"During an annual inventory of nuclear material, a plated steel container which contained plutonium oxide failed. The container had been packaged for temporary storage but had been overlooked and remained in storage for more than 23 years. Although it was determined that the failure occurred through the slip-top rim, a metallurgical evaluation was requested to help to determine the integrity of the container.Optical metallography and scanning electron microscopy were used to analyze the character and degree of corrosion in the container. The depth of corrosion, measured at approximately 10 µm, did not pose a threat to the integrity of the container. However, the corrosion morphology and chemistry did suggest that a galvanic cell had developed between the tin and steel from the condensation of water. The morphology also suggests that the attack of the steel took place over a series of cycles due to changes of the environment.IntroductionMetallographic analysis was requested as part of the investigation into the mechanism of the failure of a slip-top container (#38621) containing plutonium oxide (PuO2) powder. The container had leaked during a special nuclear material (SNM) annual inventory causing contamination and closure of the vault. A photograph of the container and interior container is shown on the right in Figure 1. An initial investigation established that the source of contamination was the consequence of the failure of multiple layers of containment. Initially by the deterioration of the interior plastic bottle and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) bagout bag, and finally through the lid and steel container interface at a location where tape had not adhered properly [1]. Although the source of the breach was established, it was determined that metallographic analysis was important to establish the extent of deterioration of the steel container."

Based on the mining condition and roof lithology of the 2-3 coal seam at Gengcun Mine, the simulated materials modeling method was used to study the movement process and characteristics of overburden strata movement and to analyze the movement laws of overburden strata during top coal caving mining. Based on the modeling results, variation of the peak abutment pressure and its effect on the top coal's crushing and caving in the mining process was discussed.

During investigation of the occurrence of manganese deposits in the western United States, examining engineers of the Bureau of Mines collected samples from several properties in Montana. Extensive laboratory tests were made to determine the amenability of these ores to standard ore-dressing methods of concentration to produce marketable-grade products. The Tzarena claim, one of the properties sampled, is on the western end of the Rama or Black Chief vein in the city of Butte, Silver Bow County, Mont., on the southwestern periphery of the mining district. The Black Chief 'WAR system contains one of the largest and most extensive known rhodochrosite deposits in the world. Test work was conducted on two samples of Tzarena ore. Sample 1 is representative of a vain 5 feet wide on the 150-foot level of the Tzarena shaft. Sample 2 is representative of a vein 8 feet wide in the 100-foot level of the shaft. The Minnie Jane mine, 1/2 mile northwest of the Tzarena claim, contains ore similar in mineralogical composition to Tzarena ore but differing materially in manganese content and to some extent in physical characteristics. Ore-dressing investigations were made on three samples of Minnie Jane ore. Sample 1 represented stock-piled ore, sample 2 represented ore from Minnie Jane mine having a considerable sulfide content, and sample 3 represented low-grade ore.

Kennecott Copper Corporation and the U. S. Bureau of Mines cooperated in a full-scale slope stability research project at the Kimbley Pit near Ely, Nevada. The west wall of the Kimbley Pit was mined from an over-all slope angle of 45° to an over-all slope angle of 57° and the pit was deepened nearly 50 feet. Mining was begun February 10, 1966, and completed October 30, 1966. Approximately 2.55 million tons of ore and waste were mined. The project was designed and carried out to learn more about the behavior of a pit wall as its slope angle is steepened and to obtain a possible insight into engineering parameters for use in design of future slopes. Data from this project are presented as obtained from (1) instruments installed in two adits for deformation and displacement measurements, (2) a subsidence network installed on the surface above the steepened wall, (3) pre- and post-mining observations of stress in rock, (4) sonic-velocity measurements, and (5) seismic and microseismic investigations. Changes occurred in measured quantities as the slope was steepened but stopped when mining was completed. Agreement was noted between the measured changes and predicted changes obtained from calculations using the finite element technique. Subsidence surveys and microseismic studies show the steepened pit wall to be stable.

