Exploration is the systematically financed and technically oriented search for mineral wealth. Almost all established mining companies have an exploration department. The size of a company's search varies over the years as the company's profits, or the corporate philosophy change. While the established mining companies have exploration departments, they are also alert to acquiring discoveries made by others -- especially by prospectors and small companies without the resources to develop their find. The emphasis in some large companies stresses self-generated discoveries while others rely heavily on acquisitions; again, over the years the emphasis may alternate. In the last analysis, essentially all new mineral wealth was found through someone's exploration effort. Before we discuss how exploration is financed, it will be informative to analyze how discoveries have been made and by whom. Recently, the author conducted a survey of randomly selected major mining companies to answer these questions. Most companies responded and many went to considerable effort to give complete and detailed answers. I thank all for their help and cooperation. The questionnaire is attached as Appendix I. Appendix II is a list of the 400 companies that replied in a complete enough manner and format to be analyzed here. The results of the questionnaire are given in Table 1. "The United States Bureau of Mines is cooperating with the State of Utah and the City of Salt Lake in an investigation of methods of abating the smoke nuisance in Salt Lake City. In the course of this work samples of the atmosphere have been collected and analyzed in an attempt to determine the part played by sulphur dioxide or smelter gases in polluting the air at Salt Lake City.A fairly wide-spread opinion exists in Salt Lake City that the smelters contribute appreciably to the smoke nuisance. The gases discharged from the smelter stacks are believed (1) to float over the city in a heavy blanket which prevents the smoke from rising, and (2) to unite with the water vapor in the air to form corrosive fogs injurious to health and property.The first of these theories seems untenable. If the gas did not mix with air it would sink, owing to its heavier specific gravity, and form a blanket an the earth. Actually, the gas diffuses rapidly in air and any part reaching Salt Take must he thoroughly diluted. Perhaps sulphur dioxide in sufficient concentration might aid in fog formation. The more obvious nuisance, however, would be the injury to health and vegetation.The Garfield smelter is 16 miles west of the city, The Murray smelter 8 miles south, and the Midvale smelter 12 miles south. Under normal operating conditions, a relatively small amount of solid matter is discharged from these stacks. The toxic gaseous constituent of the discharge is sulphur dioxide, it is being discharged from the smelters the year round. If they are a factor in the city's smoke problem, the concentration of this gas in the air of the city should be appreciable and should increase toward the smelters, the con centration being highest with a south or a west wind."

