The quantitative separation of tantalum from columbium has been obtained through several liquid-liquid extraction processes. The valuable metals are separated by selective extraction from organic feed solution using a mineral acid or by selective extraction from aqueous feed solutions employing an organic solvent. The greatest degree of separation was obtained when organic ketones, particularly methyl isobutyl ketone, were used. Approximately 200 combinations of various organic solvents and mineral acids were tested as possible separation systems in which the tantalum or columbium content was extracted from organic solutions of the anhydrous pentachlorides.

The ventilation of metal mines is becoming more of a fundamental requirement than it was 10 or even 5 years ago. There are many reasons for this, and in general they are based on economy or efficiency rather than health or safety, yet the latter enters into the picture in at least some instances. One Montana metal mine which had installed mine fans and a general ventilating system shut down the fan when there was a period of cessation of work; within a few weeks it was found that the underground timbers were becoming so covered with fungus that the fans were put into operation and thereafter continued in operation whether the mine was worked or not. The fungus soon disappeared and the cost of operating the fans was held to be far less than would be the numerous losses from timber decay which quickly started when cessation of air flow was encountered. A large iron ore mine in Michigan had much difficulty in holding men in a slicing region due to foul air under certain surface conditions as to direction of wind. Upon the placing of a moderate sized fan on the surface with some doors, stoppings and regulators underground, not only was the bad air condition removed but there was found to be a decided increase of tonnage per man per shift and timber decay was retarded to a very considerable extent. This particular mining company was rather inclined to be angry when I called attention to some of the what I considered very bad working conditions underground, and the mine superintendent for about a year and a half was on anything but friendly terms with me. Later on when the effect of the placing of the fan was found (the fan had been placed over his protest), that, man came through very nicely with a letter and congratulated me on the recommendation made and congratulated himself and the company on the conditions obtained after the installation of the fan. BEEDON AND C. J. JONKER* Dr Bleloch's paper has outlined the advantages of recycling stack-gas of low nitrogen content in the blast furnace. In the first instance it would appear to be extremely beneficial in controlling the hearth temperature and allowing a 100 per cent oxygen-blast to be used. On a second point however we have to disagree. It is claimed that heat is liberated in the combustion zones by the oxidation of CO to CO2 near the tuyeres and in the subsequent reduction of the CO2 by CO. The author has hypothesized as follows, and we quote: 'The C+CO2=2 CO reaction in the outer combustion zone at about 1 700°C is no longer endothermic due to loss of stability of CO2 and its consequent dissociation into CO and free oxygen.' This statement requires closer examination. If we consider the individual events occurring with the CO in the recycled topgas, with the oxygen in the blast and with the coke in the burden, as done by Dr Bleloch, the following heat considerations emerge. All heats of reaction are calculated from the enthalpy values of each reactant and product, as well as the temperature dependence of their molar heat capacities. (a) At the tuyeres: CO+1/2 O2-+CO2 . . . . . (1) CO, CO2 at 500°C; O2 at 25°C. ?H reaction = -65 000 cals/mole CO The reaction (1) is exothermic. (b) In the outer combustion zone: CO2+C?2 CO . . . . . . . . (2) C, CO at 1 700°C; CO2 at 500 0C. ?H reaction = -56 000 cals/mole CO Reaction (2) is endothermic. The overall heat gain of reactions (1) and (2) is ?H=+56 000 - 65 000= -9000 cals/mole CO i.e. the overall reaction is slightly exothermic, the amount of heat liberated is however smaller than suggested by Dr Bleloch. (c) The dissociation CO2+CO+1/2 O2 . . . . . (3) is a highly endothermic reaction at 1 700 0C, requiring 82 000 cals/mole CO2 to proceed to completion. Furthermore, this reaction (3) is energetically not favoured to proceed, as can be observed from the free energy-temperature relationship of figure (3), which favours the formation of CO2 at 1 700 0C. Hence direct dissociation of CO2 at 1 700 0C appears to be unlikely.* The concept of recycling topgas is however still intriguing from many other points of view. Apart from providing a very efficient method of hearth temperature control, it will create a much higher CO partial pressure in the stack. NINETY years after the Riddle nickel deposit N was discovered in Oregon in 1864, Hanna Coal & Ore Corp. began mining operations. Until 1954 much prospecting and preliminary development work had been done on the property, but no ore had been shipped other than for metallurgical testing. The deposit is being explored by churn drilling and trenching, and a few test shafts have been put down for the purpose of studying the ore in place, determining volume and moisture factors, and gathering bulk samples for pilot plant and smelter tests. In churn drilling, 6-in. casing is driven down 2 or 3 ft behind the drill bit and bottomed at each 5-ft interval. All the sludge for each cased 5-ft interval is dumped through a splitter and one eighth is saved and analyzed. Drillholes are stopped after going through the ore zone and penetrating fresh peridotite in which the nickel content is less than 0.5 pct.