"Abstract. Sampling of respirable dust and analyses of samples have been partially completed for a longwall panel. Physical and compositional properties which have been characterized include:l. Respirable mass concentration, 2. Mineral composition,3. Particle size distribution by mineral,4. Particle shape distribution by mineral,5. Particle angularity distribution by mineral, and6. Respirable size distribution.Analytical techniques used in the characterization of samples are described, and results are reported with emphasis placed on relationships between the various characteristics and worker locations. Details of existing mining conditions, equipment arrangements, dust control methods and operating system parameters are presented.INTRODUCTIONThrough the work of many researchers worldwide, the health of coal miners in modern societies is now protected from dangerous exposure to respirable coal mine dust. A vast amount of research culminated in the exposure-response model of Jacobsen, et al. (1971) whi3h has been used to establish the 2mg/m exposure limit in the United States. According to the model, exposure to respirable dust for 35 years at this level or less would prevent the occurrence of a clinically significant case of coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP). The exposure limit, of course, must be adjusted whenever greater than five percent free silica exists in the respirable dust.The Jacobsen model was built around a mass concentration exposure, which showed the highest correlation with incidence and progression of CWP. As Morgan; et al. (1973) noted, howev.er, the quantity of respirable dust inhaled is not the only significant factor. It is noted that although mass of respirable dust correlates highest with the incidence of CWP, it is not a causal factor. Indeed, the insidious processes causing the disease occur on the cell-particle scale, requiring microscopic investigation."

The construction of a model to associate probability of occurrence of some measure of mineral wealth with the geology for each subdivision (cell) of the area is postulated. The questions (1) are the observations made in reconnaissance geology sufficiently related to mineral wealth to distinguish the cells of high value from those of low value, and (2) can this geology be related mathematically to mineral wealth and probability are answered in a case study of 97,000 square miles in Arizona and New Mexico. Measurements on mineral wealth and geologic variables of 243 cells were made. The geologic variables, valued in counts, percentages and lengths, quantified the theoretical concepts of the model. It was found that multiple discriminant analysis and classification analysis by Bayesian statistics and multivariate normal probability function constitute a two-phase probability model that associates probabilities with geologic information and mineral wealth. The cells of explored area must be allotted the value class indicated by their cumulative production and estimate reserves (given well-defined geological relationships in a mineral wealth area), and a discriminant and classification analysis must be performed in which probabilities of the cell belonging to each of the value groups are generated as a function of the geologic variables. This determines whether high value cells can be distinguished from low value cells by their geology as well as indicating those cells misclassified by the model into a higher value group than warranted by their known mineral wealth. The second use of the model is for extrapolation. It is demonstrated how geologic information on an explored area can be utilized in guiding exploration in an unexplored area. Exploration decisions can be predicted on explicitly determined measures of uncertainty (the probabilities). SUMMARY This study postulates the construction of a model to associate probability of occurrence of some measure of mineral wealth with the geology for each subdivision (cell) of the area. Such a model will distinguish those cells deserving further exploration on the basis of their geology: The basic postulates of this study are as follows: v = Q(R,S,F,A) P(V) = G(R,S,F,A,V), where V = a measure of mineral wealth P(V) = the probability of occurrence of V R = age and type of rock F = rock fracturing A =age of igneous activity and contact relationships. There are really two questions to be answered: 1) are the observations made in reconnaissance geology sufficiently related to mineral wealth to distinguish the cells of high value from those of low value, and 2) can this geology be related mathematically to mineral wealth and probability? In order to answer these questions, an area of about 97,000 square miles situated chiefly in Arizona and New Mexico was selected as a case study. This case study area was divided into 243 cells, each 20 miles square, and measurements were made on mineral wealth and geologic variables. Crude geologic variables valued in counts, percentages and lengths are constructed to reflect the above postulated variables. These measurement variables thus provide quantified values defining the theoretical concepts of the model. It was found that multiple discriminant analysis and classification analysis by Bayesian statistics and the multivariate normal probability function constitute a two-phase probability model that associates probabilities with geologic information and mineral wealth. Given the availability of an area that is well explored and upon which the relationships of mineral wealth to geology can be adequately defined, there are two ways in which the analysis outlined in this paper can prove beneficial. Bureau of Mines laboratory tests show that ilmenite concentrates with titanium dioxide contents as low as 33 wt--pct can be beneficiated to produce a crystalline substitute for natural rutile suitable for direct chlorination. The synthesized product prepared by a three-step procedure was comparable with natural rutile in titanium content. Reduction smelting of ilmenite removes iron as a pig iron byproduct, and the remaining slag phase is greatly enriched in titanium. Oxidation of the slag in the presence of phosphorus¬bearing slag additive converts the titanium-bearing phases to discrete rutile crystals and a glass phase containing most of the associated impurities. Rutile is separated from the glassy impurities by attrition scrubbing ground slag in dilute phosphoric or sulfuric acid solutions. Tests made in a laboratory fluid-bed reactor show that synthetic rutile responds to chlorination at the same rate as natural rutile and that more than 95 pct of the titanium contained in the feedstock was extracted as titanium tetrachloride.