The slip and twinning behavior in extended titanium crystals were studied in some detail. The formation and appearance of coarse kink bands are discussed. Their crystallographic geometry was determined by X-ray analysis. A phenomenological interpretation of the complexities in kink band development is also presented. The critical resolved shear stress, coefficient of shear hardening, and plane of fracture were determined for several crystals extended at room temperature. THE slip and twinning elements observed in the room-temperature deformation of titanium were enumerated in a previous paper1 in which considerations were advanced regarding the nature and selection of these elements and their effect on the known mechanical properties of this metal. The present study concerns the crystallographic, microscopic, and mechanical aspects of flow in relation to the slip and twinning elements, and includes a prediction of slip systems, nature of slip and twin markings, inhomogeneities of plastic flow, and stress-strain characteristics. Unless otherwise noted, arc-melted titanium sponge (99.77 pct) was used in these experiments. The method of production of crystals, their dimensions, and the surface preparation for micrographic examination have been reported.&apos; For obtaining stress-strain characteristics, only those crystals which traversed the entire width of the specimen and were at least 8 mm in length were used. Tensile deformation of the crystals was performed with conventional grips for sheet specimens and a constant-stress loading beam, designed after the method of Andrade and Chalmers.&apos; The specimens were loaded by allowing sand to flow from a reservoir into a bucket suspended from the longer end of a balanced 6:1 lever arm at a rate controlled to load the specimen approximately 2 kg per min. Strain measurements were made using the Baldwin SR-4, bonded, resistance-wire strain gage, Type A-8, which permitted a reading accuracy of 2 microinches per inch. The formulas used in the evaluation of shear stress and shear strain, as in deriving the coefficient of shear hardening, are given by Schmid and Boasv n terms of the original orientation and change in length of the crystal. For calculating the critical resolved shear stress, the standard equation was used. The crystallographic nature of the unpredictable slip observed in a number of specimens was determined by the single-surface X-ray method of analysis as described in ref. 1. Experimental Results Prediction of Slip System: It was reported&apos; that room temperature slip in titanium takes place predominantly on {10i0} and in a <1120> direction, giving three potential slip systems. Hence, it should be possible to predict the operative primary system in the manner used by Taylor and Elam&apos; for alu- minum (i.e., the one with the greatest component of shear stress in the direction of slip). The stereo-graphic construction in Fig. 1 shows that this is true. In all cases, slip was found to occur initially on the (0110) plane and, in a number of cases, in the [21f0] direction. (The direction of slip was not determined for all orientations.) It follows that duplex slip can be expected when two slip systems are geometrically equally favorable for slip, as demonstrated in Fig. 2. In both crystals slip took place simultaneously on the (1700) and (olio) prismatic planes, as indicated by Fig. 2a and b. In the case of crystal B the movement of the specimen axis with increasing extension was toward the (10i0) direction, which represents the stable end orientation resulting from alternate slip on the [2ii0] and [1120] directions. This is analogous to the duplex slip process in face-centered cubic metals." Unpredictable Slip: In a number of crystals whose orientations were well within the operation of a single slip system, secondary slip occurred on planes not predicted by the criterion of maximum shear stress. Colliery spoil is the major constituent of colliery spoil &apos;rockpaste&apos; which has been used to infill abandoned limestone mines in the West Midlands of England since the early-1980s. The other constituents of rockpasle are pulverised fuel ash, lime and water. A key property of the rockpaste is its ability to flow within the mine workings over considerable distances before setting. This paper describes the work carried out to identify suitable sites as sources of colliery spoil for making rockpaste and goes onto consider the flow properties of the material and the monitoring methods used on-site. A full-scale trial comprising mulling a 6600 nt&apos; section of an abandoned mine was conducted prior to the mulling of the Littleton Street Mine which had a volume of about 500 000 m&apos;. As well as describing the methods used for monitoring the movement of rockpaste material, a description is also given of a dip-meter developed specifically for the purpose of measuring the level of paste in the mine. This paper shows how a colliery spoil based paste has been successfully rued for infilling abandoned mine workings. The monitoring systems developed for use in the two case studies presented in this paper are now being used extensively for infilling other abandoned mine workings. To-date over I I mines with a total volume exceeding two million cubic metres have been backfilled.

[For reasons well known to Mining Engineers, fine grinding in the wet form is quite universal inn plants engaged in the traction of metallic values from crude ore In the processing, of non-metallic and industrial minerals, however, fine grinding in dry form is the more common method. The crude materials generally contain less moisture than required for wet grinding, and the products are usually marketed or used in the dry form, most of them as powders. To grind wet would therefore entail the addition of water and the expense for drying the product, which is not justified. Conventional strata control methods (i.e. roof bolts. cable trusses) are not always effective for ground control of very weak coal strata. An alternative method, termed presupport. is being investigated by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. In this paper structural modeling of presupport conceuts and field teatinn of a DresuDuort application is presented. Pinite-elem&; modeis indicate that forepoles significantly lower beam stresses in the roof strata overlying a coal seam. but they cannot he expected to prevent or reduce I roof strata failure at the coal face due to the presence of a high stress concentration at that location. However, their presence near the coal face is needed to sustain the fall of roof if it does occur. Because of an ever present severe stress concentration at the coal face, it would appear that stresses could exceed material strengths, causing local structural damage, especially if the rock is very weak. Therefore previous coal face positions along an entry may have a higher than normal probability of roof fall. In the field investigation. a loorcost air injection test has thus far shown promise as a tool for evaluating that effects of forepoling on the roof strata. Observations of coal mine en- tries in which forepoles have been installed indicate forepoling is effective in controlling very weak roof strata.

[Experiments were conducted by the Bureau of Mines on five types of simuated lunar rock (dacite, tholeiitic basalt, vesicular basalt, pumice, and uluth Gabbro) to study the effects of various simulated lunar environments n their strength and deformational properties. Specimens were tested in an ltrahigh vacuum (UHV) system at pressures ranging from atmospheric down to 0-11 torr and at temperatures of -130°, 20°, and 135° C. All tests were onducted with a servocontrolled testing machine. Rock specimens tested at 0° C in UHV exhibited significantly higher compressive strength and Young&apos;s odulus than those tested at 20° C in atmospheric pressure. The magnitudes f increase are related to the porosities and permeabilities of the rock pecimens; high porosity and permeability allow better outgassing and thus nprove surface cleanliness in UHV. The compressive strength generally ncreases but Young&apos;s modulus decreases as test environments change from 20° C i UHV to 135° C in UHV. No significant difference was observed in the iysical properties measured at 20° C in LTV and -130° C in UHV. Anisotropy i strength and Young&apos;s modulus exist both in UHV and at atmospheric condi¬&apos;.ons with the same symmetry pattern. The orientations of the principal axes iy, however, change from the atmospheric to UHV condition. The results idicate that rock fragmentation in lunar environment will require more ergy than that at 20° C in atomospheric pressure.]

