Open pit/underground mining and mineral processing can generate large amounts of waste that contains sulfide-type minerals such as pyrite (FeS2), and it can produce acid mine drainage (AMD) when exposed to oxygen and water. This highly acidic wastewater contains heavy metals and this is one of the most serious environmental issues after mining operations taking several decades to completely remediate with high costs. For green mining, the present study focused on the development of a recovery technique for gold from an eco-friendly solvent, thiosulfate, by utilising mine wastes, tailings. First, gold recovery experiments in ammonium thiosulfate system were carried out using model samples representatively present in tailings (ie SiO2, Al2O3, FeS2, Fe2O3, and Fe3O4). The results showed that gold recoveries were negligible when using Al2O3, SiO2, Fe2O3, and Fe3O4 while pyrite shows a recovery efficiency three-fold as high as the maximum recovery efficiency when using others. Subsequently, the study also addressed the identification of the recovery mechanisms and post-recover process. The results indicate that tailings can be sufficiently utilised for gold recovery in the hydrometallurgy process and a further sustainable process can be established.

We use the results of new bedrock mapping, combined with geochemical point data and airborne radiometric data (in particular equivalent uranium concentrations) to help determine which geological units in the Paleoproterozoic Great Bear magmatic zone (GBmz) contain elevated uranium. The data collectively indicate that the highest primary uranium concentrations are in equigranular granites and subvolcanic/volcanic porphyries. Notably, these rocks host the majority of known uranium-bearing deposits and/or prospects in the GBmz. We speculate that the uranium in these deposits/prospects was derived from nearby, uranium-enriched rocks and was mobilized by much younger, circulating hydrothermal fluids. Sedimentary rocks of the Thelon and Dismal Lakes groups unconformably overlie the GBmz and are known to host unconformity-type and sandstone-hosted uranium prospects. Most likely, the uraniumenriched rocks of the GBmz acted as a uranium donor to these overlying sedimentary basins. The method of investigation employed in this study may be applicable to other ‘granitic’ terrains in order to identify regions with favourable rocks for uranium exploration.

