"Natural fibers, as a class of material, are attracting the interest of engineering sectors owing to specific advantages such as comparatively reduced cost and lower density as well as environmental benefits associated with renewability and biodegradability. For industrial applications, thermal properties, among others, are required. These are major requirements, especially in the case of an insulating natural fiber. In the present work, thermal properties of the curaua were investigated by photothermal techniques, i.e., the open photoacoustic cell and a method based upon the monitoring of the temperature evolution as a function of time. This investigation, in tum, permitted to evaluate two important thermal properties: the thermal diffusivity and the specific heat capacity of the curaua fibers. Indirectly, by means of simple mathematical relations, the thermal conductivity was also obtained. The results were compared with other materials and characterize the curaua fiber as an efficient insulator.IntroductionMaterials are gaining attention in recent years owing to their benefits for the environment as compared to synthetics. Being biodegradable, yearly renewable and recyclable, the natural planted-based are considered fully sustainable [1]. In particular, their life-cycle, from growing to industrial processing, absorbs as much C02 as it is emitted and makes them neutral with respect to greenhouse gases responsible for global warming [2]. Typical examples of these environmentfriendly materials are the lignocellulosic fibers that have been used in simple items such as ropes, baskets, textile, modest roofing, etc, since the beginning of our civilization [3]. In the past few decades, these natural fibers have been extensively investigated [ 4-1 O] as a possible reinforcement phase of polymer composites in substitution for synthetic fibers. In fact, engineering application of lignocellulosic composites are today in the market, especially in the automobile industry [11-13]. Out of the hundreds available natural fibers, only part of them exhibits superior properties to be qualified for composite reinforcement."

Floris Osmond, Honorary Member of the American Institute of Mining Engineers, born in Paris, March 10, 1849, died at Saint-Leu near that city, June 18, 1912. Taken suddenly ill with congestion of the brain while on his way from Paris to his home, he reached it in time to write on the typewriter his last wishes, one of which was that no biographical notice of his life should be published. Holding Osmond's memory sacred, as those who have known him will, is it our duty to conform with his desire ? Shall no mention be made in our Transactions of the beautiful life and great achievements of one of our most honored members? Is it not, on the contrary, incumbent upon us to disregard Osmond's instruction in this matter and to place on record our admiration for the nobility of his life, for his talents and for the importance of his work, that younger men may be inspired by it with a desire to be guided by worthy motives in the path of unselfish pursuits ? I cannot feel that in following this course I am disloyal to Osmond's memory and I am strengthened in this belief by the opinion of men of high honor whom I have consulted before undertaking the writing of this obituary notice. One of them, Professor Henry M. Howe, justifies my decision better than I could do it myself when he writes : " Let us look frankly at the matter. Here we have a most extraordinary life, a life of rare beauty and power of inspiration to the rest of mankind. In my opinion we should not deprive mankind of the stimulating influence of the example of M. Osmond simply because he shrank from publicity. Our young men see every day how greed and vulgar push succeed, and with what material rewards they are crowned. They see too rarely the more valuable crown which comes to self devotion. A permanent and public recognition of the beautiful qualities of Osmond's life cannot fail to appeal to the imagination of young men and to help to deflect them toward leading a noble rather than a sordid life. Therefore I feel that the Revue de Métallurgie and other bodies owe it to the public to give prominence to his career by means of biographical notices."

This paper, describing the milling practices at the Hayden concentrator of the Nevada Consolidated Copper Co. is the first of a Series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on milling methods and costs in various districts of the United States. The Hayden concentrator is located at Hayden, Gila County, Ariz., 20 miles from the mine at Ray, Pinal County, Ariz., and approximately 1-1/2 miles north of the junction of the Gila and San Pedro Rivers. During the fourth quarter of 1928 the concentrator treated daily by flotation an average of 10,336 tons of ore containing 1.25 per cent of copper. The average recovery during this period amounted to 87.84 per cent of the total copper. The concentrates contained 19.88 per cent of copper.

A series of iron-leaching experiments were conducted to test the ability of metal-reducing anaerobic organisms to reduce iron from Fe3+ to Fe2+ to dissolve it from iron ore tailings. This bioleaching process involves the fermentation of biomass from Typha latifolia (a common wetland plant) to generate organic compounds, which, along with metal-reducing organisms, reduce and dissolve iron. The concentration of dissolved iron over time was studied for one year. Iron concentration above 1150 mg/L was achieved at a pH range of 3.95–5.36. Tailings from multiple locations were examined.

