At the inception of the gold-mining industry at Kalgoorlie the small supply of firewood required for steaming purposes was naturally all drawn from the limited local areas, which promised soon to become denuded. With the advent of the railway toKalgoorlie came the ever increasing machinery and steam power, and the accompanying demand for firewood so increased that the fuel contractors began their operations, by following the timber belts along the Yilgarn railway line, and graduallygetting further westward, until at present we find them as far as Woolgangie, 63 miles from Kalgoorlie, and with the regular railway rates, I0. per ton per mile, this maybe considered the limit of payable timber at current rates. Although in the early days the reserve of timber along the railway line must have appeared as incalculable and inexhaustible as that of coal did in Europe a couple of centurys ago, the day is now near us when even this source will fail to meet the demands made upon it, for, although a good two years' supply is available or the areas under the axe, yet it is time to look ahead and find from whence the future supplies are to be drawn. Along the railways we find the zone of felling operations limited for want ofcommunication, and only such portions of the forests as are within six or seven miles of the railway come under the axe at present while virgin forests to the rear remain practically unexploited. Is recent years, exploration and development by diamond drilling has become a popular attack on the problem of finding new ore shoots and developing extensions of known shoots. Diamond drilling has been used in recent years in extensive sampling of disseminated copper deposits, in preference to churn drilling. At the Harvard gold mine, near Jamestown, California, Philip R. Bradley, Jr., general superintendent, reports that: "The Harvard work was a singular example of the reliance that can be placed on diamond drilling in evaluating an ore body." Drilling at the Harvard mine will be discussed in a subsequent section of the paper. So popular has diamond drilling become, indeed, that many who have had slight experience with drilling are inclined to regard it as a cheap cure-all. This paper proposes to show some of the limitations on the application of drilling and some of the steps that should be followed in drilling programs to obtain reliable results. Cost oF Drilling Drilling has the advantage, over shaft sinking and drifting, of lower cost and greater speed. As compared with churn drilling, the advantage of bringing up a coherent sample instead of fine cuttings for a sample is obvious. Diamond drilling is generally more expensive, however, and more engineering effort is required in combining the average of core and sludge samples. Exploration of drift walls by hammer drills to a depth of less than 30 ft. is generally cheaper than diamond drilling, but beyond this depth the diamond drill is cheaper and more efficient. The principal factor in determining cost of drilling is the character of the ground drilled. Broken ground with many fissures is most expensive to drill. Hard ground is less of a problem with diamond drills than with ordinary machine drills. Hardness or softness affects only the speed of drilling. Caving, easily washed, sandy or clayey ground requires continual cementing and casing, which is the greatest cost problem. Thus, soft, incompetent ground is more costly to drill than hard, massive ground. Cost of drilling per foot in good to fair ground varies from less than $I per foot, achieved in some districts in Ontario, the Mother Lode, and Missouri, to $5 per foot in many western states. In bad drilling ground, costs may range from $5 to $15 or more per foot, thus approaching the cost of drifting. Other factors that increase the cost per foot are: I. Short total length of hole drilled, so that the cost of moving in crews and equipment must be spread over a relatively few feet. 2. Cost of drilling per foot increases with depth beyond about 500 ft.. as more time is consumed in pulling rods' 3. Cost of preparing drilling stations, getting air underground to stations? etc' 4. Inaccessibility and lack of water on the job make for higher costs.

This paper is based on a study to determine the potential beneficiation opportunities for marble from Griekwastad in the Northern Cape Province. The marble was characterized mineralogically by X-ray diffraction. Major and trace elements were determined using inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectroscopy. The sample was crushed, and the crushed material beneficiated by tumbling and polishing. The resulting beads were incorporated into a variety of jewellery and other decorative items. It is concluded that the beneficiation of Griekwastad marble presents a good opportunity for value addition and job creation, provided that an effective marketing strategy for the products can be developed..