INSULATING materials include a wide variety of nonmetallic mineral products such as exfoliated vermiculite, expanded gypsum, 85 pct magnesia, diatomite, asbestos, perlite, cellular glass, pumice, silica aerogel, expanded aggregates and mineral wool. Except mineral wool, most of these products, or the materials from which they are manufactured, are described in other chapters of this book. PROPERTIES OF INSULATING MATERIALS The insulating properties of the materials considered in this chapter result in general from entrapping extremely small pockets of air in such a manner that heat is not transferred by convection. The minimum heat conductivities of such insulating materials are slightly greater therefore than the conductivity of still air. In addition, conductivity varies with the overall density of the material, the temperature range in which the measurements are made, and the form into which the material is fabricated. However, the numerical value of heat conductivity should not be the sole criterion of an insulating material; for a particular application it may be advantageous to use a material of somewhat higher conductivity in order to secure other desirable engineering properties. This is especially true with certain materials that are used because of their refractoriness. Comparative insulating values of some commonly used insulating materials are shown in Table 1. In comparing the values presented in this table it should be borne in mind that heat conductivity varies with the mean temperature, with the overall density, and with the amount of moisture present. "The counter-current fluidized cascade is a novel and potentially efficient pneumatic gravity separation device. Data are presented on over 150 runs of cleaning Alberta thermal coals, covering several size ranges. The coarser sizes of coal were processed in admixture with a fluidizing medium consisting of 0.5-by 0.1-mm hematite (or magnetite) and limestone particles. The partition curves for coal particles larger than about 3 mm, mixed with fluidizing medium, showed that the sharpness of separation achievable with the cascade approaches that of wet heavy medium processes, whereas with particles in the size range of 3 by 0.6 mm the sharpness of separation was comparable to that of a Baum jig. Useful cleaning was also achieved with particles smaller than 0.6 mm , Throughput rates of up to 11 tonnes per metre width of cascade per hour were achieved, with no indication of a deterioration in performance.IntroductionPneumatic coal beneficiation has steadily lost ground vis-a-vis hydraulic beneficiation during the past quarter century, primarily because of the sharper separations achievable with the latter methods. Nevertheless, there are certain inherent advantages of pneumatic separation methods which would give them an advantage in the market place were it possible to increase their efficiency to be technically competitive with those of hydraulic processes. These advantages are a dry product, resulting in a higher calorific value per ton, and avoidance of the problems associated with treatment and storage of process waste waters. Also, although it may be necessary to dry the raw coal prior to pneumatic processing, the dry rejects produced constitute an ideal fuel for a fluidized-bed combustor, which could provide heat both for drying the coal and for other purposes."

