The Bureau of Mines experimental blast furnace, Bruceton, Pa., was operated to determine the feasibility of replacing part of the burden coke requirements with solid fuels injected directly into the smelting zone. This report describes preliminary experiments and information resulting from such an interchange. These experiments were made on an all-sinter burden, using two parts sinter to one part fuel. Anthracite fines were injected intermittently into the smelting zone of the furnace by compressed air through auxiliary tuyeres. The interval between injection periods ranged from 5 to 15 minutes. A maximum of 28 percent of the stock column coke bur-den was replaced. This percentage replacement caused furnace malfunction, but the overall percentage of these experiments indicated that 20 to 24 percent of the coke requirements could be replaced in this way. The metallurgical coke consumption was decreased by as much as 377 pounds (25.3 percent) per ton of pig metal produced. Buckwheat anthracite No.4 was used in this experiment; however, such solids as bituminous coal or coke fines also could be used. The frequency as well as the quantity of solid fuel injected has a direct bearing on furnace performance.

It is possible to purify some liquid metals by exploiting the difference between the vapour pressure of the bulk metal and the minor constituents or impurities. The rates of purification can be improved by carrying out the process under reduced pressure, that is, so called, vacuum. Some commercial examples of vacuum refining are the purification of molten tin to eliminate trace amounts of lead and the refining of cobalt, also to remove lead. The objective of this paper is to review the basic theory behind vacuum refining technology in order to show how the feasibility of vacuum refining can be determined simply for a particular system by evaluating Olette's Volatility Refining Criteriont.

AngloGold operates various gold mines in South Africa, the largest of which are situated in the North West province. The impact of AngloGold Vaal River mining operations on the environment and, specifically, on aquifers and groundwater is assessed. The location of such aquifers and plumes is determined by remote-sensing and ground-sensing operations, followed up with the correct placement of monitoring boreholes from which information such as water rest levels, chemistry and geological data is gathered. This study utilises an integrated approach consisting of the following mutually reinforcing phases: Phase 1: Airborne multi spectral scanning; Phase 2: Airborne thermal remote sensing; Phase 3: Ground resistivity survey; Phase 4: Borehole placement; and Phase 5: Sampling and monitoring. The integration of the investigation tools and phases in use at AngloGold Vaal River has been found to be very useful in determining the exact sources of contamination, the direction of flow of such contamination, the positioning of interceptive measures and the analysis of such contamination. This adopted approach will enable the development of flow transport models that will further enhance our knowledge of contaminants in aquifers at the mine and enable management to conduct educated interventions.

The purpose of this paper is to present a contour map that shows the geographical variation in geothermal gradients in the Mid-Continent and Gulf Coast oil fields. Introduction Frequently there arises the need for an estimation of the temperature to be expected at a predetermined depth in working with a wildcat or in deepening old production into 'Ones that are relatively unknown. The study of geothermal gradients in oil fields has been made previously by many investigators. One of the pioneers in this work was C. E. Van Orstrand,' who, as well as most of the other investigators, was primarily interested in the relation between temperature and depth in a given locality. Between 192r and 1929, American Petroleum Institute Research Project NO. 25 fostered a thorough study of earth temperatures.2 K. IV. French did some work in California, the results of which were published in 1939.3 In most of these studies, an attempt was made to correlate temperatures in a rather localized area. This paper will show the results of an attempt to correlate temperature gradients over rather large Portions of the Mid-Continent and Gulf Coast area. Method of Obtaining Data It has been found that for complete thermal equilibrium to be established in a well, the well must stand undisturbed for a period of several hours to several weeks, depending upon the way the well was produced prior to the shut-in period. The data in this paper were obtained in conjunction with running pressures in wells or in taking samples of reservoir fluid. Glass maximum recording thermometers were used in all but a few instances. The wells had been shut in from one hour up to I. or 12 days. Since the wells were normal producing wells, some of the shut-in times undoubtedly were insufficient for complete thermal equilibrium to have been established and the temperatures measured do not necessarily represent the true earth temperatures. They do represent the temperature conditions that will be encountered in a well that is producing oil. The data, therefore, can be useful in working with or in estimating the temperatures to be expected in producing reservoirs. In obtaining a thermal gradient by dividing the difference in temperature of the formation and the mean annual surface temperature by the depth of the formation, one is assuming the depth-temperature line to be straight. Depth-temperature curves are almost straight lines (Fig. I). However, on close examination of accurate data, a slight curvature usually is observed. Most wells yield curves with slopes increasing with increasing depth. These curves are believed to be from wells that are in and are underlain by sedimentary material. Some few curves have slopes that decrease with increasing depth. These curves are believed to be from wells that are underlain rather closely by granite or some other igneous rock. Wood cribs have been the dominant form of supplemental support in coal mining for many years. Recently, there has been a renewed interest in prop supports as a replacement for wood cribbing due to the increasing cost of mine timber and engineering advancements in prop design to improve their stability and yield capability. Prop supports generally consume less material, can be installed in less time with less labor, and provide less restriction to mine ventilation than wood crib supports. Several prop supports are now available or under development'. These include: (1) Strata Products Propsetter? Support System; (2) Heintzmann ACS and Super Prop; (3) MBK-Hydraulik MEGA prop; (4) Advanced Mining Technology Inc. (AMTI) BTS Mortar prop; (5) Dywidag Coal Post; (6) Western Support Systems YIPPI support; and (7) "The Can" support by Burrell Mining Products. A comparison of the performance and cost of these support systems to wood cribs is made to provide mine operators with information needed to assess their application potential. Examples of current underground installations are discussed. Included in this assessment are full scale tests of these supports conducted in the U.S. Bureau of Mines' Mine Roof Simulator.

