As sponge iron is much like porous, coarse sand, it is a tempting material to use in place of coarse scrap iron as a precipitant of metals, for scrap iron is relatively awkward to handle and exposes only a small amount of surface to pregnant solutions. The results of the experiments described in this bulletin are largely a record of the behavior of sponge iron as a precipitant of lead and copper under laboratory conditions comparable to those that would obtain in a commercial plant were it attempted to secure the maximum contact of surface between solution and precipitant. Physically, the study is largely one of the rates of diffusion of the metal ions in the solutions and through the metallic coatings surrounding the sponge iron particles. The practical objectives are to remove completely the valuable metals from solution and at the same time to obtain a precipitate of good grade. In order to fulfill this latter requirement, the precipitant should be almost completely consumed. These practical ends are usually secured by having the two substances involved pass each other counter-currently-that is, in such a manner as to have the strongest precipitant in contact with the most impoverished solution, and vice versa. EXPERIMENTS WITH LEAD SOLUTIONS In nearly all of the schemes involving the leaching of lead from its ores the metal has been put into solution as the chloride, and fairly concentrated liquors have been employed. The solubility of lead under such conditions is comparatively small at best; the hot pregnant liquors from which the metal is to be precipitated are then made nearly saturated with respect to lead, and only a very small amount of acid is used. Therefore it was not as necessary to learn the behavior of the sponge iron in precipitating lead from solutions of widely differing composition as to learn under what conditions, and with what mechanisms, this precipitation might be carried out most readily.

Since 2013, GSR has undertaken 4 exploration campaigns, which focused on environmental baseline monitoring (marine biology), resource definition and technological change. The seabed nodule collection vehicle has a significant influence on the achievable production rate and is for that reason thought to be a serious risk in developing an economical viable mining operation. GSR is currently working on a pre-prototype of a seabed nodule collection vehicle. The program, called ProCat, started in 2015 and will take up to end of 2019. ProCat can be split up in 2 phases: ‐ ProCat#1 [2015 – Q2 2017]: separate parallel testing of the nodule collection- and driving mechanism (Tracked Soil Testing Device Patania I – TSTD Patania I). The trafficability was tested in-situ; the collection mechanism was tested in a laboratory. Phase 1 has been completed successfully in September 2017. ‐ ProCat#2 [Q3 2017 – end of 2019]: the knowledge acquired during the first phase was used in this 2nd phase. Both collection mechanism and driving mechanism were integrated into the design of a pre-prototype seabed nodule collection vehicle (Pre-Prototype Vehicle Patania II – PPV Patania II). This pre-prototype vehicle will be used for a simulated mining test in Q2 of 2019 in the GSR- and BGR license area. The main objective of the ProCat research program, and especially the 2nd phase, is to integrate the nodule collector on the tracked chassis and develop an operating vehicle causing minimal environmental impact hereby validating the requirements for a full scale polymetallic nodule collection vehicle in the actual operational environment of the CCFZ. Following the ProCat project, GSR is working towards a system-integrated mining test once exploitation regulations have been agreed by the ISA and its member States.

Tectonic stress is an important parameter for understanding the dynamics of underground engineering and for the exploitation of coalbed methane. Multiple-period structural features usually have complex spatial relationships in tectonic superposition areas, which provides evidence for identification of the sequence of the tectonic stress period. Conjugated joints and slickensides are used to reconstruct the tectonic stress of the No. 8 Mine in Pingdingshan. Based on the geological unit division and field measurements, data on hundreds of joints and slickensides are collected from 33 stations. The tectonic stress results indicated by the conjugated joints show that there are mainly four directions of tectonic stress: NEE-SWW, NW-SE, NE-SW, and NNESSW. The tectonic stress results of the slickensides indicate that there are mainly four directions of tectonic stress: NNE-SSW, NNW-SSE, NEE-SWW, and NW-SE. According to the systematic analysis of the joints and slickensides, this paper separates the superposed joint and slickenside sets and identifies the tectonic stress periods with their abutting relationships. Three tectonic stress periods are determined and the sequence of the tectonic stress periods is NE-SW, NW-SE, and NEE-SWW. The results are consistent with other tectonic stress measurements for both the region and the locality.

