Harris, A, Laughton, K and Ranford, J, 2014. Recent developments in portable communication equipment for use in emergency recovery work following mine fires and explosions have wade possible a convenient and dependable means of directing rescue teams working under hazardous conditions. INTRODUCTION Mine rescue and recovery operations following; fires and explosions are frequently conducted under adverse conditions that require the use of oxygen breathing apparatus by members of a 5- or 6-man team. Conventional apparatus used for this purpose for many years was equipped with an oxygen supply adequate for at least 2 hours. The design of the apparatus is such that the nose passages are closed with a clamp, and breathing is accomplished through a mouthpiece connected to the apparatus by tubes and arranged to prevent inhaling air or gases from outside sources. The use of the mouthpiece has presented difficulties in the development of telephone communication because of the wearer's inability to speak while wearing the mouthpiece. The method of conducting operations of rescue teams requires a person to direct operations at a fresh-air base as close to the rescue team as possible. At least one standby rescue team and 2 or 3 other persons assigned to various tasks are stationed at the fresh-air base. An efficient and reliable means of communication between the director of operations and the rescue team is necessary for reasonably safe and efficient work in hazardous areas.

INFORMATION regarding the use of manganese alloys has hitherto been incomplete and available only from widely scattered sources. This paper attempts a systematic description of properties and uses of alloys other than manganese bronze, manganin and duralumin, which are probably the only non-ferrous alloys associated with manganese in the minds of most metallurgists.1 PROPERTIES OF MANGANESE Manganese can react either acid or basic; it is hard to obtain in the pure state; it has two different crystalline lattice structures, both of the cubic system, one stable above 850° C. and the other below 650° C., both coexisting in the intermediate range. Although the commercial product is hard and brittle, the pure metal seems to be ductile. In fact Zhemchuzhny, in Russia, was able to obtain ductile manganese and draw it to fine wires by the simple expedient of adding about 3 per cent. copper to the alumino-thermic product. Copper most probably brings the sili-cides, aluminides, nitrides and carbides present in the commercial product into a much less harmful form of distribution. One industrial use that can be foreseen for wrought manganese articles is as anodes for electrolytic processes in sulfate and nitrate solutions, particularly with high voltages. A practically insoluble skin of manganese peroxide is likely to form in such cases and an insoluble and strong anode material will be available.

An analysis of bolting reinforcement of several large [approximately 18 m (60 ft) cube] pillars was performed. The many overcoring stress profiles in pillars at the mine were used to produce generalized stress distributions at various stages in pre- and post-failure. A complete stress-deformation curve was estimated from this data. The effect of pillar bolting on the load-deformation behavior was extrapolated from the observed unbolted behavior. Bolting can increase pillar strength by up to 10 percent. The effect of bolting on general mine stability was examined with a shoW computer analysis. The computer model was calibrated against measurements performed at the mine, and produced good agreement between measured and modeled stresses. The analysis indicated that bolting increases the bolted pillar safety factors in the event of additional pillar failure by a small amount (approximately 5 percent). Progressive pillar failure is unlikely, because arching transfers most load from yielding pillars to large unmined abutments rather than to the smaller panel pillars.

The determination of the governing step of the deoxidation rate and the effects of the hydrogen content of the mixtures (C), the diameter of the delivery orifice (4) and the Reynolds number of the orifice (Re.) on the product Av kjg were investigated. A,, is the total surface area of the interface between the bubbles and the melt and kjg is the mass transfer coefficient in the gas phase. The design of the experiments was based on a two level statistically fractionated, factorial planning. Oxygen in the melt was measured as a function of time. It was found that the governing step of the deoxidation rate was the transport of hydrogen in the gaseous phase and that {Ay kjg} increases with C, {o} and Reo.

