MUCH study has been given by engineers in general, and investigators in particular, to the concentration of stress which occurs under load in structural members having irregularities in section such as notches, shoulders, key ways, tool marks, etc. The result of the effect of both fresh and salt water corrosion upon the endurance properties of various metals and alloys has been ably determined and the general laws underlying these phenomena carefully pointed out by McAdam. From a practical standpoint, 'however, it is after all the endurance value of corroded, non-symmetrical sections which is most pertinent. In the experiments about to be described rotating cantilever specimens of nickel steel of the 3.5 per cent nickel ' 0.35 per cent carbon type have been used. These were machined from bars l 1/8. in. dia. and 9% in. long and were heat-treated by quenching in oil from 825 deg. C. followed by reheating to 650' C. and oil quenching. The lower levels at the CSA Mine have been developed to mine reserves between theNo.7 level and No.9 level.Work on major excavations for the project began during 1982 with the develop-ment of the crusher chamber, on No.9 level. The brows and walls were pre-dowelled to improve stability before mining by mass blasting techniques.At the same time work commenced on theextension of No.2 Shaft from No.7 level toNo.11 level. The shaft was stripped, using hand held drilling, to a raise bored holeand concrete lined to a diameter of 5.5 metres. Plats were developed at No.8 level, No.9level and the loading station.

Two-phase (water and air) flow in a self-aspirated WEMCO flotation machine has been investigated using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The geometric model is a replica of a 300 m3 cell. A 72-degree sector containing two blades of the ten-blade rotor has been modeled and periodic boundary conditions are applied in the circumferential direction. Simulation of a sector of the machine allows acceptable resolution of the mean flow field using 4x106 grid points. The flow is modeled by Euler-Euler approach, and transport equations are solved using a commercial software ANSYS-CFX5 [1]. Unsteady simulations have been performed. In a self-aspirated machine, airflow rate is not known a prior; it is an output from the CFD simulation. Uniform mean bubble diameter of 0.7 mm has been specified as an input for the simulation. Air flow rate and power consumption have been monitored with time, and results indicate a stable operation. Air volume fraction contours and velocity field in different regions of the machine are presented and discussed.

The breakage parameters of phosphate ore were determined by batch first-ordering grinding studies in a laboratory ball mill according to the Austin, Klimpel, and Luckie procedures. The results were scaled to five larger mills of 0.56, 0.82, 8.36, 4.41, and 5 m in diameter assuming equilibrium ball charges for the full-scale mills. The results were used to predict product size distributions and capacities for batch grinding in the smaller mills and open-circuit grinding in the larger mills. The predicted capacities were in approximate agreement with experimental values except for the 5-m diam mill. The Bond method gave capacity predictions that were 4570 to 150% too high.

A questionnaire was sent out to three classes of mines to determine the extent of the heat problem in U.S. and Foreign underground mines. The following list shows the replies received from this questionnaire, however not all the known hot mines in the US replied. A complete listing of the results can be seen in Appendix I. 1) US coal mines - 37 replies 2) US non coal mines - 23 replies 3) Foreign non coal mines - 36 replies. At the present time there are approximately eleven non coal and one coal mine in the US experiencing heat problems which require special efforts to maintain an acceptable working place climate. However since the survey was completed some of them have been placed on standby. The Mine Safety & Health Administration (MSHA) does not have any specific regulations relating to heat stress. Informally the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists guidelines are followed which use wet bulb globe temperature (WBGT) with values ranging from 26.7°C to 31.1°C for a moderate workload, and different rest regimes. An MSHA report (Misaqi 1976) recommended that conditions should not exceed 26.1°C WBGT for men and 24.4°C WBGT for women. However, quite recently the organizations involved with planning two of the proposed nuclear waste repositories in the United States, have opted for the criteria of an air cooling power of 300 w/m2, and a WBGT of 27'C respectively.