As greater amounts of fine iron ore concentrates enter the marketplace, new investments in iron ore pelletising capacity are inevitable to deliver these concentrates to steel industry consumers. When investors assess the two well-proven pelletising technologies, the straight grate and grate-kiln, the most appropriate choice may not be immediately evident. Certain technical, market and site-specific factors will favour one technology over the other; investors need to be aware and understand these factors in order to make the best investment decision. Hatch has compared the merits of both technologies regarding plant configuration; type of iron ore processed; energy consumption and flexibility to use a variety of fuels; ability to produce the required pellet quality; required plant capacity and scale; operating and capital costs and environmental performance. Ther?nal, X-ray, metallographic, and vapor pressure data were obtained to establish the phase diagram and standard free energy, enthalpy, and entropy of formation for the compounds in the Sw-Zn system. Four compounds, SmZn, SmZn2 , SmZn4.s, and SmZn8.5, melt congruently at 960°, 94Z°, 908°, and 940°C, respectively. The cornpounds SlnZns, Sm3Znll, and SnzZn7.3 undergo peritectic decomposition at 855", 870°, and 890C, respectively. Another compound of uncertain stoichiometry, SmZn11, undergoes peritectic decomposition at 760°C. Four entectics were observed with the following compositions in weight percent zinc and eutectic tenzperatures in degrees Centigrade: 12 pct, 680°C; 36 pct, 890°C; 58 pct, 850°C; and 72 pct, 900°C. An allotropic transformation and a composition range were observed for the SmZnz compound. The transfor)nation varies from 905" to 865°C as the zinc content increases from 16.0 to 48.5 wt pct, respectively. The free energy of formation of the compounds at 50PC varies between -15.9 kcal per mole for SmZn to -51.1 kcal per mole for SmZn,.,. Corresponding enthalpies vary between -19.2 to -78.3 kcal per mole. The ther-modynamic properties for the liquid alloys are described by the relations: A search of the literature revealed very little information on the Sm-Zn system. Chao et al.&apos; as well as Iandelli and palenzonai have reported the structure of SmZn to be cubic B2 type and Kuz&apos;ma et al3. have reported the structure of -sm2zn17 to be of the Th2Ni17 type. The purpose of this work was to establish the phase diagram of this system, to determine the zinc vapor pressure over the solid two-phase regions of the SYstem, and to calculate the thermodynamic properties of the compounds. MATERIALS AND EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES The metals used in this investigation were Bunker Hill slab zinc 99.99 wt pct pure and Ames Laboratory samarium. Analysis of the samarium by chemical, spectrographic, and vacuum-fusion methods gave the following average impurities in ppm: Nd, <200; Eu, <100; Gd, <100; Y, <50;Ca, 225; Ta, 400; Mg, 10; Cu, ~50; 0, 175; H, 20; and N, 15. The elements Fe, Si, Cr, Ni, Al, and W were not detected. The samarium was received as sponge metal and was kept under argon except when being cut with shears and when being weighed. Tantalum was found to be a suitable container for alloys with zinc contents up to the Sm2Znl, stoichio-metry. At higher zinc contents the grain boundaries of the tantalum containers were penetrated by the alloy and the containers failed during prolonged annealing. About 25 g of massive zinc and samarium sponge were sealed in tantalum crucibles equipped with thermocouple wells. These crucibles were in turn sealed in stainless-steel jackets. All closures were made by arc welding under an argon atmosphere. The samples were equilibrated in an oscillating furnace and in some cases were given various heat treatments in a soaking furnace. After appropriate heat treatment the steel jackets were removed and the alloy subjected to differential thermal analysis. The apparatus was calibrated against pure zinc and pure copper and found to reproduce the accepted melting points within 1°C. Alloys were subsequently subjected to metallographic examination and those of appropriate compositions were used for X-ray diffraction analysis and for zinc vapor pressure determinations. The vapor pressures were determined by the dewpoint method. Both the differential analysis and dewpoint measuring apparatuses have been described in earlier papers.4, 5 All alloy samples were etched with Nital (0.5 to 3 pct nitric acid in alcohol) except the samarium-rich alloys. These more reactive alloys were electro-polished in a 1 to 6 pct HClO4 in methanol solution at -700c at a potential of 50 v. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS Phase Diagram. The results of thermal analysis are indicated by the points on the phase diagram, Fig. 1. Eight compounds and four eutectics were observed. The composition of the compounds and their melting or peritectic temperatures are given on the phase diagram. The four eutectic compositions in wt pct zinc and eutectic temperatures in % are: 12 pct,- 680°C; 36 pct, 890°C; 58 pct, 850°C; and 72 pct, 900°C. The stoichiometry of the most zinc-rich compound is still uncertain, but is very likely either SmZnll or SmZnlz. However, to simplify the presentation which follows it will be referred to as SmZnll. As shown on the phase diagram the phase regions for some of the samarium-rich alloys have not been unambiguously established. "Aqueous dispersions of air specifically prepared on the basis of flotation reagent solution acquire active properties in relation to the solid surface and may be imply as a medium for flotation ores. Such aerated solutions were defined as Activated Aqueous Dispersions of Air (AADA) with 5-6:1 ratio and the procedure of mineral separation was defined as a flotation process under non-equilibrium conditions. These procedures differ from conventional flotation mainly in reagent interaction with minerals through their adsorption films on gas bubbles simultaneously forming flotation complexes. Gas-liquid mixture is kept till an adsorption layer of reagents close to the limit value is formed on the surface of bubbles. The theoretical basis of AADA is considered.The results of two-phase gas- liquid mixture (AADA) were studied. Two versions of AADA were considered. Electrical surface potential of the air bubbles with the surfactant film, untreated minerals particles in Coulomb attraction and flotation complex formation were analyzed. Special flotation machines were constructed for separation of mineral suspension in air dispersion, whose effectiveness was confirmed in flotation of apatite waste of Kovdor ore. FK-9 machine introduced on Kovdor iron ore combine for the recovery of apatite from current departures of factory. The froth product contained 7.2 % P2O5, with recovery of 44 % apatite, which was processed for getting melted phosphoric-magnesium fertilizers."

With the development of the coal mine regulation regime, the situation of coal mine safety production in China has continued to improve. However, coal mine accidents have not been fundamentally eliminated; constantly learning from historical accidents can make mining work safer. Therefore, to better understand the coal mine accident characteristics, this study analyzes the tendency of coal mine safety accidents from multiple perspectives, among which all accidents after the establishment of the State Administration of Coal Mine Safety in 1999 are the top priority. The results show that strict national policy, technological progress, and reasonable coal prices are conducive to the safe development of mines. On the contrary, high-intensity centralized production will lead to frequent accidents in the peak season of coal production. In addition, the type of coal mine ownership will have an indirect impact on the occurrence of coal mine accidents. The research results not only play a positive role in the prevention and control of coal mine accidents in China but also have reference meanings for the safety production of coal mines in other countries in the world.