The immense commercial value of the Gayley dry-blast process has been established beyond controversy. The testimony of practical blast-furnace managers, on both sides of the Atlantic, agrees that it reduces the cost of pig-iron about $1 per ton; but from the same testimony it appears that this direct economy does not by any means cover its commercial advantages—in fact, that under conditions frequently encountered in practice, it presents other benefits of even greater immediate financial importance. To this point I shall recur in a later part of the present paper. The history of the reception given to this invention, especially on the other side of the Atlantic, has repeated an experience familiar to American engineers. First, the reports of our practice were rejected as theoretically impossible, according to generally accepted notions and formulas; then the figures were reluctantly accepted; and finally the attempt has been made to explain how they could have been obtained. As to the Gayley dry blast, me Americans have been for several years in the last stage of the discussion, and the rest of the professional world is rapidly coming to it. Meanwhile, the remark has been repeatedly made that, whatever Mr. Gayley's process may turn out to be worth, it was not an invention on his part, but simply the energetic and persevering execution of a procedure already proposed by others. This question I wish to discuss first in the present paper. I. What Did Mr. Gayley Invent? Realizing that this is not the place for detailed argument on an issue of patent law, I shall not undertake to quote and criticise the publications prior to Mr. Gayley'a first patents. "The most cost-effective method of placement of the high strength fill used in the Cannon Mine' s overhand cut-and-f ill bench stopes was determined to be truck haulage. Constraint s imposed by the mine layout dictated the use of a truck which could dump its load in a fifteen-foot high drift. The Dux Teledumper truck was selected as the most suitable unit for this application based upon operational and maintenance parameters which included a telescoping, tilting dump box; large load capacity; and robust construction. Development of the truck continues through the cooperation between the manufacturer and user. INTRODUCTIONThe Cannon Mine is situated in the centre of Washington state, approximately midway between the cities of Spokane on the east and Seattle on the west. The mine complex is located three block s south of the Wenatchee city limits at the eastern base of the Cascade Mountain range.Asam era Minerals (U.S.) Inc., with 5I% ownership, operates the Cannon Mine. Breakwater Resources, Ltd. holds the remaining 49%.Annual paroduction is 520 000 tons per year, presently on a 21-shift per week operating schedule for both the mine and the mill.All production is presently won by overhand bench stoping with backfill. Stoping starts with 15-ft high by 24- or 30-ft wide sill cuts driven above and below a stope block . A drop rai se and slot are used to open a bench which is then slabbed toward the open slot. Truck-placed backfill is dumped into the mined - out stope from the upper sill cut. This stoping sequence is repeated until the top of the ore block is reached . The top sill cut is then tightly filled with backfill to minimize subsidence and to provide adequate roof support during extraction of the pillars.Mining equipment consists of hydraulic drills and rubber-tired, diesel scoops and trucks."