"PAH compounds have been found in the exhaust from all types of engines burning hydrocarbon fuels . They have also been found in the air over cities and in water. The authors report on a study to assess the concentrations of twelve different PAH compounds in several different environments in dieselized underground mines. In addition, the differences in the PAH levels and distributions in different mines will be demonstrated. Finally, the influence of blasting and the type of diesel engine used as well as the effect of catalytic converters in the exhaust system on the PAH concentration in the mine will be discussed.IntroductionMining methods have been altered significantly in the last 25 years; i.e ., the tools and machinery used underground have changed from electrically operated trains and other equipment to diesel-powered equipment. This has been done for several reasons: 1) economics, 2) convenience and 3) safety. Today, most mines are heavily committed to using diesel equipment.Although the introduction of diesel equipment has revolutionized mining methods and has been a tremendous boon to the mining industry, it has also created new problems. These problems arise because the exhaust from diesel engines contains several pollutants which can be hazardous to the health of the miners. These pollutants are CO2, CO, NO., SO2, oxygenated hydrocarbons produced during the buring process and unburned hydrocarbons. There are two classes of hydrocarbons, of which polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs or PNAs) are a part."

THE fundamental mechanism of the deformation of zinc has been thoroughly described by several prominent investigators, particularly Mark, Polanyi, and Schmid,1 Mathewson and Phillips,2 and Schmid and Wasserman.3 The deformation of zinc occurs primarily through slip along basal planes {00. 1 }, and secondarily through twinning on pyramidal planes of the form { 10.2). In addition to these basic studies on single crystals, there have been a number of determinations4,5 of preferred orientations developed in rolled, polycrystalline zinc. In no case, to our knowledge, has there been described the development of oriented struc-tures in zinc as a result of a, systematic series of rolling treatments. The work included in the present paper shows the changes in orientation produced in a zinc alloy by successively increasing degrees of cold-rolling reduction. This alloy has the same crystal form, hexagonal close-packed, as zinc, but its susceptibility to hardening for a given degree of working is much greater because of its higher recrystal-lization temperature.

The wind tunnel has been used extensively for mine ventilation research and continues to be a valuable tool. The advent of the powerful personal computer has reduced the use of wind tunnels because several flow problems car be simulated and investigated quickly. This paper describes the recent design and construction of a wind tunnel which is now being used for mine ventilation aerodynamic research and teaching purposes. The wind tunnel has a square cross section measuring 900 by 900 mm and is 8485 mm long from the entrance to where it joins the fan. The tunnel was designed as an open circuit suction type and is attached to a 7.5 kW variable pitch axial flow fan capable of producing over 6 m3/s of airflow. The entire length of the wind tunnel can be used for flow investigations and all activities are visible since the sides are made of plexiglass. Results are presented from the test program to show that even without honeycombs and screens air flow symmetry is achieved.

QUANTITATIVE methods were used to good effect in the earliest days of metallography1-3 but they mysteriously passed into virtual disuse until the important paper4 by Howard and Cohen in 1947. Various devices for the measurements of integrated linear intercepts have been constructed, primarily by petrographers. The hydraulically operated stage designed by the writer5 was satisfactory, but prolonged use caused air bubbles to become entrapped, which introduced back-lash. A new stage has been constructed which avoids this defect and provides better integration when measuring directional structures. This utilizes a circular traverse, and integration is achieved by counting electrical pulses produced by a photocell and a light chopper.* The stage is shown diagramatically in Fig. 1 and in photograph, Fig. 2. It is of simple construction. Mounted on a plate with clamps to fit the stage of a standard metallurgical microscope is a worm and 100-tooth worm gear, the latter supporting the specimen to be measured. ABSTRACT: The ground-source heat pump is a low-carbon technology that uses the earth’s renewable geothermal energy to heat and cool buildings, with an ef?ciency 3 to 4.5 times that of conventional systems. These high performances are achieved by exchanging heat with the earth using a ?uid that is groundwater, surface water or closed loop water. Expensive installations, such as water wells or buriedcoils, are however necessary to transport the ?uid in and out of the earth, making ground-source heat pumps more costly than conventional systems. Installation costs can be reduced in mining environments due to the abundance and the accessibility of resources to be used with heat pumps. Examples of system design calculations using data from the Mouska and Doyon mines in Abitibi show signi?cant installation cost savings using dewatering mine water or ground heat exchangers installed below oxidizing waste rocks. Ground-source heat pump technology is reviewed and scoping calculations are presented to illustrate how such systems can be installed in mining environments.