Today's coal mines are turning more and more to belt haulage as the key system to transport coal out of the mine. The advantages of using belt for both intermediate and main haulage are numerous. Belts are reliable high capacity haulage mediums that can be utilized at low operating costs. They are adaptable to rolls in the coal seam and can handle relatively steep grades. They are not noisy, operate with a minimum amount of labor, and are easily extended and retracted. Belts require the least power of any haulage medium, are easily controlled by push- buttons and interlocks, and present low fire and safety hazards. Belt haulage can also be the largest source of operational problems for mine management when not installed correctly. This chapter and Chap. 6 concentrate on proper installation of both the static and dynamic components of efficient belt haulage. This chapter looks at the static system component, composed of the belt drive, its installation and operation, as well as belt takeup and transfer point construction. These components do not change readily over the life of the installation, hence the term static system. Chap. 6 discusses the dynamic system of belt line construction, which includes belt splicing, breaking down and reanchoring the tailpiece, and extending the belt line, plus operational and maintenance items for belt operation. This chapter is divided into three major topics. The first is a general discussion covering the points necessary for designing an efficient haulage system; the second looks at installing belt drives, head rollers, and takeups, and the third discussion centers on installing efficient and effective transfer points along the haulage system. Each will address the design and construction issues facing the engineer or construction supervisor in charge of installing the system. Before looking at the static system, it may be useful to review some of the basic design factors and considerations of all belt haulage systems. The material usually carried on an underground belt is a mixture of raw coal and rock, commonly known as run-of-mine (ROM) coal. This mixture has certain material characteristics that guide the mining engineer to the final and proper belt selection. The characteristics looked at most frequently are: 1) Angle of Repose is the angle at which the material will freely make a pile. Most ROM coal averages a 35"-39" angle of repose. 2) Angle of Surcharge is the angle a pile will assume on a moving conveyor. This ranges from 5" to 15" less than the angle of repose in most materials. For ROM coals, 25" is the average angle of surcharge. 3) Flowability, which determines the maxi- mum cross-sectional area needed to carry any given material on a belt. It is measured by the angles of repose and surcharge of a material and also serves as an index of the safe incline angle for the belt line. These characteristics, plus practical engineering research and development work are defined by an organization called the Conveyor Equipment Manufacturers Association (CEMA) for most bulk materials. CEMA also provides a code for each classified material depending on the characteristics above and the subjective considerations of the average size to be encountered, the abrasiveness of the material, and any miscellaneous characteristics (oil resistive, corrosive, etc.) which may be important. Except for the work of Guillet, who conducted a systematic investigation on the zinc-replacing value of nickel in brass, and extended his investigation with a view to developing commercial high zinc content nickel brasses, the author does not know of any other systematic research on the subject. The most promising commercial alloys and their physical properties obtained by Guillet are given below: These test results scarcely justify the use of such quantities of so expensive a metal, and could have been obtained from ordinary commercial brass. For purposes of comparison, the physical properties of ordinary brasses, ranging from 70 per cent. to 50.1 per cent. Cu in both the cast and normalized1 conditions are included in 'Table 1. These incidentally furnish a useful standard of the properties of castings and of rolled, extruded and forged brass when correctly annealed. A close study of some of the well-known special brasses containing nickel reveals a series of alloys which bewilder by their complexity, and me can only hazard a guess at the function and commercial value of each of the many elements used.

The Pooncarie Project is located in the Murray Basin region of Australia. This region is a potential new mineral sands province. Due to the geological environment and the lithology of the deposit, these deposits have some technical challenges that need to be addressed prior to their successful development. Within the Pooncarie Project the Ginkgo deposit will be developed first. The technical challenges it presents include its geographical isolation, the requirement to remove substantial quantities of overburden as well as the processing issues raised by the highly weathered nature of the ilmenite family of minerals. Ore characterization bench scale testwork and bulk sample pilot plant programmes have been carried out and the data obtained used to design flowsheets for both the wet plant and mineral separation plant circuits with the flexibility to enable these plants to handle the variable heavy mineral assemblage. In addition to the solving of the processing challenges, technical issues such as removal of overburden for the minimum unit cost, the use of hyper saline water in the dredge pond and the provision of infrastructure, have had to be addressed. None the less, the orebodies making up the Pooncarie Project have many positive features including low slimes content, good rutile and zircon grades and the ability to recover most of the ilmenite family of minerals into acceptable TiO2pigment feedstocks. The development of the project is set to proceed with the establishment of mining operations on the Ginkgo orebody feeding a mineral separation plant at Broken Hill. The initial shipment of products is expected to occur in early 2005.

Lithoprobe is a collaborative, multidisciplinary research project which is providing new insights into the tectonic evolution of the North American continent through its work within ten study areas across Canada. For the mining industry, such results provide a well-constrained regional framework and better understanding of tectonic processes which lead to the development of ore deposits. In mining camps, seismic reflection methods have proven effective in imaging shallow to moderately dipping litho logic contacts as well as structural features, and in some cases have been used for the direct detection of ore bodies. Here, short case histories are provided for the Abitibi greenstone belt (VMS deposits) in Quebec and the Thompson nickel belt in Manitoba.

