WITH the large amount of metallurgical re- search work now being done and the constant effort of the engineer to effect economies of operation, I think it is a safe prediction that the next few years will see a great change in the handling of mine products. The well-managed mine, with sufficient ore reserves to warrant the necessary plants, will increasingly call upon the metallurgist and chemist for the solution of its problems. Shipping sorted ore or concentrate to the nearest smelter will not be the course followed. From ore to metal, or at least to a product directly salable to the consumer, will be the practice followed. As a consequence, mine managers will be increasingly interested in metal trade problems. By metal trade I mean the buying, selling, shipping, handling, and all the practices, forms and customs that go to make up the trade.

Federal and state regulations, in an effort to reduce acid rain, are becoming increasing more stringent regarding sulfur content of fossil fuels. Whereas coal from Illinois and Ohio contains between 1.5 and 37. sulfur, Wyoming has billions of tons of coal reserves containing less than O.5/% sulfur. However, much of Wyoming's coal is high in moisture, 25-30%, and low in energy, 8,200 to 8,900 BTU, vs. 10,500+ BTU for Illinois and Ohio Basin coals. Wyoming currently ships in excess of 130 million tons of coal to utilities as distant as Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska, Louisiana, Oklahoma, and Texas. With freight charges ranging from $12.00-$20.00/ton, more than $1.5 billion a year is spent to transport water. A test shipment of more than 50,000 tons of Wyoming coal has recently been made from Mobil's Cabello Rojo Mine, south of Gillette, by Burlington Northern to the Robert's Bank British Columbia coal terminal for transloading and shipment to Taiwan Power Company. This coal assayed approximately 8,400 BTU/lb. and 277. moisture. Carbontec Energy Corporation feels the future availability of dried coal containing 11,000+ BTU could substantially enhance the potential export as well as the domestic market for Wyoming coal. Large and small utilities, along with industrial furnaces require tens of millions of tons of Wyoming, West Virginia, and other Eastern The federal government is encouraging the expenditure of hundreds of million of dollars by utilities to retrofit their boilers to allow them to burn higher sulfur coal. This program, if carried to completion, would cost many tens of billions of dollars, with the net result being high power costs sustained by the utilities. These costs will be passed on and paid for by the American consumer. A sensible alternative would be the burning of low sulfur coal by the utilities, without costly capital and operating expenditures. Carbontec Energy feels the successful operation of a Carbondry Coal Drying Plant in Wyoming will be the forerunner to other similar and larger operations in the State. CARBONTEC RESEARCH The activities of Carbontec's personnel to develop a viable process to dry sub-bituminous and lignite coal goes back some 14 years; in fact, for some of us it goes back to 1962 when we were involved in a program under which lignite coal from Truax Trayer's Velva mine was placed in low sulfur coal, which are burned alone or blended with high sulfur, Midwestern coal. Carbontec believes that a high BTU. reasonably priced, shippable coal fuel produced in Wyoming and delivered at costs competitive with Eastern low sulfur coal, could offer substantial benefits to Wyoming coal producers, utility customers, and to the State of Wyoming.

MAN?S desire to harden metal is older than recorded history and obviously would date from the moment when he found his implements were not equal to the demands of service. This need for hardness in metal may be divided roughly into two main classifications: (1 :I need for hardness through- out-for purposes of greater strength or elasticity of the whole implement or member, and (2) need for surface hardness alone. A strong steel needed to transmit stresses or resist de- formation is an example of the first class. In metals only surface- hardened, the chief need is for resistance to wear. Obviously the whole gamut of all uses can be imagined- from the extreme of a simple cantilever supporting a load in space to that of a solidly supported face plate serving to resist wear. It is the in- creasing of wear resistance which I propose to discuss.