ALL of the matters so far taken up by the Institute Committee on Stabilization of the Coal Industry will be of help, but it seems to be that under present conditions not very much can be expected until the railroad situation has been improved. As an instance of this, I would cite the fact of our experience at our mines in West Virginia and Kentucky. During 1917 and 1918 at our West Virginia plants we produced for our own consumption, practically entirely in the Chicago district, about 4,750,000 net tons of coal. In 1919 our output was reduced to 3,500,000 tons, this being caused partly by the shortage of orders in the few months following the armistice, but more particularly by The car shortage which began last September and continued throughout the remainder of the year, with the exception of December. This car shortage has been more acute since the first of the year, and while we now have an actual capacity here of 20,000 tons daily and have the equipment to produce it, with the possible exception of a few houses, we are able to average only about 12,000 tons, and in consequence, about 30 per cent. of our by-product ovens in the Chicago district are idle, and a number of blast furnaces are down for the want of coke. These figures, of course, refer to conditions before the strike of switchmen in April was started.

Since the advent of plate tectonic modelling, the Ramu-Markham valley has been thought the site of a classical island-arc/conti- nent collision zone. In this interpretation the units south of the Markham Valley are held to be island are / micrcontinental mate- rial accreted to Australia and those north of the valley are thought to represent a separate Finisterre island-arc terrane. Recent remapping by the Geological Survey of Papua New Guinea shows: (1) there is no terrane boundary along the Ramu-Markham valley (2) the Finisterre Volcanics are probably part of either a fore-arc sequence or oceanic plateau obducted onto a microcontinent/ volcanic-arc composite terrane, accreted to the continental Australian plate. A new tectonic model is proposed for northern PNG and involves: (I) Eocene to Late Oligocene subduction below a microcontinent remote from Australia to produce the Sepik are and related intrusives, the Finisterre Volcanics (fore-arc or possible oce- anic plateau), together with the Alife blueschist. (2) obduction of the Sepik arc in Late Oligocene-Early Miocene times over the advancing Australian plate. This resulted in crustal melting, some of the products of which are the Mid- dle to Late Miocene Akuna and Bismarck intrusive complexes of the Maramuni arc. (3) obduction of the Finisterre Volcanics began in Early Pliocene times and continues today. (4) post-Middle Miocene mineralisation is the result of melting after obduction of the Sepik microcontinent.

The subject of the constitution of copper-iron mattes has received considerable attention in recent years by Keller,' Belles,2 Hofman,3 and Gibb and Philp.4 Still more recently Friedrich, Röntgen, Wiedmann, Heyn and Bauer, and Leroux have published, in some instances, elaborate researches on the various systems of the sulphides, and the snlphides and their respective metals, which enter into the constitution of mattes, and have added very greatly to the knowledge of the subject. The work of Friedrich has been especially fruitful. But to' date no effort has been made to correlate the data obtained in the latter researches and apply them to the study of the product called " matte," which is made in such large quantities by copper- and lead-smelters. In this paper we propose to determine, by metallographic and chemical means, the constitution of copper-iron and copper-lead-iron mattes in the light of the recent data above mentioned. We do not discuss copper-nickel mattes or speisses (artificial arsenides). The paper is divided into three sections: I. A review and discussion of the various binary systems of the metallic sulphides, and the binary systems of various metals and their respective sulphides entering into the constitution of mattes; also a discussion of the physical properties of these sulphides. II. A description of the results obtained from the chemical and microscopic examinations of the samples of copper-iron and copper-lead-iron matte obtained from various plants.