THE wide variation in tension and compression properties' which exist between the a,ß and ? phases of plutonium indicate that a study of the impact properties would give a greater insight into the variables affecting the mechanical properties and formability of plutonium. In tension the a phase is quite brittle with elongations less than 1 pct. The ß phase at normal test speeds is unusually ductile; elongations up to 621 pct have been obtained. However, the ß phase is quite sensitive to strain rate; elongations decrease rapidly as strain rate is increased. The y and 6 phases are less ductile than the ß phase, with the 5 phase the more ductile of the two. Neither are very sensitive to strain rate. Considering the brittle nature of a Pu in tension and compression and the strain rate sensitivity of ß -phase Pu, both unnotched Charpy specimens and standard V-notched Charpy specimens were fabricated for testing. In addition, since iron in amounts greater than 500 ppm forms a Pu-PlgFe eutectic network which inhibits microcracking in as-cast plutonium,' it was decided to prepare impact specimens with low and high iron contents. Chemical analysis and density data for the impact specimens are presented in Table I. A total of 55 impact specimens, 32 unnotched and 23 with the standard Charpy V-notch were tested at temperatures from —45' to 330°C. The test results for both unnotched and notched specimens are illustrated in Fig. 1.

A mathematical study has been made of the amount of support a cement sheath could provide to casing cemented into the earth. Several assumptions were required to make the analysis, but only two of them are limiting: (I) the pipe must be completely surrounded with cement, and (2) any mud filter cake between the cement and formation has the same physical properties as either the cement or formation. The calculations showed that little support would be provided to the pipe before an unsupported cement sheath failed in tension; however, when the cement is confined between the pipe and wellbore and is loaded in compression, the pipe could receive a considerable amount of support. In fact, the theoretical results indicate the lower grades and larger sizes of pipe could have their working pressures doubled when reasonable compressive loads were applied to a surrounding cement sheath. These data are shown in six charts. Other down-hole conditions such as setting the cement under pressure, increased temperature and cement confinement all tend to increase the potential usefulness of the sheath. Because of size limitations, a laboratory program to verify the most important results of this mathematical study would be very difficult. However, small-scale field tests would be practicable. This paper shows that, if a solid cement sheath can be obtained in the field by either primary cementing or by repair after detection of flaws by surveys such as the new cement-bond logs, the use of this approach to reducing pipe costs merits further consideration. INTRODUCTION A modification in casing design practices is proposed which may either reduce the amount and grade of steel required to contain a specified internal pressure or permit the working pressure to be increased for a specified weight and grade of pipe. One of the more important considerations in casing design is its resistance to collapse; however, Bowers' and, more recently, O'Brien and Goins' have shown many casing programs are unnecessarily conservative in this respect, and they have indicated how savings can be made by designing for more realistic down-hole conditions. Earlier, Saye and Richardson howed that pipe costs could be reduced by considering the cement sheath as a part of the casing string when collapse resistance was being calculated. More recently, Rogers4 has raised the question as to whether a cement sheath might be considered in the design for burst resistance of the cemented casing. Calculations have been made for the increased burst resistance a cement sheath would provide for casing in a wellbore, and the results show that a sizable amount of support could be obtained in some instances. These data are presented in addition to a discussion of several other factors that are considered to affect the burst strength of pipe supported by cement. Two types of support are treated: Case I for tensile loading of the unconfined cement sheath, and Case for compressive loading of the confined cement sheath. ANALYTICAL TREATMENT AND RESULTS CASE I—TENSILE STRESSES IN AN UNCONFINED CEMENT SHEATH Conditions like this would most likely occur in a greatly enlarged portion of the hole where the cement was not in immediate contact with either the formation or a thin and hard mud cake. The mathematical analysis for this condition, as shown in the Appendix, rests on the following concepts. Pressure inside a unit length of pipe causes: (1) a tensile or tangential stress to be exerted over the longitudinal cross-sectional areas of the pipe and cement; and (2) an equal amount of strain in both the pipe and cement that is uniformly distributed over the wall thickness of each. This analysis was then used to make several calculations for a cement sheath around 51/2-in. OD pipe. The results are illustrated in Fig. 1, which shows that a tensile stress of 500 psi is imposed on a 5-in. thick sheath when the casing contains a pressure of only 1,450 psi. It also shows that a 10-in. thick sheath would be stressed to 500 psi in tension when the pipe contained a pressure of only 2,350 psi. Alternatively, if the stress analysis is made by means of the Lame thick-wall cylinder theory, the inner fibers of the 10-in. thick sheath will be stressed to 500 psi in tension when the pressure in the pipe is only 990 psi. This, of course, reveals that an unconfined sheath is of little support to the pipe in burst; however, an entirely different result is obtained when the cement is confined between the pipe and formation.