Beads of metal frequently appear at the ends of cast-copper wire bars and on the sides of wedge cakes near the top. These are richer in cuprous-oxide than the rest of the casting. A micrographical study of these exudations has been made. 11 is suggested that the materical is forced through the surface while the copper is solidifying. If not eliminated in process of manufacture, it shows on the finished polished sheet copper in patches differing in color from the main body of the shad. Figures 1 to 4 show the copper exudations, at different magnifications, as they appear on the ends of cast wire bars, and on the sides, usually near the top, of wedge cakes. Sometimes the exudations are in fine "drops;" at other times, large masses of the material are found. Microscopic examination of the copper exudation indicates that it is high in oxide and of eutectic proportions. Because of the difficulty of securing a suitable sample, the protuberances have not been analyzed chemically; but the spectroscope shows no indication that there are any more metallic impurities present than in the balance of the copper. The lowest copper plus silver content of the coppers studied for this paper was 99.914 per cent.; the highest, 99.966 per cent.; so the oxygen content of the whole casting would be well under 0.07 per cent. Structure of Protuberances The segregation of oxide between grains in the interior of the cast bar, not far from the "set," is shown in Figs. 5 and 6. In general, the amount of cuprous oxide begins to increase at a point about 0.01 in. below the normal surface of the casting, i. e., the base of the drop; but it does not attain maximum concentration in the main body of the metal. Vertical sections, Figs. 7 to 12, show that there is a definite line of large cuprous-oxide globules at the base of the drops. Since the end of World War 11 interest has been increasing in the use of shaped charges in the mining industry and in other industries using explosives for blasting purposes. Shaped charges employ the principle known as the "Munroe effect," which was discovered by Charles E. Munroe more than 50 years ago (in 1888). Details of their design have been explained elsewhere.1,2,3 Fig I shows the essential features of design of two types of shaped charges (with conical and hemispherical cavities) and a schematic sketch of their action upon detonation. The following discussion deals with the behavior of the metal in the cavity liners when they are subjected to intense Pressures exerted when the explosive charge is detonated. Among the conclusions reached in research on shaped explosive charges, the following have been established conceming cavity liners:1'2 I. The optimum wall thickness of a conical cavity liner is dependent upon the apex angle of the cone as well as On the base diameter of the charge. Acute apex angles require thinner walls for optimum perfonnance and more obtuse angles require thicker walls for the same base diameter. '. Cones were more effective in forming a penetrating jet when the walls were tapered; that is, the thickness of the wall of the cone increased from the apex down. 3. The physical and mechanical properties of metals have a marked effect upon their performance as cavity-liner material. Boiling point, ductility, malleability, ten-sile strength, and hardness are among the properties that influence the effectiveness of a metal used as a cavity liner. Lead, for example, makes a wide, flat crater in steel plates. Aluminum makes a deeper crater than lead, and an aluminum alloy having a high tensile strength makes a deeper hole, but slightly smaller in diameter. Cast iron makes a deep, narrow hole. These findings, together with the following analysis under Metallographic Survey of slug, offer solutions to many of the problems involved in solving the mechanism of the formation of Munroe jets. It has been fairly well established that cavity liners collapse in a manner similar to that indicated in Fig 2, Conical liners are known to collapse upon themselves while hemispherical liners are believed to turn inside out in the process of jet formation. The first has been definitely proved by recovery of collapsed portions of cones, while liners from partly detonated charges show that hemispheres may turn inside out. Fig 3 shows a sketch of a recovered slug from a 6-in. shaped charge using a 45" cone made of cast iron. (This size of charge drilled holes up to 3 ft in depth in solid granodiorite.)

