"The preparation of Al203-SiC-TiC composite powders was studied by SHS process using silica (source of Si02) powder instead of Si which is expensive. And, aluminum powder was used as reducing agent of silica and charcoal activated was used as carbon source. Effects of the molar ratio in raw material mixtures and compaction pressure and initial temperature of reactant on the products and combustion process were studied. The most important variable affecting the synthesis of Al203-SiC-TiC was the molar ratio of carbon. The combustion reaction generated in powder state without preheating. But the unreactants exist in the product on all molar ratio. When the preheating temperature is over 400 °C, the combustion reaction was able to be generated in pellet state. Without preheating, the combustion reaction was possible by Ti02 addition. The optimum condition in this system was the molar ratio of Si02:Ti02:Al:C=2.5:0.5:4:3.1. INTRODUCTIONCeramics have demonstrated a capability as a cutting tool, especially in competition with WC-Co cermets (ceramic-metal composites) as inserts for metal turning and milling operation. The advantage of ceramics compared with carbides is retention of high hardness, strength, and chemical inertness to temperatures in excess of 1000 ·c . This allows use of the ceramics at much higher machining speeds than can be tolerated by carbides. However, the ceramics have lower toughness than the carbide materials, and have only been used successfully in the limited operations of turning and milling. There are several classes of cutting tools. The addition of TiC or PSZ, or both, and reinforcement with SiC overcame the poor fracture toughness and thermal-shock resistance that limited Al203 use in the past [1]."

Part 1: Description Of Geology & Reserves System Introduction The Ore Evaluation and Reserve programs have been developed to aid in the evaluation of coal deposits, both qualitatively and quantitatively. The "Weighted Moving Average" technique used provides considerable flexibility in dealing with diverse parameters with differing distribution characteristics. Determination of Model Constants "a" and "k" - Unit 1 The flexibility of the method in dealing with diverse value parameter distributions lies in its ability to cater to the individual characteristics of each. These characteristics are embodied in the values determined for constants "a" and "k", namely, local and regional variations in value distributions, respectively. The empirical method used attempts to optimize the "a" - "k" combination. Realistic values for "a" and "k" are entered into the program together with sample values for the required parameters and their respective coordinate location values. All the values within a specified radius from the point being evaluated are used to interpolate a value at that point. (Note, the interpolated point is the location of one of the boreholes, values of which are not used in the calcula¬tion.) 3n a similar manner, interpolated values are calculated for each borehole location and for each parameter. This is done for each possible combination of "a" and "k".

Since the early 1970's, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has carried out exploration geophysical research on non-basemetal strategic mineral commodities, including uranium, lithium, gold, potash, and chromite. The chromite study (largely completed) and the potash study (still going on) carried out during the past 4 years have not been aimed at the discovery of new ore reserves, but instead were designed to complement exploration by private mining companies. The USGS has carried out research not normally conducted by these companies, but which can be used by them in their efforts to increase production of strategic minerals. Results of the chromite and potash studies highlight the importance of: 1) a laboratory-research phase (petrophysical and petrographic studies) at the beginning of work on any new commodity; 2) an operative or functional ore-deposition model to serve as a conceptual framework, and the necessity to continually test, refine, and modify it during the study; 3) indirect geologic/geochemical indicators, secondary associations, and the use of multiple physical properties; and 4) the use of a systematic inverse-cost sequential-exploration (i.e. lowest resolution and lowest cost first) strategy to keen the exploration economically reasonable. The keystone to the success of the study is frequent and substantive dialogue among geologists, geophysicists, and geochemists.

