In this work, we have elucidated the two-step oxidative reaction mechanism of 2,4,5-trichlorophenol by adsorbing oxygen atom for oxidative decomposition reaction of 2,4,5-trichlorophenol on oxide catalyst surface using ab initio molecular orbital calculation. In the first oxidation, total energies of reaction products have been shown extremely stabilized at all oxidation positions. This reaction occurs due to charge transfer from benzene ring to adsorbing oxygen atom. As a result, ? bonding of benzene ring are weakened. However, the benzene ring of 2,4,5-trichlorophenol does not perform cleavage reaction. In the second oxidation, the benzene ring of 2,4,5-trichlorophenol can perform cleavage reaction, since the second oxidation obtains larger stabilized energies than the first oxidation.

The term potash refers to potassium oxide (K2O), a compound not found in nature or produced by man but used as a basis for comparison of all potassium compounds and now is applied generally to various compounds of potassium used by agriculture and industry. Potassium, the last of the three major plant foods to be used in appreciable quantities by agriculture, was originally produced only from organic materials for chemical uses. The first recorded identification of a mineral source of potassium was in 1797; but, until the discovery in 1839 of the large deposits of soluble potassium salts in Germany and their development in 1860-61, nearly all potassium compounds continued to come from organic sources. With the importance of potash to plant life discovered in 1840 by von Liebig and the production of potash in Germany after 1861, agriculture soon became the major consumer of potash. In 1958 agriculture accounted for about 95 pct of the total potash consumption; the chemical industry used the remaining 5 pct. Mineralogy and Geology Potassium, an important constituent of the earth's crust, occurs in many forms in numerous rocks and minerals, including water solutions, but is not found in its native state. Twenty-five of the more important potash minerals are listed in Table 1. The properties of the five potash minerals most common in Permian salt formations follow: Sylvite is isometric; has a hardness of 2, a specific gravity of 1.98, vitreous luster, and cubic cleavage; and ranges in color from clear to brick red. In taste it is similar to halite but has a sharper taste and a cooling effect on the tongue. It is very plastic under pressure. Langbeinite is isometric; has a hardness of 4, a specific gravity of 2.82, vitreous luster, conchoidal fracture, and no cleavage; and ranges in color from clear to gray. The geostatistical Discrete Gaussian (DG) model is demonstrated to be capable of providing an effective means of implementing change of support for Enterprise-style mineralisation and thus providing reliable global recoverable resource estimates. At Enterprise, sample grade distribution proves to be highly positively skewed, therefore significant deskewing of the histogram and reduction of variance occurs when going from sample to block support. The DG model was experimentally tested in'the Southern Primary Zone (SPZ) at Enterprise, where high anisotropy ratios and pronounced short range structures are observed in variograms. The experimental test was run for a change of support for which the variance reduction was. approximately 60 per cent. This reduction is similar to that predicted by Krige's Relationship ('the volume-variance relationship') for the practical situation of a change of support from 5 m vertical blasthole samples to 3 m x 8 m x 5 m selective mining unit (SMU) blocks. The DG model was found to correctly predict the grade tonnage relationships for a wide range of cut off grades. The experimental test indicated that, given a representative histogram and variogram, the DG change of support provides a computationally efficient and practical means of reliably assessing global mineable resources at the early stages of a mining project. Further, it allows a range of selectivity strategies to be meaningfully and comparatively considered prior to mining.

The kinetics of oxychlorination of MgO by Cl2+O2 was studied in the temperature range of 850 °C - 1025 °C, using thermogravimetric analysis. The effects of C12/02 ratio, gas velocity, temperature and partial pressure of reactive gases on the reaction rate were investigated. The oxychlorination process was characterized by an apparent activation energy of about 214 kJ/mol. The reaction orders with respect to C12+O2. C12 and O2 at 950 °C were about 0.65.0.98, and -0.37, respectively. Some data about oxychlorination kinetics of MgO, Cr2O3, and MgCr2O4 contained in chromite were compared. Efficiency of using oxychlorination for the removal of iron oxides contained in magnesia was demonstrated.

