Introduction The East-West Gateway Coordinating Council is an organization of local governments formed in 1965 to identify regional problems and to formulate policies, plans and programs to resolve them. The major goal of the Gateway Council is to improve the quality of life for the citizens of the St. Louis Region. While East-West Gateway Coordinating Council is the organization I represent and it only deals with the St. Louis Metropolitan Area, you will find one or more similar organizations in each of our nation's urbanized areas. As a result, for illustrative purposes, I will use my organization to portray what is happening nationwide. For example, in order to eliminate duplication, the Council reviews local applications for approximately 100 federally funded programs in such areas as highways, mass transit, parks, water treatment, and sewers before they can be sent to the appropriate funding agency. The Council's varied functions place it in a unique position of receiving more and more responsibility for developing strategies of implementation of various environmental regulations. This is due to the fact that environmental control is a relatively new field and we, as a country, are relatively inexperienced. The resulting regulations and guidelines will depend, to a great extent, on what the general public is willing to accept in terms of controls and what price they are willing to pay in terms of taxes and increased costs. Land Use: Growth vs No Growth This is perhaps the most encompassing environmental issue. We, as a nation, are beginning to realize that land is a limited natural resource and that the way we choose to use 'this resource affects many other aspects of our lives--whether we can catch edible fish in the Mississippi, how much we pay for sewer services, if we can swim in a

Four chloride and seven fixed-nitrogen processes for recovering manganese from domestic resources are described. The chloride processes are divided into two classes (leaching and chloridization) depending upon the major operation responsible for converting the manganese minerals to the chloride from which manganese oxide products are obtained. The fixed nitrogen processes, all of which yield high-grade manganese oxide products, are essentially either leaching or roasting processes. The 11 processes include HC1 leach, HC1 chloridization, HC1 chloride volatilization, CaC12 chloride volatilization, NO2 leach, HNO3-NO2 leach, NH3-CO2-H2O system leach, (NH4)2SO4 leach, (NH4)2SO4 roast, and ammonium salt roast.