BINARY- alloy phases having the A15-type crystal structure have been described as occurring at a simple and more or less invariant stoichiometric composition (A3B) which corresponds to the relative number of atoms occupying each of the two crystallographi lattice sites in this structure.1,2 It is frequently assumed, therefore, that each crystallographic site is occupied exclusively by one kind of atom. In most cases, however, there have been insufficient experimental data to establish whether atomic ordering is, in fact, complete. Recent studies have shown that binary A15-type phases are sometimes stable over an appreciable composition range3''* and, occasionally, the composition range of stability does not even include the "ideal" A3B stoichiometric composition.5-7 We have observed the existence of nonstoichiometric A15-type phases in the binary systems Cr-Pt and Cr-Os. This has not been reported in previous work on these alloy systems.1,8-11 A series of alloys, each weighing approximately 30 g, was prepared by are-melting in an Ar-He atmosphere using 99.999 pct Cr, 99.999 pct Os, and 99.99 pct Pt as starting materials. Each alloy was melted four times with a total weight loss of less than 1 pct. The stoichiometric (A3B) alloys were sealed in evacuated quartz tubes and annealed at 1200°C for periods of time ranging from 3 days to 2 months. Examination of the alloy microstructures revealed that little change had occurred over this time interval and it was therefore assumed that the microstructures were fairly representative of equilibrium conditions. No evidence of contamination was observed although there was apparently some loss of chromium which was confined to a thin layer at the surface of the specimens. The quartz tubes were quenched from the annealing temperature into cold water. X-ray diffraction and metallographic examination of the stoichiometric alloys revealed an estimated 10 to 30 pct of second phases which were tentatively identified as phases previously reported in these binary-alloy systems.8-11 A second series of alloys was prepared by mixing -325 mesh metal powders having a nominal purity of 99.9 pct and compressing these mixed powders in a cylindrical die at a pressure of 43,000 psi. These alloys, each weighing 15 g, and some of the arc-melted alloys were annealed in a high-temperature vacuum furnace heated by tantalum strips at a pressure of 10-8 Torr and were rapidly cooled by turning off the furnace power. X-ray and metallographic examination of both series of alloys served to establish the composition ranges of the A15-type phases. Although some chromium losses occurred during the vacuum annealing, they were largely confined to a thin layer on the outer surfaces of the samples. It was established that the A15 phases occur in the Cr-Pt system at 21 ± 1 at. pct Pt after 1 week at 1200°C and in the Cr-Os system at 28 ± 1 at. pctOs after 1 day at 1400°C (see Table I). We also observed that an arc-melted stoichiometric (A3B) alloy in the Cr-Ir system was single-phase (A15-type) in the "as-cast" condition in agreement with previous work.8,13 In addition we obtained a sample of the Cr-Os A15-type phase from Argonne National Laboratory. This alloy contained less than 1 pct second phase12 and was submitted to a density measurement. The density measurement yielded a value of 11.14 g per cu cm in comparison to a theoretical value of 11.25 g per cu cm calculated using the observed lattice constant (4.6806Å) of this alloy. The uncertainty in measurement was 0.1 pct but the sample may have contained some cracks or minor imperfections which could account for the low experimental value. We have also studied the atomic ordering in these phases by means of integrated line intensity measurements using thick, flat, rotating powder samples and CuK a radiation in an X-ray diffractometer. We have obtained order parameters of 0.90 for the Cr-Pt phase, 0.89 for the Cr-Ir phase, and 0.64 for the Cr-Os phase using the formula: where s is the usual Bragg and Williams order parameter, ra is the fraction of chromium atoms in A sites, and FA is the fraction of chromium atoms in the alloy. The values obtained are estimated to be accurate within ±4 pct. If the unusually small value for the order parameter of the Cr-Os A15 phase were due to the existence of lattice vacancies on the "B-atom" sites, then a density of 10.04 g per cu cm would be expected in contrast to the observed value of 11.14 g per cu cm. The Doyon Mill has been running slightly above design capacity, and recovery has increased 3%.IntroductionThe Doyon Mine is located 25 miles east of Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec (Figure I).It is a joint venture owned by Lac Minerals and Cambior, with each holding a 50% interest. Lac Minerals operates the mine under the direction of a management committee.Production at the Doyon Mine began in 1980 with the start up of the Main Zone pit. Shortly thereafter the Doyon Mine became the largest open pit gold producer in Canada.In 1983, a ramp leading to the fourth level and exploration drifts were driven. Over the past decades, there has been an increasing recognition of the strategic use of pile-supported rafts in design of heavily-loaded structures to reduce total and differential settlements. However, such a hybrid foundation construction method has not been widely utilized in many countries, including the U.S., due to code limitations. In current practice, the foundation design is based on either (i) the bearing capacity of the raft supported by the subgrade soils, or (ii) solely the pile capacity. This paper addresses the potential use of such hybrid piled-raft systems, where the structural load is shared by both by the piles and the subgrade soils directly beneath the raft, in foundation design of power plant structures. The study assessed some of the characteristics of piled-raft behavior by undertaking three-dimensional finite element analyses of two raft sizes, and various pile layout patterns, including the rafts with piles distributed evenly and only in the central area of the raft. The computer software PLAXIS 3D with the Mohr-Coulomb constitutive soil model was used to facilitate the modeling of such cases. The results presented in this paper indicate how strategically locating the piles could reduce the differential and total settlements.

