In transitional mineralization, the sill of the underlying variogram is relatively easily estimated, but the estimation of the nugget effect may be more difficult. This study aims to determine for massive copper deposits just how sensitive the estimations of ore reserve, economic copper content, total net value, and ultimate pit limits are to the errors of estimation in the nugget effect of the spherical variogram model. A massive copper deposit which has a log-normal distribution and a spherical variogram was simulated on a rectangular grid using the turning bands method. By using the three dimensional random kriging method, the mean block grades were estimated at four different sampling densities. The ultimate pit-limits were determined by using the two-dimensional dynamic programming algorithm. To calculate the estimation errors, the values obtained by using the actual nugget effect and structured component values were deducted from the estimations obtained using the incorrect nugget effect and structured component values. For isotropic massive copper deposits, it was found that the ratio of the nugget effect to the structured component of the spherical variogram has no significant effect on either the block grades estimated by the kriging method or on the ultimate pit limits.

For centuries tunnellers have made use of the experience of miners. In West German coalmining tunnellers have returned the impulses in recent years by giving the miners valuable stimuli with the result that a technology has evolved which benefits drill and blast heading, opens the door to TBM heading and has developed special measures for difficult strata conditions in deep coal mines. WHAT DO THESE ROCK HEADINGS LOOK LIKE? The main roadways dealt with in this paper have crosssections of 20 to 40 m2, big enough to allow the massive airflows needed to aircondition the mines. Because of the difficult strata conditions they have to be supported: in shotfired headings mainly with multi-element arches, in TBM headings with rings of 6 to 6.5 m diameter. In West German coalmining the majority of rock headings are blasted. The proportion of rock headings driven by TBM was 11 % in 1980 and 16 % in 1981, a rising trend expected to continue. Drill and blast headings Drill and blast headings are normally equipped with two or three-boom electro-hydraulic jumbos, electro-hydraulic crawler-mounted loaders with 1.2 m3 shovel capacity, a movable working platform and both chain and belt conveyors for dirt clearance to the minecar loading point. Fans and air-condition plant complete the equipment. Spacing between arches is usually 0.8 m. Investment for this type of mechanisation works out at around 1.3 m DM.

The Horn Island gold and mineral field produced 194 kilograms of gold in the 4 years subsequent to its discovery in 1894, from an area of shallow workings 1.5 kilometres x 0.5 kilometres. Gold deposits in the adjacent Prince of Wales, Hammond and Possession Islands also drew attention at that time.These islands form part of a Carboniferous sequence of ignimbrites (Torres Strait Volcanics) intruded by the Badu Granite and minor volcanics within the Cape York-Oriomo Ridge. Gold is associated with the epithermal stages of igneous activity. Recent exploration has defined sub-horizontal zones of disseminated gold mineralisation in the sub-surface, as well as reserves in the outcropping sub-vertical structures mined in the past. Released estimates of 170,00 tonnes proven ore and 550,000 probable ore at 4 grams per tonne gold, have been established.Gold is mostly contained in quartz vein stockworks and hydrothermal breccias within the intensely propylitised medium grained granites which form the local host rocks within the coarse grained Badu Granite. Associated vein minerals are sulphides (primarily of lead, zinc and iron) and calcite. Various intrusions of porphyry, aplite and granodiorite occur through the prospect area.

The definition of advanced materials used here is one that has been adopted by the U. S. Bureau of Mines: Those materials which have been developed over the past 30 years or so, and which are being developed at present, that exhibit greater strength, higher strength-density ratios, greater hardness, and/or one or more superior thermal, electrical, optical, or chemical properties, when compared with traditional materials.