TiO2 is an ideal material for catalytic technology due to its unique properties. In this paper, Sm3+ doped TiO2 photo-catalyst was developed to improve the efficiency of TiO2 and to use the natural light as irradiation source, which was made from Titanium Tetrabutoxide and Samarium Oxide with the Sol-Gel process. The Sm3+-TiO2 photocatalyst was used to degrade reactive orange 4 (RO4) in Azo Dyes. The effects of solution pH, Sm3+ concentration and catalytic time on the degradation rate of RO4 were studied. The characteristics of the catalyst were analyzed with XRD and TEM. The experimental results show that the catalyst has high activity in the degradation of RO4. The Azo bonds of RO4 are active and easily broken by oxidation. The catalytic activity of the Sm3+ doped catalyst greatly depends on the pH of solution. The catalyst has high photo-catalytic activity at both neutral and alkaline conditions. The degradation mechanism of the Sm3+ doped TiO2 photo-catalyst was also discussed.

PROF. Henry Louis, Newcastle-on-Tyne, England (communication to the Secretary): I have read this paper with much pleasure. It presents a very accurate summary of a very interesting district. Like the authors, I was struck by the extreme General View, near French Co.'s Cyanide Works, Showing Horse-Whims, etc. flatness of this region, which looks strange to a gold-miner accustomed to other reef-districts. This prevailing absence_of relief in the contours is shown in Figs. 1 to 4, from photographs taken in August, 1897, some of which also show the horse-whims used here for hoisting. The flatness of contour is due, no doubt, to the fact that the rocks are similar in structure over large areas and are easily decomposed. "Triboelectric separation of ilmenite ore based on the tribocharge differences between ilmenite and gangue minerals was conducted in this study. Triboelectric characteristics of ilmenite and its associated minerals were studied using polyvinyl chloride (PVC), pentatricopeptide repeats (PPR), copper, polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), stainless steel (SS), teflon and quartz glass (QG) tribochargers in lab triboelectric unit. Results demonstrated that the ilmenite particles tribocharged positively while gangue minerals tribocharged negatively using PVC as tribocharger. The particle size also has a significant effect on tribocharge, and the -0.125+0.074 mm is the optimal size fraction of triboelectric separation. Charge-mass ratios of minerals increase with the increases of tribocharging length, but the increasing rate gradually reduce. At 1.5 m tribocharging length, charge-mass ratios of ilmenite, quartz, feldspar and mica are up to 6.07 nC/g, -6.05 nC/g, -4.30 nC/g and -4.56 nC/g, respectively. Based on the triboelectric characteristics of each mineral, triboelectric separation of ilmenite was conducted, and the grade of ilmenite ore increased from 15.47% to 28.40%. INTRODUCTION As a transition metal titanium plays an irreplaceable role in medical, aerospace and materials due to its light weight, high strength and corrosion resistance. Pure titanium dioxide is an excellent white pigment and is widely applied in industries of paint and textile. Ilmenite is the main raw material for titanium industry. For the beneficiation of ilmenite, series methods have been proposed, such as the application of dry magnetic and wet gravity separations to separate the ilmenite from the zircon and rutile. Electrostatic separation is extensively used in the beneficiation of heavy mineral sands for the recovery of rutile, zircon and ilmenite while flotation is used to separate fine ilmenite (Mehdilo et al., 2014; Fan et al., 2014). Compared with flotation and gravity separation, electrostatic separation does not consume water, and native properties of materials will not be changed and energy consumption will be reduced (Wang et al., 2014). Thus, the wide application of electrostatic separation and other dry separation methods is a trend in separation and purification industry, especially in water-scarce areas."

The effect of the TiC addition on corrosion resistance of the Al2O3-C refractories in smelting reduction melts has been studied by quasi-station immersion and rotary immersion. The corrosion rate of Al2O3-C refractories is decreased with the TiC addition. The corrosion mechanism of Al2O3-C refractories is oxidization of graphite carbon by the oxides of the melts and the formation of deteriorate layer.