The growing market demand for lithium is mainly due to its use in the manufacture of batteries for electric or hybrid vehicles and portable equipment (smartphones, tablets, power tools, notebooks, etc.). Currently there is great interest in finding new sources of lithium and technologies for its utilisation. Li-S batteries have received attention due to their theoretically high specific energy density, which is 3 to 5 times greater than that of Li-ion batteries. Unlike Li-ion batteries, of which the main raw materials are lithium carbonate and lithium hydroxide, the main raw material for Li-S batteries is lithium chloride. The anode used in Li-S batteries is metallic lithium, produced by a molten lithium chloride electrolysis process. The extraction of lithium from pegmatites such as spodumene, previously abandoned in the 1990s for being uneconomical, has become attractive due to the increase in prices as well as the need for greater lithium purity of products made from lithium-bearing minerals. The main methods used for lithium recovery from spodumene ore include the sulfuric acid process, the alkaline process (lime or limestone as raw material) and the chlorination roasting process. Thermodynamic modelling using HSC software 5.1 was conducted to predict different reactions that could occur during chlorination roasting of the spodumene/MgCl2+CaCl2 system. Lithium extraction from the solid obtained after the chlorination roasting was also investigated. The results of thermodynamic analysis provided a better understanding of the chlorination roasting process for lithium extraction. Metallurgical tests with a mass ratio of 1:6 (spodumene:chlorides) and molar ratio of 2:1 (MgCl2:CaCl2) allowed over 95% recovery of the lithium contained in the spodumene concentrate. "INTRODUCTION The Southern Experiment Station of the U.S. Bureau of Mines, cooperating with the University of Alabama and Alabama coal producers, has made a series of investigations of the washability of coal from commercially important bens of Alabama. The results of 13 investigations pertaining to the Mary Lee, Clark, Black Creek, Jefferson, Pratt, Corona, Carter Brookwood, Blue Creek, Thompson, and Woodstock beds have been published. 4/ This report, the fourteenth of the series, deals with run-of-mine coal from the Henry Ellen bed at the Acmar No. 5 mine of the Alabama Fuel & Iron Co.The Acmar mine is 1/2 mile west of Acmar, Saint Clair County, in the northern part of the Cahaba field. Present production at the mine is about 800 tons per day, all of which, accept the lump coal, is treated in jigs. The washability data were obtained by means of screen-sizing and float-and-sink tests. There are included, also, tests showing the extent of liberation of impurities by recrushing the coarser sizes of coal from the top bench and tests showing the flakiness in selected sizes.SAMPLING AT THE MINEThe Henry Ellen bed at Acmar consists of two benches separated by a shale parting. At the point of sampling the top bench was 6 feet 3 inches thick and contained a 1-inch and a 1 1/2-inch band of bone. The bottom bench was 5 feet thick and was separated from the top bench by 20 inches of shale. In taking the samples for the washability study the working face was squared up, and a representative 2-ton section was out from each bench. The shale parting was discarded, according to usual mining practice."