Microyielding in 99.999 pct Cu occuwed in two distinct parabolic microstages and was substantially indeoendent of grain size at the relatiz~ely large grain sizes stzcdied. The strain recouered on unloading was a significant fraction of the forward strain and was initially higher in a copper-coated single crystal than in poly crystals. Results were interpreted in terms of cooperative yielding and short-range dislocation motion activated otter a range of stresses, and a formalism was given for the first microstage. It was suggested that models involving long-range dislocation motion are more appropriate for impure or alloyed fcc metals. THERE are still many unanswered questions concerning the degree and origin of the grain size dependence of plastic properties. In the microstrain region, a theory of the stress-strain curve proposed by Brown and Lukens,' based on an exhaustion hardening model in which the grain boundaries limit the amount of slip per source, accounted for the variation with grain size of microyielding in iron, zinc, and copper.' This theory assumes N dislocation sources per unit volume whose activation stress varies only with grain orientation. Dislocations pile-up against grain boundaries until the back stress deactivates the source, which leads to a relationship between the axial stress and the strain in the microstrain region given by: where G is the shear modulus, D the grain diameter, a the flow stress, and a, is the stress required to activate a source in the most favorably oriented grain.3 If this or other grain-boundary pile-up models are correct, then the reverse strain on unloading would be much larger for a polycrystalline specimen than for a single crystal. Also, the microplasticity would become insensitive to grain size if this could be made larger than the mean dislocation glide path for a single crystal in the microregion. These questions are examined in the present work on polycrys-talline copper and a single crystal coated to provide a synthetic polycrystal. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Tensile specimens 3 mm sq were prepared from 99.999 pct Cu after a sequence of rolling and vacuum annealing treatments similar to those recommended by Cook and Richards4-6 to minimize preferred orientation. Grain size variation from 0.05 to 0.38 mm was obtained by a final anneal at temperatures from 310" to 700°C. Dislocation etching7 revealed pits on those few grains within 3 deg of (111). For all grain sizes dislocation densities could be estimated as -107 cm per cu cm with no prominent subboundaries. The single crystals, of the same cross section, were grown by the Bridgman technique with axes 8 deg from [Oll] and one face 2 deg from (111). An anneal at 1050°C produced dislocation densities of 2 x 106 cm per cu cm and subboundaries -1 mm apart in these single crystals. A Pb-Sn-Ag creep resistant solder was used to mount the specimens, with a 19 mm effective gage length, into aligned sleeve grips fitted to receive the strain gages. All specimens were chemically polished and rinsed8 to remove surface films just prior to testing. The synthetic polycrystal was made by electroplating a single crystal with 1 µ of polycrystalline copper from a cyanide bath. Mechanical testing was carried out on an Instron machine using two matched LVDT tranducers to measure specimen displacement, the temperature and the measuring circuit being sufficiently stable to yield a strain sensitivity of 5 x 107. At the crosshead speeds employed, plastic strain rates were, above strains of 10¯4, about 10¯5 per sec for polycrystalline specimens and 10-4 per sec for the single crystals. Plastic strain rates were an order of magnitude lower at strains near l0- '. A few checks at strain rates tenfold higher were made for reassurance that the initial yielding of polycrystalline copper was not strongly strain-rate dependent. Test procedures followed the general framework outlined by Roberts and Brown.9,10 An alignment preload of 8 g per sq mm for polycrystals, and 2 to 4 g per sq mm for single crystals, was used for all tests. These gave no detectable permanent strain within the sensitivity of the present experiments; although at these stress levels, small permanent strains are detectable in copper with methods of higher sensitivity.11 12 stress and strain data are reported in terms of axial components. RESULTS General. The initial yielding is shown in the stress vs strain data of Fig. 1. For polycrystals, cycle lc, the loading line bent over gradually without a well-defined proportional limit, and almost all of the plastic prestrain appeared as permanent strain at the end of the cycle. The unloading curve was accurately linear over most of its length with a distinct break indicating the onset of a significant nonelastic reverse strain at the stress o u, indicated by the arrows. The yielding in subsequent cycles, Id and le, had the same general character. The single crystal behavior, shown to a different scale at the right of Fig. 1, was different in that initially the nonlinear reverse strain was unexpectedly much greater than for polycrystals. "The dissolution behavior of lateritic nickel ore containing 1.2% Ni, 40.6% Fe, 9.5% SiO2 and 9.59% MgO by sulfuric acid was investigated. The ore was characterized adequately by different techniques such as chemical analysis, scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM), thermal analysis and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopic measurements. The characterization results did not reveal any distinct mineral phase for nickel; it was associated with mineral phases like goethite, hematite, chromite and serpentine in various proportions. The beneficiation studies by hydrocyclone, magnetic separation and flotation did not enrich the nickel value. Reduction roasting followed by magnetic separation indicated only 2%Ni with 28.9% yield. Consequently, the recovery of nickel values from the lateritic ore by acid leaching under different conditions was studied. The kinetics of leaching obey the first order rate equations. The recovery of nickel was found to be influenced by temperature. It was observed that at an acid concentration of 2M, leaching temperature 363 K, time 240 min and solid-to-liquid ratio of 1:10, it is possible to leach out more than 95% Ni.IntroductionThe demand for nickel is ever increasing. Nickel is used to impart specific properties to steel, titanium and aluminium, and also is used in petrochemicals, catalysts, batteries, etc. It has been estimated that nickel oxide ores account for about 70% of the world nickel reserves. However, most nickel is sourced from sulfide ores. Nickel is extracted from sulfide ore by size reduction, followed by flotation to obtain a nickel-rich concentrate. The concentrate is then pyrometallurgically processed by smelting to produce a nickel-rich matte after discarding an iron-rich slag. Due to the increasing demand for nickel in stainless steel and other alloys, nickel is also extracted from many secondary sources. The recovery of nickel from oxide ores is now gaining momentum, and more exploitation of this ore is being attempted by advanced as well as environmentally feasible, cost-effective techniques. Dalvi et al. (2004) has reported that, due to the increase in demand, the world nickel production from laterites is expected to increase every year from the current level of production. In recent years, investigations of the use of low-grade ores, spent catalysts, clays, etc., have intensified to meet the market demand and also due to a shortage of high-grade nickel bearing ores (Al-Mansi and Abdel, 2002; Baba et al., 2009; Ismail et al., 2011)."

In order to establish the optimized recovery process for heavy minerals from Korean beach sand, we investigated the several physical separation methods such as gravity and magnetic separation followed by mineralogical characterization. There was clear relationship between the particle size and heavy mineral content that heavy minerals were mostly concentrated in the particles below 100mesh. Gravity separation using the spiral and shaking table separators made it possible to concentrate heavy minerals by rejecting the light and coarse particles consist mainly of quartz and other non-valuable minerals. The high-intensity magnetic roll separator and subsequent induced magnetic separator were applied to fractionate magnetic particles according to their magnetic susceptibility. The content of TiO2 of high susceptible ilmenite-rich fraction was 43.98wt.% while those of ZrO2 of non-magnetic and magnetic residue were 6.78wt.% and 3.11wt.%, respectively.

