"The paper describes current 'tools' available to the coal preparation engineer for carrying out the evaluation of data, process design, selection of equipment and layout and design of coal preparation plants.Laboratory and pilot-scale equipment is widely available and test data can be used to provide valuable design information regarding capacities and sizing for specific applications. Pilot plants, unless they fit closely to the basic design envisaged for the eventual commercial plant, C(In often provide only limited useful information.Computing aids such as equipment simulation, plant modelling, etc. are becoming widely applied for establishing design criteria and investigating flowsheet options . Other computer tools such as computer-aided design systems are taking over some of the time-consuming tasks of detailed layout and design and estimation of quantities, etc. and providing the means for detailed examination of more than a single option.Besides computer modelling there is also physical modelling of plant buildings, plant sites and entire proposed mining areas; the former can be especially useful in finalizing design and threading' pipework and electrical reticulation systems through the plant without the resultant risk of impairment of flow, obstruction or wastefulness. Not the least of the benefits of plant models is the assistance provided for training new operating and maintenance staff."

"A solid sulfur is more useful to recover and store than a sulfuric acid as a by-product in the zinc hydrometallurgy. In this experiment a zin concentrate (sphalerite) was leached with ferric sulfate at about 373 K for 3 to 6 hours. Zinc was leached more than 95%. After a solid-liquid separation, the leached residue contained solid sulfur was obtained. The particles in the residue were dispersed by lignin and the solid sulfur of approximately 85% was recovered as float product by a flotation with frother in the pH 4. The dried float product was heated at 413K for 2 hours. The pure solid sulfur was recovered. On the other hand in the leached liquid a zinc oxide was ·added and ferrous .iron was oxidized to ferric iron by blowing oxygen. This ferric iron was returned to the zinc leached process after solid-liquid separation.IntroductionZinc concentrate is usually roasted as pretreatment in zinc hydrometallurgy and the produced S02 is changed to sulfuric acid. However, recently in Japan the utilization of sulfuric acid has been limited and it is more costly to store. Instead of producing sulfutic acid the solid sulfur recovery has been examined by direct leaching of zinc_ concentrate in this experiment.In the direct leaching, several kinds of effects have been studied for leaching of sphalerite in ferric sulfate solution. The addition of lignine siilfonate1 • 2) and fine· grinding3) increases the · speed arid leaching fraction of sphalerite. The leaching ratio depends on impurities in sphalerite ores4 • 5). Here, the zinc concentrate is leached ferric sulfate solution under atmospheric pressure at 373K. The solid sulfur in leached residue is separated as float products from other solids by sink-float separation and flotation. The sulfur in float products is purified by evaporation at 413K and recovered."

An experimental study on the oxidation of chalcopyrite (CuFeS2), pyrite (FeS2), covellite (CuS) and chalcocite (Cu2S) particles was conducted by means of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) techniques. Oxygen concentration in the process gas was set to 40 and 70% by vol. and a heating rate of 40 °C/min was used. Response variables included: the temperature of incipient reaction, the total exothermic heat of reaction, particle mass, morphology, and mineralogy of the reacted particles. Based on the experimental data and phase stability calculations, reaction mechanisms were proposed to represent the behavior of the particles during oxidation. The reaction mechanisms were verified by X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses of the oxidized particles, and by thermochemical and mass balance calculations to reproduce the DSC and TGA thermograms. Overall kinetic models were developed to represent the evolution of the exothermic heat of reaction for each mineral as a function of time. Experiments conducted with copper concentrate particles containing the minerals studied suggest that the reaction mechanisms for the individual minerals can be used to represent the oxidation behavior of the copper concentrate particles.

Domestic cobalt resources are relatively large, but low grade. The full potential for cobalt production from domestic sources is at least 19.4 million lb of cobalt per year exclusive of offshore resources. A summary of the cobalt processing technologies for the major domestic resources is presented in this Bureau of Mines report. The processing technologies for the Blackbird, Madison Nine, Duluth Gabbro, iron ore pyrite, laterites, and manganese sea nodules are nearly complete, but the economics are not favorable. Research on these resources should be limited to approaches that promise to cut the total processing costs by at least 50 pct. The most promising sources of cobalt are the spent copper leach solutions and siegenite from the Missouri lead ores. Research on cobalt processing from these two sources needs to be completed.