Strain-based failure criteria have several advantages over stress-based failure criteria: they can account for elastic and inelastic strains; they utilise direct, observable effects instead of inferred effects (strain gauges versus stress estimates) and they model complete stress-strain curves, including prepeak, non-linear elasticity and post-peak strain weakening. In this study, a strain-based failure criterion derived from thermodynamic first principles utilising the concepts of continuum damage mechanics is presented. Furthermore, implementation of this failure criterion into a finite element simulation is demonstrated and applied to the stability of underground mining coal pillars.In numerical studies, pillar strength is usually expressed in terms of critical stresses or stress-based failure criteria where scaling with pillar width and height is common. Previous publications have employed the finite element method for pillar stability analysis using stress-based failure criterion, such as Mohr-Coulomb and Hoek-Brown, or stress-based scalar damage models.A novel constitutive material model, which takes into consideration anisotropy as well as elastic strain and damage as state variables, has been developed and is presented in this paper. The damage threshold and its evolution are strain-controlled, and coupling of the state variables is achieved through the damage-induced degradation of the elasticity tensor. This material model is implemented into the finite element software Abaqus and can be applied to 3D problems.Initial results show that this new material model is capable of describing the non-linear behaviour of geomaterials commonly observed before peak strength is reached as well as post-peak strain softening. THERE has always been a question as to the extent to which oxidizable alloys might he recovered from charged scrap in the, acid electric furnace. While qualitative information was not lacking, the quantities that might be recovered and the conditions best suited for such recovery were not clearly defined. The present investigation was carried out to determine the efficiency of alloy recovery from residuals contained in the bath, especially in regard to the recovery of vanadium. A series of 24 heats was produced at the Burnside Steel Foundry Co., including medium manganese-molybdenum-vanadium, manganese-chromium, and grade B steels, in which vanadium recoveries from the residual vanadium were investigated. Recoveries of other alloys were also studied from the accumulated data. These heats were produced in a 5-ton acid-lined electric furnace. The analysis of metal and slag samples and the micrographs were prepared by the Research Laboratories of the Vanadium Corporation of America. In addition to the vanadium contained in the scrap charge, ferrovanadium was added to the charge and to the molten bath to bring the residuals up to the desired level. Vanadium pentoxide (V2O5) in one series of heats was added to the bath after meltdown, for the same reason. In addition to the general furnace practice, the slags of these various heats were treated with coke breeze, Ferrocarbo-S (silicon carbide), and aluminum dross to determine the effects of different reducing agents upon the alloy recoveries and upon the final product.

This paper describing the mining practices at the Old Dominion mine, Globe, Ariz., is one of a series being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines on mining practices, methods, and costs in the various minim districts in the United States. The Old Dominion mine is situated in the eastern port of the Globe-Miami district, about 1-1/2 miles north from the center of the town of Globe. An average of nearly: 1,200 tons per day was mined during 1928. The prevent production is about 1,500 tons per day; of this amount,, approximately 100 tons is direct-smelting ore that is shipped to the smelter at Miami and 1,400 tons milling ore which is treated in the company?s concentrator at Globe. About 600 men are employed at the mine.

The primary objective of this paper is to discuss the hazards and furnish a list of recommendations for the safe operation of quarries and related works. They have been compiled from Bureau of Mines publications covering the safety experience of engineers before and during the year in the mineral industry,5 from a publication of the National Safety Council, Inc.,6 from explosives recommendations made by various explosives manufacturers,7 and from suggestions obtained from quarries visited. The second objective is to describe and illustrate safety devices, practices, and quarrying methods. The quarrying and related industries of the United States had a lower accident-frequency rate than either the metal- or coal-mining industry as reported for 1942.8 However, the quarry industry ranked eleventh in 15 major industries during 1942 in lost-time accident fre¬quency; metal mining ranked fourteenth and coal mining fifteenth.

The thermal conductivity of rock surrounding the airway is one of the most important thermal properties for estimating strata heat transfer into the mine air and for designing the air-cooling strategies. Several laboratory methods are available for the determination of thermal conductivity; however, most of them are complex and cumbersome. The present study explains the working principle of Lee’s apparatus which is relatively simple, easy to fabricate and use, and provides consistent results. In the present study, thermal conductivities of sandstone cores obtained from an Indian coal mine are determined using Lee’s apparatus. An approach is discussed for determining the temperature gradient of sandstone specimens while cooling and used for calculating thermal conductivity. The thermal conductivity of different sandstone specimens attains values between 2.37 and 2.59 W m− 1 °C−1. For different sandstone cores obtained from the field, properties including specific gravity, specific heat capacity, thermal diffusivity, and porosity, along with thermal conductivity, are determined and highlighted in this study.