Although they have long been the subject of discussion by metallurgists their nature is still uncertain and the names that have been applied: to them, such as deformation line4 or strain markinas, indicate this uncertainky. In this paper which repotts the results of a furthcr investigatinn of their nature, they will be called strain mxrkings. Introduction Mathewson and Phillips1 described strain markinps in 1 916 and concluded that they appear only after 20 pet deformation. They objected to the markings being called slip tines believing this term should be sewrved for surface markings protluced by plastic deformntion. In 1921. vogel² described similar striations which appeared after polishing and etching the roughly ground surface of numerous alloys. He reported that the markings were crystallo-graphic in nature, and since they resemble Seumann hands in iron, at least superficially, he assumed them to be mechanical twins. In 1928, Matherwson reported work by Phillips which indicated that the lines were more readily produced by impact than by slow deformation and that in many cases the twins inside recrystallized grains were parallel to strain markings in the original deformed grains. This was taken as cvirlence that the markings coalesce into anncaling twins. and hence that they themselves are mechanical twins. Many attempts have been made to demonstrate directly that the markings are mechanical twins. In 1934, Samans described the results of X ray studies of two defomed crystals of alpha brass. Evidence was obtained which could be interpreted to indicate that the strain markings arc mechanical twins, and this remains the only direct evidence to this effect. Several other attempts to obtain similar evidence by X ray diffraction have failed5.8.7 although in no Ease was the original method of Samans employed. An

DURING the year just ended we have had three great fires in the mines in the Wilkes-Barre district. One at the Empire Colliery, one at the Prospect shaft, and the other at the Baltimore old mine. It is proposed in this paper to give a brief history of the fire at the Empire Colliery, and the methods employed in extinguishing it. The fire was first discovered breaking out in the air-stack, alongside what is known as the " Kidder Plane," about one o'clock on the morning of December 31st, 1873. Subsequently it was ascertained that the fire originated in the return airway somewhere near the steam boiler, located inside the mine, near the head of No. 5 slope. The coal from this slope was hoisted to the shaft gangway, at a point nearly four thousand feet distant from the foot of the shaft. As there were from four to five hundred mine cars hoisted per day from this slope the steam boilers were located at this place. The mines being of considerable extent required a large volume of pure air for ventilation, and no fan having been erected at this slope at the time, the heat from the boiler was made use of to assist ventilation, by conveying the return air from No. 5 slope into the large airway made from these boilers to the surface through the old "Kidder slope" to the stack where the fire was first discovered. The length of this slope or airway was about one thousand feet, with a sectional area of about sixty feet. In the marbel industry, ore reserves refer to the produced tonnage of orthogonal prismatic, defect-free blocks of commercial sizes and of marketable aesthetical quality. On the contrary, in the mining sector, ore reserves refer to the tonnage of ore with grade above some cut-off value. While in the mining sector ore reserves are reported according to existing standard guidelines, the marble industry has no standardmethod. The purpose of this paper is to present a method to estimate white marble reserves using drill coring or borehole wall logging and limited joint mapping on exposed marble surfaces. Data pertaining to fracture orientation, fracture frequency, size, and whiteness were collected. The primary phase of marble characterization is followed by the discretization of the orebody into a three-dimensional array of orthogonal prismatic blocks, where the marble whiteness and fracture intensity are attribute values. Both these variables are considered to obey continuous and not discrete probability distributions. The discretization is performed using computer aided design and the Block Kriging techniques. An outline to improve the description of a given marble ore deposit at the exploration stage is presented for the prediction of marble block size distribution from joint count measurements along diamond drill cores. An example case of a white dolomitic marble quarry is used to demonstrate these methods.

"This paper describes an improved formulation of an analytical shear strength model developed by Haque & Kodikara (2012) by incorporating the failure of regular concrete/rock joints subjected to CNS condition. Sokolovskii’s analytical solutions developed for failure stress of slopes have been found to be effective in this regard. The analytical models have been validated for predicting the shear behaviour of concrete/rock joints subjected to various CNS loading conditions. The model has been found to accurately predict the dilation, normal stress and shear stress behaviour for a regular triangular saw-tooth joint up to the peak shear stress. Moreover, the peak shear stresses of concrete-rock joints with asperity angles ranging from 5 to 27.5o compared reasonably well with the available laboratory test results.INTRODUCTIONA new shear strength model for elastic regular triangular concrete/rock joints loaded under Constant Normal Stiffness (CNS) boundary condition has been developed by Haque & Kodikara (2012). The salient feature of this model is its capability of accurately estimating the normal and shear stresses of joints with shear displacements under CNS condition by incorporating the elastic deformation of asperities. However, the shear strength model of Haque & Kodikara (2012) for the elastic asperities cannot be directly employed to predict the peak shear stress of a joint experiencing plasticity under applied loads. Therefore, the model inevitability requires articulation of an appropriate shear failure criterion simulating the boundary conditions of the loaded asperity to predict the peak shear stress and corresponding normal stress and dilation behaviour of concrete/rock joints. Sokolovskii (1960) developed a set of analytical solutions for failure stress of slopes comprising c-??soils, which can be exploited effectively to simulate the failure condition as encountered for loaded regular triangular concrete/rock joints (Seidel & Haberfield, 2002)."