As THE years go by, names of distinguished metallurgists will be added to the list of Henry Marion Howe lecturers, and now and then an illustrious one, for to be chosen to deliver the Howe lecture will be, I do not hesitate to predict, a highly coveted honor. I pray, therefore, your indulgence, if I confess to a feeling of gratification in having been appointed the first of these lecturers. It does not follow, however, that I am losing all sense of proportion and that I have an exaggerated idea of the little I have been able to contribute to our knowledge of iron and steel. Indeed, I fully realize how small were my claims to so great a distinction. I realize, also, that those entrusted with the task of selecting a lecturer were actuated, in coming to a decision, by their knowledge of the long and intimate friendship that had existed between the leader we have lost and myself. For their generous impulse, I thank them from the bottom of my heart; and with becoming modesty, I take up my task as the first Henry Marion Howe lecturer. It would be pleasant and indeed most appropriate to devote this entire lecture to a eulogy of Henry Marion Howe and his work, but how short the time for so large an undertaking and how inadequate my qualifications! On Aug. 28, Sept. 4, 11, and 18, 1875, a series of articles appeared in the Engineering & Mining Journal entitled "What is Steel?" With one exception, these constitute the first professional paper of Henry Marion Howe. That was nearly fifty years ago, three years after graduating from Harvard University. He was then but twenty-seven years old and already his keenly inquisitive mind was actively at work. There is a touch of romance in this young metallurgist who, on entering his. scientific career, destined to be so brilliant and so fruitful, on the very threshold of it, seems to have selected as his motto "What is Steel?" Like a knight-errant of science, he started on his quest for an answer to that question, a quest which was to last forty-seven years and which death only brought to an end. And while thus engaged how many wonderful messages we received from him, each one bringing us nearer to the goal! How illuminating, inspiring and encouraging were those messages! How well-equipped he was to wrench from nature some of the secrets she so jealously guards! How broad his learning and how clear his

Evaluation by the Bureau of Mines of published expansion values for magnesium oxide shows significant variation in values, which may be attributed to sample variables, experimental errors, or systematic differences between measuring techniques. To eliminate the sample variable in measuring expansion, thermal expansion characteristics of a high-purity polycrystalline magnesium oxide were determined by 21 cooperating laboratories using one or more of the following techniques; X-ray camera, X-ray diffractometer, dilatometer, interferometer, and telemicroscope. All expansion values were corrected by the author to a single reference temperature of 25° C. Linear expansion was expressed as a power series in the form of the following equation. Expansion (percent) = [[ A + B (?t) + C (?t)2] ?t 104] The constants, A, B, and C, were determined by least square techniques for X-ray camera, X-ray diffractometer, and dilatometer data separately, and for combined data of all five techniques. Expansion values are tabulated from 26° C. to 1,400° C. in 2° C. intervals using constants derived from X-ray camera data. Below approximately 500° C., expansion values obtained by dilatometric and interferometric methods are significantly lower than those by X-ray methods; above 500° C., this bias decreases rapidly. Comparison of results within methods showed the least variance for X-ray camera results; dilatometer and X-ray diffractometer results have about the same variance. The average deviations, in percent, between observed and calculated expansion values among methods were approximately 10 percent from 100°C. to 300°C., 5 percent from 300°C. to 500°C., and 2 percent from 500°C. to 1,400°C. Maximum deviations were approximately twice as large in most instances.