A number of investigators have studied the electrokinetic potential (?) of kaolinite as a function of pH. (1,2,3,4,5) These investigators all agree that the ? is negative except at quite acid pH values. The actual shapes of the curves reported by the several authors vary considerably. In spite of the general negative character of kaolinite the mineral has a rather high anion exchange capacity. (6,7,8) The cation exchange capacity is the lowest for the clay minerals. (6) It has been shown that anionic surfactants adsorb readily onto the mineral even up to neutrality, often in quantities exceeding the reported anion exchange capacity. (7,8) At least part of the anionic adsorption should be onto positive edge sites thought to exist on the mineral. (9,10) In the present study ? of kaolinite was measured as a function of pH using both the streaming potential (sp) and microelectrophoresis (m.e.p.) methods. In addition ? was measured at various pH values as functions of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and trimethyldodecylammonium chloride (TMDAC) concentrations. In some experiments decyl alcohol (DA) was added.

Although the metal silver has been known and prized from very ancient times, it is in the New World that the greatest silver camps have been found. This is shown in the following comparison: [] For the last few years, the World's annual production of silver has averaged about 240 million ounces troy. Of this total, the North American Continent contributes approximately three quarters, Mexico leading with 38 per cent, followed by the United States with 27 per cent, and Canada with nearly 9 per cent.[] Of the largest silver producers in Canada, the Sullivan takes first place. Although primarily famous as a lead and zinc mine, it produced, in 1926, more than 4.5 million ounces of silver. The Premier mine, in northern British Columbia, produced more than 3 million ounces. In Ontario, the largest producers in 1926 were the Nipissing mine, .with 1.9 million ounces, and the Keeley mine, with 1. 7 million ounces. The Mining Corporation produced 1.1 million ounces from mines in the Cobalt district proper, and an equal amount in South Lorrain; while from the Castle-Trethewey mine, in Gowganda, there was an output of slightly less than one million ounces.

Simultaneous alkaline pressure oxidation and sodium cyanide leaching treatments on a pyritic ore from Mulatos Mine located in Sahuaripa, Sonora, Mexico, were carried out. Mineral characterization, agitated leaching, hot cyanidation under atmospheric pressure conditions, simultaneous moderated pressure oxidation and leaching, and kinetic tests results are shown. The modified variables were temperature, pressure, and cyanide concentration. Characterization indicated that pyrite was the main mineral. Simultaneous pressure oxidation and leaching experiments were conducted in a temperature range of 40 to 80 °C, an oxygen pressure range of 87.5 to 200 psi, and cyanide concentration range of 0.8 to 1.2 weight percent in a 2-L Parr pressure reactor. Dissolution rates of 81 to 86 percent were achieved under the following conditions: 87.5 psi, 80 °C, 0.8 weight percent NaCN and processing time of one hour.