In a recent investigation1 on the properties of chromium, and of Cr-10 wt pct W and Cr-5 wt pct Mo alloys at elevated temperatures, it was found that intercrystalline cavities developed in all of these materials during tensile creep at 950°C, and that the cavities led to intercrystalline fracture. There were some interesting differences, however, between the cavities produced in the pure metal and those in the alloys; these differences, moreover, were associated with a difference in ductility. The relevant conditions of creep testing are specified in the captions to Figs. 1 and 3. Chromium showed the presence of quite large intercrystalline cavities, Fig. 1, and these were more or less randomly distributed around the boundaries. The chromium alloys, on the other hand, showed the presence of both small cavities and cracks at the grain boundaries, Fig. 3; it is apparent that the cracks are formed by the linking together of the small cavities. Compared with the traditional pre-treatment process, biological oxidation process has many advantages including higher gold recovery, less cost, easier operation. The bio-oxidation reactor is the most important equipment for biological oxidation process. In this paper, the characteristics of biological oxidation are investigated, and the design principles are proposed based on laboratory tests. Both increasing the tank height and taking new inflation system can enhance higher dissolved oxygen. The new type of large-scale industrial bio-oxidation reactor is designed, which is 9.5 m in diameter and 10 m in height. The bio-oxidation reactor metallurgical performance has been tested by industrial-scale experiment. The slurry of flotation concentrate is divided into two parts to feed two bio-oxidation reactors. The feeding rates of two reactors are adjusted on the basis of getting the same content of S, Fe, As in overflow. The result shows that the feeding rate of the new type of 700 m3 bio-oxidation reactor is 3.72 m3 per hour, and the feed rate of the conventional 700 m3 bio-oxidation reactor was 3.23 m3 per hour. The processing capacity of the former is 15.2% higher than that of the later, which demonstrates the new type of bio-oxidation reactor has higher oxidation rate.

Consumption of Diesel fuel oil in the United States has increased very rapidly during recent years. At the present time approximately 5 percent of the crude oil refined in this country is said to be processed for this purpose. This figure represents approximately 20 percent of the total distillate-type fuel oils now being produced in the United States. One factor contributing greatly to the recent increase in consumption of Diesel fuel oil has been the conversion from steam locomotives to Diesel engines by a number of railroads. Other contributing factors are greFl.ter use of Diesel engine8 in buses, trucks, tractors, water craft, and stationary power plants. The growing importance of Diesel fuel oil has resulted in a need by the petroleum industry, engine manufacturers, and consumers for more information regarding the types and quality of Diesel fuels currently being marketed. To supply this information, the American Petroleum Institute and the Bureau of Mines, United states Department of the Interior, under a cooperative agreement, have conducted a survey of Diesel fuel all produced in refineries in this country during 1950. Under the agreements, samples of Diesel fuel oil, representative of actual shipments, were analyzed by the manufacturers in accordance with instructions issued by the Fuel Survey Panel of the Automotive Research Committee of the American Petroleum Institute. Results of the analyses were transmitted to the Bureau of Mines, and that agency has studied the data and compiled them by groups in comparable form as shown in the tables of this report.

Francisco, CaI.-A sliding. scale of royalties was proposed to the Department of the Interior in connection with the fixing of royalties to be charged upon oil leases made on the Osage Reservation in Oklahoma. The possibility of evasion and difficulty of enforcement required close inspection to satisfy all interests, particularly in connection with the exemption from royalty on oil to equal maintenance and interest on the junk. Mr. Johnson discusses the block method, the period method, and the cumulative method, and favors the adoption of the cumulative method with a proviso that the wells should be permitted to be pumped until the gross income is as low as the maintenance cost, which would mean exemption from royalty on the smallest wells. He recommends that depth be the variable factor upon which the sliding royalty is based and suggests that on partially developed territory in the Osage, the royalty be one-sixth for oil wells averaging less than 2,000 ft. in depth, one-eighth for wells from 2,000 to 3,000 ft., and one-twelfth above 3,000 ft.; for the rest of the Osage he suggests one-eighth above 2,800 ft. and one-twelfth below that depth. The net result, if Mr. Johnson's suggestions had been accepted in the Osage, would have been to reduce the then existing rate of royalty and considerably increase the cost of administration. The difficulties in determining the size of wells to be exempt and the possibility of obtaining oil at different depths in the same well might lead to complications which are avoided by charging a flat royalty as now universally charged throughout the United States. It is not uncommon to reduce the royalty when the production of the wells becomes unprofitable at an existing rate of royalty, accomplishing very much the same results as Mr. Johnson has attempted to accomplish by the cumulative royalties, and probably in a manner far more satisfactory to the operator and the lessor. MCLAUGHLIN, San Francisco, Cal.-The net revenue of the well depends, first, on the cost of production; second, on the amount of oil produced; therefore it would be impossible under Mr. Johnson's system to set a royalty which would be fair to all concerned. If it is impossible to set it at the beginning, it is certainly further impossible to do it from day to clay. I think it is entirely impracticable of application.