The Bureau of Mines in its safety work has for a number of years advocated and recommended the use of permissible portable electric cap lamps for use in all mines. In the course of time required for the evolution from an unsatisfactory to an efficient and safe light, but encouraging increase in their use has been experienced in Alabama. As early as 1916, small installations of these safer lamps were made or an experimental basis by several operating companies, and the first complete mine installation eras made at the Virginia mine of the Gulf States Steel Co., July 1, 1918. From the experiments in 1316 and the complete equipment of the first mine in 1918 gradual progress has been made until there are now 30 installations with 10 operating companies; as a result 20 mines have been put entirely and 5 partly on, closed lights, and 3 companies equip their engineering departments; two installations of closed lights are maintained by other companies for emergency use. One of the mines partly on the electric cap lamp is an ore mine - the only one in Alabama (and one of the very few in the United States) that uses closed lights. In a recent article,l which described the softening effect of columbium in plain high-chromium steels, the authors stated that their investigations had shown columbium to be also a particularly valuable inhibitor of intergranular corrosion in steels of the 18 per cent chromium, 8 per cent nickel type. It is the purpose of the present paper to record some of the results obtained through the introduction of columbium to the austenitic chromium-nickel steels. The damaging effects of this type of corrosion have become so widely known as to restrict considerably the applications of the steels under consideration, and therefore there is little question of the importance of the goal to be attained. Numerous contributions concerning the susceptibility of the austenitic chromium-nickel steels to intergranular corrosion have appeared during the past few years, and among others who have dealt constructively with the subject are such well-known authors as Strauss and Houdremont of Germany, Hatfield of England, and Bain in the United States. Different theories have been propounded as to the cause of intergranular corrosion, and various remedial measures have been proposed, the majority of which involve the use of addition agents. Titanium is the addition agent at present most generally employed, as suggested by Houdremont and modified as described by Bain, Aborn and Rutherford. Little has been published on the effects of holding these steels for long periods at the relatively lower temperatures in the presence of corroding media, and the effects have mot been fully realized by producer and consumer.

A survey of all phases of the world's lead and zinc production in 1968 from ore through to refined metal was conducted by sending questionnaires to individual companies and the results of this survey are tabulated at the end of the paper. The paper goes on to review changes in the geographical distribution of the world's lead and zinc mine and metal production and in the trading patterns of raw materials, present and future utilization of metal production capacity, developments in metal smelting and refining processes and the growing importance of marketing, product development and research in the 1950's and 1960's.

Scientists at the U.S. Bureau of Mines are studying iron aluminides as possible substitutes for stainless steels to reduce the Nation's dependence on imported strategic and critical materials. In a Bureau investigation on the mechanical properties of Fe-28Al, it was found that the material's machining properties were significantly improved at slow tool and feed speeds. Machining techniques normally used for brittle materials failed or were costly. Further experiments using a 5-in (12.7-cm) mill cutter with carbide inserts, operating dry at minimum machining speeds, produced visually smooth sample surfaces with no tool damage. As a result of these experiments and a review of published data on hydrogen embrittlement of iron aluminide under tension, non-water-based (e.g., sulfur-based) lubricants were chosen for production machining. Four-flute, 3/4-in (19-mm) carbide end mills were used at slow speed under lubrication. This latter procedure reduced tool wear and breakage by a factor of 2. Machined surfaces and specimen cross sections were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy to detect microcracking. Tensile tests gave the expected yield and ultimate strengths, indicating that no degradation by low-speed machining occurred. This study extends this work to show that the alloy can be machined at higher speeds using high-speed steel end mills, and that water-soluble cutting oil is a suitable lubricant and coolant.