In this investigation, the effects of T4 and T6 heat treatments of AZ91 magnesium cast alloy have been studied. The effects of different microstructural details such as morphology, size and distribution of precipitates and their influence on fracture mechanisms were investigated by optical and scanning electron microscopy. The mechanical strength of the alloy after T6 treatment was found to increase in comparison to the T4 treatment, due to the formation of discontinuous precipitates in the grain boundaries. Precipitation in this alloy occurs in two ways: continuous precipitation, which nucleates and grows inside the grains, and discontinuous precipitation, which forms at the grain boundaries. During ageing, the length of the continuous precipitates increases, and, hence, interprecipitate distance decreases. The formation of discontinuous precipitates causes initiation and propagation of cracks at and the weakening of the grain boundaries. This is the principal reason for the reduction of the ultimate tensile strength in T6 heat treatment in comparison to the T4 condition.

Maptek, an international development software company, released version 3.2 of its Vulcan three-dimensional mining and geological software package. This latest release is expected to give clients better graphics performance and improved overall solutions. In addition, the company also released the NT version of Vulcan for Unix and personal computers. More than 800 code changes have gone into the 3.2 release, the Lakewood, CO-based company said. Many of these changes were in response to requests from Maptek's customers. Others have been motivated internally by the company to achieve better performance in its Envisage graphics interface. The introduction of hot keys and user-defined menus makes Envisage a more flexible interface and a more productive working environment. A new animation option provides new ways to enhance the organization and display of data. The animated data can include point, string, grid, triangulation and photographic-draped data. The shaft-mapping facility is also included in version 3.2. It enables the cylindrical view of the shaft to be unwrapped and displayed on the screen while the data remains in its true world coordinates. Major upgrades to Vulcan include underground blast design and geotechnical modules. The new blast design module allows the user to develop a ring design in any plane defined by the stope layout. Radial and offset holes can be developed. User-friendly editing tools make adjustments to the initial design a simple task. The user defines the plotting and reporting of rings and plot style templates allow flexibility in reporting. New features in the geotechnical toolbox include options to create daylight windows and pitch lines on the stereo nets. Geotechnical databases can be directly updated from the interpretation of the stereo net. Direct annotation of the symbols on the net is now possible and the stereo net display can be customized. Improvements to the documentation and links within the text have made the on-line help easier to navigate. Maptek also released the NT version of Vulcan soft- ware. The comprehensive design of the software pack- age for Unix and personal computers provides a three-dimensional geological modeling and mine planning system within a natural graphics environment. Users who require the power to manipulate extra- large and complex data sets will still be served by the Unix platform. Users who handle small-to-large datasets can now choose between Unix and personal computer platforms. The NT version will appeal primarily to companies that already have a personal computer network. Response to industry feedback was the basis for developing the NT version. "We want to ensure that our clients receive the optimal product for their needs," said Nicolas Simon, vice president of Maptek in North America. Some advantages of the NT version include: ? The U.S. Bureau of Mines has developed an electrorefining process to recover Ni, Co, Cr, and other metals from mixed and contaminated superalloy scrap. The superalloy scrap is cleaned then directly electrodeposited as a Ni -Co deposit. The process recovers approximately 90 pct of the Ni-Co available from the scrap as a 99t pct pure Ni-Co alloy. During electrorefining the electrolyte undergoes a purification process which results in Cr and other refractory metals reporting to the purification residue. Operating data is given for a 3-L compartmented electrolytic cell. Techniques for the removal of Fe, Cr, and trace impurities from the recycled electrolyte are outlined. The economics of a facility producing 15 mt/d of a Ni-Co alloy are also discussed.

The typical service life for a long distance slurry pipeline is15 to 25 years. Determination of wear rate for a pipeline could have a high economic impact on the pipeline project. Wear is a combination of chemical corrosion and mechanical abrasion. The contribution of each factor has to be determined project by project. Normally, chemical corrosion dominates the pipe wear in fine slurry pipelines. These pipelines have been designed with a velocity between 1.5 m/s and 2.5 m/s. Solids are suspended with high homogeneity across the pipeline section. Bottom wear is not much greater than the top wear and not sensitive to velocity. The wear pattern in the pipeline transporting medium coarse solids, such as milled ore and tailings, is different. Wear concentrates on the bottom of pipeline and the outer bends, and is more sensitive to flow velocity. Wear distribution along the pipelines is similar.