This paper is presented from the viewpoint of the mill operator and maintenance supervisor. Its purpose is to highlight the things that have been accomplished by the mill designers to lighten the load for the maintenance superintendent and to reduce the overall costs for the plant operator. The complexity of plant design, the civil and structural engineering problems encountered when the satisfactory maintenance layout is accomplished are appreciated, and the writer is fully aware of the complexities of these problems. However, it is not the purpose of this particular paper to dwell upon these problems, nor to emphasize or de-emphasize the problems of the civil, mechanical and electrical engineers. It is simply that the paper will attempt to review what these people have accomplished in spite of the many technical problems. This paper then is prepared with the operator and maintenance people?s viewpoint. What is their definition of design for maintenance? It is the writer's interpretation that the various design concepts which mean improved maintenance are such items as (I) maintenance areas, (2) laydown space for maintenance materials in specific maintenance jobs, (3) the inclusion of bridge cranes in the plant and specific design of the craneways to accomplish flexibilities for the cranes, and (4) the location of the piece of equipment to allow maintenance people to work around the equipment - - - this specifically includes the orientation of the particular piece of equipment.

The AK6 kimberlite is situated 25 km south of the Debswana Orapa Mine in Botswana and was discovered by De Beers geologists in 1969 during the follow-up of geophysical targets in the Orapa area. The kimberlite was not extensively pursued at the time as the initial bulk sampling indicated it to be of limited size and low grade, factors largely contributed to by the basalt breccia capping. Completion of high resolution integrated geophysical techniques and drill bulk sampling to depth recovered 97 tons of kimberlite during 2003 and 2004, which led to the increased size and grade estimates. Bulk sampling by Large Diameter Drilling (LDD, 23 inch diameter) commenced in 2005; 13 holes were drilled to a cumulative depth of 3,699 m and 689 carats of diamonds were recovered. In July 2006 the De Beers Mineral Resource Classification Committee classified these Phase I LOO results at a High Inferred level with an average grade of 24 carats per hundred tonnes (cpht) at a bottom cut-off of +1 mm, and a modeled average diamond value of 150 dollars per carat. A second phase of LDO drilling was initiated in 2006, and bulk sampling by trenching commenced in 2007 in order to deliver a resource estimate at indicated level. An Indicated Resource of 11.1 million carats at an average grade of 22 cpht was declared for the deposit mining lease application lodged in 2007.

CRANGES in construction ideas and the continually rising costs of labour and conventional building materials, particularly since World War II, have prompted widespread investigations into the development and adaptation of new materials to meet the new requirements and to help reduce costs. Lightweight aggregates have been prominent in these investigations. The lightweight aggregates most commonly used today are foamed slag, cinders, pumice, diatomite, exfoliated vermiculite, expanded perlite, and bloated clay or shah. Lightweight aggregates contribute to the building industry in several ways: ( 1) in large structures the reduction in deadweight effected by the use of lightweight materials reduces the amount of reinforcing and structural steel necessary to support the structure; ( 2) the decrease in weight of lightweight blocks makes handling easier and faster; (3) pre-fabricated floor and roof slabs and tilt-up walls of lightweight concrete have become feasible and popular; ( 4) lightweight aggregate concrete has good nailability and is easily channelled; (5) concrete and plaster made with lightweight aggregate have good heat and sound insulation properties.