On August 4th, 2014, a breach occurred in the Perimeter Embankment of the Tailings Storage Facility (TSF) located at the Mount Polley Mine, releasing approximately 10.6 million m3 of supernatant water, 7.3 million m3 of tailings solids, 6.5 million m3 of tailings interstitial water and 0.6 million m3of construction materials. A Temporary Upstream Rockfill Berm was constructed between August 2014 and February 2015 within the area of the tailings dam failure in order to retain the remaining tailings solids during the low flows of the winter season. The Temporary Upstream Rockfill Berm was constructed as part of the initial response phase, with the primary objective to abate the flow of tailings into the receiving environment. A secondary objective of its construction was facilitating the required investigation works downstream of the tailings dam failure. The selection of the coarse grained material used in the construction of the Temporary Upstream Rockfill Berm was based on the availability of the material (timeliness of construction) and the non-water retaining design of this initial response phase. Consequently, an alternative method was required in order to prevent further loss of mine-affected water and tailings from the TSF, as well as to provide short-term contingency water storage, during high flow conditions expected in late spring. Golder Associates Ltd. designed the 2015 Freshet Management Embankment, a deep mixing cut-off wall, to meet these site requirements, which was constructed by Mount Polley Mining Corporation and Golder Construction Inc. between December 2015 and April 2015. The works included 132 soil cement panels constructed to depths of up to 27 meters. This aspect of the works was completed using an RG25S Bauer CSM rig on a 24 hour per day, 7 day per week schedule. The cut-off wall specifications included a target unconfined compressional strength (UCS) of between 1 and 2 MPa, a maximum hydraulic conductivity of 1x10-6 cm/s, and a ductility to enable the soil cement to undergo a minimum of 5% strain without a reduction in strength or increase in hydraulic conductivity. In order to control and assure the quality of the soil cement, 2553 wet grab specimens were retrieved from the fresh soil cement panels using a project-developed sampler. Four of the soil cement panels were cored with a mud-rotary drill rig and optical and acoustic televiewers were placed into the boreholes in order to log several relevant parameters, including image, texture, relative hardness, borehole-shape, and temperature.

The People's Republic of China has abundant coal resources with proven reserves amounting to 582 Gt (641 billion st). Recognizing coal as a major energy source on which to build the country's industrial and economic base, there has been a rapid increase in production since the founding of the People's Republic. In 1949, only 29.4 Mt (32.4 million st) of coal was mined. Production has increased to 576.5 Mt (635.5 million st), exclusive of Taiwan, at present, making China the third largest coal producing country in the world. Plans call for a 4-5% increase in annual production for the next 20 years. Coal constitutes 70% of the primary energy consumption in China. The remaining 30% is divided between petroleum and natural gas with 26% and hydropower with 4%. Coal use and consumption is divided as follows. General industrial use comprised 48.9%, power generation uses 20.1%, and coking accounts for 10.5% (6.3% for metallurgy and 4.2% for chemical industry). Domestic use such as home heating and cooking makes up 17.8% and coal-fired steam engines for railways uses 4.7%. Coal Districts Coal underlies about 1/18 of China's land area. It occurs in 30 provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities. In addition, the western interior region, which has not been explored, may contain sizable reserves. Based on geology, geography, and administration, the coal fields can be grouped into five districts as shown in Fig. 1. The north China district, the heart of the industrial base for the country, has the most extensive and largest deposits of the five districts. This amounts to almost 40% of the country's total reserves. The largest coal basin with proven reserves of 181.4 Gt (200 billion st) and the most exploitable seams is located some 300 km (186 miles) southwest of Beijing (Peking) in Shanxi Province. Centered around Taiyuan, the compound field extends from Datong in the north to Xian in the south. Its western extension is not known fully. The Northwest and Northeast districts contain the second and third largest deposits. The biggest coal field in South China is located in the Sichuan and Guizhou Provinces near Chongqing. At present, it is not known if sizable coal measures exist in the Tibetan district. Coal Types China's coal varies widely both in age and rank. Geologically, coal measures were deposited from the lower Carboniferous (Pennsylvanian of the US) and Permian of late Paleozoic, mainly during the Jurassic of the Mesozoic and peri¬odically throughout the Cenozoic. Interest in the sink-float plant operated by the Bunker Hill and Sullivan Mining and Concentrating Co. at Kellogg, Idaho, has recently been largely confined to the preparation and reconditioning of the galena medium. The ease and simplicity of these operations in a concentrating mill producing a flotation lead concentrate has occasioned enough comment to possibly