INTRODUCTION The trend in the coal industry for many years has been to make every- thing "bigger and faster." This also holds true for loading and storage facilities. Where once a 1 million st per yr (910,000 mt/yr) mine was rare, 3-5 million st per yr (2,730,000-4,550,000 mt/yr) mines are not uncommon today in the bituminous industry. This great increase in production, made possible through mechanization, requires greatly improved loading facilities just to get the coal away from the mine. Also, there is a trend to- ward combining production from more than one mine and cleaning it in a single preparation plant. In addition to increased loading capacity, this frequently necessitates raw-coal storage and blending facilities. The development of the unit train with its attendant economics has contributed more than any other factor to the widespread construction of storage and high-speed loading facilities. In the export market, the construction of ever larger coal colliers has added to the need for faster and larger loading facilities. In this climate of rapidly changing technology, any written ac-

IT has been suggested that boron in steel may form a film entirely around the austenite grain and that this film is responsible for the boron hardenability effect. In this connection, it is of interest to examine some of the ramifications of the concentration range of boron usually employed in hardenable steels, namely 0.0005 to 0.003 pct in a grain size range of ASTM grain size No. 1 through No. 10. The ratio of the iron to boron atoms and the number of unit cells of y iron per boron atom are listed in Table I. Even at the highest concentration considered, there are 1600 unit cells of y iron per boron atom, assuming a uniform distribution of boron. To investigate the possibility of the boron film formation, the number of boron atoms required to cover the grain surface completely must be calculated. With some transition elements, boron crystallizes in sheets composed of equilateral hexagons very much like graphite.' The selected value for the length of a side is 1.80Å. A simple calculation shows that two boron atoms cover an area of 8.4x l0 -16 sq cm. Table II lists the number of atoms of boron required for the formation of the monatomic film and Table III lists the number of boron atoms per grain. The hypothetical cases of 100 pct and 10 pct adsorption are calculated (all boron atoms in a grain and 10 pct of all boron atoms in a grain are located at the grain surface respectively). In Table 111, all combinations of grain size and composition below and to the left of the solid line (100 pct adsorption) and the dashed line (10 pct adsorption) are excluded as to the possibility of covering the grain surface with a continuous boron film. Thus, even for 100 pct adsorption, the smaller grains can form the film only at the higher concentrations. For the best case, grain size No. 1 and 0.0030 pct B, the required degree of adsorption is 3.9 pct. The above calculations deal only with the number of boron atoms required to form a monatomic film and do not take into account the mechanism of concentration of boron at the grain surface and the possible limitations to the extent of this concentration at a constant temperature, as for example in the austenitizing process. The question next arises as to how this surface concentration can occur during an isothermal treatment. Such surface enrichment of boron must occur through the phenomenon of surface adsorption, i.e., the concentration of solute atoms in solid solution in the vicinity of the surface without precipitation. A solute atom will tend to concentrate at the grain boundary if it reduces the interfacial tension. The possibility of adsorption effects involving both boron and carbon in iron has been discussed.' The fracture behavior of second phase particles and the role of matrix material on the wear resistances of the three Al-Si alloys containing 8, 17, and 19% Si were investigated using single pass scratch testing technique by applying normal loads between 0,15 and 5,00 N, in ambient air, Optical microscopy and SEM with EDS were used to analyze microstructures and morphologies of scratch tracks of the Al-Si alloys, The results showed that needle-like Si particles fractured under a load of 0.50 N, while block-like Si particles fractured at loads above 3,00 N, The Al-17% Si alloy with large number of needle-like particles (area fraction 16,4%) exhibited the highest coefficient of friction (0,8) and the widest scratch track, The Al-19%Si alloy containing high Si percentage and larger number of block-like particles (area fraction 16%) exhibited the lowest coefficient of friction (0,37) and the narrowest scratch track width. Presence of block-like particles was effective in reducing the amount of material transfer from Al-Si alloy surfaces to the counterface.