INTRODUCTION The El Teniente Mine of Codelco-Chi le has extracted 588 mil lion tons of ore in its 77 year history for a total copper output of 8.800.000 tons. The mine production has been obtained mainly by traditional block-caving where grizzlemen using a hand held lever send ore through long-raises to load trains. At present the mine is about to introduce mechanized block-caving using LHD equipment to extract the primary rock. This paper describes this method which will be tested starting next month by caving an 11.000 square meter block. THE PRIMARY ROCK PROBLEM The secondary enrichment sulfides of the El Teniente ore body have characteristics which makes a standard unmechanized block-caving practice very successful. In the 60's parts of blocks encountered primary ow in the Teniente 1 and Sub-13 levels which proved to be extremely hard to extract. These foretold the obstacles that arised in the central part of the Teniente 4 level. Preparation of a completely primary 8.100 square meter block started in 1970. Its undercutting was completed by the end of 1972 and by 1973 the problem of mining the primary rock was clearly visualized. The numbers below describe the difficulties in mining this block: -Long-hole drilling rate is 90 m (270 ft) per shift in secondary rock and 37 m (110 ft) in primary. - Undercutting which is completed in 9 shifts in secondary took 180 shifts in the primary block. - Average grizzlymen productivity in secondary is 250 tons per shift while in primary it is only 25-30 tons, both at 343 mm (13 1/2 in. ) grizzly opening. - Powder consumption for secondary blasting increased from 8 grams per ton in secondary to 84 in primary. - The protection pillar between the under- cutting and the production levels was 60% broken in primary while 20% is usual for secondary. - Extraction advanced 5 cm per day in primary while a 50 cm per day rate is the aver- age in secondary. This is the main reason that after 8 years this primary block has a 20% extraction. Secondary blocks take 1.5 to 3 years to complete their extraction. - 80% of the boulders in primary rock are larger than 343 m (13 1/2 in.) with 10-20 % of them larger than 3 meters. -Direct cost of production (preparation, undercutting, extraction and haulage), using the traditional block-caving design for secondary rock, increased 3.5 to 4 times when used in primary rock. The following indicators of Table 1 show the rock characteristics differences.

"A major geomechanical study was conducted for one of the UAE onshore oil fields with the purpose of studying reservoir rock properties and stress distribution, based on which a 3D coupled reservoir geomechanical model was built. This model was later used for wellbore stability analysis and for analyzing the effect of fractures on future reservoir production performance, including fracture deformation and permeability evolution occurring due to reservoir depletion and resulting changes in local stress field. The subject of this study was a complex fractured Upper Cretaceous carbonate reservoir characterized by high degree of heterogeneity, both vertically and laterally. Wellbore instability related drilling problems were encountered while drilling the wells in this field. The problems were mainly in drilling the horizontal wells, including breakouts and mud losses. Experimental results of laboratory tests used in this study are summarized in Part I of this paper whereas wellbore stability analysis and formulation of a3D geomechanical model that was built for that purpose is summarized herein.A 3D geomechanical reservoir model was developed, which included natural fractures. The mechanical properties of the reservoir rock, such as Young’s modulus, Poisson’s ratio, UCS, friction angle and tensile strength were populated based on the correlations established in Part I of this paper and the developed model was then used to simulate the 3D mechanical-property distribution and the evolution of the in situ stresses in the field due to depletion from 1983 to present-day. Based on the full field model, mud weight cubes were developed to predict the safe mud weight windows in different drilling directions. In addition, well stability prediction for two planned wells was performed using a 3D near-borehole model. Firstly, the computed stress state and mechanical properties simulated in the full field model were extracted along the well trajectory of an existing horizontal well which was drilled recently and then, a3D near-borehole model was constructed along the well trajectory. The wellbore stability analysis along the well trajectory, including stress state, strain distribution and displacements, was performed to identify the instability events along the well trajectory. It has been seen that the presence of natural fractures is closely related to the recorded borehole instability incidents. The computed plastic strains which indicate the wellbore failure were consistent with the recorded wellbore instability events in the FMI image logs, what provide further verification of the developed model. Then, this 3D near-borehole model was applied to two planned horizontal wells and the wellbore stability analysis for the two wells was carried out.The results showed that drilling vertically in the reservoir is safer than drilling horizontally. However, the drilling mud weight window in the vertical direction is narrow, being as narrow as 18.7 pcf or 0.299 sg locally. Drilling horizontally is less stable towards the maximum far field stress direction than towards the minimum far field stress direction. The mud weight cubes were used to identify the optimal well placement and well trajectory. For planned well trajectories, this technology can also be used to determine the optimal mud weight."