Due to the detrimental effect of platelet iron-rich intermetallics on mechanical properties (particularly ductility) in cast alloys, it has been essential to transform these phases into Chinese script morphology. In the present work, the effects of Mn and/or Si addition and cooling rate on the phase transformation of the iron-rich intermetallics in 206 cast alloys with different Fe contents ranging from 0.15 % to 0.5 % were systematically investigated. The results obtained showed that platelet ß-Fe and Al3(FeMn), Chinese script a-Fe, Alm(FeMn) and Al6(FeMn) can be observed in the 206 cast alloys, depending on the Fe, Mn and Si contents as well as the cooling rate. It was found that the addition of either Mn or Si favors the formation of Chinese script iron-rich intermetallics but inhibits the precipitation of the platelet phases. In addition, the combined addition of both Mn and Si has a synergistic effect on the phase transformation. Furthermore, there exists a critical cooling rate to effectively suppress the formation of platelet iron-rich intermetallics for a given alloy. The threshold cooling rate decreases with increasing Fe, Mn and Si contents. Casting process maps are established to correlate the intermetallics precipitated with alloy chemistry and cooling rate for 206 cast alloys containing various Fe levels.

San Juan Mine began pre-splitting the highwall prior to cast blasting in August 1986. The first pre-split shot used six inch PVC (polyvinylcloride) pipe inside a 10 5/8 inch hole, drilled at a 74 degree angle. The powder factor was about .90 pounds per cubic yard.

The economic importance of salt domes has been recognized throughout the world primarily because of oil and gas accumulations on their flanks and, to a lesser degree, for the value of their salt and potash. Recently they have become of value as hosts for cavities used to store hydrocarbons. In the near future we believe that their main value will be as a source of geothermal energy. Although tremendous effort has been expended on the understanding of the geology and physical characteristics of the strata intruded by salt domes, relatively little energy has been exerted in the comprehension of the salt dome itself. Salt domes have long been recognized as a geological heat anomaly. With respect to other sedimentary rocks, salt is a good conductor of heat. Expressing values in 10-3 cgs units, sedimentary rocks vary from 1.0 to 8.0; metamorphic rocks from 5.2 to 8.4 and igneous rocks from 3.1 to 9.8. Rock salt in its pure form has a thermal conductivity of 17. (Gussow, 1970). Thus a salt dome (Fig. Ml) can be expected to act as a conduit bringing heat vertically from deep within the Earth's crust. This was, in part, substantiated when in 1958 a horizontal core hole was drilled from within the Avery Island Mine at the 500 foot level. The horizontal hole was started where the ambient temperature of the salt was 74° F. and drilled toward the center of the dome. At the end of this 2,000 foot hole the temperature was 90° F. thus depicting a horizontal temperature gradient of 7° F./1,000 feet. Because this core hole penetrated a shear zone connate water that appeared as a "cold spot" on the temperature gradient, the foregoing data can only be regarded as indicative.

"This report describes an exploratory project conducted by the Bureau of Mines on a fluorite deposit near Vado, N. Mex. Results of trenching are given. Together with analyses made upon samples of the ore. The Federal Geological Survey3/ completed a preliminary geologic study and mapped the deposit during the summer of 1944. A Bureau engineer examined the deposit in August 1944. As a result of these investigations, it was concluded that the deposit contained substantial inferred ore reserves. Exploratory work was recommended to obtain information that might possibly lead to production from the property. Assistance was given the Bureau by the Geological Survey.A gasoline-powered air compressor, other equipment, and supplies were delivered to the property from January 20 to 25, 1943. Trenching began under the direction of a Bureau of Mines engineer on January 25, 1947, and ended on March 15, 1945. The results of trenching and sampling form he basis of this report.In its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. IT is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, R.G. Knickerbocker, chief, analyzes samples and performs beneficiation tests. Both these branches are under the supervisions of Dr. R. S. Dean, assistant director."