justify a brief description. The subject is treated from an operator's viewpoint only; no effort is made to discuss it in a theoretical or technical manner. Plant at Bunker Hill The sink-float plant was first operated in December 1941. It was built for the purpose of quickly increasing mill capacity with a minimum of equipment. It is the Huntington-Heberlein sink and float process using galena medium and is operated under license from the Sink and Float Corporation, New York city. Lead-zinc ore from the Bunker Hill mine is crushed to pass a 1¼ in, screen and is then washed and separated on vibrating screens having 4½-mm. round-hole punched plates. The screen under-size, amounting to 33 per cent of the mill feed, is dewatered and sent to the ball-mill feed bins. The screen oversize goes to the sink-float plant, where 50 per cent of the oversize, or 33 per cent of the mill feed, is float, which is washed free of medium and disposed of as a tailing. The remaining 33 per cent is sink, which, after washing, is crushed to pass 36 in. and joins the under-size in the ball-mill feed bins. The normal plant capacity is 1700 tons per 24 hr. About 1.7 per cent of the total lead and 3.3 per cent of the total zinc in the feed is lost with the sink-float tailings (Table I). More complete descriptions of the H. H. process and Bunker Hill sink-float plant are given in several recent articles, listed at the end of the paper. Preparation OF Medium at Bunker Hill New medium is made intermittently as needed, usually 12 hr. in each 6 days. Unfortunately, Mr. Meissner has not indicated a single statement or conclusion in my paper that he wishes to controvert; but as there is evidently a difference of opinion between us I will disregard this fact, and will discuss those conclusions of his that seem to me not to be justified by the facts of general practice, or even by the data which he produces to support them. it is an established fact that the collecting properties of xanthates and anionic collectors are dependent on the hydrocarbon chain length. This is ascribed to the greater adsorption densities caused by increasing the xanthate chain length. As batch flotation tests showed similar trends for amines, an investigation of the adsorbing properties of amines was undertaken. Because earlier investigations showed adsorption densities for dodecylamine salts on quartz varying as much as 20 times under apparently similar conditions,1-4 it was decided to make a survey of the changes in adsorption density due to the drying conditions of the quartz. Bore surfaces of used guns commonly show a pattern of cracks in various degrees of development. It has been suggested that these cracks may aid erosion by providing channelways for the gases, eventually leading to the tearing out of blocks of metal. Under the general studies of gun erosion conducted at the Geophysical Laboratory it appeared desirable to consider this factor, and to determine the resistance to surface cracking offered by gun steel and by various other materials that might be used in the bores of guns. Method and Apparatus In order to make such a determination it is necessary to have (I) an arrangement in which the surface to be studied can be subjected to conditions similar to those in a gun with respect to temperature, pressure (developed by explosion gases), composition of the gases and length of time the surface is exposed to the gases; and (2) a specimen that can be examined readily after any number of shots, and then fired again, if necessary. The first of these conditions can be met by using an explosion vessel designed by H. S. Roberts of the Geophysical Laboratory. Fig I shows a cross-section of the apparatus. The "gun" G from which the charge is fired is made from the receiver of a caliber 0.30 army rifle, M1903, and the charges are prepared in caliber 0.30 cartridge cases. The test specimen S is held in place by a cone-shaped plug P and by a steel bridge B which is bolted to the outside of the explosion vessel on either side of the section shown. The plug, in turn, is held in place by a screw collar C. Maximum pressure is controlled by a brass rupture disk R. Part of the explosion gases flow past the two flat areas on S. Temperature and composition of gases, and the time before the rupture disk breaks, can be controlled by amount and kind of powder used, and pressure can be controlled by using rupture disks of different thickness. While the explosion vessel used was not designed so that temperature and pressure could be measured, in other vessels of closely similar size and shape containing proportionate charges of the same kind of powder as that used for standard testing procedure, values of 2700°K and 50,000 psi were obtained. Since the orifices past the flat areas on the plug are small compared to the rupture disk hole (I:I6), most of the gas goes out through the rupture disk when it breaks. The amount that goes by the plug depends on (I) the pressure attained before the rupture disk breaks and (2) the time it takes for this pressure to be built UP. The Morenci concentrator of the Phelps Dodge Corporation is a part of the project that was completed after five years had been spent in development of the open-pit mine, equipment and process testing in the former No. 6 concentrator, and construction of the reduction works. The reduction works, of which the concentrator is a part, is about a mile and a quarter southeast