Copper was first produced in Australia in 1844, at the Kapunda Mine in South Australia, and, by 18i>0, production exceeded 2,000 tons of copper a year. Output increased ,steadily, reaching a peak of 14,00Qo tons a year in 1867 and 1868, when the Burra Burra and Kapunda Mines in South Australia and the Peak Downs Moine at Clermont, Queensland, were at the height of their production. At this period, Australian copper formed a considerable percentage of the world's supply, its output equalling, for a short time, that of the United States. Production declined to between 3,000 and 4,000 tons a year after the closing of' these three mines between 18717 and 1879, and, at this stage, the Australian output came chiefly from the Wallatoo and Moonta mines in South Australia. About 19000, it began to rise again, with the extension of the railway to the copper fields of Chillagoe and Cloncurry, and, between 1905 and 1912, was at its greatest, with a maximum of 47,774 tons of copper in 1912. During this period, Australia contributed 4,7 per cent. of the world's annual production, and ranked among the six major copper-producing countries of the world (Table 1).

The helium resources base of the United States was estimated by the Bureau of Mines to be 1,040 Bcf as of January 1, 1987. These resources are divided into four categories in decreasing degree of assurance of their existence: (1) helium in storage and in proved natural gas reserves, 265 Bcf, (2) helium in probable natural gas resources, estimated at 228 Bcf, (3) helium in possible natural gas resources, estimated to be 320 Bcf, and (4) helium in speculative natural gas resources, 227 Bcf. These helium resources are further divided into depleting and nondepleting, with the helium in storage being in a separate classification. The depleting resources are those associated with natural gasfields that are, or will be, produced for the natural gas they contain. Almost all of the helium in potential (probable, possible, and speculative) natural gas resources is included in this classification. These depleting resources are estimated to contain 951 Bcf of the total helium resource base. Helium resources contained in nondepleting natural gas resources, i.e., those in shut-in, abandoned, or otherwise nonproducing natural gasfields, are estimated to total 53 Bef. There is 36 Bcf of helium in storage in the Federal Government-owned Cliffside Gasfield near Amarillo, TX.

PART I.-GASES IN INDUSTRY INTRODUCTION THE part played by gases in industry can be considered from at least four distinct viewpoints, viz: (1) As air to support combustion and life and do various kinds of work (2) As fuel, or as essential to certain chemical processes (3) As sources of danger from explosion or fire ( 4) As hazards to man's health The present paper deals with gases only insofar as they are sources of danger, or are hazards to health. It may be noted, however, that, in point of tonnage, air is one of the most important materials handled in any industrial plant. In the operations of the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company, for example, 138,000 tons of air are handled daily, the only material exceeding this figure being water. The United States Bureau of Mines has listed no fewer than seventy-four gases and vapours that, under certain conditions, may be considered as ex-plosive or dangerous (poisonous). The work reported in this paper extends,-bhsb on the "Heat Hardening of Artificial Magnetite ;Pellets"., which was described at the- International Symposium on Agglomeration ;-sponsored by the American Institute. of Mining, Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers at Philadelphia; U.S.A. in April, 1961. Whereas- that work was of a.,more basic nature, -serving to illustrate the suitability of artificialòmagnetites with various.admixtures, to the application of heat hardened pellets, on: this occasion the aim-is to illustrate the procedures-which were used-to- establish the dimensions of commercialòrecuperativ strands for Australian raw materials,The nature of the pellet feed, i.e. relatively uniform :spheres of4 3/8 in. - 7/16. in. diameter, makes it possible to use small scale static pots for test work. By the use of a closed system and the measurement of suctions, gas f lows, and temperatures through beds, the speed and heat requirements of the various stages of heat hardening can be measured, so: that for a specified quality of product estimates can be made of the broad design characteristics of a moving grate system. In practice of course it is .usual to correlate the data from this type-of :experimental 'apparatus with . existing production units upon which good operating data, in the statistical sense, are available.