This Bureau of Mines report describes the development and application of a computer model of aquifer hydrology associated with in situ leaching of uranium. The model provides uranium resource developers with a simulation of leachant flow characteristics in a preproduction or pilot five-spot leaching operation. Various types of aquifers are modeled using closed form solutions of the partial differential equations describing the change in fluid head (pressure) as the leaching operation is carried out. User-supplied descriptive input consists of aquifer, well, and leachant flow characteristics. Numeric and graphic outputs such as isopressure, iso-velocity, and isotime contours are available. A typical application is shown.

"There is considerable evidence that all mine dusts do not present the same health hazard. Rank of coal and composition, especially silica content of the mine dust, shape, and surface charge are risk factors that affect the incidence and severity of CWP. Current efforts of Center researchers involve characterization of:•,size/shape/composition•,surface and functional groups•,particle interactions.Work is underway to prepare and characterize respirable coal dust samples, and to develop and evaluate techniques and procedures for the characterization of respirable dust. A suite of standard samples including anthracite, medium volatile and high volatile bituminous coals, quartz, clay, and rock dust have been prepared and thoroughly characterized with respect to the distributions of particle size and compositions. A comparison of the morphology of the standard dust particles with similar particles collected in an underground coal mine is given in Figure 43. Samples of these characterized (Standard) dusts have been distributed among various research groups associated with the Center.The aerodynamic diameter of a particle is a particularly important characteristic since this parameter determines the point of deposition in the human respiratory tract. A 3-dimensional numerical model for theoretically determining the equivalent aerodynamic diameter of irregular shaped particles has been developed and used to analyze coal dust particles and a particle shadowing technique has been developed for .experimental 3-dimensional shape analysis (Figure 44). In the theoretical technique, the equivalent aerodynamic diameter of the particle is numerically determined from computation of the fluid drag on the particle. This allows the aerodynamic diameter of any regular or irregular shaped particle to be determined as a function of the particle's orientation or as an average over all particle orientations. The technique is quite accurate in that the aerodynamic diameter of several coal dust particles have been numerically determined to be within 5% of experimentally measured values."

"Most unconformity-type uranium deposits in Saskatchewan occur within a few tens of metres above and/or below the basal unconformity of the 1,45-b.y. Athabasca Sandstone. Graphitic basement rocks coincident with post-Athabasca faulting or brecciation at or near the unconformity are important in localizing uranium deposits which form as tabular, ribbon-like bodies with grades averaging over 2 per cent uranium and containing up to 50,000 tonnes UJOs. Some of these deposits have similar contents of nickel and arsenic.In the genetic model proposed to explain these deposits, traces of uranium were leached from the sandstone and weathered basement rocks by oxidized formation waters sweeping through the sandstone and along brecciated faults. Over basement meta-petites, a thick clay regolith adsorbed uranium from the solution. Thus fixed, the uranium was reduced through an indirect reaction with graphite, possibly involving methane. The clay mineral surfaces were thus continuously cleared to allow further adsorption. Basement faults localized along weak graphitic units were re-activated, offsetting the sandstone formation, probably at the time of an early uranium deposition about 1.2 b.y. ago, and served as vents for spent ore solutions. Fluid convection was induced by topographic relief and/or crustal heating from radioactive decay in basement plutons or mantled Archean domes with uranium and/or thorium contents a few ppm above those of adjacent rocks. Heat from radioactive decay within the incipient uranium deposit would develop in about a million years. The self-generating convection cell would continue uranium deposition until all permeability was plugged by minerals. In some instances, convection was re-initiated after subsequent faulting and brecciation. While some deposits were further enriched, heavy flows of oxidized fluids re-dissolved and partially depleted other uranium deposits.The East Alligator Rivers uranium deposits in Northern Territory, Australia, occur within Middle Proterozoic quartzchlorite and quartz-muscovite schists overlain by sandstone. Highest grades occur in silicified breccias where carbonate beds were leached out. Mineralization ages are both pre- and post-Kombolgie Sandstone, but, to date, no significant uranium mineralization has been encountered in the sandstone. There are many general similarities with Saskatchewan deposits, but important differences in detail."