of Morenci, on the highway that leads up Morenci Canyon. The concentrator has a nominal capacity for the treatment of 45,000 tons of ore daily. The original plant, which has a rated capacity of 25,000 tons of ore daily and is now in its fifth year of operation, began production on Jan. 30, 1942. The addition, to increase the capacity 80 pct, began operation on Dec. I, 1943. The equipment of the original plant has been described in Mining and Metallurgy (May 1942). NO changes in equipment were recommended for installation in the concentrator extension and only one major change, forced by a shortage of maintenance labor, has since been made. Metallurgical treatment has been altered in some ways as experiments progressed and as labor and economic conditions dictated. No complete description of the operation of the concentrator has been published, so this paper will record such operating and equipment changes as have been necessary, the operating methods that have been developed and the metallurgical results that have been obtained. Descriptions are given in the order of the processes with a flowsheet and an equipment list of each process for convenient reference. The questions asked by engineer visitors have guided the detail in which operation and maintenance are described. During the period Jan. 30, 1942 to Sept. I, 1946, ore milled has totaled 43,595,253 dry tons, from which 1,643,885 tons of concentrate have been made, containing an indicated production of 783,164,-809 lb of copper. The principal results obtained in operation of the concentrator during the years 1942 to 1945, inclusive, and to Sept. I, 1946 are shown in Table I. A graphic general flowsheet of the plant is given in Fig I. Ore The Morenci ore that is now being treated is a medium-hard monzonite porphyry in which the principal sulphide minerals are chalcocite and pyrite. A minor amount of covellite is present. Chalcopyrite and bornite have been observed under the microscope. The chalcocite occurs mainly as a coating on pyrite. Some of the coatings are so thick that the pyrite presents the appearance of being an inclusion in chalcocite. Some are less than one micron thick and are barely visible at 500 diameters magnification of a polished cross section. Some chalcocite is present as a in in the gangue. Various oxidized copper minerals are present as a result of oxidation in place but they represent a minor proportion of the copper minerals of the ore body. Oxidation

THE most successful and largest meeting of the Auxiliary to the A. I. M. E. was held this year. Great praise is due Mrs. Arthur S. Dwight, the acting chairman of the Ladies' Committee in the ab-sence of Mrs. Barron, and the other members of her committee for the able way in which they planned and carried out a varied and interesting program. Miss Margaret Callow, chairman of the Junior Committee, with her co-workers, made the days delightful for the Junior members, as well as visiting daughters. Under the leadership of Mrs. Jenkins, the registration of the ladies proceeded smoothly Monday morning. At the Mrs. Jenkins became ill with pneumonia on the second day of the meeting and was taken from the dinner to a hospital where she died the following Sunday. Born in Kansas City fifty years ago, she was an active and valued member of the Auxiliary in which she had long represented the Puget Sound Section. Mr. and Mrs. Jenkins, the latter treasurer of the Utah Consolidated Copper Co., had previously lived at McGill, Nev., where they are well known. She leaves a son and a daughter. luncheon on the fifth floor, Mrs. DeGolyer and Mrs. Church arranged a delightful hour, when greeting visit-ing friends proved more. interesting than food. Mrs. Bain efficiently ushered the ladies through the after-noon's program, seeing that they all found the buses on time. The first stop was at the Cloisters, where the quaint carvings and the faint odor of incense trans-ported all the visitors to the Middle Ages. That atmos-phere still clung, as we all looked at the marvelous collection of old Chinese jade, at the Metropolitan Museum, which was the next stop. The buses then took us to the MacDowell Club, where Mrs. Dwight gave a charming welcome, in the absence of the hostess, Mrs. Barron. The program, by Mr. and Mrs. Hardesty John¬son, was such a delight that repeated calls induced the artists to graciously respond with an encore. Then Mrs. Coster and Mrs. Sharpless assisted Mrs. Dwight in serving tea, about the glowing fireplace. In the evening the theater-goers guided by Mrs. Jordan were thrilled by "Interference.:" A detailed account of the annual meeting, in many ways the most interesting the Auxiliary has had, will be published later. This held the attention. of the mem-bers both morning and afternoon, on Tuesday. The absence of the President, Mrs. Barron, was much re-gretted, and the letter and the cablegram with her cor-dial greetings were much appreciated. Miss Stone ably presided in the place of Mrs. Barron, and graciously welcomed the incoming President, Mrs. Hoover. Her well-worded speech, accepting the office, was received with much enthusiasm. The visiting members were especially pleased with her description of herself as a "peripatetic-president." promising to visit the various sections as she crossed the continent on her frequent trips to California. An inspiring report was read from each section, and most particularly pleasing was a greet-ing