"Certain northern Saskatchewan uranium ores have a high content of nickel and cobalt which offer the potential for recovery as a by-product to uranium. A nickel/cobalt recovery process has been developed as a viable method of recovering a marketable concentrate from typical uranium raffinate solution.Impurities are first removed from the raffinate and the pure solution is then treated with sodium carbonate to recover a bulk nickel/cobalt carbonate precipitate for sale to a primary nickel producer. All contaminants of concern are removed to very low levels and the product is free of radioactive contamination with gamma emissions significantly below natural background. Cost estimates have shown that installation of a nickel/cobalt recovery circuit within a uranium process plant is economically feasible.The testwork that led up to the selected process is described along with recommendations for further investigations such as additional testing of hydroxide precipitation as a possible viable alternative to carbonate. The selected process is described and project economics are briefly reviewed.PROCESS TEST PROGRAMBackgroundExtensive metallurgical research has been performed over the years to develop a process for recovering uranium from the Midwest deposit in northern Saskatchewan. During the course of this research, a certain amount of information became available which suggested that recovery of nickel and cobalt from uranium raffinate could be economically feasible. It was decided to undertake a test program which would investigate methods of separating nickel and cobalt from radioactive and other metal contamination to permit production of a saleable product.Available technology suggested that three general approaches could be taken to recover nickel and cobalt. The first and simplest approach would be to selectively precipitate the impurities of concern, primarily arsenic, iron and radium, and then recover a bulk concentrate from the purified raffinate. The second approach would be to purify the raffinate and then remove cobalt from solution by solvent extraction producing pure nickel and cobalt solutions for further treatment. The third approach would be to precipitate all metals from solution and then selectively re-dissolve nickel and cobalt in ammoniac solution which would be further treated by solvent extraction for nickel recovery, leaving cobalt for further treatment."

In the Bureau of Mines investigations of respiratory apparatus, a laboratory study of dust respirators has been conducted, and the results will be published in detail as a technical paper. Many industrial dust respirators, and many fabrics and filtering materials were tested. The principal results of these tests, and the conclusions drawn from them, are presented below. Reference to the patent literature discloses numerous types of dust respirators, mostly based on the filter principle. The present study included only representative filter-type respirators, purchased on the market.

A new type of solution calorimeter has been constructed to measure heats of mixing, enthalpy increments, and heats of fusion, formation, and reaction at temperatures above 1000°C. With it, measurements hove been made of the partial molar heats of mixing joy tin in the Cu-Sn system from 0 to 13 at. pet Sn at 1127°C and fir nickel in the Cu-Ni system from 0 to 9 at, pet Ni at 1200°C. The integral molar heat of mixing for the Cu-Sn system is strongly negative with a calculated minimum value corresponding to the composition Cu3Sn. The integrnl molar heat of mixing for the Czi-Ni system is slightly positive at these temperatures. These integral molar values have been measured with a probable error less than 30 cal per g-atom at an atom fraction of nickel or tin equal to 0.1. The estimated probable error for the Cu-Sn system is approximately 450 cal for a measured heat of solution of approximately 9000 cal. For the Cu-Ni system it is approximately 700 cal for a measured heat of' solution of approximately 60 cal. A new type of heat of solution calorimeter was designed and constructed to provide a more accurate experimental method for determining heat effects at high temperatures, (T > 1000°C). With it, partial molar heats of mixing, enthalpy increments, heats of fusion, and heats of formation and reaction for metal systems can be measured directly. Previously it has been necessary to rely upon the use of the dropping calorimeter or the van't Hoff equation applied to equilibrium data for this information. For the most part equilibrium data are scarce and difficult to obtain in many cases, and it has been necessary to rely upon the "method of mixtures" for the desired enthalpy measurements. An earlier study1 provides a prototype for this work. The "method of mixtures" as outlined by K. K. kelley,2 "consists of dropping the substance under investigation from a furnace, with controlled and measured temperature, into a calorimeter operating at or near room temperature.'' In this manner the change in the total heat content (enthalpy) of the substance between the temperature of the furnace and that of the calorimeter is determined. In order to determine high-temperature heats of mixing, enthalpy increments, and heats of fusion, formation, and reaction, it is necessary to take the difference between two such measurements, one before and one after the occurrence of the enthalpy change being studied. The desired enthalpy change is then the small difference between two large numbers. Small errors in the large numbers are included as large errors in this small difference. It is this difficulty that must be avoided for accurate measurement of the desired functions. The procedure with the new solution calorimeter consists of dropping the substance under investigation from a furnace, with controlled and measured temperature, into a solution calorimeter operating in the temperature range of 1000o to 1200°C. Each module is intended to be completed in roughly 10 or 15 minutes, so a Toolbox Training session can be conducted once a week for the entire year. Each session counts toward your employee’s 8-hour annual MSHA refresher training, thus saving an entire day of work.. The modules are used to refresh employees on the procedures, policies, and practices of working safely at a specific mine site and can easily be tailored to fit conditions and situations found on your property. Every module follows the same format, so that as the weeks pass, miners will start to approach every safety situation in the same way. A typical Toolbox Training session contains five basic steps that cover all the information in the module. 1. Identification of the hazard and discussions about the types of injuries typically associated with the hazard. 2. Discussions of some of the causes of the hazard. The MSHA example included with each module should be referenced. 3. After the hazard and accident has been explained and understood, discussions about best practices and tips for avoiding a similar accident. 4. Review of similar conditions or near misses from your mine site using the leading questions on the form to start a discussion. Specific examples of equipment or structures on the site that could lead to the same accident should be discussed. The blank space on the module is used to add your own remarks and questions to supplement the given information. 5. Miners fill out the training record on the back of the form with name, initials, and date of training session. The modules are designed to be kept in a standard three-ring binder and easily photocopied. This way, the same set of modules can be used for years to come. A blank form is included that can be used to create more Toolbox Training modules. The key component of Toolbox Training is to start a discussion among employees that will allow them to see the hazards around them every day and respond to these hazards in a safe and consistent manner. To start a discussion, ask questions that need more than a one-word response. Get the miners to talk about similar situations from their own experiences and give suggestions about how to fix the hazards around them. Toolbox Training is a quick and effective way to cover specific mining hazards, but it only works if miners are involved in the discussion.

