I would feel more equal to the task if I could have the opportunity to talk to them singly, in doing which I know I may count upon their good sportsmanship not to compare notes. There has been some discussion between Mr. Kelly and myself as to our respective duties on this occasion: The precedents are not clear as to whether the retiring or the incoming president is expected to speak at length. Mr. Kelly's argument was that as the incoming president confines himself to promises for the future his field is a broad one and his opportunities for extending his remarks correspondingly unlimited.

Flotation of chalcopyrite and unactivated malachite with xanthates (ethylxanthate, butylxanthate, octylxanthate and dodecylxanthate) is studied in this paper. Minerals interacted with xanthates are detected by FTIR, and simulated by molecular mechanics. It shows that chalcopyrite can be floated with 4 kinds of xanthates, and unactivated malachite can?t be floated with ethylxanthate but can be floated directly with later 3 kinds of xanthates while characteristic absorption peaks of those four kinds of xanthates are all detected by FTIR on chalcopyrite and malachite surface. After simulating the interaction between xanthate and mineral, it shows that H2O and OH-can interact with chalcopyrite and malachite, and their interaction energy may be so called energy bulwark which must be overcome by collector when collector interacts on minerals; the two sulfur atoms in xanthate group interact with copper and neighbor iron atoms on chalcopyrite. It also shows that molecular mechanics results with logP of collectors can interpret the mechanism of xanthate-mineral on atom scale.

Com isso, a necessidade de ferramentas tecnológicas se faz presente para obter controles ágeis e recursos otimizados. A informatização é uma destas ferramentas que podem ser usadas na gestão da produção no setor automotivo. Esta permite que os gestores consigam monitorar em tempo real a produção e caso necessário intervir no processo de forma ágil para eliminar ou diminuir as não conformidades durante a produção. Este trabalho discute a informatização da gestão da produção em uma forjaria no setor automotivo e a importância das ferramentas tecnológicas aplicadas como suporte a gestão. Apresenta-se um caso real aplicado no setor, onde a informatização apresentou ganhos de acesso à informação e agilidade na tomada de decisão. Neste, realiza-se uma comparação do processo de gestão manual com a proposta de informatização. Como resultado, verificou que as ferramentas tecnológicas aplicadas possibilitaram melhorar fortemente a gestão durante o processo produtivo e mostrou-se superior nos quesitos de qualidade e tempo para difundir a informação, bem como reduzir custos operacionais.

FiRst I must express my deep appreciation for the honor of being privileged to give the Howe Memorial Lecture this year and at the same time my feeling of inadequacy to do justice to the subject. The first Howe lecturer was most fittingly, Professor Sauveur, his contemporary and friend, and the subject was beta iron. Last year the second Howe lecture was delivered by Dr. Mathews, one of his most distinguished pupils, who spoke on austenite. This year, the Howe Professor of Metallurgy was chosen to deliver the third annual lecture, and the subject ought to be martensite. No one but Professor Sauveur could have brought to life what was considered by many to have been dead and buried, and he so persuasively and convincingly proved to us by his experiments the existence of something that the followers of that new cult "X-Ray and Crystal Structure " would have us believe is simply alpha iron. And Dr. Mathews from his wide practical experience was so easily able to convince us that austenite was not only the most wonderful of the iron-carbon series, but that it was the wonder alloy of the future. If I were to follow in the footsteps of my distinguished predecessors, I would talk to you about martensite. But when I had planned this lecture, I found that I was writing about Professor Howe and his work and his influence on the science of metals of today, and that martensite had become the secondary theme. And when finally I was obliged to choose a title, I remembered that it was in 1901 I came from Roberts-Austen with a letter of introduction to his very dear friend, Henry Marion Howe, at the Columbia School of Mines, to continue my work at the next bench to Dr. Mathews. Since then a quarter of a century has gone by, and during that time all branches of science seem to have been remade, so great has been our advancement in knowledge and discovery. And now that Metallography has finally established its place as an important branch of science, with its own textbooks and literature, I would like to review what seem to me to be the most important advances we have made in the last 25 years. To do this, I would start with Howe's "Iron, Steel and Other Alloys," and end with Jeffries and Archer's " Science of Metals." In the preface of the former, Professor Howe wrote: My warmest thanks are due to the friends who have aided me with their counsel and knowledge. While assaying some copper carbonate ore from the Frazer claims, Similakameen, B. C., I noticed that on parting the gold button a deep orange solution was formed. The button gave off pink bands in the nitric acid, which became deep orange at a short distance from it; and as it traveled over the surface of the porcelain dish, it left a deep orange track behind. As the button brightened in the cupel, it appeared to have a bronze color; but I have since found that when amarillium is in large excess of the gold, the button is a very dark gray. Gold-bearing quartz veins with auriferou pyritic wall rock alteration haloes at the Komis deposit near Waddy Lake in northern Saskatchewan occur in fractured Archean intermediate volcanic rock flanking a plutonic felsic intrusion. Three ore zones totalling 1.5 million tonnes grading five g/t gold have resulted from a combination of patterns of high density of fracture-filling quartz veins created by contrasting competencies of four predominant rock types and preferential gold deposition in magnetitebearing andesite host rock. Pre-glacial surface weathering remobilized gold from a nearby pyritized intermediateto- felsic dyke to form the EP Zone with a wide variety of supergene accessory minerals. Much of the EP Zone wa eroded by glacial action to forn1 a highly anomalous gold-bearing till dispersion train which facilitated its di covery.