Researchers at NIOSH’s Pittsburgh Mining Research Division (PMRD) performed comparative testing of six different water sprays at pressures ranging from 689 kPa (100 psi) to 6,895 kPa (1,000 psi) in a 14.5-m3 (512-ft3) confined dust chamber. Testing was conducted to determine the effect of various pressures on each spray’s respirable coal dust knockdown ability. It is known that higher water pressures are typically preferred for lowering airborne dust concentrations, but it was important to determine at what pressure range the dust knockdown ability of each spray plateaus or reaches its minimum dust concentration. Results from this testing showed that several sprays saw up to 100% decrease in dust concentrations during the five-minute water spray testing period, with some occurring well below the maximum 6,895 kPa (1,000 psi) spray pressure.

TURNBULL and his collaborators1,2 have developed the theory of homogeneous nucleation as applied, inter alia, to solidification of liquid metals. Vonnegut³ and Turnbull4 have shown that if a liquid metal is subdivided into small droplets a vast majority of them will undercool very considerably before solidification, generally to as low as about 0.8 of the freezing temperature on the absolute scale. The nuclei effective at small degrees of supercooling in bulk metal seem to be internal or surface heterogeneities, relatively small in number. If the metal is subdivided, those droplets that happen to contain such nuclei will solidify at a temperature not greatly below the true freezing point, but only a small part of the whole volume will be affected and the majority of the drops will under-cool to the much lower temperature at which homo- geneous nucleation occurs as a result of fluctuations. It occurred to one of the authors that an appropriate subdivision to give effective freedom from random nuclei is produced during the solidification of many alloys that contain a minor amount of a phase of low melting point, and that one might then expect marked undercooling of the distributed phase. Experimental: The alloys selected for initial study were copper with minor amounts of lead and bismuth, and aluminum with tin. In all these alloys, the major component freezes at a temperature not much below that of the pure metal, and there is little further change in constitution on cooling until the lower melting point constituent freezes in an almost pure state. Cooling curves were taken using the controlled heat flow method permitting approximate specific heats to be obtained. Chromel-alumel thermocouples were used, with the standard emf tables, since extreme precision was not needed. The crucible (3/4 in. id, 5/16 in. wall) was made of B & W K-20 insulating brick. It held about 10 cc of the alloy being investigated. The cooling rate was 2.5" to 2.9°C per min under a controlled temperature difference of 20°. Approximate specific heats were computed from the inverse rate curves together with data from a blank run and from a standard run with a copper cylinder of known heat capacity. The alloys for investigation were made from high-purity metals (99.99+pct) and cast into graphite molds. The castings were machined to fit the crucible and to provide a hole for the inner thermocouple. Cooling curves were taken after heating to a temperature about 50" above the melting point of the minor, lower melting-point, constituent. Results The lead phase in an alloy of copper with 5 pct lead did not undercool more than 3" below the melting point of lead (327°C) either as cast or after annealing to produce a new dispersion of the liquid phase. A copper-zinc-lead alloy with 23.75 pct zinc and 5 pct lead undercooled more but showed no thermal effect below 319°C. A cast alloy of copper with 5 pct bismuth undercooled to 249°C (M.P. bismuth 27l °C), but once solidification started it was completed at the same temperature. This was anticipated, since the bismuth forms a nearly continuous phase between the grains of copper, and a solid crystal nucleated anywhere would rapidly* con- sume the entire network of liquid, unless the physical continuity of the liquid were broken through volume changes, inadequate fluidity, or gas evolution. Similar arguments apply in the case of copper-lead alloys, where the lead-rich liquid forms a network along grain edges, though not grain faces. In both cases there would be a few isolated particles