"In order to elucidate the present status of process-control technology, survey study has been made on the present process control schemes of representative copper smelting and converting processes in Japan. Conceptual control flow diagrams have been deduced and shown on respective functional reactors, i.e. drying, smelting, converting and fire-refining units, where the objective OUTPUT items are correlated to the INPUT variables through respective CAUSE-AND-EFFECT RELATIONSHIPSFuture view has been also discussed on several feasible and desirable improvement and refinement ~n measurements and control system for better copper smelting and converting operations.INTRODUCTIONIn other to seek for the better and efficient operation in copper smelting and converting process, survey study has been first conducted on the present process-control schemes of respective functional unit processes, i.e. drying, smelting, converting and refining unit processes, of representative copper production processes in Japan. Conceptual process flow chart of control scheme has been then deduced where output items are correlated to input items through the respective cause-and-effect relationships.After this survey study, future view has been discussed on the feasible and desirable improvement and refinement in the measurement and control system in these processes. Emphasis has been placed on the better and precise measurements of temperature, oxygen partial pressures in respective furnaces and end-point in converting and refining unit operations."

This paper will be a general discussion of surface flooding considerations as they affect mining facilities site selection, based primarily on experience with several such problems with which MSHA&apos;s Bruceton Technical Support staff has been involved. The detailed analytical procedures used in arriving at engineering solutions of these problems will not he presented here; the emphasis is on drawing attention to this additional aspect of mine design which hitherto has been largely overlooked due to insufficient awareness, information and criteria. The paper&apos;s purpose is to stimulate thought and offer guidance concerning the selection of sites for mining facilities in light of the potential for flooding problems caused by surface waters. Flooding by surface waters, would generally not be a serious consideration in areas of relatively low topographical relief, i.e. flat lands, although there are exceptions to this rule, for example, in Western areas where flash flooding is a major concern. Therefore, this discussion will mainly apply to areas where the severity of surface flooding would be amplified by the topography-large, well defined watersheds of considerable relief, i.e. mountainous areas. In these regions, steep valley walls cause any rainfall to flow quickly into the relatively narrow valley bottoms. These valley bottoms provide little flow area during storm conditions, so deep and rapidly flowing streams result.

The efficient and safe design of room-and-pillar coal mines still remains as one of the pressing problems facing the mining industry in the United States. Present day design is a trial-and-error approach based mostly on experience. Although much research has been directed to stability of mine roofs and coal pillars, no generally-accepted design method has been formulated. This paper reports on a three-year research effort directed to an improved design of room-and-pillar coal mining in the U.S.A. Essentially the study consisted of three aspects: (i) determination of stable roof spans; (ii) determination of the strength of coal pillars; and (iii) determination of safety factors for room-and-pillar coal mining in the United States. Furthermore, three novel approaches were utilized during this research: i) the "petite sismique" technique was assessed for possible determination of coal pillar deformability ii) the "Geomechanics Classification" was extended for determination of safe roof spans in room-and-pillar coal mining. iii) a national survey of the current design practice and mining dimensions was performed with the aim of assessing factors of safety for room-and-pillar coal mining The outcome of this work, which is summarized in this paper, is a design code for room-and-pillar mining in the United States.