Explosives are probably the most widely used and most mysterious large scale' mining tools of modern times. The post black powder explosives were primarily nitroglycerin-based straight dynamites, ammonia dynamites, blasting gelatin, gelatin dynamites, ammonia gelatin dynamites, etc. Of these, the strongest and highest velocity explosive used in industrial operations is blasting gelatin, which is nitroglycerin colloided with a nitrocellulose of medium nitrogen content in proportions which give the product a plastic character, or about 93 to 7. Many variations of the basic groups above were developed by substituting ammonium nitrate and/or sodium nitrate for some of the nitroglycerin. The nitrates being insensitive to caps required a certain percentage of nitroglycerin to sustain detonation in smaller quantities or diameters. Paralleling the development of industrial dynamites was the development of more expensive, highly sophisticated explosives which were developed for specific military purposes. Such explosives as Amatol, RDX, Composition A, Composition B, Composition C, Lead Azide, PETN (Pentaerythritol Tetranitrate), Tetryl, Pentolite, TNT, etc., were primarily military explosives. Amatol, which is a cast mixture of ammonium nitrate and TNT (Trinitrotoluene), and identified by percentage of AN versus TNT as 50-50 Amatol, 80-20 Amatol, etc., was a favorite World War I explosive. RDX, or Cyclonite, was widely used in World War II. Also used during WW II were compositions A. B, and C, which were mixtures of RDX (Cyclotrimethylene trinitramine), TNT, and other nitrotoluenes. These high explosives, along with nitroglycerine, are exact chemical compositions or mixtures of exact chemical compositions which are individually explosive, or in other words, individually capable of explosive chemical decomposition when properly initiated. These chemical decompositions result in the formation of simpler compounds and/or large quantities of common combustion gases, and large amounts of energy in the form of heat. Of these, the most powerful is RDX which, based on the ballistic mortor test, is 1.5 times as powerful as TNT. Chemically, the decomposition of TNT releases about as much energy as the reaction of ammonium nitrate and fuel oil.

Gold mining is a subject that not only appeals to the popular imagination but has vital importance to the world's economic structure. However, a discussion of the use of gold as a medium of exchange, and a basis for credit between nations and for monetary systems is not within the scope of this paper. The importance of gold in carrying on the commerce of the world, the present supply and rate of production, the probable trend of future production, the probable future requirements, and related subjects have recently received much attention from bankers and economists, and many articles on these subjects have been published. During slack periods of base-metal production due to falling prices, accompanied by scaling down of base-metal mining operations and often by the closing down of at least some mines, there usually result revival of interest in gold mining, search for previously undiscovered deposits, and reopening of some old gold mines.