MINE fires are usually extinguished by constructing seals in the approaches to the areas to exclude air from the fire areas, which smothers the fires in an oxygen-depleted atmosphere. Seals should be substantially constructed and made as nearly airtight as possible and should be provided with a sampling pipe so that samples of the atmospheres behind the seals may be collected at regular intervals. Methods of constructing seals and of sampling and analysing mine atmospheres are fully described in Bureau of Mines publications. (1, 2). Information obtained on the composition of atmospheres behind fire seals is helpful in determining if a fire has been extinguished or if there is any danger of an explosion when a fire area is being sealed or unsealed. The progress of a mine fire can best be determined by studying percentages of carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, and hydrogen in the atmosphere behind the seals. Hydrogen will be formed in a bituminous- or subbituminous-coal mine when the temperature exceeds 480° F. and in an anthracite mine when the temperature exceeds 660° F. (3). Carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide are both products of combustion of coal, wood, or other organic compounds. The presence of carbon monoxide has long been accepted as an indication of a mine fire. A sealed fire area should not be reopened until the carbon monoxide has disappeared. Trends in the percentage of carbon dioxide are also useful in determining the status of a mine fire. Carbon dioxide is sometimes liberated by rock strata. In this case, carbon dioxide in the atmosphere behind a seal will be from two sources-the rock strata and the fire. When the, fire is extinguished, carbon dioxide will be liberated from only I source, the rock strata, and when the percentages of carbon dioxide are plotted, the slope of the curve will not be as steep as when this gas was being liberated from 2 sources. If the only source is the fire, the percentages of carbon dioxide will gradually decrease after the fire has been extinguished. By studying analyses of a mine-fire atmosphere, it is possible to determine if the atmosphere is explosive; if the mixture is capable of becoming explosive when mixed with air; and if the mixture can be made nonexplosive or be prevented from becoming explosive by being mixed with an inert gas. These factors can be computed mathematically or determined graphically. The mathematical calculations advanced by Ash and Felegy (7) are discussed, and graphical solutions of their equations are presented. It is believed that the graphical solution will be extremely helpful in determining the characteristics of a mine-fire atmosphere when fighting a fire, because the results can be obtained in a matter of minutes, and there is less likelihood of an error being made under the stress incident to control efforts. The experimental and theoretical work upon which the formulas are based have been adequately described and are not discussed at this time (5) (6).

INTRODUCTION Solid-liquid separation is an important and many times a critical step (or steps) in a mineral or coal processing plant. Some examples of typical critical separations are as follows: 1. Operating a seven to eight stage CCD thickening circuit to re¬cover almost all of the caustic and alumina trihydrate values in an alumina plant. This must be accomplished with highly scaling slurries, starting temperatures of over 100°C and operate on a closed circuit system. 2. Making a filter step operate to produce a proper moisture for the balling step so that the pellet furnace can produce a proper product. Bentonite addition must be minimized and a good quality filtrate must be maintained to prevent abrasion of the internal parts of the filter. 3. Operating a closed water system in a coal washing plant so that reclaimed water containing less than one percent suspended solids is produced for reuse to maintain beneficiation ef¬ficiency. Refuse solids must also be thickened so that they can be effectively dewatered to meet state disposal requirements. 4. Recovering phosphoric acid values from a slurry containing gypsum and other gangue solids at an elevated temperature. This must be done while minimizing wash water and maximizing P2O5 re¬covery while simultaneously minimizing scale problems. While solid-liquid separations are important to overall performance in the processing plant flowsheet, it is also a significant factor in plant costs. Capital and operating costs for all the solid-liquid separation steps (includ¬ing water reclamation for reuse) in such plants are probably between 10 and 20%. Energy consumption can also be important in these separations. For example, in the copper concentrator, it is the third largest category in energy consumption, after comminution and flotation. Obviously, solid-liquid separation steps in a plant demand proper atten¬tion in design in order to achieve both optimum performance and cost. Simultaneously, knowledge of funda¬mentals are important to improve results in existing plants.