The same volume per cent liquid was observed for the firkt time at three different pressures for isotherms immediately below the critical temperature. The shapes of the isothermal equilibrium constant curves necessary to predict this phenomena are discussed and illustrated. INTRODUCTION The phase behavior of a number of hydrocarbon systems has been reported; however, very little data are available on natural occurring hydrocarbon systems whose critical temperature is near the reservoir temperature. This appeared to be the case for the fluid studied here; therefore the pressure-volume-temperature data for this system were determined for preqentation. METHOD The PVT data were obtained with equipment similar to hat described by Weinaug and Katz,1 consisting principally of a two-section, double-windowed gauge mounted in a conktant temperature air bath. The procedure followed was essentially that used by Katz and Kurata5 except that a cathetom-eter, reading direct to 0.01 cm, was used to determine the height of each extreme phase limit. The system studied was formed by recombining -.vapor and liquid samples from the first stage separator of the well. Portions of these samples were displaced with mercury into the cell which had previously been filled with mercury. A predetermined amount of the liquid sample was introduced, while an excess of vapor was admitted. The resulting mixture was brought to equilibrium at the condition of the separator during sampling. By adding mercury to maintain the pressure, enough vapor was displaced to give a gas/oil ratio within the cell equal to that produced by the separator at the time of sampling. The remaining material was then considered to be equivalent to the reservoir fluid. An analysis of material in the cell, computed from analysis of vapor and liquid samples and the separator gas/oil ratio. is given in Table I. Thank you, Don Gentry, for your generous introduction. It is not adequate simply to say that I appreciate very much the vote of the Award Committee putting forth my name as the winner of the 1992 Daniel C. Jackling Award. To look at the list of previous Jackling Award winners is a humbling experience. The Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration has been blessed with some exceptional members over the years, and I feel privileged indeed to be included among the Jackling Award winners. During the years of my education at Penn State, my field of specialization was mining engineering, with particular emphasis in my master's and Ph.D. work on rock mechanics. But my career has not been quite so tightly focused as that. I have been involved with coal mining in all its variety - its technical aspects, both theory and practice; and its business side, dealing with management and labor, accountants and lawyers, politicians and environmentalists. And I have also been involved with related fields - construction; exploration; barges, railroads, ships and docks; supply houses; the coke business; you name it. Coming from that practical background, I believe it is most appropriate that I talk with you today about some practical matters. But I will not advise you today how to mine coal or protect roof in a hard-rock mine. You fellows know how to do that. The practical matters that I have in mind relate to policy - national policy. I will acknowledge immediately that national policy is often much less than practical, but bear with me as we explore the subject together. I am reminded of a supervisor I had early in my career. He very strongly advised me, back in 1961, to "get involved in the political process," for without objectivity injected into our national policy making, we will become a second-rate economic power. I have selected as the subject of my remarks today, "Coal and the de facto National Energy Policy." There is an energy policy relating to coal, a de facto one, and it's the one we see as a result of regulation, attitudes and culture from our nation's capital. This de facto policy is the one we in the coal business live with every business day. My thesis is very simple - Coal is, in fact, a vital part of our national energy policy and will remain so, as a practical matter, no matter what politicians may do to us, or not do to us. Coal will prevail - that will be the happy ending to my story in which, of course, we are the good guys in the black hard hats. But first, I must flesh out the plot with some other characters and with some threatening activities. There are five main characters in my story: in order of appearance - Perpetual Politics, Rampant Regulation, Selective Science, Electrification and Confident Coal. The time: the present. Perpetual Politics is always a threat to coal. When you cross the Capital Beltway into Washington, D.C., check your wallet and your gold fillings, because you're not likely to run into any friends. "IntroductionLocationTHE PROPERTY of Aunor Gold Mines, Limited is in Deloro township, Ontario, about three miles southeast of the town of Timmins. It consists of a group of eleven claims located between those of Buffalo-Ankerite Gold Mines, Limited, and Delnite Gold Mines, Limited.GeologyThe ore zone at the Aunor mine consists of a narrow band of fine grained pillowed andesite, irregular bands of 'brown to green carbonated andesite, and lenticular bodies of quartz feldspar porphyry. The zone strikes N.80°E., dips 60 North, and has been traced for 5,000 feet across the property. It varies in width from 0 to 250 feet and is bounded on the north and south by masses of dark bluish-grey tale chlorite schist. These schist bands have widths up to 500 feet.The ore occurs in a series of parallel and branching veins confined to the limits of the zone. These veins tend to terminate and die out on the footwall schist contact, striking generally parallel with the ore zone. In wide sections of the zone, 150 to 250 feet, the veins range in width up •to 3.5 feet and may occur in two or three horizons across the width of the zone, each mineable independent of the other. They tend to dip a little flatter than the general dip of the zone. Where the zone is narrow, the veins are so closely spaced and numerous they can be mined together and in some places the complete zone has been mined from schist to schist."