The kinetics of sulfidization of hematite (Fe203) by H2S gas at various partial pressures have been determined over the temperature range of 170° to 500°C. The process was controlled by thin films of pyrite (FeS2) and troilite (FeS) which were protective and formed diffusional layers. At higher temperatures the thermodynamic drive to form FeS2 decreased, and consequently the rate of formation of FeS, decreased. Conditions for the development of thin layers of FeSz consisting of 10 to 100 atomic diameters are presented. Laboratory flotation results on synethetic ores indicate floatability identical to that of pyrite of normal xanthate flotation. The prospect of high-temperature sulfidization of metal oxides using H2S, S, or other sulfur bearing compounds is intriguing as a potential activation process for flotation since the thermodynamics are very favorable for a large number of systems. If the kinetic parameters are sufficiently well understood it may be possible to provide surface sulfide layers a few angstroms thick, thus imparting normal sulfide floatability characteristics to the oxide. For thin layers the total sulfur pick-up would be small except for very high surface area materials but in most cases this sulfur could be readily removed by roasting if necessary. The general reactions for the sul-fidization of metal oxide MxO, to a metal sulfide MpSq using H2S may be written for the three conditions py > xq; py < xq; and py = xq: A large thermodynamic advantage is obtained in many systems because of the relatively large negative free energy of formation of H,O compared to H,S. For the temperature range 2S° to 1500°C &apos; where AFOis the standard free energy and T is absolute temperature. As is evident from Eqs. 4 and 5, the free energy of formation of H ,0 is approximately 35 to 37 kilocalories per mole greater than that for H,S over broad variations of temperature. For oxide-sulfide systems as outlined above, sulfidization may be expected to occur for the conditions: Groups I and 111: that is, if the terms on the right are more negative than those on the left the reaction is expected to occur thermodynamically. Image processing is a technique that simulates the human vision system. This technique enables applying every statistical or intelligent operation to recognize differences. In this way this new technique is used in quality control systems in most industries. Studying sedimentary rocks is very important from the economic point of view. Some units of sedimentary sequences involve different mineral deposits, hydrocarbon and water resources. Therefore it is important to identify and classify different sedimentary rocks. Descriptive classification of sedimentary rocks is usually based on visual and textural features and chemical composition of a sample. In this paper different samples of a limestone mine in central part of Iran are classified. The samples were collected from different parts of the mine and crushed down in size from 2.58 cm to 3.58 cm. The rock samples were labeled based on percentage of chemical and lithological compositions. Each sample was assigned to one of the distinguished groups. The images of the samples were taken in appropriate environment and processed. A total of 74 features were extracted from the identified rock samples in all images. In order to feature dimensional decrease, principal component analysis method was used. Then Bayesian statistical algorithm was used as a useful tool for classification. Classification Correctness Rate (CCR), calculated for the test data sets are %88, %68, %61 and %72 for the first to fourth class respectively. Therefore it can be inferred that the extracted features of images are appropriate indicators for different samples identification. These precise results besides the advantages of image processing technique, which are increasing speed of operation and decreasing cost, appears to be a desirable success.

With the technique and data obtained in using the blast hole diamond drill for &quot;Removal of Horizontal Level Pillar by means of Blast Hole diamond drilling at New Occidental Gold Mines N.L.,&quot; as described in Proceedings No. 133 of 1944, and a series of experiments using the blast hole diamond drill for stoping at New Occidental and New Cobar Mines over the past two years, a benching method of stoping has been developed using 2 inch coring diamond drill bits, resulting in efficient and economical ore extraction in these large ore bodies.During the experimental stages the standard H-inch blast hole was used, but the deflection of the holes, when using this solid bit, either decreased or increased the burden of the hole when it became necessary to drill holes deeper than 45 feet.It was found that after blasting vertical holes deeper than 45 feet, the ore did not break satisfactorily over the full length of the hole; on one occasion as much as 30 feet of bench was left at the bottom of the face, which had to be subsequently re-bored andblasted.As this defect was also noticeable to some extent even when the holes did not deflect, it was then obvious that the explosive had become less sensitive in the lower section of the hole. This was probably brought about by pressure being built up ahead of the detonation wave in H-inch hole, resulting in desensitization of the explosive.Another series of experiments were carried out, using 2-inch solid bits, which enabled a much greater burden on the holes, and the use of primacord for the full length of the hole.This gave satisfactory results regarding breaking and fragmentation, but was uneconomic owing to the excessive consumption of diamonds, and the slow rate of drilling.Further experiments were then carried out using 2-inch coring bits, (Fig. 1) which allowed holes of 90-feet to be bored with little deflection, and proved to be entirely satisfactory as to cost and speed of drilling.