B. F. TiLLson*— The manifold difficulties of accurate anemometry in irregular sections of mine passageways, the irregular distributions of velocities in cross sections of the same, and the disturbing influence of the observer upon the air flow, all indicate an undesirable inaccuracy of results obtainable by any standardized method of traversing the section by an anemometer. It seems obvious that another, and simpler, method should be used to determine the volume of air flow in mine passages, namely: 1. At appropriate locations cement or calked framework rings should be installed permanently to equalize the irregularities of sectional contour and provide a place and means of attachment for a temporary cloth brattice which bears a rigid orifice. 2. The measurement of the velocity of air flow through the orifice may then be by anemometer or, preferably, by Pitot tube measurements of the differential pressures on both sides of the orifice in accordance with the standard practices available in engineering 1iterature. † The constants may be determined for various measuring positions in relation to the resulting "vena contracta." 3. The position of the person who makes the measurements is behind the brattice out of the air stream. The Pitot tube does not offer as disturbing an obstruction as the anemometer. A recording gauge may be employed to integrate fluctuations in air flow through that portion of the mine. No traverses are required because the reading may be at a single central point. An anemometer can be used with an orifice flow. The orifice will increase the air velocity at the measuring point, with correspondingly more accurate measurements where the normal air velocity through the passageway is low. Portable brattices might be devised with the cushioning rims which would seal against irregular rock surfaces where permanent rings were not available or feasible. The development by the Ventilation Committee of standard procedures and devices for the orifice measurement of the flow of mine ventilating air might be a desirable project for this coming year. C. M. Smith (author's reply)—Thank you for your discussion of my paper on underground anemometry. Your suggested method of measuring underground air flow is a novel one which might be applicable in some situations. It should be tested along with other suggested methods in any investigation of this subject. G. E. McElroy*—In spite of the adverse publicity that vane-anemometer methods of air measurement have had in the past and that contributed by the present paper, I endorse Mr. Erickovic's statement that anemometer traversing "has proved to be widely applicable, expeditious and simple" and add that available methods are accurate enough for the purposes for which they may be used. The fact that the great majority of minor mine officials assess relative changes in rates of air flow by comparison of crude vane-anemometer measurements, known to average 20 to 30 pct high, has no important bearing on this subject, because state inspection standards were based originally on such methods of air measurement. Federal inspection standards are based on actual rates of flow as determined by traversing, and interest in traversing methods is rapidly increasing. In considering traversing methods, three aspects are of major importance: (1) the absolute accuracy of calibrations; (2) the degree of interference with normal flow conditions introduced by traversing methods designed for accurate measurement by shaft-mounted instruments; and (3) the proper "method" factor to use for approximate measurements by hand-held instruments. With respect to absolute accuracy of calibrations, we have always placed reliance on calibrations made by the National Bureau of Standards, with which manufacturers' calibrations have usually agreed very closely. It is therefore particularly disturbing to find7 that calibrations made previous to June 1947 are presumably about 5 pct in error because of excessive registry caused by the thin flat plates on which anemometers were mounted for calibration. Velocities corrected for calibration have therefore averaged about 5 pct low in all probability. In this connection, it is interesting to note that an anemometer calibrated against Pitot-tube measurement by a single-point method in the Bureau of Mines experimental coal nine in 1923 indicated this same difference of about 5 pct and that the same instrument calibrated by a traversing method in a metal mine some months later indicated a difference in the same direction of about 4 pct. These results are reported by the Bureau of Mines.8 Regarding the degree of interference, or changes in velocity distribution, caused by the position of the observer's body in traversing operations, misconceptions seem to be especially prevalent, resulting in increasing advocacy of methods, such as the "clear section" method outlined in this paper, that cause just the type of interferences that they are designed to avoid. The degree of interference for any method may