Samarium (Sm), as one of the rare earth elements (REEs), has gained significant attention in the production of samarium- cobalt (SmCo) magnets due to their high corrosion and oxidation resistance, as well as their high-temperature stability. SmCo magnets find applications in various industries, including but not limited to national defense, aerospace, military and medical equipment. Sm and Co have been classified as critical metals due to their economic importance and supply risk. Recovering Sm from SmCo magnets is an effective method to ensure a stable supply. The present study investigates an integrated hydrometallurgical treatment and combustion process for the preparation of rare earth oxide (Sm2O3 ) powders from SmCo. Initially, SmCo powders are exposed to nitric acid, and the resulting slurry is selectively oxidized at 250 °C to obtain Sm(NO3)3 , Co2O3 and Fe2O3 . Subsequently, the selectively oxidized powders are leached with water to extract Sm. Sm2O3 powders are produced from the obtained leaching solution using an energy- and time-efficient solution combustion process. Finally, the optimal conditions for the production of Sm2O3 are identified, and the produced powder is characterized through X-ray diffraction (XRD) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) analysis.

A prática de desoxidação dos aços durante o vazamento, na qual se utiliza o alumínio como desoxidante é bastante difundida entre os aciaristas. Entretanto, gera-se como produto da desoxidação a alumina 2 Al + 3 O = Al2O3(s). Na maioria das vezes, a alumina compromete a qualidade interna do produto, assim como a lingotabilidade do aço líquido elaborado. Estas inclusões não metálicas contribuem para a obstrução da válvula submersa durante o lingotamento. Visou-se neste trabalho avaliar o potencial da substituição de parte do alumínio pelo coque na desoxidação parcial dos aços baixo carbono acalmados ao alumínio durante o vazamento do metal dos convertedores para a panela. Após o desenvolvimento da metodologia e do procedimento operacional, utilizou-se o coque como pré desoxidante em 868 corridas, no período de 09/2014 a 02/2015, sem a ocorrência de reações durante a adição de coque no vazamento e sem o comprometimento do acerto da composição química.

The microstructure and mechanical strength variations of chromite pellets preheated and roasted in air were studied systematically. The results show that the chromite (Fe,Mg)(Cr,Fe,Al)2O4 is oxidized to magnesium-rich (Mg,Fe)(Cr,Fe, Al)2O4 and ferrochromium complex oxide (Cr,Fe,Al)2O3 in the preheating process over 500 °C. When the temperature is higher than 1000 °C, the new phase (Cr,Fe, Al)2O3 is formed, which is mainly distributed in the outer layer of a single chromite particle. Inner the particles there are acicular (Cr,Fe,Al)2O3 and unoxidized (Fe,Mg) (Cr,Fe,Al)2O4, which forming an interwoven structure together. The oxidation rates of pellets can reach to superior limits in 20 min. With the temperature increasing from 950 to 1300 °C, the mechanical strength and oxidized rates increase to varying degrees correspondingly.

The purpose of this investigation was to prepare high-purity iron-carbon alloys, to determine as precisely as possible the A3(GOS), the Acm(SE), and the A1(PSK) transformation temperatures in the meta-stable iron-iron carbide system (up to 1.4 per cent C), and to study the influence of carefully controlled and constant rates of heating and cooling (1/8 to 2o C. per minute) upon the transformation temperature and upon the resulting microstructure. Apart from the general metallurgical importance attending the completion of such a task, it will be noted that highly precise transformation temperatures are of interest and importance in the thermodynamic study of this system1. Several determinations of the iron-iron carbide diagram have been made2. These suffer generally from the low purity of the alloys used, and from the application of methods of investigation of low sensitivity. Attempts to compare and weight the many data available in an effort to construct as accurate a diagram as possible have, in the main, been unsuccessful. In general, the wide differences in the results of different workers, the lack of complete analytical data, the omission of important details relating to the heat-treatment of the alloys, and the meager description of the methods of investigation applied, render such a process of averaging nearly meaningless. It may be seen from the summaries by Epstein2 and Körber and Oelsenl that variations as great as 30' C. exist in the reported data on the A3 temperatures in iron-carbon alloys. Fortunately, the Aa temperature in pure iron is now known to be 910" C. ± 1° C.3 The best recent work on iron-carbon alloys is that of Esser4 on hypoeutectoid steels and that of Sato5 on both hypoeutectoid and hyper-eutectoid steels. Esser made a dilatometric and magnetic study of iron and iron-carbon alloys containing 0.06 to 0.86 per cent C, for which a high purity is claimed. Presumably the electrolytic iron was reasonably pure, but the alloys contained considerable impurities, on the average totaling 0.35 per

The scope of the course has been broadened, revised, and brought up to date, and it is being published as a similar series of seven miners' Circulars (Nos. 51-57, revised) on accident prevention in metal and nonmetallic mines. These circulars are: Accident Statistics (Miners' Circular 51), dealing with general statistics on accidents and injuries at metal and nonmetallic mines, including causes, costs, and the uses of investigations and reports of all accidents.