Crystal-chemical and stntctural properties of sulfide minerals are considered. The information gained is to be used to interpret (I ) freshly broken mineral surfaces, (2) modifications of the mineral surfaces, and (3) reactions at the mineral surfaces. From these basic disciplines, concepts with regard to the changes that surfaces undergo, reactions that might take place, the geometry of the interface, the state of different atoms and ions in the interface, and other physical and chemical properties of an interface must be developed, weighed and applied. The authors first deal with these conceptual considerations from which hypotheses are set forth to describe the environ men tal-interfacial relationships for several sulfide minerals. Qualitative and quantitative explanation of par-ticulate solid separations are unknown entities because of the lack of adequate models and mathematical relationships to explain the activity occurring between the solid and liquid phases. It is a transitional region in which it is difficult to ascertain the mechanisms of adsorption of ions, molecules, etc., on mineral surfaces, as well as other secondary reactions which occur in interfacial regions. Thus, in this paper the authors deal with conceptual considerations from which hypotheses are set forth to describe the environmental-interfacial relationships for sulfide minerals. GENERAL CONSIDERATIONS Interfacial Reactions:Interfacial reactions are the cruxes of flotation schemes as well as other processes such as thickening, filtration and hydrometallurgy. However, as noted by Klassen and Mokrousov: 1 "The problems concerning the surfaces of natural minerals, the laws governing simultaneous adsorption from aqueous solution on these surfaces of a whole series of reagents, the laws of the surface reactions and the properties of water layers separating the minerals, are all known to a first approximation only." An investigator has the privilege of postulating methods of solid-liquid interfacial reactions. REACTIONS WITH WATER - Water consists of hydronium (H3 O 4) and hydroxyl (OH-) ions in the ionized state. That this is so forms the basis for the postulated reaction of the hydrated hydrogen ion with net-negative mineral surfaces as depicted in Fig. 1. In this case water is bonded to mineral surfaces through hydrogen-bridge-type bonds - possibly hydrogen bonds. Although bonding of the van der Waal type may be responsible for this reaction, it is most likely that stronger bonds are involved. Once firmly bonded to the surface, the water layer is known to be quite tenacious. It is further speculated that a shear plane exists at some distance (see Fig. 1) away from the mineral surface. Exact location of this plane is not known, but in all probability it will be positioned across a weak bond of the hydrogen-bond type where the surface-attached water is coordinated to the original hydrated hydrogen ion. REACTION WITH METAL IONS - Klassen and Mokrousov ' state: "The presence of an ion in water leads to an immediate formation around that ion of a highly condensed atmosphere of water dipoles and thus to hydration of the ion." The fact is known that multivalent cations are strongly hydrated, usually by six or eight molecules of water, and that anions are not so strongly hydrated. Conceding the fact that thermodynamics, concentration, pH, and physical considerations are of utmost importance in truly explaining a mechanism of metal ions reaction with a hydrated mineral surface, it does seem logical that the mechanism illustrated in Fig. 2 is feasible. In this reaction, the metal ion (M) is coordinated in one dimension - to the mineral-surface hydration layer. Note also that explanation of this reaction requires that the shear plane move to a less stable bond configuration; that is, the shear plane has moved to a position between the metal ion and the other coordinated water molecules which are more free to dissociate. Reactions as depicted in Fig. 2 should cause the formation of an apparent mineral surface which is net-positive. Immediately, it must be noted that measurements of apparent-mineral surfaces serve - within limits - to indicate a degree of ion-surface reaction capability. A research study was conducted to devise a method for producing phosphoric acid directly from unbeneficiated Florida phosphate matrix. This research was performed as part of the Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, goals of improving minerals and metals recovery from domestic resources and of minimizing the environmental impact associated with mineral recovery operations. This report describes research in which unbeneficiated, dry, south-central Florida phosphate matrix was digested with sulfuric acid in a continuous-circuit, five-tank reactor to yield phosphoric acid and gypsum residue. Feed capacity of the reactor was 100 pounds (45 kg) of dry matrix per 24-hour day. When digestion was carried out at 185° F (85° C), acid filtration rates of up to 420 pounds of P20S per square foot per day were attained. Combined iron and aluminum impurities in the product filter acid were about 60 percent greater than values reported in commercially produced acid derived from concentrate. phosphate recovery was 87 to 90 percent of the phosphate contained in the as-mined matrix.