Concentrations of minerals between 3.5 and 5 specific gravity such as ilmenite, rutile and zircon in large accumulations of sand constitute "heavy mineral" placers. Two fundamentally different modes of formation characterize "trap" and "bed" placer variants. Smaller and generally higher grade trap placers form during sediment erosion or reworking. Because of their smaller size, they rarely yield economic heavy mineral deposits. They become economic, either if they contain more valuable "heavies" such as gold, or, if they occur within or near much larger but lower grade bed placers. Bed placers form during sediment accumulation episodes in any environment and lithofacies where mineral supply and fluid dynamics are favorable. Three heavy mineral deposits are discussed to illustrate bed placer geology and how trap placers occur with and relate to them.

"INTRODUCTION During the past 4 or 5 years the frequent occurrence of bumps in coal mines of the Cumberland field, in Harlan County, Ky., and Wise County, Va., has caused much apprehension among miners and mining officials of that region.These bumps have caused many deaths and injuries, and have been increasing in frequency. Eight men were killed and a number injured by bumps in the first 4 months of 1934. Their unpredictable occurrence and the usual absence of any preliminary warning tremors or sounds, such as ordinarily precede a large fall of roof, cause fear of other bumps and impair the morale of mine workers.Acknowledgments This report on bumps in coal mines of the Cumberland coal field of Kentucky and Virginia is based on an investigation made at the urgent request of .the Harlan County Coal Operators Association, through James F. Bryson, director of safety of the association, to the Director of the United States Bureau of Mines, following a series of disastrous bumps in. Harlan County, Ky., and Wise County, Va. The request was granted and the writer detailed to undertake the investigation, which was made in June 1934.The officials of certain operating companies in the Cumberland field gave every facility for examining the conditions accompanying bumps in their mines. "Archean lode gold deposits of both vein and chemical sedimentary types typically have major enrichments of certain rare elements, including Au, Ag, As, Sb, B, W, Se, Te and Bi, coupled with low or negative enrichments of the more abundant and mobile base metals, Cu, Pb and Zn. On the other hand, in massive base metal sulphide deposits Au, Ag, Cu, Zn and in some instances Pb are all enriched by a factor of 200 to 2000 t:'Jf'1pared to background and there is no large separation of gold relative to the base metals.The fluids from which gold was precipitated in veins were at temperatures of 320 to 480°C, at lithostatic pressure, had significant C02, and Na """" K; whereas the fluids which generated base metal deposits were at 250-300°C, at hydrostatic pressure, had C02 < < H20 and Na > > K.Many lode gold deposits are characterized by K, C02 and Si additions to their enveloping rocks, whereas base metal deposits typically have a fixation of Fe, Mg, Si and S in footwall rocks. Lode gold deposits may also have a relatively large halo of low-temperature oxidative, sadie spilitization in enclosing volcanic rocks, where seawater has later streamed into cooling stocks or flows that have initially acted to focus gold mineralizing fluids along thermal contraction fractures. The submarine environment is one hydrologically appropriate for the mixing of two initially independent hydrothermal systems, and the blending of their separate characteristics. Hence, lode gold and base metal massive sulphide deposits appear to be products of two distinctly different crustal and hydrological regimes. The former involves a high-temperature, high-pressure discharge of fluids which probably were generated during dehydration accompanying burial and progressive accumulation of volcanic-sedimentary sequences, with an additional influence of marine water in the near-sea-floor environment. The latter represents thermally driven convection of ocean water at lower temperatures and under hydrostatic conditions.Auriferous fluid systems with only minor base metal content could plausibly be generated during dehydration accompanying burial and metamorphism, when the water-to-rock ratio is low and halogen availability is limited by crustal abundance (- 60 ppm Cl). These two factors may constrain the uptake of the abundant base metals into fluids, but the solubility of rare elements is not constrained by limited fluid; and preferential uptake of Au along with other rare elements may be promoted if such elements compete more successfully for the limited halogens than the base metals, and/or have an alternative complexing agent such as CO or C()j-."