Infrared spectra disclose that oleic acid will not adsorb on the surface of pure beryl unless the mineral is first activated with HF. The adsorption of oleic acid on HF activated beryl is attributed to the hydrogen bonding of oleic acid monomers to F-surface bridging sites. These sites are formed as a result of the reaction of HF with chemisorbed water or surface hydroxyl. Characteristic infrared spectra of physically adsorbed oleic acid are correlated with flotation at different pH at temperatures of 25°C and 75°C for colloidal and -60-mesh particles. The usual mode of occurrence of the beryllium mineral beryl, Be3A12Si6O18, is in granite pegmatites as pale green, white, or yellow crystals. A dark green gem variety, emerald, may be found in the wall rock of pegmatite veins or in mica schist. The most important beryl deposits in the United States are in the Black Hills District of South Dakota, and several mountain ranges of central and west-central Utah contain potential commercial sources of this mineral. Several papers have been published concerning the flotation of beryl with different conditioning reagents. Kennedy and O'Meara1 reported on the essential use of HF in the flotation of beryl from different ores. The use of calcium hypochlorite to separate HF activated beryl from feldspar after flotation with an amine collector was made by Runke.2 A report on the activation of beryl with different cations using sodium oleate collector was presented by Viswa-nathan and co-workers.3 Flotation of beryl with sulfonate collector and different activating salts was employed by Fuerstenau and Bhappu.4 The role of the surface charge or zeta potential in the flotation of beryl with different collectors and salts was also extensively investigated.5"7 Previous infrared investigations by the authors8 disclosed that the orthosilicate beryllium mineral, phenacite, reacts with oleic acid to form a chemisorbed oleate monolayer on the mineral surface. Thus, chemisorption is the effective mode of adsorption in the phenacite-oleate acid flotation system. In contrast, neither chemisorption or physical adsorption of oleic acid occur on the surface of pure beryl as evidenced in this study. Efforts were subsequently made to determine the mechanism of activation and collector adsorption for HF pretreated beryl. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Large, white, terminated crystals of beryl were obtained from Madagascar through Ward's Co., Monterey, Calif. The crystals were broken into -60-mesh fragments in a porcelain mortar. Part of this prepared material was ground to a powder with a Fisher Grinder using an agate mortar and pestle. The powder was transferred to a graduated cylinder and mixed with 500 ml of distilled water. After 5 min, the colloidal suspension was separated from the settled particles by decantation and used as a stock for infrared test determinations. Adsorption tests were performed by first transferring 20 ml of colloidal suspension to 50 ml glass centrifuge tubes. The solids were then centrifuged out and the liquid was discarded. Then, the solids were pretreated with one molar HC1 or one molar HF. After 15 min, the solids were again centrifuged out. The mineral solids were washed free of residual acid by repeated centrifuging and water washing operations. Then, 20 ml of distilled water was added to the solids, and the resultant suspension was used for test purposes. In the preparation of mineral for flotation tests, 1.5 g of -60-mesh beryl was deslimed by removing the colloidal fraction by three successive water washes and decantations. Then, the coarse particles were pretreated with either one molar HCl or one molar HF for 15 min. The mineral was next washed free of acid with distilled water, and 20 ml of distilled water was added to the beryl prior to collector conditioning. The conditioning of mineral with collector was performed in 50 ml centrifuge tubes to which either NaOH or HC1 was added for pH modification. "Mechanical properties of copper wires were examined. The copper wires containing 5-10 mass % chromium and 1-3 mass % silver were produced through heavily cold deformation. It was expected that the copper wire was easily fractured during cold deformation because of the existence of brittle chromium phase in the alloy. In fact, the copper wire was fractured due to large work hardening, when the true strain [n] exceeded 5. However, the copper wire annealed at 1273K for 6 ks ·in the middle of deformation process could be smoothly drawn to 11=8. After precipitation treatment for silver phase at 473k for 1.8 ks, the wire was able to further drawn to n=8.4. The final deformed wire showed tensile strength higher than 1200MPa.IntroductionDownsizing of electronic devices has led to the demand of finer and higher strength materials for cables. Conventional copper alloys have about 800MPa in ultimate tensile strength. These strength are mainly obtained by precipitation hardening. Nowadays, a process for higher strength wire has been developed, where dual phase copper alloy is used. When it is drawn heavily, the' second phase is elongated along drawing direction and the wire gets high strength due to fiber reinforcement (1). That alloy is so called in-situ formed fiber reinforced ·alloy. Cu-Ag(2), Cu-Nb(3) and Cu-Cr(4) systems are well known as such alloys. It is also well known that chromium is brittle material except single crystal and high purity of chromium. However, Mihara et al. C5l have achieved 1 GPa in ultimate tensile strength in the Cu-Cr-Zr and Cu-Cr-Ti alloys by appropriate thermo-mechanical processing.In this study, the Cu-Cr-Ag systems were investigated: The alloys contained 10 or 5% chromium and 3 or 1 % silver. It was demonstrated that silver precipitated in copper matrix contributed on further hardening."