[Notwithstanding the fact that it is now fairly generally recognized that widespread explosions can be almost absolutely prevented in coal mines by efficient rock-dusting and that this rock-dusting can be done thoroughly at a cost which should seldom exceed 1 cent per ton of coal mined, a recent survey of the situation by the Safety Division of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, following a similar survey by the Bureau in the fall of 1925, shows that while some progress is being made by our coal-mining people, many entire mining communities are lamentably slow in taking advantage of one of the most effective safeguards available. Much of the information as to the extent of rock-dusting was obtained through the various State inspection departments. Table 1 shows that in the fall of 1925 about 92 coal companies in the United States were using rock-dust ad that in the summer of 1927 the number had increased to 239, or about 160 per cent increase. Similarly, from the fall of 1925 to the summer of 1927 the number of mines using rock-dust increased from 177 to 463, or about 160 per cent increase. This appears to be a decidedly healthy increase, but when it is considered that in 1926 (the last date for which figures are available) there were 7,141 bituminous mines operating and that there were only 463 or 61 par cent, which were even reported to Ice using rock-dust to any extent whatever, the forgoing figures as to progress are by no means impressive or even satisfactory.]

Due to ever-increasing stripping ratios associated with the No. 8 Seam at the San Juan Mine surface operation, BHP Minerals decided to implement longwall mining for the extraction of the substantial future reserve base. In preparation for longwall developments, BHP opted to first develop a small-scale pilot operation within the No.8 Seam on an adjacent lease to address geotechnical/geological concerns related to ground control, subsidence, caving, panel and entry design, and operational issues related to entry development and proper face equipment selection. Room-and-pillar mining methods are currently being utilized to develop a full extraction panel for a wide range of geological, geotechnical, and geomechanical evaluations aimed at characterizing and assessing the mineability of the No.8 Seam. Variable roof and floor conditions, coupled with a multi-bench coal seam, require that a number of mining horizons, opening geometries, and roof and rib support fixtures be evaluated relative to expediting gate and panel developments. Issues related to development of timely caves in areas subject to overlying sand channel deposits will also be addressed through underground in-seam stress and deformation measurements, and interburden and surface subsidence monitoring. This information will ultimately be used to evaluate face support and gate and panel pillar/entry development requirements. The current depositional model for the property, developed from an aggressive drilling, highwall mapping, and lineament evaluation program, will also be refined during the Pilot Mine study through extensive in-trine mapping, additional roof and floor drilling and physical property testing, and determination of the in situ principal horizontal stress field.

The controlled addition of ammonia to cyanide solutions inhibits the leaching of copper minerals but extracts up to 80% Au using as little as 10% of the cyanide compared with conventional cyanidation of copper-gold ores. The solubility of copper minerals and copper speciation in solution is dependent on NH3, CN-, pH and Eh. Rotating disc and electrochemical studies show that gold is leached by a mixed Cu-CN--NH3 complex with either Cu(II) or O2 as oxidant. This complex is slowly oxidised to CuCN and Cu(OH)2 by air.