Because of the Chilean Ministry of Mining's interest in the development of industrial minerals, the Chilean Geological and Mining Service (Servicio Nacional de Geología y Minería, SERNAGEOMIN) has carried out a research program during the last two years to identify projects that represent interesting investment opportunities for small- to medium-scale operations in Chile. Most important of these projects are: (1) Quebrada Lluta aluminum sulphate, for drinking- and industrial-water treatment, with a potential domestic and foreign mar- ket of almost 43,000 tonnes per year and investments of about US$1.8 million; (2) Quebrada Lluta-Quebrada Cardones pumice, for abrasives, filters, fillers, and light- weight aggregates, with a potential market of about 30,000 tonnes per year, and in- vestments of US$2.0 million; (3) El Maule dolomite, for soil conditioner and iron smelting, with a total potential domestic market of some 60,000 tonnes per year, and estimated investments of US$2.0 million; (4) Las Escaleras bentonite, for animal feed, pelletising, and oil absorbents, with a potential market of almost 6,000 tonnes per year, and investments of about US$2.4 million; (5) Laraquete-Carampangue andalucite, for alumina refractories, with a future total domestic and foreign demand of about 15,000 tonnes per year, and estimated investments of US$2-2.5 million; (6) Rio Lía garnet, for fillers and sand-blasting abrasives, whose domestic market represents 10,000 tonnes per year, with investments of US$2.3 million; and (7) Munilque pumice, for building bricks and panels, with a potential domestic market of 250,000 tonnes per year, and investments of US$1.4 million. The development of these projects will represent an important increase and a significant diversification in Chilean industrial-minerals production.

"This work presents a comparative study of the thermo-mechanical and morphological properties of sugarcane bagasse fiber/HDPE composite treated with electron-beam and gamma radiation. The composite samples obtained by extrusion and injection molding processes were irradiated at 50 and 90 kGy using either a 1.5 MeV electron beam accelerator or gamma irradiator EMI-9, at room temperature in presence of air. The irradiated and non-irradiated samples were submitted to mechanical and MPI tests, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), sol-gel analysis and X-Rays Diffraction (XRD) and the correlation between their properties was discussed. Improvement of the bagasse fiber/HDPE composite properties, using electron-beam or gamma radiation, was found.IntroductionResidues of sugarcane bagasse fiber are widely produced in Latin America and other countries: in Southern Africa, Egypt, South-Eastern Asia, India, China, Australia, Cuba, among other producers, as by-products of the sugar and bioethanol industry. The sugarcane industry in Brazil and Uruguay is well established and expanding with large potential to increase the production of sugarcane bagasse in the next years [1-3]. Although the major portion of the bagasse is currently burnt for energy supply in the sugarcane industry, the disposal of this byproduct is still inefficient and, consequently, it is critical for agricu1ture profitability and environmental protection. Sugarcane bagasse is a lignocellu1ose fiber mainly constituted by around 46 % cellu1ose, containing hemicellu1ose, lignin, fat and waxes, silica and other elements [3, 4]. Studies have reported that sugarcane bagasse can be used to produce thermoplastic polymeric composites with excellent properties for many applications. [5-8]. Based on this survey, the transformation of bagasse into high quality industrial products, such as bagasse-polymer composites, can provide its more effective utilization."

"Acid leaching in agitated tanks is central to hydrometallurgical processing for valuable metals’ (e.g., copper, gold, nickel and cobalt) recovery from low grade (e.g., < 2 wt.%) ores. In this study, atmospheric leaching behaviour of Australian saprolitic nickel (Ni) laterite ore using sulfuric acid was investigated under isothermal, batch conditions at pH 1. The effect of primary process variables comprising time (4 h) and temperature (70 and 95 oC) on the leaching mechanisms and kinetics was established for -2 mm, low grade (~1 % Ni) saprolitic ore dispersions at 40 wt.% solid loading. Leaching proceeded incongruently, reflecting the proliferation of gangue minerals’ constituent elements (e.g., Mg, Al, Fe) alongside Ni and Co in the pregnant leach solutions (PLS). Subsequent analysis showed that 89% Ni and 78% Co were extracted after 4 h at 95 oC whilst at 70 oC the recoveries of these metals were markedly low (< 25 %). Overall, 177 and 644 kg H2SO4 /t dry ore were consumed at 70 and 95 oC, respectively. Activation energy of 79.0 ±1.0 kJ/mol was estimated for the mechanism of Ni and Co leaching and associated kinetics. Particles size analyses indicated that when the breakage of frail laterite particles due to shear is taken into consideration, differences in feed and leached product particle size distributions were insignificant , despite a remarkable increase in BET specific surface area of the product. Mineralogical analyses of the feed ore and leached solid products revealed a sub-crystalline silica phase enrichment of the latter. The overall results suggest that the mechanism of acid leaching of saprolitic Ni laterite may be described by a chemical reaction-controlled, shrinking core model."