Titaniferous magnetite deposits are a significant source of vanadium for use in high strength steel alloying and other chemical applications. The mineralogy of the deposits varies markedly and the ore characteristics strongly influence the process route selected and the metallurgical outcomes. Characterisation of the ores reveals the presence of magnetite, ilmenite and other minerals such as spinel hematite and goethite with variable degrees of weathering along with weathered products of host rock. The standard processing route is to crush, grind and magnetically recover a concentrate for salt roasting to produce a soluble vanadate. Ore beneficiation is practised to generate an iron based mineral concentrate containing much of the vanadium with low silica levels of two per cent. Typical processing problems encountered are fine liberation size, over grinding of the magnetite and variable response to magnetic separation resulting from the weathering profile. Beneficiation options are restricted, and generally focused on producing a combined iron and titanium rich concentrate containing vanadium due to the fact that ilmenite and magnetite and their products of weathering are magnetic and have similar specific gravities making their separation difficult. The ilmenite usually contains low levels of vanadium making its separation highly desirable from the iron mineralisation containing higher levels of vanadium. Salt roasting of vanadium ores followed by water leaching has been the standard processing route for many years. The cost of suitable sodium salts, availability of capital and increasing energy costs and energy availability are critical factors in determining the viability of aspiring vanadium producers. To date, only Windimurra has acquired full capital funding, secured energy and sodium salt supplies at suitable cost that enable the construction of the project. Low overall recoveries of vanadium to concentrate roasting at up to 1200¦C are critical cost issues. In this paper, factors influencing the recovery of vanadium are reviewed and emerging processing trends explored. The important features of the processing of titaniferous magnetites have been condensed from the literature, published works, company websites, our own work and personal communication.

Poland lies at the junction of three geologic provinces: the East European Precambrian platform, the Middle European Paleozoic platform, and the Alpine orogenic belt comprising the Carpathian Mountains. However most of the rocks that contain mineral deposits and many of the recently explored and mined deposits are commonly hidden under thick overburden, sometimes up to over 500 m thick. The discovery of these mineral deposits was due to the combination of geologists talents for inference and the keen interpretation of geophysical data ultimately tested by drilling. Examples of such use of the state-of-the-art geology include the following: 1. Sedimentologic and paleogeographic reconstructions led to the discovery of 8.8 Gt of bituminous coal under 500 m of Jurassic and Cretaceous cover in the Lublin basin, 2. Tectonic and paleogeografic data suggested a potential for discovery of burried Upper Permian copper de-posits on the Foresudetic monocline; subsequent exploration discovered 75 Mt of copper and 0,17 Mt of silver, 3. Geological interpretation of gravity and magnetic da-ta combined with sedimentologic data and regional subsur-face geology resulted in the location of 1.3 Gt of Fe-Ti-V ore in the Precambrian basement of northeastern Poland under -500 m of cover 4. A combination of metallogenic theory and geological interpretation of regional geophysical mapping led to the discovery of Caledonian-Hercynian granites and grano-diorites with accompanying porphyry-type Mo-W-Cu ores below 300 m cover on the northeastern border of the Upper Silesian coal basin 5. Tectonic reconstructions based on gravity and seismic data combined with theory on the origin of native sulfur led to the discovery of 1.0 Gt of native sulfur under cover up to 300 m thick. Five deposits were found at the northern margin of the Carpathian Foredeep. The other deposits found include lignite, polyhalite, lead-zinc ores.