The selection rules fir twinning in fcc, bcc, and hcp lattices as established in Part I are used to predict the positions, relative to the matrix (untwinned) reciprocal lattice, of reflections due to double diffraction from the twins. These doubly diffracted reciprocal lattice points, which often coincide with ordinary matrix reciprocal lattice points, are deduced from kinematical considerations. 1. INTRODUCTION. A Bragg diffracted beam under certain conditions may be rediffracted to produce a third beam i .e., the incident beam, the first diffracted beam, and the rediffracted beam). In such a case an initial incident beam is diffracted by a set of planes; the diffracted beam may then be rediffracted by a second set of crystallographically different planes. The initially diffracted beam acts as an incident beam for the second set of planes, thus resulting in a twice-diffracted beam. This twice-diffracted beam may be regarded as a singly diffracted beam from a set of lattice planes whose structure factor is zero. In order to find the reciprocal lattice point corresponding to the doubly diffracted beam, it is customary1,2 to combine vectorially the component reciprocal lattice vectors which head to the extra reflections. For example, hcp metals may exhibit the forbidden (0001) reflections.* As Fig. 1 shows, the (0001) reciprocal lattice point results from: (1010) + (1011) = (0001) Similarly, combination of the beams (1011) and (1010) gives rise to: (1011)- (1010) = (0001) As Pashley and stowell2 have pointed out, even if in fact the double diffraction points lie on the Ewald sphere, they may not actually represent observed doubly diffracted beams because the initially diffracted primary beam, i.e., the source, must also correspond to a reciprocal lattice point which lies on the sphere of reflection; however, the reciprocal lattice point corresponding to the planes causing the rediffraction need not lie on the sphere. A little consideration of the Ewald construction in Fig. 2 makes this argument clear. In Fig. 2 the incident beam is represented by the wave vector ko. This beam is initially diffracted by the lattice planes (hkl) which are represented by the reciprocal lattice vector r(hk1) The reciprocal lattice point (hkl) of course lies on the Ewald sphere in order that the Bragg condition be satisfied. The initially diffracted beam is represented by the wave vector kl. If now kl is rediffracted by a second set of planes (h'k'l') resulting in k2 the lattice point (h"k"l") must lie on the Ewald sphere if the double diffracted beam k2 is to be observed. It is clear that (h"k"l") is the vector sum of (hkl) and (h'k'l'), and that (h'k'l') need not in fact lie on the Ewald sphere. In the usual1,2 analysis the origin (000) of the reciprocal lattice is shifted to the point (hkl). However the translation (000)— (hkl) automatically shifts the point (h'k'l') to the Ewald sphere, i.e., (h'k'l')— (h"k"1"). It is to be seen that (hkl), the source reflection, must lie on the Ewald sphere; if it does not the translation (000) — (hkl) places the "new" origin off the sphere, not satisfying the Ewald construction and hence the Bragg condition. The point (h"k"1") of course must lie on the sphere if it corresponds to an observed doubly diffracted beam. It is to be noted that crystals having the hcp structure, as just discussed, are intrinsically capable (i.e., without lattice defects such as twins) of double diffraction, as contrasted to fcc and bcc crystals which are extrinsically capable (requiring lattice defects or reoriented lattice regions). Introduction Heap and dump leaching are low-cost metal production techniques that are gaining in popularity among gold and copper producers. However, the flow of solution in heaps and dumps has received little attention in the literature. This is unfortunate since solution flow is one of the few parameters subject to operator control. Thus, solution management may well influence both operating costs and plant performance. Costs aside, there are two important aspects of solution flow to be considered -the metallurgical and the hydrological. Some of the metallurgical factors have recently been discussed (Jackson and Ream, 1980; Schlitt, 1984; Schlitt and Nicolai, 1987). These cover solution application rates and methods, irrigation rates, leach-rest cycles, and nonvertical solution flow. According to Caldwell and Moss (1985), however, the hydrological aspects may be more significant than the metallurgical ones. In particular, a phreatic surface will form when excessive flow leads to an accumulation of water and the associated buildup of pore pressure within the rock pile. Such