[The U. S. Bureau of Mines at its Pittsburgh Experiment Station is frequently called upon to determine by laboratory tests the explosibility of suspensions in air of various dusts encountered in mines and elsewhere. Not all dusts which are combustible or contain combustible material will form explosive mixtures with air under ordinary conditions of temperature and pressure. They may not be highly combustible enough. They may contain a considerable amount of inert or non-combustible material or, the dust particles may not, be fine enough to form explosive mixtures. A knowledge off the chemical composition of a dust together with a determination of the size of the particles often gives valuable indications. But in many cases actual explosibility tests are necessary. Such a case is evidently that of powdered soap, whose explosibility hazard the Bureau was recently called upon to determine, Although an explosion which occurred in a soap plant as early as 1890 was attributed4 to powdered soap, it is apparent, due to the great number of inquiries received by the Bureau, that the hazard presented by powdered soap has not been at all generally appreciated. To the writers&apos; knowledge, no extensive investigation of the explosibility of powdered soaps has been made. It is only recently that pure powdered soap has been manufactured on a large scale. The familiar "soap powder" in the past was usually a mixture of soap with a relatively large quantity of sodium carbonate. Often it contained large amounts of moisture and abrasive material. Even a highly combustible dust when mixed with large quantities of inert dust will not form explosive mixtures with air. Pure powdered soap, however, presents a different aspect. Pure soap is formed by combination of alkali (incombustible material) with fatty acid (combustible material). Toilet soap fray also contain a certain amount of glycerin and essential oil winch, being combustible influence the explosibility]

Introduction.-I esteem it a great honor to be asked by this Institute to give them an address chiefly devoted to metallurgy. While it is with great regret that I find myself unable to be present to deliver this in person, I take this opportunity of wishing your society every success in its continued career of usefulness to the metallurgists of the great Republic. To be elected, eight years ago, along with Dr. J. E. Stead, F. R. S., as one of your Honorary Members, was a privilege which I greatly esteemed, for I consider that no society in America has done so much as ours for the advancement of metallurgy. Those who have Served our Society.-Where many have served so well, it is difficult, without appearing to make unavoidable distinctions, to select names from those of your members who have done so much for the cause we have at heart-the advance and progress of metallurgy. As typical, however, and not in any way meant as a complete list, there are among others the following names which in the past and to-day stand out prominently in this science of ferrous metallurgy. With most of those now mentioned I have personally come in contact, or by correspondence in some few cases, and have exchanged views, since I first came over to America 30 years ago. Beneficiation tests were conducted on samples from three ore zones in the Los Monos, Navay orebody in Táchira State, Venezuela as part of an overall feasibility study. The scope of work included ore sample characterization, flowsheet development, and optimization of beneficiation variables on a bench scale followed by confirmation on a pilot plant scale. Phosphate in the ore samples occurred primarily as francolite and was associated with quartz, kaolinite, and feldspar. Liberation of the phosphate began at 589 microns (28 mesh) for the main ore zone sample and at 295 microns (48 mesh) for the lower-grade ore zone samples. Development tests on simulated mining composites demonstrated that the samples responded well to 589 micron (28 mesh) grinding, two stages of high intensity scrubbing, conditioning at high % solids with caustic and equal amounts of tall oil and fuel oil, and separate coarse and fine flotation circuits with one stage of roughing and two stages of cleaning (reflotation). Concentrates in the range of 31.5-34% P205 with recoveries from 64-70% were obtained from the mining composites. Product quality for all concentrates in the range of 31.5 % P205 was good; 1.40 CaO/P205 and 0.04-0.05 minor element ratios. Confirmation testing in a continuous pilot plant produced results similar to those achieved in the laboratory.

[For almost 2 decades the Bureau of Mines has been Interested in converting solid fuels to liquid fuels. Small-scale laboratory investigations were carried on for a number of years.4/ This work wad expanded substantially under authority of Public Law 290, approved by the 78th Congress on May 5, 1945. As part of the. broadened program, coal-hydrogenation demonstration plant was designed and erected at Louisiana, Mo., where: hydrogen-manufacturing and compression equipment, shoes, electric power, and other utilities and facilities were available from a discontinued wartime ammonia works . The plant uses the direct -hydrogenation or Bergius process, but the process differs from prewar European practices in many respects. Many noteworthy improvements h eve bean made, particularly by substituting automatic instruments for manual control of process variable&apos;s, in line with modern American processing practices. The over-all objective of the demonstration plant is to bridge the gap between laboratory end commercial-scale operation by furnishing cost and engineering data to develop a synthetic liquid-fuels industry when it proves technically and economically justified. Fitting into the over-all program, specific objectives o early runs were to (1) train personnel who had no experience with this type of operation, (2) break in the installed equipment, (3) obtain successfully integrated operation of the entire plant, and (4) work towards obtaining data on the hydrogenation of coal-tar oil and a typical low-ash coal. In beginning fan integrated operation, it is common practice to operate and obtain reaonably smooth performance of each unit before the over-all operation is undertaken. The first part of the plant completed was the refinery, consisting of several fractionating systems, a stabilizer, and a chemical treater.]