This report contains a cost estimate of the Bureau of Mines process for dewatering Alaskan placer effluent streams with polyethylene oxide (PEO). In this process effluent slurry is withdrawn from the placer plant pond system after a primary settling stage. A dilute PEO solution is injected into the slurry line to flocculate the fine, suspended solids. The flocculated solids are dewatered on a stationary screen. Clarified water is returned to the placer operation or discharged, while the 35 percent solids waste is pumped back into the mine cut. Cost estimates are presented for dewatering plants processing 1,000 gallons per minute of effluent slurry at three representative turbidity levels. Both the placer and the dewatering plants operate on the same 1-shift-per-day, 6-day-per-week schedule for the 100-day Alaskan operating season. Estimated fixed capital costs for these plants processing placer with effluent turbidities of 1,000, 3,000, and 5,000 nephelometric turbidity units (NTU) are approximately $29,000, $31,000, and $34,000, respectively, on a fourth quarter 1986 basis. Operating costs are estimated to be $0.34, $0.37, and $0.40 per thousand gallons of effluent slurry.

Mines with exceptionally low-strength roof (UCS <3,500 psi and CMRR <40) are much more likely to struggle with roof falls than other mines. Weak-roof is a particular problem for many room and pillar mines in the Midwestern and Northern Appalachian coal basins. Traditional roof support techniques are often not up to the challenge at these operations. This paper focuses on two mines, one operating in the Upper Freeport seam and the other in the Herrin No. 6 seam. Together, the two mines had more than 300 roof falls during a recent 5 year period. Each has experimented with a variety of roof bolt types and lengths, and with different supplemental supports. Detailed statistical analysis was conducted to determine which support combinations have proven to be most effective. Geology, horizontal stress, and time are also important at both mines. Successful control techniques have included; ? Identifying particularly troublesome lithologic roof units; ? Installing longer and stronger roof bolts; ? Installing supplemental support in intersections, and; ? Limiting the duration that a panel remains open. The lessons learned from these mines, and others like them, could help improve ground control safety for the entire U.S. mining industry.

The increase in productivity which has been achieved in mining during the past two decades has been attained largely through the replacement of manpower with electrical power. Power demands should continue to increase, requiring electrical distribution systems to be well planned to avoid inadequate voltage levels caused by underdesign and excessive costs resulting from overdesign. To aid the mining electrical engineer in designing proposed power systems or analyzing changes to existing systems, a digital computer program has been developed. This program will analyze alternating or direct-current networks with up to 10 voltage sources, 75 loads and 300 total segments. A maximum of nine levels of voltage is permitted in the system. This project was part of a package of programs developed at Virginia Polytechnic Institute (WI) for the mining industry under sponsorship of the Office of Coal Research. Included in this package are also programs to: 1. Schedule mine production and predict cost of mining 2. Simulate rail haulage systems 3. Simulate belt haulage systems 4. Analyze ventilation networks 5. Analyze pumping networks These programs are available from the Department of Mining Engineering, VPI, Blacksburg, Virginia 24061 for a nominal processing cost.

In June, 1911, the writer spent a few days in studying the economic geology of the vicinity of Park City. During this rather hurried visit a number of specimens of ore were collected, which have since been examind. The results of these investigations show that bournonite (PbCu-SbSa) is present in the ores in greater or less quantity. This fact has never before been reported, as far as can be learned. The failure to recognize this mineral is due to its similarity to tetrahedrite, with which it has probably been confused during a long period of years. Jamesonite (Pb2sb2s6) has been reported from the region in a rather doubtful manner, but the writer has seen it in notable amounts from several mines, and can offer the first analysis of this mineral from the district. Calamine (HzZn2SiO5) was found at one mine and has never been ecognized and reported from the district. Geogbaphy and Geology Park City, Utah, is located at an elevation of about 7,000 ft. above sea level on the eastern slope of the Wasatch mountains. It is situated approximately 25 miles southeast of Salt Lake City. &apos; The geology and ore deposits have been described in detail by Bout well and Woolsey.&apos; The mines visited are situated south-southeast from the town. The Silver King Coalition mine is located in Woodside gulch about 1 mile southeast of Park City, at an altitude of about 8,100 ft. The other mines visited were the Daly West and Quincy, which are in Empire canyon about 2 miles sontheast of the town, at elevations of 8,300 to 8,500 ft. respectively. The Daly Judge tunnel goes into the mountain from Empire canyon about 1 mile south of the city, at an altitude of 7,700ft.