RECENT attempts to produce secondary recrystalli-zation in high-purity iron have given conflicting results. Coulomb and Lacombe1&apos;2 did not find it but Dunn and Walter3,4 did. The latter workers have stated that (100) [001] and/or (110) [001] orientations develop depending on the oxygen content of the annealing atmosphere. This Technical Note records results which are in agreement with Dunn and Walter in so far as it shows that secondary recrystallization can be produced in high-purity iron, but does not confirm that both types of orientation are obtainable. Similar observations have been made on chromium-iron and molybdenum-iron, although when this technique is used on 3 1/4 pct Si-Fe, both types are obtained as in the work of Dunn and alter.&apos; Pure iron strip was cold-rolled from sintered compacts prepared from Carbonyl Iron Powder-Grade MCP of the International Nickel Co. (Mond) Ltd. The powder contains about 0.5 pct 0, 0.01 pct C, 0.004 pct N, (0.002 pct S, $0.005 pct Mg and Si, and 0.4 pct Ni—that is, it is substantially free from metallic impurities other than nickel, which is thought to be unimportant in the present work. The iron powder was (a) pressed at 25 tons per sq in. into blocks measuring 3 by 1 by 0.3 in., (b) deoxidized in hydrogen (dewpoint -60°C) by heating first at 350°C and then at 600° C until the dewpoint returned to -60°C at each temperature and (c) sintered in hydrogen (dewpoint -40°C) at 1350°C for 24 hr. (when dewpoint is referred to in this Note, it is the value as measured on the exit side of the furnace). The sintered compacts were cold-rolled to 1/8 in., annealed in hydrogen (dewpoint -60°C) at 1050°C for 12 hr and cold-rolled to 0.004, 0.002, and 0.001 in. with inter-anneals at 900°C for 5 hr and a final reduction of 50 pct. Final annealing of strip between alumina or silica plates at 875" to 900°C in hydrogen with dewpoints of -20°, -55" and -80°C produced secondary grains with the (100) in the rolling plane; the extent of secondary recrystallization was greatest when the dewpoint was -55°C. Annealing in a vacuum of 2 x 10"5 mm Hg at the same temperature produced no secondary recrystallization at all. With strip thicker than 0.002 in. very few secondary crystals developed whatever the conditions of annealing. Using a processing schedule somewhat similar to that described above, secondary recrystallization was produced in two bcc alloys of iron, viz. 80 pct Fe + 20 pct Cr and 96 pct Fe + 4 pct Mo. The former was reduced to final thicknesses of 0.001 to 0.004 in. and the latter to final thicknesses of 0.001 to 0.016 in. With the chromium-iron, a final anneal at 1250°C (found to be the most effective temperature for developing secondary crystals in the 0.004-in material) with a dewpoint of -25°C produced a greater degree of secondary recrystallization than with dewpoints of -50°C or -20°C. Secondary crystals developed in strips of all thicknesses from 0.001 to 0.004 in. Final annealing in vacuum produced no secondary crystals at all. For the molybdenum-iron a temperature of 1200°C was most effective. It was found that a dewpoint of -50°C during the final anneal gave better results than a dewpoint of -25 "C on the 0.008 in. material. Final annealing in vacuum gave slightly worse results than annealing in hydrogen with a dew-point of -50°C. Secondary crystals were developed in strips of all thicknesses up to 0.008 in. The experiments show that the extent of secondary recrystallization is a maximum for certain critical values of oxygen content of furnace atmosphere and annealing temperature, and that these values are different for different alloys. The thinner the material, the less critical these values are. The general conclusions are that secondary recrystallization can be obtained in high-purity iron, chromium-iron, and molybdenum-iron, using a processing schedule similar to that which will cause the phenomenon to take place in high purity 3 1/4 pct Si-Fe. Unlike the silicon-iron, however, only the (100) (0011-- orientation has been produced in these alloys, irrespective of the temperature of final annealing and the oxygen content of the furnace atmosphere. Estes aços possuem certa tendência à geração de trincas transversais de superfície em placas produzidas via lingotamento contínuo, principalmente se as variáveis de processo durante a solidificação não forem adequadas. Experimentalmente, verificou-se que a ocorrência de trincas estava associada à composição química e às variáveis de processo. Com base nestas observações, avaliações da literatura e simulações com software Thermocalc ®, foram propostas alterações de composição química e ajuste na curva de oscilação, sendo este último considerado fator principal para a obtenção de placas isentas de trincas.

The John Fritz Medal is awarded from time to time for notable scientific or industrial achievement by a board composed of representatives from the four engineering Societies. The members of the Board of Award for 1917 are: A. S. C. E. A. S. M. E. George F. Swain Ambrose Swasey, Charles Warren hunt, John, A. Brashear, Charles D. Marx, Frederick R. Hutton, Clemens Herschel. John R. Freeman. A. I. M. E. A. I. E. E. Gybbon Spilsbury, C. 0. Mailloux, Charles F. Rand , Paul M. Lincoln, Christopher R. Corning, John J. Carty, Benjamin B. Thayer. Harold W. Buck. The John Fritz Medal was awarded in January, 1917, to Dr. Henry Marion Howe, for his "investigations in metallurgy, especially in the metallography of Iron and Steel." The presentation ceremonies were held in the Auditorium of the United Engineering Societies&apos; Building, New York, on Thursday evening, May 10. Mr. Ambrose Swasey, Chairman of the John Fritz Medal Board of Award, presided, and addresses were delivered by Dr. Rossiter W. Raymond, Secretary Emeritus of the American Institute of Mining Engineers, and Dr. Ira N. Hollis, President of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. Professor Albert Sauveur, Chairman of the Board at the time the award was made, presented the medal, and the ceremonies concluded with the response of Dr. Howe.