Discussion of the paper of Herbert F.. Miller, Jr., presented at the New York meeting, February, 1913, and printed in Bulletin No. 75, March, 1913, pp. 409 to 413. HENRY D. HIBBARD, Plainfield, N. J.:-Looking at the illustrations, it seems to me that a furnace made with the width of port that is shown here would not be a good working furnace. The economy of brick and gas might be all right, but I do not think it would melt the steel properly. I should say that the flame would not spread out suitably to fill the whole hearth of the furnace, and there would be undue waste, and it seems to me that it would be an undesirable furnace to adopt. The question as to whether a producer-gas flame would lie down in the furnace, hugging the bottom better than the natural-gas flame, is settled, not so much by the specific gravity of the gases themselves, as by the relative temperatures at which they enter the laboratory of the furnace. We know in that case that producer gas would be lighter than a natural gas which had not been run through a regenerator and expanded four or five volumes in consequence. I would like to hear what Mr. Miller has to say about the action of the flame spreading properly over the charge to give good metallurgical results in the form of furnace which he presents.

HAVING previously shown you how ores are found and mined, and also how they are prepared and disposed for smelting, and then how the blast furnaces and other furnaces are made for purging their earthiness, all this would be as nothing if I did not proceed to show you the method of smelting them. Therefore, in the present chapter I wish to show you how you must proceed in this very important operation, telling you all I have seen and also how much work with this kind of blast furnace I have done or directed. For this reason I tell you first to take by weight or measure the quantity of ore that you wish to smelt and, particularly if it is a kind that contains silver, break it into small pieces about the size of [52v] beans. If the ore had previously needed evaporation by fire or cleaning by washing, you will have had this done well and have had it properly prepared by a master sorter or others. A layer of this is arranged on a bed of planks, bricks, or flat stones in front of the blast furnace and its companion is placed on top, then a quarter part of galena or a third if you can obtain it. Then an equal part of crushed iron slag or slag from the same or different ore is added. These materials are spread in layers one above the other. When the blast furnace has been constructed as taught above, correct in all its parts, and is full of well-kindled burning charcoal, then fill it up with charcoal and admit water to the bellows machine. When you see that it is well kindled again from this wind and that the flames begin to come out forcefully on top, work it down with a little rake and fill it up again. Then the pannier is filled with new charcoal, the blast furnace heaped full, and another basketful of the said composition of ore is also put on top. Proceed in this way, continually adding charcoal and ore as long as you have any, or as long as you wish to keep up the work, maintaining the blast furnace always full, or continuing in this way until the bottom of the blast furnace is filled with melted materials. Decide this by judgment, or by seeing through the mouth of the tuyère where the wind of the bellows enters that they are level with this. Then with an iron tool open the hole that was left as an outlet in front of the blast furnace and allow all the metal with its slag to run out. These two things, flowing through the chan-