INTRODUCTION In the past three decades, world trade has grown from less than $100 billion per year in the years following World War 11 to slightly more than $300 billion in 1970 and over $2,000 billion in the early 1980s. Adjusted for inflation, the real growth of world trade in 1972 dollars increased from less than $175 billion per year in the early 1950s to slightly more than $342 billion in 1970 and almost $700 billion per year by the early 1980s. Thus trade as a whole has increased a little more than twofold in real terms in the past decade." Mineral commodities constituted approximately 20% of the value of total world trade in 1970, and significantly more than that proportion in terms of physical volume. By 1980, de- spite rapidly rising petroleum prices, mineral commodities accounted for roughly 18% of the total value of world trade. Crude oil alone ac- counted for about 16%, making it the single most important commodity in international trade. The worldwide recession of 198 1- 1983 brought a dramatic decline in both volume and price of crude oil, shrinking the impact of mineral commodities to roughly 10% of the value of total exports, worldwide, in 1982- 1983. The decline of mineral commodities as a pro- portion of the value of world trade in the decade 1970- 1980 is due largely to the increasing importance of manufactured goods and consumer products such as automobiles and electronic items. During this period, mineral commodity trade expanded roughly sixfold in terms of current dollars to an estimated $350 to 360 billion in 1980. This was equivalent to doubling the real value of mineral commodities in international trade in the 1970- 1980 period in constant dollars. The U.S. Bureau of Mines has expanded the traditional definition of mineral commodities to include semifinished products such as iron and steel (in addition to iron ore), refined metals such as copper, lead, zinc, aluminum, and tin, concentrates, scrap, and petroleum products. Since large quantities of essentially mineral derivatives travel in this form, it is reasonable to use these expanded definitions in stating the role of minerals in world trade. Thus minerals in world trade comprise 30 to 33% of total export trade in all commodities during the period 1976- 1980 (see Table 1.3.1). In addition, the U.S. Bureau of Mines estimates the value of all mineral commodities consumed in the world (at the national level) and compares this value to total worldwide commodity consumption. By this system, mineral commodities range from 30 to 40% of all commodities consumed each year in all countries during the period 1976- 1980 (see Table 1.3.2). The growth in export trade in mineral commodities by commodity group is shown for the period 1976-1980 in Table 1.3.3. These data parallel the swings in worldwide economic activity during the same time period. The metallurgical balance is a tool usually applied in the mining industry. The final result is used for different objectives. All the existing software for the calculation of the metallurgical balance fits the numbers in such way that a logical correspondence between the input and output materials exist. Nevertheless, the accuracy of the metallurgical balance strongly depends on the quality of the input data. Division El Teniente of Codelco Chile has been optimizing the metallurgical balance system the last 14 years. As well, it has participated in the development of corporate norms to optimize the operations of sampling and weighting systems. As a consequence, the precision and the accuracy of the metallurgical balance have been improved in a significant way. Also the understanding of process variability was enhanced. The improvements have allowed Codelco to discover and minimize hidden losses and to better support top management decisions. The present paper describes the main aspect of the continuous improvement process.

THE application of aerial photographs to all phases of geologic mapping is set forth, indicating the advantages to be gained in different types of country and under varying climatic conditions. Methods of field and office procedure are given from a geological point of view, as well as suggestions regarding the best methods of aerial mapping for different uses and under varying field conditions, including the study of submarine geology. Aerial photographs with accompanying geologic maps are shown to illustrate the appearance from the air of different geologic features under varying climatic and topographic conditions.