"INTRODUCTION The first important discovery of petroleum in New Mexico was near Dayton, Eddy County, where the Brown well was drilled in 1909, and small quantities of oil were produced. In 1911 and 1912 wells were drilled in McKinley County, but commercial production did not begin until the discovery of the Hogback field, San Juan County, in 1922. The discovery well in the Artesia field, Eddy County, drilled in 1923, gave impetus to active drilling in many areas. Since 1924 New Mexico has produced petroleum in commercial quantities and since 1930 the State has joined the ranks of the big produc¬ing States, being sixth or seventh in total production in recent years.Production by years. 1924 to 1940, inclusive, taken from annual figures in Bureau of Mines Minerals Yearbook, are given in table 1. The total production shown is 274,331,000 barrels. Andreas 3/ has published production figures for the year 1940 and a resume of all production to the end of 1940. Data from his report are presented in table 2 for each field sampled. The cumulative production, as given by Andreas, is 270,618,575 barrels."

"Coal mining in India has a strategic importance for the energy security of the country. Presently, the majority of coal production is coming from open-cast mining. Due to the fast depletion of reserves amenable to open-cast mining, future coal production will depend primarily on underground production. In conventional bard-and-pillar/room and pillar mining as it is practiced in India, the percentage of extraction is very low. In fact, within most Indian coalfields, a large number of coal seams extract only 15- 20% of coal, but no pillar extraction is done due to the presence of surface or sub-surface structures leading to huge amount of coal being locked-up in underground. Spontaneous heating and fire, the accumulation of poisonous gases, severe stability issues, unsafe workings and environmental hazards are all major problems associated with these developed coal pillars, so there is a pressing need for technology in the mining industry to extract this huge amount of coal locked up under different constraints. In this study, we propose that the locked-up coal be extracted by replacing the developed coal pillars with artificial pillars. The paper briefly discusses the extraction methodology designed for this and its evaluation through numerical modeling for applied suitability underground.INTRODUCTIONDriven by rising populations and urbanization, an expanding economy and also a quest for improved quality of life, energy usage in India is expected to increase manifold in the coming years. As for India's energy scenario and its projected future plans, there is no doubt that coal will remain a prime source of energy, even over the next few decades.The majority of coal production in India comes from open-cast mining because of large-scale mechanization, but the coal reserves amenable to open-cast mining are gradually depleting - which may impose adverse impacts on the energy sector if underground production does not increase. Underground coal extraction, meanwhile, is going to become more complicated in near future due to the fast exhaustion of easily mineable coal reserves."