This chapter deals with the Mine Safety and Health Administrations's (MSHA] concern and obligations with regard to asbestiform minerals. Asbestiform minerals are defined as the magical group of hydrated, silicate minerals that possess a fiberlike structure capable of being woven into cloth. Their unique combination of properties, such as resistance to heat and chemical attack, high tensile strength, and flexibility was recognized centuries before Christ. Pausanias, the early Greek geographer, speaks of golden lamps, made about 430 BC, with in- combustible wicks of Carpathian flax. The Ro- mans used asbestos as cremation clothes to con- serve the ashes of deceased persons of rank. Charlemagne had an asbestos table cloth that he used to pass through fire to clean (Lanza, 19381. Early recognition of the health hazards associated with exposure to asbestos was documented in the first century by Pliny the Elder, a Roman naturalist, and Strabo, a Greek geographer. Both wrote of slaves with sickness of the lungs, whose occupation was that of weaving asbestos into cloth. This concern for the health of asbestos workers disappeared over the ages. Today, with the use of modern technology, asbestos products have been greatly exploited. The asbestos output has increased over a hundredfold in the past 70 years. World production has jumped from 454 t/y (500 stpy) in 1900 to 4.5 Mt/y (5 million stpy) in 1978. An increase in health problems for asbestos workers accompanied this increased usage. However, it was not until the modern era that the association of asbestos with chronic respiratory disease was rediscovered. Reports were published at the turn of the century documenting the effects of asbestos exposure on textile workers. One such report in 1907 by H.M. Montague Murray described the post mortem findings on a 34-year- old carding machine operator. Murray de- scribed the lungs as showing extensive diffuse pulmonary fibrosis spicules of asbestos. Subsequently, more reports of pulmonary fibrosis following inhalation of asbestos were published, including an epidemiological study of asbestos miners in 1930 (Merewether and Price, 1930), at Thetford, Que., Canada. This study took place at the mine 52 years after large-scale mining of asbestos had begun. But, the cancer- producing potential of asbestos was not established until 1949 when a report by Merewether in England described an excess of cancer of the lung and pleura [the lining of the lungs) among individuals dying from asbestosis (Merewether, 1949). In the past decade much attention has been focused on asbestosis, mesothelioma, and bronchogenic carcinoma, as the three major biological effects associated with asbestos ex- posure. Parenchymal and pleural asbestosis is a fibrosis in the substance of the lung with thickening and often calcification of the membranes lining the thoracic cavity. Mesothelioma is a malignant tumor of the membranes lining the thoracic or abdominal cavities, and bronchogenic carcinoma is a cancer of the lung tissue itself. These diseases occur in various degrees and combinations. The severity and occurrence of these biological effects are directly influenced by conditions such as dose response relationships, intensity of exposure, duration of exposure, lapse of time since initial exposure, and cigarette smoking. Numerous studies indicate that the relationship between these conditions and the incidence of disease is proportional. Congress has recently concluded (Congressional Record, 1979) that, "exposure to asbestos fibers has been identified as significantly in- creasing the incidence of cancer and other severe or fatal diseases such as abestosis." Congress conveys its concerns for the safety and health of the nation's miners through the Federal Mine Safety and Health Act of 1977 in which it gave MSHA the authority to set safe

Recent EPRI research on utilities? likely strategies to reduce sulfur emissions differs sharply from policy analyses showing all- switching or all-scrubbing choices. Energy Ventures Analysis, with Stearns-Catalytic and A. T. Kearney, estimated sulfur-removal costs for scrubbing or switching at virtually all affected plants in the 31 Eastern States. Cost tradeoffs occur between $30 and $40-plus per ton FOB mine in Central Appalachia ($33-44-plus per tonne). 1/2 to 3/4 of total sulfur reductions comes from scrubbing, whose costs act as a cap on low-sulfur coal prices. In a severe environmental scenario, low- sulfur coal demand evaporates, replaced by very low-sulfur (0.7%) coal demand. Additional findings and implications of EPRI coal supply and market studies will be reviewed.