EARLY in 1942 National Lead Co. was requested by the War Production Board to construct and operate a plant for the Government to produce magnesium by the ferrosilicon process which had been developed by Dr. L. M. Pidgeon in the laboratories of the Canadian National Research Council. A contract with the Defense Plant Corporation was concluded in May 1942 and Magnesium Reduction Co., a wholly owned subsidiary of National Lead Co., was formed to carry out this project. The capacity of the plant was rated at 10,000,000 lb. of magnesium per year, equivalent to an average production of about 14 tons per day. THE PROCESS The process, in brief, is as follows: The raw materials are dolomite and ferrosilicon, 75 per cent grade. The dolomite is calcined, the calcine and ferrosilicon are ground and mixed and the mixture is briquetted. The briquets are charged into tubular retorts of chrome-nickel steel set horizontally in a furnace with the open ends projecting outside the front wall. The retorts are then closed and evacuated. Magnesium is liberated according to the reaction 2(MgO, CaO) + Si = 2Mg + 2CaO, SiO2 It is distilled from the charge and condensed on a removable sleeve in the throat of the retort. Sodium and potassium, if present, are also liberated, distilled and condensed on a "sodium condenser" in the end of the retort. At the expiration of the distillation period the retorts are discharged and the cycle of operations is repeated. For the rated daily capacity of ±. tons of magnesium there are required approximately 170 tons of dolomite, equivalent to about 85 tons of calcine, and 16.5 tons of ferrosilicon. The retort residue, a bulky powder which at present is waste, amounts to about 87 tons. CHOOSING THE SITE The investigation to select the location of the plant was conducted by the Research Laboratories of National Lead Co. This work included geologic and economic surveys of a number of districts, examination of dolomite samples by chemical, spectrographic and petrographic methods and large-scale tests of dolomite from several of the more promising localities. In the last-named tests 2-ton samples were put through the ferrosilicon process in the pilot plant of the Canadian National Research Council, under the guidance of Dr. Pidgeon. The conclusions drawn from the investigation, in regard to the quality of dolomite to be used in the ferrosilicon process, were: First, the dolomite should contain not less than 21 per cent MgO

Y. Luo and S.S. Peng are to be congratulated for their outstanding paper providing new results from surface subsidence monitoring over longwall panels under different conditions. This writer found the authors&apos; paper very interesting. In reference to this paper, the following contributions are offered: • In the paper, the maximum possible subsidence (?Smax) induced by chain pillar convergence has been related to a parameter (h/I -p) by linear regression. (Notations are expressed in this discussion&apos;s Fig. I (b).) It is a well-known fact that in a goaf the roof lowers onto broken material that gradually compacts. Then the physical behavior of goaf may closely follow the compaction characteristics of broken materials. In light of this assumption, a mathematical means (Fig. 1(a)) of defining the expected compaction (i.e. surface subsidence) represents an exponential expression between ?Smax/m vs. h/1-p. This is based on Luo and Peng&apos;s field observations from the Appalachian, Illinois and Alabama coal fields. (The coefficient of regression "r" under consideration was computed to be 0.883). • According to Wardell&apos;s (1969) findings for board and pillar mining, the maximum possible subsidence can be expressed in terms of maximum pillar loading (depth, ratio of extraction) and the height-to-width ratio of the pillars left. Using Luo and Peng&apos;s 1991 results, this writer discovered a regression equation between the above-mentioned factors. As displayed in Fig. 1(b), the functional expression approximates as closely as possible the observed subsidence data.