IN THE past year, Jaffee and Campbell&apos; and Finlay and Snyder2 reported on the mechanical properties of titanium-base alloys, some of which were in the same ranges of composition as are covered in this paper. In this paper, evidence confirming that given by Finlay and Snyder on the effects of carbon, oxygen, and nitrogen on titanium will be presented; and, in addition, new data will be given on the effects of these elements on the flow properties and phase transformation of titanium. Materials and Preparation of Alloys The preparation and general properties of iodide titanium have been adequately described elsewhere.&apos; , As-deposited iodide titanium rod, prepared at Battelle, of Vickers hardness less than 90 was employed as the base metal in the present work. This was the same material as that used by Finlay and Snyder.2 The probable analysis reported by them for standard quality metal holds here also: N 0.005 pct, 0 0.01 pct, C 0.03 pct, Fe <0.04 pct, A1 <0.05 pct, Si <0.03 pct, and Ti 99.85 pct. Carbon was added in the form of flake graphite supplied by the Joseph Dixon Crucible Co. Oxygen was added in the form of c.p. grade TiO, powder, produced by J. T. Baker Chemical Co. Nitrogen was added in Ti3N4 powder, supplied by the Remington Arms Co. Individual ingots weighed 7 or 8 g. Carbon, oxygen, or nitrogen was added by placing the corresponding powder in a capsule made from as-deposited iodide titanium rods and melting the capsule with the balance of the charge. The charge was are-melted with a tungsten electrode on a water-cooled copper hearth under a partial vacuum of very pure argon (99.92 pct minimum). Melting was practically contamination free. Vick-ers hardness increases of less than 10 points were normal for unalloyed iodide titanium control melts. Nitrogen analyses of are-melted iodide titanium showed a nitrogen content of 0.005 pct, about the same as is present in the as-deposited rod. No tungsten pickup was found in a melt of iodide titanium analyzed for tungsten. Weight losses in melting nitrogen-free alloys were very small and varied consistently from nil to 0.015 g (0 to 0.2 pct). This permitted the use of nominal composition for these alloys. Chemical analyses made for carbon, which can be analyzed conveniently by combustion methods, justified this procedure. Where nitrogen was added, considerable splattering took place. Here it was necessary to analyze for nitrogen by the Kjeldahl method. The ingots were hot rolled at 850°C to about 0.045 in. thick. After hot rolling, the strips were descaled by mechanical grinding, and then given a cold reduction of 5 to 10 pct to insure a uniform thickness throughout the length of the specimen. The edge strips and the tensile strips were annealed in a vacuum of 1x10-4 mm Hg pressure for 3 1/2 hr at 850°C and furnace cooled. Methods of Investigation Hardness Measurements: At least five Vickers hardness measurements were taken using a 10-kg load on each sample in the following conditions: (1) top and bottom of each ingot, (2) top and bottom surface of as-rolled and annealed sheet, and (3) on cross-section of annealed sheet and all quenched specimens. Tensile Tests: Tensile tests were conducted on Baldwin-Southwark testing machines having load ranges of 600 or 2000 lb. Tests were made on 1-in. gauge-length specimens, 3 1/4-in. overall length, 1/2 in. wide, 0.040 in. thick, with a reduced section 1 1/4 in. long and 0.250 in. wide. Two SR-4, A-7 strain gauges, one mounted on each side of the specimen, were used to measure the strain over a limited range to determine the modulus of elasticity. After the modulus of elasticity readings had been taken, load vs. strain readings were taken, using only one strain gauge, at increments of 0.0001 in. until the yield points were passed and then at 0.001-in. increments to the limit of the strain-gauge indicator (0.02 in.). Strain readings above 0.02 in. per in. were taken every 0.01 in., using dividers to measure the strain between the 1-in. gauge marks until the maximum load had been reached. Crosshead speed, when using the SR-4 gauges, was 0.005 in. per min, and, when using dividers, 0.01 in. per min. Flow Curves: Flow curves were determined using the true stress-true strain data obtained during the tension test. The usefulness of this type of information has been dealt with very adequately elsewhere by L. R. Jackson,&apos; J. H. Hollomon,6 and many others. Flow curves of true stress vs. true strain could be converted to the more conventional cold-work curve of 0.2 pct offset yield strength vs. percentage of cold reduction by means of the transformation, 1/1 = 1/1-R, where R is the fraction reduction in cold working. Thus, the true strains corresponding to percentage reduction can be calculated, and the 0.2 pct offset yield strengths scaled off the — 6 curve by taking the true stresses corresponding to the values of 6 + 0.002 strain. Heat Treatment: For the transformation studies, the alloys were heat treated in a horizontal-tube furnace using a dried 99.92 pct argon atmosphere, and quenched into water. Essentially no contamination was found after several hours of heat treatment at temperatures up to 1050°C. Metallography: Specimens were prepared in the