Draglines 8.2-1 Introduction. The nature and characteristics of rock and rock derivatives forming the crust of the earth vary so greatly from place to place that it is impossible to use the same numerical factors to show the, productive ability of excavating equipment on different jobs or projects. Factors for each project must be developed individually and applied as the conditions and requirements dictate. TYPES' OF DRAGLINES. Types of draglines are differentiated by the propelling method used and are generally divided into four classes, as follows: 1. Wagon mounted 3. Crawler mounted 2. Truck mounted 4. Walking Figure 8.2-1 shows a truck-mounted dragline. This type is considered to be the most mobile unit. In order to increase stability over the side, outriggers are installed as part of the truck chassis. This feature is not shown in .this figure. Figure 8.2-2 shows a crawler-mounted dragline. The long, wide crawlers are used to increase the stability and reduce the bearing pressure of this unit. These features allow for use of these units on surfaces too soft for the wagon- or truck-mounted types. Figure 8.2-3 shows a walking-type dragline. The large diameter tub and the well-supported boom through the gantry gives high stability for rugged works over a long life. BASIC PARTS OF A DRAGLINE. The basic parts of a dragline are illustrated in Fig. 8.2-4. A deck layout is shown in Fig. 8.2-5 with the main components named. OPERATION OF A DRAGLINE. A room and pillar coal operation in central Pennsylvania was experiencing roof cutters and long running roof falls caused by high horizontal stresses. The roof conditions created hazards for the miners, and caused several production panels to he abandoned prematurely. The mine requested assistance from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) in applying the "advance and relieve" mining to reduce the affects of the horizontal stress during panel development. The "advance and relieve" plan that was developed called for removing a pillar on one side of the panel as it was being advanced, thus creating a cave. The caving then relieved a portion of the horizontal stress across the panel. Because the horizontal stress direction is key to the success of this method, stress mapping as well as mining experience was used to establish the direction of the horizontal stress. Subsequent field measurements provided an estimate of the stress magnitude. Three panels were mined using this technique, and good roof conditions were achieved in all these panels. Instrumentation was used to monitor the stress changes in the roof created by the cave. Stress relief of over 1.000 psi was measured 120 ft from the cave and to depths of 20 ft into the roof. The lateral extent of the stress relief zone across the panels appears to be about 400 to 500 ft. This case history has provided much insight into the practical application of the "advance and relieve" method discussed in this paper.

The investigation of major and minor coal-mine disasters has been a routine function of the Bureau of Mines since its inception in 1910, and the facts obtained during such investigations have been used as a basis for determining the precautions that the personnel of many mines are observing to prevent similar occurrences, The Bureau has conducted extensive research on roof-control problems, but a comprehensive study of fatal roof-fall accidents was not attempted until February 10, 1950, when the policy of investigating all coal-mine fatalities was approved by Bureau of Mines Director James Boyd. The investigations are being conducted by Federal coal-mine inspectors functioning under the provisions of the Coal Mine Inspection and Investigation Act of May 1941, Public Law 49, and reports covering the investigations are distributed to management, the State mine inspection agency, and representatives of the mine workers organization having jurisdiction at the mine. SCOPE AND PURPOSE OF STUDY This study covers the Federal investigation of 263 of the 315 fatalities from falls of roof, face, or rib that were charged to the bituminous-coal industry during the calender year 1950. The number of roof-fall fatalities investigated is recorded by States in table 1.

This report reviews the first three "investigative and concept generation" phases of the referenced contract, and details task performance of Phase IV. This last phase integrated the most promising concepts from Phases I, II, and III into a prototype detailed design which was manufactured, and then tested on a mine locomotive. The concepts developed during the first three phases provided "Improved Pole Tracking," automatic "Rapid Pole Retraction" in the event of dewirement, and servo-operated "Remote Pole Repositioning" on the trolley wire. The Appendix of this report supplies detailed information for the design and construction of the prototype system which is comprised of an RCB (Remotely Controlled Base subassembly), an RCL (Remote Control Lever subassembly) and an SAU (Servo Amplifier Unit) subassembly.