internal flooding can either originate at the foundation or at some other zone of very low permeability. The latter condition gives rise to an impounded volume of solution, i.e., a perched water table (see Whiting, 1985). Caldwell and Moss point out that a rising zone of saturation is probably the most common cause of dump failures. Of course, such failures have even occurred in heaps that were carefully prepared for leaching (Milligan and Engelhardt, 1984). Thus, flooded conditions and perched water tables represent an important safety consideration as well as having an impact on metallurgical performance. The following sections describe a case history in which a perched water table developed within a copper leach dump. The description includes background information, solution flow rates, and metallurgical data. Then this situation is compared to one involving normal drainage. Description of the leach system The leach dump in the case history is located at a shutdown open pit copper mine. It was built in two lifts, with the second added some 20 years after the first. There is little detailed information available on the initial lift. It was built with rail¬hauled waste and was generally less than 30 m (100 ft) high at the crest. The area available for leaching was about 120 m (400 ft) wide and more than 380 m (1250 ft) long. The dump surface was prepared for leaching by dozing ponds approximately 12 m by 12 m by 2.5 to 3.0 m deep (40 ft by 40 ft by 8 to 10 ft). The ponds were leached by flooding with barren leach solution returned from a scrap iron cementation plant. Based on mill feed at the time, the average waste grade was probably close to 0.4% Cu. The first lift leached well. It accepted high flows, which together with the waste grade, produced a rich pregnant leach solution (PLS). Old records indicate a PLS of "50 lb Cu/ 1000 gal," or about 6 g/L. As later drilling would indicate, such a high tenor led to dissolution of considerable scrap iron that was returned to the dump. The iron then hydrolyzed and settled out on the pond bottoms. In addition, the waste settled substantially so that the unleached crest was 3.0 to 4.5 m (10 to 15 ft) above the ponded area. Eventually, the leachable copper was extracted and the dump became less permeable. Thus, the PLS tenor dropped until it became uneconomical. About ten years later, mining resumed and the decision was made to add another lift to the dump. This was done without giving much thought to a subsequent leach operation. Hence a 24-m (80-ft) lift was built on top of the original dump. The surface of the latter was not prepared in any way, e.g., by leveling and/or deep ripping, prior to over-dumping. Examination of subsequent drill cuttings indicated that the new lift contained about 0.2% Cu, with chalcopyrite and chalcocite (50:50) being the predominant copper minerals. Most of the chalcocite occurred as rimming on the abundant pyrite, with the pyrite to chalcopyrite ratio estimated at 10 to 1. The use of 100- and 120-ton trucks for haulage caused some waste compaction during emplacement. In addition, the host rock itself was relatively soft, being a porphyry intrusive material that was partially altered to clay. As a result of the initial compaction and clay swelling, the rate of water percolation from the new leach ponds was slow and the ponds often contained considerable standing water. Even frequent ripping failed to provide a sustained improvement in the percolation rate. The poor surface permeability was exacerbated by hydrolysis of iron salts which settled as a layer on the pond bottoms. Partly as a result of the permeability problems, metallurgical performance was not up to expectations. These had been based on laboratory tests which showed about 20% copper solubilization in two weeks. Continued copper extraction in the tests also suggested that a substantial percentage of the copper would eventually be recovered. However, the PLS grade in the actual operation peaked briefly at about 0.48 g/L Cu (4 lb Cu/1000 gal), then declined to a range of only 0.24 to 0.36 g/L Cu (2 to 3 lb Cu/1000 gal). The poor leaching was traced to a lack of oxidation of the sulfides. There were two principal observations supporting this conclusion. First, there was no evidence of any heat being generated within the dump. As discussed elsewhere (Schlitt and Jackson, 1981; Hiskey and Schlitt, 1982), pyrite oxidation is quite exothermic and the high pyrite content of the waste should have led to an increase in the temperature of the leach solution as it percolated through the rock pile. Second, there was no sign of any natural convective air flow through the dump.