A new experimental technique has been developed to study nucleation behavior in eutectic alloys. It is somewhat similar to that applied by Sundquist and Mondolfo1 but with the advantages that: 1) bulk samples are undercooled instead of small droplets thus allowing the thermal behavior to be monitored by a thermocouple immersed in the sample, and 2) nucleation behavior is investigated in the same sample on either side of the eutectic composition by adding additional component to the sample under controlled conditions which preclude the addition of nu-cleation contaminants. Sundquist and Mondolfo carried out ]nucleation ex-periments on a large number of eutectic alloy sys-tems and concluded that nonreciprocal nucleation operated. If one phase a was a good nucleant for the other phase 0, then B was a poor nucleant for a. This was determined experinlentally by comparing the nucleation temperatures of 100 to 300 u diameter droplets of hypereutectic and hypoeutectic composition cooled from above the liquidus and from a temperature between the liquidus and the eutectic temperature. Primary phase a was concluded to be an efficient nucleant for the other phase B, if the following experimental result was obtained. Referring to Fig. 1, the temperature TI at which a drop of hypereutectic alloy of composition B froze when cooled from above the B liquidus was noted. This was the nucleation temperature for B in the absence of a. A drop of hypoeutectic alloy of composition A was then frozen from temperature T2 between the a liquidus and the eutectic temperature. The temperature T3 at which the eutectic nucleated in the presence of the primary or proeutec-tic a was noted. If this temperature T3 was higher than the temperature TI at which the B nucleated in a hypereutectic alloy, it was concluded that the primary a had nucleated the 6. This temperature T3, representing a certain undercooling below the equilibrium eutectic temperature Te , was designated ?TB by a> the undercooling below T, for nucleation of 13 by a. If there was no substantial difference in nucleation temperature between the hypereutectic drop cooled from above the /3 liquidus and the hypo-eutectic drop cooled from a temperature between the a liquidus and the eutectic temperature, it was considered that the a nucleated B at an undercooling equal to or greater than that at which P nucleated from a hypereutectic alloy. Sundquist and Mondolfo1 found that faceted primary crystals were good nucle-ants for metals that grow as orthogonal dendrites when present as the primary phase. Jackson2 has questioned Sundquist and Mondolfo&apos;s technique and proposed that in Sundquist and Mon-dolfo&apos;s samples, such as composition A, primary a retained B in reentrant grooves at their surfaces when heated to a temperature above the eutectic but below the a liquidus. Estimating the risk of lung cancers for workers in uranium mines and defining the resulting dose equivalent limits have been made possible thanks to work carried out in two scientific fields : physics and epidemiology. Theoretical calculations on the basis of physical models for the former and epidemiological surveys on the mortality of uranium miners from lung cancer for the latter. However, even though considerable work has been done in these two areas, the results obtained still remain controversial on several points. The radioactive and physical instability of the aerosols present in the atmosphere of the mines and the biological complexity of the human lung which even the most sophisticated physical models can reproduce only very schematically have often proved to be insurmountable difficulties for physicists, explaining the uncertainties which subsist concerning the dose delivered to the various parts of the respiratory tract from the air breathed by miners during their work. Epidemiological investigations on the other hand, in spite of the high quality of the surveys carried out, remain open to criticism, essentially because of the very approximative estimation of the individual occupational exposure to radon daughters. This is due to the fact that uncertainties arise from the measurement of radon gas if the state of equilibrium with the daughters is not accurately known or, if the active deposit is measured, to the fact that these measurements are insufficient in number. The controversies and discrepancies which subsist with regard to the evaluation of the level of risk, and in particular for low doses, can thus be understood. In addition, epidemiological surveys cannot dissociate the carcinogenic action of radon from the synergistic or potentiating actions of tabacco and of other pollutants present in uranium mine air. Animal experiments have been largely taken into account for evaluating the toxicity of various radionuclides. This type of experiment is necessary when human data do not exist and has provided us with much information. For instance, the relative biological effectiveness of the various types of radiation, the metabolism of radionuclides and the mechanisms of cancer induction have been approached and satisfactorily resolved in this way. Concerning radon and its daughters, however, animal experiments have been used very little even though it seems apparent that they should complement epidemiological studies. For instance, whereas doubt can be cast on the data obtained from human epidemiology because of the uncertainty concerning the individual exposure of miners, those drawn from experiments are indisputable because in this case the dose is as perfectly known as the effect. In addition, the effects of radon can experimentally be appreciated separately whereas in the surveys, they cannot