Early in 1940 the development and sampling programmes in hand on the North and British Sections of North Broken Hill Limited were such as to necessitate the drilling of a large number of drill holes ranging up to about thirty feet in length. On the British Section, one purpose was to test the existence, width, and value of narrow lodes believed, for geological reasons, to occur in the walls of the existing workings. Another object was to definitely disprove the existence of payable shoots of ore in certain largerhodonite and quartz-garnet (&quot;garnet sandstone&quot;) pillars which had been formerly left as unpayable.On the North Section, the main purpose of the short holes was to delineate the ore-body boundaries by drilling laterally from drives in ore, and thus enable level layout to be planned in advance of sill stoping. It was also desired to test the walls of stopes in those portions of the mine where the economic limit of mining is not rendered obvious by a clear-cut wall, but should be determined by assay. In these latter cases it was hoped to eliminate &quot;prospecting by stoping,&quot; a procedure by which any doubts as to the existence of further good ore behind the low-grade walls were settled by continuing to stope laterally until all chance of such an occurrence was removed.LONG HOLE ROCK DRILLINGFollowing an investigation of recorded instances of similar practice elsewhere it was decided to use the rock drill for a series of trial sample holes. A 3-in. drifter was used. This was selected from those in use underground, and was given a special overhaul; had a new machine been purchased, a 4-in. type would probably have been obtained as being more suited to the work. The rods were H in. hollow round steel with a type &quot;1&quot; Jackrod thread. Couplings were of chrome steel, and were H in. in diameter, and 2 in. long. Jackbits (type &quot;1&quot; thread) in sizes from 2 in. to 4 in., with 1-in. gauge changes, gave a range of nine bit sizes. They were resharpened by hot milling, and were not milled to a definite gauge size.After sharpening, bits were sent underground without sorting into sizes, the drillers selecting the next bit with callipers. In view of the small scale of operations, it was not considered worth while to adopt special measures, such as the cold grinding of bits, which might have given a better product. Later, however, new bits were used exclusively, the idea being to accumulate enough blunt Jackbits to warrant a thorough treatment of the sharpening...

We studied the phase diagram of Na3AlFe-ZrO system, reduction of ZrO2 by aluminium and electrochemical behaviours of ZrO2 in the system. The results show that Na3ALF6-ZrO2 system is a simle eutectic one, that the velocity of reduction of ZrO2 in the system is rapid al 960&apos;C and that the Zr content in the alloy abtained can reach as high as 2.5wt%. Potential scanning shows that there exist new current peaks on the potential scanning plats except for the cuurent peaks corresponding to the oxidation of aluminium. The method of making Al-Zr alloy in our paper has advantages over the traditional method of mixing metals.

The works of Metal Manufactures Ltd are situated at Port Kemblam NSW, within a few hundred yards of a deep-water harbour. At present they occupy about 26 acres, and ample provision has been made for future extensions. Rail connection exists between various parts of the Works and the main South Coast Railway, the harbour jetties and the adjacent copper refinery of The Electrolytic Refining and Smelting Co Ltd. A plan of the works is shown in Fig 1.The company was incorporated in March 1916, and commenced production of copper wire in June 1918. Early in 1920, tube manufacture was undertaken, followed by telephone cable mnufacture in 1923. Today the Works consist of five principal sections: Founrdy, Tube Factory, Wire Factory, Cable Factory and Case and Drum Factory. Whilst the last four are engaged in producing the finished materials for despatch from the Works, the first-mentioned is engaged in producing copper, brass, and other non-ferrous billets for use in the Tube and Wire factories. In addition, there are Engineering and Metallurgical Departments supporting the manufacturing sections, and in these, as well as in all other sections of the Works, extensions have been carried out from time to time to provide for increased output and new types of products.