be gauged easily by a few experiments with a velocity-pressure gauge connected to a Pitot tube or with an indicating velocity meter such as the Velometer. In an experiment cited by McElroy and Richardson,# a decrease of 5 pct was noted at ten widths upstream from a 6-in. plank, whereas an observer's body at about the maximum practical distance of 6 ft downstream from the instrument is only about four widths away. In the Bureau of Standards paper previously mentioned, it is recommended that supports used in calibrations be at least 16 widths downstream. In practice, therefore, a downstream position of the observer is ruled out as far as accurate measurement is concerned. Operation of the anemometer by rigid shaft support from a point outside the section is seldom practicable; however, accurate results can be obtained, with the anemometer rigidly attached to a short shaft and held at arm's length, by an observer advancing across the traversed section while he faces the opposite wall and stands sideways to the current, provided that he keeps the instrument at least 3 ft away from his body at all times and traverses the entire section with it. If the traverse can be started with the observer in a side recess, the entire section can be covered in one operation. Normally, it would be covered in two half-sections. The presence of the observer's body does not, as is commonly supposed, increase the average velocity throughout the remaining part of the section. Rather, the velocities 1 to 2 ft on either side of his body are increased, but the distribution of velocities throughout the rest of the cross section remains normal, and a traverse made as stated gives a true average velocity for normal-flow conditions. Regarding the proper "method" factor for accounting for interference in the approximate methods of traversing with hand-held instruments, here again confusion prevails, for which the writer must assume some of the blame. A low grade middling sample from Mount Isa, Australia, assaying 31.7 per cent zinc, 12.9 per cent lead and 14.5 per cent iron was leached under atmospheric pressure in sulphate and sulphate-chloride solutions with ferric ions as oxidants. About 96 per cent of the contained zinc was dissolved into a 0.5 M H2SO4 - 0.5 M Fe2(SO4)3 solution at 90¦C within three hours from a five per cent by weight slurry density mixture. The leaching process is very temperature-dependent, suggesting a surface chemical control. In the latter stage, the leaching rates levelled off and the leaching was most probably controlled by both surface chemical reaction and diffusion processes. The addition of chloride ions in the leach solution resulted in an increase in the leaching rate. About 95 per cent of the lead sulphide contained was converted to lead sulphate which precipitated and remained in the residue. Essentially no lead remained in solution and the low chloride concentration did not affect the precipitation of lead sulphate. Half of the iron orginally present remained in the residue as pyrite although essentially all the cadmium and 90 per cent of the copper initially present were dissolved. Some three per cent of sulphide sulphur was oxidised through to sulphate, about 67 per cent was converted to elemental sulphur which can be recovered by solvent extraction, the rest remained in the residue mainly as pyrite. Ferric sulphate and sulphate-chloride solutions can be used to effectively leach finely ground lead-zinc middlings and other bulk sulphide concentrates. A complete separation of zinc from lead and silver has been demonstrated.

The Jim Bridger Coal Mine, operated by Bridger Coal Co., is located in Sweetwater County, WY about 56 km (35 miles) northeast of Rock Springs. Bridger Coal is a joint ven¬ture between Nerco Coal Corp, the operator, and Idaho Energy Resources Co. The permit boundary encompasses more than 81 km'- (20,000 acres) on the western side of the Continental Divide. Since the mine began opera¬tions in 1974, it has produced about 82 Mt (90 million st) of coal while moving about 344 hm3 (450 million cu yd) of virgin earth. Annual production averages 4.5 Mt to 6.4 Mt (5 million to 7 million st) of run-of-mine coal. Coal is consumed on-site by the Jim Bridger Power Plant, a 2000-MW generating station. Electricity is transmitted to the Pacific Northwest power grid that includes Oregon, Idaho and northern California. Geology The mine is located on the northeast flank of the Rock Springs uplift. This is a broad, asymmetrical anticlinal feature about 97 km (60 miles) long and 56 km (35 miles) wide with a north-trending axis. This uplift separates the Green River Basin to the west and the Great Divide and Washakie Basins to the east. Precambrian rocks on the apex of the uplift are estimated to be 5200 m (17,000 ft) above the Precambrian rocks in the Green River and Washakie Basins. Normal faults with generally less than 30-m (100-ft) vertical displacement cut through the uplift. The dip of strata on the flanks is generally between 3° and 15°.