The manufacture of steel castings has become one of the important industries of the times. The late Mr. Alexander I,. Holley published in 1878, in the Metallurgical Review, an able paper, entitled "Solid Steel Castings," showing how all manner of castings could be made advantageously of steel. Mr. Holley had then but lately returned from the great iron and steel works of Terrenoire, France, which were engaged, I believe, almost exclusively on large castings, of a simple type, for the government,, and were repeating the same operation from day to day. These conditions are, as experience has shown, very different from those of ordinary practice in miscellaneons castings; and Mr. Holley might have been less confident if be had actually gone into the business. More than seven years have passed ; and as yet the magnificent possibilities held forth in his paper have not been realized. There are only six steelcasting establishments in the United States, and their total output of castings is certainly not as much as 20,000 tons per annum, and probably not more than 10,000 tons; whereas it should be over 200,000 tons to supply the needs of the country. The solubility of sulfur in Si-Fe was determined by the metallographic examination of heat-treated and quenched samples. In the absence of manganese, the solubility in 3.1 pct Si-Fe was found to be about 0.010 pct at 1000o C, 0.015 pct at 11000C, and 0.020 pct at 1150°C, which is substatntially less than hitherto reported. Increasing the silicon content was found to decrease the solubility of sulfur, which is consistent with the increase in the activity coefficient of sulfur with increasing silicon content that has been reported for Fe-Si alloys. Manganese additions were studied in alloys containing 3.1 pct Si and between 0.013 and 0.015 pct S. At low manganese levels the solubility product of manganese sulfide was found to be lower than previously reported. THE solubility of sulfur in pure polycrystalline iron has been reported by Rosenquist and Dunicz1 and by Turkdogan et al.2 Samples were equilibrated in atmospheres containing different ratios of H2S/H2. Both groups of investigators found a solubility limit in y iron of 0.013 pct at 1000oC and 0.031 pct at 1200°C. In addition, Rosenquist and Dunicz1 found a solubility limit in a iron of 0.020 pct at 900°C. Ainslie, Hoffman, and seybolt3 found significantly higher sulfur contents in polycrystalline iron samples than in single-crystal samples after heating at 890°C in a sealed tube containing a mixture of powdered iron and FeS made with s35. Whereas the single crystals contained 0.013 and 0.016 pct S (± 0.005 pct), the polycrystalline samples contained between 0.016 and 0.026 pct S. Autoradiographs suggested that the excess sulfur in the polycrystalline samples was due to the segregation of sulfur in solution at grain boundaries. Ainslie and seybolt4 have reported on the solubility of sulfur in 3 pct Si-Fe. Their samples were sealed in capsules containing hydrogen and sufficient sulfur as cobalt sulfide to saturate the sample. After heat treating, the sulfur-rich phase on the surface was removed by abrading, and the sulfur content of the sample was taken as the equilibrium value for that temperature. Before the equilibrating heat treatment, the samples were heated to 1300°C to coarsen the grains. The resulting grain size, which was about 3/18 in. in diam, was considered sufficiently large to preclude a sensible increase in sulfur solubility due to grain boundary segregation. They reported the solubility to be 0.029 pct at 900oC, 0.063 pct at 1000oC, 0.076 pct at 1100°C, 0.122 pct at 1200°C, and 0.098 pct at 1300°C.