These mines, which belong to the Burma Corporation, Ltd., formerly a London company now incorporated in Rangoon, Burma, are situated in the semi-independent state of Tawng-Peng, one of the small divisions comprising the northern Shan states and erroneously known as part of Upper Burma. Bawdwin is approximately 23' 6' N. latitude and 97" 20' E. longitude, 450 miles north of Rangoon, 169 miles northcast of Mandalay and 50 miles south and west of the Province of Yunnan, China (see Fig. 1). Although the mines were worked by the Chinese during the Ming Dynasty, 1412 A. D., the most extensive operations took place between 1796 and 1851, when the mines contributed largely to the silver market of China. During the reign of Tung Chik, 1868 A. D., they were abandoned partly because of the Mohammedan rebellion in Yunnan, which made life and property insecure, but largely because of the difficulty of operating the mines on account of water and poor ventilation. Since that time practically nothing was done, although the Burmese kings are said to have made several sporadic attempts to work the mines, until 1891 when Europeans were attracted by the great slag dumps (assaying about 40 per cent. lead) which the Chinese had left after extracting the silver. After a railroad and smelter had been built and 200,000 to 300,000 tons of slag smelted for lead, exploration work was started and old workings cleaned out in order to locate the remnants of the orebody that it was supposed the Chinese had left. After two years of most discouraging work, the remains of a large orebody was discovered by the Dead Chinaman Tunnel or what is the 171-ft., or No. 2 level adit. The legacy of orphaned/abandoned mines, with their associated environmental liability, human health concerns and the financial costs of clean up is a serious issue facing Canada. In 1999 and 2000, a number of stakeholders put forth requests to Mines Ministers to establish a joint industry-government working group, assisted by other stakeholders to review the issue of abandoned mines. The Ministers supported this initiative and asked that a multi-stakeholder workshop be organized to identify key issues and priorities. The Workshop on Abandoned Mines, held June 2001 in Winnipeg, developed consensus, guiding principles and recommendations that were presented at the Mines Ministers? Conference, September 2001. Ministers agreed on the importance of a large-scale program for the rehabilitation of orphaned/abandoned mines sites. A multi-stakeholder Orphaned/Abandoned (O/A) Mines Advisory Committee was formed and a plan was developed to study various issues relating to the implementation of remediation programs across Canada. Three task groups were formed to address the following key areas: Information Gathering; Community Involvement; and Barriers to Collaboration. The presentation will include a summary of the results of the three projects and the future work plan for the program.

Previous Bureau of Mines studies of vibrations from quarry blasts have shown that the square root of the charge-weight may be used to group particle velocity data from various charge sizes, and that empirical propagation equations may be used to estimate vibration amplitudes. Particle accelerations of the sandstone roof of the White Pine Copper mine, Michigan, were measured to determine whether similar propagation equations may be developed for underground mine blasts. Vibration data from White Pine blasts were best grouped by scaling with the square root of the charge weight. Cube root scaling did not effectively group the data. The empirical propagation equation AW1/2 = 50,000 (R/W1/2)-2.21 where A is peak-to-peak acceleration in g's, W is the zero-delay charge-weight in pounds, and R is the distance from the blast in feet, may be used to estimate maximum vibration amplitudes from production sized blasts. Vibration differences among headings and types of explosive charge (AN-FO and dynamite), while statistically significant, were not a major factor in the estimation of maximum vibration amplitudes with an empirical propagation equation. Vibration differences between types of explosive charge were larger than the differences among headings, indicating that some reduction of vibration amplitude might be gained by using AN-FO rather than dynamite. Acceleration records from both White Pine's AN-FO and dynamite production blasts show that high intensity vibrations from the delayed portions of the blast (each delay interval = 25 milliseconds) were separate events, and that the zero-delay portion of the blast produced the maximum vibration amplitudes. If the pull of the underground blast round can be maintained, a reduction of the zero-delay charge-weight may effectively reduce the maximum vibration amplitude of the blast.