The heats of combustion of fuels are determined in the laboratory by means of a calorimeter, usually of the oxygen bomb type. A known weight of the fuel is burned in an atmosphere of oxygen under approximately 400 pounds pressure in a heavy metal container-the bomb- and the heat evolved is imparted to a definite quantity of water. From the rise in temperature, measured by means of a Beckmann thermometer, and other data incidental to the determination, the heat value of the sample can be calculated. On paper, the method appears simple indeed, but in practice the determination of the heat of combustion is one of the most difficult of the various coal analyses. This h as led to considerable investigational work in order to obtain formula: whereby calorific values of solid fuels could be calculated from proximate analysis data al one. The proximate analysis of a fuel consists of the determination of moisture, ash, and volatile matter, with fixed carbon by difference. Sulphur determinations properly belong to the ultimate analysis, but in this section of the country, where the sulphur content of the coal is comparatively high, a request for the proximate analysis of a fuel implies the determination of the sulphur as well.

The New York City Transit System is celebrating its Diamond Jubilee this year. In 1904, 9.3 route miles of New York&apos;s first subway was placed in operation in lower Manhattan. Since that date the system has grown to 230 route miles and 458 stations (See Exhibit #1). The age of the system immediately provides a clue to the nature of our construction activity. While we must always plan for the future and expand the system in the direction of the future needs in New York, a substantial amount of time and money must be channeled towards the modernization and maintenance of the existing system which provides vital transportation for 3-1/2 million passengers a day. This paper however will be directed to our New Route&apos;s Construction and, specifically, to three rock tunnel and cut and cover sections presently under construction. Currently, New York is engaged in the construction of about 9 New Route miles of structure. Briefly, the 3 Sections we will discuss are as follows: Route 131-A Section 5A is a 4 track structure in Manhattan and includes the new Lexington Avenue Station. This 1240 foot long section is located between Park Avenue and 3rd Avenue and is a combined cut and cover and rock tunnel section under 63rd Street. Route 131-A Section 5B is an intricate 2423 foot long 4 track rock tunnel section extending from 3rd Avenue to the FDR Drive under 63rd Street in Manhattan.

The principal official test performed by the Bureau of Mines to determine the permissibility of coal-mine explosives, commonly referred to as the gallery test, has been in use at the Bruceton station for many years (2, 16).4/ In this test the explosive under study is loaded into the borehole of a steel cannon and fired into a flammable mixture of natural gas and air or natural gas, air, and coal dust. To meet the requirements for permissibility, the explosive must not ignite the gas mixture under the conditions of the test. There is little doubt that these tests have succeeded in the main objective, namely, to screen the relatively safe from the relatively hazardous explosives. It has been generally conceded that adoption of permissible explosives by the coal-mining industry in the United States has substantially reduced the frequency of disastrous underground explosions caused by blasting. In recent years, however, research workers planning programs for improving the safety of coal-mine explosives have felt the growing need of a more quantitative method for measuring the incendivity of explosives based on a better understanding of the role of the important variables in the gallery tests, Accordingly, it was decided to apply certain statistical methods and techniques to the gallery test to develop it into a more precise tool for evaluating permissible explosives. One of the first and more important methods applied for this purpose was the up-and-down technique (6,7,17), It was demonstrated (14,15) that the weight of the explosive charge directly affects the ignition probability of the natural gas-air atmosphere and that the curve of ignition probability versus charge weight is a cumulative normal curve. Following these experiments, a program, still in progress, was set up to study how the addition of sodium chloride to various permissible-type ex-plosives affects their incendivity. Polymorphic transformations taking place in grinding processes, of massicot to litharge in PbO system, and of y to a in Fe203 system, were re-investigated. Grinding was carried-on in a steeel rotation mill charged with WC balls, under inert atmosphere. The kinetics of transformation in PbO was established by means of quantitative X-ray diffraction analysis. The resulting data fit a modified logistic growth function up to about 75% of transformed volume fraction, when a mixture at steady-state equilibrium is formed. The reasoning for the use of a modified logistic function is discussed. A sigmoidal growth function can be used if resulting data fit also an empirical power relationship between transformed volume fraction and time. However, it lacks the significance expressed by a modified logistic function. Assuming, the loss in magnetism is directly related to the amount of transformation in Fe 203, a quantitative analysis was performed using a magnetic balance method. The results fit only the modified logistic growth function, and transformation proceeds almost to completion. A wide literature survey of the subject is given. Available data from literature is compared with the results of the present study, and is shown also to fit a modified logistic grown function, with surprisingly similar slpes in a linear plot, independently of the material. The instrumentation effect on kinetics parameters, and the establishment of equilibrium mixture values, are discussed.