NUMEROUS investigations of chemical diffusion in a brass have been made and the results are collected in several places.1-3 This work has been mainly concerned with the determination of the chemical diffusivity as a function of composition and temperature. In 1947 Smigelskas and Kirken-dall&apos; showed that zinc and copper diffuse at different rates in face-centered-cubic brass, and since then, a number of efforts have been made to determine the intrinsic diffusivities of zinc and copper in this alloy.1, 5-9 Horne and Mehl8 in particular have recently determined the intrinsic diffusivities as functions of temperature and composition using sandwich-type couples and inert markers. Inman et al." also have determined the intrinsic diffusivities in homogeneous alloys using tracer techniques. When the present work was started, no information of this type was available. Consequently, measurements of the intrinsic diffusivities were made as a function of temperature at a constant composition of 28 atomic pct Zn with vapor-solid diffusion couples where the zinc was diffused into the diffusion couple from the vapor phase. The application of these couples to the study of diffusion in a: brass has been described previously.0,7 The temperature dependence of the intrinsic diffusivities was found to follow the relation D, = A, exp(-Hi/RT) and the values of Hzn, and Hcu, were found to be closely the same. It is emphasized, however, that the chemical dif-fusivity (D = N1D2 + N2D1) is a composite diffusivity and does not necessarily follow this exponential form. It is usually found to do so within experimental error for substitutional alloys because the heats of activation of the intrinsic diffusivities generally are not greatly different.&apos;" Also, at the onset of this work, there was no information available concerning possible unequal diffusion rates of individual components and the existence of a Kirkendall effect in alloys with other than face-centered-cubic structures. Since then, two reports indicating a Kirkendall effect in body-centered-cubic ß brass have appeared. Landergren and Mehl" have published a note describing Kirkendall diffusion experiments with sandwich-type couples. Inman et a1.9 also find a Kirkendall effect in this alloy using the tracer technique. In the present work, several aspects of the Kirkendall effect in ß brass were further investigated using vapor-solid couples. Two different couples were used, one in which the zinc was diffused into the specimen from the vapor phase and the other in which the zinc was diffused out of the specimen into the vapor phase. Briefly, the existence of a Kirkendall effect is confirmed and it is found that Dzn/Dcu = 3 at about the 46 atomic pct composition in this alloy at 600°, 700°, and 800°C. As a result of the unequal diffusion rates of zinc and copper, volume changes occur and subgrain formation is observed in the diffusion zone. In addition, significant porosity is produced by the precipitation of supersaturated vacancies. Diffusion in this alloy is therefore outwardly similar to diffusion in a brass where these effects are also observed, a Brass Experimental Methods—The use of vapor-solid couples in studying diffusion in a brass has been described in previous articles.6,7 The method briefly consists of sealing a copper specimen with Kirkendall markers initially placed on its surface in an evacuated quartz capsule along with a large zinc source of fine a brass chips and then diffusing the zinc into the specimen through the vapor phase. The zinc concentration at the specimen surface rises rapidly enough to a value near that of the a brass source so that the surface concentration may be regarded as constant during diffusion. Under these boundary conditions, values of the chemical diffu-sivity may be obtained by applying the Boltzmann-Matano analysis to the concentration penetration curve, and the intrinsic diffusivities may be obtained from Darken&apos;s5 equations when the velocity of marker movement is known. The diffusion specimens were made from OFHC copper in the form of disks 3.2 cm diam and 0.5 cm thick with faces surface-ground parallel to within +0.001 cm. Markers in the form of fine alumina particles <0.0002 cm diam were placed on the specimen surface. These specimens were then sealed in quartz capsules along with enough a brass chips of a 30.0 atomic pct Zn composition to keep the source concentration from decreasing by more than 0.3 atomic pct Zn as a result of the loss of zinc to the specimen during diffusion.