About six years ago the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. decided to investigate the possibility of extracting zinc from the ores of certain mines in the Butte district. These ores are of a complex character and contain so much iron and lead that the concentrate contains only 33 to 35 per cent. zinc. Investigations showed that while a high-grade concentrate could not be obtained by ordinary methods, such as tabling and magnetic treatment, a fair grade could be made by the Horwood process. In this method, the concentrate resulting from the flotation of all of the sulfides is given a light roast and this calcine is subjected to flotation in the presence of a large amount of sulfuric acid; the resulting concentrate contains most of the zinc and a residue contains most of the iron. The fact that the lead, copper, and silver are divided approximately equally between the zinc concentrate and the iron residue and the large consumption of acid, which ranged from 50 to 100 lb. (22 to 45 kg.) per ton of concentrates, were serious objections to this plan. The zinc recovery, moreover, was low, as a considerable percentage invariably accompanied the iron. While a profit might be made on the ores by the use of this process, it was thought that other and more promising methods might be devised. After carefully studying the field and doing some laboratory work on various processes that had been suggested, it was decided that the electrolysis of sulfate solutions was the most promising. We soon found, as have other investigators, that the only way to obtain a good zinc deposit is to have the electrolyte free from all metals more electronegative than zinc, such as copper, cadmium, lead, arsenic, antimony, etc. Arsenic and antimony are particularly injurious, causing very poor current efficiency and small yield per horsepower when present in amounts so small as almost to defy detection—1 mg. or less per liter. A pure zinc is soluble only with difficulty in sulfuric acid; an impure zinc dissolves very readily. Electrolytic zinc deposited from pure solutions is, of course, extremely pure and dissolves only about one-fiftieth

Several occurrences of disseminated galena, including a former producing mine, are found in Pennsylvanian fluviatile sandstone of the Salmon River Basin, Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia. Detailed study of the distribution of these occurrences has revealed that highest galena concentrations are found in sandstone overlying channel-shaped depressions in felsic basement rocks. These buried depressions, in turn, correlate in position with modern streams in areas of basement exposure. This correspondence suggests that the latter are at least partially controlled by an exhumed Pennsylvanian topography. If this is correct, then several other streams in the area, lying on basement, may be used to locate possible undiscovered lead deposits in sandstones of the Salmon River Basin.

"The mining of iron ore in the Kursk Magnetic Anomaly (KMA) region of the U.S.S.R. is done mostly by the open-cut method. An assembly of open pits capable of producing about 100 million tons of ore per year makes KMA the largest iron ore field in the world. Three gigantic open pits are currently in operation: Lebedinsky, Mikhailovsky and Stoilensky. These pits are as large as 13 km2 on the surface and as deep as 230 m. The mining operations are constantly faced with the problem of flooding from aquifers that overlie the orebodies; the magnitude of the problem is evident from the fact that the present groundwater inflow to these three pits is about 110 million mt /yr.Under such conditions, safe operations and pit wall stability are of great importance, and this has been accomplished very effectively by the appropriate use of seepage barriers and drainage systems. At KMA, the most important items used in the system of groundwater control are standard pumping wells, raise wells that drain into a 20 km to 30 km long underground drift located just outside the perimeter of the pit, horizontal wells driven through the pit walls, and horizontal drains. This paper describes the mining and engineering technology that have been developed at KMA to control the groundwater systems and protect the mines from flooding."

This Bureau of Mines report describes photolineaments obtained from stereoscopic examination of vertical aerial photographs and by the Ronchi grating study of aerial photoindex sheets. The photolineaments are compared with the trends of oriented fracture systems procured by measuring the compass direction of joints in bedrock. The relative reliability of the methods is shown, and the results are presented in graphical, tabular, and written form. Analyses of field measurements of strikes of bedrock joints in the project area indicate for the most part two intersecting sets of major joints oriented N 76° W - N 15° E, and N 57° W - N 27° E. The analyses of lineaments determined by stereoscopic examination of aerial photographs show dominant trends of lineament zones of weakness to be an average of N 65° W - N 20°E. Analysis of lineaments found by Ronchi grid viewing of aerial photoindex sheets indicate dominant trends of N 70° W - N 27° E. The three methods give similar findings and verify the work of previous authors. The Ronchi grid method is a useful guide, but it cannot be substituted for the two more painstaking methods.

Decision Network Modelling in a mining operation represents a complex process environment that is inherently more variable than a processing plant or factory. The uncertain availability of loading locations, haulage paths, loading and hauling equipment, along with inconsistent operator behaviour, cause a relatively large number of upset events that must be recognized, communicated and dealt with by the appropriate management authority. Traditional process maps that represent a deterministic model of the mining process can quickly break down in the face of such a volatile environment. An alternate modelling strategy, composed of decision networks, focuses on the interactions between goal-oriented entities and their environment, allowing system integrators to explicitly determine the information to be exchanged while providing feedback mechanisms that improve system flexibility and decision quality. This ensures a consistent framework for incrementally increasing system automation.