We modeled mode I fracture in shale with an equivalent damage zone (CDM), a cohesive zone (CZM) and discontinuous enrichment functions (XFEM). In the Differential Stress Induced Damage model (DSID model) used in the continuum approach the total work input is equal to the sum of the energy released by crack debonding, the energy dissipated by crack opening, and the elastic strain energy stored in the bulk outside of the damage zone. In CZM and XFEM, the overall stiffness of the rock mass in the process zone drops as soon as the fracture starts propagating (unstable fracture propagation), whereas rock elastic properties in the CDM equivalent damage zone evolve smoothly with the displacement imposed at the boundary of the domain. In the CZM and XFEM, fracture propagation stabilizes after a turning point: this point coincides with damage initiation in the DSID model. As a result, the total energy of the rock mass calculated with CDM is about twice as large as in CZM and XFEM. The relative energy components of the rock mass are in the same order of magnitude and follow the same trends in the three models. This numerical study compares the evolution of dissipated energy potentials during mode I fracture propagation, and is expected to provide a basis to predict the amount of energy released by discrete fracture growth vs. damage propagation in the fracture process zone.

"A study has been conducted to examine the effect of ternary alloying elements on high temperature deformation of the C15 NbCr2 based intermetallics in Nb-Cr-X (X=V, Mo and W) alloy systems, which have attractive properties as high temperature structural materials. The high temperature deformation of the C15 NbCr2 intermetallics can be improved by two alloying methods. One method is based on geometrical consideration for site occupation and atomic size factor of component elements and additive elements in the single phase C15 lattice; addition of Mo and V can promote dislocation movement without introducing significant hardening. The other method is based on microstructural modification through ternary alloying; moderate addition of these elements results in a variety of duplex microstructure consisting of the C15 phase and bee solid solution without forming any intermediate phases, and can enhance the high temperature deformability. Particularly, alloys with duplex microstructure equilibrating with Cr-rich bee solid solution is shown to exhibit superior deform ability. Also, lattice property of the additive atoms in the C15 structure and phase relation between the C15 structure and the bee solid solution are investigated by OM, XRD, TEM and ALCHEMI observations and then discussed in association with observed mechanical behavior.IntroductionLaves intermetallics with AB2 stoichiometry belong to the largest group in a large number of intermetallics with various kind of crystal structures, and have a variation of the cubic CIS, the hexagonal C14 and the dihexagonal C36 structures, depending on stacking sequence of XYZ type, each of which consists of four interpenetrating atomic layers (1-3). Some of the Laves intermetallics have good functional properties and therefore are considered to be used as, for instance, magnetic materials, magneto-optical materials, hydrogen storage materials and superconducting materials (2). Also, the Laves intermetallics are considered to be good candidate as high temperature structural materials operating at high temperatures and in severe environment because they have high melting point, low density, and potential resistance to corrosion and oxidation. However, the Laves intermetallics are very brittle at low temperatures because they consist of complex crystal structures similar to many other intermetallics."

The United States is faced with increasing demands for electricity, coupled with continuing demands for crude oil and gas. Superimposed on these&apos; national requirements are our national requirements for clean air and elimination of thermal pollution of our rivers. From the coal viewpoint, this situation is complicated still more by the rapid advances in nuclear power. In this paper, I hope to show a way to use our Western coals as a solution to this involved national problem by producing: 1. High quality crude 2. Low cost power 3. Economic byproducts We could expect these products to be made at one site in an integrated plant that would mine (extract) coal, process it, and convert it to electricity. Perhaps the most important attribute of the plant is its reduced water requirement and the elimination of air pollution from the power cycle. Quite logically, such a plant would probably recover valuable byproducts, such as pipeline gas, sulphur, cement, aluminum, and the like. Although the plant projected in this paper is a conceptual one, it is based on work now underway by Government and industry. Prediction of the future is a most hazardous occupation, but plants such as the one projected are based on current knowledge and can be expected to reach commercial operation in the near term future.

THE term "longwall mining" is best known to coal men, although modifications of the method are continually being used in other fields. Longwall mining is of interest today because it makes for greater mecha-nization and better supervision at the working face, and therefore lower production costs and increased safety. It is an approach to the factory system of production, the high efficiency of which as compared to that in mines is well known. There is available an accumulation of experience regarding this work but coordination of experience is lacking and this series of experiments was undertaken to help serve this purpose. Model experiments were used for reasons of safety, cost and time, and because it has been previously shown1,2,3 that a scalar model built of the same material as the prototype will behave in a manner similar to that of the prototype, with time effects the same, if the effective weight of the model is increased in the same proportion as its linear dimensions are decreased. This is accomplished by substituting a centrifugal for the gravitational field; i.e., placing the model in a centrifuge and controlling the strength of the centrifugal field by varying the rate of rotation. Many factors affect the behavior of the geologic material overlying a bed, therefore results and conclusions contained in this paper apply only to the conditions presented herein.