There has been a long history of ironmaking on the North East coast of England centered around the River Tees. The industry developed here because of the availability of good coking coals to the North in Co. Durham, and the discovery in 1851 of ironstone in the nearby Cleveland Hills, South of the .River. Cleveland ironstone is relatively poor in quality, with an iron content not exceeding h% and high proportion of sulphur and phosphorous. The iron exists in chemical association with alumina and silica, and physical beneficiation processes involve a serious loss in iron unless the upgrading is limited, when the economics of the process become doubtful. Over the years, richer foreign ores have replaced the local ironstone, and the last operating mine was closed in 1964.

This study characterizes the hydrogeochemistry of groundwaters near opalite-hosted epithermal hot-spring type mercury deposits in the Ivanhoe mining district, Elko County, Nevada. Local groundwaters generally range from Ca-HCO3 to Ca-Mg-Na-SO4 type waters with background mercury concentrations ranging from 0.014 to 0.32 ug/l. Leaching experiments conducted on mineralized rocks, using typical water chemistries to represent local groundwaters, yield total mercury concentrations ranging from 6.3 ug/l to 27.4 ug/l after one year of reaction. Geochemical modeling indicates dissolved mercury is dominated by HgO(,) and that precipitation of quicksilver controls mercury concentrations to an upper limit of 63 ug/l.

A previous report of the Bureau of Mines* has supplied data for the physical and chemical properties of samples of crude petroleum produced in the eastern fields of the United States. It was issued as a preliminary chapter of a bulletin which is to cover the results of a survey of the entire country. The present report is a second preliminary chapter including figures that are available for the producing fields of the Rocky Mountain district. Work is being continued. with a series of samples from the States of Kansas and Oklahoma which will be described in a third preliminary chapter, to appear at a subsequent date. Acknowledgments. The obtaining of samples was rendered possible through the courtesy of representatives of a number of producing and refining companies operating in the Rocky Mountain district. A rational approach to the selection of the appropriate perforator to use in each specific zone of an oil well is presented. The criteria presently in use for this choice bear little resemblance with actual down-hole condilions. These environmental conditions affect the elastic properties of rocks. One of these elastic properties, acoustic velocity, is suggested as the leading parameter to adopt for the choice of a perforator because, being currently measured in the natural location of the formation, it takes into account all of the effects of compaction, saturation, temperature, etc., which are overlooked in the laboratory. Equations and curves in relation with this suggestion are given to allow the prediction of the depth of perforation of bullets and shaped charges when an acoustic log has been run in the zone to be perforated. INTRODUCTION When an oil company has to decide on the perforator to choose for a completion job, I wonder if it is really understood that, to date, there is no rational way of selecting the right perforator on the basis of what it will do down-hole. This situation stems from the fact that the many varieties of existing perforators, bullets or shaped charges, are promoted on the basis of their performance in the laboratory, but very little is said on how this performance will be affected by subsurface conditions such as the combination of high overburden pressure and high temperature, for example. The purpose of this paper is to show the limitations of the existing ways of evaluating the performance of perforators, to show that performances obtained in laboratories cannot be extended to down-hole conditions because the elastic properties of rocks are affected by these conditions and, finally, to suggest and justify the use of the acoustic velocity of rocks, as the parameter to utilize for the anticipation of the performance of a perforator in true down-hole environment. EVALUATING THE PERFORMANCE OF A PERFORATOR It is natural, of course, to judge the performance of a perforator from the size of the hole it makes in a predetermined target. Considering that the ultimate target for an oilwell perforator is the oil-bearing formation preceded in most cases by a layer of cement and by the wall of a steel casing, the difficulties begin with the choice of an adequate experimental target material. For obvious reasons of convenience, the first choice that came to the mind of perforator designers was mild steel. This is a reasonable choice for the comparison of two perforators in first approximation. Mild steel is commercially available in a rather consistent state and quality, and is comparatively inexpensive. The trouble with mild steel is that it represents a yardstick very much contracted; minute variations in depth of penetration or hole diameter and shape may be significant though difficult to measure. The penetration of projectiles in steel being a function of the Brinell hardness of the steel (Gabeaud, O'Neill, Grun-wood, Poboril, et al), it is often difficult to decide whether to attribute a small difference in penetration to a variation on the target hardness or to an actual variation on the efficiency of the projectile. Another target material which has been widely used for testing the efficiency of bullets or shaped charges in an effort to represent a formation—a mineral target as opposed to an all-steel target—is cement cast in steel containers. This type of target, although offering a larger scale for measuring penetrations, proved so unreliable because of its poor repeatability that it had to be abandoned by most designers. The drawbacks of these target materials, and particularly their complete lack of similarity with an oil-bearing formation, became so evident that a more realistic target arrangement was sought until a tacit agreement was reached between customers and designers of oilwell perforators on a testing target of the type shown on Fig. 1. This became almost a necessity about seven years ago because of the introduction of a new parameter in the evaluation of the efficiency of a perforator, the well flow index (WFI). "Many mines in South Africa were inappropriately closed and left unattended during the last century. These old mines are potential sources of environmental pollution and may pose a health risk to local populations, since the surrounds contain elevated levels of toxic elements. Soil from the old Edendale lead mine property in Mamelodi Extension 11, east of Pretoria, which was suspected to be contaminated with lead, was analysed. The mine, which primarily extracted galena, was decommissioned in 1938. During this study, the old mine property and surrounds were screened for zinc and lead using a field-portable X-ray fluorescence (pXRF) spectrometer. The metal concentrations, which ranged from 18 to 7 300 mg/kg for zinc and from 50 to 21 000 mg/kg, for lead, were plotted together with the GPS coordinates to produce a concentration distribution map for lead and zinc. This map revealed three anomalies of unacceptably high concentrations, possibly corresponding to areas where ore had been piled or dumped to waste from the old mine. Thirty-six of the soil samples that were analysed by pXRF on site were selected and analysed in the laboratory using inductively coupled plasmaoptical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) for verification purposes. The zinc and lead concentrations obtained from the two analytical methods were compared using linear regression analysis. Excellent correlation was obtained between the results from the two methods (r2 = 0.99 for zinc and r2 = 0.95 for lead). IntroductionEarly economic development in South Africa was based mainly on mining. However, these activities left a legacy of approximately 6 000 improperly closed mines scattered throughout the country (SAI, 2009; van Schie, 2012). Due to their proximity to settlements, these abandoned mines may pose a potential health risk to humans and an environmental hazard. Mining activities generate large amounts of waste, mostly in the form of overburden and process tailings, which often contain high concentrations of toxic elements. Bioavailable toxic elements can contaminate crops growing in the polluted area (Kala, 2010; Marwa, Meharg, and Rice, 2012) or eventually migrate and detrimentally affect the groundwater (Rösner and van Schalkwyk, 2000). Moreover, sulfides accumulated in mine waste generate acid minewater (Rösner and van Schalkwyk 2000). Unfortunately, owners of mines, closed before the promulgation of the Minerals Act more than twenty years ago (Act 50 of 1991), avoided the compulsory rehabilitation of the environment enforced by this legislation. Toxic elements, such as lead, which were confined within ores, may become exposed through mining and are therefore more easily mobilized within the environment. Elements essential to human and plant metabolism, such as zinc, when exposed by mining activities, may become hazardous due to elevated concentrations (Aslibekan and Moles, 2003; Wuana and Okiemen, 2011). Humans exposed to potentially toxic metals may experience harmful effects as discussed elsewhere (Nriagu and Pacynar, 1988; Wayne and Ming-Ho, 2005)."