DURING the winter and spring of 1917, an unprecedented number of underground fires occurred in the Butte district. With one exception, these fires were caused by the failure of electrical equipment, and called attention to the increased fire hazard in underground mining operations occasioned by the extensive use of electricity. Five local conditions that contributed toward a heavy fire risk were (1) The heavy continuous timbering necessary for mine supports; (2) the strong ventilating pressures in the shafts and main airways; (3) the subsidence and faulting movements in the country rock, which ruptured cables and displaced trolley and lighting wires; (4) the strongly acid mine waters, which quickly developed any weak points in the electrical insulation;(5) oxidation in old stopes containing large amounts of timber. In the summer of 1917, a comprehensive plan of fire prevention was begun by the Anaconda Copper Mining Co., which involved a thorough and intensive development of the preventive measures then in use. These were as follows: Fireproofing, remodeling and strengthening electrical insulations, extension of underground water system, control of ventilation, maintaining efficiency of fire-fighting crews, and reorganization of fire patrol.

INTRODUCTION Screening is a mechanical process that separates particles by size. Modern coal preparation is made possible by efficient sizing. Sizing of coal is defined in terms of the opening through which an individual particle will or will not pass, or as two openings, the larger of which passes the particle and the smaller of which retains the particle. Screening accomplishes sizing by passing coal of a wide range of sizes through a series of screens, each of a decreasing size. The individual screen discharges are then directed into different screen products for subsequent sale or processing. Screening in modern preparation plants is done for the following reasons: 1 ) Removal of fine coal before a size reduction step. 2) Size separation of the coal into a coarse and fine fraction for sized products or processing in coarse and fine coal circuits. 3) Recovery of heavy media from heavy media coal cleaning circuits. 4) Dewatering. 5) Rock and trash removal by handpicking on a screen. Fig. 8-1 is a generalized flowsheet of a plant showing the use of screens in the coal preparation process. Table 8-1 shows the vibrating screen equipment utilized in Fig. 8-1

Most publicity about the copper industry nowa- days is focused on the adequacy of ore reserves and on excessive mining capacity. These concerns, stemming from public awareness of actual and poten- tial shortages and oversupplies, relate to production rather than consumption. Perhaps the reason for this one-sided view is that copper is thought of as a commodity which is conspicuously traded in world markets, rather than as one of many industrial materials that serve today&apos;s rapidly changing tech- nology. Copper differs from other widely traded com- modities in that its real cost of production has pro- gressively increased since World War II. The reasons for the increase are identifiable by analyzing operations in one of the world&apos;s large producing centres, the copper province of Arizona. Another respect in which copper differs from some other com- modities is that increases in demand occur less auto- matically in the case of copper than they tend to in commodities whose consumption is more directly related to population growth. The copper industry&apos;s current inability to generate and attract needed investment capital is attributable to these differences between copper and other com- modities; it suggests that the concept of copper purely as a commodity is outdated. The key to the problem is better integration between the activities of copper producers and users. Depending on cir- cumstances, integration takes various forms- for example, investment tied to long-term sales con- tracts between producers in developing countries and consumers overseas; common ownership of pro- ducing and manufacturing facilities in industrialized

Molten salt electrolysis is a proven technology for the extraction of metals -- all the world&apos;s primary aluminum is produced in this manner. The unique properties of molten salts, also make them excellent media in which to treat a variety of forms of waste. Of special .note in this regard is electrolysis in molten oxides, a .concept put forward by. the author, initially as a ."clean technology" for producing primary metal. However, in the context of waste treatment, electroly-sis in molten oxides is a process offering the prospect of changing the. valence of dissolved heavy metals while making pure oxygen gas as the main by-product .Laboratory tests conducted at a temperature of 1550°C on chromate sludge dissolved in an melt composed of Al2O3 and MgO have confirmed electrochemical production of oxygen on a carbon-free anode.