A description is given of preliminary work done to identify the problems inherent in electrochemical oxidation of metal sulphides, and particularly in the use of powder compacts as anodes in electrolysis. Lead flotation concentrate pressed into a compact can serve as an anode for direct electrowinning of lead according to the reaction PbS -7 Pb2+ +So +2e. No pYrometallurgical step is required, and sulphur is recovered in elemental form.In the experimental work, electrical conductivity of the compacts was achieved by addition of 5&#183;5 per cent of graphite. After compaction at 10-20 tons/sq. in. the anodes were strong and remained intact throughout the electro-oxidation period. Perchlorate electrolyte was used, but fluosilicate electrolyte is also applicable. A sheet of pure lead formed the starting cathode.As anode potential increased above 1&#183;0 V (v. SHE) PbS04 was formed in increasing amount. At 0&#183;90 V, Pb2+ extraction efficiency was 85 per cent. Anode potential was kept low by electrolysing at 60&#176;C and 15 mA/sq. cm., and by improving the porosity of the compact. Other metal sulphides (Zn, Fe, Cu) in the flotation concentrate also oxidize and release metal ions to the electrolyte, which would need to be purified prior to deposition of lead.Power requirement in a laboratory cell was about 0&#183;24 kWh per lb of lead extracted.

Alkaline rock-related precious metal deposits include: • orthomagmatic platinum group elements (PGE) ± gold (Au); • porphyry copper-silver-gold (Cu-Ag-Au, ±PGE); • epithermal Au-only, and Au-Ag-base metals; • submarine exhalative Kuroko-, Cyprus-, seamount- and Yellowjacket-type deposits; and • enigmatic deposits akin to Olympic Dam. Coeval epithermal deposits related to porphyry deposits suggest the two types represent separate immiscible fluids evolved in oxidized, CO2-rich alkaline magma chambers. Alkaline rock provinces develop above mantle hot-spots, but crustal structures control the final distribution of magmas and ore fluids. Prospecting guides for alkaline rock-related precious metal deposits include the presence of evolved alkaline rocks, pervasive K-metasomatic, redox and carbonatic alteration and low level Au (±Te, etc.) anomalies. Although alkaline igneous rocks crop out in less than 1 % of the area of the North American Cordillera and craton, alkaline rock-related ore deposits have produced nearly 13% of the total United States and Canadian lode gold production. Large (31-t or 1 million-oz) deposits are common (Fig. 1), and additional deposits and reserves are being discovered. New genetic models are evolving, making alkaline rock-related precious metal prospects attractive exploration targets.

Background: Mines of today are moving ever increasing tonnages of rock. The new ore bodies tend be of lower grade and located deeper in the earth?s crust. The industry?s focus to overcome this ?deeper but poorer? ore problem has traditionally been to lower the costs by increasing the scale of mining. This has resulted in an ever increasing size of mining equipment like drills, loading shovels, dump trucks. The main focus has been in reducing the cost per ton of mining. This cost focus has often resulted in increased waste rock dilution and more ore losses. From costs to value: Waste rock dilution means waste rock in the concentrator feed. It?s value in open pit mining is equal to the value of ore it replaces. In underground mining, waste rock dilution?s value is equal to the value of ore it replaces added to the costs of mining it. It is commonly accepted that waste rock dilution in open pit mining ranges between 5 and 20% and in underground mining between 5 and 40 % . In a typical large open pit mine ore value is from 20 to 60 USD per ton and mining costs are 1 to 3 USD per ton. One percentage point reduction in waste rock dilution represents savings corresponding to about 20% of total mining operation costs. The difficulty of reducing waste rock dilution comes from the complicated nature of the ores. Accurate ore waste-border detection has not been possible due to excessive costs. Core drilling combined with geochemical lab analysis is the most accurate method for locating ore waste borders. However, it is also expensive and time consuming, which is why it is often combined with somewhat lower cost methods like sampling drill cuttings from blasting drill holes or from reverse circulation drills and analyzing them in a laboratory. The main drawback with these methods, in addition high costs, lies in the sampling accuracy and in the quality control of the whole process when a large number of samples have to be handled manually. In every mine it is possible to halve waste rock dilution by using new on-line analysis technology .

A study of flocculation of ultra-fine coal particles by ultrasonic waves was investigated on a laboratory scale.The coal suspension was dilute, with low ionic strength, and at pH 6&#183;2.When a stationary sonic wave is set up in a solution containing suspended coal particles, it is believed that high and low pressure regions are alternately established at the half wave-length of the sonic wave and this resultsin the migration of coal particles towards the low pressure regions.As expected the flocculation is more effective as to frequency and the power of the ultrasonic waves is increased.The shape and size of the test equipment are also important variables.