When tunneling crews set world records in rates of advance by boring up to 403 ft in a single day and 6851 ft in a month, then the age of rapid under- ground excavation is near at hand with its attendant economies. Boring machines excavate tunnels with uniform diameters and smooth walls and only about 5% overbreak compared to 20% overbreak experienced by conventional drill-blast methods. This advantage minimizes the concrete required for lining and because a circular section is more nearly self-supporting there is less of a need for supports before the concrete is placed. In addition, laser beam guidance improves the accuracy of excavation with boring machines. In the first successful application of laser guidance for boring machines in the Navajo Indian Irrigation Project, the final excavation was within 5/8 in. of the established line and grade over a 10.079- ft advance.

With processing a variety of orebodies at Glencore’s Ernest Henry Mining (EHM) has come a changing mineralogy and more complex requirements for treatment in the concentrator. From mid-2013 and into 2014 the grind size required to achieve sufficient mineral liberation for production of a quality concentrate has reduced significantly. What was once a final P80 of 35–45 microns was forced to 20 microns. This has necessitated some creative changes to the flow sheet that previously had a 937?kW Vertimill regrinding a rougher concentrate to 40 microns. EHM is able to utilise an existing M10 000 3 MW IsaMill previously used for magnetite processing, to provide a quick convenient solution without large scale capital expenditures. Operating the Vertimill and IsaMill in parallel in closed circuit was successful at reducing the P80 of the regrind circuit to below 20 microns which increased the final concentrate grade by four per cent. This circuit and intermediate circuits used are discussed.