"Important stratabound lead-zinc deposits in southeastern B. C. occur in rocks that range in age from Proterozoic Helikian to Middle Cambrian. The Sullivan deposit, and similar but smaller deposits in the Sullivan area are the only important deposits that occur in clastic rocks with little carbonate content. The highly deformed and metamorphosed Shuswap deposits, of probable Hadrynian to Helikian age, are in mixed marble, calc-silicate gneiss and pelitic schist assemblages, rocks transitional between clastics and carbonates. Deposits in younger rocks, such as the Kootenay Arc deposits in the Lower Cambrian Badshot-Reeves Formation and the Monarch -Kicking Horse deposits in Middle Cambrian dolomite, are hosted by platformal carbonate rocks.An important regional control for the distribution of deposits appears to be a northeast-trending tectonic zone that crosses the Rocky Mountains and the Purcell Mountains just south of the Sullivan area, and projects southwestward toward the Salmo camp at the southern end of the Kootenay Arc. Pronounced northeast-trending gravity and magnetic anomalies, basic volcanism of Hadrynian age (the Irene volcanics west of Creston) and a preferred alignment of Mesozoic granitic rocks indicates that the zone coincides with deep crustal structures. Within the zone are dramatic and abrupt thickness and facies changes in Hadrynian Windermere rocks and lower Paleozoic rocks, and on the east side of the Rocky Mountain Trench in Helikian Purcell Supergroup rocks, indicating that block-faulting was active intermittently within the zone from Helikian through to lower Paleozoic time. Right-lateral and reverse movements occurred on northeast-trending tear faults within the zone in Mesozoic time."

This paper describes development of a cost report that is descriptive, logically oriented, and concise. Since the costs involved relate to mining, this reporting technique could help bridge any possible communications gap between "mining men" and computer personnel, at the same time giving the computer-oriented mining individual information to assist him in his job performance. As computers become entrenched in the mining world, meaningful report assimilation becomes a major task. No one should be more capable of defining required results than the man requesting a report. If he is able to clearly state his needs and has researched his problem, it will be reflected in the computer output. During 1970, The Anaconda Company's Berkeley Pit Operation, at Butte, Montana, received many different computer-generated equipment cost reports. Up to thirty-six different components for each type (class) of pit equipment contributed cost data to the Berkeley Pit cost system files for both operating and repairs during current month, year-to-date and accumulation-to-date time periods. This reporting approach was taken to facilitate analyzing this voluminous data. SUMMARY A Major Component Cost Analysis (Exhibits 6-A thru 6-C) developed by arranging the top ten operating and repair percentages (component cost divided by total cost) in descending order, and then accumulating these percentages to a possible one-hundred percent. Thallium is one of the rarer metals that has come into commercial importance in recent years. Although the element was first reported by Crookes in seleniferous deposits in lead chambers of a sulfuric acid plant in the Harz Mountains of Germany, it had no commercial significance until about 190O because of the high cost of extraction. Thallium occurs widely in the earth's crust but is found in such low concentrations that it is recovered only as a byproduct from processing other elements. There are no domestic ores of thallium; the entire output in this country is supplied by the American Smelting & Refining Co. as a byproduct of its cadmium operations at Globe, Colo. Thallium also is recovered from the flue dusts of sulfuric acid works in which thallium-bearing materials are used and as a byproduct of the lithopone industry. This paper describes methods for recovery of thallium from 'white arsenic" and lead Cottrell-precipitator dust of the American Smelting & Refining Co., lead smelter, Murray, Utah. Owing to an enlarged market for thallium because of increased military requirements and expanded peacetime uses, the Salt Lake Station of the Bureau of Mines surveyed the occurrence of thallium in ores, concentrates, and smelter products from all parts of the nation and found the most promising source was certain smelter products of the American Smelting & Refining Co. plant, Murray, Utah. Much of the thallium was being lost in marketed arsenic products; therefore, this investigation was undertaken to develop methods for recovering the thallium.

Roof-rock instability in advancing sections of underground coal mines is a major contributing factor to accidents resulting in fatalities and injuries. Such roof-rock conditions can also result in loss of production due to additional cleanup time and increased amounts of reject material. The Bureau of Mines is investigating fundamental geologic factors affecting coal mine roof-rock instability in order to develop techniques to predict zones of potential unstable roof-rock. Two distinct directional trends of unstable shale roof-rock in a mine working the Upper Kittanning Coalbed are delineated: one trend is associated with the sandstone-shale transition zone, the other with a fault system. The unstable shale roof-rock associated with the transition zone, a consequence of differential compaction, is comprised of slickensided roof-rock. Whereas, the unstable shale roof-rock associated with the fault system, a consequence of structural deformation of the strata, is comprised of fault planes. These faults, small in comparison to the sandstone-shale transition zone, are difficult to delineate with a standard drilling program. Trends of the transition zone associated with the sedimentary facies change are projected into unmined portions of the coalbed with the aid of exploration core data.