THE great development of the mines and metallurgical works of this country during the last few years, accompanied as it has been by the investment of enormous sums of money in purchasing lands, and in the erection of improvements, requires that advantage should be taken of the accumulated knowledge of engineers, superintendents, and' others, in mastering &he problems which are constantly presenting themselves for our action. Among those may be mentioned the consideration of more economical systems of mining in our coal and metal-liferous mines, improved methods of transportation above and below ground, unwatering and ventilating mines, the mechanical preparation of coal and other minerals, the various metallurgical processes, and, in fact, every question tending to the attainment of two great objects : 1st. The more economical production of the useful minerals and metals. 2d. The greater safety and welfare of those employed in these industries. In European countries, where the arts of mining and metallurgy have long been the subject of the most careful study, no means have been found so effectual in attaining the end above proposed as the free interchange of experience among those actually engaged in these industries, and this object has been accomplished, mainly, through the medium of institutes, associations or societies, composed of those engaged in these occupations, and by the periodical publication of essays or papers, communicated to such societies by their members. I t must be evident to all practical men that the interchange of the varied experience of those engaged in such occupation in this country could not fail to advance very materially the desired objects; it is, therefore, proposed to establish an American Institute of Mining Engineers, which will hold its meetings periodically in the great mining and metallurgical centers, where works of interest, such as mines, machine shops, furnaces, and other metallurgical works, can be inspected, and the members exchange their views, and consult for mutual advantage upon the difficulties encountered by each; these transactions or proceedings, when published, would form a most valuable and greatly-needed addition to our professional literature. I t is proposed that a meeting of those sympathizing with the object above mentioned shall be called for the purpose of organizing such an association, the place and time of meeting being Wilkes-Barre, Pa., and the month of April or May. Communications indicating the opinion and wishes of all, both as to these points, and also as to the organization and objects of the Institute, will be gladly received by any of the undersigned, and a notice of the date of meeting, which will be arranged to suit the greater number, will be duly communicated. Introduction Before examining the current position of the asbestos industry and its market outlook, it is important to describe the product itself. If we are to understand the problems besetting this basic mining and manufacturing industry, and, more importantly, if we are to appreciate solutions to these problems, we had better view asbestos from the proper perspective. Asbestos has a unique combination of properties - properties not found in any other natural substance or man-made material. As a result, asbestos has found its way - in fact, is welcomed - into hundreds of applications. Properties and Products World production capacity of asbestos fiber is about 6.5 Mt (7.2 million st). Major producers and their approximate percentage share of actual production are: USSR, 47%; Canada, 24%; South Africa, 5%; Zimbabwe, 5%; Brazil, 4%; Italy, 3%; and others (including the US, China, and Greece), 12%. J. STEVENS*—The authors state that the contamination in the metal was due mostly to the ladle refractories. Did the contamination vary with different brands of refractories or different qualities in the ladle ? C. B. POST (authors' reply)—That would be expected. In our shop we have used a grade of firebrick which is fairly standard. We do use high refractory nozzles to combat this erosion and high refractory sleeves, but there is such a problem when you get a skull in a ladle you just cannot use these high refractory bricks; you rip out the whole ladle getting the skull cleaned up. The acid bricks form a glass, and you can pull the skull out when you do get them. I believe you might find variations among the different refractories depending on how much silicon is in the brick. This determines how much silica is going into the interface between the steel and the brick. Our brick is about 35 pet alumina and 65 pet silica. With a brick of 35 pet alumina in the slag patches new calculations would have to be made. R. PARDEE*—Where can you draw the line in determining the refractories as being a silica refractory ? C. B. POST—More silica than about 50 pet. I think perhaps that is generally the criterion. The brick we use is a good high grade fire brick. T. S. WASHBURN*--With reference to the higher silicon that is recommended as a result of this investigation, is it contemplated that the specified range would be raised to 0.40-0.60 