"INTRODUCTION For the last several years the oil industry has been turning more and more toward conservation arid the study of related production problems. It is generally conceded that ultimate recovery is increased by holding the natural gas in thy sand which is net needed in lifting the oil. The retained gas lowers the viscosity and surface tension of the oil and helps flow the oil from the sand. Lewis states that ""while the operator can not control the original conditions of energy and resistance in the sand, he can partly control the efficiency of expulsion. As it is the energy contained in the compressed and absorbed gas rather than the oil that is exhausted, it is but logical to judge the efficiency of a producing method largely by the relative quantities of gas produced with each barrel of oil. If by a change in method the producer lessons the proportion of gas with each barrel of oil, he should increase the total recovery- of oil correspondingly, even if the rate of production is temporarily reduced somewhat.""The effect of ""pinching in"" or controlling the flow of oil wells in an effort to lessen the proportion of has never been definitely known. The general belief has been that ""pinching"" a flowing well causes the oil and gas volumes to be reduced proportionately, maintaining the same gas-oil ratio as before the reduction in flow was made. Studies of gas-oil ratios in many fields have shown that much gas has been wasted, insofar as its effectiveness in oil production is concerned. Swigart and Bopp carried."

H ELIUM (chemical symbol: He) is a member of a family of normally gaseous elements, which, because of their zero valence and corresponding lack of chemical activity, are called the "noble" or "inert" gases. It is a monatomic element with an atomic number of 2, and it exists naturally in two stable isotopic forms-He3, with an atomic mass of 3.0170, and He4, with an atomic mass of 4.0039. With the exception of a trace (10-6 percent) of He3, all of the naturally occurring helium is He4. Two unstable isotopes-He5, with atomic mass 5.0137, and He6, with atomic mass 6.0208-are listed by various scientists, but the existence of He5 is questioned by some of them. He6 is radioactive, with a half-life of 0.8 second. Helium was discovered in 1868 in the gaseous atmosphere surrounding the sun. Although several scientists studied the solar chromosphere that year, it is generally agreed that J. Norman Lockyer of England should be credited with the discovery of helium, which he named, deriving the word from "helios," the Greek name for the sun. It was not found on earth until March 1895, when William Ramsay of London produced a small amount from a sample of cleveite, a uranium-bearing mineral. In 1905, H. P. Cady and D. F. McFarland of Kansas found helium in natural gas produced from a well near Dexter, Kans., and for the first time a large source of helium became available.

In the year 1881 I presented to the Institute two papers containing the resnlts of researches on gold, in which I endeavored to make plain some of the causes of the losses in the working of gold-ores. Since that time I have continued this investigation at intervals with the following results. In the papers previously presented to the Institute I made no attempt to make compounds containing more than two substances. Since then I have endeavored to make more complex compounds. The experiments consist in fusing mispickel free from gold with a certain amount of metallic gold, and experimenting with that; also fusing the same mineral with sulphide of antimony, and fusing iron pyrites with gold and compounds of antimony. This paper describes and evaluates a method that the Federal Bureau of Mines used to determine the ultimate composition of the organic material in 10 samples of oil shale from the Mahogany zone of the Green River formation in Colorado and Utah. Since interest has centered on the Mahogany zone, the richest section of the deposit, these 10 samples were chosen to provide a broad representation of this zone with the objective of obtaining generally valid ultimate composition values. The most probable organic composition for the Mahogany zone and the 95-percent confidence limits for each component average (in weight-percent of organic material) are: Carbon 80.5 ± .4 Hydrogen 10.3 ± .1 Nitrogen 2.4 ± .1 Sulfur 1.0 ± .1 Oxygen 5.8 ± .5 As only minor variations in composition were observed, the organic material of this particular bed is quite similar over a wide geographic area.