It is known that the CaO-FetO-P2O5slag system has a wide liquid miscibility gap at steelmaking temperatures and this two-liquid slag phase has many advantages such as high activities of both FetO and CaO and high amount of P2O5. The phosphorus distribution ratio between the two-liquid slag and molten steel was confirmed to be higher than that between CaOsat.-FetO-P2O5slag and molten steel. The two-liquid slag may be useful for dephosphorization of molten steel and reduction of slag volume. Furthermore, the phase equilibrium of two-liquid CaO-FetO-P2O5slagsaturated with MgO was measured to determine the applicability of the two-liquid slag to dephosphorization in steelmaking process. In 2005, NIOSH and Badger Mining Corporation entered a partnership to implement ergonomic interventions, including a systematic process, to address exposures to risk factors that may result in musculoskeletal disorders or other types of injuries/illnesses. As a result of this partnership, an ergonomics process was integrated with the existing safety and health program to promote an on-going application of ergonomic principles, and over 40 task-specific interventions were implemented during the first year of the process. This paper presents details of the process integration, and several examples of task-specific interventions that reduced exposures to risk factors.

Appropriate roof control is the most important requirement in underground coal mining and, in the case of longwall panels or second mining in room and pillar extractions, this can be simply expressed in terms of good and predictable roof caveability. Studies of roof caveability have been undertaken in many coalfields around the world. Most of their conclusions. however, are directly related to the mining and geological conditions experienced in these areas and as a result, may not be applicable to the conditions encountered in the Appalachian coalfield. Furthermore, some of these studies appear to be theoretical and conceptual, ignoring many important parameters of the geological environment, whereas others rely heavily on geological information but lack a rigorous foundations upon which quantitative design guidelines can be built. The objective of this study is to analyze caving and mass deformation characteristics above longwall panels in Appalachia and includes: - Analysis of the effects of the geological and geomechanical characteristics of the strata on the caving height and the bulking of the caved-material. - Testing of the applicability of the various theoretical and empirical models of roof caving. Formulation of a numerical around- deformation model for ion-elastic material behavior.

The Bulli Seam, New South Wales, comprises medium to low volatile bituminous coal, generally of coking quality. It is worked over an area embracing 300 square miles.Variations in several factors are found.1. The seam is somewhat disturbed and dissected by various structural features.2. This structure, and present topography, have resulted in depths of cover from very shallow to approaching 2,000 ft in the presently worked areas.3. Wide variations of seam thickness occur.4. Gradations of rank occur from place to place.5. Variations in seam gas content and wide variations in seam gas composition are experienced.6. Variations in coal strength occur.These factors may contribute to the occurrence of stress and gas phenomena in mining exploitation.INTRODUCTIONThe Bulli Seam, the most extensively worked seam in Australia, is the uppermost seam of the Illawarra Coal Measures, which comprise the southern portion of the Sydney Coal Basin. Generally, the rank of the seam and its assemblage of types make it ideal for the production of hard metallurgical coke. The thickness and relatively flat dips render the seam suited to mechanized bord and pillar mining, and this method is used almost without exception. At the north-eastern corner of the field, stress and gas phenomena have occurred during mining.Various data have been assembled on physical, chemical and geological conditions of the seam which may influence the occurrence of stress and gas phenomena. This material is presented in an attempt to explain the location of such phenomena to date, and to enable variations in conditions to be considered when future possibilities are being assessed.

Selective fatty acid flotation of carbonate gangue from sedimentary apatites was achieved under acidic pHs without a specific apatite depressant and without conditioning the pulp with the collector. Concentrates (35% to 38% P2O5, 0.8% to 1% MgO) with high recoveries (80% to 85%) were produced from Indian and Chinese dolomitic ores. The calcareous and/or dolomitic-siliceous phosphate ores of South Florida and Utah required two flotation stages: one for carbonate removal, as mentioned above, and the other for phosphate recovery from siliceous gangue. Preliminary tests on the South Florida ore gave concentrates analyzing 29% P2O5 and 0.8% MgO, with a P2O5 recovery of 76%. A concentrate obtained from the western US phosphate ore from Utah assayed 30% P2O5 and about 1% MgO, with a P2O5 recovery of 89%.