pet silicon, or possibly 0.50-1.00 pet silicon? These higher silicon ranges would affect the physical properties of the steel and consequently there might be some complications with respect to educating the consumers to 'accept this revision of the conventional analysis. The substance known as carbonite, or natural coke, has been several times the subject of comment before the Institute. The most important contribution hitherto made to the discussion is that of Dr. Henry Wurtz, of Hoboken,* who states, upon the strength of a chemical analysis, that carbonite is not a coke, but contains 14.08 per cent. of volatile combustible matter. In 1882 a mine was opened upon a carbonite seam, near Midlothian, Chesterfield County, Va., by Messrs. Jewett & Brother, of that place. The seam, which dips westerly at an angle of about 30 degrees, was struck at the depth of 137 feet with a vertical shaft, and followed on the dip 325 feet, at which depth gangways were opened north and sooth. For these statements (having made no personal examination of the locality), I am indebted to Mr. Albert Blair, of Richmond, and for the following section, to Mr. John Bladon, engineer at the mine. The section was taken in the face of the gangway, February 17th, 1883. It shows an aggregate thickness of 15 feet of "coke," of which about 5 feet were extracted by the system employed last winter. It is reported that under the "coke" seam there is a thick seam of highly bituminous coal, which has been extensively worked on a neighboring property, a little south of the Jewett colliery, the coal being sold for gas-waking. SINCE the end of World War II interest has been increasing in the use of shaped charges in the mining industry and in other industries using explosives for blasting purposes. Shaped charges employ the principle known as the "Munroe effect," which was discovered by Charles E. Munroe more than 50 years ago (in 1888). Details of their design have been explained e1sewhere.l,2,3 Fig I shows the essential features of design of two types of shaped charges (with conical and hemispherical cavities) and a schematic sketch of their action upon detonation. The following discussion deals with the behavior of the metal in the cavity liners when they are subjected to intense pressures exerted when the explosive charge is detonated. Among the conclusions reached in research on shaped explosive charges, the following have been established concerning cavity liners: 1,2 I. The optimum wall thickness of a conical cavity liner is dependent upon the apex angle of the cone as well as on the base diameter of the charge. Acute apex angles require thinner walls for optimum performance and more obtuse angles require thicker walls for the same base diameter. 2. Cones were more effective in forming a penetrating jet when the walls were tapered; i.e., the thickness of the wall of the cone increased from the apex down. 3. The physical and mechanical proper- ties of metals have a marked effect upon their performance as cavity-liner material. Boiling point, ductility, malleability, tensile strength, and hardness are among the properties that influence the effectiveness of a metal used as a cavity liner. Lead, for example, makes a wide, flat crater in steel plates. Aluminum makes a deeper crater than lead, and an aluminum alloy having a high tensile strength makes a deeper hole, but slightly smaller in diameter. Cast iron makes a deep, narrow hole. These findings, together with the following analysis under Metallographic Survey of Slug, offer solutions to many of the problems involved in solving the mechanism of the formation of Munroe jets. It has been fairly well established that cavity liners collapse in a manner similar to that indicated in Fig 2. Conical liners are known to collapse upon themselves while hemispherical liners are believed to turn inside out in the process of jet formation. The first has been definitely proved by recovery of collapsed portions of cones, while liners from partly detonated charges show that hemispheres may turn inside out. Fig 3 shows a sketch of a recovered slug from a 6-in. shaped charge using a 45° cone made of cast iron. (This size of charge drilled holes up to 3 ft in depth in solid granodiorite.)

The Victorville cement plant of the Southwestern Portland Cement Co. is located about 1 mile from the city of Victorville, Calif. Two transcontinental railway systems, the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe, and the Southern Pacific Railroad, afford shipped facilities. The plant is modern and well kept, as the officials, especially the higher operating officials, take pride in the appearance of the place. Dust has been practically eliminated by the installation of dust collectors and wet grinding. The plant has a rated capacity of 5,000 barrels of cement daily.

Calorimetric data for the dissolution of scandium sesquioxide and scandium trichloride in 4.360 molal hydrochloric acid were used to evaluate the standard heat of formation of ScCl3(c). The heat of reaction for Sc(c) + 1.5Cl2(g) = ScCl3(c) at 298.15° K was computed as -225,440 ±340 cal/mole.