The need for ground support research in underground excavation has been well identified in recent years by many studies in the subject area (1, 2, 3, 4, 5). A typical conclusion from these reports (1, 2) is that the drill-and-blast (D & B) mining or the mechanical tunnel boring machine (TBM) methods are expected to be continued in use for the needs of tunneling in the immediate future. The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) sponsored in June, 1970 advisory conferences on Hardrock and Soft Ground Tunneling (3,4). These two reports were based on the combined response received from approximately six hundred inquiries from 17 nations in the summer of 1969 and which concerned all aspects of present-day inadequacies of, and the needed improvements in the technology of tunneling. Some specific problem areas in ground support and tunnel linings were: 1) the ability to successfully predict rock loads that must be carried by the support system; and 2) inadequate methods for determining the load-carrying capacity of the various support systems. Therefore, the problem area is clearly defined by these two objectives: 1) To find means of predicting rock loads; and 2) To develop methodology for determining safe, efficient, and economical ground support design practices. Noting these research needs from a great number of sources, the United States Bureau of Mines, Spokane Mining Research Center (SMRC), acting as agent for the Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA), undertook contract research effort in these problem areas. Work by Jacobs Associates has studied a methodology for specification of temporary artificial support based on the dependent sequence of mining operations and prediction of various rock conditions in the pre-excavation stage. IN the manufacture of portland cement, the basic and fundamental essential is a limestone uniformly rich in calcium carbonate and carrying less than 3 per cent magnesium carbonate. In searching for such a deposit, also having in mind quantity of rock, accessibility and quarrying facilities, the Pacific Coast Cement Co. discovered and developed its present quarry at View Cove on the east coast of Dall Island, Alaska. Dall Island is about 100 miles west of Ketchikan and 650 miles north from Seattle. It is 70 miles in length and 5 to 10 miles in width. The climatic conditions are much more favorable than would be expected. The temperature ranges from zero to 70 degrees. The precipitation is considerably more than at Seattle, although there was less snow during the last season than at Seattle. The island is rugged and mountainous; the vegetation is moss and grass and a large portion is timbered with spruce, hemlock and cedar. Some of this timber has market value. The limestone quarry is about 30 miles north of the extreme southern end of the island. The company acquired 240 acres which contain limestone of remarkable uniformity, the percentage of calcium carbonate being about 95. It is estimated that there is ample recover- able rock on the holdings to supply the cement plant at its maximum capacity for well over 100 years.