"Geometallurgy brings together geologists, mine planners and process engineers to extract meaningful mineralogical and textural information from an orebody, with a view to predicting its metallurgical response. Preferably, automated analytical techniques, which provide mineralogical and textural information, should process a large number of samples quickly, relatively inexpensively and reliably. Microfocus X-ray computed tomography (µXCT) is capable of producing 3D volumetric information on texture and mineralogy that satisfies some of these criteria. µXCT has been used extensively to study the porosity and internal pore structure of iron ore pellets as part of downstream processing. It has not been widely applied to earlier mineralogical and textural analysis of unprocessed ore, due to the limited ability of X-rays to penetrate high-density samples. This chapter will outline the operating procedures at Freeport Kaolin Co.5 kaolin mining operations in Georgia, with emphasis on explaining new techniques recently introduced to reclaim mined-out areas for reforestation. Kaolin is found in the central Georgia area (See Fig. 1) in lenticular, sedimentary deposits of high purity. The beds are Cretaceous in age and vary from 4 to 60 ft in thickness, under a cover of sedimentary overburden ranging from 5 to 150 ft. The kaolin beds contain the mineral kaolinite (a hydrous aluminum silicate) and have a particle-size distribution ranging from about 20µ to the submicron level and averaging about 60% below 2µ. The only contaminants in the deposits are coarse mica, quartz particles, and minor amounts of iron and titanium oxides. These kaolin deposits vary widely in quality from deposit to deposit and also vary within individual deposits. Some of the controlling quality specifications which are determined during exploration are viscosity in water suspension, optical brightness index as measured by reflectance, amenability to bleaching, and particle-size distribution. For this reason, only a small portion of the total kaolin reserves in the Georgia belt are suitable for wet processing for the present markets being served. Kaolin clays are selectively mined by different mechanical methods and are beneficiated by both wet and dry processing to produce a number of products used as fillers and coatings in the paper industry; fillers or additives in the paint, plastic, and rubber industries; and as basic raw materials for the ceramic industry. The State of Georgia is the largest kaolin producer in the United States, with 3,206,454 tons produced in 1966, according to U.S. Bureau of Mines statistics. Freeport Kaolin Co’s processing plant is located in Gordon, Ga., about 20 miles east of Macon, Ga.

"INTRODUCTION The behavior of particles in a sound field has long been of scientific interest since Kundt (1) 5/ made his classic experiments on some of the interesting effects of standing waves in cylindrical tubes. With the development of the electronic tube and its application to continuous generation of sound, experimental investigation of the Kundt tube was renewed (2). The more intense vibrations set up by a continuously vibrating diaphragm or rod produce even more striking effects than those observed by Kundt. Instead of the striations at the antinode produced by the stroked rod, then, wafer like barriers are formed at the antinodes, sometimes extending over the entire cross-section of the tube. Furthermore, it was observed independently by Andrade (3), Brandt, Freund and Hiedemann (4); and by investigators in the Bureau of Mines laboratories (5) that aerosols, such as ammonium chloride or tobacco smoke, could be flocculated quickly if passed through an intense sound field, particularly when a standing wave field was set up by a resonant enclosure. Because of its possibilities as a new means for removing suspended particles from dust-laden gaseous furance or smoke, the phenomena attending the behavior of suspended particles in a und field have been studied intermittently by the Bureau of Mines over the past decade.The first experimental work was done with a magnetostriction vibrator and a Hartmann air-jet generator as sound sources. It soon became evident that neither type was entirely satisfactory. Low mechanical efficiency is an inherent characteristic of magnetostriction generators, and the air-jet generator is difficult to control and does not permit accurate measurement of the acoustic output. The search for a suitable sound source led to the development of an electromagnetic generator, which is by far the most suitable for study of the effects of intensive high-frequency sound fields in gases (6)."

ARSENIC, antimony and phosphorus are now used in the brass industry as standard inhibitors in preventing dezincification in [ ] condenser tubes. This subject has been thoroughly covered by Barry,1 who described the testing procedure by total immersion of suitable specimens in a I per cent cupric chloride solution at definite temperatures. Effects of dezincification were then determined by loss in tensile strength and elongation of the test specimens after definite periods of immersion. In the crystallography of the chemical elements as tabulated by William Hume-Rothery,2 phosphorus (metallic), arsenic, antimony and bismuth are placed in group V-B and the type of crystal lattice for arsenic, antimony and bismuth is given as rhombohedral. The Metals Handbook3 [ ] lists them as "rhombohedral hexagonal," with the additional notation that for arsenic this is the ordinary form at 20°C.; other modifications known or probable at other temperatures. In view of these statements and of the fact that phosphorus, arsenic and antimony are effective in increasing the resistance to dezincification, it was natural to assume that bismuth would act in the same manner.