brought by Mrs. Bateman of Toronto, from our sister organization in Canada. The sections are surely to be congratulated on their splendid work, not only for their own members, but also in sending clothing and other aids to the needy, as Mrs. Reynders directed, and in supporting libraries under the leadership of Mrs. Huntoon. The important work of the Educational Com-mittee, with its presentation of scholarships to various deserving young men, has been most efficiently carried on by Mrs. Jennings. Mrs. Jordan has inspired many to help in Braille, and Mrs. Eilers has extended the hos-pitality of the Auxiliary to many. The Washington Section is leading a movement to extend the privileges of Girl Scouting to the girls in lonely mining camps. The officers of the past year received flowers and grate-ful appreciation, and the incoming officers received a warm welcome. Very delightful features of the after-noon were the speech by the President of the A. I. M. E. for the coming year, Dr. George Otis Smith, and when a visiting member rose to say how much all the visiting members had enjoyed the Auxiliary's hospitality. The banquet and dance at the Waldorf were the most brilliant the Auxiliary has attended. Nearly twelve hundred were there to enjoy the festivity and to hear the speeches given, as Mr. Hoover and the other re-cipients accepted their medals and awards. The young people, the future supporters of the A. I. M. E. and the Auxiliary, enjoyed more hilarious tables in the bal-conies, and all enjoyed the dancing later.

Cementation Skanska were responsible for the design and installation of 200 linear meters of contiguous bored piled retaining wall and approximately 1300 bearing piles for a new commercial arena development in the North of England. Building new retaining walls adjacent to existing infrastructure presents numerous challenges concerning limiting disruption and potential damage to services. The retaining walls formed a partial basement meaning horizontal propping was not practicable. To provide time and cost saving to the project, Cementation Skanska developed a novel, space saving solution to traditional raking temporary propping of the retaining walls. The contiguous wall was propped in the temporary condition by perpendicular secant piled buttresses positioned to avoid the permanent works. The buttresses were constructed from existing ground level simplifying the construction sequence by negating the requirement for additional temporary works associated with conventional propping systems. This paper describes the design and construction of the buttress wall solution, considering retained heights up to 8m, with challenging ground conditions including worked coal seams. The design considered onerous deflection criteria focussing on the services running under the dual carriageway along the East of the site and complex loading conditions from the permanent propping solution resulting in a prop stiffness envelope. The paper will detail the design process for the buttress piles and contiguous piled wall, and the iterative prop stiffness approach utilising Plaxis 2D & Geosolve Wallap. This innovative approach to propping saved the project time and cost by omitting the need for additional temporary works following construction of the wall piles and allowing berms to be removed much earlier. This solution was also considered safer to operatives than raking props. Monitoring was undertaken during the excavation phase of the project and measured deflections were below those predicted during the design process, which could create efficiencies on future projects.

THE injury data and experience in this bulletin are presented in three general sections. The first section contains general and detailed data relating to 1948 injury experience in bituminous-coal and Pennsylvania anthracite mines, separately and combined into totals for all coal mines. The related employment, worktime, production, and productivity data are given in each breakdown of the statistical data. Tables 1 through 22 constitute a subsection and present statistics on number of injuries, frequency and severity rates, average severity, detailed and major causes of injuries, injury records of the coal-producing States, distribution of injuries by part of body, and distribution of injuries by days of disability. Tables 23 through 45, the second subsection, present injury experience in bituminous-coal mines by various selected factors of physical or operating conditions that ma contribute to the occurrence of injuries. The degree of mechanical loading, productivity, size of mine by number of men working and by tonnage mined, thickness of bed, length of shift, number of shifts, type of cap lamps, rating of mine as gassy or nongassy, type of ventilation, and combinations of these factors influencing mine safety are presented in this group of tables. Similar data on Pennsylvania anthracite mines are listed in tables 46 through 63, which comprise the third subsection. The second section of the report contains the generalized annual injury records of bituminous-coal, Pennsylvania anthracite, and all coal mines from the earliest available data through 1948. Tables 64 through 97 list the number of fatal and nonfatal injuries, injury rates, and causes of injuries on an industry basis, the long-term injury records of each coal-producing State, and the related employment, worktime, and production data.