be dissociated from the effects of the other pollutants in the mine. Finally, there are no other means of dealing with the mechanisms of cancer induction. In order to gain any useful knowledge from this method however, the experimental model must necessarily present certain methodological guarantees and the effects seen in the animals must enable a comparison with those which appear in man. For this reason we will present here the animal model we have been using for 15 years, and will give the results obtained and compare them with human data and made a synthesis. Finally the conclusions which can be drawn will be discussed as well as their limitations with respect to the protection of uranium miners. I - MATERIAL AND METHODS Male SPF Sprague-Dawley rats were used. At the onset of the inhalations they were around 3 months old. Their small size makes it possible to expose a large number of animals at the same time. Their life-span is long enough to be able to follow the evolution of the cancers and to estimate the latency time. Finally, they present the advantage of having a very low rate of spontaneous lung cancers (SANDERS, 1979). I.1 - Three inhalation techniques were used. 1.1.1. – [Inhalation of radon decay products.] The inhalation apparatus has been described previously (CHAMEAUD et al. 1971). The first experiments utilized a room of a half cubic meter linked to a source made up of high grade uranium ore. Later on, a large installation was built with a 10 m3 inhalation chamber making it possible to expose up to 500 rats at one time at radon concentrations ranging from 100 to 10 000 WL for variable lengths of time (1 to 10 hours per day). These concentrations are higher than those to which the miners are generally exposed, but in order for the cumulated doses in man and in animal to be similar and delivered for the same fraction of their respective life-spans, the ratio of the concentrations should be approximately that of the life-spans. The concentrations of radon and its daughters during the experiments were carefully controlled thanks to multiple samplings of radon gas associated with measurements of radon decay products. Six active Kermadec Arc submarine volcanoes located between 34°S and 36°30?S were mapped and sampled by an interdisciplinary inter-institutional research team between April and July 2005 using submersibles Pisces V and Pisces IV aboard the mother ship the RV Kai?mikai-O-Kanaloa. The purpose of the expedition was to study the relationship between hydrothermal activity, formation of hydrothermal mineral deposits and the biodiversity of life associated with the hydrothermal vents. Of the volcanoes examined, all showed evidence of hydrothermal activity, plume production and helium anomalies. Only two of the volcanoes, namely Brothers and Clark, showed chimneys and surficial poly-metallic sulphide deposition. Hydrothermal venting at a water depth of 1700 meters within the base of the northern wall of the summit caldera of Brothers Volcano has produced a field of chimneys, some of them 5 metres high with black smokers venting. Temperatures of 300°C were measured within the active vents. Clark Volcano has a double cone summit at a water depth of 875 metres. The shallowest cone has a near-summit hydrothermal vent field with 5-meter high venting chimneys and smaller structures around the periphery. Water temperatures of 200°C. Geochemical and petrological analysis of the massive poly-metallic sulphide samples taken from Brothers and Clark show a diversity of mineralogy. This diversity is clearly a function of hydrothermal water temperature. Chimneys sampled from Brothers are pyrite and sphalerite dominant with lesser chalcopyrite. Sulphides from Clark Volcano tend to be barite rich with lesser sphalerite and pyrite. Sulphides from Brothers Volcano have a range in gold composition of 4 to 58 ppb with silver composition of up to 38 ppb. A mineral formation model for the volcanoes suggests hydrothermal fluid boiling within the volcanic edifice for those volcanoes with shallow summits and massive sulphide deposition with the edifice as well. Surficial deposits include native sulphur and lower temperature oxides. Only the deeper water Brothers Volcano shows massive sulphide deposition along the marginal faults of the caldera floor.

This case study focuses on analysis of sounds inside a house induced by blasts as result of surface mining coal in West Virginia and how to better communicate technical information to the public. The field study included a house wide vibration and sound monitoring system installed in a home which was subjected to blasts at varied distances and direction. The structure response was separated into ground vibration and airblast induced movement due to the differences in their times of arrival. This signal was then compared to the sounds recorded to determine which component of blast (ground vibration or airblast) induced the maximum sound. Findings shows that blasts at distances less than 762 meters (2,500 feet) had maximum sound responses from both ground vibration and airblast. While for blasts beyond this distance the maximum sound response was caused by ground vibration without exception. The kitchen generally created the most sound. The second phase of the study was to gauge the public’s response or preference to technical information. Three hundred and forty eight (348) telephone surveys were conducted in Logan and Boone counties West Virginia. Based on the survey, the public prefers units of pounds per square inch (psi) for airblast and millimeters of displacement for ground vibration. Ultimately a public relations plan was developed based on the results.