Many engineering functions such as surface metering work and laboratory compressibility check points involve the use of liquid densities of light hydrocarbon mixtures at various pressures and temperatures. However, at the present time, no simple reliable method exists for determining density variation, particularly if the composition of the liquid is unknown. Consequently, a study was undertaken to develop and present a simple and accurate method of predicting density variation of a light hydrocarbon liquid with pressure and temperature, knowing only the density of the liquid at some condition. The experimental liquid compressibility data from API Project 37 by Sage and Lacey' have been considered to be accurate within 0.5 per cent and cover a wide range of pressure (14.7 to 10,000 psia), temperature (100" to 400°F) and molecular weight (up to 150). From these data, a set of liquid density curves, which relate density to pressure, temperature and molecular weight, was developed. These curves make it possible to predict density variation with pressure and temperature. Compared to extensive laboratory compressibility data on a complex, light hydrocarbon liquid, the use of the liquid density curves resulted in an average error of less than 0.5 per cent. Based on the results of this analysis, it is concluded that the set of liquid density curves developed from the data of Sage and Lacey provides an accurate and simple method for predicting the density variation of light hydrocarbon liquids when the density at some condition is known. These curves should be very helpful in many engineering calculations, particularly in the surface metering of light hydrocarbon liquids. INTRODUCTION Many situations arise in field and engineering laboratory work, such as reservoir engineering studies, check of experimentally determined laboratory data and orifice flow-meter formulas, where liquid density factors at various pressure-temperature conditions are required. Also, the need for accurate light hydrocarbon liquid information has become more important with the advent of miscible-type displacements for secondary recovery purposes in oilfield operations. Several reliable methods are available1 - "or determining the density of liquid hydrocarbons if the composition of the liquid is known. However, there is a definite lack of methods for accurately determining the variation of density when the composition of the liquid is unknown. The purpose of this study is to review the various methods for determining hydrocarbon liquid densities and to develop a simple and reliable method of determining variation in density of light hydrocarbon liquids with pressure and temperature when the compositio~n of the liquid is unknown. METHODS FOR DETERMINING DENSITY OF LIQUIDS OF KNOWN COMPOSITION Sage, Lacey and Hicks' have proposed a method to predict the density of light liquid hydrocarbons by using partial molal volumes. Data are available on experimentally developed partial liquid volumes of hydrocarbons over a rather limited range of temperature, pressure and composition. The partial mold volume method has proved satisfactory for determining the density of some hydrocarbon liquids when the composition is known. Within the range covered in the Sage, Lacey and Hicks1 data, the results agree within about 3 per cent of the experimental values. Hanson mentions the limitation of this method to a composition range of approximately 10 per cent by weight of methane, which will not allow this correction to cover most low molecular weight-light hydrocarbon liquids. Standing and Katz2 studied data on light hydrocarbon-liquid systems containing methane and ethane at high temperature and pressure and have presented a method for determining liquid densities, assuming additive volumes for all components less volatile than ethane and using apparent densities for methane and ethane. The compressibility and thermal-expansion curves used by Standing are based on assumptions that compressibility of a hydrocarbon liquid at temperatures below 300°F is a function of the liquid density at 60°F and that thermal expansion of the liquid is affected little by pressure. The information required to use this technique with an example problem is furnished by Standing.' Hanson eports an average error of - 0.5 per cent using the method of apparent densities in calculating liquid densities of several volatile hydrocarbon mixtures. 8.5-1. Bucket Line Dredge. INTRODUCTION. The modern bucket-line dredge for mining placer deposits is a combined floating excavating machine and a gravity concentration system. Material is excavated at the forward end by the buckets, elevated, washed and screened, concentrated for recovery of valuable mineral, and discharged off the stern as coarse and small fractions. The end product is a concentrate consisting either of the valuable mineral(s) and associated heavy minerals, which are taken to a treatment plant on shore; or in the case of gold, a clean amalgam ready for retorting. The bucket-line dredge may be adapted for purposes other than mining for valuable mineral by installing, in lieu of a concentrating system, machinery for pumping all of the solids ashore in a pulp, or for producing washed gravel in selected size fractions of which all or a selected fraction is pumped to disposal areas on shore or into side barges. The two principal types of bucket-line dredges designed for mining are: 1) those having an inclined belt conveyor stacker to discharge the coarse fraction of washed tailing well astern of the hull, and sluices to discharge the sand fraction (Fig. 8.5-1), and 2) those having only sluices for discharge of all tailing astern. Use of the latter type has been confined, with few exceptions, to mining cassiterite-bearing deposits in Malaysia and at sea off Indonesia. Small dredges having only flumes for washing and concentrating all material dug by the buckets have been used for mining shallow stream valley deposits. GENERAL ARRANGEMENT. The general arrangement of a modern bucket-line dredge for mining tin, with a primary concentrating plant on board, is shown in Fig. 8.5-2. The hull and superstructure of most dredges are fabricated of structural steel; wood also has been used for both small and large dredges with complete satisfaction. The principal object of an underground coal mine transportation system is to move coal from the face where it is produced to the outside of the mine where it is prepared for market. In addition to the movement of coal, a transportation system must also move supply materials to the inside ; it must move men in and out of the mine ; and it must move rock and other debris out of the mine for disposal. Usually, mine haulage is divided into three categories named for the various areas of the mine served : 1) Pace Haulage. This is used at face from the mining machine to the intermediate transport system. 2) Intermediate or Secondary Haulage. Generally this is used between face haulage and main haulage. Sometimes this is merely an extension of the main haulage. 3) Main Haulage. This extends from the secondary haulage to the outside and is usually either a track or conveyor system, sometimes a combination of both. Transportation modes of coal in the various areas pose different problems, but the whole system must be synchronized. For instance, at the face the coal should be removed quickly from the various places to facilitate the movement of machines, whereas the intermediate system just passes the same coal on to the main transportation system. Selection of the transportation system must be based on the seam height, mining methods used to extract the coal, capacity required, ease of coal handling, and haulage efficiency. When driving rooms, mine cars can be used. They often simplify supply haulage and rock handling because they can also handle these items. Conveyors could be used and would have a greater haulage capacity but they cannot handle supplies easily or segregate the rock. When using a different mining method, such as longwall, mine cars cannot be used because there is not sufficient space to move the cars at the face nor can the cars haul the coal without delays which would cause excessive losses in production. It directs all federal agencies to identify and develop methods and procedures so that environmental parameters and values will be given equal consideration in the decision-making process, along with economic and technical parameters. Section 102 of the Act directs, among other things, that all agencies will submit a detailed statement on: (1) the environmental impact of the proposed action, (2) any adverse environmental effects which cannot be avoided should the proposal be implemented, (3) alternatives to the proposed action, (4) the relationship between local short term uses of man's environment and the maintenance and enhancement of long term productivity, (5) any irreversible and irretrievable committments of resources which would be involved in the proposed action should it be implemented. Passage of this act has been followed by other legislation, both federal and state. The Water Quality Act of 1970 puts teeth into the previously existing Federal Water Pollution Control Act by requiring a "certificate of reasonable assurance that the activity licensed will not violate the applicable water quality standards." The Clean Air Act of 1970 requires that the Environ- mental Protection Agency establish national air quality standards, as well as standards for significant new pollution sources.