"Metal aluminum produced by non-electrolysis process received much attention due to its lower energy consumption. In this paper, carbothermic reduction and carbothermic-chlorination of alumina in normal pressure and vacuum were studied. The products were examined by means of XRD, EDS and SEM. During the carbothermic reduction process using carbon reductant in normal pressure, no metal aluminum was found. However, when coal was used as reductant, a mixture containing metallic aluminum, A14C3, and silicon was obtained, but metallic aluminum couldn't be separated from the mixture. During the carbothermic-chlorination process in vacuum, Al404C and Al4C3 were produced by the reaction between alumina and carbon, and Al Ch gas reacted with Al404C and Al4C3 to produce Al Cl gas. Metallic aluminum was produced due to the disproportionation of A!Cl gas and condensed on the collecting plate. Meanwhile, the initial temperature of carbothermic reduction of alumina reduced in vacuum compared with that in normal pressure.IntroductionIndustrial production of primary aluminum is carried out in alumina cell by the so-called Hall- Heroult process, necessitating the use of very high currents of low voltage. The alumina from which metallic aluminum is gained must be chemically pure, otherwise impure metal results. The main drawbacks of the electrolytic production are its very high energy consumption, the release ofperfluorocarbons, and the high specific C02 emissions [1]. During the past years, there were a lot of attempts to produce metallic aluminum by carbothermic reduction of A1203 [2, 3]. Cox [4] determined the vapor pressure over the A1203-C system and performed X-ray diffraction analysis of condensed products. It was demonstrated that an increase in the carbon content in the system leaded to the sequence of transitions: A1203~Al404C~A1zoc~A14C3 ~AI [5]. In any carbothermic reduction process for aluminum, extremely high temperatures (2000 °C ) were required [6]. In spite of considerable effort, the carbothermic reduction of alumina to aluminum remains a formidable technical challenge, due to the high temperatures required, and to the formation of aluminum carbide and oxycarbide byproducts [7]."

Many oxide silver and molybdenum deposits remain undeveloped because chemical extraction yields poor recoveries or is environ-mentally unacceptable. Bio-reductive leaching of such ore samples at MBX resulted in high recoveries of silver and molybdenum. When baseline 3-day cyanide bottle roll tests were conducted on manganiferous oxide silver ore, 13.7% of the silver was extracted. In contrast, 86% of the silver was microbially solubilized into the organic growth medium by bio-reduction with 99.8% dissolution of manganese. A follow-up cyanide bottle roll test yielded an additional 8.5% silver recovery for a total recovery of 94.5%. Baseline 3-day acid bottle roll tests of the iron oxide molybdenum ore yielded 1.8% moly. However, bio-reduction solubilized 93.3% of the moly into the growth medium. An additional 0.3% moly was recovered during the follow-up acid bottle roll test. Microbial treatment of refractory oxide ores with bio-reductive bacteria resulted in higher recoveries of silver and molybdenum than conventional chemical leaching. The bioleaching process occurred at a near-neutral pH at ambient temperatures. The bacterial solubilization of silver and moly was achieved without the use of cyanide or sulfuric acid.

THE paper consists of four sections: (1) a discussion of early work; (2) presentation of the results of a chemical investigation of Falcon-bridge nickel-copper blast-furnace matte; (3) application of the results of this investigation to mattes in general; and ( 4) a summary of conclusions. All general discussion will be confined to the fundamental system of ferrous-cuprous sulphides (FeS-Cu2S). Nickel-, lead-, and zinc-bearing mattes will be treated as minor varieties of the parent system. DISCUSSION OF EARLY INVESTIGATIONS Matte investigations may be divided into three classes: first, those treating the sulphides as alloys-theoretical studies of the system FeS-Cu2S, such as those of Hofman (ll)t or Carpenter and Hayward (2); second, chemical research on mattes made under smelter conditions, such as that carried out by Hawley (3) or Avetision ( 4); third, combinations of the . above, such as the investigations of Gibb and Philp (5) or Fulton and Goodner (6). Much research in the first of these classes, including determinations of . freezing points and of data for structure-composition diagrams of the system FeS-Cu2S, was carried out in the period 1890-1910. LeChatelier and Ziegler (1, 13) proved that FeS, when heated alone above its melting point, dissociated in part, and Friedrich ( quoted by Fulton, 6) showed the same for Cu2S. The reactions may be expressed by the following equations: [xFeS yFe + yS (volatilized)+ (x -y)FeS xCu2S )'Cu+ yS ( vohtilized) + (x -)')Cu,S ] Sulphur is lost by volatilization, leaving a melt of metallic iron plus ferrous sulphide in the one case, and of metallic copper plus cuprous sulphide in the other. If the mixed sulphides are heated far above their melting points, there results either an iron-rich matte containing Fe-FeS-Cu2S or a copper-rich matte containing FeS-Cu2S3-Cu, depending on the relative amounts of each sulphide in the mixture.
